Question asked by Pema Thinley
Dear Pastors:
I have been reading Lamrim currently. But one thing I got stuck with is that I have been just reading and getting some understanding. I have not gone deeper. So how do I go about it if i have to properly read lah? can I go chapter wise or Topic wise? would you please help me with it?

Dear Pema Thinley,
The Lamrim as texts are not meant simply for intellectual understanding. In fact they are meditational manuals and guides for living. The texts are arranged in the correct sequence of practice and contemplation, therefore you read from beginning to end without skipping. What is most important is that with each chapter, you must first understand it intellectually, then contemplate its meaning and finally apply it in your life. For example there are passages in the Lam Rim that mention in graphic detail the suffering faced by those reborn in hell due to their karma. These passages are meant to inform you of what the sufferings is like so you have a strong desire not to go to the hell realms, and also to motivate you to engage in actions that ensure you do not go to hell. For example, not to kill any sentient beings, or be involved in trades that include killing. From there you do the opposite, which is you treasure life, and you start becoming a compassionate person.
This is just one example. There are many others. Rather than simply having an intellectual understanding however, the Lamrim is intended to be put into practice within your life. I hope this helps.
