Criticize me

Oct 7, 2013 | Views: 2,270

I have been reviled, criticized and gossiped about due to my opinions, directions and spiritual practice. My appearance, speech, knowledge, background, Kechara, my students, friends, race, lineage all have been criticized or made fun of or told it’s wrong or bad or even harmful. You only hate what you really love. Even to what I wear and eat have been negatively commented!! Some people have even viciously criticized my lineage, my methods, my Gurus and my Monastery. They even tell me my Guru is wrong, bad and is not pure and so on. They can say what they like about my Guru but will NEVER sway my mind about my Guru. They shouldn’t sway you also about your Guru ever as it reflects you how firm you are and who you really are.

I have eyes and wisdom to see my Guru is the one for me and that is all that counts. I know what I need. They can also say I am following the wrong teachings or I am a false ‘prophet’. I have things written and said against me openly and secretly. Part and parcel of what I do. Entertaining to me that I am that important to them to say so much and write so much? The more you say the more important I become.  I’ve had adversity to what I am doing since very young till now. I am a favorite subject of gossip for some. I am sometimes surprised at the accusations against me that is not even remotely me or true. Some untruths and rumors about me being said at times are very interesting as it has some element of truth twisted into it to seem more authentic. Creative I must say. I do find some words about me interesting, some ridiculous, some hurtful and some baseless. But it’s just words. Emptiness.

People have cheated me. Lied to me. Turn around and forgotten all the good things they have received from me and only claimed the bad. Nothing is all bad. Some have been disloyal friends and disloyal students or associates. I have been surprised as some of the disloyalty is in the face of all the sincere circumstances I have afforded them. But it does not matter. I am not the only one who has suffered this. Everyone has and it’s made me wiser, stronger and more determined to be sharp and observe and be kind. I forgive those who have done this but I will also protect myself as and when necessary. I harbor no anger towards them but they know not what they do as the saying goes. I will survive and be better and grow. I will grow. They make me grow. Thank you.

But what is important is I keep a good motivation, keep developing my mind, keep improving my spiritual practice, work hard to be successful for benefiting others, keep up my meditations and keep improving. I will keep up my commitments with my Guru/lineage and respect all other lineages, teachers, students and people. I will achieve to be better person and never get tired of assisting others no matter what is said about me. Will work harder I promised myself and my Guru. Because in the end it was not about me and the people who criticized me, but between me and my conscience knowing I did my best to serve. I will keep relieving the sufferings of others as best I can in my small way and not be discouraged ever because I will win and I am a winner. A humble winner! I will win in order to have more to benefit others. I have my karma to experience and all this is the results of my karma and the blessings to help me to grow within. I realize this. I blame no one, but move on. In the end, those who hate you help you to grow and mature faster than those who love you I realize. Those who criticize you and put adversity in your way knowingly and unknowingly are the people to thank because your growth depended on the situations they presented to you which made you learn faster and become wise to the world. Don’t be angry at them, but think what it has done for you although painful at times. The pain comes from within and we need to grow out of the pain and learn to deal with pain the right way and not revenge. No one, Kings or beggars improved their situations without adversity and enemies. The more enemies we have means we have lived for what we believed in and we are willing to be honest to experience the good and the bad that comes from our convictions. At least I have convictions and results. At least I believed and have results.

My spiritual convictions, practice, teacher and teachings helped me so much. The teachings of the Buddha really is what made me wise up to so many painful experiences and learn. Not everyone will find my spiritual path suitable for them, but they can find theirs and that is fine. Everyone has their own spiritual path and that is wonderful. Some find it through experiences alone and that is great too.

But you know what the bottom line is? Whatever is said and done to me, I will keep doing what I am doing because I believe in it and myself. I forgive the detractors and I harbor no ill-will. I pray for all of them to gain happiness and success, because only in their happiness will they find peace. Without peace they keep blaming others. May I bring them that peace. May all have peace.  Om Mani Peme Hung

Rinpoche had been criticized, gossiped since day one from stepping on the Malaysian soil about Rinpoche spiritual practice, knowledge, background and so forth. What Rinpoche experienced those nasty comments had even motivated and inspired Rinpoche , to be wiser, stronger and more determined .Not only that Rinpoche had been cheated, lied , having disloyal friends, students or associates too. It does not matter to Rinpoche who hold no anger to them. We are fortunate to have met Rinpoche who had sharing Dharma teachings and guiding us to transform our mind to be a better person. I don’t understand why should those unfaithful students turn around and forgotten all the wonderful things Rinpoche had done for them. At the end they will be the loser after all. Rinpoche had kept his promise after all to his Guru.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this teachings.

