After recieving Vajra Yogini’s sacred initiation, what are the exact commitments we should uphold daily, monthly and for life? What are the essentials? This is very important after initiation. We must understand so we keep our words of honour we took during initiation.

The central deity is known as Chinnamasta or Dorje Neljorma Ucheyma. Both Chinnamasta (Sanskrit) and Ucheyma (Tibetan) literally mean, ‘She Whose Head is Severed’. The meaning behind her form is to show practitioners that they need to completely remove the grasping and self-identification with the “I” or the ego. Generally, the identity of the self is strongly associated with our face more than any other part of our body. We usually recognise a person when we look at a person’s face. Hence, our self-identification or ego is strongly associated with our face. To show us that this self-identification needs to be overcome on the spiritual path to enlightenment, Vajrayogini uses her ritual chopper to decapitate herself. This is symbolic of her practice eradicating the ego.
The Severed Headed Vajrayogini, as she is also known, removes all afflictive mental constructs by removing the root cause – the identification of the self, the ego. We are either attached to or averse to people and circumstances because we have an ego to please, gratify and protect. But in the grander scheme of things, this self-identification with the ‘I’ is illusory and does not really exist. Therefore, Vajrayogini reveals this ultimate truth through the dramatic decapitation of her head and at the same time is still able to live and function. She is able to live due to her direct perception of emptiness and egolessness.
Contrary to what some people might think, the eradication of the self does not destroy individualism, our personality or make us into a mindless person. In fact, the eradication of the ego makes us become a vibrant and compassionate person, someone that has greater awareness of the suffering of others. In other words, we become much warmer, kinder, forgiving, tolerant, conscientious, generous, contemplative and we are become a joy to be with. The cutting of the ego or the ‘I’ brings us towards awakening our true self, the Buddha nature within.
The Severed Headed Vajrayogini has two dakini attendants. From the trunk of her neck, there are three severed blood vessels spurting three jets of blood that flow into the mouths of her own decapitated head that she carries in her left hand and into the mouths of her two attendants. Tsem Rinpoche explained that the three jets of blood represent that her practice purifies the three psychic poisons of ignorance, hatred and desire. In turn, this leads to the attainment of the three bodies of a Buddha – the emanation body, the enjoyment body and the truth body. In other words, the severance of the ego via her tantric path leads to the purification of all delusions and ultimately, the attainment of Buddhahood itself.
The 7th Panchen Lama, Palden Tenpai Nyima is featured floating above because of his compilation of sadhanas from the ancient Sadhanamala texts. This includes a particular sadhana or collection of prayers, visualisation and mantra focused on Ucheyma. Incidentally, Dorje Shugden in many of his previous lives was a lineage master of the Vajrayogini tantras as well. These previous lives include the likes of the Mahasiddha Naropa and Tsarchen Losel Gyatso. The Lord and Lady of the Charnel Ground, known as Citipati, are one of the main protectors of the Vajrayogini Tantra.
Last of all, the ascetic meditator engaging in his devotional practices towards Ucheyma in the cemetery represents the ideal environment for tantric practice because such environments invoke deep renunciation towards worldly affairs and attachments. All Buddhist traditions advocate meditating on the bones of the deceased because it reminds us of our mortality and hence, we develop revulsion towards the transient nature of worldly or ordinary existence.

Severed Headed Vajrayogini is surrounded by some of her other forms, including Naro Kacho, two forms of Maitri Kacho, Sukhasiddhi and Vajravarahi. These forms of Vajrayogini are more commonly practised compared to Severed Headed Vajrayogini and are prevalent in most Tibetan Buddhist lineages. Though they may look different, all forms are indivisible from her true nature and all her practices can lead practitioners to enlightenment. Naro Kacho arose from a vision beheld by the Mahasiddha Naropa, Maitri Kacho from a vision beheld by Maitripa, and Indra Kacho from a vision beheld by Indrabodhi. The Lord and Lady of the Charnel Ground, known as Citipati, are one of the main protectors of the Vajrayogini Tantra.
Last of all, Dorje Shugden is a protector with special affinity with Vajrayogini practitioners because he arose from an incarnation lineage that includes Naropa and Tsarchen Losel Gyatso who practised and proliferated her Tantra.

Vajrayogini is a female tantric Buddha and she has many forms that are derived from various lineages. She mainly embodies the fully enlightened female (shakti) aspect of a Buddha. She belongs to the Mother Tantra classification, which refers to her practice concentrating on the wisdom aspect of the path to Buddhahood. She is also the principal dakini, the compassionate female guides and nurturers of tantric meditation who lead practitioners to enlightenment. In the thangka, the main figure in the middle is Naro Kechari as she arose from the pure vision of the Mahasiddha Naropa.
In Anuttara (Highest) Yoga Tantra, principal dakinis normally appear in union with a male consort and this can be seen in the cases of deities such as Guhyasamaja, Hevajra, and Kalachakra. In the case of Vajrayogini, she is the principal female Buddha of the Chakrasamvara Tantra and therefore, she is normally in union with Heruka Chakrasamvara. Furthermore, Vajrayogini is also considered a Vajradakini, who are yidams or meditational deities in their own right. Their practices have evolved from the main practices of their consorts, simplifying the otherwise complicated original practice by reducing it to a single-deity meditation without sacrificing the main benefits and features of the original. Hence, Vajradakini practices such as Vajrayogini and Nairatmya are derived from the original Chakrasamvara Tantra and Hevajra Tantra respectively.
In essence, Vajrayogini is known as “Sarvabuddha-dakini” or the Dakini Who is the Essence of all Buddhas. Her mantra is known as the King of All Mantras as it has the most powerful ability to bless us with spiritual attainments even without any visualisation or meditation. There are 11 Yogas in the generation stage of her practice and a few which have the power of transforming ordinary actions like sleeping, waking and ordinary daily tasks into a collection of merits. Ultimately, her Tantra offers salvation for ordinary practitioners at death with her special promise of guiding practitioners towards Kechara, or the Paradise of the Dakinis, in which we can continue deep practices to become a Buddha without fear, obstacles and interruptions.
Within Vajrayogini practice, soliciting the blessings of the lama and the lineage master are of paramount importance in order for our practice to bear results. Hence, the lama is visualised as the red Vajradharma with arms crossed at the heart, holding the vajra and bell. The lineage masters are visualised as Hero Vajradharma, holding a damaru and skullcup while cradling a khatvanga. Aside from the main Naro Kechari form, Vajrayogini also appears in the form of Maitri Kechari, who is known as Flying Vajrayogini, and arose from the vision of Maitripa. Another common form is known as Indra Kechari, or Vajravarahi, who arose from the vision of Indrabodhi.
Last of all, Dorje Shugden is a Dharma protector with a special affinity with Vajrayogini practitioners. This is because he himself arose from an incarnation lineage that includes the likes of Naropa, the progenitor of Naro Kechari practice, and Tsarchen Losel Gyatso who had practised and proliferated her Tantra and is listed as one the lineage masters invoked upon every day by Vajrayogini practitioners.

