It’s hilarious but the truth is I am one of them.
The moment I watched this video it reminds me of our Tsongkhapa retreat in KFR few years ago.
During that retreat, Freon briefed the procedure, what mantra to chant and how many mantra we need to achieve. I was so arrogant thinking that this is simple coz I chanted Migstema mantra almost every day on my way to the office.
1st day of the retreat I wasn’t very clear on the instruction, my mantras count are way behind, which later part I clarified with one of the Retreatant. 2nd day of the retreat I was chanting very fast and even holding my breath,thinking to achieve the required mantras count
and finally we reached the last day of the retreat and guess what? My mantras count are still way behind few of the retreatants.
What I learned:-
a) Listen to instruction
b) Don’t take things for granted
c) Be humble

My mom love Lucy… the video reminds me of me and my staffs. Alot of things been promise and everything was hidden until one day it explode.
Both side need communication and there are times we need to be transparent to each other, be deligent, consistent ,mindful and tactful in whatever we do. This also me on moral studies that we had during school days.
Oh dear, from the movie, i learned that we tends to treat things easy and take it for granted. When things get more harder, we tends to hide it and even not doing it. Worst, when the superior thought they can handle without careful inspection she give more job task and make the things worst. Interesting.
This is hilarious! At first the two girls were like ” oh! It’s easy..” and suddenly the chocolates are coming in very fast, the most funniest part is where they stuff the chocolates into their mouths and toques, I couldn’t stop laughing until my brother had to ask me to stop..hahaha! Thank You for sharing Rinpoche, the video just made my day!
Dear Rinpoche, at first they were like “Wow, this job is easy! I can handle this” and then it started going faster and faster. It was so fast that they couldn’t catch up until they just drop the chocolates in their hat and shirt. It was really funny.
This is very funny. Especially with the stress that she is going through. Being mindful and quick is a key factor in any job and especially while practicing Dharma. Hilarious! The boss in this short film is very funny and quite the tough one.
Dear Rinpoche, this video is so funny that it was taking my breath away. They shouldn’t have said that it was an easy job. The machine was getting faster and faster until they don’t have enough time to wrap all the candy. Hahaha
LOL.. Hilarious. I miss the series. When I was about 5 or 6, I remember watching it with my parents and we’d all laugh together. Not that I can fully understand but it was her funny ways that made me laugh. We don’t have any good comedies nowadays. Seems so rare to find good ones. Like what David Lai mentioned, I love ‘Bewitched’ and ‘I dream of genie’ as it was funny!
Lucy was always my fave. She was the funniest woman alive.
It is hilarious! It’s like a jump into the sweet memories of the past. Watching that seriously makes me feel so relaxed and laugh non stop. Still remember those times when I was just sitting together with my dad watching this show. My dad will laugh heartily and sometimes choke during his laughter.
But in the funny side, we do know something, we should not relax ourselves and contemplate on whatever that happen. We should really put our efforts and heart into whatever we do. And this will reflect we are being too complacent. But if we do it with definite focus, we will not involve others to fall into the troubles that we had caused, because we ourselves will be able to solve those problems.
If you love Lucy, there is still hope. If you love Rinpoche, there is still hope. Even with Mr.Bean, there is still hope. Butt..I mean but, if you love Mamak Kutty, then the guardians of the wheel of samsara will never let you progress one rung up the ladder of the lower realms. This my friends is the harsh reality of life in Bolehland.

Thank you Rinpoche for putting this video up. It is very funny. I used to watch “I love Lucy” many years ago. She never failed to make me laugh. She was one of my favourite comedians. It is easy to identify with Lucy because she has all our failings. But those days, I just enjoyed her shows and her jokes and never bothered to analyse her. It was just plain fun, like watching Mr Bean. Why is Mr Bean so popular? I think it’s because the humour is universal. He doesn’t speak much but everybody understands him and sees a bit of themselves in him. Actually Mr Bean is not a very likeable character. He’s mean and selfish. And human… Mmm I wonder what Rinpoche thinks of Mr Bean.
Thank you Rinpoche for this lovely clip on I love Lucy. She is so funny. I remember when I was very young I always look forward to watching her show. Why? Laughter is the medicine of all especially when we are sad, unhappy, depressed, stressed, etc…. A great way to have a quick uplift and to distress oneself. Her show is always so funny.
This particular video clip does teach us not to hide or cover one’s mistakes or even procrastinates. The more we cover or hide, the occurring problem will pile up to a point one will not able to handle anymore. Thus, one should be honest and open for discussion on how to solve it rather than covering it.
Thanks for sharing all that info, Fang! I can’t believe that they said, “I LOVE LUCY” doesn’t teach us anything. I can’t imagine what they will say about “Sponge Bob” or “The Simpsons”.
Sitcoms like “I LOVE LUCY” represent good, clean humour that takes an aspect of life and exaggerates or dramatises it for our viewing pleasure. But there is so much more to it.
Like this clip which Rinpoche shared – we are all like that or have tendencies to be like that. We will eat up the candies or sweep the dust under the carpets when no one is looking, etc.
In this particular “I LOVE LUCY” episode, the easiet would have been to just go to the Supervisor and talk about how they cannot manage the flow. We fake so many things just to look good. That’s human nature. But of course, it wouldn’t be funny if that happened.
Humour is inserted because it makes us laugh at ourselves, so the truth is not so painful to bear. But the message is clear. Sort of reminds me of a certain Guru who teaches that way – using his own signature brand of humour to get the message across to us. He will joke about our ailments and make it sound so funny, but never doubt that it is not purely a joke. Hehe
Those days its very hard to make people laugh. This is very pratical and i agree with Yoke Fui, there’s just too much of unhappiness in life that makes us easily sad than happy. Try live into a simpler life and just don’t be attached with what things should look like or how things should turn out to be.
What i found in this story is that, Lucy and her colleague tried to hide the problem rather than discussing it earlier. Eventually when the supervisor finds out, they will be in big trouble. She should have brought this up and explain to the supervisor in the first place rather than hiding it away until it boils up in the end. Hiding makes matter worse.
This is truly really very funny, first time watching it, some more it is in white and black screen, hehe, watching something that before my age, how interesting.
As what Margeret said, laughter aside, it does bring us some dharma teaching, during the beginning when things are alright, we tend to slow down our work, laziness overcome us, and we start to procrastinate, when the work progress further, the pile of work becoming more until we can’t handle, for not getting scolded, we will hide it. At this point of time, if we decided to keep quiet and pretend everything is alright, pretend to look good, and when things become serious until can’t hide anymore, it will burst out and then other people will have to solve our problem, pulling people down from our pure selfishness.
This is a definite blast from my past! I specifically remember catching the sitcom on weekday evenings after school. Focusing on the characters and nature of the show – there was an interesting debate on the topic whether if ‘I Love Lucy’ is educational for its young audiences.

