Shirley’s Himalayan inspired home!
On the 22nd of January, one of my student Shirley Maya Tan was interviewed on the interior design of her home by celebrity host Wong Chui-Ling (also known as Angel Wong). It was on Jiayu’s D’Style TV programme where Shirley got to share her love of Moroccan and Tibet Himalayan art, where she personally infused it with designs and colours of her Baba and Nonya heritage.
When the TV show producers were scouting out for homes to feature, they were looking for one with a slight twist. Shirley, being a media personality herself, always exuded pizzazz and charisma making those connected with her in the media scene know that her home would be an interesting one!
Like Shirley, the people of Malaysia are naturally diverse. They are able to incorporate all of their beautiful cultures which heavily influences their upbringing and lifestyle into their home. As a Chinese and a Baba-Nonya who spent most of her years traveling overseas, Shirley has a perspective different from most people. You can tell from the video that she loves very bright and fun things, but the overall ambiance is toned down from the spiritual pieces around her home.
I love Shirley’s holy three feet Tsongkapa Statue she invited in her home. It shows her good taste, devotion and also her genuine wish to connect with the Divine. Good for Shirley…lovely home. Lovely combination of contemporary home with something ancient yet beautiful.
Enjoy the video and spot the many, many products from Kechara Paradise throughout the 7 minute clip!

Wow……such a beautiful and spacious house that belong to Shirley Maya Tan. Her holy three feet Tsongkapa Statue is amazing that combine well with her wall colour. She even infused her home with Moroccan and Tibet Himalayan art which she love most. As she comes from a Baba and Nonya heritage, she added Malaysia batik as well. Truly a Malaysian of mixed culture and successful lady.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
Shirley made the right choice in choosing Malaysia as her permanent home, although she has many choices to stay overseas if she wanted to. Malaysia is a country of multilingual people. Since she like to decorate her house with Tibetan Himalayan and Moroccan Art. There is no problem for her getting them in Malaysia now,. Kechara with its many outlets and Kechara Discovery can always source for her. There are Thankas and framed Tibetan Art pieces of Dieties which can be explained by Rinpoche. We also have a very good Artist who can reproduced the Art pieces. And that is our talented Artist Margaret Lee.
I’ve been to Shirley’s house before and upon stepping in, I felt really comforted by the non-fussy, simplistic and almost zen-like ambiance.
I like how she “decorates” her house up with really beautiful Nepalese and Indian dharmic pieces.
It really shows how even if you’re not spiritually-inclined, how all these items can really make your homes beautiful just by being so well-made and artistic on its own.
How wonderful for Shirley to support Kechara Paradise by buying of all those gorgeous items from there!
Lovin’ your home! 🙂
Wow, aunty Shirley’s house looks very nice. I like the Tsongkhapa Statue. Thank you Rinpoche, for sharing the video. I really liked it I think it will be quite cool for many people to have Himalayan inspired houses.
Thank you so kindly, Rinpoche.
Truth be told, the one who really has great taste is not me but Ruby and Kechara Paradise. Actually, it’s really Ruby because she buys all the stuff for Kechara Paradise! Ruby has been so gracious and kind to help me pick out the right items to enhance my home and to pair them with my existing holy images. She is truly a multi-talented lady. So, anyone who walks into any Kechara Paradise store can be rest assured that all the items are carefully selected, of quality and truly unique. So, I am deeply appreciative of Ruby and Kechara Paradise for dressing up my place that exudes spirituality chic.
In my opinion, Tsongkhapa stole the whole show! That particular Tsongkhapa statue is very special and sits right in the middle of the room as if we are all holding a private audience with the Supreme Master. It feels truly wonderful to come home to this every single day.
No matter what happens throughout the day and how hectic the day can get, the minute I step through the doors, I am calmed by the sheer beauty and blessings of all the holy images in my home. That makes all the difference in the world.
So, I thank Ruby and Kechara Paradise yet again because I have a beautiful spiritual abode because they made it possible.
And lastly, thank you Rinpoche for always giving us creative and innovative ideas to bring spirituality into every aspect of our lives. What Rinpoche says is true, Dharma is life and it should always be lived and practised on a daily basis.
Have a wonderful day, Rinpoche!
