I was hesitant to have Ms. Vinnie Tan write up this article as I do not encourage anyone to contact negative beings especially with a Ouija board. Negative beings once attached to a person will come in all forms, shapes and sizes to trick us and eventually bring harm to us. Contacting supernatural beings can never be used for ‘fun’ because the consequences are not going to be fun in the end. Having said all this, I thought Vinnie’s research will be perhaps beneficial in forewarning people about this danger. There are many unseen beings that can harm us and all they need is a portal to enter our lives. Stay away.
For those who have been affected by these negative beings, I recommend either of these two methods (Singdongma & Dorje Shugden) to remove them. You don’t have to be Buddhist to engage in these powerful methods from Tibet for protection, dispelling negative supernatural beings and gaining control of our lives again. I wish you well.
Tsem Rinpoche
Dear friends all over the world,
Since young, I have heard of Ouija boards, both those that are commercially sold and those that are self-made. I have also heard about the different horror stories in which people are physically attacked by objects that fly across the room, those that cannot lift their fingers from the Ouija planchette and end up dislocating their arms, getting possessed, bad things happening to their loved ones, and so on. There are many stories in which people use a Ouija board with horrific consequences that have been experienced by my friends or friends of theirs.
Ouija boards have many different names as they are used in different cultures. They are also known as the Spirit Board, Talking Board, Fuji (扶乩), Charmed Spirit Board, Psychic Circle, or in my own Chinese culture, Diexian (碟仙) and so on.
Personally, I have witnessed a session that has gone wrong. It happened when one of my friends was not able to pull his arm off the coin we were using as a planchette. His arm began twisting uncontrollably and he was not able to fight the ‘force’ of the spirit we were talking to.
While I was reading more on Ouija boards, I came across an entity that is called ‘Zozo’. It is said that Zozo is a demon that comes through the board when participants use the board to contact the underworld.
Please bear in mind that this is just a sharing of my thoughts and research on the entity. Do NOT engage in using Ouija boards as it is very dangerous when we do not know who we are communicating with and at times these beings will stay with us. The Ouija board is a portal through which we can create a negative karmic link with these beings that may cause us harm. Thus, we are in a very risky and dangerous position when we engage in these activities, as the chances of being affected negatively are very high. The beings contacted through the Ouija boards usually appear kind and helpful, but once there is a strong connection, we will never be able to get rid of them. Even if we are able to move the planchette to the word ‘goodbye’ on the board in an attempt to end the session, it does not necessarily mean that the being has left. They can still linger around us as we have already created that link to them.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank Pastor Niral for helping me with the editing and uploading of the article and Pastor Jean Ai for her help with the videos.
Ouija boards have been around for hundreds of years. It is one of the ways that people contact the ‘other side’ or the spirit world. These unseen entities that are being contacted, may be good or bad. We will never know who we are calling forth when we use portals like this.
In short, a Ouija board is a flat board marked with the 26 letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0 to 9, the words ‘yes’, ‘no’, ‘hello’ (occasionally) and ‘goodbye’. It uses a small heart-shaped piece of wood or plastic called a planchette, or in Asia a small dish or coin. The participants will then place their fingers on the planchette lightly and begin asking questions. When the beings of the other world are successfully engaged, the planchette will start to move on its own accord. It is important that when using the Ouija board, to never lift the fingers off the planchette until it is moved to the word ‘goodbye’ and the beings are bade farewell.
A very common entity that people reach out to when they use Ouija boards is the entity known as Zozo. In recent years this entity is also known Oz, Zaza or Mama. This entity is well known for creating the infinity figure and a rapid rainbow effect when controlling the planchette that moves from Z to O to Z to O repetitively.
There are many investigations and documentaries that are about Zozo, this entity that comes through the Ouija board. There are sources that call this the Zozo Phenomenon (see the video at the end of this article for an explanation). Amongst all those who investigate Ouija board phenomena, there is a particular investigator called Darren Evans who labels himself a zozologist, as he knows a lot about Zozo and has had many experiences with it. Darren has made a movie about Zozo and when he carried out his research, he felt that he was constantly being watched. There was once that he even caught footage, in which he suspects that Zozo appeared to him as a raven watching him. In the video (attached below) it shows that the raven disappeared all of a sudden when it flew off the tree. I do not know if this really is Zozo manifesting as a raven, but there is a possibility that this happened.

It is said that when you engage with the entity called Zozo, every time you use the Ouija board in the future, even different boards, you will always end up contacting Zozo again. Similarly, if a board has been used to call forth Zozo, the next time when it is used, even by a completely different group of people, they will still contact Zozo. If participants that have contacted Zozo in the past use the Ouija board again, they can only contact Zozo. Once you have experienced ‘speaking’ with Zozo, Zozo does not allow other beings to communicate with the participants. Through this, it shows that Zozo actually creates a link with the person using the Ouija board as a portal and is extremely possessive.
This just goes to show, we should not deal with such practices as we never know who or what we are contacting. With that thought in mind, there are chances that the being that we have contacted is not who we want to contact, as other beings can pose as the people that we wish to speak to, for example loved ones that we have lost. In addition, since some of these beings have the ability to read our minds, they can give us the answers that we are looking for.
In the video below, it shows an example of how the being that is being contacted poses as the dead grandfather of the girl, answering whatever questions she had as if it was really her grandfather. However, when she was blindfolded, it is very obvious that the being had trouble reading her mind and thus was not able to answer the questions but ended up pointing to blank spaces.

One thing that Zozo will not accept is when participants laugh at its name and call it Bozo instead, making jokes about its name. There are many sources that state when this happens, one of the participants would become possessed by the entity and speak in a deep demonic voice. Alternatively some participants end up getting lost, never to be found again.
According to researchers that have encountered Zozo before, they say that the entity will act innocent and gain the pity or trust of the participants. Once the trust or empathy is achieved, this is when things would start turning ugly. It turns ugly because Zozo starts to make deals with participants. These deals are usually very harmful. In some of the experiments, they asked why Zozo wanted to give them a deal and the reply that was always spelled out was ‘L-O-V-E’. Zozo wanted love from the participants thus giving them a deal.
