Karma Kagyu’s Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche asks the Dalai Lama for Religious Freedom

Recently, one of my students drew my attention to a letter written by a Karma Kagyu Lama, His Eminence Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche. It was addressed to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the letter is honest, straight forward, eloquent, accusational, shocking and as if they have reached their wits end. It touches on a disturbing development affecting Tibetan Buddhism that compelled me to write and share Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s concerns because they are experiencing what I and many of us have experienced within the Gelugpa for holding on to our religious practice, there are so many parallels. Now, there are other Tibetan religious groups also experiencing religious discrimination. I am sorry to bring the Karma Kagyu’s controversies here, but it does show many similarities that can only be traced back to the Tibetan leadership’s method of governance.

His Eminence Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche (left) in deep conversation with His Holiness 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, no doubt updating him on his many activities and works for the Karma Kagyu lineage.

I do not personally know Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche and have not met him but I have been told by my friends that this lama has dedicated his life to the preservation of the Karma Kagyu lineage, including safeguarding important teachings by transforming them into the electronic format. I have also seen his humanitarian works online conducted in the name of the Karma Kagyu lineage. And quite clearly Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s peers hold Rinpoche in high regard; he previously held the post of General Secretary to His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje.

The Karma Kagyu lineage is one of the major schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Whilst the Gelugpas focus on intense study, debate, and the mastering of logic and reasoning, the Karma Kagyu is a lineage that prides itself for its direct oral transmissions and meditation techniques. The holy Karma Kagyu tradition traces its lineage back to the 11th century, and counts amongst its practitioners renowned mahasiddhas such as Maitipa, Marpa and the illustrious Milarepa.

The head of the Karma Kagyu is known as the Gyalwa Karmapa who is often called the Black Hat Lama and was the first recognised reincarnation lineage in Tibetan history. As with other reincarnation lineages, the Gyalwa Karmapa is found and recognised by his previous life’s students. They then transmit the entire body of knowledge and practices within their tradition back to the Karmapa, who in turn finds and recognises the reincarnations of his teachers and transmits his knowledge to them. This cycle is unbroken and ensures the continuity of the lineage of sacred teachings within the tradition.

His Holiness the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, previous head of the Karma Kagyu lineage.

One of the most attained lamas to have lived in recent times was His Holiness the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje who sadly entered clear light in 1981. It was a great loss to the lineage and for Buddha Dharma. The 16th Karmapa was known for his powerful clairvoyance and also his directness. In one well-documented incident for example, he clearly stated that in the future, Buddhist practitioners would need to rely on Dorje Shugden.

Since the 16th Karmapa’s passing there has been a series of events within the Karma Kagyu tradition which has resulted in division and much confusion. When the 16th Karmapa entered clear light, the search for his reincarnation attracted some controversy when Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche, one of the Regents of the Karma Kagyu, and Tai Situ Rinpoche (another high Lama within the tradition) each claimed to have found the Karmapa’s reincarnation. Since then His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan leadership have endorsed Orgyen Trinley Dorje, who is the candidate recognised by Tai Situ Rinpoche, whilst they do not endorse Trinley Thaye Dorje, the candidate recognised by Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche. Historically speaking the majority of the previous Gyalwa Karmapas have been recognised by Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche.

I am not qualified in any way to say which the ‘right’ Karmapa is, and this is not an issue I have involvement or knowledge of. I am writing about this controversy and the letter by Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to highlight the lack of religious freedom among the Tibetan people due to the persistent interference of their leadership in religious matters, even though they are supposed to be secular.

Left to right: His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin (throneholder of the Sakya lineage), His Holiness the Dalai Lama and His Holiness Orgyen Trinley Dorje. Orgyen Trinley Dorje is one of two Karmapa candidates, and frequently appears in photos with the Dalai Lama. This is a form of endorsement for his recognition. The Sakya Trizin meets both Karmapas while H.H. the Dalai Lama only is seen with one Karmapa candidate. By the Sakya Trizin being seen with the Karmapa candidate not chosen by Dalai Lama, isn't he saying Dalai Lama is wrong? Usually, when we don't follow the Dalai Lama's decision such as in the case of Dorje Shugden, we are considered against the Dalai Lama which will lead to negative backlash.

From a spiritual point of view, there is no limitation as to how many emanations an attained being such as His Holiness the 16th Karmapa can return as. To limit an enlightened being to just one emanation is limiting the power of the enlightened mind. And although they know this, the Tibetan leadership has ignored this fact and created a divide within a very ancient, powerful and sacred lineage by choosing to endorse one candidate over another.

As a so-called democracy, the Tibetan leadership which is supposed to be secular in nature, interfered in the spiritual affairs of the Karma Kagyu, resulting in divisions and disharmony. But instead of respecting the Karma Kagyu tradition, the Tibetan leadership got involved and supported the candidate recognised by Tai Situ Rinpoche which led to the Karma Kagyu having two different Karmapas. This has led to a split in the Karma Kagyu tradition that was otherwise united and harmonious for centuries.

His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje, the Karmapa candidate recognised by Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche as the reincarnation of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. Trinley Thaye Dorje is one of two Karmapa candidates, the other being Orgyen Trinley Dorje who was recognised by Tai Situ Rinpoche. The recognition of two candidates has led to a division and split in the Karma Kagyu tradition.

Why the split? Who do the Karma Kagyus follow, the candidate recognised by Shamar Rinpoche (as per their Karma Kagyu tradition), or the candidate endorsed by their people’s overall leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama? Whatever the case may be, what is fact is that the recognition of the 17th Karmapa had nothing to do with His Holiness the Dalai Lama (a Gelugpa lama) and the Tibetan leadership. It was a matter that should have been resolved within the Karma Kagyu tradition itself.

The split in the Karma Kagyu tradition, as a result of interference by the Tibetan leadership mirrors what has occurred in the Gelugpa tradition regarding the practice of Dorje Shugden. First, the Tibetan leadership created the Dorje Shugden controversy by announcing a ban against this Dharma Protector who has been relied on by centuries. Then, they aggravated the conflict by formalising and enforcing the ban on Dorje Shugden, thereby making discrimination against Shugden worshippers acceptable in Tibetan society. They created the problem AND consolidated it instead of doing something to try and resolve the dispute.