Education can be fun, but it is a disciplined activity. ‘I Love Lucy’ just doesn’t fit the bill. The children who wrote to USA Today took a different view, pointing out that “I Love Lucy” teaches valuable lessons about the consequences of one’s actions. They saw Lucy Ricardo, whose escapades often backfire, as a sort of reverse role model, and the show as something of a morality play. I find this an intriguing perspective. It is true that sometimes a lesson to be learnt can be right in front of our faces but, we fail to see it. Yet, easily picked up by others.
O dear, Lucy and her friends are so hilarious in this video. I can’t remember if I have ever watched this show when I was young. But having said that, humour is humour and some humour are just evergreen.
Laughter aside, what I learn from this video is that the inherent nature to hide our mistakes and to pretend to look good as if everything is fine, will result in more problems later. It is better to admit our mistakes or our weaknesses and then something can be done to prevent the same results from happening.

Laughter really is the best medication for laymen whereas meditation is the best medication for dharma practitioners. This video shows that age does not deter humour at all. This is still in black and white. I usually like these kind of black and white movies. I learned that if you want to prevent doing more work do not hide what you have done wrong. The boss in this short clip actually knew that the girls might fail, I saw it on her face. After they covered up their mistakes, the boss came and she was suprised so she called the conveyor belt msn to hurry it up, causing Lucy and her friend more pain. Also, when having bosses or teachers who are like that, we need to complete our work at a faster rate.
Lucy, how I love you. I remember the episode (in this video referred to by Rinpoche). I must have watched it many times when I was much younger. I’m not sure if it was the large eyes, the hair or the pouting lips that make me burst out in laughter even before any pranks or comedic scene was shown on screen; mind you it was black and white back then (with shades of grey, of course). I remember Lucy very well – and her husband, best friends, oh her boss. How he could tolerate her with all the mistakes – you would think that she would have been shown the door. Another lesson in the making – how you are almost always “paired up” with the most difficult person to work with – forgiving and patience.
Everybody loves humour and what is funny is subjective to culture and time. However, there are just some funny shows that are just always funny. You know, that are ever-green. I have never watched “I love lucy” before but I heard my mum talked about it before when I was very young. I just remember watching the black and white classics ‘I Dream of Genie’ and ‘Bewitched’.
I love those movies. They were so old and yet they didn’t need to rely on sexual innuendos or any form of vulgarities. It was just plain good acting talent along with a brilliant script. It is neat that even Rinpoches would enjoy such shows. I heard that some people who have never met Rinpoche went to Rinpoche’s blog and was blown away by how humourous and down-to-earth rinpoche is.

Yes, I too recall watching Lucy when I was younger and it was a classic treat for the family. I learned some lessons from Lucy although most oft presented with a parody and perhaps it was meant to teach us like what Joker said in ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘WHY SO SERIOUS?’ LOL

I remember watching “I Love Lucy” in my younger days when TV shows were only in black and white. There was no special effect , no sci-fi or CGI and whatever…. those were the days when actors rely only on their acting skills.
Some say to make people laugh is much harder than to make them cry because there are so many sad things in people’s lives that they can easily relate to and their tears will just flow.
Lucy is a natural in comedy. She is funny without having to screw up her face . People can relate to the funny incidences happened to her because at one time or other we are in the same situations.
Watching Lucy’s shows taught me how to look at life on the lighter side.
I nearly suffocated from laughter. I think this actually teaches us to be mindful and to be extremely careful. With bosses like the one in the short video, we need to be faster, faster and faster. Very Funny!