This is interesting, as why does an entity that is able to create so much chaos try to demand for love when it is obvious that anything that is done using that method only causes fear to these participants? With the fear that is being created, the answer of ‘love’ that is given in return for the deal does not hold up at all. Hence, what I choose to believe is that it is only saying that as a pretense of a soft persona to gain trust and empathy. It is through this trust and empathy that Zozo is able to make deals, taking the participant’s soul or the souls of their loved ones.
During one of the encounters that Darren Evans had with Zozo, Zozo claimed that it was going to devour his daughter’s soul and strike her with an ‘iron tongue’. The day after the warning, Evan’s three year-old daughter nearly drowned in the bath tub and was later diagnosed with MRSA. She was then hospitalised and kept in quarantine for two weeks, her swollen tongue hanging grotesquely from her mouth. Even though the child survived, this reflects that Zozo is not an entity to be toyed with.
Many times when Zozo takes possession of a person, it is usually of a female. There have been many cases in which female participants of the group would be possessed or go missing. In one of the videos by Ghost Adventures (see the end of the article for the video) the group participated in the Ouija board session with Darren Evans, whose girlfriend went missing during part of the recording and came back with her belt undone and she herself did not even realize that she had left.
In other videos and accounts, many state that Zozo will ask for sex, and when being asked what it eats, will reply ‘semen’. Using what I have learnt in Buddhism, beings that enters us from our lower body parts and are attracted to our lower body parts are the more negative beings. Thus, it once again gives us another concrete reason why we should not engage in activities like this.
When beings like this take possession of us, to have them expelled out of our bodies takes a lot of purification and supernatural help from the Buddhas and Dharma protectors. However, beings like Zozo will make it difficult for us to do these practices as they will lose the ‘host’ body that they have taken over.
This is the reason, when some people are afflicted by spirit disturbances and are asked to engage in certain mantras or pujas, they find it difficult to do so. When the ‘host’ engages in these mantras and pujas, they will face more disturbances compared to before until the affliction is lifted, as the being attached will try even harder to afflict the practitioner in a last ditch attempt to maintain its grip on the ‘host’ by dissuading them from the practice of mantras and pujas. Thus, it is very important that we carry through and persevere with the practice that has being prescribed to us even though we may encounter many disturbances that we do not wish to face.
We can argue that we are able to bid farewell to these being that we encounter through the Ouija board itself, yet this is not necessarily the case. There have been many instances in which although the planchette moves to the word ‘goodbye’, the entity still lingers around the participant. Many that have come in contact with the entity Zozo have reported seeing black shadow figures around them and in their homes. Apart from the shadow figures, they will also encounter things being moved around in their house, sounds coming from other rooms although they are alone at home, strange dreams, discovering wounds in places that they do not recall hurting, or even to experience their pets barking and staring at blank spaces with a look of fear.
In my opinion, I do not encourage anyone to participate in any form of Ouija board in order to speak to beings from the spirit world, as we never know who we are inviting. It is also that there are chances that we can harm ourselves and our loved ones through the use of Ouija boards.
I hope that you have learned something from this article, as I enjoyed writing this knowing that people are more informed of the dangers of using Ouija boards and can avoid contacting and making negative connections with spirits. The Ouija board is indeed something that is fascinating, yet highly dangerous. I request that none of you engage in this as the ‘forces’ that can be released from the board, will not be recognisable as negative until it is too late.

Hi there. It’s been quite some time since I last used my Ouija board. But the last two experiences I was met with Zozo himself. The last one before I stored the board away was a weird one. I actually used my hand on the board itself instead of a planchette, leaving behind a stiff feeling. He spelled his name out repeatedly in a fast pace. Ever since that happen, I hurriedly said goodbye and haven’t used the board since. But for some reason I’ve been thinking about him today so I’ve been doing some research. Is it because my connection to him through the board is still there and he won’t let go?
HI MI😀
what if we came in contact with this demon. is there anything we can do to escape, pls someone reply:(
Hi Nishta,

Thank you for sharing this article it has a very good teaching for youngster. Most teenagers would like play with spirits especially when it is just a game without knowing the effect. I too have experience playing such games in my school days.
The game that I played was Spirits of the Coin. Very interesting game to play and simple to setup. We usually set a team and a leader to play this game. Often played in school classroom, during final school holidays. We take turn to play and even by routine and enjoyed calling spirits and talking to them. I never had any bad experience but had witness seeing people playing this games for hours due to the spirits was not able to leave the player till they got tired, scared and started to shiver.
That was my last, we never played the games till we left school. We had so much fear and sleepless nights for some time. We promised not to teach anyone about the game and promised to do our daily prayers and meditation. Through this article I came to know many other spirits games to my knowledge which are very harmful. I will take this opportunity to share this article to my family and friends
I have not heard of these Ouija Board before which is also known as spirit boards or talking boards till I read this . The history of the Ouija seem to be very mysterious ,records did mention it was originated from China dated centuries ago . The goal of Ouija is to summon spirits which one can communicate with unseen beings for help or some sort of answers they wanted to know. Eventually Ouija has become a device that filled the public’s desire to contact with the dead. That’s not a good idea as we do not know what if it turns ugly during the process as it is very dangerous once we are connected with spirits. It is best to avoid it and not get involve with it. Thank you Rinpoche and Vinnie Tan for sharing.

As humans, we can say we have great potential amongst all the beings in the 6 realms. Even buddhism acknowledges that as well from a spiritual perspective. Our human senses for the most part is not as sensitive, or able to pick up frequencies of hearing, or have ways to perceive things that are actually ‘invisible’ to human eyes.
Some people who are very scientifically based, have to understand that scientific methods, at this time may not be able to measure or even detect some of these paranormal occurrences. There are many, new agers who open the door to contact things unseen and things, most probably want something from us, usually not to our benefit. Advice for everyone avoid, opening the door to such beings and creatures.
Since young, I have seen movies, books, or heard many stories about diexian, so this is not something new, but the only thing is we don’t know how this mechanism work.
Mostly people who uses Ouija is out of attachment or greed, when they have problems, they always wanted quick fix, they thought they invited a God to help them, to give them answer to their problems, but they don’t know actually the beings they invited over is not any celestial being, but in fact, it is a spirit, some times when they are are unlucky, they could be invited over a very evil and powerful spirit, so to help them to settle one problem, they have to face the spirit for even longer period and eventually harm our life, worse still when this harm extended to the people around us, so is this worth it?
