Woman Arrested For Mistreating Dog…
“NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Humane law enforcement agents of the ASPCA arrested a Queens woman accused of animal neglect.
Acting on an anonymous complaint, ASPCA agents went to the residence of 47-year-old Ana Herra and found a female mixed breed dog named Julie, who was in “terrible condition.”
According to Joseph Pentangelo, the Assistant Director for Humane Law Enforcement at the ASPCA, when authorities came upon the dog, she was “very weak” and “in need of medical attention.”
Pentangelo told 1010 WINS Saturday that the dog had to be euthanized after having a physical exam at Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.
“Her health was very compromised and she had not had veterinary attention in a long period of time,” he said.
Herra was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. She faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
“Animals do depend on us for their care and nobody has to own a pet. But if you do own a pet, you should recognize the responsibility and there are laws that involve that responsibility,” Pentangelo said.”

It is terrible how people mistreat animals that they have taken in as pets. Animals cannot voice their discomfort, nor can they do much to get out of their situation. On our part, it is only right to give basic attention and care to those whom we have CHOSEN to bring under our roof.
I feel very sorry for the dog that was mistreated by this lady who was supposed to take care of her. Neighbours in Corona had called the ASPCA to report a matted dog. A dog only becomes matted when it has been neglected – the dog’s natural long hair would get tangled and stick together… a little like dreadlocks.
This neglected dog, Julie, was a mixed breed dog around 10-12 years old… and she was so weak that she was unable to stand.
Like all of our pets, Julie deserves a happy home and a loving, responsible owner – especially since she didn’t choose to be in this particular home. A lot of people think that they are doing the dogs a favour by taking care of them. It’s quite the opposite. Animals teach us patience, loyalty and friendship.
According to ASPCA, “Julie was moved to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital after Herra relinquished control of her to the ASPCA. Just a few hours after her admission, Julie was ‘humanely’ euthanized because of her compromised health.”
I do not support euthanasia at all. Just like how we should not mistreat animals, it’s a form of mistreatment to end an animals life when WE choose to. That is why I have set up Kechara Animal Sanctuary, where we practice a “No-Kill” policy. So far, it has worked out for the best… and like in Sara‘s case, it shows that even in the most dire and desperation situations… there is always a chance.
If we believe in karma, we know that these dogs will have to live out their karmic results in this life or in another. So if we do see an animal suffering, we should give as much relief as we can, such as medical help, and also chant mantras and blow on them. This will calm the animal down and also plant karmic seeds in their minds…
Never mistreat others just because you can. With animals, other than having different bodies, they too do not wish to feel suffering just like us.
I have added a video below of another matted dog. He was one of the worst matted dog cases. This type of neglect is a form of animal cruelty in itself. Do take a look…

When we have chosen to have a dog pet ,bringing under our roof we have the responsibilities to give love , care treating them as a member of our family. Dogs can’t speak but having a close bond with them one will somehow understand them. All I can say is dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen. A dog will teach you unconditional love. love can make him wag his tail.
Heart felt after reading this post , sad story of how a dog was mistreated by a lady owner Herra. This neglected dog named Julie, was so weak and unable to stand when the ASPCA found her. Julie condition was so bad and in need of medical attention. The lady Herra was arrested for cruelty, and mistreating and was charged. Like all of our pets, Julie deserves a happy home . Dogs are man’s best friend.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article to highlight the mistreatment of the dog owners towards their dogs. Nowadays, we do come across dog owners who does not take care of their own dogs and some even heavily abuse them. Why in the first place they want to take in the dog as their pet if they themselves don’t want to take care of the dog? I think if anyone thinking of getting a dog as their pet must really think it over and over again carefully before adopting them as it is a commitment.
With folded palms,

