Venerable Geshe Tsultrim from Gaden Jangtse Monastery

The scholar and teacher Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin is from Gaden Jangtse and I am from Gaden Shartse. Both colleges make up Gaden Monastery. While I was in the monastery, I did not have a personal relationship with Geshe Tsultrim, neither did I interact with him. However, because we were in the same monastery, I did see him here and there. I have friends who are his students and it is through them that I learnt more about Geshe Tsultrim.

Geshe Tsultrim used to live in a small house in Gaden Jangtse Monastery, with a tiled roof that used to leak from time to time. He had a very simple kitchen and a simple bedroom. He spent his entire day teaching to his students, who numbered in the hundreds. He was one of the Geshes from Gaden Jangtse who was always busy giving classes, from early in the morning, through the afternoon and into the evening. And he was very passionate about teaching classes because he wanted to disseminate the Buddha’s teachings to the younger generation before he passes away.

He is extremely passionate and a very good teacher. He is a teacher that was extremely patient when we were in Gaden, as he was well known to answer questions to the best of his ability and gave classes over and over again, expecting nothing back in return. His students used to go to his house in order to receive teachings from him and they noticed that he lived in a very simple, very monk-like manner, and his sole focus was to educate the younger monks.

Geshe Tsultrim was born in Kham, Tibet and became a monk at the age of 12, enrolling at Gaden Jangtse Monastery. Completing the study of all the divisions of Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy, he was awarded the highest degree of Geshe Lharampa. He also received an Acharya (Masters) degree at the Varanasi Sanskrit University in India. Furthermore, he gained qualifications in Vajrayana Buddhism after studying for one year at Gyume Tantric College. Geshe Tsultrim teaches at many Buddhist temples and monasteries in India, Tibet, Europe and North America. He has been responsible for the education of many monks, guiding them from a young age to maturity. Geshe Tsultrim is a very dedicated and compassionate teacher. The hundreds of students in Gaden Jangtse were very appreciative of him and due to his teachings they received their Geshe degrees. He was basically one of the pillars of education in Gaden Jangtse Monastery when I was there. I repeat, he was one of the pillars of education. What is a pillar? A pillar is something that holds up the roof of the house, and because it holds up the roof, the building becomes a house. If the pillars collapse, the roof falls down and we would not have a house, we would not be able to live in it. So, he was one of the pillars. Geshe Tsultrim was requested numerous times to travel to foreign countries, but he refused to go. He did not want to neglect his students. Geshe Tsultrim is not interested in money, neither is he interested in fame. Instead, he lives very simply and this is his general reputation. He never involved himself in politics, he never involved himself with petty things. Whenever you saw him, he would be attending pujas and meditations, or was giving classes. He basically engaged in the actions of a monk, especially an educated monk. So, Geshe Tsultrim of Gaden Jangtse Monastery had a very excellent reputation of being a learned monk and a scholar of the highest degree. And on top of that, he was extremely caring towards his students and very caring towards the spread of Buddhadharma.

However, when the ban against the practice of Dorje Shugden came along, we heard something that was quite heart-breaking. We heard that the monastery as a whole had demanded him to give up his Dorje Shugden practice. Can you imagine? Another very great teacher who does Dorje Shugden, another great debate master, another great logician, another great scholar who can think through whether Dorje Shugden is good or bad chose to practice Dorje Shugden. Scholars can see the good and bad, they can debate it out in their minds, they are like scientists. A scientist collects data, he examines it, he thinks about it, he debates with his colleagues about it and he arrives at a solid conclusion. That is exactly what a Geshe does. A Geshe takes various phenomenon within samsara, looks at it, gathers all the information about it and contemplates on it. He debates things through with his colleagues and arrives at a conclusion. This can include if the phenomenon is part of samsara and creates suffering, or if it does not create suffering; if this type of phenomenon is real; if it is something we grasp at or something that is not real and we are gasping at nothing. That is exactly what a Geshe does. A Geshe is a scientist, except a Geshe is a scientist of the mind. A Geshe takes something within samsara and examines it to see if it has an inherent reality or not, whether it is real of not. So, he was asked to give up Dorje Shugden practice, and he would not. He did not give up his Dorje Shugden practice because his lama gave it to him. As a result, it became very bad for people to go get teachings from him because then others would say that they were collaborating with a Dorje Shugden practitioner, that they were supporting a Dorje Shugden practitioner. Therefore, a lot of his students were forced not to be able to go to his teachings. There were some very naughty people who threw rocks at his house, broke his windows, and asked him to leave. Can you imagine a great teacher like him who was of benefit to the monastery for 20-30 years, through his giving of teachings, had his windows broken because people were throwing stones just because he would not give up Dorje Shugden practice?

The Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. Click to enlarge or click here for more high resolution downloads.

When people started throwing rocks at his house and breaking his windows, some of his close students requested him to leave for his safety. This great scholar, a pure monk who gave his time educating others in the monastery was told to leave the monastery completely. This I know for a fact. Of course, his students were heartbroken, Geshe Tsultrim himself was heartbroken. Where would he go? His home was the monastery, so where could he go?

Through one way or another, I do not know the details, he was invited to Austria, to stay in Tashi Rabten Monastery. So, he immigrated to Austria and he is safe there now, giving teachings. He is free from people throwing rocks at him or scorning him. He is not the type of Geshe that is outspoken, but he is firm in his practice. I know he is very firm in his practice. He is firm in whatever he does because he has that kind of character and reputation in the monastery. When Geshe Tsultrim decides to do something, he goes all the way with it. Geshe Tsultrim is a veritable and high level scholar of Gaden, and a pure monk. So, I know Geshe Tsultrim by reputation.

Geshe Tsultrim pictured on the left

Geshe Tsultrim pictured on the left

In the monastery he was not a political person, he was not a person that spoke out. He was a person that was quiet and engaged in his meditations. That is what his students told me. In between teachings he was always in meditation, he was always in his room, reciting prayers and doing meditation.

I do not have the honour or can say that I have a personal relationship with Geshe Tsultrim. But because we all lived in the monastery, everybody knows of everybody else’s reputation. And reputation is based on repetition. I repeat, reputation is based on repetition. When you do something enough times and people see it, they talk about it, and when they talk about it, they share it, and that becomes your reputation. So if you are someone that always tells the truth, gets your work done, are enthusiastic, are a pleasure to work with, and do your work in a way that benefits other people, when you do that over and over, it becomes repetitive. When you do that enough, it becomes your reputation.

Geshe Tsultrim

Similarly, if you lie, if you do not do your work well, you are difficult, you are arrogant, you always make excuses, you always do not finish things well, and you do that repetitively, over and over, when you do it enough, people will talk about it. Then when people talk about it, due to your repeating of it, it becomes your reputation. So, repetition becomes reputation.

Geshe Tsultrim has a reputation, from his time in the monastery, of being a great scholar, devoted to his students, devoted to the Buddhadharma, hardworking, a simple monk, very poor and only concerned with educating others. This was told to me by his students personally. I am happy to share this with all of you about this wonderful, kind and learned Geshe Tsultrim. Currently he is in good health and continues to teach.

History of Gaden Monastery

Gaden Monastery is one of the six main monasteries of the Gelug lineage. The others are Sera, Drepung, Tashi Lhunpo, Kumbum and Labrang Monasteries. Gaden Monastery was founded by the Tibetan Buddhist reformer Lama Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa in 1409. It is a monastic university, located in central Tibet. Sera and Drepung Monasteries are also located in the same area. Gaden Monastery consists of two colleges, Jangtse (or North Peak) and Shartse (or East Peak).

Gaden Monastery in Tibet

Gaden Monastery in Tibet

Over the last 600 years, Gaden Monastery has produced many erudite Geshes, teachers and meditation masters. At its peak, Gaden housed more than 5,000 monks. After the passing of Lama Tsongkhapa in 1419, his preserved body was entombed within a silver and gold encrusted reliquary stupa by his students at Gaden.