Spirit is noway we can play around, once they hooked on us, they will haunt us until it caused our life, then they will go for the next target. Dorje Shugden is one of the best solution to resolve this issue, in my past experience, I have seen how Dorje Shugden help people solve their spirit disturbances, and in fact, before we went to this stage, instead of asking Ouija for help, we can ask Dorje Shugden to help, as he is the Buddha, he definitely know the best way to help us without create any harm to us like what the spirit do. Dorje Shugden is so far I’ve seen the most powerful Buddha we can go to when we have problem, hence, Dorje Shugden is definitely we can rely on.
Too often, a fun game turns into life changing events in the most negative way. This is all due to ignorance that leads to lack of respect for these beings. We laugh loudly, speak crassly in their presence thinking “no big deal” and offend them.
Or we don’t realise the risk and dangerous doors we are opening when we engage in spirit games without proper guidance and protection.
I hope this post will let people realise that connecting with the other realm and after life is not a game.
All unseen being such like Zozo is still in samsara, they will have anger, hatred and all others emotion, so when they are happy, they are okay but they can harm you when they are not happy. I personally have played all this before and was lucky nothing bad happened. However I have the same experience with the author that I have witnessed one of my friends was not able to pull his arm off the coin we were using as a planchette. At that time, we were playing this in a Catholic School and lastly we have to call upon the priest to come and do a prayer, it took about 2 hours for the spirit to go away. The experience was very scary.
Therefore, stay away from all this negative spirit because you don’t know who are they and they might harm you. By the way, you may learn the Dorje Shugden prayer to protect yourself from negative being and also you can help others who encounter this problem.
I played something similar to the Ouija board before when i was very young. Didn’t know much about the power of the demon. Now when i recall, I find myself very lucky that nothing happened at that time.
It is very dangerous to contact these demons as they are very powerful beings that would trick you and posses our body. Do not take the risk even though you desperately wanted to know some answers or just having fun. They are easily offended.
The powerful Sengdongma and Dorje Shugden prayers can help for those who are having problems with the demon.
Interesting article and research about Ouija board demon. In Buddhism, we are not encourage using any practice to contacting spirit or demon reason is those being are not enlighten. when you start connecting with them and asking for help, the might want something back from you. Although different culture have different way to connecting spirit Important think is ,we must realise the nature of the spirit will bring harm to us at the end of the day. Don’t simply connecting spirit for our selfish reason to fulfil our need. As the result,we are inviting spirit connecting with our life and give opportunity to them to bring harm to us later.
“Take your own risks” I will not take this unworthy risk to check whether the Ouija Board is working or not just to fulfill my curiosity.
To fulfill one’s curiosity is the main reason for an individual to conduct or involve in such activity. There are personal stories, real experiences and researches to indicate that the Ouija Board do works. Moreover, most of them do not ended with a happy ending. I wonder why people could risk their lives to fulfil their curiosity which the specific curiosity on a specific object or subject would definetely caused only harms.
Interesting article and Thank You Vinnie for sharing it, and this article remind me of Chinese culture the Die-Xian (碟仙).
There is a common Chinese Saying, (请神容易,送神难) “Easy to inviting god /spirit , but difficult to send it off”. If the player does not know how to properly send the spirits away, it can be dangerous. There are similar reports on newspapers that spirits / ghosts had possessed the Die-Xian (碟仙) Players during the game of Die-Xian (碟仙).
The Zozo board as a tool to get answers or to connect to the spirit world should not be used lightly. I personally have never heard about the Zozo board before this article. But now that I am so fortunate to have learned about the spirit world, I will not go any close to a Ouija board or similar.
We should be very careful with any spirit and only rely on an enlightened being such as the protector Dorje Shugden or other protectors and Buddhas. They will never harm us.
I have experience with playing with something similiar to Ouija Board when I was young out of curiosity. Some people thought that the phenomenon of Ouija Board is a kind of ideomotor reflex. Whatever it is, it seems that there are a lot of example of negative consequences after engaging in Ouija Board. So whether you believe it or not? It is best to avoid it as what Vinnie suggested.
Personally i feel that contacting negative beings from another world is dangerous. We have no idea who we are calling and the most importantly is why we want to call them? Some people may treat this as a game and some may seek for helps but for me it’s dangerous as this is not something we do for fun and they are not enlightened beings and would not able to help us in long term.
It’s important for us to know that we should only seek help or refuge from the enlightened being as they are liberated from all form of attachment and delusion and operating based on compassion. With this quality we are safe to seek help and also do their practice.
Some of us had experienced dabbling with ouija board before or knew people who had played with it. Most children played with it for fun not realising the potential harm that may arise from it. It is best that people should not try to contact or connect with paranormal entities for fun or talk to the deceased they knew. I do not see any benefit in doing so, except having negative experiences. Just let these entities remain in their realms of existence and not call them forth. Let sleeping dogs lie.
When I was young, I remembered playing something like Diexian (碟仙) with my friends. While we were playing, I didn’t feel anything different or uncomfortable coz I don’t believe that it was real. I keep having the feeling that my friends were pushing the coin to whatever answer they wanted. Haha..
After reading this article, I don’t think I ever want to touch an ouija board. It was already scary enough just reading the harm that can be done/cause playing it. However fun one think that it might be, please do not dabble in it. Imagine getting involved and something bad really happens, it will be too late for help or anything. Even people like Darren Evans, who is said to know so much of Zozo, had problem when dealing with him. This goes to show that whatever entity it is, they have ill intention and they will do what they can to get what they want.
Ouija has a very long history and in my opinion is actually one of the most commonly “played” method used to contact another realm. It’s popular both in the East and in the West. When I was young I used to play them too with friends just for fun. Now it reminds me of The Conjuring 2.
The article is very educational because spritis are very real and ignorance will not be your saving grace when whatever entities come through that portal.
I have never heard of Zozo. I wonder what is the origin of Zozo and how it come about that this spirit/demon is particularly attached to Ouija board or preferred Ouija board as a portal.

I am the researcher mentioned in your article. I have released a book called The Zozo Phenomenon which is the first official examination into this perplexing set of circumstances. For the first time I reveal the untold historic mentioning of this term being directly connected to the dinIng realm. I also share dozens of creepy encounters and cases I have documented.
The book is available at zozophenomenon.com

Hello Vinnie, thank you for researching and compiling all this information on the Zozo entity.
