Map of Russia where you can see the Kalmyk Republic in the Western part of the country. It is in Europe. The other two republics are also Mongolian and they are Tuva and Buryatia.
Dear Friends,
This is something cultural and rich that you must see and enjoy. I wanted to share alittle of my background with you.
As you know part of my ancestry is Mongolian (Kalmyk). The Kalmyk Republic is one of the republics in Russia. And Kalmyk Republic is the only European republic that is Buddhist and they are Mongols in ancestry. They are proud people.
I found a video that is very good. It showcases all the dances of the various Russian Republics. Very beautiful and rich Russian heritage. Russia is beautiful. Russian dances of their various republics is stunning.
At 27:59 of the video you will see the Kalymk performers doing the Mongol-Kalmyk dance. They are so good and look really fantastic in the national clothes of Mongols. I use to dance in a Kalymk dance troupe as a kid wearing the same National clothes, but I couldn’t dance like these guys in the video! I was amazed how beautiful it was done and talented the Kalmyk dancer are as well as the other republics. I want to share with you. Thank you.

A poem inspired by seeing a picture of my teacher, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche…
In the sport of correct views,
all that is correct is just a view,
without permanence or substance.
As long as we hold onto views,
our sufferings are gathered
to be experienced without end.
Without the strong methods of emptiness
and compassion, bereft of merit,
we sink deeper without respite.
To arise from this samsara is but
a dreamscape on the deluded mind.
Therefore seek the guru, who confers the yidam,
hold your vows and fixate on liberation
free of new creations. Free of new experiences as
there are none.

I was walking past a second hand shop on Western Ave selling old things. They had a Japanese-style clay Buddha which was beige in colour on the floor, holding the door open. I thought the shopkeeper would collect a lot of negative karma without knowing if he kept such a holy item on the floor as a doorstop. So I went in to talk to him, but he didn’t look like he wanted to talk or that he even cared. So I asked him the price and he said US$5. I purchased it so he did not collect more negative karma. I was 17 years old and that was in 1982.
I escorted my new Buddha home and washed it lightly and wiped it. I placed it on my altar and was happy with the Buddha. I would do my meditations, prayers, sadhanas, mantras and prostrations in front of this shrine daily. When I left for India in 1987, I could not bring this Buddha along and gave it to a friend. It was a nice size and I made offerings to this Buddha for many years in Los Angeles. In front of the Buddha I placed His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s photo. I remember I was so relieved that the price was affordable. But US$5 that time was still expensive for me but worth it I thought. But I was happy to have brought the Buddha home. Tsem Rinpoche

It was fantastic and exhilarating . The musicality, phrasing, playfulness, choreographic structure of Kalmyk folk songs have been performed during rituals and ceremonies, as well as in the context of everyday life.
Kalmyk folk songs are rich imbued with deep historical, cultural, and aesthetic meanings and layers. Notable and tragic events, the fate of various people, famous and ordinary alike, ideals, hopes, and desires: all have found their reflection in folk songs. Watching the varies folk dances and music was really fantastic. Those women and men were indeed energetic and talented dancing all the way non stop. Loved those colourful costumes. Kalmykia and its inhabitants offer a fascinating glimpse into the ancient culture, song and dance of the western Mongolian peoples.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing. I do enjoyed watching the folk dance and music.

卡爾梅克人的舞蹈的確是非常獨特的,我從來沒有見過這個,他們的表演真棒!
The Kalmyk Mongolians were not only talented as dancers, but many were also involved in traditional music in a wide range of instruments and uses the human voice in a way found almost no where else, which is known as “the Khoomi”. It gives the impression of several notes coming all at once from one’s mouth. It is often sung solo. Some mongolian music, particulary instrumental music, is specially to accompany dancing. Mongolian dancing includes a number of kinds of group folk-dancing similar to round dancing and square dancing. These are performed by groups of men, or women, or group of mixed couples, which is called “Bujig”. It is said that the most typical mongolian dance form is “Bii or Bivelgee” – an “upper-body-dance” normally performed by women. The dance consists of intricate rythmatic movements of the Head, shoulders, arms and upper torso. Some dancers display their skill by dancing with bowls of tea or a rag balanced on their wrists, elbows and heads. How intricating!
Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing. It is good to know that there those in the community that are working hard to preserve their culture and proud of their heritage. It is very rare to preserve such traditional vibrant dance movement alive and intact.
May the Kalmyks be able to retain their heritage for many years to come for the world to see as for them to understand the unity and integrity of the existence of such tribes.
Wow, Kalmyks are really talented. Their costumes and dance moves show us they are proud with that and they really look into their culture and working hard to keep it to the next generation.
Thanks Rinpoche for the sharing, this video is awesome…
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing a little of the culture of your ancestry through this dance video. From the video, you can see clearly the costumes of the Kalmyk dancers really resembles the costumes of those in Mongolia with some Chinese touches to it.
The Kalmyks dance is indeed very unique, I have never seen this before, and yes through their moves we are able to know that the Kalmyks are very proud people. I really respect the guys very much, its not easy at all for males especially to do that sort of ballet moves, their performances are awesome!
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing your wonderful culture. I love the dance and I think Kalmyk folk dance is really quite interesting and I love it when the dancers take off with one hand in the air and the other in front as if riding a horse. The girls on the hand with their long skirts and graceful moves seem to float around the stage like how I would envision a dakini would…
These dancers are rather impressive and talented. It is wonderful to learn about the Kalmyks as they are very wonderful people. These dancers make dancing seem so simple, when in actuality, dancing ain’t an easy feat.
Very nice, I can imagine it being very much harder than it looks. very unique dance moves and costumes. It is always fascinating to see culture from the ever so discreet nation Russia. Would very much like to experience their culture one day.
I remember back in school during Physical Education classes where we were taught simple Folk Dancing. I failed miserably because I have 2 left feet.
These dancers make dancing look so simple.