His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin (right), who is the head of the Sakya lineage with His Holiness 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje (left) during a meeting in America in 2002. Why would the Sakya Trizin meet this Karmapa candidate that Dalai Lama refuses to endorse, meet and acknowledge? The whole Karma Kagyu school of Buddhism is split in two because of this. Is the Sakya Trizin endorsing the candidate that the Dalai Lama did not endorse? Would the Sakya Trizin get in trouble for this? If he's not getting in trouble, why is he not in trouble? Why is it for other people who don't endorse the Dalai Lama's decisions, they get in trouble for example the Dorje Shugden people? Certainly, endorsing the wrong lama is much more dangerous than a 'wrong' protector because it's the lamas who do all the work.

It has been suggested that the Tibetan leadership enforced the Dorje Shugden ban to weaken Gelugpa influence in Tibetan politics. It is therefore no surprise that this interference in Karma Kagyu affairs by the Tibetan leadership has been seen as an attempt to seize power and control the Karma Kagyu for its own gain. If they endorse the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu lineage and their endorsement is accepted by the people, then they can control the practitioners of that lineage by controlling the spiritual head. Little did they anticipate that lamas like Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche and Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche would speak up strongly against this interference. What kind of democratic leadership divides and conquers its people like this?

Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter indicates that the Tibetan leadership’s attempt to interfere in Karma Kagyu affairs is not a one-off incident. Having divided the Karma Kagyu by endorsing one Karmapa candidate and not the other, they are now trying to limit the activities, popularity and credibility of His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje while promoting His Holiness Orgyen Trinley Dorje, who the Dalai Lama has endorsed.

Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche wrote about how the Dalai Lama’s supporters have tried all available means to disrupt events headed by His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. They want to stop His Holiness Thaye Dorje from teaching the Dharma and gaining supporters because if this was to happen, then their choice of Karmapa would no longer have control over the tradition, and the Tibetan leadership’s authority and power would wane.

His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin greeting His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. Usually when you endorse a lama, deity or practise Dalai Lama does not agree upon, you are seen as against the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama spoke against Dorje Shugden, but I continue to practise and hence I have become a hated individual within the Tibetan community just because I chose to continue to practise Dorje Shugden. I am not trying to turn this into a Gelug issue, but the reality is if you don't agree with the Dalai Lama, you do not have the religious freedom to practise in peace as you will be harassed, hated and attacked online as I have been.

In supporting only one Karmapa candidate His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan leadership are actively encouraging their supporters to hinder the activities of the other candidate His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. This tactic that is very damaging to the Karma Kagyu lineage, is not fair from a religious point of view as both the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan leadership are not even supposed to be involved in the Karmapa’s selection. It is not a Gelug affair (the tradition the Dalai Lama belongs to) and it is a religious matter (when the Tibetan leadership are supposed to be secular).

Their behaviour shows that they are interfering in religious affairs and going against the accepted ideal that is a hallmark of democratic governments – religious freedom. While the Tibetan leadership portray themselves as democratic, their actions do not match what they wish to portray. Even His Holiness who I respect greatly and has a world-wide reputation for peace, love and religious freedom, has through his actions of supporting one Karmapa, denied a whole section of his people the right to choose who leads their religious tradition. His Holiness with all due respect is the leader of all Tibetans and he should be fair to all his people, and not appear to favour one group over another or take sides.

Given the fact that Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche has written this letter to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, I can only foresee three logical outcomes:

1. The first is that Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche will be branded as anti-Dalai Lama and against the Tibetan leadership as he supports the ‘wrong’ Karmapa and moreover that he has dared to speak up for his religious freedom. Such an allegation can lead to violent repercussions against Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, which is very common in Tibetan society if you are branded anti-Dalai Lama and I hope will NOT happen.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama (left) with His Holiness Orgyen Trinley Dorje, one of two Karmapa candidates. In appearing in a photograph with Orgyen Trinley Dorje, the Dalai Lama is implicitly giving his endorsement of this candidate. The Dalai Lama has never appeared in a photograph with the other candidate, His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje

The Tibetan leadership has made very clear who they say the Karmapa is. Their candidate His Holiness Orgyen Trinley Dorje can be seen beside the Dalai Lama at many teachings, talks and in many photographs. If the Tibetan leadership were truly democratic, fair, and not biased, they would give the same opportunities to the other candidate His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. However, His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje has never appeared in a photograph with the Dalai Lama which in Tibetan society is a very powerful statement meaning the Dalai Lama endorses you. This is something understood and known by all Tibetans.

Again, I am NOT here to discuss which of the two Karmapas is real but my point is that the Tibetan leadership has used His Holiness the Dalai Lama to show who they ‘approve’ and who they do not ‘approve’. Using the Dalai Lama’s name to show what is good or bad is very common in Tibetan society. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche says in his letter that people have been misusing the Dalai Lama’s name to justify their wish to prevent His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje from teaching. In the Dorje Shugden issue, those who are against Dorje Shugden use the Dalai Lama’s name to justify their violent behaviour.

As I have said, the Tibetan leadership should be fair and democratic as they claim to be, and not choose sides or play favourites. And His Holiness, with all due respect and reverence, should even more so not appear to favour one group over another because he represents all Tibetan people and we all love and respect him very much. In fact in his position as the Dalai Lama, it makes even more sense that he could become a mediator to facilitate the healing of the Karma Kagyu lineage.

The letter as it appeared on His Eminence Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche's Facebook Fanpage. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is the general secretary of His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje, one of the two Karmapa candidates. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche wrote to the Dalai Lama to protest against how the Dalai Lama's supporters treated His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. Click to enlarge.

2. The second possible outcome of Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is that the Office of His Holiness and the Tibetan leadership will not respond and stay quiet. As this matter affects the Karma Kagyu tradition and not the Gelug tradition, they may not say anything in case they are accused of being sectarian. Even though they can remain quiet and pretend not to be interfering in the matters of another tradition, the fact is that they have interfered and continue to do so when they endorse one Karmapa candidate and not the other. Contrast this with the ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden, in which they seem to have free reign to actively persecute practitioners. In this case, they have never been accused of sectarianism since the practice relates to their own Gelug tradition which the Dalai Lama belongs to. Tai Situ Rinpoche now claims the letter is unable to be seen.