I had a lot of fun reading your article on the Zozo spirit. Prior to reading this post, I did not know that such an entity existed and is apparently very commonly called upon by people who use the ouija board. I always thought that the spirits that are called upon by the Ouija board are normal spirits who come, answer questions and go.
After reading this article and watching the video on the investigation of a house haunted by Zozo, it gives me goosebumps thinking about the consequences people experience when they call upon Zozo.
Zozo is an extremely possessive spirit and not one to be taken lightly. The cases of what happened to people after calling upon Zozo is really scary to think off. This is just another good reason why we should not simply play with Ouija boards as the consequences can be very bad and may even lead to death.
Thank you Vinnie once again for writing this wonderful article, it was certainly a good read!
Hi Vinnie,
Thanks for doing the research and writing the article on Ouija Board. It was very popular when I was in high school and I played it once or twice too. I am consider lucky as nothing happen. But my friend told me that she felt some being monitoring her in the house after playing it.
I hope more people will learn about this and do NOT attempt to play it. This is a very scary and dangerous game.
The Ouija Board.
I think most of us would have heard about it or play with it at one time of their life.
I had at one time played with this with a few of my friends before and I must say that we were lucky nothing happened to any of us. I remembered everyone accusing each other on pushing the coin and answering the questions. None of us admitted it was our doing and I’m happy it went ‘home’ when we asked it to. Till this day I’m not sure if we did it correctly or if we are just plain lucky.
After reading this sharing I think it’s best not to challenge the unknown cos you never know whom you’re inviting and if they are going to leave you alone.
Be careful what you wish for…..
Jill Yam
Dear Vinnie,
Wonderful and well-researched article.
This article is truly beneficial for those who haven’t heard of ouija or spirit boards and can know the harmful and latent effect should they engage in such activities.
When i was in my secondary school days.. I often heard of other class school mates dabbling with spirits and demons through coins or the “diexian”.. or commonly.. ouija board..
Each time I heard about them playing with spirits.. I will hear gruesome cries and screams from “possessions”. Once, 1 guy even tried jumping off from the 4th storey of our school. Really very scary then…
Because of all those incidents, I knew very clearly i had to stay away from those school mates and from dabbling with such activities.
Especially those who are very sensitive to other realms, or with acute 6th sense… engaging spirits or demons are definitely something we should stay away from.
Thank you Vinnie for such a well thought out article.
Dear Vinnie,
Thank you for sharing this interesting post about the Ouija Board. I never heard about it before and I am quite happy that I didn’t. We are lucky when we get information about how dangerous such games can be before we get in touch with them.
Blindly playing such games is very dangerous and will affect our life negatively for sure. This is why we should use all our force to do good things and learn the Dharma. Tibetan Buddhism has powerful practices to help those who have been affected and even better gives us the knowledge to stay away from such evil energies.
The Paranormal blog has many interesting topics which will give us more knowledge about other dimensions and how to stay safe.
Thank You Rinpoche for creating this blog and the paranormal blog and sharing so much precious information so that we know and stay safe.
Humbly,
P. Antoinette
Dear Vinnie
Thank you for this informative article. I remembered that when I was in high school ouija board was very popular. My friends liked to consult the board usually for a matter of relationship. One of my friends was so addicted to ouija board and the prediction that came out when she played it was pretty accurate.
However, she passed away at 15 due to heart problems. Before she passed, she was screaming for help. I could not sleep soundly for days when I heard about this, and I have always wonder as to whether her passing was the effect of ouija board?
Valentina
Thanks for sharing this article as all demonic boards such as charlie charlie pencil board ,I`ve seen people playing all this demonic games . The raven might be the spirit zozo or some other ghost or demon. I hope i might be able to sleep tonight
Ah!This gives me the creeps because I am a chicken. I am not used scary stuff but thank you for the post Rinpoche for telling us not to toy around with Oujia Boards.
Thank you, Vinnie, for this informative piece on Zozo and the Qujia board. When I was between 11-13, it was something “in” to explore the spirit world with coin, pen etc. I was too afraid to play with the 碟仙. Somehow the 碟仙 sounded more powerful than the coin or pen spirit. Talk about being ignorant :p
In the Buddhist cosmology, spirit, demon etc. are part of the six realms of existence, they have same negative emotions like us – anger, desire, greed, jealousy etc., some of them are very mean and harmful which we do not want to connect with. Connecting with a spirit normally resulted in harm for us and our loved ones. They have clairvoyance so they can easily manipulate us by fueling our negative thoughts they are too familiar with. There are good spirits, but I don’t think we want to risk it.
Our curiosity of the unknown world should be pacified by learning useful and correct knowledge that will help us in understanding what is around us. Our curiosity shouldn’t be lead to harm.
This is a very interesting article. Supernatural stories and occurrences have always drew my attention ever since I was young.
When I was younger, I used to hangout a lot in my neighbor’s house, and the aunty would tell me stories about the supernatural, and how she used to play the Ouija board. She said there was once, her friends and her almost got into big trouble with a spirit that they called. Ever since that incident, she never dabbled with the Ouiji board again.
As a kid, listening to stories like these didn’t really scare me, but instead it piqued my interest in the supernatural. Several times I wanted to try it out, but I never got around to it lol. It’s funny that as a kid, I was more fearless, we would think we become more brave as we get older, but what I noticed was we get more afraid… perhaps because we get more attached to things as the years pass.
But spirits are certainly not something that we should play around with. Some people would contact spirits to get some ‘advice’ since there are spirits that are clairvoyant. But they never think about the ‘price’ they have to pay, many times in a very bad way.
Just like what Vinnie said, best to stay clear of these beings, and not use them for our own selfish desires… Seeing how much suffering these beings have to go through, instead of wasting our time playing the Ouiji board, we might as well take our mala and recite some mantras for the benefit of all sentient beings.
Dear Vinnie
Thank you for sharing this eerily interesting subject of the Ouija Board.I am too much of a scaredy-cat to even ever consider dabbling in this sort of matter, but I will definitely want to share this story with my kids and also to share on social media to alert others the potential negative repercussions.
Bradley mentioned these boards are sold in large toy store chains !! That’s terrible ! So accessible to ignorant people ! If these spirits are the malicious/angersome/attached type it will be hard to wean them off. Most people would not know the methods to help these beings or in fact most people don’t know that these beings are suffering too and need “help” and blessings. As most of us have no real means/methods to help them at this point in our practice, we should not dabble in them and advice others not to engage with them too.
