His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche, radiant and glowing on his 90th birthday

How a person accomplishes greatness generally occurs in one of two ways. They can be great by virtue of their position at birth, or they become great by virtue of their deeds. Those who fall in the latter category usually command more respect, having exerted the effort to go above and beyond their circumstances to succeed. This is especially true within the microcosm of Buddhism, where the situation errs on the side of meritocracy. Based on the strength of their practice and scholarship, all monks theoretically have equal opportunity to ascend to positions of greatness.

But while there is greatness, very few ascend to a position of universal respect. His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa – these names resonate with everyone as embodiments of peace, compassion, sacrifice and therefore are worthy of respect.

Another name that is less well-known, but nonetheless just as great as the above-named luminaries is His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche. There are four schools of Tibetan Buddhism – Gelug, Kagyu, Nyingma, Sakya – and for nearly a decade, His Holiness was the throne holder of the largest of these four schools, the Gelugs. That means for the duration of his term – for seven years – His Holiness guided and directed the spiritual futures of millions of Buddhists around the world.

What is more impressive is that His Holiness Gaden Trisur Rinpoche presided over the Gelug school at a time when it was torn apart by the violent divisiveness of the Dorje Shugden ban. In the face of such adversity, His Holiness successfully navigated the political, social and spiritual challenges that accompanied the onslaught of the ban. In the process, he became a shining example of how to maintain samaya (guru-disciple relationship) and one’s spiritual commitments with dignity and grace.

And as is common with positions of high regard and visibility, many lesser people have seen their personal lives scrutinised, and had their reputations attacked and besmirched. It is therefore a testament to the Gaden Trisur’s character and the respect people have for him that he completed his entire term with an unblemished and unstained reputation. Neither did he receive criticism for his Dorje Shugden practice, even after he revealed his faith.

What Exactly Is a Gaden Tripa?

Within Tibetan Buddhism, there are four main traditions – the Kagyu, Sakya, Nyingma and Gelug. Each of these traditions has their own throne holder (spiritual head) who is tasked with maintaining the purity and traditions of the lineage. It is their responsibility to guide and advise on religious matters directly related to their tradition.

Contrary to popular belief, the head of the Gelug school is not the Dalai Lama. The position, in fact, belongs to the Gaden Tripa who is considered Lama Tsongkhapa’s representative on earth. In fact, the ‘Gaden’ in the title refers to the heavenly abode of Lama Tsongkhapa while ‘Tri’ is the Tibetan word for ‘throne’. Once the Gaden Tripa has retired, he takes on the title of Gaden Trisur or ‘Gaden Tripa Emeritus’.

trisur1

The position of the Gaden Tripa reflects the best of the Gelug spirit of meritocracy. Unlike the thrones of the other Buddhist lineages which are usually hereditary, in order to ascend to the Gaden throne, one need not necessarily be born into a position of rank or into a particular family. Tibetans like to say that even a common farmhand can ascend to the Gelugpa throne, if he applies sufficient effort to his practice.

What is also needed is huge amounts of merit. It is commonly said that to occupy such a holy position as the throne of the Gaden Tripa requires significant merits because the role is such an important one. Thus if someone does not have the merits to support their appointment to the position, something may happen to compel them to vacate the throne for another candidate. The fact His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche successfully occupied the throne for the entirety of his term is therefore no insignificant fact. It is a clear reflection of His Holiness’ qualities and attainments.

Learn more about the Gaden Tripa system
and the 101st Gaden Trisur Rinpoche:

The Shugden Persecutions

This is precisely the type of person who stood at the helm of the Gelug lineage for over a decade, and precisely the type of person who never relinquished His Dorje Shugden practice. For seven years, His Holiness the Gaden Trisur was entrusted with the spiritual futures of millions of practitioners, and throughout all of those years, He maintained His faith in Dorje Shugden.