A poem inspired by seeing a picture of my teacher, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche…

In the sport of correct views,
all that is correct is just a view,
    without permanence or substance.
As long as we hold onto views,
    our sufferings are gathered
    to be experienced without end.

Without the strong methods of emptiness
    and compassion, bereft of merit,
    we sink deeper without respite.
To arise from this samsara is but
a dreamscape on the deluded mind.
Therefore seek the guru, who confers the yidam,
hold your vows and fixate on liberation
free of new creations. Free of new experiences as
    there are none.

I was walking past a second hand shop on Western Ave selling old things. They had a Japanese-style clay Buddha which was beige in colour on the floor, holding the door open. I thought the shopkeeper would collect a lot of negative karma without knowing if he kept such a holy item on the floor as a doorstop. So I went in to talk to him, but he didn’t look like he wanted to talk or that he even cared. So I asked him the price and he said US$5. I purchased it so he did not collect more negative karma. I was 17 years old and that was in 1982.

I escorted my new Buddha home and washed it lightly and wiped it. I placed it on my altar and was happy with the Buddha. I would do my meditations, prayers, sadhanas, mantras and prostrations in front of this shrine daily. When I left for India in 1987, I could not bring this Buddha along and gave it to a friend. It was a nice size and I made offerings to this Buddha for many years in Los Angeles. In front of the Buddha I placed His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s photo. I remember I was so relieved that the price was affordable. But US$5 that time was still expensive for me but worth it I thought. But I was happy to have brought the Buddha home. Tsem Rinpoche

Whatever you do good or bad people will always have something negatives to say about you. Criticism is something we cannot avoid but can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing. Years back I was criticized, betrayed, cheated, people turning against me and feeling disappointed but as times goes by it made me stronger instead. Letting go and move on to the next chapter of my life. I can understand the situation when Rinpoche been criticised and how he feels about it. What Rinpoche experienced is far worse than mine and has indeed inspired many people . I am fortunate to have met Rinpoche who has motivate me to learn and practice Dharma.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your thoughts, experience and teachings in this article.

Thank you Rinpoche for this teaching. It is really important to rely and trust our Guru in spiritual grow. You have to endure so much criticism even though your only motivation is to make us transform and learn dharma. I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to learn dharma from Rinpoche. Thank you once again.

I have been through similar things as Rinpoche is going through, and I guess I am still going through it. I truly understand how Rinpoche feels. I have female friends who come to me when they needed help, and when they have got what they wanted, they just ignore the friendship. Be it whether they want a boyfriend,to patch up relationship with the boyfriend,or to join Kechara. I have learned to accept this as I understand its my own karma. There were also people who tried to pull me away from Dharma. But I was very fortunate that Rinpoche knew about it and asked Martin to let me know. Now I try to let those things pass and just keep my motivation to improve my Dharma work with social media. And bring more people to Dharma. Thank you very much Rinpoche for sharing this article and giving me the chance to do Dharma work by helping with social media._/\_

I really appreciate reading posts like these because they show me that what I am doing is the right thing. Although whatever I have experienced TOTALLY pales in comparison to what Rinpoche has had to face, the fact Rinpoche is in the position he is in today – no anger, no bitterness – despite all of these experiences gives me the confidence that what Rinpoche is practising and how Rinpoche teaches us to deal with such negative experience does have positive results.

When we focus on our guru, it has many benefits. The first is that the guru becomes an external focal point so that whatever negative talk you experience matters less, because you are thinking less about yourself. You are thinking less about how the talk hurts or impacts you. In simple terms, it hurts less when you focus on yourself less, because you’re focusing on your guru.

Let’s get real, we are not Buddhas. So negative talk, criticism, being cheated and lied to, all of these do hurt. But when we have our guru, the hurt doesn’t stay around for as long because through our gurus, we are given reasons to move on and think about other things.

Because you are less affected by negative talk, it results in greater stability in our practice in the sense we will not swayed by the talk of false friends, whether it’s positive or negative talk. False friends are those who appear to be on our side, but in reality are reinforcing and encouraging the aspects of us which generate more karma for us to suffer and remain in samsara.