The Dākiṇī with the Essence of all Buddhas, Vajrayoginī
Her practice includes methods to end the otherwise repetitive states of Bardo and rebirth, by transforming the process into a journey, which may lead to full enlightenment. In preparation for which, Vajrayoginī further offers the omnipresent ability to reconstruct the nature of the most, mundane everyday experiences, such that they may reveal higher destinations, via the spiritual paths she may choose to reveal. [1] Vajrayoginī being defined as, “The Dākiṇī who is the Essence of all Buddhas”, [2] is amplified by scholar Miranda Shaw when she implied that this deity is no less than, the supreme nature of the very Tantric pantheon. No male Buddha, including her divine consort, Heruka-Cakrasaṃvara, further advances her in metaphysical implications. [3]
Vajrayoginī’s sādhanā originates from India circa 10/12th C, [4] when summoned as Heruka-Cakrasaṃvara’s Yab-Yum consort [5], with later forms including Vajrayoginī as “Solitary Hero”, she may be visualized with the deep red complexion of a 16-year-old female, whose stance is nude amidst a blazing fire of pristine awareness and most exalted wisdom. Her head is adorned with a crown of five skulls and upon her forehead, the third eye of wisdom is set vertically (represented here by an auspicious jewel). She drapes a necklace of fifty dried human skulls and is depicted with her traditional vajra-handled knife in her right hand; with a blood filled kapala in her left, she drinks with upturned head while looking above, toward the pure realm of Khechara. This seemingly gruesome gesture is actually symbolic of her clear light in great joy, known as “mahasukha” (the great bliss), [6] [7] thus the blood she drinks may be offered to us all as if a fine wine.
Resting on the left shoulder is a Katvanga staff as she stands tall with her two feet, trampling the bodies of red Kalaratri and black Bhairava (with heads bending backward), representing the embodiment of illusion and ego-awareness. The composition, all of which rests above a sun disc and multicolored lotus pedestal, she is rendered here after a thankga of Naropa Tradition (passed down from a special teaching of the Indian Mahasiddha Naropa). Vajrayoginī herself may be classified as the personification of “Wisdom” or “Mother” and her practice originates with the Chakrasamvara Cycle of Tantras, which is one of the five principal tantric practices of the Sakya School, although found in one form or another, she is included in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. [8]
Vajrayoginī also appears in versions from the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, with one popular system having the practitioner visualize themselves as Vajrayoginī, as such, their guru taking the form of Milarepa. [9] Thus depicted above the central deity here we see Milarepa on our right, with his great Guru Marpa left (whose guru was Naropa himself, and other great Indian masters). [10]
Vajrayoginī is a simplified, single most form of the female Buddha, who is otherwise a collection of alternate forms. From her sādhanās she is visualized in English terms as “Vajra Sow”, “Wrathful Lady”, “Fierce Black One”, and other such similar manifestations of female energy found in numerous iconographic renderings and traditions. Each feature of Vajrayoginī’s visualization conveys important spiritual concept. For example, her three eyes indicate her ability to see all (past, present and future); her red-colored body symbolizes the blazing of her ”inner fire”, and the curved knife she wields, demonstrates the power to sever the delusions and obstacles of her followers and of all living beings. [11]

