Tsem Rinpoche’s Scary Paranormal Stories
Do you really believe in the paranormal? Have you ever seen a ghost, ghoul or spectral being from the realm of the paranormal? Just because we might not be able to perceive them does not mean that they do not exist. In fact, there are many things that we cannot perceive like atoms, radio waves, electricity and so on, yet we are certain that they do exist. So how can we be so certain that the paranormal does not exist too?
Whether you believe in these inexplicable phenomena or not, spirits, ghosts and ghouls do exist and they are everywhere. Every culture on earth has some sort of folk belief for the existence of ghosts and spirits. From the American Indians to the Siberian Eskimos, each culture has their own unique take on the paranormal. When one takes into consideration how pervasive this is, then it becomes harder to deny the existence of the paranormal.
There are many examples of research into the paranormal and many of the cases have yielded results that are labelled as ‘inconclusive’. This means modern science is neither able to proof or disprove the paranormal world. After so many investigations with the same results however, this is as close as it gets to the scientific world telling us that the paranormal world does indeed exist.
The following stories are my own first-hand encounters with the paranormal world. I like to tell these tales because they offer a little valuable insight into the possibility that higher beings like Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and pure lands do exist. When spirits exist, then the higher beings must exist as well by virtue of inferential logic.
Enjoy!

1. Burning Eyes
To mark this special beginning of the blog, I have decided to share a chilling story from my late mother’s childhood as a young girl in Yugoslavia during World War 2.
Imagine a ten-year-old child coming into contact with a tall dark figure with ‘fire’ for eyes. Now, imagine what the family had to do in order to protect this child. The outcome is both surprising and enlightening.

2. The Stairs
Sometime in 1994 or 1995, I and four monks stayed in a shop lot in Grik, Perak. We were there for about two to three weeks. I shared a room with one monk and the rest slept in the other room.
Throughout our stay in this shop lot, we kept hearing footsteps walking up the stairs. These footsteps were not random, but deliberate and even rhythmic. It was as if someone who wore very hard wooden shoes was walking. And the sound came closer or became louder – as if it was approaching the room I was sleeping in. Even the other monk sharing the room with me heard these strange footsteps.
Later I learnt that the monks in the other room also heard these footsteps. One monk, in particular, had an even eerier experience. Click here to watch and find out more.

3. The Tree
My natural mother had many personal paranormal experiences.
When I visited her whilst she was living in Philadelphia, she re-told the story of how an old man would appear from a particular window every time she attempted to sleep.
When large areas of land are cleared and trees are cut down, ‘whatever’ or ‘whomever’ was previously living there may get angered, upset and/or highly disturbed. Like anyone else in distress, the old man would come to my natural mother to express his concerns when the land surrounding her home was being cleared.
He had a particular hand gesture, a particular outfit and a particular facial expression… Click here to watch and learn how to stop disturbances or unwanted visitations into your home.

4. Wenatchee
I would like to share a supernatural incident that happened to me when I was fifteen years old. While I was hitch-hiking from New Jersey to LA, I met an American-Indian guy. He told me about a spirit called Wenatchee who apparently resides on a particular mountain in Arizona. Wenatchee could foretell one’s future!
Being fascinated with Wenatchee, I got off the van and decided to head north in search for the mountain. What was weird was how the moment I got off the van, I couldn’t seem to hitch a ride again! I walked for half a day, exhausted and even walked through the pouring rain.
Slightly fed up, I made a prayer and said, “If I am supposed to meet Wenatchee, then I will get a ride towards the mountain. If I am not supposed to meet Wenatchee, turn around and head in the opposite direction, I will get a ride”.

5. The Little People
During World War I, my parents had to emigrate to Eastern Europe. They settled in Belgrade, Yugoslavia and created an idealistic life for themselves.
It was there in Yugoslavia where my mother, family and neighbours witnessed a sight only ever expected to be seen on the big blockbuster screen. She recalls how it was just before World War II when they saw these little people in their hundreds covering the entire length of the street.
The Little People could foresee things, lived underground and usually kept their identity a secret. These mystical and mythical beings had all of their belongings with them and were about to leave the country. They clearly stated their reasons for doing so, of which I disclose in the video.

6. Nun from Seremban
I once received an unusual request whilst I was in Seremban giving lectures, talks and sharing with my friends – a nun wanted to see me! During her visit, she told me that in her residence, she was not able to sleep and every single night, something in her room would open the door and close the door. This would go on the whole night. She had done many rituals to stop it but the haunting only worsened because after that, she could even feel a presence touching her!
In my experience, there is a test called a divination, where a trained person can use a divination dice to determine what’s happening in the paranormal realm. So I did the dice divination for her and I succeeded in detecting the presence which was disturbing her.
In this video, I reveal my findings and also the practice she had to do to overcome this problem. In fact, she came back to me after two weeks or so, and I asked her, “Is anyone touching you now? Is the door opening and closing any more?”

7. The Hand
One night, something happened… with all the lights on and all the fans on, I felt somebody’s hand coming through the window and touching me, but nobody was there when I looked behind!
Also, in the middle of the night when I was sleeping, somebody would rise up from the bed and walk towards me. I used to think it was my roommate, but actually, it was not! The feeling of someone’s hand on my chest pressing me down and the buzzing sound I used to hear the minute the person came near my bed was really, really weird and so freaky. And these incidents would continue every night…

8. Banging Pots
A lady was experiencing strange occurrences in her own bedroom. Whenever she tried to sleep, she would feel someone tugging at her feet… attempting to pull her.
Upon hearing her distress, I did a divination and found that there was an ‘entity’ in her house. The divination also pinpointed a practice that would help her overcome her paranormal disturbances. This being had some karmic connection with her and would not go away easily. Instead, it would fight to stay. As the power of prayers started to take effect, it would intensify its presence: pulling, pot-banging etc in an attempt to remain.
As she was practising at home, the sound of pots banging got louder and the tugging at her feet became stronger and more violent…
Did she continue her practice? What should we do upon encountering a spirit? … Generate compassion towards spirits – WHY?!

