Mangala Sutta

Ewan, Me suthan, Ekan samayan Bhagawa, Sawaththiyan Viharathi Jethawane Anathapindikassa Arame, Athako annathara devatha, Abhikkanthaya raththiya;
Abhikkantha wanna kewala kappan Jethawanan obhasethwa, Yena Bhagawa, Thenupasankami upasankamithwa, Bhagawanthan abhiwadethwa, Ekamanthan attasi; Ekamanthan titha khosa devatha bhagawanthan Gathaya Ajjabhasi.
I have heard thus; once our Gautama Buddha was residing in the Devram Vehera monastery built by Baron Anathapindika, at Jethawana, near Srawasthi. Then, a deity (a god) came in the middle of the night illuminating the entire monastery with his radiance and after revering our Buddha, told the reason for his presence in a stanza.
Bahudeva Manussacha – Mangalani Achinthayun
Akhankamaana Soththanan – Bruhi Mangala Muththaman
All the Devas (gods) and the Humans, who care for righteousness, think about propitious attributes. Please disclose to us those noble facts.
Asewanacha Balanan – Pandithanancha Sevana
Poojacha poojaneeyanan – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Not associating ignorants, but, intellectuals; and revering those who should be venerated are propitious attributes.
Pathi Rupa Desa Wasocha – Pubbecha Katha Punnatha
Aththa Samma Panidhicha – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Living in a fitting neighborhood, having merit accumulated in previous births, capability of controlling the mind are propitious attributes.
Bahu Sachchancha Sippancha – Vinayocha Susikkhitho
Subhasithacha Yawacha – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Being well informed, knowledge of arts & crafts, being law abiding & obedient, and polite speech are propitious attributes.
Matha Peethu Upattanan – Puththa Darassa Sanghaho
Anakulacha Kammantha – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Looking after the parents, taking care of the family, and having an acceptable occupation are propitious attributes.
Daanancha Dhamma Chariyacha – Gnathakanancha Sanghaho
Anawajjani Kammani – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Giving alms, living a righteous life, providing for poor relatives, and taking part in right activities like observing precepts are propitious attributes.
Arathi Virathi Papa – Majjapanacha Sannamo
Appamadocha Dhammesu – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Dislike to sin, refrain from doing evil deeds from body and word, refrain from taking intoxicants, and do meritorious deeds without delay are propitious attributes.
Garavocha Niwathocha –Santhutticha Kathannutha
Kalena Dhamma Sawanan – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Respect and honour shown to the Triple Gem, parents and teachers, contentment, gratefulness and listening to Buddhist preaching at appropriate instances are propitious attributes.
Khanthicha Sowachassatha – Samananancha Dassanan
Kalena Dhamma Sakachcha – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Tolerance, Compliance, paying visits to the Sangha, and have discussions on Dhamma at appropriate instances are propitious attributes.
Thapocha Brahmachariyancha – Ariyasachchana Dassanan
Nibbana Sachchi Kiriyacha – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Restraint of the senses and being courageous, sexual chastity, understanding of the Four Noble Truths and realization of the end of suffering, Nirvana are propitious attributes.
Puttassa Loka Dhammehi – Chittan Yassana Kampathi
Asokhan Virajan Kheman – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
Being philosophical about the eight laws relating to the vicissitude of life (Ashta Loka Dharma), being rid of distress, and being rid of defilements are propitious attributes.
Ethadisani Kathwana – Sabbaththa Maparajitha
Sabbaththa Soththin Gachchanthithan – Ethan Mangala Muththaman
To live a secure life rid of all defilements, one should follow the above thirty eight propitious attributes.

Thank you for sharing this teachings on Mangala Sutta. I am not sure why I’m attracted to these type of teachings but I definately do. It’ll be such a great blessings to be able to just for a moment lived in that age where a living Buddha teaches, lived and radiates Wisdom & Compassion.
In regards to the article, I’m most curious about the Deity that illuminated in the night at the centre of the Monastery. What happened to the Deity after Lord Gautama speak of these propitious noble attributes?