The current form of Naro Kacho Vajra Yogini appeared to the Indian Mahasiddha Naropa after he meditated intensely on her practice inside a cave. He beheld her glorious form in a vision. This unique form became known as Naropa’s Vajra Yogini or Naro Kacho, as it had never existed before. Later, in Tibet, His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche also had visions of Vajra Yogini. His vision differed slightly from the vision of her that Naropa beheld. In the original Naro Kacho form, Vajra Yogini looks towards her pure land named Kechara. However in Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche’s vision, she looked straight at him, symbolic of the deity empowering him to bestow her practice to many people in order to benefit them. The practice of Vajra Yogini belongs to the Highest Yoga Tantra classification that leads to tremendous inner transformation and can even grant enlightenment within just one lifetime.
Vajra Yogini has many different forms and in each of these forms, the positioning of her sacred body, the various implements she holds and the expressions on her face have profound meaning into various aspects of enlightenment. The implements she holds, the expressions on her face, and her body symbolise specific aspects of enlightenment that suit people during a particular time and place according to their karma. So, therefore, Vajra Yogini’s pose, forms and emanations change over time in order to suit different karmically-connected practitioners. It will keep changing because enlightenment is fluid, compassionate and skilful. To gaze upon Vajra Yogini is to look at a complete ‘roadmap’ to enlightenment as every aspect of her body is a manifestation of enlightenment. Therefore to have her form, picture, painting or statue is very blessed. We should make offerings to her daily diligently.
After the great Mahasiddha Naropa had served his guru the Mahasiddha Tilopa for 12 years, Tilopa conferred the Vajra Varahi (another form of Vajra Yogini) initiation with full instructions unto Naropa. Then, Naropa diligently meditated on Vajra Varahi and had a vision of her, and when she appeared to him directly, she appeared in the form of Vajra Yogini. Normally, when he engaged in the Vajra Yogini (Vajravarahi) practice, she was in the form of facing him directly, holding a skull cup and a curved flaying knife in front of her heart. One leg was up and one leg was down as in a dancing pose. That was the form of Vajra Yogini that he had meditated on to gain the highest attainments.
After he had meditated on Vajra Varahi and gained visions of her, she appeared to him in a different form, with her face looking up at Kechara Paradise instead of facing him directly. Her left hand holding the skullcup was thrust in the air and her right hand holding the curved flaying knife, also known as a cemetery knife was facing down at sentient beings or samsara to help beings cut their bonds to suffering. Her left leg was bent, and her right extended while standing in a pose of looking towards Kechara Paradise like she is about to take off there. This form signifies she will take you there and out of suffering. That form of Vajra Yogini became special and that was called Naro Kacho or the Vajra Yogini of Naropa. This Naropa’s Vajra Yogini was initiated to the Nepalese Pamtingpa brothers and they meditated diligently and this tradition of Naropa’s Vajra Yogini just became prevalent and took off from there. Naropa started initiating his other disciples as well into this special form of Vajra Yogini and she became known as Naropa’s Vajra Yogini till this day and it is considered a highly blessed lineage. That is the lineage we have now and most prevalent.
She is looking up because this Naropa’s Vajra Yogini is indicating she will lead her practitioners to her Kechara Paradise within one lifetime if you are diligent in her practice. Realizing enlightenment is harder for people in today’s world and needs more time during Kaliyuga degenerate period, she leads you to her paradise where you can practice undisturbed to Buddha-hood.
In this brilliant artwork, what you see is the Mahasiddha Naropa having a direct vision of Vajra Yogini. It’s the first time she has appeared to Naropa in this form. This form is associated with Naropa. Prior to Naropa, this form of Vajra Yogini did not exist. She in this vision is initiating him into this form (Naro Kacho) of herself indicating this form will be most efficacious now according to our karmic period. In the background, you will see a cave with a light in it because when Naropa used to meditate in that cave, it is said that from his body would emit a light and people could see it from afar. You can also see animals surrounding Vajra Yogini, they can feel her compassion and her great blessings and they are at peace around her.
Vajra Yogini brings peace, love, compassion, wisdom and freedom to everyone who practices her incredibly powerful tantra. Therefore, this artwork is a very beautiful representation of the time when Naropa had a vision of Vajra Yogini in this form for the first time and it is now known as Naropa’s Vajra Yogini. This artwork was offered to me as a gift from a very talented artist. I deeply appreciate this piece of visual spirituality very much.
From Tsem Rinpoche: Every person who has Maha-anuttaratantra empowerments (Eg. Heruka, Guhyasamaja, Yamantaka, Vajra Yogini, Chittamani-Tara, Kalacakra, Hevajra, Gyalwa Gyatso Chenresig, etc) should keep a copy of this on their shrine or prayer book. These are all the ritual items tantric practitioner must keep by commitment. If it is in picture form, it is alright also.
What I never will understand, may be Tsem you can say something about it:
I desire the Tantric Praxis of VY and know and see it is possible to attain buddhahood in one life. She is so strong- unbelievable and true. I train to see me as VY in every moment I think about her (I’ve got several initiations) I train to see everything as pure, pure pure and Buddha. And suddenly I shall clean myself with Vajrasattva Mantras? Logical and after all science of self prophesy: if we see us as not pure this thought will never change until we change the thought we are pure. Why shall we train to see us as not pure to make Vajrasattva Mantras? It makes no sense in my eyes.
We don’t practice the higher teachings because of pride, for knowledge for fame, to go to the next level and etc we practice something like the tantras in conjunction of bodhicitta. Bodhicitta is the mind that wants to become a Buddha so that they are full enlightened and have all the skills, wisdom and insight to helping and saving sentient beings.

Thank you very much for sharing this information regarding the commitments after receiving Vajrayogini’s Sacred Initiation. I think that one would be fortunate to have even the oppurtunity to recive the Vajrayogini Initiation from Rinpoche. I hope that one day I may have that honour.
The preliminary practice for higher tantra initiation such as prostration, Vajrasattva, light offering, mandala offering, Guru Yoga are difficult, but the post initiation practice require even more commitment!!
But of course if we can keep the commitments and hold the vows, we will have the highest achievement which is gain enlightenment.
Hope that everyone of us would receive the highere tantra initiation in the future.

The Kechara Forest Retreat is a unique holistic retreat centre focused on the total wellness of body, mind and spirit. At Kechara Forest Retreat, we are committed to give back to society through instilling the next generation with universal positive values such as kindness and compassion.
Venerable Ajahn Chah was a Thai Buddhist monk, an influential teacher of the Buddhadhamma and a founder of two major monasteries in the Thai Forest Tradition. Been a man of great wisdom was respected and loved in his own country Thailand. He was also instrumental in establishing Theravada Buddhism in the West and a revered monk whose life and teachings continue to this day. He was undoubtedly one of the most revered Buddhist teachers in the modern era. His teachings were rooted in direct experience and presented in simple language. He was an exemplary teacher who inspired deep confidence and enthusiasm amongst his followers who came from around the world. Ajahn Chah remained bedridden until his death at the age of 73. DUKKAR (SITATAPATRA) or White Parasol is known for her powers to protect against sorcery, spirit harm, evil spells,malicious intents and so forth. She is white in colour because the principal means by which she accomplishes protection is the enlightened energy of pacification. She is a form of Tara and is well recognized throughout Tibet, India ,Nepal and the Himalayan region. Whoever practices her mantra will gain protection against supernatural danger and witchcraft.
All thanks to the kindness of the monks from Gaden Monastery Kecharians from Puja team have conducted a Dukkar Puja and learned the various traditional pujas as well.

