Dear friends,

I wanted to share this videos with you for the longest time and happy I can do so now. Learn, ponder and enjoy.

Reincarnation forms the basis of Buddhism. It is the pillar of belief which gives rise to the cause and effect way of living or karma. Reincarnation has been followed not only by Buddhism but by the one billion Hindus currently and also in the past many religions including Christianity.

But there has always been people not of any religious denominations or assigned reincarnation to any religion that have experienced it first hand and it has profoundly changed their lives. Very interesting.

Some of the videos are older from the 70’s, and not perfectly sharp/clear, but nevertheless, the evidence & research are very applicable and timeless.

I have found some incredibly intriguing videos for you to see and ponder. Please watch over them carefully. They are not religious in nature at all and at some points ‘scientifically’ measured. You will find it very valid as the presentation is very clear, direct and that it happens to perfectly ‘normal’ people. Please watch, enjoy, ponder and think deeper to the meaning of how we exist.

To those who are interested in this topic (reincarnation), it’s good to revisit these cases again especially seeing that these children have grown up so much such as the pilot boy, James 3. He, Dr. Jim Tucker and others were featured in Surviving Death, Episode 6 aired in 2021. There’s new story too such as a boy was said to be the once famous Hollywood agent, Marty Martyn.

    • Jacinta Goh on Mar 29, 2022 at 4:18 pm

Also, it’s good to revisit Rinpoche’s view about this. I find it interesting to read comments that Rinpoche has posted much earlier. Scroll down….

These videos are proof that reincarnation is not a Buddhist phenomenon, it is a law of nature. Reincarnation is the continuation of one’s existence of the mind lifetime after lifetime. The deeper meaning of reincarnation ties to the law of Karma and knowing that we are the designer to our own destiny. By knowing that our so-called “destined” shortcoming in this life is actually a result of our wrongdoing in our previous life, we should be motivated and inspired to do the right things now in order for our future to be better. It is very liberating because we are not forever bind to the situation we are in; we can always improve our situation.

There are plenty of these stupid videos that prove that the moon landing was a fake, we’ve been visited by aliens, mediums talk to spirits, reincarnation stories etc. It’s all nonsense for the gullible and those with a poor education. And I don’t call a trumped up degree (Honorary Doctor of Psychology, The Open International University) proof of education ….

    • Valentina Suhendra on Apr 15, 2017 at 4:13 am

      Dear Seth

The purpose of this article is to open the readers’ mind about reincarnation. Whether you like it or not reincarnation is not exclusive to Buddhism or Hinduism. Everybody has previous lives, present life and future lives. As you can see in one of the examples above where a young boy could remember his past life as a fighter pilot, and eventually convinced his parents that reincarnation exists.

You may think that the videos are fake or choose not to believe in reincarnation. However, there is nothing in your comment that provides ‘logical’ explanation to support your claims. Instead, you attacked Rinpoche’s degree and education, which is neither appropriate or relevant to the subject being discussed.

I hope you will refrain yourself from doing so, and instead promote a healthy discussion to support your stand or claim related to the subject at hand.

      Thank you

      Valentina

    • MartinC on Apr 15, 2017 at 4:22 am

      Dear Seth,

There are a number of points I find interesting about your comment.

Your premise seems to be that only education from renowned universities qualifies as ‘education’. That would mean that only those from the blue-label colleges are capable of thinking and the rest, not. I find that shocking. And I think you will find that the greatest minds and thinkers and people who shape the world are not from any famous universities but people who are prepared to go beyond the common and explore. They are people who are willing to learn and only with learning can there be progress.

Tsem Rinpoche’s blog explores a multitude of subjects to encourage us to think and expand our views and explore other people’s beliefs and thoughts. ‘Education’ is not merely the accumulation of facts and knowledge, but also training the mind to be open and to be able to consider all manner things and to be able to get the mind to THINK beyond our own prejudices. Thinking requires openness. Not thinking on the other hand…well, I guess you just need to be ourselves. On the basis that there are more things we don’t know that things we are experts in, I would say there is more advantage in being open-minded.

Whether you believe in reincarnation, UFOs and other seemingly mysterious things or not is not the point and that’s your decision. But to take the view that something must fall within our own views and beliefs otherwise they are stupid, does not mean that we already know everything. It can also mean we have not trained our mind to learn anymore or it could say that we are bigoted beyond reason.

      Thank you.

    • Pastor Adeline Woon on Apr 15, 2017 at 6:16 am

      Dear Seth Dayton,

      Thank you for your comment.

There are many people who share the same view as you and I respect what you believe in. However, I do not agree with your view which obviously excludes many possibilities you are not yet exposed to. But that’s ok because you can always learn.

I am glad that you have read about this post and learn something new. There are many post on this blog, yet you choose to read this one that challenges your long beliefs. You are very brave to do so because in the process you have allowed yourself to be opened and accept this new input which obviously has impact on your mind. Otherwise, you wouldn’t reacted in such manner.

The best thing to do when you are challenged is not to react with anger or to put people down, especially one who has kindly created this post that is meant to open other people’s mind but to relax and give yourself a chance to explore what you have not already knew.

Those who received good education do not necessary genuinely care to produce such a post or produce a blog like this that has so much knowledge to benefit many. Receiving good education does not necessary reflects a good understanding of various topics because education is limited in many ways. Some examples would be paranormal phenomena, mind’s functions, manners, relationships etc. that are not taught in school. Would you go around telling people who behave well or believe in relationship stupid, gullible and had poor education?

It is ok that you do not believe in different beliefs but it shouldn’t make you feel unhappy and caused you to hurt others. When somethings you do not know challenge you, choose to be positive and deal with it peacefully. Because leaving disrespectful comment on a personal space that you do not have to come in the first place show people who you really are.

Interesting article and videos.Reincarnation has been accepted for thousands of years, not only by Buddhism but by Hindus currently and also Christianity. There are many proven stories to support it by researchers around the world.A person’s rebirth is believed to be how we lived in a previous life all related to karma. To have a good rebirth close to Dharma ,we must practice, wisdom, kindness, caring, compassion and loving.
After watching those videos,i found Video No 3 ,the 2 indian children remembering their past lives very interesting.
Thank you Rinpoche sharing for these interesting article and videos.

  5. Irene Lim on Apr 13, 2017 at 1:39 pm

I fully believe there is reincarnation. If Karma is an universal law of cause and effect, it makes sense there is reincarnation. There are many studies and evidences pointing to reincarnation and that is what makes this world tick. And this is how transient migratory beings migrate endlessly and meaninglessly in the six realms in a vicious circle. When I contemplate on this law of the universe, my inner voice had asked “aren’t you already tired of the merry go around in samsara? ” Hence, today I take serious refuge in my Guru, Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.

    • Irene Lim on Apr 13, 2017 at 3:27 pm

I would like to add that I find the young boy who can remember that he was a fighter pilot in his past life the most interesting as he could recalled who he was and all the most technical details of his air craft.

  6. Sofi on Apr 13, 2017 at 2:43 am

Thank you for this interesting post on reincarnation and the many documentary videos. I find the 2nd story interesting as someone I know had shared of his vivid recurring dreams of flying as a American fighter pilot escorting a supplies plane during the WWII in Germany. Recently his dream expanded to show his battle with enemy planes where he shot down the enemy plane but he was also hit. Could these be dreams of his past life?

Reincarnation is such an interesting topic as everyone would wonder what they were in their previous lives. In believing the existence of reincarnation, we would have to believe in karma as it dictates where we will be born and in what conditions we will be born in. Then people will be so much nicer as they will realise practice of kindness and compassion will bring us good future rebirth whilst hatred, harmful actions will bring greater sufferings in future rebirth. As science improves, may researches based on undisputed evidences change people’s belief and start their practice of kindness for a good rebirth.