Then, using our lama as a focal point, we train ourselves in not transferring our frustrations from one unrelated situation to the next. In an ordinary level, when most of us are frustrated / angry / upset with something, we tend to let our emotions spill over from one event to the next. For example, if someone cuts us off in traffic and it angers us, when we step into the office, some of us may be very curt and rude with the first person we come across (even if the interaction with them is very neutral and mundane). Why? Because there is still leftover anger from the traffic incident.

But if we have respect for our teachers, we will learn not to project our frustrations onto our teachers, regardless of how our teachers treat us and of whatever else happens around us. When we learn and practise this, we can transfer that skill to everyone else. So training in this way, we learn to create harmonious environments around us.

So people talk about guru devotion being cultish and enslavement but I tend to err towards the opinion that they are uninformed. Even if we don’t go into the esoteric benefits of guru devotion, on a practical level using your lama as a focal point is very beneficial for our spiritual practice.

I watched most of your videos coping with having moved from an American big city to a German village. I don’t feel I have handled it that well. Anyways, at the start of November 2014 I did a general search about you having heard many of your videos. I did find some gossip about you. I felt like having heard other stuff you have said had prepared me for at least some of the gossip. I hear you are in California. I’m sorry if this is just general and around. Year 5 in a German village and having learned the language, sung with them and offered a little volunteer work on the yard work is nearly all the Christian version of “Dharma work” I have done. It has been tough. I found it easier to help both myself and others where I lived before. Now and then I gave to some of the beggars or something in the nearest city. Not much but managing to do more than nothing. Other times more a ritual or prayer type of thing. (insert self pity and the lack of it here).

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for taking time to conclude, think and share with all of us of Your thoughts, experiences, feelings and teachings.

What Rinpoche went through and going through now inspire many many people in many ways. Many have gone through and still going through such pain and they were/are just as lost as Rinpoche. But I am sure after they read it, they will think differently, at least the way they see the criticism towards them will be different. Even myself has benefited from what Rinpoche has shared above even though I didn’t really have so much of pain experiences in the past. But I change how I see the obstacles I have in front of my eyes and what Rinpoche wrote above make affirmation for my belief too.

And I found one of the most fulfilling things in life is that we can use our own experience, no matter good or bad, to inspire people, to help them, to ease their pain, to calm their mind even for a second. We don’t have to destroy people’s lives due to our own pain.

This is what I learned from this article.

The world around us is like a shattered mirror, which reflects impure views that fester in the form of criticisms, anger, jealousy and hatred. It is our task to remember that we are a perfect flawless mirror that reflects the truth.

  15. Vinnie Tan on Nov 6, 2013 at 1:02 am

We can never stop others from saying bad things about us, but what makes me believe in Rinpoche more is the results that Rinpoche has achieved despite what others has say.

These people who has said so much negative things, they have not even achieved anything after all these years, but Rinpoche has done so much work that has proven them wrong so many times. These people continue to say negative things because they are jealous and afraid, they are not willing to achieve in another higher level, hence all these things happen.

What inspires me most is Rinpoche’s attitude, and working harder so that these people will not be able to continue their rumours any longer.

Thank you Rinpoche for your precious sharing .You had been sincere in you thought and action .I believe your motivation is pure and it is solely for our positive spiritual development.
The truth is a bitter pill to swallow but most of us would conveniently choose the easy way out by convincing our own self that false contentment is our primary objective in life.
Keep up your good work. As for those who understand your true motivation and nature would support you .They will too develop a similar spirit of determination to pass the good word of Dharma and the true teaching to others in many years to come….

Since you requested critique, here it is:
    1. You care about other beings, but not for yourself. You’re no different from others. Keeping balance is important. Being hostile towards self is as bad as being hostile towards other beings.
    2. You write on your site about all good things you’ve done to the people. Why you don’t write about bad things you did? Even smallest actions, which people call “not important”. It’d bring many good to you and other beings, as you’d be seen more like a human, transparent in your own actions. Additionally, you’d be aware of what things in yourself you have to correct, as actions of people hostile towards you could be essentially reactions on your unwise act(s).
If I’d know you personally, I could criticize you accurately, because I’m basing only on materials you’ve posted on your site.
    Namaste.

I’ve read that Tibetans were taught to: “talk only good about others, and criticize only themselves”. It’s very wise, I hope that noone get offended by that post.

Better to make a stand for what we believe and trust, than living a lie. Living a life of lies is a life that has no meaning at all.

