Ganden Sumtseling Monastery the beautiful
(By Tsem Rinpoche)
Dear students and friends,
One of the things I like most about China and Tibet are the incredible Buddhist monasteries that were established centuries ago by the Emperors of China. One of the most beautiful, which I hope to visit one day, is Ganden Sumtseling Monastery in Yunnan province, China. Ganden Sumtseling (or Little Potala) was established by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century and was fully patronized by the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi, who was in power at that time. Emperor Kangxi visited the monastery during the constructions to make sure it was completed. This was very unusual for an Emperor to personally visit. He also funded the construction of this great monastery.
Tibetan Lamas have enjoyed a good relationship with the Chinese Emperors for hundreds of years, and this harmony brought much benefit to the people through the establishment of great monasteries such as Sumtseling Monastery… and for the continued growth of Dharma in Tibet and China during the last few centuries. My favorite part of this beautiful Sumtseling Monastery is the special chapel dedicated to Lord Manjushri. The Manjushri statue is beautiful. I hope to recreate this chapel to Manjushri in Kechara Forest Retreat one day soon.
I thought it would be nice to share with everyone a little bit about the history of this monastery, and the beautiful pictures of the monastery and its breathtaking surroundings. Take a look and if you have visited this monastery in the past, do share your experiences with us. The photographs I’ve blogged here are stunning to say the least-do enjoy and be blessed to view them. This should be on everyone’s bucket list to visit at least once in your life either for cultural or spiritual or both reasons. I will get myself over there one of these days for sure.

Ganden Sumtseling Monastery
Ganden Sumtseling or Songzanlin or Guihua Monastery is also known as “Little Potala Palace”. Sumtseling Monastery is located just outside the city of Zhongdian (later renamed to Shangri-la in 2001). It is the largest Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province. Established by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in 1679, the monastery was built during the rule of Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi, who fully patronized the development of the monastery. One of the most special features of the monastery is its blending of Tibetan and Chinese-style architecture.
Ganden Sumtseling Monastery is famed for its apolitical stance, and one of the most well known accounts of such a stance was when the monastery allowed the communist general He Long to pass through this area in one of his campaigns. However in 1959, like many other monasteries, Ganden Sumtseling was destroyed by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) during its invasion of Tibet. Since 1981, the situation of the monastery has changed and many of its structures and buildings have been restored to their previous glory.
At the peak of its past spiritual influence, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery was known to have been home to more than 2,000 monks! Today, it houses 700 monks in 200 associated houses.
The monastery is built 3,400 meters above sea level, making the temperature of the area relatively low all year round. Because of the high altitude, many visitors are advised to rest for a day in town to get acclimatized. The local authorities are promoting Shangri-la as a tourist destination so there are many lodging facilities in the city for visitors. Today, although the monastery is still an extremely holy place, it is also packed with tourists especially in spring and summer.
Dorje Shugden Chapels in Ganden Sumtseling Monastery
Ganden Sumtseling Monastery is made up of several Khangtsens. Khangtsens are similar to fraternity houses, and monks that come to live in the monastery are placed in Khangtsens based on the region they originate from in Tibet.
The existence of these Khangtsens is purely for convenience as people from different parts of Tibet speak different dialects and have different cultures. This is also why many Khangtsens have their own prayer halls and protector chapels, as the monks rely on different Dharma Protectors based on cultural differences.
Ganden Sumtseling Monastery has several Khangtsens that rely on Dorje Shugden as their main Dharma Protector, the two largest being Yang Tang and Chatreng Khangtsen. The monks of Sumtseling are free to practice any Dharma Protector they choose as the local authorities demand mutual respect and tolerance, in order to avoid unrest within the community. Below are pictures of several Dharma Protector Chapels (Tenkhang) from the various Khangtsens in Sumtseling.
Yang Tang Khangtsen’s protector chapel is famous for its hundreds of Dorje Shugden statues
Amazing Buddhist Art
Beautiful murals decorate the main hall of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. The monastery preserves ancient treasures of historical significance including scriptures written on palm leaves, gold-covered sculptures of Buddha Shakyamuni, and colorful murals painted by renowned Lamas depicting the life of the Buddha and many other Buddhist deities.
