Pineal Gland
By Jace Chong
A near-death experience (NDE) is a personal experience associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations including detachment from the body, feelings of levitation, total serenity, security, warmth, the experience of absolute dissolution, and the presence of a light.
Coming back to the physical body completes the process of NDE. He/she remembers what happen without the presence of the physical body. Cases happened to people that were clinically death, or near death.
There are many common NDE characteristics including seeing oneself from top or different angles, walking through a tunnel of light, overwhelming with love, meeting with deceased family members some even see God, or deities, some were told “not ready” or “it’s not your time” yet and wake up in physical body again.
This global phenomenon attracts many science researchers, physiology and phychology doctors to search for logical explanations since many decades ago.
Dr. Rick Strassman (born February 8, 1952 in Los Angeles, California) is a medical doctor specialized in psychiatry with a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology research. After twenty years of intermission, Dr. Strassman was the first person in the United States to undertake human research with psychedelic, hallucinogenic, or entheogenic substances.
Dr. Strassman’s studies, taking place between 1990 and 1995 in the General Clinical Research Center of the University of New Mexico Hospital, aimed to investigate the effects of N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT).
According to Dr. Strassman, “After death, decomposing pineal tissue might empty DMT directly into the spinal fluid, allowing it to reach the brain’s sensory and emotional centers and causing residual awareness.”
DMT is released by a pinecone shaped gland on the back portion of the third cerebral ventricle of the brain, it’s called Pineal Gland which also lies in-between the two halves of the brain. Pineal Gland is located in between the 2 eyes, so it’s often known as the third eye.
There are seven Chakras in our bodies and the pineal gland is the 6th one. All of the chakras should be balanced for the optimal performance of the body and the mind. The activation of the 6th Chakra reaches its potential, which includes clairvoyance, psychic abilities, imagination, and dreaming.
On the other hand, Dr. Strassman refers to DMT as the “spirit molecule” because its effects include many features of religious experience, such as visions, voices, disembodied consciousness, powerful emotions, novel insights, and feelings of overwhelming significance. During the project’s five years, he administered approximately 400 doses of DMT to nearly five dozen human volunteers.
More than half of Dr. Strassman’s volunteers reported profound encounters/interaction with non-human beings while in a dissociated state. Dr. Strassman has conjectured that when a person is approaching death or possibly when in a dream state, the body releases DMT in a relatively large amount, mediating some of the imagery reported by survivors of near-death experiences.
Besides that, in Dr. Strassman’s research, he discovered that the figure ‘49’ might tell the relationship between spiritual practices and human biology, where pineal gland releases its first burst of DMT 49 days after conception. This is also the exact moment when an embryo becomes a fetus and the gender of the baby is determined.
Chinese funerals traditionally lasts for at least 49 days. The Tibetan Book of the Dead states that it takes 49 days for a recently deceased mind to travel from one physical body into the next. It also contains 49 days worth of specific passages for friends and family to read aloud to assist the deceased in their transition. 49 days after Easter is Pentecost, the day when “tongues of fire” came into the temple and rested upon the heads of the elders.
Recently, there have been more scientific researches that are able to prove some of the unexplainable phenomenons in the past which were stated by the enlightened beings such as Buddha Himself.

Third eye affect is not something mystical but part of our body reaction when DMT is released. For normal people like us this will only happen after death.
What amazed me is the great meditators can experience this by controlling their chakra as spineal Gland is actually chakra 6. That also mean our brain is truly powerful. By meditation and practices we can achieve full power such releasing DMT as and when we want.
What we believe in spirituality is nothing mystical but something scientifically exists in our body and it’s a natural ability that we have since we were born.
Interesting article to explain more human brain capacity and ability what can achieve. Our third eyes or pineal gland can exicise too spiritual practice like buddhism, lord buddha and many master at the pass from different religion has master it. Now scientist yet to experimenting this process.