  19. Joy on Oct 21, 2013 at 2:02 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

To me it is very simple… once you have chosen your Guru. Stick to it through thick and thin. Chosing a Guru is far more sacred than choosing one’s wife or husband. So even if you think you cannot continue following your Guru for whatever reasons you deem is justifiable and call it quits, at least be honest and tell your Guru politely and do not be stupid and criticise your Guru because even if you don’t believe there is “karma”, well at least if you are wrong and ignorant and there is karma, you did not end up digging your hell hole bigger.

The way I see it is for those who can criticise another, they actually recognise that bad trade/character in them too and hence recognise or think they recognise it in others. If they do not have that in them to begin with how on earth would they be able to point it out? That’s just common logic. People can criticise, but what is the motivation behind it is very important. Is it to help improve the other, are we skilled, how do we deliver the criticism? Or is the criticism out of anger, jealousy, insecurities and hatred. What is the real reason one is even criticising? To help or to harm?

On the flip side, all famous, popular, good people are criticised, even Lord Buddha who had Devadata deceive him and tried to kill him, his own disciple trying to kill him! And still Lord Buddha showed us his compassion and forgiveness in him. So I am not surprised that this can happen to Rinpoche or anyone because this is samsara but what’s great is winners will be winners and truth will always prevail!

  20. wansan on Oct 20, 2013 at 2:50 pm

    Dearest Rinpoche,

Thank You so much for sharing your thoughts and feelings. People can say whatever they want but will definitely not sway my mind of being devoted to my guru, Tsem Rinpoche.

In this real world, everyone is just jealous of everyone else… But in the end, no matter what others say, if we get the results we wanted (with a good motivation), that’s all that it matters. If it benefits others and we are doing it in the positive way and good approach, then it doesn’t matter what others say about us, criticize us… the results is the prove to everything. Even to those who once said we couldn’t do it.

I like how Rinpoche says “I will survive and be better and grow. I will grow. They make me grow….. Those who criticize you and put adversity in your way knowingly and unknowingly are the people to thank because your growth depended on the situations they presented to you which made you learn faster and become wise to the world. Don’t be angry at them, but think what it has done for you although painful at times.”

    Thank You Rinpoche _/\_

Rumors are just rumors they will die off after a while because its baseless and the truth will reveal by itself finally. I like the way who Rinpoche is, very compassionate, wise and holds His vows very well.Always have good motivations to help others without agenda. Rinpoche shows a good example of Guru devotion to all his gurus and we all should practice this too. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your thoughts with us.

This is NO doubt he always care for other rather than thinking himself. It was impress me that Rinpoche take all the criticizes as motivation to push himself ever work harder, serve more..even wishing those people can find peace on them. This is really a good example for reaction of ” 8 versa of though”.

Dear Rinpoche, Thank you for sharing your inner thoughts. I thank you for showing me the true meaning of compassion. I would go ballistic when people speak badly, ridicule and insult my loved ones. But I now see how even in the worse moments Rinpoche turns it to strength and determination to continue. I know that Rinpoche is hurt by the many insults hurled at Rinpoche directly or indirectly. I am so sorry and I feel the hurt. yet Rinpoche is still compassionate. Thank you for this deep teaching in your post here. it will most definitely take me more time to develop this deep compassion especially with adversaries. But because of Rinpoche I can start a little now.

Rinpoche has given a powerful teaching on how to turn seeming defeat into a victory and a triumph over others’ criticism and verbal abuse of one.

I love the following words of Rinpoche:” I will keep relieving the suffering of others as best I can in my small way and not be discouraged ever because I will win…..I will win in order to benefit others”.This is a triumph of compassion over self-cherishing and self-centricism.

    just words. Emptiness”.

