The following story was received on our paranormal story submission page.
When we toy with the supernatural, we can expect the resultant effect coming back to us. Whether it is a good or bad effect depends on our motivation, and our intention to ‘connect’ with the supernatural in the first place.
If an object is used as a tool to connect with the formless beings, be it spirits, deities, land gods, or even enlightened beings, the object acts as a portal for us to feel the presence of the beings through our sensory perceptions. The tool that we use can vary, from a coin to an oracle or medium, a tarot card or a dice, and the beings will attach themselves to these tools. Other people who use or are in possession of these tools can sometimes be affected as well.
Hecelus submitted his story about a statue that he was given. Already feeling something amiss when he received it, true enough that very same night, Hecelus experienced something he had never before..
Read on more and let me know what you feel.. Was Hecelus brave for telling his parents?? Would you tell your parents because if you do, you fear that they might harm you even more….???

This story is about an antique Buddha statue from Cambodia. This story happened when I was twelve years old. One day, I followed my dad to visit his relative during a public holiday. After we arrived at his home, he brought us to a room that contained many antiques and a big shrine upstairs. I felt uncomfortable when I entered the room but I didn’t tell my dad.
Before we left, uncle gave my dad an antique Buddha statue made from marble. This statue was very special because it didn’t have features and under the statue contained a lot of sand and stones. After we went back home, Dad washed the statue and placed it in my bedroom. I told my dad to remove it but he didn’t want to remove it.
Something horrible happened that night. My room temperature was unusually cold that night, my heart felt very uneasy. After I switched off the light, I saw one white shadow sitting on my writing desk. I’m very sure that it came from that horrible statue because I saw many white shadows around that statue. “They” will disturb me when I was sleeping. “They” came into my dreams and gave me warning to not let my family know.
One week later, I told my parents what was happening in my room. After that, my mun called her friend to help me solve the problem. Her friend is a Tibetan Buddhist. When my mom’s friend arrived in my home, she saw many supernatural beings run away quickly.
After that, she used paper to cover the face of that statue. She advised us to bring this statue to an antique shop. The next day, the head of that statue coincidentally broke when my parents were bringing this statue to the antique shop.
This is my first paranormal experience that I would like to share.

Interesting reading this blog. Yes…its always a case old antique at times comes with something else. Even when given or buying antique statues one got to be very careful. To buy one from genuine buyer on the safe side . An antique Buddha statue from Cambodia given by a relative . Hecelus Tan first sight was uncomfortable with it as later came with nightmare . That’s bad paranormal experience for him. The head of that statue coincidentally broke when Hecelus’s parents decided to bring it back to the antique shop.

What an interesting story. Antiques had always been known to be the sojourn for the unseen, it is not advisable to simply invite antiques home without knowing the history and background. We see a lot of horror movies adopt the plot of creepy demon / spirit that was unwittedly brough home along with the antique they bought. Whether the item is a statue, Buddha statue or just a chest, it is best to obtain it from reliable source. Especially Buddha statues; the iconongraphy has to be accurate so that when we put it on the altar and venerate the statue, we make connection with the specific Buddha accordingly.

Thank you for sharing this story. From this story I had learnt:
1. Antique statues are dangerous if the source is not known
Antique statues usually had many past owners. If any of the owners that passed away are attached to it, they might attached themselves to the antiques after they passed away.
2. Buddha statues are best being blessed and consecrated.
Buddha statues are best to have mantras and holy items inserted into it and consecrated. This can prevent any beings entering and remain in the statue.
3. Karma.
If we are able to feel and see a spirit, it is due to our karma connection with that being.