I have always had a huge interest in paranormal subjects especially about spirits. This is a very interesting and informative article I must say, very well researched and written. Upon reading it, it’s crystal clear that Zozo is an extremely malevolent spirit/ demon, his intention is to hurt others. It’s very important not to engage in activities like this that attract spirits or require them to come forth and make further contacts.
Ouija boards are indeed very dangerous because we are dealing with the spirit realm here, we do not know what is on the other side and we have no idea who and what we are dealing with. It’s very easy to ask them to come forth but sending them back is another thing. At times when we are unlucky, we actually create the portal for them to enter and once there’s a connection, it’s very hard to send them back to where they came from.
I remember when I was 12 years old, there was once where a group of my friends including myself, we gathered at a corner in school and we started playing the spirit game, it was the coin game back then. My school is built next to a cemetery and as a kid, without understanding the consequences, we were always curious about new things and basically we just wanted to try everything out. Just as we started the game less than 5-8 mins later, my principle walked by and caught us playing the spirit game. I remember he was extremely furious and actually canned all of us. It was a very good lesson, I never played any spirit games anymore since then. It’s very potent to not take this very lightly because actions like this comes with huge consequences.
Dear Vinnie,
Thank you for this article. It is very interesting. From young , I had heard stories about this game to connect with the supernatural beings. We are warned not to get involve because it is very dangerous and the beings might harmed us. However, out of curiosity many had tried it and depended on their luck, some had bad experiences and some experience nothing. Now that I am in Buddhism and learnt about the six realms and the nature of these beings, I understand how dangerous it is.
I enjoyed the article very much.
Chris
Hi Chris,
Indeed when we are being warned that we should not do something, we will still test our luck and continue with it anyway as a thrill. I am glad that after knowing more about Buddhism you know the danger of these beings.
I hope that more people will know that these beings are dangerous and never try to make any contact with them as what will happen next we will never know. And since these beings are able to read our minds, they will always be able to out smart us no matter what as they know what we are thinking about.
Thank you
Vinnie
Thank you Vinnie and Rinpoche for sharing about the Ouija Board.
A very interesting educational piece for me. I still remember when I was in primary school, I did play the DieXian with my friends. At that time I was the one who did not believe in any supernatural being or spirit. I kept accusing my friend why they moved the coin and scared others people among the group. Out of the curiosity, I started to read the stories about ghost and watched documentaries about the supernatural events around us.
Since then, I started get scared or dark and fear of the beings or spirits or ghost. However, I still feel curious about the underworld.?
Thank you Vinnie for the research, I am going to read more about this in the future.
Hi Jesvin,
The curiosity that we have for the underworld will always be there. However, that is definitely not the reason for us to seek fun in things like that as we will only start something that we do not want. When we do that, we are only finding ways to hurt ourselves and the ones that we love. So there is no reason for us to be actively seeking danger like that.
Since we are not able to see them and we know that they have the capabilities to do negative things, why take the risk? With all the things that are happening around us,we are already in constant danger of being harm in a way or another. Thus, we should never actively seek things like that as it will only do more harm than good.
Thank you
Vinnie
Many people out of curiosity like to play and dabble with spirits through such games. I remembered when I was a child I use to play with “Spirit of the coin” as well and I stopped because someone told us to not play with such things as they can end up following you. So we stopped.
It can get addictive because you think you have someone who can tell you the future, or so you think. There was once I played this Spirit of the coin game with my friend and the spirit will not go home until my friend’s mother knocked on the door and then it only went ‘home’. I guess it is our human nature of being ignorant and curious of the unknown which causes us to get into trouble always.
Thank you Vinnie for this interesting post of Zozo… it is very scary to read and to be honest games like Quija Boards should never be created as it just encourages and allows negative spirits like Zozo to come through. I hope this post will educate people so that people will know the dangers of dabbling with the formless and stop getting themselves into trouble due to their curiosity. It is not fun nor funny once the spirit starts attaching itself to you and start doing things to harm and hurt you, so why open the doors to such danger?
Very true, as humans we open portals like this unknowingly out of our curiosity. It is dangerous as we form connections with them that will only get stronger over time. When the connection is very strong, it is then that things will start going downhill as the entities that we have made connections with may ask us to do things that benefits them but harming others in the process.
I am glad to hear thatyou got some advices and stopped engaging in things like this.
I have always been a big fan of mysteries ranging from Bigfoot, Loch Ness and Fairies, all the way to spirits. Ever since when I was young, I had always been a chicken (one who is easily terrified) in my case was spirits. I would love to watch horror movies and be scared literally for months, but I would still continue to watch them.
I definitely believes that this entity is real. When I first read this blog article yesterday night, in just less than 5 minutes into this article, I could feel chills down behind my back. I was so terrified that I just wanted to stop reading it and go to sleep without even thinking of what to write as my comment. I tried quite a while just to go to sleep, my mind would just kept on saying the entity’s name. So I switched my mind to thinking about Dorje Shugden. I prayed to Dorje Shugden telling Him to please watch over me and protect me from any harm physical or mentally. And very soon after visualizing this, I fell into my sleep. I was lucky to not have any sort of traumatizing nightmares.
I have been watching documentaries about spirits especially made by the Ghost Adventures team for at least 4 years now and I can tell you that this is by far the scariest documentary I have ever watched. This video seems very terrifying to me is because when I watch it, I can feel very strong chilly feelings all around me. It gives me the feeling that this entity wants to control and manipulate people and definitely has the power to. Thank you Vinnie for sharing this article, now I know about this, I can share to people whoever tries to play with the Ouija board.
Edward, thank you for sharing your experience of how Dorje Shugden has protected you. It is true that just by the thought of the entity, we can call forth the entity towards us. It is scary in this way as entities like Zozo travel at the speed of thought. When our minds are in a negative state, it will make these beings latch onto us. Thus, by staying positive and not dwelling in anger is very important.
This entity is definitely is some being that is very active and has danger when we come across it. It is not safe for us to engage in these beings in any ways or portals. It is easy to invite them here, but, it is difficult to send them away.