Breathtaking Architecture and Scenery
The main temple complex of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery was built in accordance with Tibetan traditional style lines. Atop the main building is a gilded copper roof, built to mirror the Potala Palace in Lhasa. It is for this reason that Sumtseling received its name “Little Potala Palace”. The other buildings that surround the main monastery building are Han Chinese style.

The Gedong Festival
The annual Gedong festival is held in Ganden Sumtseling Monastery on 29 November. Devotees gather to engage in a day of prayer and also to witness the religious mask dances known as “Cham Dance”, performed by the monks of the monastery. During this yearly event, the performing monks wear colorful costumes depicting deities, ghosts and animals.

Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, built in 1679, is the largest Tibetan Gelug Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province. It is also known as “Little Potala Palace” which was built according to the complex of Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. It is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan Province and also the most important monastery in southwest China. Amazing it was built at the foot of Foping Mountain with a magnificent view. It has been flourishing in repute as a Tibetan Art Museum. Well this monastery was established by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century. The Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi, funded the construction of this great monastery. For over hundreds of years, Tibetan Lamas and the Chinese Emperors have a very good relationship. With the building of monasteries , it has in fact benefited many people both Tibetans and the Chinese. I have been there few years back , love the stunning architecture of the monastery. Truly amazing. Feeling blessed and fortunate too saw Rinpoche’s pictures in the monastery.
Interesting read with those details.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing. It might help those who would like to visit such a beautiful monastery in future.
Beautiful Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, built in 1679, is the largest Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province. Known as little Potala to many locals and tourist. Well this magnificent group builidngs of the monastery is so simply amazing. The main structure built in Tibetan style has a gold-covered copper roof similar to the one at the Potala Monastery in Lhasa. I was there few years back , looking at it is a blessing. It looks like a castle, a walled complex with group buildings including living quarters for monks and high lamas. I was so fortunate when I was there the monks were doing prayers . Listening to the prayers , with joy then in a tranquil place to dwell my soul.Offered some offerings to those beautiful Buddhas statues. Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, a hot destination in Yunnan, have been attracting thousands of locals and tourist yearly. A place worthy visiting and going on pilgrimage.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Ganden Sumtseling (or Little Potala) was established by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in the 17th century and was fully patronized by the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi. Heard so much of the beauty of this Ganden Sumtseling Monastery so much so I visited last July with friends. On the way to this Little Potala monastery , my friends and myself saw a beautiful rainbow. Its so auspicious , we started our journey with rain fall, as we approached the monastery it stopped raining and a rainbow appeared. Its simply amazing and I couldn’t believe I made it there walking up more then a hundred steps to see the beautiful architecture building of Tibetan and Han design . As we reached the main monastery we could hear the monks chanting , doing puja as I listen to the melodies , it sound very familiar I came to realise they were doing the Seykem offering. I was over joy indeed and excitement feels the air. We then went round the monastery to have a look of the beautiful wall murals and so forth. The monastery is so rich with cultural and spiritual energies. On top of it , I was so excited and feeling blessed when I saw Rinpoche ‘s photo on one of the throne. Its makes my whole day wonderful even though my legs aches. After spending the whole morning at the monasteries, I felt wonderful and energised. Simply amazing seeing this beautiful monastery ourselves. We have the great privilege to make offerings at the Ganden Sumtseling monastery .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing and recalling my memories .
Dear friends,
Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.
You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.
Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.
May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden
This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.
The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama
Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.
After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.
The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.
His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.
Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.
Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.
The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 assistants of his mandala.
Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.
Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-
1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-
– Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
– Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
– Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
– Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
– Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.
2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.
3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.
4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.
5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.
6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.
7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.
These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

Great message every Tibetan especially must read!
Very breathtaking photo of Ganden Sumtselling Monastetry(established by Fifth Dalai Lama). It was really beautiful. This monastery is very special because it link with Emperor of Qing Dynasty, Kang Xi . Relationship within China and Tibet was consider good in that time. There is also a Dorje Shugden Chapel and it depicted that Dorje Shugden been practiced more than 100 years ago by 5th Dalai Lama.
I wish Dorje Shugden Ban will lift soon and plan to visit this monastery soon.
Thanks Rinpoche on this informative article sharing.
