China builds world’s largest radio telescope to hunt for aliens
DAILY NEWS 4 July 2016
By Andy Coghlan
Covering an area the size of 30 football pitches, China’s Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) was officially completed this week, making it the largest radio telescope in the world.
The huge disc was assembled from 4450 individual triangular panels and dwarfs its nearest rival — the 300-metre-wide Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. It should enable the detection of many astronomical objects and phenomena whose radio signals are too weak and distant to be picked up by smaller telescopes. Oh, and it will listen out for aliens.
“The size of this telescope is key to its scientific impact,” says Tim O’Brien at the University of Manchester in the UK. “The bigger the telescope, the more radio waves it collects and the fainter objects it will be able to see.”
Construction of FAST began in the south-western province of Guizhou in 2011, and it is situated in a natural bowl-shaped feature that is ideal for housing the colossal concave disc. The telescope has been designed so that individual panels can be rearranged to focus on and track radio waves from specific objects of interest, which will give the dish much greater range and sensitivity than rival dishes.
O’Brien says FAST will enable more-detailed studies of pulsars: ultra-dense collapsed cores of exploding stars. “We may even find [more] pulsars outside our own galaxy,” he says. “It will also allow us to survey hydrogen in very distant galaxies, detect molecules in space, search for natural radio wave emissions from planets orbiting other stars and help in the search for radio signals from extraterrestrial civilisations.”
Zheng Xiaonian, deputy head of the National Astronomical Observation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, says that observations will commence in September after the telescope has been thoroughly tested.
O’Brien expects that China will periodically allow astronomers from outside the country to use the telescope. “Europe’s Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network, where we link radio telescopes across continents to create a telescope with an effective diameter the size of the planet, already incorporates radio telescopes in China, and we expect FAST to take part in these observations.”

Amazing …China ‘s scientist are doing in order to search more on extra-terrestrial life, dark matter and distant pulsars, they built a radio telescope. Imagine it’s the world’s largest radio telescope , China invests in the hunt for aliens which they do believe in their existence all this while. Located in southern part of China’s Guizhou with thousands triangular panels installed to be the world’s largest single-aperture radio telescope. This will boost the search for extra-terrestrial life, dark matter and others as well.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article .
It is so interesting, to hear that China’s is increasing its abilities to scan things that comes from outside our planet.
Its so interesting that China’s is now taking the lead to check out what is out there, coming in.

This video is China sending its official to say there are aliens. As other more advanced nations, it seems they only want the alien techware and technology to themselves, will China lead the way in the bringing the world to recognise the existence of aliens.