It is really freaking how beings could just attach their bodies to items and images. In this case, the image of a Buddha.
Personally I would say that Hecelus is a very brave boy to let his parents know what is happening despite the warnings that he has received. If I was in his shoes, I would definitely not voice out and just do what I am being told to as I do not want my family to be harmed in anyway that we may not be able to control.
Dear Rinpoche, This story is another kind of very terrifying story to me. I know that the statues in my house are already blessed but I’m still scared when I read about this story the first time. Because statues are made for praying, bringing luck, for protection and etc. But in this story the statue is actually being possessed with something in it.
We should be very careful when we collect antique as we do not know what might reside in it. Unless you could get it from creditable sources then do avoid collecting old relics.Better to be safe then sorry.
Thanks Hecelus Tan for the sharing. As we heard many time from elders that Buddha statue might not be empty and it will cause others sentient being stay inside. After i join Kechara and know Kechara Paradise the statue should insert mantra that may let the holy Buddha energy stay inside the statue to bless us continuously. And the statue will become become a real Buddha after insert the mantras.
Hecelus was a very wise and brave boy yo have told his parants. Most people would not and would have gotten more and more affected and soon that is when the negative spirits take over them. Many people are not aware that if anything is hollow or has space and it is not filled up, an entity could very well make it his/her home. Even water offering bowls are said to not be left empty in front of the Buddhas or old or half filled with water, as it will attract a certain type of spirit plus it is in auspicious to have an empty offering in front the Buddhas. This I learnt from Rinpoche. Hence always make sure you purify your offerings with incense chanting “OM AH HUM” 3 times and with an incense to purify.
I think Hecelus is a very brave girl. She bear with the ghosts inside her rooms for the 1 whole week which i think not a normal person can do. Poor girl finally had the gut to tell the parents what happened. On the other hands, by having the chance to connect with these ghosts, we ourselves must have the karma connection with them in many past lives before.
I do not like to bring back any antique pieces to my house. Who knows what’s inside there? Those pieces had been owned by many people and who knows what had they been done to it?? Scary..
we trust people bucause we trust our self.
When a person passes, their sprit or energies can be transfered to something they treasure most, a house/room, clothing, furniture, statues/dolls, if that person was lost, confused or just not ready to leave they imprint on to these objects. Also there is another way of thinking…. The person who made a statue, makes it out of hate or anger some of those energies could be passed to the statue… If it is made with love and care, those could also be passed to the statue…. So what I’m saying is…… If you make something for someone or even making something to help raise funds make it with love and care as we want our friends family and strangers to feel love and care …

I heard many stories of spirits attached to antiques, precious metals, vase etc. Older people used to say wash those item with salt and rinse them under hot sun to purify.
I loves to browse antique shops, admiring the art work and creativity. However i never thought of taking them home for that very simple reason.
I went to Bali several times, and i just fell in love with the local arts, however I always have goose bumps walking alone in the dark at night, i just felt those old stone carved statues are somehow possessed with spirits, and these include the frangipani trees (which attracts pontianak) planted all around the island.
The Balinese has been making offerings to the land and nature spirits since ancient times. I think this is one of the main reason the island is very ‘spirit-ual’!
Next time when anyone who encounter spirit disturbances, you can recite the holy word dispelling them “Om Maha Yak TsaCha Soha” !
This is so spooky. As Buddhist we are taught to regard any image of a Buddha as an actual Buddha and show our respect towards it. Anyone know what we should do if we decide to invite a Buddha statue to our home?
Hercelus is very, very brave!! What my thought of the brave side of Hercelus is, he can stand the disturbing from “them” for a week, every single night! Even in his dream! OMB! Too me, this is really brave! If is me, I will tell my parent’s immediate! I’m not trying to say I am brave, vice versa I am timid! I am too afraid. Because, regardless how “they” warn me, “they” will still disturb me every night anyway. So, I will voice out and seek for help and not wait till things getting worse.
I love to have window shopping at antiques shop. And I have notice that, every time when i walk in to any of the antiques shop (where ever is it), I felt uneasy. I understand there’s lots of dirt’s and unclean second hand stuff in the shop might cause the uneasy feel. But is not because of the cleaners, the feeling is weird, cold + scary+ very uneasy + can feel “some one” is nearby you (I might have wrong feeling’s, but I just felt this). And some antique shop can even feel stronger….. Wondering you guys have any same feelings as mine when you went to an antique shop?

I’m curious too. Buddha with no features? What does that mean? Besides, as an ordinary person, we wouldn’t have thought that even a Buddha statue have unseen beings residing in it!
I wouldn’t bring any statue home without knowing the source, let alone put it on my altar. Scary to think what I might be making offerings to! All my lovely Buddha statues come from Kechara Paradise, filled with holy items at Kechara Saraswati Arts, and concecrated/blessed during one of the many pujas at Kechara House. That way I’m more than 100% sure there is only the Buddha’s energy in them. There is no fear and I feel so safe having them around my house. So energised and protected. I also know what prayers to recite to invoke the blessings of each, how to arrange them on my altar, what suitable offerings to give. How would I even begin to know any of these? There are no instruction manuals that come with statues you buy from anywhere. Thanks to H. E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, I’ve learnt how to start a practice and I am sure if it’s benefits.
Why her father’s friend give they the statue ?
Hercules was very brave to have lasted so many days. …They might not harm us but they sure scare the hell out of us.I will surely run out of the room and tell my parents straightaway. If my parents not at home, i will cover up with a blanket and chant mantras the whole night…………..and seek help the next day.