3. The third possible outcome is that they quietly contact Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche or his people and threaten him with some kind of repercussion if he continues to speak up or does not remove the letter. Non-Tibetans will find this difficult to believe but Tibetans can be very violent when called upon to do so. It is not uncommon or unheard of for people to be murdered for speaking against someone’s teacher or lama, or for speaking up against the leadership. Many lamas have been silenced in the past in this way as a result of their bravery to speak up against the leadership. Again this is very commonly known in Tibetan society.

In 2014, Gen Chonzey, an 84 year old monk of Trijang Rinpoche's Ladrang (house), was brutally attacked by masked intruders for serving His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Chocktrul Rinpoche. His refusal to give up his Dorje Shugden practice and loyalty to Trijang Rinpoche was tantamount to him going against the Tibetan leadership so therefore he was attacked. Luckily he survived.

Through Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter, we can see that religious freedom does not exist within Tibetan society, since the Tibetan leadership likes to keep matters under their control and will use any means to do so. Sections of the Karma Kagyu do not have religious freedom to think and decide who the Karmapa is, but is being told what to do or think by the Tibetan leadership. In the letter, His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje is even branded as a Dorje Shugden practitioner, as though it would be some kind of a slur. In fact, Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche even refers to the BAN on Dorje Shugden which is totally contrary to what the Dalai Lama says about giving up the practice (that it is just advice). For a Tibetan, who is not from the Gelugpa lineage, to refer to the controversy surrounding the practice of Dorje Shugden as a ‘ban’ clearly shows that one exists, despite the denial of the Tibetan leadership. This actually highlights another matter that shows the lack of religious freedom within Tibetan society, and that is the active ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden. Despite being a legitimate Gelugpa practice, through the machinations of the Tibetan leadership it has now even become a way to put someone down and degrade them.

His Holiness Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje wearing the traditional hat of a lama travelling

The Tibetan leadership often accuses China of suppressing religious freedom and human rights. They use this to differentiate themselves from China, in order to further their cause to regain Tibet. But clearly they are using the very same tactics they accuse China of, to control their own Tibetan people. Over the last 60 years since the Tibetans left Tibet, the leadership has driven a wedge into every sector of their society in order to keep control. This letter highlights the fact that they have done so with the Karma Kagyu tradition, and the ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden has shown that they have done this in the Gelugpa tradition.

The deep frustration felt by the Tibetan people who lack religious freedom to practise how and what they want, is beginning to surface with more and more people speaking up against the behaviour of the Tibetan leadership. This is clearly the case with Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, who questions His Holiness the Dalai Lama clearly and bravely regarding to the Tibetan leadership’s treatment of His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. While I do not enjoy or rejoice when anyone disagrees with His Holiness in this manner, it is the result of 60 years of the Tibetan leadership exploiting their people in all sectors of society, that people now hold His Holiness responsible for issues in Tibetan society such as lack of religious freedom.

I respect Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche greatly for speaking up for his religious freedom and his tradition, despite being aware of the backlash he may receive by criticising the Tibetan leadership in such a public manner. Like Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, I know the ramifications of speaking up for religious freedom, as I speak up against the ban on Dorje Shugden’s holy practice. This has led to a lot of pain, attacks and abuse directed towards me. I have lost family, teachers, students and friends due to my speaking up against the Dorje Shugden ban. This risk of and actual backlash against those who are simply practising what they have been for centuries is more than enough evidence that there is no religious freedom or true democracy within Tibetan society.

Dorje Shugden and the Karmapa are such different issues belonging to different sects, and involving completely different groups of people. And yet both these groups suffer the same fate. Can you see that this is NOT about the Karmapa issue or the Dorje Shugden issue? Can you see that it is about the Tibetan leadership, where all disharmony and problems in the Tibetan community have originated from the same source which is the Tibetan leadership? I am sorry to talk about this and I do not mean to highlight the difficulties being faced by the Karma Kagyu lineage at this moment. But it must be shown that the source of the division, disharmony and split in the Karma Kagyu school originates from the same source as the divisions caused by the Dorje Shugden ban, which is the Tibetan leadership.

Personally, if it weren’t for the political undercurrents, I do not see any harm in having two Karmapas. Why not? If there can be two great bodhisattvas and masters who are working to bring people to the Dharma, and working for the growth of bodhicitta and the preservation of Buddha’s tradition, all the better for those who have a karmic affinity with the Buddha Dharma via the Karma Kagyu lineage.

I pray for the flourishing and growth of all authentic traditions of the Buddha Dharma such as the Karma Kagyu lineage. I wish His Holiness the Dalai Lama no ill will and no disrespect in my examination of Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter, and pray for his long life and good health. I hope that His Holiness will resolve the matter of religious freedom soon, for Karma Kagyu followers and for Dorje Shugden practitioners, all of whom are Tibetans and deserve His Holiness’ love and blessings.

I also send Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche my sympathies for the suffering that the Karma Kagyu’s have received in trying to stand up for religious freedom. I wanted to tell Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche that it will be a long and difficult road, but if we don’t stand up and say something, it will never end. I have been hated, threatened, demonized, accused of everything and anything, alienated from my Tibetan society, am attacked daily online and Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche might be prepared for the same. But I do salute his courage and tenacity. I do hope His Holiness the Dalai Lama will solve the Karma Kagyu’s problems as he can solve it. I hope His Holiness will lift the unethical ban against Dorje Shugden practitioners also. With deep respects to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and my prayers to Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche.

ADDENDUM: This article previously stated that Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is currently the General Secretary to His Holiness Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche has since kindly clarified that he held this position many years ago and has since taken up other duties. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is currently active in Asia (especially Nepal and Singapore), travelling regularly to teach in Karma Kagyu Centres. The current General Secretary of the Kagyu lineage is Venerable Lama Jigme Rinpoche.