It is said, “The only way the Buddhas can guide us to enlightenment is by manifesting to us as Gurus in ordinary forms, which means that have faults, experiencing sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death, make mistakes in their actions, engage in negative karma.” Our ordunary mind is so deluded or obscured that we don’t have thwe karma to see an aspect without faults. It is said that our mind isnt pure enough to see any aspects, which defined as one having faults because ther is no other way to guide us directly. They have to maifest as something that we can see that accords pricisely with the level of our mind, so they can give us direct guidance through teachings, advice or other appropiate methods. This ordinary aspect is the only way thatcan give us direct guidance which can prevent us from being born in the lower realms, liberate us fromsamsara and even lower nirvana. It is said that this present ordinary aspect is the only one that can directly guide us to enlightment, the most precious in our life! Our precious Guru is unimaginarily kind to manifest inthis ordinary form, having faults which accord exactly with the level of our impure mind. But, the conclusion that seeing our Guru as ordinary does not mean that he or she is in fact ordinary! This present ordinary aspect is the only way that can directly guide us to enlightment! It is awful to see a person who believes they are on a spiritual path to seek peace and happiness, yet are not able to respect the beliefs and practices of another even when with similarities of beliefs. Find one practice that suits you but do not have to put down others for what they believe in because there truly is no right and only way in religion. We need to respect, understand and be compassionate of one anothers beliefs and practices. Don’t insult them for their beliefs it only makes you look worse of a person who claims to be religious.

I pray that Rinpoche continues to live long and benefit even more people whether small or not it still counts and I know Rinpoche does his best and never stops believing and keeping his promise to his Guru. Rinpoche has already benefited so many sentient beings it be dogs and cats to human beings, Rinpoche has tirelessly continued to be compassionate despite all the harsh words has been said directly and indirectly to him. I truly respect Rinpoche for not letting it affect him, showing everyone the true potential in themselves that they too can benefit everyone around them and still not be affected by criticism.

Please stop only remembering the bad but remember all that was good from Rinpoche.

i feel i am very fortunate to have heard and received your teachings with Dharma. i can observed i have changed myself into a better person compared to my previous negative personality and bad characters 3 years ago. i am truly grateful and would like to sincerely say a big Thank You for giving tremendous love, care, much patience, great wisdom and many Buddha’s teaching in English version through the Dharma you have provided through this blog and you tubes video. i am sure i will still continue to suffer more within my own delusion, wrong views, negativity and attachmentif i have never met Dharma through the teachings from Rinpoche.

  38. AL on Oct 8, 2013 at 1:24 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

People seems to have many critics of how you practice and teach the dharma however I felt your style was good enough for busy people. However in your recent post you mention that you just wanted 108 students to be by your side, how about those other who till this day still support and respect you silently which cannot make it to the 108 students? I personally have benefited a lot from your teaching and the gifts that you give me, however due to the reasons I did not want to join as full time Kechara, I was nicely kick off. Now I am left hanging and no where to go, because I wasn’t welcome in Kechara anymore. Even when others who have left Kechara keep talking bad things about you, I still believe you as who you are and what you were doing was right. I am sorry Rinpoche I just have to pour out on your blog here because I have no other ways I could reach you. Because I am not a wealthy person or a Dato which can have a private audience with you… Maybe is my Karma that unable me to… What I can promise you now is just to be a good person because

    Thank You

      Dear Al,

Many of my teachings are abundant on this blog and internet. You can easily learn so much from the internet. 🙂
If you wish to see me, then what is your name and location?
Be open with who you are and then we can perhaps talk.

Much greetings to you and may you practice what you have learnt already and find enlightenment. TR

Some say that the true test of the strength of faith is when in face of adversities and doubts. I remember Rinpoche once taught something along the line that ‘ultimately, we should welcome and embrace hardships as obstacles are when we can apply what we have learnt. If everything is well and smooth sailing, how would there be true practice of patience and the virtues’ Thank you Rinpoche!

  40. Kelvin Yong on Oct 7, 2013 at 11:22 pm

I have heard so many accusations about my Rinpoche which arises from their selfish and arrogant min. They even try to sway me away from my spiritual path and yet Rinpoche is always kind enough to forgive them and will be kind to them.
The most important thing is I know exactly what I want and my guru is the one and only one guru that I should have. I’m sorry Rinpoche for having you to be so tenacious and kind to teach a foolish student like me.

    With folded hands,
OM AH RA PA TSA NA DHI

I greet you in peace and solidarity! One Christian saint and a very good soul, Bl. Teresa of Calcutta once said: “If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Just follow the Path and you will never get lost. I salute you in your courage, compassion, and understanding. We are hoping that you’d continue your work, spreading the Wisdom and Compassion of the Buddha, and may your light radiate in the four corners of this world and beyond. – Your Christian mystic friend, Noel Sales Barcelona

I am very grateful to have met such a wonderful lama like His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche. I would never have the merit to meet another like Rinpoche. I think that criticism is bad and Rinpoche does not deserve criticism. Criticism is only used by cowards who wish to think that they are all that when they are not. They do not have accomplished what Rinpoche has accomplished and have to benefited the amount of people that Rinpoche has benefited. They have no right.