Been always fascinated with paranormal phenomenon such as spirits, black magic, etc. Although I have heard of Ouija Board and was utterly curious about it, I never had the opportunity to play it. After reading this post and watching the vids, I am glad I didn’t dabble in something dangerous like this. This post has further strengthened the fact that we should not engage with spirits although they may initially seem harmless or even helpful.
Thank you for this interesting read!
I am so glad for you Sharon. It is just great to hear that you have not tried things like the Ouija Board. It may sound like it is all fun and laughter for the moment, yet when we look into it in a deeper level, it just spells nothing but trouble.
Like humans, there are spirits that are good and there are spirits that do not mean well. What they hope to achieve is chaos and trouble. Thus, when we engage them, we will never know their true colours. This is for a very simple reason. It is because that we will never know what they really want till it is too late.
Thus, the best way, is to not engage them at all from the start. Even if they are the ones that have came to us, we can deny that connection. We should never look at short term ways that they may help us with. Instead to look at the long term effect where the kind of damage that they are capable of.
Thanks Rinpoche and Vinnie for the article. It brings back my memory of playing oujia board in Chinese way when I was much younger.
Out of curiosity, my sister and I were trying to use a pen as the planchette to connect to the underworld. Personally I can confirm that there was a force moving the pen, as my sister was holding the top of the pen, shaking in fear, I could feel the force is very strong as the pen moved from the tip of the pen.
I can still remember the spirit from the other world told us that he was a boy and passed away in a car accident on his birthday; we took a long time to tell him to leave as he said he was very boring and wanted us to play with him. My sister was crying in fear but in the end he left the board after drawing many circles.
The Zozo seems real after reading the post and watching the videos. From a tv production point of view, the videos do exaggerate the phenomena but Zozo does exist.
I always wonder why there are a lot of people exploring the paranormal out of curiosity but didn’t prepare for the consequences. Some of them just want to have some fun but always regretted it when there were bad consequences due to unable to handle it well.
I was part of the production team for The Paranormal Zone TV series, which is a reality documentary hosted by Likim. Whenever we go to “haunted places” or investigating some paranormal cases, I always remember what Rinpoche teaches us, to be kind and respect the unseen.
During the shoot, we bring powerful protection items such as Ruels, Dorje Shugden blessed string with us, and sometimes we eat the protector rice that blessed by Dorje Shugden whenever we sense there are danger. For me, beside these great protection, the other strong shield is from our compassion to them. They are in great sufferings too, we should not harm them further but educate more people to be kind to the unseen.
Again I would like to thank this informative article about Zozo, by understanding more I wish people don’t make fun of the unseen, respect them and do not involve with them without protection.
Thank you.
Thank you for your sharing Jace, it indeed shows that the entity of Zozo is real. I do not believe that what was being shot in the series of Ghost Adventures is fake. However, with your sharing from a production view, I am glad to hear that this is not being tempted with.
I do believe that during the search and filming of The Paranormal Zone the team has also encountered things that are not being able to be explained.
Yes, like you have mentioned, I hope that no one does make fun of these entities as they are after all entities that are not enlightened and they have anger as well. When their anger arises, we never know what will happen as they will be able to harm us in ways that we never know.
Thanks Vinnie for taking time to reply most of the comments here 🙂
Many paranormal program productions do “use” or make fun of the unseen entities to make stories for good rating. I did read about news that unfortunate accidents happen during paranormal program shoot, some even lose their life. This is really no joke that we always have to respect the unseen and do not take them as joke.
For me, they have already suffered from trapping in the situation and no where to be liberated for decades, we should help them by planting Dharma seeds than use them for fun.
Thank you Vinnie again 🙂
Thanks Vinnie for sharing this article.
I’ve never had any wish to dabble in the occult in any shape or form and always wondered why anyone would, whether seriously or for fun. Ghosts and the paranormal are a favourite topic, people are always interested to know.
Maybe it’s the scare factor – people are bored and want some kicks like going for a horror movie or an excursion to a haunted house. Maybe people try it out of ignorance or curiosity or the assumption that they’d be in total control, nothing will go wrong, they can call the shots and can decide to want in or out anytime and everytime. It sounds similar to people’s justifications to dabble in drugs.
But there are so many unknowns. What’s on the other side, what are we opening up ourselves to? What benefit do we get? On the contrary, what harm are we exposing ourselves to?
Some things we’re better of not knowing for now. Leave it until we become enlightened, then we don’t need to be curious of what’s on the other side as we’d be all seeing, and we don’t need to worry about who’s in control as we’d be in total control, there would be nothing to fear as we’d be fearless, we don’t need to worry if they would harm us as we cannot be harmed and because we are all compassionate. Until then, I acknowledge they are there; they stay away, I stay away; let’s not cross paths on purpose; meanwhile let me use my time and choose to do positive things that can benefit myself and others rather than negative things that do not bring benefit but a greater likelihood of harm.
ECheah I totally agree with you. there is no benefits for us to be dabbling in matters like that. Simple reason, when we do things like that there is no benefits to us, the only way that it will benefit us is that we get to reach out to this being that we do not know who they are. From there, we will only be causing more problems for ourselves.
These beings are malevolent. They can and will act like one of our relatives that might have passed aways so that we will think that the being that we have contacted is our loved ones but in fact it is an entity that is vicious and has only contacted us for a very wrong reason.
Through engagement in matters like that, we are only opening ourselves to something that is very bad and something that will harm us.
I admit long ago when I was younger, My friends and Family use to use a Ouija Board for fun. Just once in a blue moon. We even had a home made one. Nothing unsual happened to me and my family, though my friend’s place became haunted for a few days after one session till he got rid of the board. Something none of us will ever mess with again. It’s funny thing though, you can buy these boards in a toy shop like Toy’s R’US when you’re 10+, yet you need to wait till age 16 to get a drivers licence lol. Anyway something I will avoid, and glad nothing became as bad as the what the people above in the article experienced.
Hi Bradley,
Thank you so much for your comment and sharing if your experiences of the Ouija board with us. I am really glad and thankful that nothing happened to your family, friends nor yourself. It is just a relief to know that when the board was gotten rid of, the disturbances stopped.
Through that experience, it shows clearly how these beings use the Ouija board as a portal to be connected with us.
In Singapore and Malaysia, I have not seen Ouija boards being sold in toy stores. But I have heard that you are able to get these boards very easily in the Western countries. You said it right, it is indeed scary how these boards can be used by children that are 10 that are not old enough to drive. Driving is much more safe compared to using an Ouija board.