This for many people is what is most offensive about hunting—to some, disgusting: that it encourages, or allows, us not only to kill but to take a certain pleasure in killing. It’s not as though the rest of us don’t countenance the killing of tens of millions of animals every year. Yet for some reason we feel more comfortable with the mechanical killing practiced, out of view and without emotion..
I can’t say that I am happy to read about this because the poor doggie had went through and suffered a lot during the process, the only thing I am glad that has happened would be the fact that the woman was arrested. We should be responsible for our speech and acts, therefore it is very important to think twice before we say or do anything because sometimes the consequences are pretty massive. I hope that more awareness will be brought towards animal abuse and I pray that it will come to an end. In order for this to become real, government officials should do the best they can to ensure that the culprits are punished rationally.
It makes me sick to my stomach when I hear a story of an abused pet and how the owner cannot give love to him/her and leaves her to suffer. It is because irresponsible people like that take an animal home and hurt them and neglect them without means to make them live.
The reason I say this is because when you take an animal home, they join your family, and you take the responsibility to take care of that animal with love. When you don’t since you have taken priority for that animal, the animal cannot be helped by others. So you take that animals chances of being helped by not fulfilling your promise to it when you took it home and made it your own family member. You destroy that animal’s life. Even when I can’t see my dog in the garden everyday when I am doing work or when I cam tired. I at least see him and make a commitment to see him when I can. But I do not cut off his love and supply to live. He is not abused. Just on somedays a bit lonely when my other dog is outside. The point is I still love him and I will always. In fact I will see him tomorrow because I had a lot of homework this weekend. I still say hi when I don’t have time to play too.
But the fact that there is punishment now. And there is warning to all those people who don’t care and wish to hurt. That people are learning to be aware of crime against lives and not just humans. That is a good thing to take back from this. We are learning. It is a start.
This is really sad, and I do agree that if we own a pet, the pet is our responsibility. If we can’t take good care of one’s life, its consider as an abuse. These wonderful beings do not deserve to be treated this way, its better not to have a pet than having one yet do not know how to take care of it.
This is so terrible! If people do not want to take responsible, do not have pets then. Why have something at home which you wouldn’t take care, you will ended up making the poor thing suffer.
Every single pet deserves to be treated well, deserves to have a nice and happy home.
Poor little Julie, I hope she takes a good rebirth and will never have to go through the pain she has been through again.
Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
Love, beatrix.
This is very good news. Not the fact that a dog was abused but rather the abuser was caught. It is a good day in the fight against animal cruelty. I wish that all people who commit the act of abuse towards their animal companions be arrested and fined. If laws are enforced, cruelty will stop.
What kind of person would do such a thing to their pet? I just can’t believe it. I mean, this women probably did decide to have a dog under the same house as her, which means that it is her responsibility to take care of the dog. So i don’t see a reason why this dog has to be treated this way.
When i saw the pictures in the video, It looked so bad, i thought it didn’t even look like a dog in one of the photos. Its actually that bad. I truly feel bad for the dog. But i am so happy to know that it is now in good hands and that it will be taken care of with love.
Animals should not be treated in that way they should be treated with love and care. Dogs in just like a reflection of its own owner, if the owner treat it badly then the dog will be mean to people too, if they treat them with love and care then it will trust human beings. I love animals very very much i wish that one day animals will trust humans and humans will trust animals too.
Feel sad reading this story. Yet, I wonder how many animal mistreating cases are discovered with the culprits punished accordingly.
Somehow I feel that the penalty of 1K fine seems so little as compared to the pains that the animal has to go through. Like Rinpoche has said, animals cant speak out their pains like we do, especially when it is internal injuries or anything that is not apparent from their body, chances are that when we discover the illnesses it may already be too late.
I do not like euthanasia as well. It is really very painful to have to kill our own pets with a needle.
Hence, this calls for close observation on our own pets. If they act differently from their normal selves, it is best to send them to pet immediately.
Dogs are really very loyal to their animals, even if they are suffering due to neglect, they still stick by their own owners. I do not really know where else I can find this kind of loyalty.
And here’s another case of blatant torture. I cannot wait for these laws to be tightened and enforced throughout the world.

I’ll pray for this woman and the dog.
For a person to do that to an animal she must be living in the lowest realms while looking like a human being. May she learn peace and compassion.
There’s no excuse for this! Yes, grooming is expensive, that’s why my husband and I bought a set of clippers and groom our dog ourselves. I can’t do anything fancy, but Davie’s getting really good at it. Your vet can even teach you how to drain a dog’s scent gland. 🙂
Why do people even get a pet when they are not prepared to care for it properly? And when they relaise that they cannot care for it, why don’t they just find it a new home?
Human beings can inflict pain and abuse on animals by just being neglectful.
In the case above, the Law of man stepped in to punish. Regardless, the Laws of Karma always apply.
My daughter is a dog groomer and she sees all kinds of animals in this condition and then the customers are angry with HER when she tells them they need to take better care of the animals. She has to shave many of them completely and the customers are angry because the dog is shaved. It is horrible to get an animal that requires grooming and then go for months or even years without getting them cared for properly and then blame the groomer. My daughter has worked with animals since she was 12, starting volunteering at a local animal shelter in California and she said the sorrow she felt working in those environment was unbelievable. Though through all of this, she continues to try to help animals after 11 years she is still helping them. She is a lovely kind hearted person.