In order to continue his legacy, the office of the Gaden Tripa or Gaden Throne-holder was created. This position effectively makes the occupant the emissary of Lama Tsongkhapa on earth. In order to inherit Lama Tsongkhapa’s legacy of spreading the Buddhadharma, chosen candidates are either the Sharpa Choje (the Abbot Emeritus of Gyuto Higher Tantric College) or the Jangtse Choje (the Abbot Emeritus of Gyume Lower Tantric College).

During turmoil in 1959, Gaden Monastery was completely destroyed, including Lama Tsongkhapa’s reliquary. Lama Tsongkhapa’s holy body was burned but his skull and some ashes were saved from the fire. Fortunately, re-building of the monastery started to take place in the 1980s.

Following the turmoil, a great number of Tibetans, both lay and ordained, entered into exiled in India. As a result, Gaden Monastery with its two colleges was re-established in the Tibetan settlement near Mundgod, Karnataka State, India and continues to be the cradle of many great Buddhist scholars and masters.

Venerable Geshe Tsultrim from Gaden Jangtse Monastery

(Adapted from http://www.meditationtsongkhapa.org/ven-geshe-tsultrim-en.html)

Geshe Tsultrim pictured on the left

Geshe Tsultrim

I feel honoured to learn about such a great teacher. I cannot even fathom how much difficulty he must have encountered, not ever.
I hope that he is well and happy, surrounded by devoted students who know how fortunate they are to have him, a person who has managed to keep doing so much and give so much.
Thank you for this post. Inspired.

Thank you Rinpoche and Kechara blog team for compiling and sharing on this article to bring us more wisdom and blessings through the biography of Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin with His many selfless and unwavering deeds that benefited hundreds of students in Gaden Jangtse Monastery. The very facts of hundreds of students in Gaden Jangtse were able to receive their Geshe degrees because of receiving the teachings from Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin with much appreciation. With only pure motivations in His mind to give teachings to hundreds of His students and not to neglect His students by refusing to go abroad, it earned Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin as one of the pillars of educations in Gaden Jangtse Monastery.

After learning about Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin has spent much of His time and hard work to educate and give teachings to many students, yet Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin was asked to leave the monastery with His house windows were broken because He did not give up and continue to practise Dorje Shugden firmly. How on earth there is such an unjust and ill-treated manner being set onto someone who is so compassionate and kind to benefit many people through the highest form of giving, which is teaching the Buddhadharma? I truly believe that every reader of this article will feel sad similarly because of the negative effect after the ban of Dorje Shugden was officially announced.

May the ban of Dorje Shugden will be lifted soonest possible to allow for religious freedom, bring more peace to mankind and end the sufferings and pain endured by many Dorje Shugden practitioners. No one should be penalized because of one’s religion practice that brings no harm to any living being.

    Humbly with folded hands,

A dedicated and compassionate teacher, Venerable Geshe Tsultrim , gathers strength from distress, and grows brave by reflection. Loyalty and devotion keeps him going even though he were asked to give up Dorje Shugden practice. With his general reputation as a respected, dedicated , hard working , kind and learned teacher ,he is appreciated by many hundred monks . A scholar who cares more for his students than himself who lead a very simple life, cares towards the spreading of Buddhadharma and nothing else. He turned down invitation to go abroad to teach. He has been responsible for the education of many monks, guiding them from a young age to maturity.Venerable Geshe Tsultrim has benefited many through his teachings.
Thank you Rinpoche and writers team for this wonderful sharing.

Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for sharing another very inspiring article and on Geshe Tsultrim’s integrity and unwavering steadfastness to keep his Dorje Shugden practice to benefit others despite of the adversity he went through.Truly to be admired and respected of Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin for his bravery ????