Jason
This truly a breathtaking monastery, not only for its architecture the statues that are in this monastery are also so lifelike and beautiful. Tibetan buddhism was initially, practiced by the Chinese elite, like most forms of Buddhism, only the elite had access to more advanced spiritual / buddhist techniques.
All this while I only knew of Yong He Gong housing Tsongkhapa’s statue now there is much more information about this very impressive monastery that was built by Kang Xi. Kang Xi was also known as an incarnation of Dorje Shugden.
Rinpoche is right, we are so blessed to set eyes on such beautiful scenery, rich culture and holy images of the precious Buddhas. It is quite amazing to see the real efforts and results of the Chinese authority to preserve and promote Tibetan culture and religion. Some of the most beautiful temples and monasteries I have seen are in China!
Yunnan is known to many from both the eastern and western worlds to be a paradise on Earth. I believe it is such because of its rich and long history with pure spiritual practice and way of life.
Thank you Rinpoche for being so generous with the beautiful images and stories.
Thanks Rinpoche and the blog team for sharing this very stunning Monastery in Yunnan.
I especially like Za La Ju Chapel, the main protector chapel. The costume of Karche Marpo and Namkar Barzin that stand on left and right really shows that the two main attendants are guiding the Lord, Dorje Shugden. The place is very blessed and by just looking at the photos, I feel like Dorje Shugden is really at the chapel. So beautiful.
The Little Potala is so beautiful and I also like the architecture that combines Tibetan and Han design, it’s so rich with cultural and spiritual energies.
May this beautiful monastery continues to grow for many decades to benefit and inspire more beings!
Thank you.
Amazing ! Gaden Sumtseling is so huge and beautiful. There are so many Buddha’s statues and the view are really stunning. It is great that the monastery of more than 300 years is preserved well.
This monastery uphold the Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden practise very well. I really wish to be able to visit Gaden Sumtseling one day.
Ganden Sumtseling Monastery is really spectacular and beautiful. Even though it was named ” The Little Potala”, I personally feel that this Monastery is way more stunning. In Yunnan China, Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, there is no restriction of practicing the Dharmapala Dorje Shugden. In fact there is a huge chapel dedicated to this protector. Every day, hundreds of monks and visitors are doing prayers and paying respect to this protector at Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. The restriction imposed by the Dalai Lama and Central Tibet Administration is simply doesn’t make sense. There are hundreds of thousand of people still continuing this practice despite the unlawful banned and discrimination imposed.
Gaden Sumtseling is truly a beautiful, stunning and grand monastery, and I would not have thought it was in Yunan, China! It is the largest Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province and it was established by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in 1679, this is a very important aspect about the monastery. And another important aspect is that… the monastery was built during the rule of Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi! Now isn’t Emperor Kangsi an emanation of Dorje Shugden??? This what’s amazing and special about this monastery!
Even from before H.H. The Dalai Lama and Dorje Shugden had such a close and strong connection. This confirms what it says in HH Trijang Rinpoche’s illusory play between HH the Dalai Lama and Dorje Shugden.
It is good news that China has helped with the rebuilding of this monastery and being very open to encourage and allow Tibetan Buddhist culture to continue, such as the Cham Dance. It looks like Tibetan Buddhism will be well preserved in China after all.
Hope I will have the merits to visit this historical and spectacular monastery.
Dear Rinpoche,
This is a very beautiful Monastery and after reading this article, I really hope one day I will have the merits to visit Ganden Sumtseling Monastery =)
Thank you again Rinpoche
With folded palms

The first thing that stood out is how scenic and grandiose Ganden Sumtseling Monastery looks. Ganden Sumtseling is also known as “Little Potala Palace” as it was built to resemble the original Potala Palace in Lhasa. It sits approximately 3,400 feet above sea level, which is considered relatively high altitude even for the seasoned trekker. Being the largest Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province, and heavily promoted by the local authorities, it is not surprising that the holy place is packed with tourists especially in spring and summer.
It is encouraging to learn that Ganden Sumtseling Monastery thrives in keeping the pure Gelug lineage alive as well as the proliferation of the 300-year old practice of Dorje Shugden. The monks of Sumtseling are free to practice any Dharma Protector they choose as the local authorities enforce mutual respect and religious freedom, as such we see a strong tradition of Dorje Shugden here, as a continuation of the lineage practice without facing suppression.
