Wherever I stay this is what happens..
4 March 2011
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
As the symbol for compassion and enlightenment, Bodhi trees can be found in almost every Buddhist monastery. This is hardly a surprise given the energy generated by the monastic community’s ultimate goal – to practice undiscriminating compassion, and achieve enlightenment.
Recently, Bodhi trees have been sprouting wherever His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, spiritual guide of Kechara, has a presence. It began with sprouts of a bodhi tree outside Rinpoche’s former Ladrang (a high Lama’s residence and private office), followed by sprouts outside of Kechara House’s gompa. The latest Bodhi tree has sprouted as an offshoot from a frangipani tree outside Rinpoche’s current residence.
It is very rare to see a Bodhi tree growing in Malaysia, because they are not native to this country. The tree also does not grow very easily, often taking 100 to 3000 years to become fully mature.
Since Bodhi trees are not native to Malaysia, there is no reason why they should be growing so frequently in this country…and so close to Rinpoche! Signs like this are therefore very auspicious as Bodhi trees represent compassion; it is said that Bodhi trees manifest where holy beings reside or where holy activities are conducted.
The Bodhi trees sprouting wherever Rinpoche goes is reminiscent of a story about Lama Tsongkhapa and the sandalwood tree. According to the legend, Tsongkhapa’s father took the afterbirth (placenta and fetal membranes) of his son and buried it in the ground. Moments later, a sandalwood tree grew right where the afterbirth was buried. The tree is now famously known as the Tree of Great Merit and emitting a pleasing scent, it also bears the impressions of the Buddha’s face and various holy syllables.
The Bodhi tree association with Buddhism and Enlightenment goes all the way back to the time of Siddhartha Guatama, the historical Buddha who is said to have achieved Enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya, India. The current tree there is now widely regarded to be the direct descendant of the original specimen which Buddha sat under.
Because of its close association with Enlightenment, which is the goal of all Buddhist practitioners, the tree has great sacred and symbolic significance. In the centuries after the Buddha, the Bodhi tree became a symbol of the Buddha’s presence and an object of worship.
With the blessings of the Buddha, we hope many Bodhi trees will appear at Kechara World Peace Centre in the future, a place where hundreds if not thousands of people will gather in the search for eternal happiness.

It’s really amazing, I believe all this for a reason. I have heard people telling me whenever there is a holy being, there will be signs such as mushrooms and Bodhi trees growing spontaneously.
Thank you for the sharing, wish all the dharma activities will continue to grow and spread to all direction.
Growing of a Bodhi tree is the sign of the holy beings residing in that area. No matter where Rinpoche resided, there will be great sign as such. Thank you Rinpoche for spreading the dharma and giving us the opportunity to learn and engage in dharma.
Bodhi tree is a large broadleaf evergreen tree which is considered to be an ancient sacred fig tree. It is native to Southeast Asia, southwest China, India and the Himalayan foothills. It was under this tree in Bodhgaya, India that the Buddha achieved Enlightenment. Wherever our Lama Tsem Rinpoche stay , one such tree of Bodhi will sprouts out from nowhere. It is said that Bodhi trees manifest where holy beings reside or where holy activities are conducted. That true enough as Bodhi trees represent compassion. May H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s dharma teachings flourish.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
I rejoice for the Bodhi trees growing every where Rinpoche stays. Just like Shakyamuni who reached enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, enlightened beings have auspicious signs appearing around them.
Just like a few month ago, a Bodhi tree was found in front of H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche’s gallery next to the Kechara Gompa. (picture)
May many people benefit from H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings and may the Dharma spread from Kechara Forest Retreat into 100 directions.
Thank you for sharing,
Pastor Antoinette
Great to see Bodhi tree which symbolising compassion and enlightenment are growing every where near to Rinpoche.
Now, one of the Bodhi tree in KL Ladrang is planted in Kechara Forest Retreat. Rejoice! May Buddhism grow and bless the whole area!
Dear Tsem Rinpoche,
Thanks for sharing Rinpoche.
The Bodhi-Tree is the world tree, and its roots drink deep of the waters of infinity. Its branches and leaves blow in the winds of the Void, and it is lit by the clear light. It is a tree of refuge, a place of safety from the raging tigers and dragons of desire. Each leaf has the bright green of spring, and its bark has the darkness and fragrance of the forest.
