This is a true experience of a reader who sent in from United Kingdom:
I had just bought a new house in the UK and everyday at about 12 lunchtime there was always a cigarette smell in the kitchen. I do not smoke and I lived in the house alone.
Because I have had a NDE previously I am not scared by anything so I thought “no problems, if u died in the house before I bought it , it is OK. You can stay here BUT do not bother me ! ”.
Unfortunately “it” had other ideas. Twice at night the TV was turned off WHILE I was watching it.
After being there for about a week something else REALLY STRANGE happened. In the morning I was sitting on the toilet in the bathroom at the top of the stairs when VERY LOUD footsteps came up the stairs to right infront of me as I was sitting on the toilet with the bathroom door open. (The bathroom was directly at the top of the stairs).
I am a very strong person so I instinctively said “Go away !” in words that are far too rude to mention here. Actually I used the “f” word.
I was already a lay Buddhist so I decided to sort the problem out right away. I decided to face ” it ” head on.
That night as soon as it was dark, I turned all the lights off in my house, surrounded myself in white light (Guan Yin Pusa), asked for her to protect me and then I talked to it …..
Over and over for hours until the morning I sat on a chair meditating and repeating over and over the following message to it …
“You do not scare me, nothing in this world scares me. You are dead, it is my home now and you must leave NOW! If you do not go RIGHT NOW this white light will BURN YOU and make you leave. I do not want to hurt you.”
Please understand I am NOT a monk, nothing special; but since my NDE experience in a Helicopter crash I have changed and feel a power inside me that cannot be broken by ANYTHING.
The next day the house felt “warm”, and for 2 days there was a nice perfume smell in the whole house.
AND YES! NO MORE footsteps on the stairs, NO MORE cigarette smell in the kitchen and NO MORE TV turning off for no reason while I am watching it.
I should mention that I was experienced at this “protective procedure” as I have had many many similar experiences at Temples I stayed at in China since my NDE ..
Also, I have seen many ghosts in my life but this was definitely the rudest! HONESTLY! Can’t a guy have some privacy when he is on the toilet in the morning!
Ghosts have no manners at all!
Love and Peace,
John x.

This video gives a clear explanation in what condition spirits can find themselves in ,
in many different intensities If they appear to you,’this message has value for both ‘the death and the living’ Some are not even aware that they have passed but still strong ‘aware’ of their identity and territory as many of us … I think this video is a wonderful message to cope with this kind of phenomena And as you can listen to this video, they can too So if you have no answer for them put this video loudly, take some distance, head off and do the dishes, am aware that many ears can listen …. both ‘the death and the living’ can participate and benefit … that’s the nice part….
Dear John, I don’t think the spirit like you at all. But you are ‘lucky’ because the spirit actually did what you told him to. There are some spirits who lived for hundreds of years and they are more powerful than the other and the can create quite a problem. In fact, maybe even strong people like you may not even be able to win against these spirits. If it was me, I will try to not invade their house and maybe try to get another house.
Dear Rinpoche, I do not agree with John. The spirit kept on annoying him is because the spirit might not like living with another person that it doesn’t know. So that is why the spirit kept on interrupting John. Well you can’t blame the dead owner of the house is mad at a stranger living in it’s house because who doesn’t?
It is no doubt that the prayers of one to a Buddha can bless and protect them. But with John’s arrogances he will soon create more trouble for him, as he does not even respect these beings. It is correct that we should not be praying to them, but we should always have respect towards them, and not saying things or doing things that would offend them.
This is very neat story and it shows that one can solicit the Buddhas for help especially when one has strong faith in them. I think NDE in itself is an interesting subject matter. I have heard that people who have experienced NDE come back totally different.
I guess when you have stared death in your face, you will realize whats truly important in life. There’s very little to fear anymore since, we have experienced the most fearful journey itself – death. Buddhist practice for sincere practitioners is about the preparation for death by embracing what’s truly important.
That is a very interesting story by John.
Eversince i was young, i could ‘feel’ and ‘see’ presences . I think this is inherited from my paternal grandmother (who was very religious and had great conversations with her deceased husband – my grandfather- ), and i also found out that my sister and many of my cousins could feel and see too. – only the female descendants.
As i was aware of this since young, i thought everyone could see or feel like the way i do. It became just part of my life.
Until i met Dharma Protector Setrap and started doing my daily serkym and mantras that all the feelings and visions started slowly fading.away. I am most fortunate to have met Rinpoche who taught me so much.. Thank Buddha that i am now ‘normal’. heehee.
