Gaining Inner & Outer Wealth: 18 Quotes from Tsem Rinpoche
Buddhism encourages its adherents to have few desires or wishes, and ultimately to eliminate them completely on the journey towards enlightenment. However, it is not wrong especially for lay practitioners to pursue wealth. In fact, Buddha says,
“Poverty is a suffering in the world for a layman.”
Wealth is not in itself wrong. Rather, it is greed, attachment or desire for wealth, and wealth gained in wrong ways that lead us to create negative karma, which then leads us to suffering. In the Singalovada Sutra, Buddha even gave financial management advice to a young layman to divide his wealth into four parts:
“One part should be enjoyed, two parts invested in [your] business, and the fourth set aside against future misfortunes.
In the spiritual landscape of Tibetan Buddhism, there are deities propitiated as patrons of prosperity and abundance, as well as for the removal of obstacles to gaining inner and outer wealth. These include Dzambala, Vaishravana, Gyenze, Vasudhara, Ganapati and so on.
There are also consecrated items and practices which can help us gain more resources and material wealth. Wealth vases are one such example.
When His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche was having tremendous financial difficulties during his years in Gaden Shartse Monastery, Rinpoche was advised by Dorje Shugden taking trance in the Choyang Duldzin oracle, to make a wealth vase and a wealth box to overcome his challenges. After following the advice, Rinpoche’s financial situation greatly improved.
We would like to share these 18 tweets from Rinpoche about gaining inner and outer wealth. May all of us be blessed with financial stability and spiritual growth, thus allowing us to make positive contributions to the world.