  43. Beatrix Ooi on Oct 7, 2013 at 9:20 pm

I have heard a lot of rumours and negative things about Rinpoche, but those were spread by people who are selfish and arrogant. Although I have heard so much rumours, but I know who’s the real friend and who’s not, who has benefited my family and who has not, who really cares about others and not just Himself, it will always be Rinpoche. No matter what happens, I will always trust and support Rinpoche, as for the people who just can’t live without criticising others/making others feel bad, they are not worth of Rinpoche’s time/tears/love, soon they will understand. But i’m 200% sure that my family will always support Rinpoche no matter what, be it doomsday or zombie apocalypse( it’s a bit dramatic, yes), but I mean it.

in our family we always said you can keep some of the people happy some of the tie but you can not keep all of the people happy all of the time best just be bloody happy. ( a real aussie outlook on happiness) Any way i think i can read between the lines of this extremely long monologue. How confused I am now after 15 years of following sogyal rinpoche he has been screwing his young female students now for thirty years. wow where does the truth of everythign lie only one place rinpoche in ones own mind and nowhere else and no one need to tell anyone else about it .

You used a great word – Emptiness!
The malice defines the person who use it, regardless of whether it’s right or not.
Of course You’ll keep doing what you have to do. This is the best way for You, for Your students and even for Your detractors.
    Thank You Rinpoche!

    Dear Rinpoche,

All said and done, those criticism does make us stronger and wiser. These few years, I have seen for myself how people who was once praising Rinpoche turned around and criticise in the worst scenario. All because of their anger and fear of facing the truth themselves. Have they forgotten how they have benefitted from Rinpoche’s care and teachings?

Like what Rinpoche said, may they have peace in the lives.

  49. SL on Oct 7, 2013 at 4:38 pm

    Dear Rinpoche

I had benefited alot from receiving your teaching in this blog. Like to do things without self-gratification, to treat people without ill agendas and never to make use of parent and always treat parent well.
People might had misunderstood you and created obstacles for you and i wish to offer my minute(as in one person) but full spiritual support to you!!

    With well wishes.
    SL.

  50. Patsy on Oct 7, 2013 at 3:08 pm

As Rinpoche’s student for a long time, I have seen many people harboring hatred towards Rinpoche yet Rinpoche has never reacted to all those negative remarks, accusations or physical harms. Instead, Rinpoche will forgive them and even pray for their well being. Throughout all these years, many have cheated and taken advantage of Rinpoche’s kindness and compassion yet condemn Rinpoche and I can’t imagine what will be the karmic repercussions of those people.

Negative people will not drag Rinpoche down instead it will propel Rinpoche to work even harder to benefit more as it is Rinpoche’s nature to help and care for all beings. Those negative people are just a dot as compared to the many that will always remain true and loyal to Rinpoche. We love you,Rinpoche! We love you for what you are!

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this thoughts with us . I fully agree with what Rinpoche has said the bottom line is our motivation if our motivation is to do good for others no matter what is correct because we did not harm others and Rinpoche has really show a good example of practice of Eight Vesus of mind transformation , if we always put this teaching into ou life than we will not react negativity or feel upset about negative command.

We cannot be loved, liked by everyone in this whole wide world, there will be people to criticize us, hate us and put us down from time to time.

When we hear criticism about others, we should use our brain, our analytical skill to observe, the object of criticism, then me make our judgement. If we become the object of criticism, we should examine ourselves, our motivations. If what we are doing is out of good motivation, do not let others stop us from doing what is good and do not be discouraged.

Throughout the years, Rinpoche has been lied, cheated, treated extremely badly, criticized, but he has never given up helping others, which is his only goal in his life. The more people criticize, the more growth and successful Rinpoche’s works are. Success is the best ‘revenge’ we can have to people who are trying to put us down.

When you are feeling down, wanting to give up, read more about Rinpoche’s life story, you will definitely be inspired!

  53. Valentina Suhendra on Oct 7, 2013 at 12:03 pm

    My dear Rinpoche

I found three types of criticism:
    – A constructive one: help you to get better
    – Attention seeking criticism: sometimes, when you respond to them, they become very different or neutral. But these types of persons require a lot of maintenance and must be continuously fed with attention
    – Jealousy or envy based criticism: just ignore them.