Karma and reincarnation are really two sides of the same coin and a deeper understanding of how they work together brings us a better perspective on our lives. It helps us to understand why we have the experiences we do – that they are not just a series of random events brought together by chance.

Namaste guru .I like so much this video .i want see more ……..?

  9. Pastor Shin on Jan 6, 2016 at 8:34 pm

Around the world, there have been many cases of children who at the age of two to four years start to speak of past events which they or persons around them believe to arise from memories of a previous life.

These alleged memories usually fade away after a few years and seem in most cases to disappear in the early years of primary school. In one-third of the cases, they were able to identify a deceased person whose life seems to correspond to the statements made by the child.

What is more convincing is that not only do these children have alleged memories, but in some, also the behavioural features/interests that the children display that was connected to their previous life.

Most of the children talk about their previous identity with great intensity and feeling. Often they cannot decide for themselves which world is real and which one is not.

Hopefully with more researches, there will be methods or ways to validate that reincarnation exists. But what is more important is that, if we know there is reincarnation, then what do we do with that knowledge ?

  10. Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai on Jan 6, 2016 at 4:42 am

Rinpoche told us before that the Buddha didn’t make up anything. The Buddha described what he saw and therefore what he teaches and describes will be the universal truth. To say it is a universal truth means that it is applicable to everyone, regardless of their culture. It remains true independent of their preferences, faiths or beliefs.

From this collection of videos that Rinpoche has shown us, it is clear that reincarnation is one such universal truth. For example, you have people in Sri Lanka describing reincarnation, but then you also have people in the USA who are witnessing their son telling them stories from a past life, which are so detailed that they can’t possibly be made up. They aren’t from a culture that believes in reincarnation and in fact, are incredulous and actively rejecting.

From watching these videos, we need to seriously consider – if the reincarnation that Buddha witnessed then described is true, then what else did Buddha teach is also true which, if we believe and apply, will bring us great benefit to understand? In these videos, I can already think of another teaching, for example imprints. If our imprints are so strong that they can be recalled during regression therapy, it means the memory is there in our consciousness but dormant. But the fact is that it is there waiting to be recalled, and the fact that it is there means it can (and does) have impact on our behaviour now.

So since reincarnation exists, and regression therapy shows there are imprints, then from life to life we will be carrying more imprints with us. So what kind of imprints do we want to make in this life, which we will carry with us into our next life and will actually serve us beneficially in our next life (compared to the ones we made in previous lives that we have to ‘suffer’ now)?

The proof of reincarnation is more evident than ever as people begin to overcome their fear of the unknown and gain courage to express their experiences of phenomena that science cannot explain.

Deeper understanding of reincarnation and karma really helps us answers questions like Why did this happen to me? Why is my life such? Why are my relationships such?

One of my favorite writings on reincarnation is by Brian Weiss – Many lives, Many Masters

  12. Balram Singh on Dec 6, 2015 at 2:31 am

reincarnation if it is a real phenomena it has nothing to do with religion or god but only science. science tells us that nothing can be destroyed or created but can only change form. therefore if reincarnation do exist it is not by some unknown divine cause but by by scientific cause and effect. the soul can be seen as energy held in the structure of living organisms.when the biological living organism is unable for whatever the cause to hold and keep that bundle of energy in place the energy which you may refer to as the soul will leave and we may refer to that phenomena as death.that energy/soul could carry with it information implanted on it by the living organism and that energy can exist as a unit of energy as what we may call the soul and capable of being transferred to another living living entity thus the phenomena we may refer to as reincarnation

  13. Wan Wai Meng on Sep 3, 2015 at 9:07 pm

I am a firm believer of reincarnation because there is ample evidence to support reincarnation exists. Not only that the Buddha mentioned about Reincarnation as well and Buddha would not lie.

I was raised to not believe in reincarnation but experienced ‘stuff’ that was or seemed like memory more than like imagination or than memory of imaginary stuff (like, I remember that novel = memory of imagination). I thought I may have managed to come back on purpose this time. I did think it made me special somehow, which it might not really do. Then I found out all the Hindus and Buddhists teach that everyone is reincarnated which gave new meaning to Jesus’ teaching that he can get people ‘off the wheel of rebirth’ and get them to heaven. I would be afraid to claim I am sure I am right due to the bad of arrogance and the danger that I may have made an honest mistake and be wrong. I watched some of those videos. It does seem amazing. There are websites online where you can read of different peoples’ past life memories. They are quite diverse and no one said they had been the Queen of England.

Reincarnation, I should say is one of the most debated religious topic among spiritual seekers. Hindus and Buddhist sworn by its teachings though not many can really claimed to have a true understandings its workings and abide by its law.

    i have a question….kindly answer it…
Do babies remember their past life….?
it is a serious question….reply with serious comments…

    • tsemtulku on Dec 2, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Many babies can remember. Many children can recall also. This is shown in the videos here. TR

    • Joy on Dec 20, 2012 at 5:21 pm

      Dear Mudassar Saleem,

Yes… in fact babies are more sensitive in recalling their precious life as they are fresh and have yet to be polluted/exposed by other new things in their new born life.
So much of their memory is still fresh. Hence, you will notice why it is very much a custom in Tibetan Buddhism to find incarnations of their Lamas and recognise them even when they are young. You can also read more here… http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/uncategorized/talk-on-reincarnation-by-h-h-dalai-lama.html

Also babies though new born or at a very young age tends to already inherit a certain type of character… you see certain babies, happier, some moodier, some have preferences, some sticky, etc… where does all this characters come from if not from a continuity of a mind that has a past. Hope it helped answer your question.

In the video secret of supernatural reincarnation by the 5th dimension, it is somewhat shown karma determined the live of people. Due perhaps to a misconception on the causes of karma, many people often feel helpless, and instead by using karma to help create good virtues to purify such actions done, easily succumbed to changing for better, which is conducive to its causes. Such remedial purification actions are what Lord Buddha taught, but one should not feel hopeless or feel that karma is always against them. As for proofs of excistence of reincarnation, the World famous Dr. Ian Stevenson used a collection of over 3,000 cases of scientific proofs in his files toverify that reincarnation is real! Instead of choosing to rely on Hypnosis to verify that a person has had previous lives, he collected thousands of cases of children’s datas who spontaneously remembers a past life(without hypnosis) which can be investigated using strict scientific protocols. Dr. Stevenson was said to have devoted the last 40 years of his life to the scientific documentation of past lives mememories of children from all over the world. Many people, including skeptics and scholars agree that these cases offer the best evidences yet for recarnation! As said by Rinpoche, “Reincarnation is a universal law, but in Buddhism, they teach you the happening within the universe, of which one is reincarnation. Buddha just taught what he saw and realised.”

  21. Sean Wang on Nov 30, 2012 at 11:33 pm

This is very cool. Reincarnation is a thing. Although some tv shows, create fictional stories. Proof of reincarnation has surfaced all over the globe. Reincarnation is an undeniable fact.

  22. patricia on Nov 30, 2012 at 9:17 am

I have no doubt in my mind about reincarnation. I myself vividly recall the last few moments of my former life. Having been reborn in a Christian country, nobody believed me. It created quite a problem for me when I was younger and living in a very rural area in the US where everyone was Christian. Now, I know that my karmic ties are Buddhist, not Christian, and I have learned to accept my former life. I just don’t discuss it often, especially with those who cannot comprehend.