Dorje Shugden images are available around the monastery, in main prayer hall or altar, as well as in various chapels. In the Yang Tang Khangtsen’s protector chapel, there are hundreds of Dorje Shugden statues on display, making it a famous attraction. Another evidence of the prosperity of Dorje Shugden practice is the Ganza mural that adorns Yang Tang Khangtsen’s second protector chapel.
Why is Ganza mural significant? As this is the first time for me too to learn about Ganza, I will, therefore, quote from the article to share here “The Ganze is an offering of weapons and implements to the protector. It symbolizes fighting our negative karma and clearing obstacles that inhibit our spiritual growth. Symbolic offerings such as these are rare and only found in places where the people have great faith in the protector.”
It is so fortunate to be introduced to this grand sangha establishment and for me to observe, through the photos, the beautiful and intricate Tibetan Buddhist setup. Thank you, Rinpoche, for this sharing.
When I first opened this article, I was stunned by the beauty of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. Reading the history of this great monastery is an eye opener to realise that for so long in history the Emperors of China had shown great reverence to the Dalai Lamas of Tibet. What a shame that in this current day and age when China is once again a spectacle on the world stage, the Dalai Lama is still at odds with the Chinese Government.
Although destroyed during the invasion of Tibet by the PLA, the restoration is fantastic and authentic too. It is wonderful that China preserves the history of the great monasteries of Tibetan origin.
And to permit so much of Tibetan Buddhist culture and tradition to exist like the worship of any protector of choice and the Cham Dance.
One day I hope to have the merits to visit this historical and magical monastery.
It is good to read that this great monastery, Ganden Sumtseling still practice tolerance and mutual respect. The khangtsens have the right to propitiate whichever protector that was, by tradition, their protector. It is sad enough that his great monastery’s population has dwindled to a merely 700, don’t let it fall further away from by having schism within its walls.
It really is a beautiful monastery with a rich history. The Kangxi emperor had done a lot to spread the dharma. Let not this be forgotten just because of politics.
Beautiful Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, also called as ‘Little Potala Palace’ or Guihua Monastery. Looking stunning within a hilltop environment at a high altitude region over 3,300 meters. The whole monastery is in traditonal style with mysterious atmostphere.
Its such a beautiful place which i would like to visit seeing those beautiful statues of Dorje Shugden and Manjushri, antique Dorje Shugden thangka, wall murals would be wonderful and a dream for me.The monastery is full of treasures of golden figures of Buddha josses, golden lamps and so forth.Wow…those beautiful traditional costumes really so colourful and nice to see.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post and those beautiful pictures.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this comment made by Suzy on Rinpoche’s YouTube channel. Suzy has a unique opinion as to why His Holiness imposed the Shugden ban, one that corresponds to the Dalai Lama being Avalokiteshvara. Do you agree with her? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl-4lIwxph4&t=11s Anyway its welcome news to see more people embracing the practice despite the Tibetan leadership’s efforts to deny the practice.
What is the connection between the Panglung Tulku and the Panglung Kuten and Sumtseling Monastery?
I understand that Panglung Tulku is the head of one of this Khangtsen’s.
It’s amazingly beautiful! The monastery look so familiar to me because some of the designs and elements are from China which we are close to within Malaysia as a Chinese.
By looking at the photos, I can feel calm and peace. By combining the environment, landscapes, spiritual and inner peace, we can easily calm down our monkey minds and provide a good rest for our restless bodies.
Such a holy piece of land on earth, a great place for Buddhists & non-Buddhists. =)
Thank you very much Rinpoche for sharing this truly beautiful post on Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. These pictures are very interesting and beautiful. I feel really blessed and fortunate to see so many sacred statues of Lord Manjushri and Great Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. I hope Rinpoche’s wish to recreate this chapel to Manjushri in Kechara Forest Retreat will come true in the near future._/\_
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this beautiful post on the breathtakingly incredibly beautiful Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. I am filled with awe at what it represents at this moment in time.