The possibility of extraterrestrial life has always fascinated humans and we’ve been searching for alien life for some time now.No extraterrestrial life has yet been conclusively detected. We always wondered if there is life beyond Earth in space. With all of the countless billions of stars and possible planets and moons in space, we do think that under the right conditions, life can exist elsewhere in space. However, there is no evidence for this. Extraterrestrial life has never been discovered, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. I do believe of their existence. Only a small fraction of our galaxy has been studied and the question of whether aliens exist is something scientists have been trying to understand, explore and figure out for a long time. Despite decades of peering at and listening to planets around other stars, scientist still don’t have a concrete answer to the question of whether we are alone in the universe. Scientists are have been using new methods to reveal that we’re not alone in the universe and that alien life must be out there.
Reading this interesting blog will definitely opened our eyes as one day we could possible see them , rather than just listening their voice . Since in a few occasion they the aliens have made communication contact with human.

The Karmapa heads the 900 years old Karma Kagyu sect, popularly called the Black Hat sect of the Tibetan Buddhism. The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, a Buddhist school in Tibet. The Karma Kagyu lineage is the most influential of the Tibetan Buddhist lineages outside Tibet studied and practiced all around the world. The teachings of the Kagyu lineage have been passed down for nearly a thousand years within Tibet. As one of Tibetan Buddhism’s four main lineages, the Kagyu School is especially known for its profound meditative practices, its tradition of strict retreat, and the countless awakened individuals it has produced. The teachings of the Kagyu lineage stretch back to ancient India, having a long history behind it.
H E Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, a Karma Kagyu Lama, recently sent an open letter to HH Dalai Lama on behalf of the thousands or millions of Kagyu practitioners. This letter mentioned various points of aggressive pressure and assaults, threatening, and discrimination attributed to supporters of H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama. Finally one courage Lama speaking up how practitioners have been suffering all these while. He is the only high-ranking Tibetan Lama formally recognised both by Dalai Lama and the Chinese.
Well it seem that other Tibetan religious groups also experiencing religious discrimination ,having many similarities to the Gelup lineage. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche has dedicated his life to the preservation of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche highlighted the lack of religious freedom among the Tibetan people due to the persistent interference of their Tibetan leadership. Due to the Tibetan leadership the Karma Kagyu split so as in the Gelup lineage sufferings to the practitioners. In time to come hopefully it will resolve the disputes for the sake of Dharma.

Everyone of us have a dream house. Some might go for bigger house while some might choose a simple house far away from city lives and so forth. Living in a green mountainous place doing practices, mantras, prostrations, offerings and reading the holy dharma was a dream of our Guru Tsem Rinpoche . That’s a great idea , what a beautiful place to live without much disturbance of traffics and activities . Kechara Forest Retreat is one special place one might go for. Having a house, quiet and green environment place is definitely everyone wish. One touch of nature makes the whole world kin. Green and clean, that’s everyone dream.

We have to understand that we own nothing. Everything that surrounds us is temporary. Life is like a flowing river in which nothing stays not even our relationships, fame, riches, poverty, happiness, sorrow, disease, objects, people, troubles, problems, etc. We have to accept the true facts all things will change with time, nothing stays permanent. Let us make our future now, and let us make our time in this world meaningful doing what we have to do. Learning, practicing Dharma is a good choice to make before its too late. Do something useful for others in our life .We are all going to die, it’s just a matter of when no one knows. We can’t take along anything we have as we come into this world with nothing, we goes with nothing too.

It’s wondrous . There is so much we don’t know about the workings of our beautiful planet. Imaging a world where we could better in farming as to nature. But making Kechara Forest Retreat a spiritual sanctuary for all is amazing as mother Nature brings a sense of calmness and brings a greater sense of appreciation for life. All thanks to our Guru Tsem Rinpoche and many faithful students goes all the way up to where its today. Pastor Chia, Ms Julia Tan and Ms Li Kheng were the few who have done a fantastic job increasing yields and providing more healthy food.

Dorje Shugden is one of the important protector deities worshipped by many throughout the Tibetan Buddhism . And even many high Lamas since the time of the 5th Dalai Lama and in monasteries have had propitiated Dorje Shugden. Tibetan leadership has been exploiting their people all these years with the Dorje Shugden ban. Many families are torn apart by this ban instituted by the Tibetan Leadership.
Living in Malaysia a multi-country is a privilege , we allowed to pray what we want , having religious freedom. But not for those Tibetans living in India, Nepal and so forth who propitiate Dorje Shugden. Current days many news has created increased exposure and awareness of the plight of Dorje Shugden practitioners in the world. And it is slowly going down to history , as many Tibetans are standing up and speaking up on the unfairness and discrimination to be heard.
Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding…..quoted.
We should respect all religions and just believe in peace, kindness and harmony. Everyone has the right to choose and practise a religion. We should never judge, mistreat or hurt others just because they practice a different religion than ours. The first way we can begin to respect different forms of spirituality is to learn about them. Promoting tolerance and understanding is an important part of our life. Respecting people of other faiths allows us to foster an environment of tolerance and understanding. It helps us recognize that there are diverse perspectives and beliefs in the world. Everyone has the right to choose and practise a religion. The deep frustration felt by the Tibetan people who lack religious freedom to practice how and what they want, is beginning to surface with more and more people speaking up against the behaviour of the Tibetan leadership. Dorje Shugden practitioners face restrictions on freedom of belief, speech, assembly, and cultural identity. Every aspect of Tibetan life is under siege but until recently they could speak out about what they are facing, the more is spoken out, the more others will be aware of the issue. Reading what H E Tsem Rinpoche had said why he had to keep silent about his Protector practice of Shugden until now. Its all about guru devotion and faith in his guru. Tsem Rinpoche had explained clearly the reasons behind it. Well hopefully more and more people understand after reading this blog. Having peaceful dialogue through communication and solve the controversy issue for the sake in the preservation of the Dharma, has to be achieved.

Tibetan sky burial is a mysterious funeral practice that fascinates and sometimes intimidates people from a different cultural background. Tibetans see it as a last gift to the universe — a way to show the insignificance and the impermanence of our earthly lives. In reality sky burial, holds much greater significance. The practice demonstrates fundamental values and beliefs of Tibetan Buddhism such as reincarnation, impermanence, compassion, and non-attachment. Although it might seem brutal for some at first, yet this tradition demonstrates deep love and compassion towards all living beings and genuine concern about the earth. It’s the last act of merits and they consider them a spiritual practice that’s all about giving back to the world.
Sky burials is a funeral practice are where human corpse is placed on a mountaintop to decompose to be eaten by scavenging animals such as carrion birds.
Looking at those pictures though scary yet will remind us to train our mind and every single time in life is important spent it wisely. Nothing stays forever, its better to accept it and prepare our next life as what Tsem Rinpoche had advised us to meditate on death.