Thank you
Vinnie
Thank you Vinnie for this informative article about Zozo and the Ouija board. There is the existence of spirits and it is better not to create the connection with them like via Quija or tarot card, opening up for chakra to be in contact with them or seeking advice via trances of “deities” that we are not sure who is actually being called on and come.
They are unenlightened and they still have anger, jealousy and attachment. It is best we keep a distance from them rather than creating connection with them as some of them maybe harmful.
Thank you Vinnie for detailed write up on Zozo as serve as an warning to all of us, especially some who like to play Ouija board.
Thank you Wei Theng for your comment. What you have said it is very true. The scariest of all parts is that since to creat a board is so easy, the chances of people being in contact with these beings are even higher.
I have also heard from many of my friends especially in Malaysia how they would play with ouija boards or variations of it during their free time that makes me more fearful and worried for them. Since most of us do not know anything about these beings, it is very easy for us to be affected or manipulated by them.
Vinnie,
Thank you for this interesting article about Zozo. People should take heed of your advice and be cautious when communicating with spirits. Spirits are sentient beings who have reincarnated in that realm and are not enlightened. Since they are not enlightened, they have their likes and dislikes, and preferences. They can be offended and angered, in the same way they can be pleased.
The fact they can be swayed in this manner however, shows that they are not enlightened. Truly enlightened beings will not be moved by bribes or sweet words, nor will they be offended when you do something that might otherwise upset an ordinary being. This is because they are without the sense of ‘I’ that can be manipulated in this way.
So although spirits may appear to benevolent, kind, generous at the beginning, in actual fact their generosity is not to be trusted because it can change at any time.
What I would like to ask for people to consider is why seek assistance from an unenlightened being when it puts you at risk of being harmed? Some people do it because they do not know any better so blogs like Rinpoche’s are important. They help to make Dharma accessible to people who might otherwise dabble in the dark arts for the answer to their questions.
But things like ouija boards and the like are manifestations of people’s impatience to get answers. The fact they are impatient though is the reason why they are in trouble in the first place. Without this change in attitude and impatience, their problems will manifest again and again and again. Ouija boards do not address the root of the problem (our attitude and our karma) so whatever answers are gotten will only be temporary solutions, with the potential to lead to much more problems.
Nope, I think it’s much safer to seek help from enlightened beings recommended to us by our gurus.
Thank you Pastor Jean Ai for your message. What you have said is very true. Many people engage in things like that because they do not know better thus, they engage in matters like this so that these people are able to get “help” because of that. The beings will give that sort of assistance to gain the trust that will eventually be used against us.
What you have said about the “I” factor is very true. It indeed that because these beings have that factor of likes and dislikes, we are always in a position that might put us in danger. Thus, when we use platforms like this, it is very dangerous as that would lead us to a path that we may regret in the future that we are not able to do anything about it.
Thank you Pastor Jean Ai for your great advices.
Thank you Vinnie for sharing your research on Ouija. I am always fascinated by paranormal events and stories and I am sure going to find out more about this Ouija on the Internet after this!!
Thank you!
Dear Boon,
I am very glad that you enjoyed my article. I am very happy to hear that as well. However, if you do do your own research at the side, I will suggest that you to do your prayers and mantras to Dorje Shugden strongly. The reason being that at times when we read about these beings and even say their names, we will be reaching out to them and calling them over to where we are. Thus, we should be very careful when we do things like that.
I will NOT recommend you to do any form of playing with these Ouija boards as they are very dangerous. You do not know what will happen. Thus, it is better to be safe then sorry.
As mentioned above, if you are really going to do your own investigations, I hope that you will do Dorje Shugden practices or any form of practice to protect yourself before hand.
Thank you!
Vinnie
This reminds me of all the ouija board games I used to play with my friends growing up in a small town. Guess, I was luckier than most as I didn’t have many scary episodes playing the games. It was all fun and games and didn’t think much of what was actually going on and what could have gone wrong. Such ignorance.
But, reading Vinnie’s article brought a sense of fear to me especially when i was watching the video of Zozo hunting in https://youtu.be/4_I5M9l3z-I. Took me to a lot of uncomfortable places but thanks to Rinpoche’s teachings I was chanting OM BENZA WIKI BITTANA SOHA all the way and managed to keep my fears at bay. But I doubt I will be playing this game ever again. That’s why we must only connect with enlightened beings and take refuge only in enlightened beings with positive energy and compassion and thus will not harm us or wish us harm.
Thank you Fong for your sharing. It is indeed scary how these beings are haunting us. They are beings that are around us and are indeed there. What is shown in the video in the investigation done by the Ghost Adventures is definitely true. Some people take this very lightly, however I will advice you to not do this as these beings can cause harm. They are able to harm us in ways that we may not know. Thus, we should just be careful and not mingle or even say things that may offend them as the consequences are very serious.
I believe that anyone that wants to still dwell with things like this should at least chant Dorje Shugden mantra OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA to protect themselves as we never know how they will harm us.
hi me nome Brent Keween vlogs you way me Date is you dead way is to me nomes me friends Date dead days way me I’m next not is you everything you one you next me not
Thank you Vinnie, for sharing the possible dangers of the Ouija! Most young people like me would have not been exposed to the warnings before therefore we would have not seen it coming or worse, if it leads to these said outcomes because of eager curiosity without further research on its effects.
And it’s truly disturbing of what it wants as a deal. Definitely shall stay away.
Sharifah, it is scary like you said is because these beings do exist and they are all around us. They are just waiting for a chance to pounce on us to take that advantage to get us to go things for them, or eventually join them as part of their gang as spirits.
Through the article it only shows an example of what these beings can do. Beings like Zozo will make deals whenever they have a chance. People are ignorant enough to make the deals with these beings as they are curious and they do not know the severity to the situation.
I hope that through my article it has shown you that we should never make contact or try to control beings like this. We will only burn ourselves when w play with fire.
Thank you Vinnie for this article about Ouija boards. I used to play with homemade ouija boards as well in school with my friends. All of us were fascinated with it because the glass or coin that we used as the planchette would move by itself and answer all our questions.
The scariest experience I had was when I played it during Halloween in college. We asked the spirit where he was, and he spelled, HERE. Everyone was freaking out. Then we asked the spirit to snuff off the candle that was lit to prove that he was in the room. The flame began to die off and all my friends dashed out of the room immediately because they were frightened.