In the years since 1996, those who chose not to abandon the practice of the Dharmapala Dorje Shugden given by their holy Gurus, and those who stood firm in the face of attempts to discredit their holy lamas, have had to withstand unending torrents of attacks, all designed to dislodge them from the practices, oaths and loyalties they had sworn to as ordained monks and true Dharma practitioners.

At the height of the attacks on Dorje Shugden monks and lay practitioners that reached its zenith in 2008, came one single act by the holiest of Gelugpa faithful. It was an act that was pure and void of melodrama and theatre, and it became a clarion call of faith and a symbol of immovable devotion amidst the tempest of confusion, lies and disinformation that had raged for years.

The Great Bastion of Truth

This pivotal point in the strife that had hit Je Tsongkhapa’s lineage was a result of His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche’s wise leadership and well-timed action.

trisur2

His Holiness Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche taking the throne for the first time as the Gaden Tripa in Gaden Lachi (the main prayer hall of Gaden Monastery)

In the year 2010, after the anti-Shugden campaign had devastated all in its path for over 10 years, the highest authority of the Gelugpa sect made his move to leave Gaden Shartse Monastery. He chose instead to be an incumbent of Shar Gaden Monastery, which was established two years prior, to accommodate the Gaden Shartse monks who had no choice but to leave their monastery because they refused to break the vows made to their teachers and their Dharma Protector.

There were no grandiose pronouncements, no statements or proclamations, no speeches, no scenes and no commotions of any sort. Very simply, there was no need for such things because the behaviour and actions of one so pure transcends mere words. His Holiness Gaden Trisur Rinpoche gave up everything he had established and ‘gained’ in Gaden Shartse and chose instead the new, impoverished and embattled Shar Gaden Monastery as his spiritual home. And with that, the entire world saw how the perfect exemplar of Je Tsongkhapa’s tradition felt about the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden and how wrong the prevailing accusations against the Protector were.

trisur8

H.H. Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is a perfect exemplar of Je Tsongkhapa’s tradition

It was a stroke of pure brilliance to wait until he had retired from office to reveal his practice. Had it been announced while he was in office that the Gaden Tripa “abandoned” the practice, it would have devastated millions of Dorje Shugden practitioners. But should he have prematurely announced while in office that he was a Dorje Shugden practitioner, it would have been very difficult for him to benefit others through his position as Gaden Tripa.

The fact he waited until he retired to leave Gaden Shartse and align himself with Shar Gaden, thus publicly positioning himself with the practice of Dorje Shugden, was a selfless act which bolstered the faith and practice of millions of Dorje Shugden devotees who for many years had felt very little support against the juggernaut of the Tibetan leadership’s anti-Dorje Shugden onslaught.

No Ordinary Monk

His Holiness Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is no ordinary monk by any stretch of the imagination although everything about this senior monk seems to be conspiring to hide his greatness.

trisur5

H.H. Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is no ordinary monk

  • His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Rinpoche is an ordained monk who has flawlessly kept all his vows – pratimoksha, bodhisattva and tantric vows for over 80 years;
  • His Holiness was awarded his Geshe Lharampa degree in 1973, which is no easy feat in itself;
  • His Holiness was the Abbot of Gyutö College, the elite tantric university that has produced countless scholar-saints over time;
  • In 1986, His Holiness was chosen from amongst the best of Gelugpa scholars by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to represent the lineage at the Ecumenical Encounters of Assisi in Italy, an important event that involved the highest representations from 32 Christian organisations and 11 religious bodies around the world;
  • In 1992, His Holiness was chosen to lead Gaden Shartse Monastic College as its abbot;
  • In 1995, three years later, His Holiness was bestowed the title ‘Sharpa Choje-la’ which is the second highest luminary in the Gelugpa echelon;
  • And finally in 2003, His Holiness the Dalai Lama bestowed upon His Holiness the highest seat in the Gelugpa order, the throne of the Gaden Tripa.

