Wealth Box Puja

Nov 1, 2015 | Views: 5,841

Dear students and friends,

In June 2015, I blogged about the Wealth Box project that we were planning to do in Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR). Now fast forward a few months later, and I am glad to announce that the Wealth Box has been installed and the consecration pujas have been done by Venerable Panglung Kuten himself, the official oracle of Dorje Shugden for over 30 years now.

I would like to thank everyone who was involved in making this project a success as I know so much effort, planning, organising and arranging was put towards preparing the offerings, making the Wealth Vases, receiving accurate instructions, and even learning up the Yangdup puja which includes the set-up and rituals and all that.

Below I would like to share a write-up about how the Wealth Box was made from the beginning to the conclusion. It has a lot of information about this beneficial ritual which generates the energy to acquire resources for the proliferation of Dharma. I know there were many people who were unable to be present physically to volunteer, but are still interested to know what happened and also many people who contributed their precious items to add to the collective energies of this project. So I am sharing with you here how it was made.

I wish and pray that may everyone be filled with abundance, especially spiritual abundance.

Sarva Mangalam
Tsem Rinpoche

Kechara’s Wealth Box

Written by the Yangdup Team

First and foremost, we would like to thank our Spiritual Guide, H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche for always providing us a wonderful platform for us to create infinite spiritual and positive abundance.

The Wealth Box project has been a wonderful experience for all of us. As this is the first time we made one for Kechara, much preparations and discussions were held to ensure only the best efforts were made for this project, and that all of the work would be recorded down for future generations to learn from. In Tibetan Buddhism, having a wealth box helps the sponsors, organisation and the people involved in the organisation to attain abundance both materially and spiritually. We absolutely felt this positive energy from the beginning of the project as we received an abundance of volunteers and sufficient sponsors that allowed this project to materialize so quickly.

The Yangdup team who were tasked to oversee the completion of the project was formed after a short audience with Rinpoche in early June. Within a few days, a skilled carpenter was engaged to construct the Wealth Box in Kechara Forest Retreat (KFR), and the acquisition process of the items needed to create Wealth Vases to go into the Wealth Box had begun.

Making Wealth Vases from Scratch

Wealth Vases are an essential component in a Wealth Box. Similar to the ones made in the monasteries, the Yangdup team thought it would be very auspicious to create our own Wealth Vases in-house instead of using ones imported from the monasteries. By making our own Wealth Vases, not only do we learn the methods and techniques of producing one, but we also create the causes to be a Dharma institution and monastery because we conduct similar activities to that of Gaden Monastery itself. This is aligned with our aim to be a centre where the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa can flourish for a long time.

The bronze vases for the Wealth Vases had to be sourced from abroad before we could begin the process of transforming this ordinary vase into a Wealth Vase. The extensive process involved the following:

  1. Painting the vases yellow/gold

A total of 64 vases were spray-painted with a gold color. Although spray-painting may sound simple, there are many factors that we had to take into consideration to ensure the end product turned out perfect such as the weather (humidity and rain made it challenging to dry the paint quickly), lighting, as well as training our volunteers in the proper techniques of spray-painting to avoid the paint from dripping from the surface of the vase.

Auspicious designs drawn onto the Wealth Vases

  1. Drawing and hand-painting auspicious symbols

All designs on the vases were penciled on the surface of the spray-painted vase, and later a selection of auspicious colors were added to the designs. The auspicious designs are traditionally painted on Wealth Vases according to scriptures and every single design has a significance in bringing abundance to the owner of this blessed Wealth Vase.

Wealth Vases being painted and prepared by Kechara volunteers for the Wealth Box

  1. Lacquering the vases

After the hand-painted works were done and dried, the vases were then lacquered for a beautiful glossy effect and to protect the artwork.

  1. Cleaning the vases

After the lacquer dried, the insides of the vases were carefully cleaned and purified with incense. As per tradition and scripture, a layer of saffron water mixed with wangla (traditional Tibetan glue) was coated inside the vase before any items were inserted.

Silks of five colors and an embroidered double dorje to seal the Wealth Vases

  1. Filling the vases

Hundreds of items were inserted into the vase. Each item was prepared from scratch, packed neatly into yellow paper and labelled clearly. For a full list of the items inserted into the Wealth Vase, please scroll down to the “What Is Inside the Wealth Vases” section.

