Mewa 6 Birth Buddha: Namgyalma
Introduction
Namgyalma (Tibetan: rnam rgyal ma; རྣམ་རྒྱལ་མ།), also known as ‘Ushnisha Vijaya‘ in Sanskrit, is one of the three Long Life deities commonly practiced within the Gaden Nyengyu tradition.
She is a special emanation of the Supreme Healer Vairocana. Engaging in Namgyalma’s practice or reciting her mantra can bestow the practitioner with infinite benefits regardless if they are Buddhists or not.

History
From the ‘Sutra of The Supreme Sacrosanct Dharani from the Buddha’s Summit‘ translated by the great Brahmin monk Buddhapala during the Tang Dynasty (676 AD), the story in brief is as below:
During the Buddha’s lifetime, there lived a deva named Devaputra Susthita in Trayastrimsha Heaven. He had lived as a heavenly being for a long time and finally, as the end drew close, he heard a voice telling him that his life in the God Realm would end in seven days, after which he would be reborn as an animal for seven successive lifetimes, enter the hell realms then only would he be reborn as a handicapped person in the human realm.
Having heard this, Susthita became terrified of his fate and sought an audience with Lord Sakra, the king of all the Gods. With great sorrow, Lord Sakra could not find a way to help Susthita, but felt that only Shakyamuni Buddha could save Susthita from such a terrible fate.
With this thought in mind, Lord Sakra descended to the garden of Anathapindika in Jeta Grove, where the Buddha resided, with bountiful offerings.
Upon hearing of the plight of Susthita through Lord Sakra, out of great compassion the Buddha then bestowed the Usnisha Vijaya Dharani upon Lord Sakra and instructed him in the benefits of engaging in this practice.
After receiving such precious instructions, Lord Sakra returned to heaven where he conveyed the practice to Susthita and instructed him to engage in this practice as per Buddha’s instructions.
Having received the Dharani, Susthita with great faith kept up with the practice for the remaining six days of his life. Upon completion, the karma for him to suffer in the lower realms was eradicated and his lifespan was increased, thus allowing him to remain on the path to Enlightenment for a long time.
Iconography
Namgyalma is a female Bodhisattva with three faces and eight arms. Her three heads symbolize the ability of her practice to heal all diseases and remove all obstacles found in the three worlds (Skt: Trailokya). Her middle face and eight arms are white, symbolizing her ability to eliminate disasters. Her yellow face on the right symbolizes her ability to bestow longevity, and her blue face on the left symbolizes her wrath in destroying demons. Her nine eyes indicate her capability to perceive the methods to achieve the nine levels of Enlightenment and her ability to lead us to liberation.
Her first right hand, which is located at her chest, holds a double dorje which is a symbol of complete inner and outer harmony. Her second right hand holds a white lotus on which is seated Buddha Amitabha. This symbolizes that her practitioners can transform from worldly existence to Buddhahood. Her third right hand holds an arrow which signifies penetrating wisdom that reveals the ultimate reality. Her fourth right hand is in the mudra of supreme generosity, which shows her ability to fulfill worldly and spiritual needs.
Her first left hand holds a vajra lasso, which symbolizes her ability to tame the mind. Her second left hand holds a bow, the tool of which under great concentration allows the arrow of wisdom to hit its target. Her third left hand is in the mudra of giving refuge, while her fourth left hand holds a long-life vase filled with healing nectar.

Note: This short prayer can be recited daily on its own or as part of a longer set of prayers.
Glorious Goddess, of autumn-moon-like colour,
With beautiful, peaceful, three-faced, eight-armed form,
Granting supreme life with Gnosis beyond measure!
Victorious lady (Vijaya), homage and praise to you!