Nothing More Precious

So we see clearly that His Holiness Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche has not only spent an entire lifetime benefiting others through the preservation and promotion of the Gelug lineage, but has also clearly and deservedly earned the Dalai Lama’s favour. It is without question a highly coveted position that many aspire to. It is also a position that virtually guarantees a lifetime of honour and privilege not to mention comfort and security in one’s old age. And yet, none of this holds any weight when placed on the scale against the value of faith.

trisur3

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche

On the face of it, His Holiness’ move to Shar Gaden may appear to be nothing extraordinary. However, anyone with even a passing knowledge of how the Tibetan leadership operates will know that what His Holiness did risked his entire distinguished monastic career and tremendous reputation.

In Dharamsala, to be perceived as not going along with the policies of the Tibetan leadership, let alone those of the Dalai Lama, is nothing short of a death wish. It is to open oneself to accusations of being anti-Tibetan, anti-Dharma/Buddhism, anti-Dalai Lama and generally to be regarded as a traitor of the Tibetan people.

We see this in the obscene persecutions of every Dorje Shugden practitioner whose only ‘crime’ is to practise with integrity and uphold the sacred vows they made to their teachers which, incidentally, is a commitment that is central to the practice of Vajrayana Buddhism.

trisur9

H.H. Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche remains the most senior Gelugpa lama

These are noble traits that should be hailed and emulated in any ethical society but because this virtue stands in the way of the Tibetan leadership’s path, it has to be destroyed. Simply put, to have an opinion which is not in line with that of the Dalai Lama or the Tibetan leadership is regarded as a crime.

And yet, by moving to Shar Gaden, the implication (whether intended or not) was that everything the Dalai Lama and Tibetan leadership had alleged about Dorje Shugden is simply wrong. That was the risk His Holiness Gaden Trisur Rinpoche readily embraced for what he believed in. While this move had a resounding impact, namely giving hope to and endorsing the stance of Dorje Shugden practitioners worldwide who had endured undeserving hardship in the face of Dharamasala’s witch-hunts, His Holiness Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche has never once made a statement against His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Pure Motivation

trisur10

H.H. Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche graciously granted an audience to representatives of Tsem Rinpoche and Kechara in France

Today, His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche remains the most senior living Gelugpa lama. Not only did he hold the highest rank of the Gelugpa lineage which he discharged successfully, he is also the most senior of all living Gaden Tripas in the Gelugpa’s 600-year-old history. Technically there is no one more qualified or senior in all of the Gelugpa world today, not even the current 104th Gaden Tripa whom he outranks because he is a Gaden Trisur (Tripa Emeritus).

For all of His Holiness’ accomplishments, these days he lives in a modest home in Paris and has on his shrine images of both Dorje Shugden and also His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. In the future, when the illegal religious ban on Dorje Shugden becomes merely an unsavoury page in Gelugpa and Tibetan history, it will become clear to all how someone like His Holiness the 101st Gaden Tripa contributed so significantly to upholding the pure Gelugpa lineage, not by force or coercion or oratory profundity, but simply by his courage, integrity and holding on to what he sincerely believes in.

May His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche live long and may he witness in this lifetime the end of an unholy ban against a sacred practice and the renaissance of Je Tsongkhapa’s lineage.

A blessed letter by His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur
Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal for His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche (February 13, 2008)

Translation

His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, from the Monastic Seat of Gaden Shartse, is an exceptional master who has intentionally taken birth for a noble mission. To take upon himself the responsibility of upholding the pristine and golden dual sutra and tantra Legacy of Manjunatha Tsongkhapa, who re-discovered the wide and ancient pathway shown by the historical Buddha, Tsem Rinpoche sought ordination into Buddhism at his personal initiative, and progressed along his training strictly according to the Vinaya.

At Gaden Monastic Seat, he also studied the Abhidharma and Sutra Pitaka. He has diligently put into practice whatever he has learned. Particularly noteworthy about Rinpoche is that he has engaged in aspects of generosity practice, such as offerings to the Buddha and the Sangha members, that are truly noteworthy and impressive.