Kechara volunteers sealing the Wealth Vases

  1. Sealing the vases

Silks of five different colors (blue, red, green, white and yellow) were then cut into square pieces and the edges sewn for a neat finish. A double dorje symbol was also embroidered onto the yellow color silk. These five colored silks were then stacked on top of each other, with the yellow silk being at the top most. They were then used to cover the lid of the Wealth Vase. A string was tied around the neck of the vase to hold the coloured silks in place, and knotted at the front of the vase. A wax seal was then used to seal the Wealth Vase.

  1. Pujas

An extensive soongdroop and rabney puja was held to consecrate the Wealth Vases before they were placed inside the Wealth Box.

Preparing the Wealth Box

The rule of thumb when creating a Wealth Box is to offer all that is precious in abundance. A plain wooden box is less than ideal. Therefore the first step of preparing the wooden box (so that it is fit to be converted into a Wealth Box) was to offer gold on the inner surface of the wealth box. More than 15,000 gold leaves were carefully glued onto the interior of the Wealth Box, a process which took about a week to complete.

Below is a brief explanation of how the Wealth Box was prepared:

  1. Gold leaves

More than 15,000 gold leaves were used to line the interior of the Wealth Box. Because gold leaves are delicate, the process was done carefully and took over a week to complete.

  1. Painting auspicious symbols

After the gold leaves were done, the doors on the outside of the Wealth Box were painted with a bowl of jewels and a pair of jewel-spitting mongoose. This is traditionally painted on wealth boxes according to the scriptures.

Lhari and pearl curtains installed in the Wealth Box

  1. Installing hooks inside the wealth box

Several hooks were installed inside the wealth box for two purposes, they are:

  • To hold 4 bags known as yangku

Each yangku contains a different class of items such as coins and precious materials like gold and silver.

  • To hang pearl curtains all around the wealth box
  1. Eight petal lotus brocade

Nine special embroidered eight-petal lotus brocades were made to be put on the base of wherever the Wealth Vases would be placed.

The Sealing Process

After a month of preparations, it was finally time to consecrate and seal the Wealth Box. A three-day long puja known as the Yangdup Puja took place from 17th to 19th of July 2015. On the first day, a Soongdrup and Rabney puja was conducted, and on the third and last day a Tsog puja. The pujas were led by His Eminence the 7th Panglung Kuten and a group of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s students, whereby all of the pujas were done in a traditional manner.

Choje-la conducted the three days of pujas required to seal the Wealth Box

On the final day of the puja, before the Wealth Box was closed, the Eight Auspicious Signs, Seven Royal Emblems and Eight Auspicious Substances were taken out on a procession around the prayer hall, blessing all that it touched with abundance in both material and spiritual growth.

It was the first time that Kechara has ever conducted such an extensive puja, and from now on we will be continuing this puja on a yearly basis to re-energize the Wealth Box.

We would like to thank all who have contributed in kind and in effort to make this project a success.

How You Can Continue to Contribute

Missed the making of the Wealth Box and its ceremony? It is not too late to be involved with this project. Here are some areas where you can be a part of this blessed project:

  • Sponsor a Wealth Vase in the Wealth Box
  • Invite home a Kechara made Wealth Vase
  • Sponsor the upkeep of the Wealth Box. On a yearly basis, perishable items such as food, tormas, herbs and medicines need to be replaced. The Wealth Box will also need an annual rejuvenating puja, for which we will need to invite learned Geshes and monks from the monasteries to conduct such an extensive pujas, whose trip will also require sponsorship
  • We also need earth and water from around the world (especially holy places), being collected on an ongoing basis. This will be added to the Wealth Box once a year. Please refer here (https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/kechara-13-depts/get-involved-in-the-wealth-box-project-in-kfr.html) to learn how you can contribute earth and water to this Wealth Box.

Please contact Beng Kooi (beng.ooi@kechara.com) or Pastor Jean Ai (elena.khong@kechara.com) for more information on any of the above.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us what is a wealth vase and a wealth box. It is not easy to find information about Tibetan Buddhism especially the ritual part. We might have heard of a wealth vase but most of us don’t know what is inside.