The historic first Kalachakra initiation by the young Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu held publicly in Tibet,China. Awesome over hundred thousand attended the self-initiation of the Kalachakra deity and teachings. Among them thousand monks and nuns and hundred incarnated lamas and teachers in attendance were HE the 20th Denma Gonsa Rinpoche, HE Nyitrul Rinpoche, Venerable Lama Jampa Ngodrub Rinpoche and many other High Lamas. On the first day auspicious sign appeared with shower of rain. With over thousands of people attended this initiation , it proven that the influence of the young Panchen Lama is growing and will continue to grow even more and stronger. This also proves that he is indeed the unmistaken incarnation. This definitely have a positive impact on the acceptance of Dorje Shugden’s practice. Historically, one of the main Protectors of the Panchen Lamas is Dorje Shugden and he is also the Protector of Tashi Lhunpo, the monastic seat of the Panchen Lamas.

Revisit this post again and fortunate given the opportunity to attend the initiation recently with my Dharma brothers and sisters. About thousands of people took the initiation of Avalokiteshvara, or in Tibetan Chenrezig Ngesung Kundrol recently at Kechara Forest Retreat. We are indeed very fortunate to receive the blessing from Venerable Chojila .The very first initiation of Chenrezig Ngesung Kundrol been held here. Its such an auspicious powerful event attended by many people from around Malaysia and overseas.

More than 350 years, highly attained Lamas have relied on the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden to clear obstacles and create conducive conditions for their spiritual path. Buddhist masters from the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism as such Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug . Over a period of time, the practice entered into Mongolian culture, since than Mongolia had adopted Tibetan Buddhism many hundreds of years ago. Mongolia has a long history and connection with Dorje Shugden. Even the State Oracle of Mongolia, Choijin Lama Luvsankhaidav, regarded highly of Dorje Shugden and had a special thangka commissioned for worship. Lama Luvsankhaidav even took trance of Dorje Shugden painted the importance the Mongolian people once placed on the protector.

The historic Choijin Lama Temple located in the center of Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. The Choijin Lama Temple is an architectural masterpiece of the 19th and 20th centuries at the order of the spiritual leader of Mongolian Buddhism the eighth Javzandamba Khutagt. The complex was dedicated to his younger brother, the sitting Choijin Lama, who had served as the official state oracle of Mongolia until his death. The historic temple of the Choijin Lama is an important example of Chinese-style religious architecture where the Choijin Lama would go into a trance. This temple been one of Mongolian Buddhism’s surviving links with the past with unique collection of copper and brass sculptures, scroll paintings, diverse artworks, masks engravings, and instruments used for religious ceremonies. This temple is considered one of the most beautiful temple in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia and is now a museum preserving the elaborately decorated interiors and containing a rich collection of other Mongolian Buddhist sculpture and painting.

Yes, there is a difference between Sang and Sur.
Sang is offered to the Dharma Protectors and sometimes the Yidams (meditational deities). Most Sang prayers can be recited without initiation, etc. For example, the smoke offering to Dorje Shugden, available here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/prayers-and-sadhanas/incense-offering-to-dorje-shugden.html Anyone can engage in this Sang offering.
The Sur offering, or more correctly the Tsa Sur offering is a smoke offering to the Three Jewels as well as those who have recently passed on and are in the bardo states. Such bardo beings are at the mercy of their karma, so the smoke offering is said to nourish them and alleviate some of their karma so they can take a good rebirth and not suffer as much. It’s a common practice among Tibetan Buddhists that this practice is performed during the 49 day period of a person’s passing to aid them on their journey to their next rebirth.
The offering is made by burning various types of herb incense, tsampa (roasted barley flour), butter, and other ingredients. Other types of commonly available herb incense such as sandalwood, white sage, etc., can also be added to the mix before it is burned.
The ability to make such an offering does not actually come from the smoke itself, but the practitioners ability to generate themselves as Chenresig or another type of tantric deity, usually belonging to the Kriya Tantra classification. As such in our tradition, this offering can only be performed by those with the appropriate initiation and practice conferred by a fully qualified tantric guru. Though there are many texts available nowadays elsewhere online, the method to actually make the offering should be taught directly from your guru, otherwise the offering won’t actually be effective.
For that reason, we don't provide the Tsa Sur text publiclly here on this site or share information about the practice, as it is only taught by a guru once you have received the appropriate initiation. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your question. Nice to see you back here. Yes, you can have as many Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Dharma Protectors as you wish. Some people like to keep many images, other people like to keep their altars more simple. It's entirely up to you. Traditionally speaking the Lamas and Buddhas would go in the centre, the Bodhisattvas and yidams on the left side, and Dharma protectors on the right side. But the arrangement is up to you.
On the left side, you should have a Dharma text to represent the speech of the Buddha and on the right side, you should have a stupa, to represent the mind of the Buddha. That way you have the complete set of Body (image), Speech (Dharma text) and Mind (Stupa) of the Buddha. Then it is considered to be a complete altar. I hope this helps. Thanks.

Thanks for your question. No, the mantra roll will not lose it's power or integrity if you open then. However, they are some points to remember:
> Mantras are rolled tightly like that so there more copies of the mantras for insertion purposes. And they are rolls because they are easier to insert. Mantras are also the form of the Buddhas in sound (even when written), hence Dharma texts and mantras are respected. So it you do open the roll for whatever reason, you should be careful to wrap them back tightly again.
> The second point is the yellow covering (which is usually made out of cloth), is an offering to the Buddhas. Just like adorning Buddha statues with robes and clothing is an offering. Hence, the covering should also be put back correctly and nicely on to the mantra roll.