Among his many endeavors, Rinpoche is currently involved in the challenging task of building an exceptional image of Manjunatha Je Tsongkhapa rising to 108 feet in height. Such an undertaking demands immense effort, forbearance and perseverance. I would like to recommend that this worthy project deserves the whole-hearted support of the benefactors of the Dharma. With my heartfelt prayers that this endeavor of Tsem Tulku Rinpoche will be fully realized.

    Dear friends,

Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.

You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.

Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.

May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden

This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.

The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 asssistants of his mandala.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.

Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-

    1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-

    – Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
    – Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
    – Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
    – Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
    – Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.

    2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.

    3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.

    4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.

    5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.

    6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.

    7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama

Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.

After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.

His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.

Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.

Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.

The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can be harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he be harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

In Tibet, a boy from the faraway provinces would normally enter into one of the hundreds of wayside monasteries in order to receive their novice ordination vows. In these smaller provincial monasteries, the young monks received their initial education on reading the Tibetan script, memorisation of the scriptures and so forth. Once these young monks came of age and received their full ordination vows, they would travel great distances to the larger monastic universities such as Gaden (3,300 monks), Sera (6,000 monks), Drepung (10,000 monks), Tashi Lhunpo (4,000 monks) and Amdo Tashikyil (4,000 monks)in order to further their monastic education on the great treatises and so on. Some of these boys from humble beginnings in the provinces would end up becoming great scholars and masters.

This was what happened to Kensur Jampa Yeshe Rinpoche and the 103rd Gaden Tripa Lobsang Tenzin. Both of these lamas were originally from Tsem Monastery in the Yara valley of Kham, Tibet. When Kensur Rinpoche was just a young monk entering into Gaden Monastery, Tsem Rinpoche’s previous life was the abbot at that time. On the other hand, the Gaden Tripa was the nephew of Rinpoche’s previous life, Kentrul Thubten Lamsang. Such was the close connection that Tsem Rinpoche had with these two lamas, going back into previous lives. In this life in fact, Tsem Rinpoche offered his own ladrang in Gaden Shartse Monastery to Kensur Jampa Yeshe Rinpoche. Furthermore, the Gaden Tripa Lobsang Tenzin’s ladrang (house) in Drepung Loseling Monastery was fully sponsored by Tsem Rinpoche and his students, and Tsem Rinpoche also fully sponsored on a monthly basis some of the students in the Gaden Tripa’s house. Tsem Rinpoche also found personal sponsorship for the Gaden Tripa himself.

The Gaden Tripa is an extraordinary person who holds great responsibility in the Tibetan Buddhism Gelug tradition. He is the head of the Gelug school, throne holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s lineage, instead of Dalai Lama like what many people thought. The throne holder, His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche carries on the teaching that leads to liberation on his shoulder with pure motivation. This video condensed and made simple the history of the Dorje Shugden ban and the sufferings Dorje Shugden people experienced and continue to experience for 20 years. The video also laid out and reveal the truth and facts that Dorje Shugden was the Protector who advised His Holiness the Dalai Lama to flee to India and hence His Holiness’ life is saved. There is no religious freedom for the Dorje Shugden people worldwide because of the Dorje Shugden ban executed by the Central Tibetan Administration. We are, until today being discriminated and persecuted for simply practising our choice of religion and this is the truth.

A Gaden Tripa – the Gaden Throneholder, representing Lama Tsongkhapa on Earth. The supreme head that governs all spiritual and religious affairs in the Gelugpa school of Buddhism.