  23. Andrew Boon on Nov 27, 2012 at 11:42 pm

Where do you stand on the concept of Reincarnation based on these very revealing videos: http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/film-tv-music/reincarnation-videos-you-must-watch.html

I posted the comment below about two and a half years ago and it is interesting for me to analyse that through watching these videos again, although my thoughts, perceptions and conclusions on this matter remain somewhat the same, I had somehow conveniently shelved this factual truth to suit my delusions till a rude ‘reawakening’ a day ago:

    “Dearest Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing these videos in order for us to have some form of discourse and self searching. To be honest I am more drawn to the videos with the children as they seemed more honest and “real” (dramatic ends to a life to me makes for a stronger inprint in my opinion and perhaps that is why the children could remember their previous lives at a more tender age?). The Regression videos seemed almost propoganda-like to me. However still thought provoking nevertheless.

I belief there is life after death and in that understanding we surely must have had a previous life human or not. And as such I belief strongly that the cause and effects of my actions are very much in play in this lifetime as they were in my previous ones. I still sometimes struggle with grasping the concept in its entirety but because of my personal journey and what I have been through and am going through in this lifetime, I trust this instinct within me. Perhaps this is faith but whatever words that my human understanding can come up with, it pales in comparison to the drive I know I have that compels me to dig deeper and learn more.

With your Eminence’s guidance, I am sure clarity is within grasp. If not now perhaps the seeds will be planted for my lifetimes after this.

Thank you again for making us look deeper within ourselves and much thanks to KIM and the e-division for their time and effort.
    With much love… Andrew”

What points and quotes that stuck out for me while watching the videos again are as follows:

    VIDEO 1
Secrets of Supernatural Reincarnation by the 5th Dimension

Shantidevi (Delhi) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’.

Acceptance of Karma and Reincarnation prevalent in India but somehow seems to make most of the Hindu population live in a ‘defeatist’ state of mind (wrong view that karma that rules one’s life and one has no way of changing it) and hence resulting in a ‘dormant’ society.

Not sure about why Shantidevi claimed towards the end of her life that it was God’s play. If it were the doing of creator God as such, why would there be karma?

Posible power of Suggestion… how much a child actually absorbs subconciously and hence could result in so called “recollections” of previous lives.

Demet (Turkey) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’.

Alawite sect of Islam that believes in Reincarnation. In the Quran there are references for the cycles – tasting death and coming back to life. In fact, the Prophet of Islam was threatened by the Creator that if he had accepted the others’ ideology he would taste life and death twice. From al-Isra.
(God is always used to ‘explain’ rebirth when the fundamental rule of karma counters that belief is an “action of a creator God).

Conventional pychology – Our personalities shaped by nature and nuture.
Some behaviours does not fit into this and hence the memories are ‘inherited’ somehow.

Physical manifestations from a previous life – Distinguisable marks carried forward from one life to another (if this is possible why not memories and recollections?)

Virginia (Ginny) Tighe (Colorado) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’.

Conspiracy theory on the succession of Dalai Lamas: Reincarnation institution carries on the laws of succession because momastics are celibate.

Proper way of recognizing a reincarnation (by HHDL): indication must come from the boy or girl. First let them clearly demonstrate their memory and their ability then on the basis of these factors, then choose or decide!

(to ensure there is no influence from the seeking party which is important!)

“If you look at death as a part of our life, birth, illness, old age and death is part of our life. If you accept or believe in the continuation of life then death is just one occasion!” – Profound and thought provoking sentences from HHDL

    VIDEO 2
Born Again? The James Linegar Story.

James Linegar (Lousiana) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’.

Why is it that recollections of a precious life occurs at a young age just when a child starts to speak – perhaps when the former life memories are not yet governed by cultural conditioning or the layering over of experiences of this life. These ‘memories’ would fade between ages 5-7.

Conflict between faith and Science (1 in 4 Americans regardless of faith believe in Reincarnation)

    VIDEO 3
    Children Remember their Past Life.

Sheroni and Shevanthi (Sri Lanka) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Simultaneous rebirths

Enoka (Sri Lanka) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’.

Pollock Twins (Northumberland) — Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Simultaneous rebirths. Distinguishable birthmarks.

    VIDEO 4
Reincarnation: The Story of a Scottish Child (The Boy Who Lived Before)

Cameron Macaulay (Glasgow) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Vivid recollection from age 2. Falling through “hole”. Inconsistencies of the recounts – some are perfectly accurate and some completely miss the mark (perhaps memories from previous lives merged into one).

Gus Taylor (Midwest, USA) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Reincarnation of a family member (Grandfather) within the same family. Recollected the memory of an Aunt (sister) who was murdered when the family never discusses about that. Falling through “porthole”.

    VIDEO 5 & 6
    Regression – Part 1 & Part 2

Cynthia Henderson (Australia) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Precise directions to the Chateau she used to live in her previous life. Spoke Frech fluently under hynosis.

Helen Pickering (Australia) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Incredibly detailed memories of the home from her previous life as a man (proven accurate by past architectural records that she could not have gotten hold of).

Jenny Green (Australia) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Horrific detailed accounts of living through the holocaust only a person who has lived it would know.

Gwen MacDonald (Australia) – Recollection with clarity and vivid ‘memories/accounts’. Drew markings of a stone floor while under hypnosis which proved incredibly accurate when checked.

“Who were you before?” – Very strong statement which sparks strong reflection for me!

MY REFLECTIONS ON THE VIDEOS IN GENERAL:

With regards to the reincarnation videos of the children… I wonder what it must be like for the child to have such recollections and not having the understanding. It must be confusing to have this fusion of two lives (or more) within one physical body. Almost schizophrenic.

With regards to the reincarnation videos of the adults… These videos for me seemed over-dramatized (I should know!). It was also filmed during the time when propaganda was rampant and could therefore been staged. Anyhow, I am not convinced by past life regression through hypnosis as it could be ‘suggested’ by the hypnotist.

According to Buddhism, especially Tibetan Buddhism, we emphasize on the preciousness of a human life and the difficulties in obtaining one. It is difficult because the main causes of having a foundation of the pure ethical discipline, augmenting with 6 paramitas and making a stainless aspirational prayer are not easy to be created altogether. These causes obviously support the idea of reincarnation. Although the idea of reincarnation is not widely accepted, the above videos have proven that reincarnation exist. Whether we believe in reincarnation or not, it is still the rule of nature that we are bound to follow. In the same way, we have to create certain causes to be reborn as a human again, irregardless of our religion beliefs. Perhaps the causes of the above-mentioned are universal and applicable to anyone of different beliefs, just like how the reincarnation works.

I am watching the first documentary, Secrets of Supernatural Reincarnation by the 5th Dimension and I am not surprised that there are so many cases of reincarnation in India. I am sure not all of the documented cases are authentic but I am sure many are real. It cannot be all are hoaxes.

I also think that there are many cases recognized in India because they have a background of the belief in reincarnation. Also, almost all of those that remember their past lives, died in a very traumatic way. I think the other thing is that the cases are not just in India but with people from all over the world.

At the end of the program, it is beyond the shadow of a doubt that reincarnation does exist and despite the obvious skeptics and I don’t think the children remembering their past lives could have picked up the details of a previous lives from everyday conversation. It’s just too much detail for a child to remember in order construct vey believable memories of previous lives.

Like I said on Facebook, amazing! And what about that jet fighter pilot? What does this say about Karma, non-virtues actions and lower realms? He has been born again in a human body… 60 years later…. 60 years of lower realms or is there no such thing as lower realms? I guess this question has to be asked… Again, amazing!

I’ve watched these videos before but today, i decided to watch again, the video of little James whose past life was a fighter pilot. What struck me was the question posted to the father of little James how he see his little boy now that he know this boy was someone else before.