A summary of the issue of the two Karmapas and how it has divided Karma Kagyu practitioners. Click to enlarge.

In the history of the previous 16 Karmapas, they have all been recognised and enthroned by those within the Karma Kagyu tradition and not by any other. The Karma Kagyu need no assistance in this process from another tradition, and other traditions have no authority to recognise the Karmapa.

In 1981, after His Holiness the 16th Karmapa entered clear light, the Four Regents of the Karma Kagyu tradition (namely Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Tai Situ Rinpoche and Gyaltsab Rinpoche) formed a council. This council was formed to take joint responsibility until the next Karmapa would be able to lead the lineage. It was agreed that each Regent would lead the lineage, alternating every three years. Due to a lot of debate and issues that the council could not agree on, this council was later dissolved. They had existed for just three years after the 16th Karmapa’s death.

Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche Tai Situ Rinpoche
In the Karma Kagyu tradition Shamar Rinpoche is the most senior lama after the Karmapa. Between the 1790s and 1963 when Shamar Rinpoche’s reincarnations were officially banned, Tai Situ Rinpoche recognised and enthroned the Karmapa candidate. Therefore the current Tai Situ Rinpoche uses this historical reference to legitimise his recognition of Orgyen Trinley Dorje as the 17th Karmapa.
Although the line of Shamar Rinpoches was banned from being recognised until 1963, after 1963 he regained his full authority to be first in the line to recognise the Karmapa. Unless the Shamar Rinpoche is indisposed, unavailable or between incarnations, Tai Situ Rinpoche does not have the authority to recognise the Karmapa.
The 16th Karmapa believed very much in the Shamar line of incarnations and that they were faultless. Therefore he even made extensive offerings to His Holiness the 14th Dalai lama and requested that the line of Shamar Rinpoches be reinstated. As Tai Situ Rinpoche had no authority to recognise the Karmapa, as Shamar Rinpoche was alive and well-able, he sought the backing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan leadership.
In the interim period (1790s – 1963), although officially banned, the Shamar line of incarnations kept returning, and they were secretly found and enthroned by the various Karmapas. The Dalai Lama, having no authority to do so, sided with Tai Situ Rinpoche’s choice of Karmapa candidate. This created an emotional and heavily charged division within the Karma Kagyu tradition. This huge split, which is very controversial, has not been resolved till now.
What is curious is that it is said that the Dalai Lamas have no power over other lineages beyond the Gelugs, but obviously they have full power and authority over all lineages, to the consternation of the various non-Gelug lineage heads. In fact the Gaden Tripas have been the official head of the Gelugpa tradition for over 600 years but their powers are curtailed or overshadowed by the Office of the Dalai Lama. All decisions with the Gelugpa, to the casual and distant observer would seem like a democratic process. In retaliation of Shamar Rinpoche’s decision to recognise his own candidate, Tai Situ Rinpoche’s supporters violently attacked Rumtek Monastery, during the enthronement of Trinley Thaye Dorje (click here or scroll down to see a video of the attack).
In reality however, all the power is vested in the hands of the Dalai Lama. The ban against Dorje Shugden was declared in 1996 and suddenly after 400 years of practice, Dorje Shugden was branded as ‘bad’. Dorje Shugden, having been banned by the highest authority in the Tibetan lands, would make everyone have to naturally agree to this ‘democratically.’ This unique system of ‘democracy’ within Tibetan governance today would most likely make the founding fathers of democracy turn in their graves. In fact it has been remarked that the governance of Tibet is one of a Marxist dictatorship. Following this, Shamar Rinpoche used his connections to have Tai Situ Rinpoche banned from India between August 2, 1994 and August 25, 1998 (click here to read about Tai Situ Rinpoche’s happiness upon returning to India).
Shamar Rinpoche is also the most senior of the Four Regents of the Karma Kagyu. The Four Regents are below the position of Karmapa. To this day both Karmapa candidates are not allowed in or to occupy Rumtek Monastery, which is currently under the protection of the Indian government.
In many of the Karmapa’s previous lives, his unmistaken reincarnations were recognised and enthroned by Shamar Rinpoche. The Karmapa himself also recognised and enthroned the Shamar Rinpoche and the other regents. Rumtek Monastery contains a lot of wealth including very precious antique statues, thangkas and other items given to the previous Karmapa. This stands to be inherited by one of the Karmapas.
Under the orders of the Tibetan leadership, the line of Shamar Rinpoche’s reincarnations were banned between the 1790s until 1963 for political reasons. The Karmapas still continued to recognise the reincarnations of Shamar Rinpoche during this period, but in secret. Supporters of Orgyen Trinley Dorje have tried to block Trinley Thaye Dorje from teaching the Dharma on a number of occasions, including in Taiwan and Ladakh (click here to read Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter).
The seat of the Karmapa in exile is Rumtek Monastery, India. When Shamar Rinpoche’s candidate of Trinley Thaye Dorje was being enthroned, Tai Situ Rinpoche’s supports were violently breaking the windows and throwing stones at the monastery. The Indian police were called to end the fighting (see video below). A Chinese tourist in Bodhgaya threw a hardcover book at Orgyen Trinley Dorje, who managed to duck out of the way (click here to read the news article).
Shamar Rinpoche accuses Tai Situ Rinpoche of creating a fake letter, which was used to locate and identify Tai Situ Rinpoche’s candidate Orgyen Trinley Dorje. This letter has never been seen since Orgyen Trinley Dorje was endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan leadership. Tai Situ Rinpoche thought that if he had the Dalai Lama’s backing for his choice of candidate, then Shamar Rinpoche’s candidate would fade way. But this has not happened. In fact Shamar Rinpoche’s candidate has gained a lot of popularity.
Ugyen Tobgay mirrors Shamar Rinpoche’s claim by stating that the letter from Tai Situ Rinpoche was indeed fake (click here or scroll down to see video and transcript).