If you wish to practice Palden Lhamo and not Dorje Shugden, that is fine. Both are enlightened Dharma Protectors, so there will not be any unfortunately circumstances. And yes, you can switch.
However, and this is the main point, once you have chosen which Protector to practice, you have to be consistent. If you are not consistent and perhaps keep switching between the two, you will not experience the most benefits from either practice. The purpose of Dharma Protector practice is to get benefits in both worldly and spiritual life to help us, however we must be consistent and commited to our practice to get the real benefits. If you would like to practice Palden Lhamo instead, that is wonderful. But it would be best to stick to Palden Lhamo's practice from now on and do it consistently.
You can take refuge in front of your altar (which would include an image), that is very much done when you can't attend the ceremonies at Dharma centres, etc. Here is Kechara, we have a service in which we take you through the Refuge ceremony only if you cannot attend our events physically. During the ceremony, you would be in front of your altar at home. You can email Care@Kechara.com if you are interested.
Other vows are different. For example the 8 Precepts need to be received in person or online for the 1st time. Then after that you can take the 8 Precepts whenever you want in front of your altar or image, as you already have the vows. Other vows, such as the layman vows, monastic ordination, Bodhisattva vows, etc, need to be received in person from someone holding those vows.

The central deity is known as Chinnamasta or Dorje Neljorma Ucheyma. Both Chinnamasta (Sanskrit) and Ucheyma (Tibetan) literally mean, ‘She Whose Head is Severed’. The meaning behind her form is to show practitioners that they need to completely remove the grasping and self-identification with the “I” or the ego. Generally, the identity of the self is strongly associated with our face more than any other part of our body. We usually recognise a person when we look at a person’s face. Hence, our self-identification or ego is strongly associated with our face. To show us that this self-identification needs to be overcome on the spiritual path to enlightenment, Vajrayogini uses her ritual chopper to decapitate herself. This is symbolic of her practice eradicating the ego.
The Severed Headed Vajrayogini, as she is also known, removes all afflictive mental constructs by removing the root cause – the identification of the self, the ego. We are either attached to or averse to people and circumstances because we have an ego to please, gratify and protect. But in the grander scheme of things, this self-identification with the ‘I’ is illusory and does not really exist. Therefore, Vajrayogini reveals this ultimate truth through the dramatic decapitation of her head and at the same time is still able to live and function. She is able to live due to her direct perception of emptiness and egolessness.
Contrary to what some people might think, the eradication of the self does not destroy individualism, our personality or make us into a mindless person. In fact, the eradication of the ego makes us become a vibrant and compassionate person, someone that has greater awareness of the suffering of others. In other words, we become much warmer, kinder, forgiving, tolerant, conscientious, generous, contemplative and we are become a joy to be with. The cutting of the ego or the ‘I’ brings us towards awakening our true self, the Buddha nature within.
The Severed Headed Vajrayogini has two dakini attendants. From the trunk of her neck, there are three severed blood vessels spurting three jets of blood that flow into the mouths of her own decapitated head that she carries in her left hand and into the mouths of her two attendants. Tsem Rinpoche explained that the three jets of blood represent that her practice purifies the three psychic poisons of ignorance, hatred and desire. In turn, this leads to the attainment of the three bodies of a Buddha – the emanation body, the enjoyment body and the truth body. In other words, the severance of the ego via her tantric path leads to the purification of all delusions and ultimately, the attainment of Buddhahood itself.
The 7th Panchen Lama, Palden Tenpai Nyima is featured floating above because of his compilation of sadhanas from the ancient Sadhanamala texts. This includes a particular sadhana or collection of prayers, visualisation and mantra focused on Ucheyma. Incidentally, Dorje Shugden in many of his previous lives was a lineage master of the Vajrayogini tantras as well. These previous lives include the likes of the Mahasiddha Naropa and Tsarchen Losel Gyatso. The Lord and Lady of the Charnel Ground, known as Citipati, are one of the main protectors of the Vajrayogini Tantra.
Last of all, the ascetic meditator engaging in his devotional practices towards Ucheyma in the cemetery represents the ideal environment for tantric practice because such environments invoke deep renunciation towards worldly affairs and attachments. All Buddhist traditions advocate meditating on the bones of the deceased because it reminds us of our mortality and hence, we develop revulsion towards the transient nature of worldly or ordinary existence.

The central deity is known as Severed Headed Vajrayogini, Chinnamasta or Dorje Neljorma Ucheyma. Both Chinnamasta (Sanskrit) and Ucheyma (Tibetan) literally mean, ‘She Whose Head is Severed’. The meaning behind her form is to show practitioners that they need to completely remove the grasping and self-identification with the “I” or the ego. Generally, the identity of the self is strongly associated with our face more than any other part of our body. We usually recognise a person when we look at a person’s face. Hence, our self-identification or ego is strongly associated with our face. To show us that this self-identification needs to be overcome on the spiritual path to enlightenment, Vajrayogini uses her ritual chopper to decapitate herself. This is symbolic of her practice eradicating the ego.
The Severed Headed Vajrayogini removes all afflictive mental constructs by removing the root cause – the identification of the self, the ego. We are either attached to or averse to people and circumstances because we have an ego to please, gratify and protect. But in the grander scheme of things, this self-identification with the ‘I’ is illusory and does not really exist. Therefore, Vajrayogini reveals this ultimate truth through the dramatic decapitation of her head and at the same time is still able to live and function. She is able to live due to her direct perception of emptiness and egolessness.
Contrary to what some people might think, the eradication of the self does not destroy individualism, our personality or make us into a mindless person. In fact, the eradication of the ego makes us become a vibrant and compassionate person, someone that has greater awareness of the suffering of others. In other words, we become much warmer, kinder, forgiving, tolerant, conscientious, generous, contemplative and we are become a joy to be with. The cutting of the ego or the ‘I’ brings us towards awakening our true self, the Buddha nature within.

