Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) New Building

Aug 24, 2010 | Views: 989

On the spur of the moment, I decided to go to see the new Kechara Soup Kitchen off of Jalan Imbi in town. I wanted to do a prayer and a blessing for it’s further growth. I called up Ruby (the president of this dept) as she was nearby. So myself, Ruby, Sengpiow, Monlam and Siong Woan, went to take a look. It was last minute, so I didn’t call others to join. I was in for a GREAT SHOCK. A TREMENDOUS SHOCK. The whole interior, colors, layout and design was all conceptualized by Ruby. Wow. She is super talented I must say. The shock was everything is so well done. So well planned. So nicely layed out. Everyone in KH must go and see. You must go and see!!!

Back in November 2006 when we were just starting our KSK deliveries, I always wanted to make it expand. Now it is finally. We had a Kechara Paradise Outlet on Bukit Bintang and we use to pack the food there and from there go and deliver to the homeless. We were just doing around 50 packets. Now we are doing 800 packets a week to the homeless and we have our own building. Fantastic!!!!

I felt excited as Ruby took me on a tour and explained. I felt that it was such a good thing we are doing. From the depths of my heart I felt that this building represented the hard work, dedication and aspirations of my senior students who stuck with me for over a decade now loyally and faithfully. It was the aspirations of my senior students and myself.

Many years ago we talked about doing things that would give back to society, that would have impact and perhaps inspire others to do the same. Now we are doing it. I am so happy and extremely proud of this building and what it represents.

We can complain about this or wait for someone else to do something. But while we wait, many people go hungry. We are blessed to be in Malaysia. Malaysia has so many things to happy about. We are blessed by the government here. But there are just some people who are down in their luck at this time and they are homeless. We must help them. We cannot let them starve or feel they are not worth anything. We must help our fellow beings. And WE WILL. WE WILL AND NEVER STOP. KSK WILL EXPAND. I WILL TOGETHER WITH MY KSK PEOPLE MAKE IT EXPAND.

I like to thank Ruby Khong, Julia Tan, Siong Woan, Justin Cheah for their hard work and all the volunteers also. I like to especially fold my hands to His Excellency Dr Datuk Victor Wee , Chairman of Tourism Malaysia to be our Patron of Kechara Soup Kitchen. I am honoured and very happy to work with Datuk Victor Wee. Datuk Wee has a punishing busy schedule, but he has a heart of gold and very soft heart for those in need. I am truly happy that he has added this Dept. of Kechara to his many beneficial causes. He is a man that represents our aspirations well. That is if you want to do something, you can. Just do it! Thank you from the bottom of my heart everyone. My deepest respects to Dr Datuk Victor Wee and Ms Ruby Khong. Thank you to the KSK crew.

My humble prayers, Tsem Rinpoche

This is Ms Ruby Khong, the President Kechara Soup Kitchen. She is my long time student and good friend. A lady of intelligence, compassion and loyalty. She has been through so much with me and loyally stuck by for over a decade now… I pray for her, her husband, children and family all to be blessed by Tsongkapa in all their endeavours. Thank you Ruby.

How kind of you. Kechara Soup Kitchen dept is now feeding over 1,200 homeless persons per month. Your help would be welcomed on their behalf. I thank you. Please contact Datuk Ruby.

Another of Rinpoche’s dreams and wishes are fulfilled and has taken fruition. The new Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) building in Jalan Imbi is now in operation serving around 700 to 800 of hot food packets to the homeless. Inspired by Rinpoche and the hard work of people like Dato Ruby Khong, Justin Cheah, Julia Tan and Siong Woan and volunteers was able to aquire a building now for KSK to feed the homeless. KSK don’t need to walk the streets to find the homeless to deliver the food. They can go to KSK to take their hot meals now. With the influence of Dr. Datuk Victor Wee who is the chairman of Tourism, Malaysia and Dato Ruby Khong KSK will not find any problem in rasing funds to feed the homeless.

I would like to congratulate my dear sister Ruby and her energetic team for having done such a good job to make KSK grow so fast within such a short period of time.