(17:50 – 19:50) The biggest mistake these four made, was they excluded all the old class and they never let them join the meeting. They said, we, the four, will decide. Four of them. They decided that they are the only sole decider of this. That according to him (Ugyen Tobgay) is the first mistake they made. They had meetings again and again. They bickered with each other, they hit each other, they used derogatory terms to each other, and then nobody knew what was happening as they kept it a secret. Outside they all portrayed that everything was alright. They deceived everyone. Then Situ Rinpoche showed the letter but Shamar Rinpoche didn’t accept it. Without even looking at it, Shamar Rinpoche didn’t accept it. Then there was a big problem. Then the problem was publicized.

(26:00 – 27:00) In fact if you read the letter. Two books have proven that this letter was forged. They want to check the letter but they don’t know authentic handwriting or not. Situ Rinpoche is a thief. Now when you ask where is the original? They said it is already put inside the statue and it is gone.

(27:11 – 27:40) They searched every corner of Rumtek Monastery and they never found. Two times. When they decided to say “There is no letter”, they said “No you can’t say that”. So they gave a lot of different excuses.

Parallels between the Dorje Shugden and Karmapa issues

Democracy does not exist within Tibetan society and those who oppose the Tibetan leadership are subjected to persecution. Rather than an issue regarding the Karmapa or the practice of Dorje Shugden, the real issue surrounds the democratic right of the freedom to practise their own religion without political interference. Those who go against the Tibetan leadership, whatever the issue, are subjected to measures taken against them as listed below.

No. Dorje Shugden Issues Karmapa Issues
1 Dorje Shugden’s spiritual practice that spans centuries and was suddenly declared illegitimate. The inclusion of Trinley Thaye Dorje within the spiritual incarnation lineage of the Karmapas, that spans centuries, was suddenly declared illegitimate.
2 Sangha and other practitioners were declared ‘bad’ due to their practice of Dorje Shugden. High lamas and followers of Thaye Dorje were declared ‘bad’ due to their spiritual allegiance.
3 The Gelug lineage was divided due to the ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden. The Karma Kagyu tradition was divided due to the Tibetan leadership’s endorsement of the rival Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley.
4 Use of violence against Dorje Shugden practitioners has been allegedly incited by the Tibetan leadership (e.g. the attack on Gen Chonze as shown above). Use of violence against Karmapa Thaye Dorje and the storming of Rumtek Monastery was incited by those who support the Tibetan leadership’s choice of Karmapa.
5 Dorje Shugden practitioners are denied their spiritual home – Gaden, Sera and Drepung monasteries. Followers on the both sides of the Karma Kagyu divide, are denied the traditional Karmapa seat at Rumtek Monastery.
6 His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in the position to stop the persecution and discrimination but has not done so despite many calls to do so. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in the position to stop the persecution and discrimination against Karmapa Thaye Dorje but has not done so, despite many calls to do so.
7 The Tibetan leadership did not have the authority to impose the ban on Dorje Shugden. The Tibetan leadership did not have the authority to interfere with the affairs of the Karma Kagyus.
8 The Tibetan leadership flouted its own ‘democratic’ constitution by imposing the Dorje Shugden ban, denying Dorje Shugden practitioners of their religious freedom. Tibetan leadership flouted its own ‘democratic’ principles by denying the Karma Kagyus their right to self-determination – the right to choose their own spiritual head.
9 What started as a Tibetan situation exported schism and hatred globally. What was an internal matter of a Tibetan Buddhist tradition is being played out globally (see the examples of Taiwan and Ladakh, India in Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter).
10 Confidence in the Gelug lineage has been undermined due to the confusion that was arisen from the ban on Dorje Shugden. This gives Tibetan Buddhism a bad name. Confidence in the Karma Kagyu lineage has been undermined due to the rivalry between supports of the two Karmapas. This gives Tibetan Buddhism a bad name.
11 Dorje Shugden practitioners are bullied, called names, degraded and segregated simply because they continue their practice. It is said that there is religious freedom however every tactic is employed to stop you from your exercising your religious freedom, which makes Tibetan Buddhism seem like a scam. Karma Kagyu practitioners who do not support the Dalai Lama’s choice of Karmapa are bullied, shamed, segregated and embarrassed by the ‘democratic’ Tibetan government who labels themselves a democracy yet their tactics betray them as dictatorial.

Karmapa Thaye Dorje, Chogye Trichen Rinpoche and Shamar Rinpoche. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche is the master of masters within the Sakya tradition. He has even given teachings to the current Sakya Trizin. Here he is seated with Thaye Dorje which would mean he accepts him as the incarnation of the Karmapa. In fact it was Chogye Trichen who had a dream of the 16th Karmapa circumambulating a stupa, after which he was given news of a child in Tibet claiming to be the Karmapa. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche conveyed this news to Shamar Rinpoche, which eventually led to the location and recognition of Karmapa Thaye Dorje.

Chogye Trichen Rinpoche is seated here with Karmapa Orgyen Trinley, Sakya Trizin and Dalai Lama. After the Karma Kagyu school of Buddhism broke in half because it cannot be decided who the Karmapa is, it is interesting to see a teacher of Chogye Trichen Rinpoche's calibre being seen with both Karmapa candidates. Does this mean he accepts both or was politically forced to accept Karmapa Orgyen Trinley since he is the Dalai Lama's choice? Since Chogye Trichen Rinpoche also takes photos with Karmapa Thaye Dorje, wouldn't that upset the Tibetan leadership or Dalai Lama, because it is saying he supports the candidate the Dalai Lama does not support?

The young incarnation of Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche is shown here meeting with Karmapa Thaye Dorje. Again would this young incarnation be in trouble for meeting the Karmapa candidate that is not supported by Dalai Lama or chosen by Tai Situ Rinpoche? What is the young Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche conveying here?

Here the young Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche's incarnation is meeting with Karmapa Orgyen Trinley. Why would he meet both candidates? The Karma Kagyu school of Buddhism does not accept both candidates of the Karmapa, so by meeting either one, does it increase the tension?

A well known Nyingmapa Lama Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche meets with Karmapa Thaye Dorje, who was not chosen by Dalai Lama. What is Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche sharing with everyone here? Is he saying both candidates are the actual Karmapas? If so, the Karma Kagyu school of Buddhism does not accept this.

Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche here with the Dalai Lama's candidate of Karmapa Orgyen Trinley. It is all so very confusing.

Left to right: Sakya Trizin's sister Jetsunma, Luding Khen Rinpoche, Karmapa Thaye Dorje, Sakya Trizin and Sakya Trizin's son. Here is a formal picture of both Sakya Trizin and Luding Khen Rinpoche acknowledging that Karmapa Thaye Dorje is the right candidate. If he was an imposter, why take a picture such as this to show the public? How does the Tibetan leadership feel about Sakya Trizin and Luding Khen Rinpoche endorsing the Karmapa not chosen by Dalai Lama and Tai Situpa Rinpoche?

Sakya Trizin and Luding Khen Rinpoche together with Karmapa Orgyen Trinley. This is the Karmapa chosen by Tai Situ Rinpoche and endorsed by the Dalai Lama. Why are these lamas meeting up with both Karmapa candidates? Does this hurt the sentiments of the divided Karma Kagyu School of Buddhism? What message are they sending by doing this?

Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche Lodro Chokyi Nyima with His Holiness Dalai Lama and Karmapa Orgyen Trinley. The division within the Karma Kagyu tradition goes even deeper than just the recognition of two Karmapas, this even affects the line of Jamgon Kongtrul's incarnations, of which there are also two candidates. Here we see Jamgon Kongtrul Chokyi Nyima, the candidate recognised by Karmapa Orgyen Trinley and endorsed by the Dalai Lama.

Another Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Karma Migyur Drakpa Senge, with Karmapa Thaye Dorje and Beru Khyentse Rinpoche. Jamgon Kongtrul is one of the Four Regents of Kagyu School of Buddhism, as such it is the Karmapa who has the authority to recognise the incarnation. Here we see the incarnation as recognised by Karmapa Thaye Dorje. Strangely this candidate was also recognised by the Dalai Lama, who performed a hair-cutting ceremony for him.

Lama Ole Nydahl is a student of the previous 16th Karmapa. With the instructions of the previous Karmapa he went on to open 659 centres in the name of the Karmapa around the world. He has been actively teaching Buddhism for the last 40 years. Lama Ole Nydahl has thousands of students and is a great devotee of the Karmapa. Lama Ole Nyadhl has chosen Karmapa Thaye Dorje as the genuine Karmapa and supported Shamar Rinpoche. Lama Ole Nyadhl does not support the Dalai Lama's choice of Karmapa. Lama Ole Nyadhl does not attend teachings by His Holiness the Dalai Lama either. His support of the Karmapa Thaye Dorje has swayed the members of his 659 centres to back this candidate.

The head of the Drikung Kagyu School of Buddhism, His Holiness Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche meeting Karmapa Thaye Dorje. Is this also a message to the Dalai Lama that he endorses this candidate?

Despite contemporary misconceptions about the pairing of Guru Rinpoche and Dorje Shugden, a number of important antique thangkas depicting both deities on the same painting do exist. Unfortunately, Guru Rinpoche’s wrathful manifestation of Dorje Drolo in recent times is often mistakenly depicted stepping upon a monk-like figure wearing a round hat representing Dorje Shugden, thus reinforcing the wrong notion that Dorje Shugden is a spirit. However, this does not alter the facts of older antique thangkas that showcase Dorje Shugden as an authentic enlightened Dharma protector.

There are allegations that Dorje Shugden is a Gelug Dharma Protector and that he will not protect those who worship Guru Rinpoche or those of other traditions. This is not true as Dorje Shugden is an enlightened being and therefore, he will protect all beings regardless of whether they worship Guru Rinpoche or not.

Dorje Shugden arose specifically to protect Lama Tsongkhapa’s uncommon view of emptiness, which is the Buddha’s highest teachings on wisdom. However, he is a an enlightened being and he can still be relied on by practitioners of any other lineages or traditions. There is no limit or restrictions to an enlightened being’s compassion and skillful means to benefit sentient beings.

In Tibetan Buddhism, Vajravarahi or Dorje Phagmo in Tibetan is a wrathful form of Vajrayogini, who in turn is associated with the Chakrasamvara Tantra. In terms of iconography, she is the female counterpart of Heruka Chakrasaṃvara and is widely practised in many Tibetan Buddhist traditions but principally relied on within the Kagyu tradition. According to the Kagyu lineage, Buddha Shakyamuni is believed to have arisen as Buddha Vajradhara in order to teach the Tantras. Furthermore, the first Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa (1110 – 1193 CE) is said to have achieved great spiritual attainments through her practice. On the other hand, Mahakala Bernagchen is the principle protector of the Karmapa line of incarnations.

Kalachakra (central figure)

Buddha Shakyamuni (top left), Dorje Shug (bottom left), Dorje Shugden (bottom middle), White Tara (bottom right)

Kalachakra means Wheel of Time or “time-cycles” and is also a Tantric deity or yidam of Vajrayana Buddhism. The name also represents complex meditation practices contained within the Kalachakra Tantra literature. The meditations contained in this tantric system has the great ability to bring one to complete enlightenment. According to the Kalachakra Tantra, Buddha Shakyamuni taught the Kalachakra Root Tantra in Dharanikota (near modern-day Amaravathi) in south-eastern India to the first king of Shambhala.

Furthermore, Dorje Shugden for many lifetimes as great translators and lineage holders had been responsible for the dissemination and preservation of the Kalachakra Tantra in Tibet. According to the long fulfilment puja (kangsol) text, Dorje Shugden at the beginning of the puja is called forth from the mystical land of Shambhala, the last great stronghold of the Kalachakra lineage and practice on earth.