These forms of Vajrayogini are more commonly practised compared to Severed Headed Vajrayogini and are prevalent in most Tibetan Buddhist lineages. Though they may look different, all forms are indivisible from her true nature and all her practices can lead practitioners to enlightenment. Naro Kacho arose from a vision beheld by the Mahasiddha Naropa, Maitri Kacho from a vision beheld by Maitripa, and Indra Kacho from a vision beheld by Indrabodhi. Vajrayogini is a female tantric Buddha and she has many forms that are derived from various lineages. She mainly embodies the fully enlightened female (shakti) aspect of a Buddha. She belongs to the Mother Tantra classification, which refers to her practice concentrating on the wisdom aspect of the path to Buddhahood. She is also the principal dakini, the compassionate female guides and nurturers of tantric meditation who lead practitioners to enlightenment. In the thangka, the main figure in the middle is Naro Kechari as she arose from the pure vision of the Mahasiddha Naropa.
In Anuttara (Highest) Yoga Tantra, principal dakinis normally appear in union with a male consort and this can be seen in the cases of deities such as Guhyasamaja, Hevajra, and Kalachakra. In the case of Vajrayogini, she is the principal female Buddha of the Chakrasamvara Tantra and therefore, she is normally in union with Heruka Chakrasamvara. Furthermore, Vajrayogini is also considered a Vajradakini, who are yidams or meditational deities in their own right. Their practices have evolved from the main practices of their consorts, simplifying the otherwise complicated original practice by reducing it to a single-deity meditation without sacrificing the main benefits and features of the original. Hence, Vajradakini practices such as Vajrayogini and Nairatmya are derived from the original Chakrasamvara Tantra and Hevajra Tantra respectively.
In essence, Vajrayogini is known as “Sarvabuddha-dakini” or the Dakini Who is the Essence of all Buddhas. Her mantra is known as the King of All Mantras as it has the most powerful ability to bless us with spiritual attainments even without any visualisation or meditation. There are 11 Yogas in the generation stage of her practice and a few which have the power of transforming ordinary actions like sleeping, waking and ordinary daily tasks into a collection of merits. Ultimately, her Tantra offers salvation for ordinary practitioners at death with her special promise of guiding practitioners towards Kechara, or the Paradise of the Dakinis, in which we can continue deep practices to become a Buddha without fear, obstacles and interruptions.
Within Vajrayogini practice, soliciting the blessings of the lama and the lineage master are of paramount importance in order for our practice to bear results. Hence, the lama is visualised as the red Vajradharma with arms crossed at the heart, holding the vajra and bell. The lineage masters are visualised as Hero Vajradharma, holding a damaru and skullcup while cradling a khatvanga. Aside from the main Naro Kechari form, Vajrayogini also appears in the form of Maitri Kechari, who is known as Flying Vajrayogini, and arose from the vision of Maitripa. Another common form is known as Indra Kechari, or Vajravarahi, who arose from the vision of Indrabodhi.
Last of all, Dorje Shugden is a Dharma protector with a special affinity with Vajrayogini practitioners. This is because he himself arose from an incarnation lineage that includes the likes of Naropa, the progenitor of Naro Kechari practice, and Tsarchen Losel Gyatso who had practised and proliferated her Tantra and is listed as one the lineage masters invoked upon every day by Vajrayogini practitioners.

The Dākiṇī with the Essence of all Buddhas, Vajrayoginī
Her practice includes methods to end the otherwise repetitive states of Bardo and rebirth, by transforming the process into a journey, which may lead to full enlightenment. In preparation for which, Vajrayoginī further offers the omnipresent ability to reconstruct the nature of the most, mundane everyday experiences, such that they may reveal higher destinations, via the spiritual paths she may choose to reveal. [1] Vajrayoginī being defined as, “The Dākiṇī who is the Essence of all Buddhas”, [2] is amplified by scholar Miranda Shaw when she implied that this deity is no less than, the supreme nature of the very Tantric pantheon. No male Buddha, including her divine consort, Heruka-Cakrasaṃvara, further advances her in metaphysical implications. [3]
Vajrayoginī’s sādhanā originates from India circa 10/12th C, [4] when summoned as Heruka-Cakrasaṃvara’s Yab-Yum consort [5], with later forms including Vajrayoginī as “Solitary Hero”, she may be visualized with the deep red complexion of a 16-year-old female, whose stance is nude amidst a blazing fire of pristine awareness and most exalted wisdom. Her head is adorned with a crown of five skulls and upon her forehead, the third eye of wisdom is set vertically (represented here by an auspicious jewel). She drapes a necklace of fifty dried human skulls and is depicted with her traditional vajra-handled knife in her right hand; with a blood filled kapala in her left, she drinks with upturned head while looking above, toward the pure realm of Khechara. This seemingly gruesome gesture is actually symbolic of her clear light in great joy, known as “mahasukha” (the great bliss), [6] [7] thus the blood she drinks may be offered to us all as if a fine wine.
Resting on the left shoulder is a Katvanga staff as she stands tall with her two feet, trampling the bodies of red Kalaratri and black Bhairava (with heads bending backward), representing the embodiment of illusion and ego-awareness. The composition, all of which rests above a sun disc and multicolored lotus pedestal, she is rendered here after a thankga of Naropa Tradition (passed down from a special teaching of the Indian Mahasiddha Naropa). Vajrayoginī herself may be classified as the personification of “Wisdom” or “Mother” and her practice originates with the Chakrasamvara Cycle of Tantras, which is one of the five principal tantric practices of the Sakya School, although found in one form or another, she is included in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. [8]
Vajrayoginī also appears in versions from the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, with one popular system having the practitioner visualize themselves as Vajrayoginī, as such, their guru taking the form of Milarepa. [9] Thus depicted above the central deity here we see Milarepa on our right, with his great Guru Marpa left (whose guru was Naropa himself, and other great Indian masters). [10]
Vajrayoginī is a simplified, single most form of the female Buddha, who is otherwise a collection of alternate forms. From her sādhanās she is visualized in English terms as “Vajra Sow”, “Wrathful Lady”, “Fierce Black One”, and other such similar manifestations of female energy found in numerous iconographic renderings and traditions. Each feature of Vajrayoginī’s visualization conveys important spiritual concept. For example, her three eyes indicate her ability to see all (past, present and future); her red-colored body symbolizes the blazing of her ”inner fire”, and the curved knife she wields, demonstrates the power to sever the delusions and obstacles of her followers and of all living beings. [11]