The process of making the wealth vase is not easy at all especially the ingredients part. Some of the ingredients are very rare, the Kecharians are really good at sourcing all of them. People who are involved in making the wealth vases are very lucky. Not many people have the chance to get involved in such meritorious activity as making wealth vase is not something people do every day!

The making of a wealth vase is not simple, from the preparation to the completion of it, it takes quite a bit of time too. Knowing how a wealth vase is made, we will now appreciate it more. It also assures us that the wealth vase available for people to invite from Kechara are made according to the tradition, not just a vase.

Thank you, Yangdup team for this excellent sharing. Really amazing to see so many precious items are being consecrated into Kechara Wealth Box. And very lovely to see a host of kind sponsors involved in the Wealth Box project. It is through this thorough post that I have learnt that having a wealth box, in Tibetan Buddhism, helps the sponsors, organization and the people involved in the organization to attain abundance both materially and spiritually. Those who were involved in the preparatory work and sponsorship would be very blessed. May everyone gains inner and outer wealth.

  4. Fong on Jul 8, 2016 at 6:40 pm

So much effort and intent put into collecting the various items to be put into the wealth vase and the wealth box. So kind of the Panglung Kuten to personally combine everything and fill the vases.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this process and even letting us know in detail the items that went in.

  5. KB Thapa on Jan 14, 2016 at 8:28 pm

It was really amazing see Panglung Kuten la come all the way here to teach us About wealth vase. He very Kind and compassante . We all have seen how hard everyone worked on this with harmony as a result Kechara is growing and benefiting so many people. Thank you Rinpoche for the article it is very easy to understand all the information on the wealth vase..

  6. JP on Dec 5, 2015 at 4:16 pm

We are very lucky to have the 7th Panglung Kuten teach us on the intricacies of making wealth vases and wealth box for the overall benefits of Kechara and our members. The entire process is likened to a retreat because awareness to detail is required.

It is one of the effective methods of creating the cause to increase our spiritual and material abundance. Spiritual abundance that leads to material abundance is better for a person because with the wisdom, the person will not degenerate with material abundance. It is common for people to be distracted when they obtain material wealth.

Kechara is at the level of growth where abundance of resources is necessary so that we can continue to build more facilities in order to reach out to more people who have the affinity to learn the Gelugpa tradition of Buddhism and have an opportunity to realise Enlightenment.

Aligned to our vision of creating local Buddhist teachers and ritual masters for many generations to come, we can now teach the art of making wealth vases and wealth box.

Volunteering for this project was indeed a very special experience for me and my family. Watching the video brings back many sweet memories as it was a wonderful learning process for me and great friendships were formed during the long hours working together. Thank you for the video documenting the whole process beautifully and also the write-up that allows me to recap whatever I might have forgotten or learn bits that I might have missed out during the process.

I sincerely thank Rinpoche, Choje-la and Beng Kooi for this rare and precious opportunity to be a part of this auspicious historical event. May the Wealth Box bring Kechara and KFR all the right resources to grow from strength to strength and succeed.

Congratulations to H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, Chojela, the Yangdup Team and all those involved, for the successful completion of the Wealth Box project for Kechara House. One can see that a lot of preparation and effort have gone into the accomplishment of the project. For me, this project has great educational value and thank you for documenting the whole process from beginning to end. Great team work!

The concept of rebirth has a long association with Buddhism. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to the teaching that the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called saṃsāra. One will begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. What they are reborn as depends on their actions in their previous life rather kamma. As a Buddhist we should believe in rebirth but still many people don’t . Buddha taught us that choices of rebirth make a difference and can shape many lifetimes. Buddhists believe that nothing that exists is permanent and everything will ultimately cease to be. There is a belief in rebirth

Against the odds two inspiring nuns fought all the way to become ordained, fighting for their rights to practice Buddhism . Interesting read of how they went through , bringing equality for women in Thailand. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged female monks, have been defying the tradition getting ordained overseas, in Sri Lanka or India. Buddhist women have been fighting for years for equality and social acceptance in Thailand. They just can’t be ordained by Thai monks. Ven. Dhammananda, 68 year old former university lecturer and activist became Thailand’s first Theravadin bhikkhuni after going the odds. Inspiring read biography on Ven. Dhammananda and Ven. Dr. Lee. They had gone through great hardships, discrimination and against the many odds in bringing equality to women in Buddhism in Thailand.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great inspiration post.