  6. Chris on Dec 29, 2018 at 1:36 am

Thank you, Rinpoche and the blog team to share with us the story of this pure monk who chooses to stay true to his practice and speak the truth about Dorje Shugden. The Dorje Shugden ban really shows us who are the real practitioners and who are not practising real Dharma. When the ban was announced, many monks choose to be politically correct and only some chose to keep their samaya clean by continuing to practice the practice that their guru had given them.

Many chose to keep quiet but still practice Dorje Shugden and only a few are willing to stand up and defend the practice. Those who chose to voice out will be labelled a traitor or Chinese spy because they are thought to be against His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The instruction from the god-king of Tibet is to be followed without any disagreement.

Hence, when Venerable Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin chose to practice Dorje Shugden regardless of the ban, he was treated very badly by the community around him. He was forced to leave his own monastery in the end. Pure monks like him are very rare to come by because of the courage and determination for someone living in the Tibetan community to disagree with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the Dorje Shugden ban.

I would say that Geshe Tsultrim is a very kind and is a person that is willing to teach Dharma. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article

  8. graceleong on Dec 28, 2018 at 6:04 pm

Geshe Tsultrim was unwavering in his steadfastness and devotion to the Dorje Shugden practice given to him by his Guru. This virtue stands as a great teaching and example to the other practitioners of the Dharma.
When the Ban was enforced, some of the DS practitioners chose to practice secretly, whereas, sadly there were also those who “gave up”! It’s definitely very challenging if you live amongst those who stand against you and worse abuse physically and verbally on something you hold sacred!
How does one hold on when the walls around you are collapsing and having to risk your life too. Most will crumble and succumb to the circumstances that are right before us. It takes immense faith and courage to overcome such challenges. Geshe has shown us it can be done. Geshe did it ! He stood firm ! And now he can continue his passion to practice Dorje Shugden and share the Dharma with many others.
May Geshe live long to continue to teach the Dharma to benefit many.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this story. Thank you Rinpoche for standing steadfast in your practice that has benefitted many and will benefit many more !!

    Dear Rinpoche,

I’m glad that Venerable Geshe Tsultrim is safe now and able to teach and spread BuddhaDharma unobstructed, especially to the younger monks. From the video above, Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin looks healthy still.

Just like Rinpoche has mentioned, a high caliber, debater and a person with great knowledge like Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin would have known what should be practiced and what should be abandoned. They are the ones who have undergone vast and and extensive monastic studies that take years or even decades to complete! I mean, at least they must have known what’s right and wrong. They are trained to think on their own by using logic and various means to debate and come into conclusion on whether a practice should be practiced or otherwise. It is with great responsibility that they continue to disseminate pure BuddhaDharma so that pure teachings of Buddha is here to stay. Without people who subjected themselves with rigourous studies, practices and continue to turn the Wheel of Dharma, then BuddhaDharma will be gone.

Thanks to people like Geshe Tsultrim Tenzin who bravely continuing the practice that His Lama has kindly bestowed upon Him. I also thank Rinpoche for continuously giving stories and information about Dorje Shugden tirelessly, to dispel the doubt that we have on the issue of Dorje Shugden and to give support to those who have chosen to continuing practice Dorje Shugden. I gained a great deal of knowledge about many things through Rinpoche’s teaching, especially the Tibetan and Dorje Shugden issues in this blog, and that I also found some courage to practice Dorje Shugden. Thank you Rinpoche.

The concept of rebirth has a long association with Buddhism. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to the teaching that the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called saṃsāra. One will begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. What they are reborn as depends on their actions in their previous life rather kamma. As a Buddhist we should believe in rebirth but still many people don’t . Buddha taught us that choices of rebirth make a difference and can shape many lifetimes. Buddhists believe that nothing that exists is permanent and everything will ultimately cease to be. There is a belief in rebirth

Against the odds two inspiring nuns fought all the way to become ordained, fighting for their rights to practice Buddhism . Interesting read of how they went through , bringing equality for women in Thailand. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged female monks, have been defying the tradition getting ordained overseas, in Sri Lanka or India. Buddhist women have been fighting for years for equality and social acceptance in Thailand. They just can’t be ordained by Thai monks. Ven. Dhammananda, 68 year old former university lecturer and activist became Thailand’s first Theravadin bhikkhuni after going the odds. Inspiring read biography on Ven. Dhammananda and Ven. Dr. Lee. They had gone through great hardships, discrimination and against the many odds in bringing equality to women in Buddhism in Thailand.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great inspiration post.