Actually if aliens do exist, it can change many people’s minds about certain religious faiths that there is one planet, and one GOD and expand and broaden their minds.
And to feel that the universe is not just this ball of earth that we are in, it is much bigger than this.
As part of China’s growing commitment to space exploration, the FAST telescope will help to explore space and assists in the hunt for extraterrestrial life. The construction of this massive telescope is not without controversy. In order to protect the telescope from radio interferences, and ensure that there was no magnetic disruption nearby, nearly 9,000 people were relocated and rehoused in neighboring countries.
In Buddhism, we are not the only beings on this planet or the universe. There are six realms of existence in samsara and it would be interesting to see whether the telescope can detect signs of aliens or other beings.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this interesting article.
China do believe Aliens exist after all, that’s why they are building the world largest radio telescope to prove it. They will prove that we are not alone in this universal.China is so advance and having new technology, they will able to discover more if extraterrestrial civilisations ….do exist and maybe communicate with them.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this article.
China is really keeping itself up to date and entering into new fields such as the search for aliens. I am really mindblown at the size of this telescope and I’m sure that once it goes into operation, it’s findings will surprise more people.
Just like a lot of people around the world, I am interested to see if aliens actually do exist. If their findings are a success and proof is found that aliens exist it would be a groundbreaking discovery that would also put an end to a long-unanswered question on the existence of aliens.
Oh China is definitely going to find Aliens’ alright but the question is not so much oh WOW they are building this huge gigantic telescope to see if Alien’s exist… all that billions of yuen is because they DEFINITELY do exist hence the calculative Chinese is building this so they can USE IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. The question is to what advantage? SO after they have zero in and spotted the Alien… what is next? What will China do next is what I am curios to know. With the capabilities, technology, money and expertise… what will China do with the Alien proven information or connection? Because we all know it is not just to find out if they exist, cos that has already been established long time ago, before this new budget to build this giant telescope was approved by the government.
I guess if we can communicate with Alien’s and find out more advancement of things that could help improve our world? Perhaps save lives? Or will we discover our world shall soon be targeted as the next planet for new inhabitants? Are we inviting unnecessary trouble? Just why are these beings coming into our atmosphere and checking our planet out is what I wanna know? Are they trying to gain some of our resources, if so what? Why? Hopefully this giant telescope can help us discover more answers about them and why are they visiting us!
China joined the space age many years back with their crewed program on-board Shenzhou 5 in 2003. Now with this giant of a radio telescope, they may yet make it to the forefront in a very short decade and a half.
In Buddhism, there are the six realms and sentient beings in the thousand worlds. Would be very interesting to see if signs of life or aliens will be detected and what it will mean for us. Will they find Yeti after all? Will they prove that there we are not alone on earth? Or will this radio telescope still not be big enough to detect extra-terrestrials?
China being the world’s largest economy will continue to be at the forefront of major industries. China has the funds and manpower to do whatever she wants. The transition has begun for the world to follow China. More people are starting to learn Chinese, learn about her culture, do business with the Chinese, eat more Chinese food and buy more Chinese products. It’s just like how American culture was adopted around the world with Coca Cola, McDonalds, English language, music and so on because USA used to be the world’s largest economy.
For China to build such a huge telescope to hunt for aliens, they must have credible proof that aliens exist and they want to be the first to communicate with them and learn new technology from them in order to be ahead of the rest of the world.
Fantastic! I am sure this will pick up something for sure!
I have always believed in extraterrestrial beings. More specifically, aliens from outer space. There has to be other living being out there. How can it just be us? There are so many more planets and so many more solar systems. It would be strange and unlikely that the human race is alone.
I think that this radio telescope will make a drastic change in the discovery of alien life. I mean, look at the size of it. 30 football pitches!! That is HUGE. It is bound to pick up some kind of foreign signal. And surely more people will start believing that Aliens to indeed exist. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche. A very interesting read indeed.
The size of 30 football pitches, China’s 500 meter Apecture-spherical telescope(Fast), was officially completed this week – The largest Radio Telescope in the World; oh yes, for listening out for Aliens. As said, it will assist and enable more detailed search for natural radio wave emission from planets orbiting other stars and help in search for radio signals from extra-terrestrial civilizations. Observation is said to be commencing in September, after completion of a thorough testing on the “Fast”. Apart from China’s above feat, in another report, Europe and Russia were said sometime in March that they’re set to launch an unmanned spacecraft to smell Mar’s atmosphere for gassy evidence that life once existed on the Red Planets, or may do so still. It was said that, “with its suite of high-tech instruments, the ‘Trace Gas Obiter’ (TGO), should arrive at the Red Planet on 19th Oct., after a journey of 496 million Km. Its main mission is to photograph the Red Planet and analyse its air, the TGO will piggy-back a Mars Lander dubbed Schiaparelli, which is a “Demonstrator” module to test heatshields and parachutes for a Rover landing on Mars, which is said to be feat that “remains a significant Challenge”. Nevertheless, ‘TGO’ will be a big Nose in Space.
At some point, we would have been drawn into conversations on the existence of extraterrestrial regardless of whether you are enchanted with the idea of other advanced form of life somewhere out there or not or just plain neutral as to whether we are alone in the universe (or not). This topic continues to spur the imagination of many but with this world’s largest radio telescope specifically to hunt for aliens, China has now taken things to another level in terms of fascination with aliens. Then again, China has always been known to push the envelope on things which they are interested in.
Mankind is taking another step into the unknown of our universe. Indoctrinated by all the sci-fi plots from the 1950s & 1960s, it is of course very thrilling to see this advancement that will enable scientist and astronomers to jump-start many researches into the depth of our universe, e.g. surveying the Milky Way and other galaxies, detecting the first shining stars, looking out for possible signals from other civilizations, etc. Rejoice for this progress.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this news.

Searching for aliens has been one of the subjects I am very fascinated with. Wow! It is so excited that someone (in this case China) is willing to spend that kind of resources to build such a HUGE telescope. This latest telescope is 500 meter wide, compared to the nearest “rival” which is 300 meter wide.
As we all know, the universe is REALLY huge, and anything is measured by “light year”. I always thought there must be some kind of portal or door which we can teleport, otherwise, how is it possible for anyone to travel such great distance? I hope this telescope is able to discover some sort of portal, or something similar.
Also, somehow, my conspiracy mind tell me that China builds this huge telescope for other purposes such as military usage. LOL.
We are not alone!!! ET, ET where are you?
China is taking the lead in joining the other super powers, the US and Russia in looking for Alien lives. Logically, we are definitely not alone in the vast universe. Only the vastness of the Universe is the barrier. The nearest star to the solar system in Alpha Centauri is 4 light years away. It means light that 4 years to arrive from Alpha Centauri. If we have a space ship that has a speed of say, 300km per sec; that is 0.1% the speed of light or 10 mil km per hour; it will take us 4000 years to arrive. This is to give a perspective of the vastness of the Universe.