In order to qualify to become a Gaden Throne holder, a scholar monk would need to undergo not only his monastic studies, but to continue on to become a Geshe Lharampa, the PHD equivalent of monastic studies. Thereafter, the monk would have to enter a tantric college, either Gyuto or Gyumed. In the Gelug tradition, these are the only 2 tantric colleges. After that he has to elected to become Gekul-la, the disciplinarian of the monastic school, who serves a term of 6 months or a year. Thereafter, he will have to become the Umze-la, the lead chanter of the monastic college/school. This is held for 3 years. He would have memorised a large numbers of rituals, prayers and pujas as he leads all religious ceremonies through prayer. Thereafter, he can be elected to become the Abbot of the college/school (Kensur Rinpoche), where they will serve a term of another 3 years. After their term as abbot, they become the Abbot Emeritus, they are then in line to be in the seats to become Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche (hailing from Gyuto Tantric College) or Jangtse Choeje Rinpoche (hailing from Gyumed Tantric College). From there, only then the are inline to become the Gaden Tri Rinpoche, or the throneholder.

As you can see, it is not easy to become the Gaden Tri, and therefore, when the 101st Gaden Tripa supports and never gave up his practice of Dorje Shugden, it states alot, and means alot to Dorje Shugden practitioners. He is elucidating his purity in his practice of Guru Devotion, which is inspiring to many practitioners today. If Dorje Shugden practice was so bad, then all the Gaden Tri Rinpoches and Gaden Tripa would have denounced the practice immediately, but why does 101st Gaden Tripa, and 102nd Gaden Tripa among many others, continue with their practice? He is living healthily, at 90 + years old now, with a very sharp mind and continuing his Dharma practice. Spirit worshipping would stray one from the BuddhaDharma, but 101st Gaden Tripa is still steadfast in his practices, so it defeats the saying that Dorje Shugden practice is bad.

Thank you for sharing this inspiring, exemplary post on HH 101st Gaden Tripa Rinpoche!

Sometimes Lamas do something that we cannot comprehend for other reasons. One thing for sure the reasons for them to do such action is out of compassion for all sentient beings. Besides, it is also very important for us to follow our guru’s instruction until our last breath.

H.H the 101st Gaden Trisur Rinpoche might be quiet about his practice due to his duty the Gaden Tripa back then. But he has not given up the practice given to him by his teacher. The 101st Gaden Trisur Rinpoche left Gaden Shartse to Shar Gaden was nothing political, it was merely his loyalty and faith to his teacher.

He had always remained quiet, focused in teaching Dharma and not involved in politic at all. This is what a head of a sect should do. He has shown us a very good example of a good Sangha.

I love to read about high lamas and erudite masters which is very inspiring. His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche is the most senior living Gelugpa lama and is indeed a great masters of all times. He being highly trained in both fields of Sutra and Tantra . During such turbulent times, it takes great faith, perseverance and courage to be in their respective positions. Yet they were perfect examples of holding their compassion to ensure that many benefit from their teachings and deeds. The singular act of the 101st Gaden Tripa, the head of the Gelugpa Lineage and Lama
Tsongkhapa’s representative on earth that touched me most, is his act of quietly leaving Gaden Shartse Monastery to become an incumbent of Shar Gaden Monastery. Shar Gaden Monastery was established to accommodate Gaden Shartse Monastery monks who had been forced to leave Gaden Shartse Monastery because they refused to break their vows to their teachers and to Dorje Shugden. Knowing this, the fact that this noble -minded throne holder of Tsongkhapa’s lineage actually chose to become an incumbent of Shar Gaden, shows to the world in no uncertain terms what his views are on Dorje Shugden! He chose the new, impoverished and embattled Shar Gaden
as his spiritual home upon his retirement, showing to the world how wrong the accusations against Dorje Shugden have been and are even now!

I am also deeply touched by his words in the Foreword that he wrote on Rinpoche for Rinpoche’s book “Compassion Conquers all”. He spoke of Rinpoche’s “boundless unceasing energy that comes from acting entirely out of compassion” and of his “fervent and sole motivation to inspire seekers to find a true and valid path to inner peace and to develop the same compassionate heart in all his students”.Such are the sincere words of a great and pure holy being about Tsem Rinpoche. These are from the very lips of the 101st Gaden Tripa, head of the Gelug Lineage, about Tsem Rinpoche as a pure Tsongkhapa Lineage holder whose sole motive is to compassionately bring all seekers on a valid path
    to ultimate inner peace.