I remember that when the 1st day im work in Kechara Discovery. I ask Bernice a question.
I ask why ? Why all the cup , bowl and ……? Why put a few piece pearl in it ? Is ti because FENG SHUI ? heheheheh
Then Bernice give me a good explain to wake my mind up!
We can put it empty coz
1. We offer empty bowl or cup to Buddha, because not respect !!
2. If we keep the thing empty in there with long time , some of the spirit will stay in there !!
Perhaps other beings wants to be worship as well. Hence, they might enter statues which are hollow and not filled with mantras, holy items which are then sealed and consecrated so that when someone invites these statues back, they can be worshipped as well.
I heard about this story from Hecelus when he do his retreat in Kechara. He told He feel scary when he entered a room full of statues. I asked him why then he shared with me the whole story.
At that time, I not think that so serious, after reading this article that is very dangerous if we are misused holy object. I learned from this story is we really need to show respect to all holy items and cannot simply used by ourselves selfishness.

Wow, he told his mum after 1 week, that is kinda brave, for me, I would have told everyone immediately to ask for help already, especially when we were a kid, this is so scary to have some unknown in the room together. hehe…
Hecelus did the right thing in telling his parents about his horrible experience with the beings who had made their abode in the antique Buddha statue in his room. He was thus able to get the right help to counter this. The help came in the form of the right advice from a person who had the Dharma knowledge.
My take is that this statue had originally been invited home by someone with evil or harmful intent/motivation., when he used this statue to connect him to the supernatural. Consequently, the beings he invoked to come forth via the statue decided to make their abode in the statue. So this statue carried a lot of negative energy because the beings had been evoked for evil purposes and decided to stay on in the statue.
I wonder if the breaking off of the head from the statue signifies that the beings had left the statue. Still the headless statue will continue to carry a lot of negative energy, unless someone skillfully and compassionately requests the beings to leave the statue?
“How can it take possession of a statue of a holy being?”
Maybe the statue was created by someone who consciously and continuously broke their vows. Who’s actions did not keep up with their words. Like a fruit that on the outside is fresh, clean and beautiful. But when you cut it open – it’s rotten. Like that, maybe this statue is beautiful. But the offering of this image is no good. It has been so contaminated it only attracts Demigods, Zombies and Hungry Ghosts.
I could be totally wrong, but that is what I think.
Rinpoche has always warned us never to leave hollow statues on any alter. They have to be consecrated , sealed and properly blessed before putting them on alters. This is to prevent any uncleaned/unpleasant things entering them, like in the case of our Hecelus Tan. Fortunately for him and his family, there were no further disturbances or mishaps occuring after ” the head of the statue broke.” What a paranormal experience that was. To avoid unclean things residing inside a statue, send the statue to Kechara Saraswasthy Arts (KSA) to have mantras inserted. You can go one step further by doing or ordering a Sungdrup and Rabnye puja to further sanctify and consecrate the statue. Even Buddha statues when it is hollow it will attract unclean things. is the statue in the story one in the picture above? the picture statue also has something eerie about it. i don’t believe a statue of a holy being is necessarily free from such influence – particularly if they are not consecrated or blessed or if they are faulty.
Statues that are hollow inside needs to be filled with holy items. This is what we term ‘consecration of statues’. Otherwise spirits will enter and remain in there. For those who are interested, you can checkout http://www.kechara.com/?cat=367.
Do not bring statues or antiques home without checking its source. You don’t know what they have been used for and by whom. In Sarawak, some tribes used huge earthen jars to keep departed ones. Later these jars became antiques but they have negative energies.
This is so scary and very interesting story…. For me, if I am Hecelus, I very sure I will tell my parents and I definitely won’t dare go inside my room anymore, till everything really settle down remove the beings, then only I consider will sleep back in my room again 🙂 haha…. Also if someone outsider give me something or my friend buy me something weird from other places that make me feel uncomfortable, I definitely won’t so simply take it or accept this gift…
This really show that any type of formless being can be in any type of statues or object. That is why most of the people would like to bring the statue for blessing in the temple.
Hecelus brave enough to tell his parents. Wise decision. Never keep anything ourselves. We are no expert as we need help we should seek help else it will become even worst.
If I were to be in Hecelus’ position I would definitely inform my parents. I am not so brave to have to sleep in my room with visitors hanging out. It was right for him to seek help from elders to guide him on the proper way to remove the beings.
His experience could be psychological. He was already wary of the statue and refused to have it in his room, but had to endure it since his father insisted. Hence, the experience could well be a manifestation of his fear.
I would definitely tell my parents to remove it on the spot. I will strongly object and not let them bring it home. 1 thing for sure, I will not wait for a week later to tell my parents. It is really scary to know how those spirits can manipulate people even when they are formless. Imagine if they are still alive, it must be scarier. They are just lonely and frustrated because they are stuck in that realm for so long.