I do believe that Ouija boards are portals for the spirits and it is very dangerous to connect to them because we don’t have the skills to protect ourselves when a spirit attacks us. On hindsight, I’m very lucky that I didn’t get in trouble considering the frequency I used to play.
Nowadays, when I experience spirit disturbances I recite Dorje Shugden’s mantra OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA or DUKKAR’S mantra OM SITATAPATRA HUM PHET 7 OR 21 times and I blow on them to bless them. They immediately go away.
Dear Vinnie,
As I told you personally, I was really excited to read about Zozo and indeed, it was really scary because we know it is real. I personally have never had any experience playing with one but I recall back in school, it was something that was forbidden. They say you invite bad spirits into your lives if you play too much.
Anyway, my problem is not so much as playing with ouija boards but of the type of spirits that induces sleep paralysis. It is really annoying but they can wreak havoc to one’s sleeping patterns. The sad thing is that I didn’t know what to do with it until I met Rinpoche. Just when I met Rinpoche, it got progressively worse until I did Dukkar mantras as advised by Rinpoche.
Rinpoche did explained to me once that instead of giving in to feeling of fear for these beings, we should instead feel compassion. Why? This is because they have tremendous negative karma to be reborn in their state. They experience tremendous suffering of loneliness, attachment, hunger and thirst. Hence, they ‘haunt’ places especially if that was a place they had died or have an emotional attachment. After this was explained to me, I understand a little why they do the things they do. Hence, for most spirits, Kuan Yin’s mantra or Om Mani Padme Hum is recited to bless them and make them go away in peace. Of course, there are angrier and nastier spirits which would require stronger, more wrathful mantras.
Thank you JP and PDL for the sharing. It is indeed very interesting how at times we go into these things due to the curiosity that we have. It is because of that curious nature that we have that caused us to do things like that which will make us regret in the future when it is not being dealt with caution.
JP, I just can’t wait to hear more stories that you have. It is indeed interesting when you have experiences with them. However, I am grateful that nothing bad has happened.
PDL, I understand what you mean by those beings that causes sleep paralysis. It is annoying because we know that we are being invaded in our space, yet we are in no capability to do anything about. However, through this, it shows us how powerful these spirits can be when they want to. Thus, with some beings acting nice to be our friends it is also scary because we do not know when they would turn around to harm us.
To me, the best solution, to not think about them (as they travel at the speed of thought) and also not to participate in activities like this. Also, if at any point of time we feel something uncomfortable, to do Singdongma or Trakze practices.
Thank you Vinnie for writing this interesting article. It brings me back to my school days when I was at boarding school in UK. One of my dorm mate came back from Christmas with an Ouija board and everyone excitedly decided to give it a try that very night. After supper, four sat around the board and the rest crowded at the back. With four index fingers on the planchette, the question was asked. “Is there anyone here with us?”. After a few times, the planchette moved to Yes. Of course the four would start accusing each other of pushing to the plancette. A few tries and questions later, we decided that its real. Then we asked who was the entity, etc. Then the story came. The boarding house that we were staying in belonged to a wealthy and influential family with 3 kids during the times of King Charles 1/Oliver Cromwell. There was civil unrest and this family was killed due to their position. I can’t remember the family’s name but the next day when we checked the history, it was true. The entity was one of the children, 2 girls and a boy (they take turn to “talk” with us). A couple of my friends asked of the results for our upcoming “O” levels. When the answer came, the smart one got upset as she was told she will only get 2 “A”s (it turned out true). After a few days of questions and answers, we finally stopped when suddenly the entity warned us to stop immediately as another being it feared was coming. You can imagine the havoc as the eight of us scrambled (a few screamed which brought the housemistress and a scolding). That night, some friends had dreams and so it was decided that we should stop. I guess we were lucky that the entities were not harmful.
With this article and what I have learnt from Rinpoche’s teachings, I would advise others not to try any Ouija Boards as things could have turn out bad.
Thank you Rinpoche for bringing this message to everyone the dangers of meddling with the unknown through Ouija Boards.
Thank you Sofi for sharing with us your personal story with regards to an Ouija board. It is very interesting and scary in a way. Together with your friends, you all are very lucky to have contacted these good beings that asked you all to stop using the board to contact the underworld as the beings were afraid that through the board, it is attracting the more negative beings.
Like what you mentioned, we are able to ask being like that are unenlightened for our future, but what they are able to see is very limited and they are not able to see further. However, when we take refuge in enlightened beings, those being will be able to see our future and help us without asking anything in return. Reason being that these enlightened beings are here to help us in our spiritual paths.
Despite you and your friends to be lucky meeting and entity that is good, it is pure luck. Like what Rinpoche mentioned, I too do not recommend people using Ouija boards as we do not know who we are contacting. It can be very dangerous at times.
As Buddhist practitioner, we are aware of the existence of other beings who share the same dimension as us, who can not be seen by our naked eyes. We should be respectful of the other sentient beings who share this space with us, instead of summoning them to entertain us.
Like us, unseen beings that exist in the Six Realms of Existence are temporary and imperfect; they too are bound by desire and attachment that stem from ignorance. And given the condition they are in, they are likely to be malice and with the intention to harm.
So, why take the chances to engage in activities that could potentially summon a malevolent being, for example Zozo. Zozo comes across as a cunning and malice spirit waiting to strike a deal and possess the soul of whomever he engages with. Even though this is the first time I came across Zozo, but Ouiji Board and the terrifying consequences are not unheard of and certainly cannot be dismissed as urban legend.
Thank you Rinpoche and Vinnie for this sharing about Ouiji Board and info on Zozo. This is a good reminder that we should not engage in fun activities with unseen beings.
Humbly, bowing down,
Stella Cheang
Dear Stella,
I would not say that any engagement with the unseen beings as fun. These activities are very dangerous and we never know what can happen when we engage in beings like that.
Yes, we will sometimes engage beings like that out of curiosity and wanting to know more about them. However, what we tend to forget is that we are at the losing end. We have thing(s) that they do not have. Thus, the chances of them acting nice to gain our trust and have that connection is always very much higher then what we expect. Adding on to that, we are not able to see these beings thus, we only know how they really look like based on their description to us.
Thank you
Vinnie