It is understandable that parents look at their children as theirs and theirs alone and why not. No convincing is needed when you are the one to have given birth to the child. Can you imagine, how you would feel if that child of yours was someone else before? For many, they rather not believe that the child has had previous lives as it may not be a pleasant one. For some, there is a curiosity pull to look into our own past. Are you curious about your past lives? Why and Why not?

after watching the video of the reincarnated scottish child, the boy has the tendancy to repeat what he had done before. I realized that we all have the inclination to repeat what we have done again and again in all our lifetimes. Thus many of our mistakes, bad habits become stronger. unless we have to make determination to cut all these negativites in this life. If I have the ability to see my previous lifes , I will be very bored watching my past lifes as they are all repeated old stories.

    • Pastor Susan on May 12, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Yes.. aren’t we like some broken records, kept playing the same old! It it like that to certain extent but one of the traits of Karma is that it increases. This means, that if we are able to see our past lives, we would be able to see how one little negative thought or act leads to another and it multiplies exponentially. The same goes for each positive thought or act. So, it would be very enlightening if we could see into our past. That was what happened to Buddha..when he perceive the workings of karma in the countless lifetimes.

Well, for us who are not able to see, Buddhas and the holy Gurus teach us all these truths and emphasized the need to curb our negativities and increase virtuous. Pick to have trust and faith in the Buddha’s teachings OR keep trusting what we can’t proof just because we can’t see it.

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing the 5 videos with us. All the videos are mind blowing to me, but I find the video Children Remembering the Past most useful to me, whereby nearing the end of the video the old guy blurted out that his daughters graves no longer meant anything to him, but is just a symbol that 2 girls have lived and reborn.
That old guy is not a Buddhist and yet he has realised that death is not the end but is only a transition of our lives in the world (samsara) that we lived in by going the experience that he had with his 2 daughters.
It certainly reinforce my belief in reincarnation, even though I was already exposed to the idea of reincarnation since small but somehow I feel disconnected with it as Paris has mentioned in the above reply that we have not reached the level of mind to experience it ourselves yet.
It is still a taboo in our society to talk about death and reincarnation due to our grasping of wrong projection that everything would stay permanent. We are so afraid of changes that we shut our minds from the truth of existence. Everything changes and the only thing that doesn’t change is concept of impermanence.
May you have long life, no obstacles in your dharma works and be surrounded by sound and enthusiastic students.

  35. Jeffrey Gan on Jul 10, 2010 at 5:48 pm

I always have these questions going on and on about what will happen when i die? Where will i go? Is there heaven or hell? How do we know we are going to heaven or hell? Who determines that? Is there life after death? So is heaven or hell is the last destination after we die as a human? So if our destination is based on religion or what we do and who we worshipped, then what happenned to the animnals, inscects, and etc who don’t have the ability or oportunity. So where do they go?
I believe in reincarnation as it has been documented all over the world be it religious or not. Don’t some of you have experiences like.. you go to a place you have not been before and suddenly you have flashes of memories of that place.. like you’ve been there before in a dream but could not recall how and when you have that dream. Where do you think that memory came from?

  36. Justin Ripley on Jul 9, 2010 at 1:05 am

I believe in reincarnation, why not? I was brought up as a Christian, with the god concept, but it didn’t fit for me. I questioned it having seen shows from the 80’s show “that’s incredible” and “RIPLEYS: Believe It Or Not” that showed these kind of similar stories about this person remembering that life with these people.
Quite funny really, going to church, to listen to the gates of heaven then coming back home to watch the box and oooh and ahhh at reincarnation. Back in those days, the cultures were separated, well in childrens eyes they were, my family’s race came from the Polynesian islands (very Christian), Indian kids were associated with believing in rebirth and coming back as animals and insects. Well now as a Buddhist I know that it won’t matter at all if we can’t control our rebirth we will go where ever our karma will take us, unless we create the causes now. There is no guarantee that we will take another human rebirth.
THAT’S THE SCARY THING… just one wrong thought and doh…

  37. Carmen Koo on Jul 8, 2010 at 8:38 pm

Things that cannot be seen, intangibility, is usually hard to believe. I had always only known reincarnation as a theory, a make-believe conceptualization, and have never thought about it let alone watched any documentaries pertaining to its occurrence. First, thank you Rinpoche for posting up these videos. Thoroughly interesting and enjoyable to watch. I was glued to the screen! Watching the videos altered my opinions and made me realise that there is something deeper to looking at reincarnation, instead of likening it to a supernatural ability. The imprints from one’s previous life must’ve been embedded so deep into our mind that upon triggering it, the familiarity arises.
The comments posted above are all of high calibre. What struck me was Shirley’s comment on how “dejavu” occurs, the sudden familiarity of knowing a place that you’ve never been before or meeting someone that you’ve never met but feel the instant connection. These may be an explanation to imprints from a previous life.
The story on the little boy who was a pilot in his previous life was was beyond intriguing. His fascination, knowledge and familiarity with planes at such a young age cannot be explained by science – it can only root down to reincarnation and imprints from his previous life. What is more astonishing is his strong insistence of being a pilot before. It applies to all the other stories of the children remembering who they were in their previous lives as well, the inexplicable details that they are able to recall. Reincarnation is a phenomena not only applicable in Buddhism, but across many concepts, theories, religion and beliefs as well. Knowing the theory of cause and effect and how karma is generated, it has made me be more conscious and consider my actions, thoughts and words.

  38. Tsetchi on Jul 8, 2010 at 6:23 pm

    Hi Paris,
Thank you very much for the explanation. This seem logical, as some strong impact are surely more “fresh” in our mind than ones without importance, even if happened 200 years ago.
But maybe too, as some people does not have the awarness of other realms of the samsara and are conditionated to think only by human life, they can’t really open their mind to other kind of beings they could have been in past life.
So for exemple if someone think that only human life is possible in his beliefs, it could be hard for he to remember a dog life, an angry gost life or even a demon life, because in his mind there is this concept of “only human life”.
That’s why, as say Rinpoche, we have to meditate a lot to remember, to clear first all the concepts we’ve got in mind and after, we could be abble to remember with a clearer mind.
    But just maybe

  39. Peter on Jul 8, 2010 at 4:23 pm

    Terima Kasih Rinpoche!
    My own thoughts…
My own mind, from waking to sleeping, has seen many moments, thoughts..each with a seed for a cause, wholesome and unwholesome.
From moment to moment of the Mind, producing willed actions, actions leading to causes and causes springing into conditions…then into cycles, some more vicious than the other…
At a micro level…it all starts with a thought, moment to moment
At a macro level, accumulated thoughts, moments, snowballing into various conditions, each dependent on one another, then forming into what is known to us as humans as….Birth-Suffering-Old Age-Sickness-Death
And my mind is still working on the moment to moment…
    And the cycle re-starts…Birth-Suffering-Old Age-Sickness-Death
Finally when we have realised and broken through all of the above, in all of its inner, outer and secret causes…then the familiar ‘Gone, Gone, Gone to the Other Shore, Svaha!’ will ring true, then we can perhaps like the Buddha:
‘This is MY LAST BIRTH! There is no more return for Me’
I am longing for that day…what about you?

  40. Paris on Jul 8, 2010 at 12:41 am

I find it interesting that there are always endless debates over whether reincarnation really is a truth or not. These videos provide such stunning evidence that it DOES exist, and yet still, there *will* always be people who will doubt it, debate, argue endlessly over whether it’s true or not.
For some people perhaps, it is not good enough unless they can see it for themselves. At our level, right now, I’d have to say that no, we can’t ascertain for sure if reincarnation really does exist or not. We don’t yet reached that level of mind to be able to perceive it directly or experience it for ourselves yet.
BUT what I have found most helpful is to look at it in this way: believing in reincarnation has been very helpful to me in my life because it gives me a point of focus for my spiritual practice, my action and speech on a day to day basis. It is helpful for me to consider what I might have done in a previous time and how all those factors contribute to where I am now; it helps me to not bitch so much when things go wrong and to determine to improve what I am currently doing now so that I can go to a good place later.
(For other people, their belief in god, heaven and hell may be the most helpful point of focus for them to live well and fully, and that is fine if it brings them to the same place of compassion and wisdom!)
I think reincarnation videos like these show us very clear evidence of the result of our actions and how our actions at one time and place does manifest into results at a later time. (Fortunately, for these people, they came back as people!) It cements in me a faith in what can and will happen in the long time, and from there, we are inspired to do something meaningful also in the short term, within this very life. If nothing else, even if there *is* no “next life”, don’t we still want to have a great and splendid future within THIS life? I do!