The Karmapa heads the 900 years old Karma Kagyu sect, popularly called the Black Hat sect of the Tibetan Buddhism. The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu lineage, a Buddhist school in Tibet. The Karma Kagyu lineage is the most influential of the Tibetan Buddhist lineages outside Tibet studied and practiced all around the world. The teachings of the Kagyu lineage have been passed down for nearly a thousand years within Tibet. As one of Tibetan Buddhism’s four main lineages, the Kagyu School is especially known for its profound meditative practices, its tradition of strict retreat, and the countless awakened individuals it has produced. The teachings of the Kagyu lineage stretch back to ancient India, having a long history behind it.
H E Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, a Karma Kagyu Lama, recently sent an open letter to HH Dalai Lama on behalf of the thousands or millions of Kagyu practitioners. This letter mentioned various points of aggressive pressure and assaults, threatening, and discrimination attributed to supporters of H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama. Finally one courage Lama speaking up how practitioners have been suffering all these while. He is the only high-ranking Tibetan Lama formally recognised both by Dalai Lama and the Chinese.
Well it seem that other Tibetan religious groups also experiencing religious discrimination ,having many similarities to the Gelup lineage. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche has dedicated his life to the preservation of the Karma Kagyu lineage. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche highlighted the lack of religious freedom among the Tibetan people due to the persistent interference of their Tibetan leadership. Due to the Tibetan leadership the Karma Kagyu split so as in the Gelup lineage sufferings to the practitioners. In time to come hopefully it will resolve the disputes for the sake of Dharma.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting sharing.

That’s great Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche sending an open letter to HH Dalai Lama on behalf of the thousands or millions of Kagyu practitioners. Interesting note is that the letter addresses various points of aggressive pressure and assaults, threatening, and discrimination attributed to supporters of H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama.
The Karmapa lineage is the most ancient tulku lineage in Tibetan Buddhism. The Karmapa controversy had some similarities to the problems faced by Dorje Shugden practitioners today. Many has suffered for the last decades due the Dorje Shugden same goes to Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje’s supportors that has caused disharmony, discrimination and so forth . Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche had appeals to the Dalai Lama’s moral responsibility as the spiritual leader of the Tibetan people to intervene and control his followers. Democracy does not exist within Tibetan society at all and those who oppose the Tibetan leadership are subjected to persecution. May both the Dorje Shugden and Karmapa controversy ends in harmony for the benefits of all practitioners.
Thank you Rinpoche for highlighting the lack of religious freedom among the Tibetan people .

It really shows how destructive politics can play in religion where separation is bound to happen and often with much sufferings on both sides, as well as, creating tremendous negative karma. Politics had not only affected the Gelugs directly but also the Karma Kagyu but with the latest news, I am very glad that both Karmapas met and overcame the political discord sowed by the Tibetan Leaders. I do pray that the Gelugpas are able to do the same and realise how we practice harmony indicates the level of spirituality we achieve.

Mantras are sacred verbalized words that invoke the protection and blessings of the deity to whom the mantra is ascribed. Mantras are also the manifestations of Buddhas in the form of ‘sounds’, hence the various mantras of Dorje Shugden contain the essence of the Protector.

It is so refreshing that people from other traditions spoke up and touched although briefly on the Dorje Shugden issue. The Dorje Shugden ban is real and still alive around the world, it is not something that we dreamed of. For the people who denied the existence of the ban, they are either in denial or they are purposely trying to mislead their audience.

  6. Chris on Nov 26, 2018 at 10:55 am

Thank you, Rinpoche and the blog team to share with us this uplifting letter from Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche. The Dorje Shugden ban had created a lot of suffering and tension within the once peaceful and happy Buddhist community. Because of the ban, the Tibetan Buddhist community both lay and ordained are separated.

The unity is gone because there is a ban on one of the popular and powerful protectors Dorje Shugden. Those who chose to continue to practice Dorje Shugden will be segregated and discriminated in the Tibetan community. They are even called as traitors or Chinese dogs just because what they believe in what is against His Holiness the Dalai Lama had said.

When we see another high lama is standing up against discrimination and segregation to fight for religious freedom for everyone, it is very inspiring and uplifting. Thank you Rinpoche for upholding Dorje Shugden’s practice and most importantly religious freedom.

    Dear friends,

Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.

You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.

Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.

May you be safe, protected and blessed.

“The 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche of Bhutan and Dorje Shugden” blog post which was published June 8, 2018 already has exactly at the moment 152,744 views!! Over 150k views!!! Amazing!! The views will keep growing as time elapses of course.

This indicates many Bhutanse and Buddhists around the world will now know that Dorje Shugden is connected to Bhutan and their Kagyu Lineage. Dorje Shugden was promoted by the highest lama of Bhutan namely the 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche himself. So Dorje Shugden will help and protect anyone and is not sectarian as they accuse him to be. People in the Kagyu school of Buddhism also practised Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden assisted them lovingly. Dorje Shugden being an emanation of Manjushri will help anyone who calls upon him regardless of their background and religion.

Good job to our writers, researchers, editors, technical team, supporting team and Kechara people who promoted this blog post on social media. Now more will come to understand how pervasive Dorje Shugden is in all the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism although the Tibetan leadership in-exile tries to hide this truth. Thank you everyone for promoting Dorje Shugden to benefit many. We were all very harmonious before the unethical ban against Dorje Shugden practitioners. Since the inception of the ban in 1996, there has been no benefits and instead so much disharmony among Tibetan Buddhists around the world. Many hundreds have spoken up about this point where we want harmony back. There should never be a ban against any spiritual practice.

His Eminence Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche’s incarnation is in Lhasa visiting. He is visiting the 350-year-old Trode Khangsar chapel dedicated to Dorje Shugden. He is paying homage to the powerful statue of Dorje Shugden housed in this sacred chapel. Both the chapel and statue of Dorje Shugden were commissioned by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama. The Great 5th Dalai Lama also composed a prayer to be recited daily to Dorje Shugden.

Dagom Rinpoche’s previous lives were great masters, scholars and practitioners of Dorje Shugden. Now this new incarnation of Dagom Rinpoche is offering gold on the face of Dorje Shugden in homage and worship to this very sacred statue of Dorje Shugden housed in Lhasa for the last 350 years. This is a very traditional Tibetan method of paying homage to holy images, which is by offering gold with prayers.

The Tibetan leadership wrongly says if you practise Dorje Shugden you will take rebirth into the three lower realms. Hundreds of lamas from the Sakya, Kagyu and Gelugpa schools of Buddhism have practised Dorje Shugden and their incarnations returned. Many of the incarnations are recognised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. So this shows if you practise Dorje Shugden, only benefits come and no harm will come. The very fact Dagom Rinpoche’s incarnation is back, is clear evidence that Dorje Shugden’s practice is beneficial.