The current form of Naro Kacho Vajra Yogini appeared to the Indian Mahasiddha Naropa after he meditated intensely on her practice inside a cave. He beheld her glorious form in a vision. This unique form became known as Naropa’s Vajra Yogini or Naro Kacho, as it had never existed before. Later, in Tibet, His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche also had visions of Vajra Yogini. His vision differed slightly from the vision of her that Naropa beheld. In the original Naro Kacho form, Vajra Yogini looks towards her pure land named Kechara. However in Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche’s vision, she looked straight at him, symbolic of the deity empowering him to bestow her practice to many people in order to benefit them. The practice of Vajra Yogini belongs to the Highest Yoga Tantra classification that leads to tremendous inner transformation and can even grant enlightenment within just one lifetime.

Vajra Yogini has many different forms and in each of these forms, the positioning of her sacred body, the various implements she holds and the expressions on her face have profound meaning into various aspects of enlightenment. The implements she holds, the expressions on her face, and her body symbolise specific aspects of enlightenment that suit people during a particular time and place according to their karma. So, therefore, Vajra Yogini’s pose, forms and emanations change over time in order to suit different karmically-connected practitioners. It will keep changing because enlightenment is fluid, compassionate and skilful. To gaze upon Vajra Yogini is to look at a complete ‘roadmap’ to enlightenment as every aspect of her body is a manifestation of enlightenment. Therefore to have her form, picture, painting or statue is very blessed. We should make offerings to her daily diligently.
After the great Mahasiddha Naropa had served his guru the Mahasiddha Tilopa for 12 years, Tilopa conferred the Vajra Varahi (another form of Vajra Yogini) initiation with full instructions unto Naropa. Then, Naropa diligently meditated on Vajra Varahi and had a vision of her, and when she appeared to him directly, she appeared in the form of Vajra Yogini. Normally, when he engaged in the Vajra Yogini (Vajravarahi) practice, she was in the form of facing him directly, holding a skull cup and a curved flaying knife in front of her heart. One leg was up and one leg was down as in a dancing pose. That was the form of Vajra Yogini that he had meditated on to gain the highest attainments.
After he had meditated on Vajra Varahi and gained visions of her, she appeared to him in a different form, with her face looking up at Kechara Paradise instead of facing him directly. Her left hand holding the skullcup was thrust in the air and her right hand holding the curved flaying knife, also known as a cemetery knife was facing down at sentient beings or samsara to help beings cut their bonds to suffering. Her left leg was bent, and her right extended while standing in a pose of looking towards Kechara Paradise like she is about to take off there. This form signifies she will take you there and out of suffering. That form of Vajra Yogini became special and that was called Naro Kacho or the Vajra Yogini of Naropa. This Naropa’s Vajra Yogini was initiated to the Nepalese Pamtingpa brothers and they meditated diligently and this tradition of Naropa’s Vajra Yogini just became prevalent and took off from there. Naropa started initiating his other disciples as well into this special form of Vajra Yogini and she became known as Naropa’s Vajra Yogini till this day and it is considered a highly blessed lineage. That is the lineage we have now and most prevalent.
She is looking up because this Naropa’s Vajra Yogini is indicating she will lead her practitioners to her Kechara Paradise within one lifetime if you are diligent in her practice. Realizing enlightenment is harder for people in today’s world and needs more time during Kaliyuga degenerate period, she leads you to her paradise where you can practice undisturbed to Buddha-hood.
In this brilliant artwork, what you see is the Mahasiddha Naropa having a direct vision of Vajra Yogini. It’s the first time she has appeared to Naropa in this form. This form is associated with Naropa. Prior to Naropa, this form of Vajra Yogini did not exist. She in this vision is initiating him into this form (Naro Kacho) of herself indicating this form will be most efficacious now according to our karmic period. In the background, you will see a cave with a light in it because when Naropa used to meditate in that cave, it is said that from his body would emit a light and people could see it from afar. You can also see animals surrounding Vajra Yogini, they can feel her compassion and her great blessings and they are at peace around her.
Vajra Yogini brings peace, love, compassion, wisdom and freedom to everyone who practices her incredibly powerful tantra. Therefore, this artwork is a very beautiful representation of the time when Naropa had a vision of Vajra Yogini in this form for the first time and it is now known as Naropa’s Vajra Yogini. This artwork was offered to me as a gift from a very talented artist. I deeply appreciate this piece of visual spirituality very much.

From Tsem Rinpoche: Every person who has Maha-anuttaratantra empowerments (Eg. Heruka, Guhyasamaja, Yamantaka, Vajra Yogini, Chittamani-Tara, Kalacakra, Hevajra, Gyalwa Gyatso Chenresig, etc) should keep a copy of this on their shrine or prayer book. These are all the ritual items tantric practitioner must keep by commitment. If it is in picture form, it is alright also.
What I never will understand, may be Tsem you can say something about it:
I desire the Tantric Praxis of VY and know and see it is possible to attain buddhahood in one life. She is so strong- unbelievable and true. I train to see me as VY in every moment I think about her (I’ve got several initiations) I train to see everything as pure, pure pure and Buddha. And suddenly I shall clean myself with Vajrasattva Mantras? Logical and after all science of self prophesy: if we see us as not pure this thought will never change until we change the thought we are pure. Why shall we train to see us as not pure to make Vajrasattva Mantras? It makes no sense in my eyes.
We don’t practice the higher teachings because of pride, for knowledge for fame, to go to the next level and etc we practice something like the tantras in conjunction of bodhicitta. Bodhicitta is the mind that wants to become a Buddha so that they are full enlightened and have all the skills, wisdom and insight to helping and saving sentient beings.

The preliminary practice for higher tantra initiation such as prostration, Vajrasattva, light offering, mandala offering, Guru Yoga are difficult, but the post initiation practice require even more commitment!!
But of course if we can keep the commitments and hold the vows, we will have the highest achievement which is gain enlightenment.