One of the most beautiful Buddhist monasteries in Tibet and China must surely be the Gaden Sumtseling Monastery(also known as the “Little Potala Palace” located in the Yunnan province .It has such a powerful history and origin. Established by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama in 1679, the monastery was built during the rule of Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi, who fully patronized the development of the monastery. The Emperor personally visited the monastery during the constructions to make sure it was completed .One of the most special features of the monastery is its blending of Tibetan and Chinese-style architecture.
Named as a Ganden monastery by the 5th Dalai Lama, it preserves the pure doctrine of the Gaden Monastery founded by Lord Tsongkhapa. It is one of the most important Gelug monasteries that preserves the tradition of Dorje Shugden as the Protector of Je Tsongkhapa’s teachings.
The grandeur and magnificence of this monastery is seen in its six main structures which include eight monastic colleges! There are two main lamaseries which are surrounded by eight sub-lamaseries and dormitories for resident lamas and monk. The main gompa is a five-storey Tibetan-style building with the capacity to house more than 1500 monks.
The golden eight meter statue of Buddha Shakyamuni in the main Gompa and the eight gold-covered sculptures of Shakyamuni, which were made during the time of the 5th and 7th Dalai Lamas are among the many treasures of this monastery.
Sumtseling Monastery is steeped in Buddhist/Dharmic history, as is depicted in the many Buddhist treasures that are stored in this monastery. Many rare Buddhist scriptures written on palm leaves and also scriptures that were used by the great Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas of the past are still preserved in Sumtseling. This is also testimony to Emperor Kangxi’s dedication to preserving the treasures of Dharma.
Every holy item and feature here is well-crafted and ornate and grand-looking. The statues are so beautiful and majestic. The rarity and preciousness of this place lies among other things in that there are several Dorje Shugden chapels and many Dorje Shugden statues in this beautiful Gaden monastery. The beauty of it all is that the 5th Dalai Lama had this monastery built and his statue is there alongside the many Dorje Shugden statues!
The beautiful part about the construction of this monastery is that the Sth Dalai Lama joined forces with the benevolent Chinese Emperor Kangxi to build it! Say what you will, the fact remains that this monastery is testimony to the lovely chemistry and harmony between the 5th Dalai Lama, the Chinese Emperor Kangxi and the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden! The current situation of disharmony in the conflict over the practice of Shugden seems light years away from this monastery.
The monastery is famed for its apolitical stance. There are eight Khangstens represented in this monastery and 5 of the 8 practice Dorje Shugden. Hence, the many Dorje Shugden Chapels and Statues. There is also a lovely Manjushri Chapel with a breathtakingly beautiful Manjushri statue in the monastery! Today, there are 700 monks here that belong to 200 associated houses. Although the monastery is still an extremely holy place, it has become a top tourist attraction and is packed with tourists, especially in spring and summer!
Nonetheless, Emperor Kangxi’s sponsorship of Sumtseling continues to have an effect on the preservation of the Dharma. Instead of being another tourist destination, Ganden Sumtseling continues to be an active Buddhist monastery and the study and practice of Dharma remains strong there to this day. Pilgrims will see many study rooms which are designed for young monks from the age of five years old, studying the Buddhist canons and philosophies. The sacred energy of this place and its powerful historical background and extraordinary spiritual significance make it a must visit pilgrimage place for all of us.
Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa, Tibet
Over 400 years ago a great and learned lama Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was famed in Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and China for being very saintly and compassionate. He resided in his residence (Zimkhang Gongma Ladrang) in Drepung Monastery. His root guru was H.H. the Omniscient 4th Panchen Lama and his close dharma brother was the 5th Dalai Lama.
The 5th Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen had a very close and dharmic relationship and often went to receive teachings together from the 4th Panchen Lama. They were close in age. They both became very learned and well known. During this time, the Dalai Lama was enthroned as a Dharma King of Tibet. But more people went to see Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen for teachings, initiations and divinations. This made the attendants of the 5th Dalai Lama feel threatened that Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s fame might usurp the power of the 5th Dalai Lama. So they had a khata forced down his throat. At that moment, Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen dissolved his psychic winds and generated the wish to be a great guardian of Buddha and Tsongkapa’s teachings. As his consciousness dissolved, he entered ‘bardo’ as a dharma protector of the highest order (jikten depey sungma). Many signs were seen throughout Lhasa at this time and the earth was said to have shaken in Lhasa. This event was already predicted to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s previous incarnation when he was one of the 8 main disciples of Lord Tsongkapa the Supreme Master and he served Tsongkapa directly by building Gaden Monastery.