Yes, may the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche have stable health and long life. May Your Holiness witness in this lifetime the lifting of the unholy ban on the sacred practice of Dorje Shugden so that Je Tsongkhapa’s lineage teachings will endure and flourish in the ten directions.

Gelug is the largest schools among the 4 schools of Tibetan Buddhism. The throne holder for Gelug is not the Dalai Lama. This position belongs to Gaden Tripa, an appointed office depending on study, practise, and the holding of vows.

Huge amount of merits are needed to be the throne holder to complete 7 years term because this is an important role that influence millions of scholars and practitioners in Buddhism. H.H. the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche successfully occupied the throne for customary term, a clear reflection of His Holiness’ qualities and attainments.

His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur is the most senior living Gelupa lama and also the most senior of all living Gaden Tripas. His Holiness is a living Buddha inspiring many practitioners to upholding the pure Gelugpa lineage and keeps our faith and samaya with our Guru and protector Dorje Shugden.

May His Holiness the 101st Gaden Trisur Jetsun Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche live long and may he witness in this lifetime the end of an unholy ban against a sacred practice and the renaissance of Je Tsongkhapa’s lineage. _/\_

Reading this article on HH the 101st Gaden Trisur Rinpoche reminds me very much of H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche, founder of Kechara House. It is about how these “Heroes in my eyes” are able to uphold the purity of teaching and propagating Je Tsongkapa’s doctrine and yet holding steadfastly to their samaya with their Gurus to continue practising Dorje Shugden which was given to them by their Gurus.

During such turbulent times, it takes great faith, perseverance and courage to be in their respective positions. Yet they were perfect examples of holding their compassion to ensure that many benefit from their teachings and deeds.

As it is known and proven beyond reasonable doubts the suffering from discrimination by CTA on Dorje Shugden devotees, it must have been much pain for these great Lamas to endure.

What impacts me the most is how they have found the balance. I also rejoice that HH the 101st Gaden Trisu Rinpoche did not suffer too much abuse when he left Gaden Shartse for Shar Gaden unlike what happened to H.E Tsem Rinpoche who is harassed and abused and face vulgar unkindness on a daily basis.

To the “Unsung Hero”, HH the 101st Gaden Trisu Rinpoche, I say thank you for being the example you are as a great DS lama and may you live long and turn the wheel of Dharma.

The concept of rebirth has a long association with Buddhism. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to the teaching that the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called saṃsāra. One will begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. What they are reborn as depends on their actions in their previous life rather kamma. As a Buddhist we should believe in rebirth but still many people don’t . Buddha taught us that choices of rebirth make a difference and can shape many lifetimes. Buddhists believe that nothing that exists is permanent and everything will ultimately cease to be. There is a belief in rebirth

Against the odds two inspiring nuns fought all the way to become ordained, fighting for their rights to practice Buddhism . Interesting read of how they went through , bringing equality for women in Thailand. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged female monks, have been defying the tradition getting ordained overseas, in Sri Lanka or India. Buddhist women have been fighting for years for equality and social acceptance in Thailand. They just can’t be ordained by Thai monks. Ven. Dhammananda, 68 year old former university lecturer and activist became Thailand’s first Theravadin bhikkhuni after going the odds. Inspiring read biography on Ven. Dhammananda and Ven. Dr. Lee. They had gone through great hardships, discrimination and against the many odds in bringing equality to women in Buddhism in Thailand.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great inspiration post.