  41. Paris on Jul 8, 2010 at 12:12 am

This has never been clear to me:
When we talk of “consciousness”, “soul” or more specifically in Buddhist terms, the “mind” – don’t they all refer to the same entity/energy? Isn’t it just different terminology to mean the same thing?

    • Helen (Oana Lascar) on Oct 4, 2010 at 5:43 pm

      Hi Paris,
actually there can be differences depending on the school of thinking. I am not a buddhist, I am here to learn and to take from buddhism what is best from me, so I can not answer from a buddhist point of view. I was hoping to get more details about which one incarnates from Tsem Tulku. If you will get more clarification please share with the rest of us:). In sanskrit literature, the mind = “manas” it is an organ of perception, an instrument used by conciusness to perceive. You can find more here http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O101-Manas.html
“In early Buddhism and present-day Theravāda, manas is regarded as virtually synonymous with citta (psyche) and vijñāna (consciousness), although it was included among the twelve āyatanas (sense-spheres) and eighteen dhātus (realms). In later schools of Buddhism, however, it is distinguished from those two. It came to be understood as that aspect of the mind which synthesizes perceptual forms derived from the six modes of perceptual awareness (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch, and mental awareness) into conceptual images. In Yogācāra Buddhism, it is counted as the seventh of the eight consciousnesses (vijñāna). It perceives the ālaya-vijñāna (store consciousness) which underlies it, but mistakenly apprehends this as a personal self (ātman) and hence is the location of that false belief.”

  42. Paris on Jul 8, 2010 at 12:10 am

    Tsetchi, cou cou!
Rinpoche has explained this to us before:
We might remember say, 10 lifetimes ago but not be able to remember something 2 lifetimes ago. This is because that particular lifetime was very very traumatic or had a very profound impact on our life, so the imprint of it is still very strong in our minds; much stronger than what happened in just the previous lifetimes, for example.
Think of it in this way: sometimes we will remember a memory from our childhood more clearly than our teenage years. This is because that particular event would have been much more traumatic for us, or had the greatest influence over the rest of our life. It works in the same way from lifetime to lifetime.
    hope that helps!

  43. ruby on Jul 8, 2010 at 12:00 am

I watched all these videos and the one that stuck out most is “Child Remember Their Past Life”. I remember Rinpoche telling us that babies when born remember their immediate past life. But of course they can not express in words. When they are young they will still remember as it is still fresh in their memory. However, due to the environment when they are growing up, their minds gets recondition and slowly these memories fade away. In this video, the girls even before coming to the top of the hill already commented that there is a playground ahead. They have never been to the place, how can they tell? Why do you think some kids are so musically inclined even when they are 2 to 3 years old?? The only explanation can only be that it is something they are familiar with in their previous life, how else can it be?

  44. Paris on Jul 7, 2010 at 11:57 pm

wow dude! I didn’t know you could write so well and so eloquently! I think it’s time you join our little happening KMP office and write Dharma!!!!!
I love your explanation about how karma is not about making us feel helpless but about creating conducive conditions for ourselves.
Karma may have determined where we are now (from past actions) but by that logic, karma will also determine where we are tomorrow (by our actions now). I love the buddhist explanations of karma because it is so empowering – we take responsibility for where we are now and for what we have done, but by that same token, the ball is also in our court RIGHT NOW to create fabulous things for the future. There’s no way but up!
(by the way, fantastic teachings about karma now and forever in Rinpoche’s book and classic video teaching “Snakes, Roosters and Pigs” see it here, buy it, carry it around in your pocket and change the world: http://www.kechara.com/publications/publications/tsem-tulku-series/snakes-roosters-and-pigs/

Thank you Rinpoche, Chris, Shin, and Jean Ai for putting this collection of videos together. What sticks in my mind is what Rinpoche said about “Previous lives is not the domain of Buddhism, it is universal law.” I like the first video as it showed examples from non-religious experience of the little girl, couple with that science and Tibetan Buddhism has to say about Reincarnation. Very informative video to get people to think about life…It is actually much harder to not believe in reincarnation than to believe. ok, i like ALL THE VIDEOS! I like reading, learning, thinking about reincarnation every since a young kid.
People who are closed to exploring the possibilities of Reincarnation usually use the reason that there’s no proof when there’s plenty only if people were to be open to listen. Now, I’d like to post the question back to these people.. “What proof do you have that reincarnation DOESN’T EXIST?!” Show one.

  46. margaretlee on Jul 7, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Thank you Rinpoche for compiling all these videos for our learning and understanding of past lives memories and reincarnation.
Even though I was raised as a Christian and attended bible class when young, I had never agreed with the belief that when one die, you either go to hell or heaven. It just didn’t make any sense to me. I have always wonder why I am in this body, the thought of the soul and body as two different entities was very strong with me.
When it comes to matters like previous lives or future lives, I am just naturally drawn towards it. The video I like most is on past life regression. I have once read the book on “many lives , many masters” written by Dr. Brian Weiss, a trained psychotherapist, has many true accounts of past lives regression. Dr Weiss himself was a Christian and he did not believe in past or future lives. The turning point came when on one occasion that he was giving treatment to his patient Catherine, under hypnosis, Catherine started to recall places and names of her previous lives. And knowing catherine very well, Dr Weiss assured that there was no way she could described the places, buildings, to the effect of how people were dressed at that time so well. In total the Catherine recalled over 80 past lives under the hyponsis, that Dr Weiss felt the urge to write a true account of Catherine’s experience. Some of these hypnosis were being recorded. And on one occasion, Catherine’s voice became very deep and sounded like a man, talking to Dr weiss that he was a protector, (yes, the use of the word protector rather than guardian angel) and that humans should repair their sins and negativities, if not these sins and negativities would be carried forward and they would have to suffer the consequences.
This matches very well with what we are taught in Buddhism, even though past lives theories , law of casue and effect are not just restricted to Buddhism, rather that it is the law of the universe.

Youtube is indeed the best place to look for interesting videos of any sort. Thank you for helping to discover these great videos. These people are living proof of the existence of reincarnation, yet skeptics still don’t believe in the truth. I find it quite odd that a person can be reincarnated as his own grandfather and know everything that only his grandfather would know. I did not think it would be possible for a person to have consecutive human rebirths in the same family as the chances of a human rebirth for anyone other than those who have can control their deaths and rebirth. I found the Scottish boy video very interesting and the boy is also very CUTE!! I am quite confused as when some of the children go to the places that they mentioned they have went to in their past life, they seem to forget about the whole past life they used to be able to remember.

  48. yoke fui on Jul 4, 2010 at 4:06 pm

One of the “ Reincarnation” videos that stays on my mind is the boy that kept saying his home is on an island and insisted his mother took him there.
When I was studying in New Zealand I went to the university by bus. The bus passed by an old dilapidated house on a small hill with a swing in front of it. I always got a dajevu feeling whenever I passed by this place. I feel as if I know this place which is strange because I never visited New Zealand before I went over there to study.
The purpose of watching these videos is to help us gain a strong conviction in past and future lives which is one of the fundamental basis of Buddha’s teachings. Having gained this conviction we must apply the law of karma , avoid committing negative actions and try to engage in as many virtuous actions as possible.
Thank you Rinpoche for always using various means to help us establish a firm foundation in the dharma.