May the bodhi tree bring happiness to Rinpoche always.
Regards,
Venix
There’re many phenomenon and things happen and you can’t explain. But it doesn’t means it’s something not true or making up by some parties.
It might sound unbelievable for me before but now it seems convincing. We you have witnesses a holy being’s compassion and deeds, this is something easily accepted and appreciated.
Thank you Rinpoche for being here to benefit many in this country, this region and from here spread to the world.
Yes it’s TRUE… wherever Rinpoche steps foot in… something miraculous always happens. This Boddhi tree did not just happened once… it happened in the old house Rinpoche was staying and the landlord did not planted anything trees there either. I take this auspicious signs to mean we got a REAL DEAL DHARMA TEACHER here… so where ever Rinpoche goes… Dharma will manifest and grow without a doubt!
Wow! this is so amazing,it is so rare that a bodhi tree can grow in Malaysia and is in front of Rinpoche’s house.
There is a bodhi tree growing on the balcony of the 15th floor appartment of the condo where I live with my Dharma sisters Adeline Tan and Tan Gim Lee. It started growing soon after we moved in in November 2011. It grew from a crack in the wall. Inside, next to this wall is H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s throne. We believe it is because of Rinpoche’s “presence” that the bodhi tree grew. It is an auspicious sign and I take it as an inspiration and encouragement for us to do more Dharma work. The problem is, we can’t let it continue to grow from the crack in the wall. As it grows bigger the wall might crack even more. We are looking for someone to help us replant the tree.
Simply put, there’s a Buddha in our midst.
Prince Siddharta Gautama attained Buddhahood under a Bodhi tree 2500 years ago, therefore i always like to associate Bodhi tree is a holy tree and it’s like a Bodhi mind of an enlightened being, to me our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche is a Buddha that’s why Bodhi trees grow wherever He stays very auspicious!
Bodhi tree always appears wherever Rinpoche is in the neighbourhood. It never fails to amaze me all the time.
Amazing! Signs like bodhi tree, mushroom and rainbow appeared where ever Rinpoche is around is so auspicious!
I remember I saw the Bodhi tree appeared/ grew outside of the Kechara House gompa (prayer hall), it was on the sidewalk!
You can say it’s coincidence if it happens once or twice, but not so many times at so many different places.
I truly believe that these are signs by the Three Jewels to encourage Kecharians and everyone to have faith in and practice Dharma, as Dharma is the only real “miracle” that can lead us to ultimate happiness.
In a house in BU which Rinpoche stayed for afew years, a Bodhi tree grew and grew so big. The house owner was so happy; he said that it is because a holy being lives there.
I totally remember this. The tree was already at least 20-30ft when I first saw this tree in Bandar Utama. I was told it has been trimmed off several times already cos it kept growing and growing. My friend’s uncle’s tree did not even pass 10ft after 7 years of trying to grow his Bodhi tree.
Trees hold a special significance which have witnessed life on earth over large expanse of time. In some cultures, a tree symbolishes the Earth’s centre, where all times and places converge. For this reason, trees are said to be considered sacred and provide a focal point for meditation, guidance and prayers, if we are open to their energy; what’s more the symbolic Bodhi tree, which many buddhist practitioners have seen and known its significance, when Lord Buddha sat under it to receive his enlightenment in Bodhgaya, India. With all the good omens manifesting in the forms of mushroom shoots and sacred Bodhi trees wherever our Rinpoche is, we are very confident we shall be seeing many of them growing in our KWPC very, very soon!!!
Yes, can’t really explain 🙂 but always good to see Bodhi trees
Very very auspicious sign. Amazing! Hope we could see Bodhi trees grow everywhere one day so everywhere is Buddha land 🙂 PEACE….
Thanks for sharing, Rinpoche.
With love,
VP
Well said Victor!!
May the world become a Buddha land!
Dear Rinpoche, in my heart I am trying to raise a bodhi tree because of knowing you.
From Dawnene: I am in New Orleans, Louisiana..there is no way a Bodhi tree is found here yet I have a small budding bodhi growing in my yard that sprouted shortly after I returned from Malaysia and had the great fortune to have audience with His Eminence
Amazing!