The unseen things are spiritual realities that are eternal and invisible to our physical eye. There are many forces and phenomena that are not visible to the naked eye. There are many things that humans cannot see yet there are some could see. For what is can be seen is only. Things do exist even we can’t see, believing their existence is our choice. Things that we can’t see in the world opens up a curiosity and exploration by some. Whether through scientific inquiry, or spiritual exploration, the pursuit of knowledge about the unseen can lead to profound insights about ourselves and the universe.
Malacca City is the historic capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in Malaysia serving as a link between east and west for over 500 years. Famous for breath-taking sights with rich heritage, ancient dark culture and history with many old centuries buildings with an interesting past and a colourful ghost story. For that reason alone it is worth visiting as is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its well-preserved historical center. There’s many historical mansions been passed down generation to generations and with many ghostly sighting by the locals and visitors. There’s the reason many unseen beings loitering and attached to these places. Such an interesting and incredibly creepy watching the video in this blog host by Li Kim. Li Kim had done a great work all along with her team to share with readers about our historic Malacca .
Thank you Rinpoche and Li Kim for this sharing.

Vajrayogini symbolizes the wisdom of all enlightened beings and embodies the impulse of inspiration that drives the Buddhas to attain the perfect enlightenment. Vajrayogini is one of the most effective practices for people today. We can make offerings such as gold or jewel offerings and so on. The offering of gold helps us to collect merits, spiritual attainments, gain a deeper connection to Vajrayogini. It also creates the causes to attain a Buddha’s body.
Make Offerings to Vajrayogini in Kechara Forest Retreat at Bentong is such an meritorious way for us to collect merits. All thanks to our Guru having conceptualised the idea of having a statue of Vajrayogini for everyone . Recitation of Vajrayogini mantra can be a powerful tool for self-transformation, healing and liberation from samsara.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing with details explanation .

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this insightful article. Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way. What ever matter to us at the time of death is nothing. In the end, it’s not the years in our life that count it’s what you leave behind that matters. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. Learning Dharma and practicing dharma is the our choice that’s matter. Some of the key points to take notes, read, study the Lam Rim and apply it, engage in Sadhana daily and consistently. No one will help us at the moment of death but ourselves. Spiritual practicing is the best choice.

Well the size of Buddha statues in Tibetan Buddhism is important because it represents the Buddha’s immense ability and vast knowledge. Hence the Buddha statues hold the symbol of satisfaction within, peace and happiness. They are a symbol of inspiration for every human being. When we focus on the Buddha statues, it gives us inner peace that our mind, our heart and our soul gets enlightened.
We have are so fortunate seeing and circumambulating where the 9-foot Dorje Shugden statue and with 500 mantra stones engraved with Dorje Shugden’s sacred mantra. As Rinpoche had said before the bigger and more Buddha statues helps in planting seeds of enlightenment in people’s mind-streams. It also help us to generate as much merit and purify as much karma as possible. Merely by seeing all those big statues at Kechara Forest Retreat is a blessing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

The 4th Tagpu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub, most commonly known as Tagpu Dorje Chang, was a highly accomplished yogi Highly attained lama who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas and even travel astrally to receive direct teachings from them. His recognised line of incarnations stem all the way back to the 14th Century. He is generally regarded as such amongst Gelug lineage holders. He spent most of his time in a hermitage located above Sera Monastery, gave teachings and transmitted many vital practices and lineages to his foremost student Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Besides receiving the complete instructions of Dorje Shugden’s practice, Tagpu Dorje Chang had many other mystical experiences throughout his lifetime. Interesting read biography of a highly accomplished mahasiddha lama.

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.
He was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia years back giving an enthralling Dhamma talk on the timeless teachings of Ajahn Chah.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

My Dharma boy (left) and Oser girl loves to laze around on the veranda in the mornings. They enjoy all the trees, grass and relaxing under the hot sun. Sunbathing is a favorite daily activity. I care about these two doggies of mine very much and I enjoy seeing them happy. They are with me always. Tsem Rinpoche Always be kind to animals and eat vegetarian- https://bit.ly/2Psp8h2

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