  49. E Cheah on Jun 14, 2010 at 1:04 am

The videos on regression are quite interesting. I am just intrigued as to why people would go to such lengths to try to dig into their past, possibly as a means to try to uncover trauma experienced long before and hopefully to find healing. But what is the point? Whatever happened has happened, nothing we can do to change that and would it not be better to focus on improving our future? Some might still think there is no black and white proof that reincarnation exists, at least not at our current state of mind. Ok, to the uninitiated, maybe there is, maybe not. But WHAT IF there is? Do we just gamble on our lives just because we can’t see proof? And if there is, where are we going? The prospect of being tossed around life after life without any control is scary. I’d rather assume there is and prepare and try to influence a positive outcome. The theory of karma and reincarnation makes perfect sense and gives us full control to harness whichever outcome we wish.

I personally like 3 of the 5 videos – Secrets of Supernatural Reincarnation by the 5th Dimension, Reincarnation: Past Life Evidence and Reincarnation: The story of a Scottish Child. Memories accounts of people who remembered their past life experiences, where they had lived, who their parents were etc…were crystal clear and detailled. Unless we had such experiences otherwise it would very difficult to describle exactly what happened. Some of us may not remembered our previous life but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have one. My guess is that we have been so caught up with the many activities of this life and couldn’t remember our life before the present one. Thanks for sharing these videos, they have indeed deepen my belief in past previous life.

I liked the video with the child-pilot. “That’s not a bomb, mommy, that’s a drop tank.” I don’t think most ADULTS could make that distinction on an aircraft, including myself. Fascinating to watch both parents attempt to dismiss him with logic and finally ending in belief. All while maintaining their own religious perspective. I like how the mother was able to explain the ‘new’ concept of reincarnation from the words of her own religion. Also she was from the South. Convincing a Southern woman of re-incarnation is a tough sell!

  52. Julia on Jun 2, 2010 at 1:10 am

    Dear Rinpoche,
After watching the video, i realized that Melissa had shared the one reincarnated from a pilot and also the one from his own grandfather. All the stories are interesting and so real especially these two. Those that remembered their pass life in 200 years or 60 years ago, they must had been reborn into other realms before they came back to this life. I am actually waiting to see if there’s people who can remember what happened while they were in bardo or realms before they came back.

  53. Helen on Jun 1, 2010 at 6:49 pm

I like the video with Scottish boy and the one with the former pilot. I also recommend you the amazing documentary “Unmistaken child” (2008) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1286798/
Buddhist believe is that the consciousness incarnate not the soul.
Do you think a consciousness can incarnate in 2 persons in the same time, like some people say is the case of 17-th Karmapa?

  54. Wendy Ho on Jun 1, 2010 at 6:03 am

    Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for posting up these interesting videos for everyone. I especially like the video on the boy who could remember his past life as a fighter pilot and the little girl who could remember her family from previous life. The details of which they can recall is simply amazing. These are evidence that cannot be disputed that reincarnation exists. Personally, when I was younger I did have strong feelings of familiarity when I was at a certain place or been with some people although I know for a fact that in this life it has never happened before. In some small ways, I felt that I could relate to the children in the video. Although I did not remember anything as clearly as they did, I believe those experiences could have been a glimpse of a past life.

  55. Shirley Tan on Jun 1, 2010 at 12:02 am

I forgot to mention that what I truly value most about all these Reincarnation videos is the fact that it unites us all – by the mere fact that we could reincarnate or have been reincarnated at some point in time, as many different beings – be it a young Jew, a French woman, a monk, a fish, a courtesan, a Scottish boy, a Muslim teenager in Turkey – we are all “one big family” living in this same space called, Earth. Hence, we are all really just sentient beings – devoid of labels, names and tags. There is really no great divide between you and I. We may have been friends, brothers and sisters, or even parent and child. Peace and harmony between us all should not be that difficult then, should it?

I don’t understand why there is some people that can remmember their previous lives something like 200 years ago but not what happened between these periods and their present life. I mean, it’s like there was nothing between their present live’s birth and previous life’s death 200 years ago…
    Can you explain Rinpoche please?

  58. Wan Wai Meng on May 31, 2010 at 9:32 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,
I like the regression videos the best. I felt the women who were the subjects of this investigation were not predisposed to the concept of reincarnation, or Buddhism or Hinduism for that matter. I felt they were just as surprised by what they found out throughout the experiment . Plus the people who could access , the older versions of the languages is proof that these people do have memories of a past existence.
The coincidences especially those mentioned by Rose Duncan, the probability of getting it so accurate is statistically quite impossible .

  59. Tsetchi on May 31, 2010 at 9:19 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,
I am watching Regression, the second part. This is for me the most interesting video because I wanted in past use hypnosis to make me remember my past lives.
I was Christian but already believed in reincarnation.
This is amazing how the lady is speaking French under hypnosis, I can understand her perfectly and her accent is stunning, knowing that she do not speak French in this life. This clearly shows that we have so muck knowledge somewhere hide in our mind.
They are speaking of human lives, but not others. It’s strange because when I was really young girl, I remember seeing “memories” of myself as a fox. This is really strange, it’s sad I can’t remember human previous lives, maybe it’s my first! hahaha! That’s why I believed in reincarnation in childhood, far before going in Buddhism and know about reincarnation.
I think that memories are not lost, but stock in the mind lives after lives, we just have too much ignorance to see it, too much veils. Buddha saw his previous lives as he had a clear mind which was free from all veils.
I think that posting these videos was a great idea, and this is nice that science tries to understand reincarnation in a serious way, and not only reject it. I hope that this will help people to be more open, even if they do not believe, they try to understand it.
I loves the video from the little Scottish boy too (he’s so cute), but we see here clearly that memories can be different in childhood in this life as we perceived it with our judgements in adulthood in the previous. As adult we’ve got judgement on our reality, as you say a child will see things, speak about things without concepts or judgement.
    Thank you very much 🙂
    Much love !

Dr. Ian Stevenson published more than 2,500 case studies from around the world of children that seemed to him to be able to remember events in a life that had ended, often in a violent way, before the child was born.
I think what impressed me most is his approach in comparing each child’s account with the personal history of the deceased and the best evidence for reincarnation was the existence of birth marks and congenital deformities on child on children which he reported corresponded to fatal wounds of the deceased. The unusual behaviors, such as phobias for the thing that killed the deceased, and in some cases the mother having a dream in which the deceased announces their intention to reincarnate in the child, were also evidence of reincarnation .

There are many researchers who dedicate their lives to do research on reincarnation-
Dr. Ian Stevenson collected 64 statements of Past life memories from Lanka, Lebanon, Turkey, Thailand and Burma which are accepted by the American Society for cyclical research and which is proven by the Journal of Nervous and Mental diseases, Journal of American Medical Association, International Journal of Comparative Sociology.
Many scholars came forward to find out the facts about the existence of the soul and reincarnation such as John Hick, Paul Edwards and Arthur Burger and Dr. E. Haroldson of the psychology department of the University of Iceland.
Dr. Antonio Mills of the University of Virginia has documented 26 cases of past life which involved people of Islamic background whose past lives had been Hindus and six children raised in Hindu families but were Muslims in a past life. The same type of proof is in Christian and Jewish families.
Dr. James W. Deardoff wrote a popular book, Jesus In India and Mr. A Bloxamm and Michael Newton tape recorded over 400 examples of Reincarnation. In many episodes, TV producer Jerry presented this on BBC and wrote a book called ‘mask of the soul’.