We really cannot suppress fear completely, or pretend we don’t feel it. Only thing is that as taught by Rinpoche, when they are in a ghost realm, they are suffering much more than anyone of us do,from loneliness, cold , hunger, thirst and great attachments. Many of these spirits can be nasty, harmful and normally angersome as they have suffered a lot of pains. In fact, for such spirits, they deserved our pity and compassion much more than our fear for them. That is why in Kechara, we always have been told to do a lot of mantras, prayers and practices, like Tsongkhapa’s migtseyma, Setrap, Green Tara etc.,etd., to generate the development of wisdom, compassion, skilful means, letting go of attachments, anger and the like! For sure, all these practices are for much higher purposes than protection from spirits, which seem a minor side effects. It is always the motivation that is of utmost importance, as assured by Rinpoche, who is always loving and caring for all his students and friends.
Yes, John is brave indeed to face off the ghost. Talking about the smell of cigarette smoke, I recall that many years ago, when I was staying in a hospital ward after a major surgery, i smelt whiffs of cigarette smoke coming to me from nowhere. That occurred on two successive afternoons at around the same time.I’m glad that I wasn’t unduly ruffled by it at that time. I was merely curious about it, but I dismissed it from my mind when it didn’t occur again on the third afternoon.
Perhaps, the ghost in John’s house had been occupying it for sometime already. It would be nice to show a little compassion for this fellow being who had been residing there before John moved in. Maybe say some prayers to appease the spirit and ask to be pardoned f.or staying there and occupying his space. In this way, the spirit will be appeased.

Ghost are just like us, they can feel loneliness too, and by making noises, instead of scaring us, I guess what they want may be just attention from us.
No doubt John is a brave person, however since he is a buddhist, perhaps it would be even better if he could do prayers and dedicate to the ghost. By doing this, not only the ghost will feel the care and his need of attention is also fulfilled. Most importantly he has an opportunity to be blessed by Buddhas.
Ghost is everywhere, they are just another form of beings. As long as they are not creating big trouble for us, I do not think we need to chase them away.
Being who stayed in the same place after death is due to their strong attachment to the place, During our lifetime,if we couldn’t learn to let go, if we are holding on something so tightly, even after death, we will be the same, but as a form of spirit, they can’t speak to people or get help from them, so they will try to attract your attention by creating sound or to disturb you, when people who do not understand, they will have great fear because spirit are the unknown to them. In fact, spirits are the same as human, they needed love and kindness too, so when we do our prayers, we can dedicate the merits to them so to reduce their negative karma and for them to have a better rebirth.
I would have to say that John is a really very brave person, I wouldnt know what I would have done if I were in his shoes. Most likely I will get some friends to help me with this situation. I am not that daring as John as to sit in the hall in the dark, meditated and repeated the same messages over and over again.
It is nice, however, to read that this formless being has chosen to leave the house after a single night of ‘conversation’. Even though these beings are formless, their abilities to create sounds, smells and movements and many other actions intrigue me. Although we cant see them, but they exist.
I have a friend who can see ghosts. She is quite used to it now and it doesn’t really bother her. Once a ghost tried to pull her blanket off while she was sleeping. She started to recite “Namo Amitabha” in Cantonese and it went away. Nowadays she doesn’t react to them any more. If she sees them, she just turns away. One day, she knew a ghost had been inside her bathroom and she scolded the ghost. Occasionally she smells incense in the house but it doesn’t bother her any more. I guess one gets used to things after a while and just get on with life.
Very interesting. I have no doubt that what John mentioned is true and the blessings from Kuan Yin is truly strong when one has the kindness of not wanting hurt even a ghost.
Ghosts are real… spirits are real. I too have had some brief encounters when I was younger, but nothing as scary like what John had gone through! I probably would have freaked out!
I recall when I used to live in a dormitory, the energy there was very unpleasant. I did not see or smell anything strange, but it felt very negative, claustrophobic, suffocating and even scared. I have always been a Buddhist/Taoist before I took refuge in the Three Jewels properly, so I would always chant the chinese mantra for Kuan Yin. It calms me and I feel the area around me become lighter. Through my experience, I totally believe what John said here and I’m glad that John managed to overcome this obstacle and can live peacefully in his house =)
Nice story. Would be great if you can share your NDE story as well, and the ‘power’ you now have after the NDE experience