I found that my time can be better allocated toward other more useful things rather than entertaining the last two types of criticism. Just ignore them or reveal the facts that silent them. Their credibility will be shattered on their own. Results will speak by itself.

    Valentina

Thank you very much Rinpoche for the essay. My summary of your teaching is that criticism gives you a multi-level kick-in-the-pants and motivates you to do even more and better. _/\_

    • David Lai on Nov 9, 2013 at 6:10 pm

      Hi Choongs,

You are very funny when you say that. I think criticism is something that actually reflects someone’s immense popularity especially in Rinpoche’s case. For some reason, a lot of people are jealous and sense a lot jealousy on the part of many of those that criticise.

They may on their own individual levels or collectively as an organisational entity may or may never achieve the same results as Rinpoche and that’s why jealousy arises. They would find it harder to rejoice even when Rinpoche is actually doing good work. Instead of seeing the benefits of what Rinpoche is doing, they rather focus on the flaws. That would be their undoing because the karma would come back. The lesson of the day, rejoice. Rejoicing counters jealousy and it also makes it easier to learn and become a better person by learning from others. Jealousy stops learning.

As one of Rinpoche’s students, I have seen and heard accusations hurled at Rinpoche, twisted lies to cover one’s faults and selfishness, physical and verbal threats, defamatory remarks, and all above said. Yet Rinpoche never responded to all these negativities but instead send love and well wishes through prayers.
Some people realized their follies, apologised and returned to the dharma path, not necessary returning as Rinpoche’s students.
Some people see their follies yet were ashamed of what they have said and done and stopped those negative actions.
Some people cannot see and do not want to admit their follies, ran away and continue talking and doing negative deeds.
Yet Rinpoche still loves all of us.henry

    Dear Rinpoche
I am a new follower and I don’t know what is going on. After reading your post, I am thinking of Jesu Christ who had been criticized, betrayed and harmed, but Jesu said those people “don’t know what they’re doing” and prayed God for forgiveness. Wow! Was Jesu Christ hurted physically and mentally at that time. Sure he was. Otherwise, it was no meaning of greatness of Jesu Christ. He is so grace and so well known untill now and forever.

    • Choongs on Oct 7, 2013 at 10:11 am

Dear Henry, that is a good insight. But I hope that you will be a student and learn, do and experience, rather than be a follower. Just my thoughts to share. Cheers!

I have had horrible ugly and hurtful things said to me about my own guru, to my face, by people I don’t even know. And some of them were monastics. And I’m sure that when I am commanded by my guru to teach then I’ll get the same type of derision. It hurts, but…I know the results I get when I follow my teacher’s instructions. Sure he’s an obscure monk from an obscure lineage, but his teachings work for me. Your own gurus, your own teachers, their teachings work for you. You have had ENORMOUSLY good results from following your own gurus, and YOUR students have good results from following you. The Buddha’s final command to us was to be a light. And as a woman from the great green expanse of Texas, I can say that a light can attract two things: those who are seeking refuge from the darkness…or bugs…Just sweep the bugs out of your life and continue to be a refuge for those who need you. May you be happy and healthy, my dear Dharma friend.

Terrible night of degenerate times, terrible world of species devoration and cannibalism, terrible times, with the human animal as usual, utterly lost in his/her journey to ‘death’. I’m sure anything really spiritually valuable in this world, will be chased, fought,
denied, murdered if possible. How many ‘saviours’ had to give their lifes, and did it pleasurably if such a thing were possible, for the sake and love of dust bags (to be gentle) and idiots ! Nothing with love is lost, our remedy, our path (maha karuna),our only way.
What I read of the kind of criticism directed to the Venerable Tsem, made me think of childish folly. These who criticize everything and can’t stop the dear tongues unless they
slander something or someone, are unripe spoiled children,
prisioners of folly, with dire consequences ONLY for themselves.

you know rinpoche i think going for a ten year retreat with 108 students is a really smart idea for you and for the benefit of all developing a truly natural loving organic hideaway in the forest where fully luminous ones will eminate in ten years time. Nothing saying that books can not come out of the forest nor good works nothing saying all of the good works need to stop just 108 students growing together and then in ten years wow imagine what will have grown