The unseen things are spiritual realities that are eternal and invisible to our physical eye. There are many forces and phenomena that are not visible to the naked eye. There are many things that humans cannot see yet there are some could see. For what is can be seen is only. Things do exist even we can’t see, believing their existence is our choice. Things that we can’t see in the world opens up a curiosity and exploration by some. Whether through scientific inquiry, or spiritual exploration, the pursuit of knowledge about the unseen can lead to profound insights about ourselves and the universe.
Malacca City is the historic capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in Malaysia serving as a link between east and west for over 500 years. Famous for breath-taking sights with rich heritage, ancient dark culture and history with many old centuries buildings with an interesting past and a colourful ghost story. For that reason alone it is worth visiting as is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its well-preserved historical center. There’s many historical mansions been passed down generation to generations and with many ghostly sighting by the locals and visitors. There’s the reason many unseen beings loitering and attached to these places. Such an interesting and incredibly creepy watching the video in this blog host by Li Kim. Li Kim had done a great work all along with her team to share with readers about our historic Malacca .
Thank you Rinpoche and Li Kim for this sharing.

Vajrayogini symbolizes the wisdom of all enlightened beings and embodies the impulse of inspiration that drives the Buddhas to attain the perfect enlightenment. Vajrayogini is one of the most effective practices for people today. We can make offerings such as gold or jewel offerings and so on. The offering of gold helps us to collect merits, spiritual attainments, gain a deeper connection to Vajrayogini. It also creates the causes to attain a Buddha’s body.
Make Offerings to Vajrayogini in Kechara Forest Retreat at Bentong is such an meritorious way for us to collect merits. All thanks to our Guru having conceptualised the idea of having a statue of Vajrayogini for everyone . Recitation of Vajrayogini mantra can be a powerful tool for self-transformation, healing and liberation from samsara.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing with details explanation .

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this insightful article. Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way. What ever matter to us at the time of death is nothing. In the end, it’s not the years in our life that count it’s what you leave behind that matters. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. Learning Dharma and practicing dharma is the our choice that’s matter. Some of the key points to take notes, read, study the Lam Rim and apply it, engage in Sadhana daily and consistently. No one will help us at the moment of death but ourselves. Spiritual practicing is the best choice.

Well the size of Buddha statues in Tibetan Buddhism is important because it represents the Buddha’s immense ability and vast knowledge. Hence the Buddha statues hold the symbol of satisfaction within, peace and happiness. They are a symbol of inspiration for every human being. When we focus on the Buddha statues, it gives us inner peace that our mind, our heart and our soul gets enlightened.
We have are so fortunate seeing and circumambulating where the 9-foot Dorje Shugden statue and with 500 mantra stones engraved with Dorje Shugden’s sacred mantra. As Rinpoche had said before the bigger and more Buddha statues helps in planting seeds of enlightenment in people’s mind-streams. It also help us to generate as much merit and purify as much karma as possible. Merely by seeing all those big statues at Kechara Forest Retreat is a blessing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

The 4th Tagpu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub, most commonly known as Tagpu Dorje Chang, was a highly accomplished yogi Highly attained lama who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas and even travel astrally to receive direct teachings from them. His recognised line of incarnations stem all the way back to the 14th Century. He is generally regarded as such amongst Gelug lineage holders. He spent most of his time in a hermitage located above Sera Monastery, gave teachings and transmitted many vital practices and lineages to his foremost student Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Besides receiving the complete instructions of Dorje Shugden’s practice, Tagpu Dorje Chang had many other mystical experiences throughout his lifetime. Interesting read biography of a highly accomplished mahasiddha lama.

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.
He was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia years back giving an enthralling Dhamma talk on the timeless teachings of Ajahn Chah.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

My Dharma boy (left) and Oser girl loves to laze around on the veranda in the mornings. They enjoy all the trees, grass and relaxing under the hot sun. Sunbathing is a favorite daily activity. I care about these two doggies of mine very much and I enjoy seeing them happy. They are with me always. Tsem Rinpoche Always be kind to animals and eat vegetarian- https://bit.ly/2Psp8h2

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. 7 years ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