I just got back from visiting KSK building and wow!!! The place is tastefully done up and well planned. The homeless will now have a chance to enjoy a warm meal in a comfortable and nice place….a “5 Star” Soup Kitchen.

May Kechara Soup Kitchen grow nationwide to benefit many more in the near future.

  4. Lim Han Nee on Sep 2, 2010 at 6:08 pm

    Seeing is believing!
A small group of us visited the new KSK building last Saturday night. We were bowled over by the plan and arrangement of everything in it.We could see that the thoughts behind the planning of every item and unit revolved around the needs of the clients/the homeless and how best to serve them.
Congratulations to Ruby and your team for finally realizing Rinpoche’s vision of a soup kitchen.I must take this opportunity also to pay special ‘tribute’ to Justin for having so selflessly and untiringly worked to serve the homeless over the last few years.

Kenny I don´t think you mean something bad but I would change “get his hands dirty” to “get his hands clean” = a pure gift from one person to another pure person in need. Think about it!

    Humbly!

I am so happy for Rinpoche his dream is realised, for Ruby because her hard work has paid off, for Justin, Julia and the whole crew. But most of all, for the people who will benefit from all these dreams, hard work, aspirations, love and care which makes it all possible, the homeless and hungry.
May Rinpoche’s dreams continue to manifest into more outlets to benefit the truly needy. Thank you my guru.

  9. Sandy Clarke on Aug 27, 2010 at 9:52 am

Wow! The new building looks so modern, fresh and vibrant. Every new project – big or small – that gets undertaken at Kechara doesn’t just get “done” (that doesn’t seem good enough!), it gets done to the highest standard, exceeding expectations. When I read the “New Building” headline, I didn’t expect to be blown away as I have been by the results.

The expansion of KSK is just another fine example of the Kechara philosophy of, “if you want it done, just do it – no excuses!”
To know that there are people who suffer from the deprivation of the necessities of life is so sad, but it is inspiring to see such hard working people give so much of their time and effort to work collectively towards achieving a goal that works for the continuing benefit of others.

If I may, I offer my sincere appreciation and respect to everyone at Kechara and those involved with KSK who work tirelessly for others and deliver such a vital service to those in need. And may I also give thanks to Rinpoche for not only selflessly teaching his students the Dharma, but also for constantly providing us with examples of how we can actually live the Dharma to develop ourselves and benefit others.

    Kind regards,
    Sandy

It’s very tastefully done, and I hope that KSK will be able to benefit a lot of the down and out ppl and help them get back up on their feet. Also, KSK have also opened up an avenue for lots and lots of normal people to get involve in charity… no excuse not to now… ha,ha. Congrats Ruby and the KSK team.

I Really respect full time staff (Especially Justin) who goes down to the street on a daily basis to get his hands dirty (everyday) to help these unfortunte souls. You really must have a heart of gold… please perservere and keep up the good work and may all the buddha’s smile on you.

  11. Ethan on Aug 26, 2010 at 12:40 pm

    Brilliant!

KSK has come a long way indeed. The growth in such short period only shown that the effort, passion and the hard work of the KSK team. Kudos to the KSK team!

I like the interior of it. Very simple and chic. Now they have a place where they can serve the people better, finding them jobs, arranging medical treatment, a place to understand the needy even more and also make it easier for the volunteers and patrons to pack food for the homeless. With its location in the heart of the city, it is more accessible for the people. I am very happy for KSK growth and I hope more and more people will join us to continue to benefit others.

  12. weeliang on Aug 26, 2010 at 2:16 am

Just to add a little detail. If anyone is looking to pay the new KSK office a visit, please turn left right after that Honda showroom on Jalan Imbi. You will see it on your right. You wont miss it. The signboard really stands out. 🙂

  13. weeliang on Aug 26, 2010 at 2:13 am

I took a drive down to town this morning to have a look at the new KSK in Jalan Imbi. It is located at a very strategic spot. We could even notice it from the main road. Many good wishes for the smooth operations at the new KSK. May the packing of food this weekend be a new chapter for a even more successful KSK!! I have also heard that Ms Ruby Khong has arranged for celebrity chefs to cook at KSK. I admire the love and respect that everyone at KSK has for the homeless. They bring hope to the needy.