Rinpoche’s reply to Dr. Ming has reminded me of a story on how the Greek scholars remember theories or things. In one of those story a student requested a great master of memory to teach him on how to remember thing, and without saying a word the master walked toward him and gave him a hard slap on the face. Of course at this point of time the student was very angry but at the same time the master said something that cause the student to rejoice instead of being angry. He told his students that he had taught them the way of remembering.
This shock maybe the cause that resulted in why people who passed away in a violent way to remember their past life???
Both story of the reincarnation and the Greek scholars showed how powerful imprint (experience) can affect one in this present and future life and thus technique that help one to familiarize the mind with virtue thoughts is so important.
The human mind remember best through familiarizing and shock. This mean that human remember better if a thing is repeated again and again, this is why the sangha of the old have recite the sutra again and again. And lama practice their sadhana day after day after day; this is to familiarize their mind with the dharma. This is important because at the moment of death if one is familiar with virtue thoughts then one will have a pleasant rebirth and it is this familiarization that direct how one react to an situation if no time is given for one to think (and death usually come without warning).
Another alternative to reinforce memory is through association of events or images. The ancient Greek scholars uses visualization and according to their experience and system one remember better if image is more unique.
In vajrayana, images of deities were used for mediation with each of the body parts, gestures and instruments representing the dharma. The wrathful deities which are more “unique” enhanced the dharma familiarization process.
“This showed how scientific and systemic Buddhism is”.

Thank you so much, Rinpoche, for taking the time and trouble to select these reincarnation videos & sharing them with us. This has been a subject that has fascinated me for the longest time. Simply because I have always felt that if we are here now, then we could possible have been here before this and could possible be here again in the future. Also, the un-deniable feeling of “Dejavu” that have happened to many people – regardless to their faith, creed, race and culture. That strange familiar feeling that we have been some place before, seen or done something before, and even met someone before – so many examples to cite and yet, no real logical explanation can be given in such instances. Hence, I have always been very curious how much the mind remembers and how accurately it actually retains memories. Personally, I have read quite a few books on this subject – especially those written by Dr. Brian L. Weiss who is a trained adn certified Psychotherapist in the USA. He is one of many who made Past Life Regression very ‘mainstream’ when he published his books: “Same Soul, Many Bodies” and “Many Lives, Many Masters”. Dr. Brian Weiss himself was totally blown away and astonished when he first discovered that there was such a thing. And he was also brought up in a middle class America, very Christian environment – not believing in such things prior to a fateful session with one of his patients, Catherine, who was under hypnopsis at that time. It was a life changing moment for him and Catherine from that moment on. On a daily basis, we hold many different memories as it is. How much we remember and how accurately we remember will also present different answers to the puzzles in our lives. I do not believe that the argument that supports the existence of Past Lives fails when someone fails to recognise someone or something in this life, because some memories may be hard to recall for whatever reason. Especially painful ones. The fact that some people can recall something so far remote from their present lives is already proof in itself that we were all here before. And I do not believe that the theory of Past Lives rob us of our responsibility and desire to live out our current lives in full. Because, there is always the obvious and explicit existence of “free will”. As much as we are ‘recycled’, we also have the natural birth right to exercise our free will and that determines what choices we make one life after another. After all, this why we ended up with the state we are in now – be it in this life or the last. We made those crucial decisions and they have lasting results and effects. But fate and outcomes can be changed, when we ourselves make that change. One thing I do appreciate in the existence of “Past Life Regression” as conducted by medically trained therapists, it ‘legitimises’ the reality of it all. As always, in our currrent society, if it can’t be explained by Science, then it is illogical. And so, when doctors certify them, then it cannot be false. In any case, someone or anyone becomes a firm believer when they experiences it for themselves. Until then, they need to be persuaded or convinced. Because how can anyone believe in something they have not felt, seen or heard of? I totally echo what Rinpoche said earlier – whether we know or remember anything at all is not as important as what we choose to do with it and how we have benefited from it and become better people. That is the most important key issue here – how has anything in our lives helped us into becoming better examples of humanity. Thank you for sharing, Rinpoche. It is always a mind blowing lesson.

these are some rather thought provoking vids – love them! thank you for sharing, Rinpoche.
there are many intellectual debates and arguments over the topic of reincarnation through the ages. so much so, some have resorted to different alternative to seek out some truth, or proof to the matter. one of the methods was covered in the vids, in the form of past life regression (PLR) – journeying into one’s past lives while in the state of hypnosis. while it is true that many patients recall past lives, i have read that it is highly probable that their memories are false memories. the memories are said to be from experiences in this present life, pure products of the imagination, intentional or unintentional suggestions from the hypnotist, or confabulations. some experts argue that we can never be sure about what is actually real and so must confabulate all the time to try to make sense of the world around us… time to introduce these ‘truth seekers’ KMP’s publications – seeing that there is no 1800-HireAGuru hotline! :p
just a thought – the bodies one passes in and out of need not be human, correct? with this piece of fact/belief, there are some tribes who would avoid eating meat because they believe that the souls of their ancestors dwell within those animals. an interesting angle to promote vegetarianism… don’t you think? hehe.
p.s. being a rather curious creature myself, i can’t help but wonder who/what i was in my previous lives. what wonderful stories one could write should we all have access to those information. fyi – my favourite vids are those studies based on children’s accounts 🙂

    Dear Tan Chye Sing,
You don’t have to convince them of anything.
You just practice yourself and show results and be firm in gaining ground in your personal transformation.
Everything not in alignment with Protestant theories are certainly not negative as these prejudices are made up by some people in the past for whatever reasons they personally had.
Forgiveness, compassion, harmony and genuine respect for others are religious ideals that are upheld by all spiritual traditions.

    dear Lili,
Yes children are very good to see. They usually speak what they see and without the confinements of societal prejudices that become suffocating as they grow up.
In the tibetan tradition of recognizing tulkus, it is best when they are very young so the recollection of previous lives is very sharp and clear. Because the transition period was not that many years ago so memories are fresh.

    Dear Rinpoche,
I like all the videos and the regressions the best.Thank you for preparing these videos for us.Watching these videos, hearing confessions from children too young to know how to lie and the regressions videos do give me great sence of conviction that the theory of reincarnation is true and real.I have never truly believe in reincarnation until I come to know Buddhism, and after that I heard this word again and again and heard real stories about it,since its a fundamental believe in Buddhism,I go along with it not thinking much,I thought I believe in reincarnaton now but it gives me the creeps watching it and hearing first hand accounts of children and real normal people relating to it.

