The following story was received on our paranormal story submission page.
Steven Wong submitted 2 fascinating but unusual stories which he experienced directly.
I like his submission very much as it shows that spirits and unseen beings are not actually restricted to specific areas like cemeteries or abandoned houses. Instead, they are everywhere. They are, in fact, like a whole community of living beings, exactly how we humans live around the world, except that the spirit community can see us, and their population would be twice or thrice of the population of mankind.
Different people feel spirits differently. Sometimes we can sense presences around us, sometimes we can see them. But in Steven’s case, he literally felt them tugging at him. Can you imagine that? How would you feel if you were in his shoes?
I will publish one of his stories first.. Read on, let me know what you think.
By the way… you can never guess what he experienced in his next story. Stay tuned for that!!

Dear Rinpoche,
Please allow me to contribute my experience to your new paranormal section. There are 2 stories.
Story No.1 – Shadowy Figures
About 15 years ago, I was in Kota Bahru in Kelantan to attend my cousin’s wedding. We were put up in a small but comfortable motel just outside the main town.
We arrived on the eve of the wedding, and that night a couple of us went out to have dinner. We decided to retire early in anticipation of the wedding the next day.
When I reached the motel, I went straight to my room to sleep. The room was quite ordinary, and had a window facing the main road. There was a street light just outside the window. With the room light switched off, the street lights lit up the room with a soft amber hue. I did not draw the curtains to allow the street light to enter the room so that the room is not in complete darkness.
I fell asleep quite quickly due to fatigue after traveling from KL earlier in the day. I remember looking at my watch before I fell asleep, and the time was approximately 12.30am.
During the night, I was awoken after I felt my left toes being pulled. It must have happened for quite some time to have woken me up from the deep sleep I was in. Although I was awake, for the first few seconds my eyes were still shut, but I was conscious of my toes being pulled. When I opened my eyes, I saw two dark shadowy figures standing at the end of my bed looking straight at me.
I could see them very clearly as the room was adequately lit by the brightness from the street lamp just outside. After a short while, the two dark shadowy figures walked away, with one proceeding to the main door and then simply walked right through the door, while the other walked to the side of my bed and straight into the wall.
I wasn’t scared at all, but my mind was trying to decipher the whole experience. I knew I had just encountered some strange, paranormal stuff. After gathering my thoughts, I looked at my watch, and it was about 3.30am or so. I fell straight back to sleep shortly after.
The next morning, I told my cousin what happened and he mentioned it to his father-in-law. His father-in-law was the one that booked the rooms for the wedding guests. He said the motel did have a reputation for being spooky, but he had no choice as it was the only place with rooms available during the school holiday season.
That night after the wedding dinner, I retired back to my room. I slept through the night peacefully without any untoward incidents, and left the next day.
Steven

Spirits and unseen beings are everywhere not only actually restricted to specific areas. Places such as cemeteries, abandoned houses or places where death occurred. There are many different types of spirits around us, unseen to the naked eye, but for some they could see it or sense their presence. Many people of different faith reported having experienced sense the presence of spirits. Interesting rather scary reading Steven Wong ghostly experienced in the motel . I have encounter such before staying in hotel . More scary I can say. That’s past history, since coming to Buddhism I am not scare at all , I will recite DS Mantra . Later do prayers and dedicate to them .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
Oh Wow! My hats off to Steven. I wouldn’t dare to sleep there for another night if it was me. But funny why would they just pull his toes to wake him up and then walked away. Were the ghosts seeking attention and having fun for the night? It is kind of sad that they have to hang around due to their attachments to the place. I am glad that I had met with my Guru to understand and I do hope that when my time comes, I will not have any attachments to people, places, things or even emotions but to move on to a rebirth that I can find the Dharma from young. No more wasted time or overcoming karmic obstacles. Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this story with us.
Dear Rinpoche, Steven is really lucky that the spirits he saw is not the angry spirits type, the spirits are maybe just touching Steven for fun and walked away after pulling Steven’s toe. The thing that I always find it weird is why spirits can touch us physically but we can’t us touch them? And why most of the paranormal activities appear in the time between 2am to 7am?
i believe that spirits exist and it is true. there is occurrences, sightings and maybe hauntings. but the punch line is “spirits are spirits and we must respect them” . please respect spirits and always believe.
Damn straight I would have jumped out of my bed of those spirits pulled me by the toes. Apparently spirits are all around us all the time, we are surrounded by them just that we cant see them right now.
Steven’s experience is mostly been heard from a lot of hotels . Especially all profession that need to travel a lot. It doesn’t only happened in beat off motels but you be surprise that actually they love five stars hotel suites much better then the abandon buildings ..will share some stories later with paranoma zone .
Wow…..do not have any of such direct experience but Steven’s case was quite scary. Don’t know how to react if really happen to me. What we can’t see doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
Quite sad to see those spirit which still wandering around.
I would not know how I would react if I had a similar experience. For someone like me who had not had such an experience it may be scary, (I am not wishing for it though 🙂 I guess if these are beings lingering around, waiting for their karma to exhaust to take another rebirth then they would probably not harm. But there are those beings who had passed on from their previous lives in bad circumstances like suicide, being murdered, etc. These beings may be out for revenge because their minds may not have accepted and let go at the time of death. I think it is no difference between the spirit and human realm. Many people cannot let go of their hurt, anger, greed, jealousy, etc when alive.
As I was reading it, my hair stood up. It was really spooky, if it was me, I wouldn’t be a able to sleep at all and would have requested to change a room the next day.
interesting encounter by Steven, as if the spirits wanting their presence known by tugging his toe. But Steven is very calm and that incident didn’t even scared him abit, or maybe he is too tired.
I myself do belief that there is spirit around, but like my mother always told me, if you do not mess with them, they would not mess with you, and they are even scared of us.
Reading Steven hotel room experience make me remember my own experience many years back. Will share the story to paranormal blog.