When the 5th Dalai Lama heard what his scheming and power-hungry attendants had done, he was very distressed. He was very sorry Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was murdered and dishonored as he was a great dharma master. The 5th Dalai Lama composed an apology to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. In Lhasa, tens of thousands gathered for the cremation of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s holy body. During the cremation, the 5th Dalai Lama’s apology was read out at which flames spontaneously arose from the body of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen commencing the cremation. From the body, during cremation, a powerful whirlwind of smoke tunneled into the sky for all to see as this was an indication Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s consciousness has arisen as the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. The Dharma Protector Setrap immediately recognized this new protector Dorje Shugden and ‘enthroned’ him as a powerful Dharma Protector in the realm of the Buddhas. From this, Setrap and Dorje Shugden are closely connected and very close working hand in hand always. After the cremation, the great 5th Dalai Lama built a Dorje Shugden chapel on the spot the cremation took place and named it Trode Khangsar. The 5th Dalai Lama commissioned the statue of Dorje Shugden in this chapel and had monks installed in the chapel to do continuous propitiations to Dorje Shugden. Trode Khangsar Chapel was a commemoration to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who was wronged and also a celebration of his consciousness arising as the World Peace Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.
This Trode Khangsar Chapel still exists now in Lhasa where many make pilgrimages there. It is in good condition and was recently renovated. It is over 400 years old and a testimony to the respect the Great 5th Dalai Lama had to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who arose as Dorje Shugden.
I have visited this holy chapel in Lhasa years back. I’ve never heard of it till I was in Lhasa and by chance, I was told about it which I was happy to visit. I could not find the place but strangely a bunch of pilgrims from Amdo told me they would show me how to get there in Lhasa.
This short video is a short clip of this holy Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa today commemorating Dorje Shugden, built by the great 5th Dalai Lama. The great 5th Dalai Lama even composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden which is still available today and we can recite to invoke the blessings, protection, and assistance of World Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

The 5th Dalai Lama’s Prayer to Dorje Shugden
HUM
Though unmoving from the sphere of primordial spontaneity,
With wrathful turbulent power, swifter than lightning,
Endowed with heroic courage to judge good and bad,
I invite you with faith, please come to this place!
Robes of a monk, crown adorned with rhinoceros leather hat,
Right hand holds ornate club, left holds a human heart,
Riding various mounts such as nagas and garudas,
Who subdues the mamos of the charnel grounds, praise to you!
Samaya substances, offerings and torma, outer, inner and secret,
Favourite visual offerings and various objects are arranged.
Although, previously, my wishes were a bit dense,
Do not stop your powerful apparitions, I reveal and confess!
Now respectfully praising with body, speech, and mind,
For us, the masters, disciples, benefactors and entourages,
Provide the good and avert the bad!
Bring increase like the waxing moon in spiritual and temporal realms!
Moreover, swiftly accomplishing all wishes,
According to our prayers, bestow the supreme effortlessly!
And like the jewel that bestows all wishes,
Always protect us with the Three Jewels!

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this magnificent and holy Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. It is breathtaking and “wow” looking at all the photos on this Monastery.
The buildings, architecture & scenery of the Monastery, the beautiful Manjustri Statues, various Dorje Shugden chapels, the ancient Buddhist Arts drawing, as well as the sharing of “Cham Dance” in the Gedong Festival. Truly amazing and would really hope I can visit this monastery one day!
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing those amazing pictures and beautiful post on Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. One of the most special features of the monastery is its blending of Tibetan and Chinese-style architecture which i admired. Its just amazing looking at those beautiful murals as well. The monastery is so rich in history for one to visit.

Its is nice to see this beautiful Arts and architecture in Ganden Sumtsling monastery.. Thank you for sharing it with us Rinpoche..
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing this beautiful post on Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. After reading this post, this monastery goes into my bucket list of places to visit before I kick the bucket. I just wonder how long would it take to visit all the Protector Chapels in this monastery complex.