The concept of rebirth has a long association with Buddhism. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to the teaching that the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called saṃsāra. One will begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. What they are reborn as depends on their actions in their previous life rather kamma. As a Buddhist we should believe in rebirth but still many people don’t . Buddha taught us that choices of rebirth make a difference and can shape many lifetimes. Buddhists believe that nothing that exists is permanent and everything will ultimately cease to be. Against the odds two inspiring nuns fought all the way to become ordained, fighting for their rights to practice Buddhism . Interesting read of how they went through , bringing equality for women in Thailand. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged female monks, have been defying the tradition getting ordained overseas, in Sri Lanka or India. Buddhist women have been fighting for years for equality and social acceptance in Thailand. They just can’t be ordained by Thai monks. Ven. Dhammananda, 68 year old former university lecturer and activist became Thailand’s first Theravadin bhikkhuni after going the odds. Inspiring read biography on Ven. Dhammananda and Ven. Dr. Lee. They had gone through great hardships, discrimination and against the many odds in bringing equality to women in Buddhism in Thailand.

The unseen things are spiritual realities that are eternal and invisible to our physical eye. There are many forces and phenomena that are not visible to the naked eye. There are many things that humans cannot see yet there are some could see. For what is can be seen is only. Things do exist even we can’t see, believing their existence is our choice. Things that we can’t see in the world opens up a curiosity and exploration by some. Whether through scientific inquiry, or spiritual exploration, the pursuit of knowledge about the unseen can lead to profound insights about ourselves and the universe.
Malacca City is the historic capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in Malaysia serving as a link between east and west for over 500 years. Famous for breath-taking sights with rich heritage, ancient dark culture and history with many old centuries buildings with an interesting past and a colourful ghost story. For that reason alone it is worth visiting as is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its well-preserved historical center. There’s many historical mansions been passed down generation to generations and with many ghostly sighting by the locals and visitors. There’s the reason many unseen beings loitering and attached to these places. Such an interesting and incredibly creepy watching the video in this blog host by Li Kim. Li Kim had done a great work all along with her team to share with readers about our historic Malacca .

Vajrayogini symbolizes the wisdom of all enlightened beings and embodies the impulse of inspiration that drives the Buddhas to attain the perfect enlightenment. Vajrayogini is one of the most effective practices for people today. We can make offerings such as gold or jewel offerings and so on. The offering of gold helps us to collect merits, spiritual attainments, gain a deeper connection to Vajrayogini. It also creates the causes to attain a Buddha’s body.
Make Offerings to Vajrayogini in Kechara Forest Retreat at Bentong is such an meritorious way for us to collect merits. All thanks to our Guru having conceptualised the idea of having a statue of Vajrayogini for everyone . Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this insightful article. Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way. What ever matter to us at the time of death is nothing. In the end, it’s not the years in our life that count it’s what you leave behind that matters. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. Learning Dharma and practicing dharma is the our choice that’s matter. Some of the key points to take notes, read, study the Lam Rim and apply it, engage in Sadhana daily and consistently. No one will help us at the moment of death but ourselves. Spiritual practicing is the best choice.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Well the size of Buddha statues in Tibetan Buddhism is important because it represents the Buddha’s immense ability and vast knowledge. Hence the Buddha statues hold the symbol of satisfaction within, peace and happiness. They are a symbol of inspiration for every human being. When we focus on the Buddha statues, it gives us inner peace that our mind, our heart and our soul gets enlightened.
We have are so fortunate seeing and circumambulating where the 9-foot Dorje Shugden statue and with 500 mantra stones engraved with Dorje Shugden’s sacred mantra. As Rinpoche had said before the bigger and more Buddha statues helps in planting seeds of enlightenment in people’s mind-streams. It also help us to generate as much merit and purify as much karma as possible. Merely by seeing all those big statues at Kechara Forest Retreat is a blessing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

The 4th Tagpu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub, most commonly known as Tagpu Dorje Chang, was a highly accomplished yogi Highly attained lama who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas and even travel astrally to receive direct teachings from them. His recognised line of incarnations stem all the way back to the 14th Century. He is generally regarded as such amongst Gelug lineage holders. He spent most of his time in a hermitage located above Sera Monastery, gave teachings and transmitted many vital practices and lineages to his foremost student Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Besides receiving the complete instructions of Dorje Shugden’s practice, Tagpu Dorje Chang had many other mystical experiences throughout his lifetime. Interesting read biography of a highly accomplished mahasiddha lama.

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.
Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.
He was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia years back giving an enthralling Dhamma talk on the timeless teachings of Ajahn Chah.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