Addendum
Spirits have no definitive form. Just like human beings, some are benevolent while some are malicious. They are trapped by their karma to exist for thousands of years before taking rebirth in another existence when their karma expires. Malicious spirit can attach itself to us, causing interferences or harm such as accidents, negative dreams, and in severe cases, death.
Dorje Shugden’s practice, especially in the form of Trakze, is efficacious for overcoming negative and harmful energies. It also offers protection from other people’s negative speech, negative mantras, spells or charms as well as sudden death or ill-fated, fatal accidents. To understand more, click here.

I too believe that ghost do exist! It all started when I was seven when I saw shadow running towards me and getting under my bed. I had nightmares since seven and it would happen almost every night. I used to hear the sound of Ambulance and suddenly end up with paranormal effect. When I was thirteen we shifted our place. Many used to say that the house is haunted since someone took his own life there. I used to sleep alone in my room and I always get nightmares and paranormal effect. When it becomes night, I used to fear to go to bed ! whenever I get paranormal effect, I imagined the ‘Chorten kora’ and chanted mantras . As it happened almost every night, I am.used to it and I don’t fear much now. Whenever something like that happens, I give a thought that ghost can’t kill me and let him harm me for the night. Suddenly it all stops! With the grace of ‘Ken Cho sum’ luckily I am rarely getting nightmares and paranormal effects now. OM MANI PAMAY HU🙏🇧🇹🇧🇹🇧🇹
Whether we choose to believe in the paranormal or not, we all have to realize that there are many strange things that happen to all of us that are unexplainable. I do believe that the exist of ghost is true.
I had an experience when I was seven, my family moved into a rented house which was haunted. I was young but could remember all the strange things happened there. Ghosts are mysterious because most of us cannot see them.
When we understand this, then we should not do anything that can harm ourselves and others. The great thing about the paranormal is that pretty much anything is possible! Thanks for your thoughtful sharing.
The existing of ghost, spirits or unseen beings are every where . Its only that we could not see it. To me I do believe in paranormal and unseen beings do exist after all.The skeptics don’t believe the existence of ghosts because they cannot see them. There are many beings we cannot see but they really do exist.
Although the evidence for ghosts is based on reports, the belief in ghosts throughout history has remained widespread and persistent. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us these spooky and scary ghost stories.
Rinpoche has the most interesting paranormal posts. And they are real! Ghost is a tangible part of our lives and more evidence are being captured by modern technology. If used to be word of mouth and whether the story-teller is believable or respect enough to be taken seriously. Now, we get physical and visual proof that makes it harder to be disbelieved. Just like humans, ghosts have different characteristics and sometimes you will be disturbed by the revengeful or bad ones. Buddhism had taught the if the Karma and conditions are right, then only will we see or experience them. Before you go hunting for that proof, make sure you arm yourself with powerful protection. Lord Dorje Shudgen’s mantra is one of the best that protects and bless the beings as well as the environment. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing so many interesting stories.
In folklore, a ghost or unseen beings is the soul or spirit of a dead person or animal that can appear to the living. Science and spirituality have their own explanations somehow. The existing of ghost, spirits or unseen beings are every where . Its only that we could not see it. To me I do believe in paranormal and unseen beings do exist after all. Rinpoche’s scary and creepy paranormal stories tells more than that , they do definitely exist in this world. There are all unexplained or paranormal true creepy stories. Although the evidence for ghosts is based on reports, the belief in ghosts throughout history has remained widespread and persistent. I do enjoyed reading all of them even though I have not met or see one yet at times I can feel their existence .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us these spooky and scary ghost stories. I have always like to listen to the ghosts stories and very curious about them. Ghosts are mysterious because most of us cannot see them.
The skeptics don’t believe the existence of ghosts because they cannot see them. But we also cannot see the gravity, why do these skeptics believe what the scientists say in this case? There are many beings we cannot see but they really do exist.
I think to accept the existence of ghosts and how the ghosts become a ghost will help us think about how we live our lives. We will be less attached, we will be more aware of our own actions and we will develop more good qualities in ourselves so we don’t take rebirth as a ghost. If we think we are suffering now, can you imagine how much more suffering a ghost’s life will be? Most of them are full of anger, they are lonely and sad. They are filled with all the negative emotions. While we are still in the human form, we have to take the opportunity to practice Dharma so we don’t take rebirth in the 3 lower realms.
Dear Rinpoche,
I haven’t seen a spirit/ghost before and let’s hope not. I will be frightened to death. I’m chicken-hearted!
However, I do believe in the paranormal and yes, by using inferential logic, if we believe in the existence of Buddha, deities and their pure lands, there should be spirits, unseen beings and their dimension as well. Thank you for these creepy stories.
The ‘previous me’ won’t even want to watch it and now, it’s totally another story. At times I forced myself to watch, so as to ‘prepare’ myself seeing them in future. Just like how we can see Buddha by entering the first Bhumi.
There are many unexplained or paranormal stories but I believe they are true. There are other beings that co-exist in this realm and not all can be seen. When we understand this, then we should not do anything that can harm ourselves and others. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your own encounters in the article above.