  69. Thierry on May 31, 2010 at 1:44 am

As a european (fair to say an average one) who grew up within a culture that did not adopt or re-cognize rebirth, I think it is interesting to share here that the topic of re-incarnaion has always been a hot one for as far as I can remember, this is something that would be talked about and discussed amongst friends, family, and even with our school teachers.
It was discussed always with an open-mind, well, at least, that was my experience of it.
I remember discussing it as a child, as a teenager an after, and these discusions were not necessarily associated with a discussion on buddhism.
I clearly remember that as a child and up to maybe 10 years old, I was often wondering what my previous life was, an everytime I came across hearing about someone who had died little before my birth, I would say to myself “maybe that was me then”…
I later lost touch with that and came to loose confidence in re-birth though, until very recently.
We find that most of us humans are very open-minded, or at least curious about rebirth -these documentaries are demonstrating it- regardless of the culture or background we are coming from.
The topic of re-birth is a common topic, and not only a buddhist topic, it is simply discussing facts about that strong possibility that the consciousness occuring in a foetus is unlikely “appearing” or “created” from a physical-biological sequence triggered by the fertilization of the female cell by the male cell.
So where does it emerges from?
Where do habits come from? Habits that we all have seen being so strong already in the behavior of toddlers.
Applying intellectual thinking over the strong possibility of the reality of re-birth is opening to a vast array of WHY? and HOW?
It makes spirituality potent, and leads to the next topic of “cause and effect”. Indeed, if I have taken rebirth, then how did it come to happen in this body, this shape, this or that country, this time, with these parents, etc… Does rebirth occur random or not? If not, then how does it operate? If it operates specificaly, can it be controlled? How? Who? etc…
Sometimes, I wonder if it is not easier to reject re-birth as a possibility rather than acknowledge its possibility and contemplate on the questions that arize from its recognition. But then again, it can only be easier for a short “while”…
I rather choose to acknowledge its very strong possibility an lead my life accordingly, and with the guidance of those who would definitely know more than me about it.
Having said this, I did not like the documentaries too much, they came aross to me as half-scientifcal, half-sensational, not conclusive.
The one that was perhaps better than the others was the first one because someone said in it: “CONSCIOUSNESS IS HARD TO EXPLAIN AT A BIOLOGICAL LEVEL”, and that is, I think, the best comment I found through all of the documentaries, it is a comment that, coming from a scientific, opens up a lot of possibilities and avenues to think deeper.
For those who are curious about rebirth, I’d still say: “watch these documentaries, and as with everything, keep an open mind”.
Thank you for sharing these with us Rinpoche.
    With respect and gratitude.
    Thierry

    Dearest Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing these videos in order for us to have some form of discourse and self searching.
Perhaps this is faith but whatever words that my human understanding can come up with, it pales in comparison to the drive I know I have that compells me to dig deeper and learn more.
With you Eminence’s guidance, I am sure clarity is within grasp. If not now perhaps the seeds will be planted for my lifetimes after this.
Thank you again for making us look deeper within ourselves and much thanks to KIM and the e-division for their time and effort.
    With much love… Andrew

    Rinpoche,
I was watching the video on Regression and what struck me was the length of time between the ladies’ past life and her current one. How is it that she is recalling a life 200 years ago? Is it that she has not had any other lives in the interim and was in bardo the entire time, or that she might have been in a different realm and cannot remember details of that life?

    Dear Dr Ming,
1.Having physical scars/marks/beauty marks that your born with that resemble a wound/activity from a previous life is not unusual. Within the reincarnated lamas, those who do alot of mandala offerings for example in their previous lives will have a spot on their inner wrists. My personal guru showed me this on his inner wrist. In his previous lives he did hundreds of thousands of mandala offerings. I saw it also.
    2. Some Rinpoche’s incarnations bear the same beauty mark on their bodies their previous lives had. And this is one confirmation it is them, along with a battery of other confirmations necessary.
    3. For ordinary beings, dying a violent death creates alot of fear, and tremendous attachments arise, hence in this life it can be the cause of certain phobias and traumas. When they died, they didn’t want to die and they hold on to that thought with great fear and anxiety and didn’t let go, so that imprint is very strong in their minds affecting them now again. That makes alot of sense.
    Thanks..

  75. dr Ming on May 30, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Very interesting videos. I do agree that we have to be cautious about the first few videos which are a bit sensationalised. The subjects in these seem to all have very violent deaths, and I am not sure why. Is it that it just makes it a more interesting story? Am also a bit dubious about the physical scars of the reincarnates which is supposed to be the same as in their previous lives. Therefore I agree with Dr Chong, that the last 2 videos on regression seem to be a more unbiased, fairer presentation on reincarnation, which is great to show others.Thank You Rinpoche, for the videos.

  76. Wu Yew Seng on May 30, 2010 at 9:29 pm

Modern science has since showed evident that all the elements in the known universe are recycled and in fact we are all formed from the materials from stars.
“If everything in the universe are recycled, then why not the conscious?”
However, there is one thing to take note, is that the concept of reincarnation in Buddhism is not about an “unchanging soul”, it is about the continuation of the ever-changing conscious, because in Buddhism all phenomena are without a fixed “self”.
From the video Secrets of Supernatural Reincarnation by the 5th Dimension, a person pointed out that karma predetermined the life of people and very often people feel helpless and even give up on changing their life for the better. The observation is very common and is very real; this maybe caused by the misunderstanding of karma.
To me karma is to understand causes and effects and from understanding causes and effects know how to create conducive situation for oneself; no matter it is mundane or non mundane purposes. In science, we understand how thing works first and from there manipulate the situations to our favors. The Buddha also taught karma to us for this very same purpose; it is to help us to create karma that are conducive to us and not against us or to make us feel helpless. So having bad karma is not the reason to feel helpless but instead practice the Dharma, change the mind, do purification, create positive karma and “relax”.

  77. dr chong on May 30, 2010 at 9:25 pm

Thank you for making these videos available to us. I felt that the earlier ones with the melange of sinister music, violence and the sensationalism a bit scary. The last 2 on regression seemed a fairer investigation with an external auditor. The psychologist in these 2 videos also seemed skilled and truly cared for his test subjects.

  78. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche on May 30, 2010 at 9:10 pm

    Dear Ng,
    1. Most ppl can remember their previous lives or bits and pieces of it up till around 5 years old. Then at around that age, school, friends, events, lessons, parents, culture of this life starts taking over and we forget those memories. The key word is they are FORGOTTEN but not lost. We are inundated with so much new data and experiences and the new experiences start taking over. Whatever happened today is fresh in your memory today, but starts to fade by next week, the next month, the next year, the next decade and so on. It is similar to this example.
    2. High lamas or those who train their minds can remember previous lives at will at any age. But there are adults who have trained their minds from previous lives/this life that there minds are sharp and hence can remember. Why they train and why they remember is the KEY DIFFERENCE. REMEMBERING IS NOT A VERY BIG FEAT. Remember your previous lives is not a high ability or the results we aim for in practices and meditations. It is a side product. Remembering your previous lives is not NECESSARILY a spiritual experience. Previous lives are normal and happen to everyone, remembering them takes practice, or hypnosis then you can. The key is the mind has to be relaxed and focussed.
    3. Just simply remembering your previous lives does not indicate high spiritual attainments. It is what you do with that experience. If it increases your ego and pride and you show off then it didn’t help. If you become lax thinking you’ll enjoy yourself now because you have another life and another chance in the future, would be wrong view because your future lives maybe will not afford you the freedom you don’t have now. If you realize that you are going to die and take another rebirth and do something about it positively in a spiritual manner, then remembering previous lives is useful. If knowing that you have future lives and they are in your control if you follow the law of cause and effect and act accordingly then it is very useful to have this experience.
    4. Previous lives is not the domain of Buddhism, it is universal law. But in Buddhism they teach you the happenings within the universe of which one is reincarnation. Buddha taught what he saw and realized.

Thank you for sharing these videos to us in your lovely blog. I was glued to the screen watching and it was very interesting and the video were nicely done.
Even people from different beliefs have came out to admit that there are actually reincarnations. Videos above proving thoughts of reincarnation does not exist is actually wrong and making a strong sense to people that believing in karma.
People now starting to believe as many evidence has been made public and hopefully people who watched these videos will benefit their live and do good for the FUTURE LIVES.

  84. Joy Kam on May 30, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Reincarnation is not just another belief now, it is a fact and many more people are starting to see it as part of the laws of nature, not religion. These people on the video aren’t even Buddhist!
Scientist and doctors can’t explain it but don’t deny it either. This is perhaps the answer to why some are born with certain skills, IQ or talent that is natural, that nobody taught them but they just know it. Buddhism and high reincarnate Lamas are definitely a possible.

  85. ng on May 30, 2010 at 9:39 am

I’m just curious as to why, some of these people remember their past lives. Some were not even buddhists in their past lives, they did not train to remember. They have some of the abilities of the high lamas that have dedicated their lives to the training of the mind.