  14. Anila on Aug 25, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Congratulations Ruby. You have really fulfill our Guru’s Tsem Rinpoche dream of wanting to help and feed the homeless which he had experience when he was young. Rinpoche has gone thru a lot of hunger and had to sleep under bridges while making his way to LA where then met Zong Rinpoche and his centre. From this experience he realised how hunger and being homeless can affect a person. From what I understand Su ming started off by distributing food packets herself to people on the streets. Later Ruby took over. With hard work and lots of efforts Ruby and her crew has bought a building and also made it into a centre to provide not only food but medical and also looking for jobs for the homeless under one roof. And that is Kechara Soup Kitchen in Jalan Imbi.

wow, the KSK new building shows the energy of the team,
Rejoice to Ruby, Justin Cheah, Siong Woan, Julia and many other volunteers and sponsors.

Thank You so much for sharing with us the wonderful news and the nice pictures of KSK’s new building.
I am extremely happy to see KSK’S OWN BUILDING has manifested and is also one of Rinpoche’s dream to help and benefit others.
Thank you to Dr. Datuk Victor Wee, Ruby and the teams for making KSK manifest.
I am very proud of all you, your hard work and Kechara Organisation.
    CONGRATULATIONS TO KSK!

    When we see others’ successes
    Whether in daily endeavors
    Or in Dharmic activities
    The first thing that comes
    To our minds
    Is jealousy and envy
    We ask ourselves
    Why these successes don’t come to us;
    Not caused by us?
    Rejoice! You fools!
    For we are the same.
    Since we are the same!
We and I are the same.
    I am the fool!
    Rejoice fool! Rejoice!

    Thanks KSK. Thanks Guru!

This is fantastic Ruby and to you team. WE Kecharians are proud of you and the team and to work that you all do. Imagine how many people this will be able to help. It’s phenomenal. With such good motivation, KSK will continue to grow and benefit so many. Kechara is so full of wonderful and inspirational people, and with the blessings of Rinpoche, will go on to benefit many more!

  19. henry ooi on Aug 25, 2010 at 10:18 am

KSK building is very well done to provide the best to its clients. It is just a building but the present KSK committee members headed by able bodied Ruby and Justin Cheah are setting good examples for others who inspire to be on the team.

Feeding the homeless is just the beginning, importantly nurturing them to be independently self sustaining for them to regain their lost self esteem, lack of confidence and trust, and to rejoin society as a citizen of the world.

May other such KSK org sprout throughout to benefit many more.

  20. Jean Mei on Aug 25, 2010 at 9:07 am

I just got back from taking a look at it..

Although my friend and I didn’t know where it was exactly, we drove along Jln Imbi and spotted it off the main road!

The sign on the lot was big, bright and the words KECHARA was very clear!

It’s at a BRILLIANT location. I had breakfast 3 blocks down the shop-lot at the inter-section, and while watching the sun rise and watching people making their way to work I felt that the area where the shop lot is at had a different feel to it; a very good feel to it.

I love how it’s at the very heart of the city and accessible to a lot of homeless people (by foot).

I felt so proud for both my mum and for Kechara for having such a presence in KL city and all for a good cause. 🙂

KSK was the brainchild of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, and ever since many homeless people are no longer invisible to us anymore to us. The new KSK building is so fabulous looking and may it truly benefit many people and bring them back to society’s fold.
Hope more doctors can step up to help the homeless at KSK>

  23. cynthia on Aug 25, 2010 at 3:06 am

If it looks anything like the pictures, then I must agree it looks really good. I will definitely go and see with my own eyes. I think KH should feel very very proud that is this the very first and one of its kind in Malaysia. Well done Ruby and KSK team!

This is what I see in the future. People queuing up daily and some even camps outside KSK building :=).

  24. Bonita on Aug 25, 2010 at 1:28 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

Yes, KSK has indeed grown leaps and bounce under the strong leadership of Ruby. She is really an all rounder from doing PR, socialising, leading a group of dedicated staff and also in-charge of Rinpoche’s personal affairs matters. She is also the ‘darling’ of the media nowadays, wherever you go, one will sure hear of her name.