The unseen things are spiritual realities that are eternal and invisible to our physical eye. There are many forces and phenomena that are not visible to the naked eye. There are many things that humans cannot see yet there are some could see. For what is can be seen is only. Things do exist even we can’t see, believing their existence is our choice. Things that we can’t see in the world opens up a curiosity and exploration by some. Whether through scientific inquiry, or spiritual exploration, the pursuit of knowledge about the unseen can lead to profound insights about ourselves and the universe.
Malacca City is the historic capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in Malaysia serving as a link between east and west for over 500 years. Famous for breath-taking sights with rich heritage, ancient dark culture and history with many old centuries buildings with an interesting past and a colourful ghost story. For that reason alone it is worth visiting as is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its well-preserved historical center. There’s many historical mansions been passed down generation to generations and with many ghostly sighting by the locals and visitors. There’s the reason many unseen beings loitering and attached to these places. Such an interesting and incredibly creepy watching the video in this blog host by Li Kim. Li Kim had done a great work all along with her team to share with readers about our historic Malacca .
Thank you Rinpoche and Li Kim for this sharing.

Vajrayogini symbolizes the wisdom of all enlightened beings and embodies the impulse of inspiration that drives the Buddhas to attain the perfect enlightenment. Vajrayogini is one of the most effective practices for people today. We can make offerings such as gold or jewel offerings and so on. The offering of gold helps us to collect merits, spiritual attainments, gain a deeper connection to Vajrayogini. It also creates the causes to attain a Buddha’s body.
Make Offerings to Vajrayogini in Kechara Forest Retreat at Bentong is such an meritorious way for us to collect merits. All thanks to our Guru having conceptualised the idea of having a statue of Vajrayogini for everyone . Recitation of Vajrayogini mantra can be a powerful tool for self-transformation, healing and liberation from samsara.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing with details explanation .

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this insightful article. Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way. What ever matter to us at the time of death is nothing. In the end, it’s not the years in our life that count it’s what you leave behind that matters. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. Learning Dharma and practicing dharma is the our choice that’s matter. Some of the key points to take notes, read, study the Lam Rim and apply it, engage in Sadhana daily and consistently. No one will help us at the moment of death but ourselves. Spiritual practicing is the best choice.

Well the size of Buddha statues in Tibetan Buddhism is important because it represents the Buddha’s immense ability and vast knowledge. Hence the Buddha statues hold the symbol of satisfaction within, peace and happiness. They are a symbol of inspiration for every human being. When we focus on the Buddha statues, it gives us inner peace that our mind, our heart and our soul gets enlightened.
We have are so fortunate seeing and circumambulating where the 9-foot Dorje Shugden statue and with 500 mantra stones engraved with Dorje Shugden’s sacred mantra. As Rinpoche had said before the bigger and more Buddha statues helps in planting seeds of enlightenment in people’s mind-streams. It also help us to generate as much merit and purify as much karma as possible. Merely by seeing all those big statues at Kechara Forest Retreat is a blessing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

The 4th Tagpu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub, most commonly known as Tagpu Dorje Chang, was a highly accomplished yogi Highly attained lama who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas and even travel astrally to receive direct teachings from them. His recognised line of incarnations stem all the way back to the 14th Century. He is generally regarded as such amongst Gelug lineage holders. He spent most of his time in a hermitage located above Sera Monastery, gave teachings and transmitted many vital practices and lineages to his foremost student Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Besides receiving the complete instructions of Dorje Shugden’s practice, Tagpu Dorje Chang had many other mystical experiences throughout his lifetime. Interesting read biography of a highly accomplished mahasiddha lama.

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