Thank you once again.
Beautiful monastery and so amazing to see the sights of Ganden Sumtseling. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us amazing pictures of buddhas and Dorje Shudgen.
“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche
I been to Gaden Sumtseling monastery 2 years ago. I remembered I visited this monastery three days in a row as I just stayed right beside this monastery. Gaden Sumtseling is breathtakingly beautiful and holy. It’s always packed with tourists as this is the most famous Buddhist monastery in Yun Nan province. I was fortunate enough to have a local friend in Shangri-la to tour me around in this monastery.
When you walk up from the 146 stairs, you will see the two main Gompa Jikang and Zhacang on your left and right. The buildings are beautifully ornamented by Tibetan architetural building style and a touch of Han Chinese style.
There are total 8 khangtsens in this monastery. 5 out of 8 Khangtsen are practicing Dorje Shugden as main protector, they are Za Laju, Zhaya, Zhuo, Yangtang and Chatreng. Not all are open for public to visit.
Gaden Sumtseling is definitely the place worth visit at least once in your lifetime 🙂
Wow, thank you Karen for sharing your visit to Gaden Sumtseling Monastery especially on the different Khangtsens. From your sharing, 5 out of 8 Khangtsen are practicing Dorje Shugden as their main protectors.
I really like the harmony and mutual respect between each Khangtsen on the protector practice despite the ban. I saw that there are the statue of the HH the 5th Dalai Lama in Gaden Sumtseling Monastery too. If Dorje Shugden will harm HH Dalai Lama, why would the 5th Dalai Lama built a monastery that has Dorje Shugden practice? If Dorje Shugden can be practiced here, why can’t it be practiced in other monastery that follows HH Dalai Lama? For me, it is just not logical at all to ban Dorje Shugden.
I pray that HH the 14th Dalai Lama will lift the ban on Dorje Shugden soon and I can see this harmonious scene of various Dharma Protector including Dorje Shugden are practiced together soon in other Tibetan Monasteries around the world.
Thank you Rinpoche for giving us the chance to lay eyes on this grand monastery and all its beautiful Buddha Images. Wow, Dorje Shugden is everywhere!!! I rejoice that the Chinese people will receive the blessings and protection of the perfect protector of our time – Dorje Shugden as the nation rise and impact the world.
It is amazing and inspiring that the leadership (Kangxi) would invest much care, time, effort and resources to build such a large monastery to protect and bless the people of the land. Kangxi is renowned for being a great Emperor and during his reign, the country experienced the longest period of peace and prosperity. This should tell us that spiritual wealth is also essential for tangible / worldly riches.
Thank you again for this beautiful post!
Breathtakingly beautiful. The buildings are so grand and the statues are so alive and rich.
Hope that one day I will have the opportunity to visit.
Ganden Sumtseling Monastery is so beautiful and majestic looking. The architecture and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking!!!!
Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing all these beautiful pictures.

Dear Rinpoche
Thank you for this post. The pictures are wonderful and this will be a place I want to visit. I love the various kangtsen protector chapels. Wouldn’t it be lovely if we had a chapel filled with little Dorje Shugden statues in Kechara?
very pretty murals
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the beautiful pictures of Ganden Sumtseling Monastery. My wife, Lee Lin and I were blessed to be able in 2014 to visit the Monastery situated at Shangri-la, Yunnan Province, after a 4-hour drive from Lijiang. The Monastery is really beautiful, ornately decorated and so serene. It has a commanding view of the surrounding countryside – well worth the climb up those steep steps of the ‘Little Potala’. We gave ourselves about 4 days at Lijiang to acclimatise to the higher altitude before ascending to Shangri-la – thus we did not really suffer from any altitude sickness. Overall the visit to the Monastery was the highlight of the trip to Shangri-la. It would be excellent if Kechara can organise a mini pilgrimage to visit and recite prayers at the Sumtseling Monastery.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these beautiful picture, the monastery is so grand every chapel look so holy and statutes so well make so bless to look at all these picture.
Very nice, and very wonderful photos of this monastery. I really like the giant Manjushri Statue :). Would be septacular to view these in person. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche. 🙂