Many many more will benefit from the growth of KSK. Homeless will not only be helped to get off the street but also will be empowered to be independent.

    Congrats, Ruby & team!

  25. Yoke Fui on Aug 24, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Yes, KSK has come a long way in a relatively short period.

Rinpoche’s conceptualization of this virtuous deed is actualised to the publicly well known organization by his long time student, Ruby Khong together with her team of dedicated committee – Julia, Siong Woan, Justin and Karen.

They have shown with Guru devotion and effort , nothing is impossible.

  26. Shirley Maya Tan on Aug 24, 2010 at 10:58 pm

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice!

From walking on the streets to feed the poor and homeless, Kechara Soup Kitchen has evolved into its very own building. Now, KSK can do so much more and serve their ‘clients’ much better.

Kechara Soup Kitchen is now able to feed 7 days a week and not just on weekends.

They are many facilities in the building which their ‘clients’ are able to make full use of. Those washing machines and dryers can certainly be out to good use! Those who live off the streets can now wash their clothes in KSK, get warm food to eat and drinks. Above all, be counseled and helped.

Ruby has worked very hard to get KSK to where it is today. I dare say, she is just getting warmed up.
This lady never stops because she believes in her Guru’s vision.

May KSK help many more and benefit the whole community!

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing all these great news and wonderful pictures.

  27. KYC on Aug 24, 2010 at 10:58 pm

I’m very happy for Rinpoche. It is like a dream come true. Congratulations to the President Ruby Khong and her team for making this happen. The building is very impressive and the facilities are very modern. I hope many homeless and hungry people will find solace here. I’m looking forward to seeing it in person and learning about KSK’s plans to further help and nurture people in need.

  28. ngeowchin on Aug 24, 2010 at 10:21 pm

    Wow Wow Wow.
There is a Malay proverb that says,’ A little by little , over time, a mountain arises’. I thought this reflected how I feel when I look at the pictures here of KSK’s new building – the fruition of many little wishes and actions- all started from a single sincere wish from Rinpoche to start a Soup kitchen to feed and help the homeless in the streets.
To Datuk Dr Wee, Ruby and the KSK Com, volunteers past and present, and all the volunteers, I salute your outstanding hard work, and kind hearts to bring KSK to this level of success to benefit even more.
You make me feel proud to be a Kecharian.KSK is truly the manifestion of Rinpoche’s great compassion.

  29. Sharon Saw on Aug 24, 2010 at 10:05 pm

KSK has grown so much over the years and this building is really a milestone to be proud of.

Congratulations to President Ruby Khong and her very capable team, and of course Rinpoche for being the inspiration and support for KSK to benefit others.

The building looks fantastic! May it bring relief to many.

  30. Andrew James Boon on Aug 24, 2010 at 9:58 pm

In just a little under 4 years KSK has managed to grow at an exponential rate. An example of how sheer genuine motivation, hard work and all for a good cause will open the doors to success.

I have had the privilege to work with and enjoy the company of Liaison Ruby and I find her character and energy infectious. You know in your heart she is genuine and has no hidden agendas. Incredible lady and she deserves all the credit and good exposure she is getting now. Not to feed her ego as she knows, but to make KSK grow even more to serve more… as KSK’s motto goes: “Hunger knows no barriers”, then why should its growth!

Kudos to Ruby and her very hard working team of Justin, Julia and Siong Woan. You guys are shining examples not only to fellow Kecharians but Malaysians alike. World recognition is around the corner and exciting times ahead!

Much to love to all…. Andrew

    • Andrew James Boon on Aug 24, 2010 at 10:52 pm

Last line of my 2nd paragraph has a typo: It should read ” as KSK’s motto goes: “Hunger knows no barries”, then why SHOULDNT its growth!

  31. Paris on Aug 24, 2010 at 9:32 pm

Wow this is fantastic! I am, as ever, bowled over and so happy for all that Ruby and her team have done. Ruby shared with me her motivation for making the soup kitchen so nice: that many the people on the streets will probably never have the chance to eat and spend time in a nice place. So they made the soup kitchen extra nice for their clients – a real show of care for their entire well-being, not just “getting the job done” by giving them food.