Buddhist master through dead meditation experience the dead process and can tell clearly what is going on when we are near dying. I am glad to know more and learn more different expect of possibility about our human mind. As buddhist practice, we are focus more practice wisdom and compassion, so when dead coming, we are not attach to our physical body because our karma is determined what is our next good or bad rebirth
The full potential and abilities of human brain has yet to be fully discover. If we spend times and put in efforts in training our brains , we could get unexpected result.
Nothing is impossible, it’s just difficult.⚜️
What this article holding me on was, the pineal gland was one of the seventh chakras in our body. Chakra is a vital energy that resides in our body for healing of sickness, disease and mind as well. Meditation is the way to activate these chakras and I believed some people have psychic abilities or clairvoyance could be on these practice before or due to their previous karma or reincarnation. Hence, that is why more retreats and meditations were recommended for spirituality.
Using chemical induced drugs to alter the state of mind bringing it to a higher level of consciousness are only temporary and may cause dependency on the drugs and users may suffer the side effects. Great meditators like Buddhist practitioners are able to enjoy this bliss on a perpetual basis through their meditation. This is one of the many benefits as they embark on their spiritual journey to full enlightenment. Scientists should research more on this rather than on mind altering drugs that being more harm than good.
It’s intriguing to know that how ancient masters already mastered the way to handle The Third Eye and what we scientifically may well refer as Pineal Gland. How we managed to find this is another level for discussion all together. How we even have dejavu is already one myth on how our minds and body works. Fascinating to know…
It’s interesting from some other article also mentioned that throughout ancient history the pinecones have served as a symbolic representation of the Human Enlightenment, the “Third Eye” and the pineal gland. The 17th-century French philosopher-mathematician René Descartes concluded that the pineal gland was the “Seat of the Soul.” The ancients were aware, and associated the “Third Eye” with the autonomic nervous system, and with governing the pituitary gland, pineal gland, skull, eyes, brain, nervous system and the senses.
Known for centuries, and recorded in every ancient religious documents on the planet, from the beginning of time, and by all keepers of indigenous wisdom, mystics, esoteric psychologists, astrologists, numerologists, theosophical doctrines, occultism, Kabbalistic documents, Rosicrucian truths, The Roman Catholic Church, the ancient Greeks, and Egyptians, Hindu, Tibetans, and Buddhists understood the processes of the “The Third Eye.”
The interesting part of this post was where it spoke about the number 49. Being a Chinese, I have heard of 49 many times especially during wakes. How my relatives or friends would relate to how the ‘soul’ will take a rebirth after 49 days. But in Buddhism, Rinpoche taught that depending on our karma, we might not even go through the 49 days period. Those with heavy negative karma may go to ‘hell’ immediately after they take their last breath while some will take rebirth at a shorter bardo time. Scientifically, this post is intriguing! How beautiful the body works if we use it for the ‘right’ reasons.

It has been long known that the pineal gland is our connection to the mystical/other worldly experiences. Many native indigenous tribes had used herbal medicinal method to induce the hallucination or out of body experiences. It is interesting that Dr. Rick Strassman research into this phenomenon with drug induced DMT release for the test subjects to experience the NDE like effect. I wonder with the advances of science, would more people voluntarily put themselves under controlled environment to experience and be familiar with the dying process to prepare themselves for the eventual day. This definitely help lessen the fear of death. Of course this is based on the assumption that you don’t experience anything bad during the NDE episode.
I would prefer to have the drug free method by simply meditating and visualisation as taught by Buddha Shakyamuni and Buddhist Gurus. Many attained Masters had already proven through meditation the same effect can be achieved and I personally feel that the experiences will be more “real” and not chemically simulated.
There are still many things that science cannot explain yet or have the ability to measure, but just because of that, it does not mean it is not true. Interesting to note 49 is a magical number for many of the spiritual experiences one can experience.
This article seems to suggest that near death experiences such as visions of relatives, the white light and so on are attributed to the secretion of DMT. It implies that the extra-ordinary experiences are physiological and not an encounter of external beings.
This research opens up for debate with religious practices that state that experiences of seeing other beings when one is passing away is real.
To me, it’s not so important which one is true. What’s more important is to understand emptiness and develop compassion so that we can become enlightened.