Thank you Ruby for showing us such a true example of selflessness and care.

  32. Elena on Aug 24, 2010 at 9:16 pm

The building’s got my mum’s style written all over it! A project can only manifest in such a manner when the leader has a good motivation. I think if mum were doing it for herself to look good, she’d do a subpar job because her heart wasn’t in the project. But the great thing about her is that she always want to give her best in everything she does. If I can grow up to be half the person she is, I’d be quite happy!

Hi viewers online, I’m here to share my testimony about how I was helped to get my husband back. I was a cheat and my husband caught me several times. I tried fixing myself and each time I ended up cheating over and over again. I guess I didn’t realize what he meant to me until he had left me alone. I began to find a way to get him back but nothing seemed to work out perfectly until I came across an article about Dr Peter who helped a lot of people globally to get their relationships back. I made contact with him and he assured me that my husband will come back to me within 48 hours with his powerful magic for the materials needed for the work. Surprisingly, my husband came back home after 2 days saying that he still loves me and I swore never to cheat on him anymore. All thanks to Dr Peter. You can have a chat with him on

This post shows how English birthday culture has grown to include online messages, cards, and small gifts as signs of appreciation and connection.
I recently adapted a traditional blessing for a family birthday and it felt sincere.
One practical takeaway is to acknowledge group birthday wishes with a single thoughtful message rather than trying to thank everyone individually. (https://birthdaymarathiwish.net/)

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing lovely picture of Rinpoche’s mother. Pictures freeze moments in time, but memories last forever.Pictures of loved ones paints a thousand words, leave us as memories. She’s indeed beautiful. The bond between a mother and child is foundational, it’s sad that Rinpoche was not reconnected with Rinpoche’s mother after going through so much pain.

Interesting rich history and culture of this Chupzang Nunnery with their practice intact for hundreds of years .Chupzang Nunnery is a Tibetan Buddhist nunnery in the Gelug tradition located on the hill side, situated to the northwest of Sera Monastery north of Lhasa in Tibet, China. Originally founded as a small hermitage for monks in the mid-17th century by Trinlé Gyatso, who is a disciple of the Fifth Dalai Lama. It was then converted into an exclusive nunnery in 1984 and has since grown into one of the largest nunneries in the Lhasa Valley. The site’s historical significance stems from its early association with the Fifth Dalai Lama. During a visionary investigation, they discovered a self-arisen stone image of Shakyamuni Buddha. Now its enshrined in the nunnery’s lower temple. Today, as an autonomous monastery for 100 nuns, emphasizing practices such as Vajrabhairava and Vajrayogini. is a historical nunnery, belonging to Sera Monastery
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting post.

Having the opportunity to see those awesome stunning Holy Dorje Shugden statues located all over the world as mentioned in this post is a blessing. Merely by seeing these ten Holy Dorje Shugden Statues around the World in this post is a blessing. I had a great opportunity to take a glimpse into three of them. One is the personal possessions of the 5th Dalai Lama’s handmade Statue,at Kathmandu, Nepal. Not only once but twice during my trip there years back. It is believed that this is the first statue of Dorje Shugden kept at Phelgyeling Monastery. There’s another one at Trode Khangsar, Tibet and of course the one at Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong, Pahang. Merely by looking at those Holy Statues is a blessing in this blog. especially of those personal statues of High lamas.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Dungkar Monastery, located in the upper part of Yadong hillside about 13km away from Yadong County, Tibet. Built in the early 12th Century by a Geluk monastery, according to tradition it was founded by Lhai Metok, the daughter of Lha Lama Yeshe O. It is a branch of Dhankar Monastery which is one of Spiti Valley’s most iconic Buddhist sites, located dramatically on a cliff. It was the first Gelug monastery of that after it was entrusted to Kyabje Domo Geshe Rinpoche in 1901. Its ancient architecture, dating back centuries, and the panoramic views it offers make it a captivating spiritual and visual landmark. Dhankar village has a rich history once serving as both a fort and a monastery. The village has been a significant cultural and religious center for centuries, with its inhabitants traditionally living in close harmony with the monastic community. Dungkar Monastery also became the seat of a famous and respected Dorje Shugden oracle who was consulted by people from all over Tibet. This oracle could take trance of six different deities including Dorje Shugden and his ministers Kache Marpo and Namkar Barzin.
Reading this blog over and over again to understand better .As it is worth reading the whole history of such an interesting blog. The Monastery had evolved into a major spiritual center despite destruction and rebuilding over centuries. The monastery survived numerous destructions yet it still remains as today.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David sharing this interesting and details history of Dungkar Monastery.

Choosing to live a life on learning and practicing Dharma is a powerful, intentional decision that brings lasting happiness and purpose. Since nothing lasts forever, choosing to practice Dharma is the only way to find lasting value and peace. To live life to the fullest means embracing experiences, focusing on the present, overcoming fear, and finding joy in small moments. Living, learning, and practicing Dharma is considered by many spiritual traditions, particularly Buddhism, to be the most meaningful way to navigate life, as it transforms daily existence into a path toward inner peace, wisdom, and liberation from suffering. It is not just about rituals or religious dogma, but about transforming the mind, cultivating compassion, and acting with integrity in all situations.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing profound teachings.

nteresting story of the great historic Ashoka. He was called great because of his model rule based on peace and compassion that helped in unifying the culturally diverse empire. Ashoka was able to rule over the vast and diverse empire through a centralized policy of dharma. He favoured peace and tolerance and that administered public works and social welfare. He likewise patronized the spread of Buddhism and art throughout the empire. Under a centralised administration he was able to develop and promote Buddhism after walking across the battlefield, looking upon the death and destruction. He then experienced a profound change of heart, renounced war and, in time, converted to Buddhism, devoting himself to peace. Since then, Ashoka was recognized as one of the most fascinating ancient monarchs for his decision to renounce war using his peaceful efforts. Ashoka’s fame is largely due to his pillar and rock edicts left a lasting historical record. He is remembered as a model ruler, controlling a vast and diverse empire through peace and respect, with dharma at the centre of his ideology.
Thank you Rinpoche great sharing of a great man.

Ani Pema was a well-known Buddhist practitioner who spent some 51 years in solitary retreat. She accumulated great merit and powerful wisdom from decades. She accumulated great merit and powerful wisdom from decades of meditation . Ani Ngawang Pema was a student of H H Trulshik Rinpoche. The practice of deep, focused reflection and away from distractions, to foster profound self-awareness, offers the opportunity to deepen one’s practice in profound and lasting ways. Her story had inspired many others. When she was young and beautiful many rich famous families seek her marriage but she turn down. She chose to practice Dharma and monastery life instead. She preferred to stay in solitary meditation where nobody could see her. Soon she became a legend people, those who passed her small hut ask for blessing.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring post.

True story of how H H the Dalai Lama most fantastic escapes in history everyone should know the truth. How Dalai Lama was saved
following the advice of the great Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden.
Through the highly respected Panglung Oracle’s instruction given by Dorje Shugden. Dalai Lama managed to escape undetected through the Chinese army and over dangerous mountain terrain into India, safe and unharmed back in 1959.This true story is now in comic form where everyone reading it will get a better picture and knowledge of the escape. That’s worth reading as it comes in flipbook and image gallery format .

n Tibetan Buddhist preliminary practice offering 100,000 butter lamps to Vajra Yogini is very powerful practice for generating merit, purifying negativity, and advancing on the tantric path. It’s considered an excellent practice when doing continuous, dedicated offerings for everyone . We could do it ourselves in a retreat setting at home, offering many lamps each day. Butter lamps are traditionally offered to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Dharma protectors as a gesture of respect. It symbolize the light of wisdom for deep spiritual realization. There’s numerous benefits just by offering lights . Looking at the picture of the Vajra Yogini taken by Philip Yong in the butter lamp house at Tsem Ladrang Kathmandu simply awesome.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with explanation .

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