May Dagom Rinpoche’s current incarnation live a very long life.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden

This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.

The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is in Dharamsala, which is broken into two parts. Upper Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama’s palace is located with his audience room and main prayer hall. It is also the location of the Dialectics School, Gaden Shartse’s guesthouse, restaurants, tourist hotels and main tourist areas.

A short ride down takes you to the lower part of Dharamsala where the Tibetan government is located. It is the location of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Nechung monastery, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan arts centre…it’s all in one area. And the reason why it’s split into upper and lower Dharamsala is because the area is mountainous.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives was established by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government to preserve all the ancient texts – both secular and spiritual – of Tibet and in the process, translate them into various languages like English. This book, Overview of Buddhist Tantra, by Panchen Sonam Drakpa was one of the books translated into English. What’s very interesting is that the book very clearly says that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, one of the five main disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa. It also says that after that, he was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

So the book is basically saying that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen – the three Drakpas – are of the same mindstream.

Now that’s very peculiar because if Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous life is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, the renowned composer of 45 volumes of Dharma texts, the abbot of three monasteries AND the 15th Gaden Tripa, the holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne…if that’s the case, how can Panchen Sonam Drakpa take rebirth as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and become an evil spirit and have a negative mind?

Prior to Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, he was Panchen Sonam Drakpa and before that, he was Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. How can a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa reincarnate as the erudite master Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and then die and reincarnate as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen…and then Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, due to a bad and negative prayer, become the evil spirit Dorje Shugden? How is that possible? Logically, it’s not.

What’s incredible is that all of this was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives under the Dalai Lama’s guidance. They contradict themselves because on one hand, the Tibetan leaders say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit. On the other hand they’re printing a book saying that Panchen Sonam Drakpa, whose later incarnation became Dorje Shugden, is of this illustrious mindstream.

So how can the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, which is under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, print the translation of a book composed by the previous incarnation of a so-called evil spirit? How can they then say in the book that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and his next life was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?

Prior to the Dorje Shugden ban and controversy, everyone in Tibet knew that Dorje Shugden is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and that Panchen Sonam Drakpa is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. The three Drakpas, they are one mindstream emanating again and again to benefit other beings.

And as we all know, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen became Dorje Shugden so it totally doesn’t make sense to call him an evil spirit, then highlight all of his previous lives as erudite masters, and publish all of this information under their own library. So you can see the contradictions. You can read all of this for yourself in Overview of Buddhist Tantra, which was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.

    OVERVIEW OF BUDDHIST TANTRA

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CLASSES OF TANTRA,
CAPTIVATING THE MINDS OF THE FORTUNATE ONES

    BY
    PANCHEN SONAM DRAGPA
    (Pan-chen bSod-nams grags-pa, 1478-1554)

    O Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel! (Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal!)
In the vast expanse of Your bodhi-mind,
The mind that the Buddhas have lauded for as many as
    one hundred times,
You have developed “merit” shining like the sun.
Through Your skill in learning, debate and writing,
As illuminating as one hundred thousand sun rays,
You have developed in You a complete knowledge of
    the entire sutras and tantras,
Resembling a garden of flowers in full bloom.
    The power of Your speech is like the sun;
The fame of your name has reached the three realms of
    this world.
O Sonam Dragpa, the teacher of teachers!
I bow down at your feet.

In the vast garden of Your great teachings,
The intelligent young people gather for
The ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission,’
Just as they are attracted to
The one hundred thousand types of nectar
Dripping from a flower of one hundred petals.
May I be able to experience
The taste of the secret tantra!

Panchen Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the holder of sutra and Vajrayana teachings, was a master whose outstanding learning and spiritual accomplishments are well known by all the learned ones in Tibet. His first incarnation came in the form of one of the five prestigious disciples of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) and became known as Vinaya Holder (Dulzin) Dragpa Gyaltsen (Gragspa rgyal-mtshan). Then came Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the author of the present text. The next was Nagri Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen (mNga’-ris sPrul-sku Grags-pa rgyal-mtshan). In this way, a line of his incarnations, each with the Dragpa (gragspa) surname, followed successively.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was born in the 14th century in Tsetang (rTsed-thang) in the Lhoka (Lho-kha) region of Central Tibet. He entered the great seat of learning, Sera Thekchenling (Se-ra theg-chen-gling) monastic university, where he became the personal disciple of spiritual master Donyo Dangden (Dhon-yod dang-ldan) and His Holiness the Second Dalai Lama Gedun Gyatso (dGe-‘dun rgya-mtsho). Under them, he studied the entire teachings of sutra, tantra and their commentaries, and became known for his outstanding learning. He also received from them the empowerments, reading transmissions, guides and instructions of the entire body of spiritual training. On becoming the fully blessed one, the Dalai Lama appointed him the abbot of the Loseling (Blo-gsalgling) college, one of the four colleges of Drepung (‘Bras-dpung)- the most prestigious monastic university in Tibet before 1959, with over 10,000 monks on its register. He continued to be the abbot of this college for the next six years; and after him the tenure for each of his successors in this position was fixed for a period of six years, a rule that is followed even today.

He was then appointed the head of the Gelugpa (dGe-lugs-pa) order, the throne holder of Gaden (dGa’-ldan), thus becoming the 15th regent of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-khapa), the second Buddha. In his eulogy to him, Khedrub Gelek Pelsang (mKhas-grub dGe-legs dpal- bzang) says:

O Lama, the second successor of the Unsubduable One,
The regent of the Lord of Dharma,
    You are the one who made the virtuous qualities thrive;
You are the one who ascended to the golden throne uplifted
    by the fearless lions.
    May Your success thrive forever!

He continued to be the throne holder for the next seven years, during which time he promoted the spread of Lord Tsongkhapa’s (Tsong-kha-pa) precious teachings, the Gelug (dGe-lugs) tradition, across the land in all directions. He also paid special attention to the practice of monastic rules and the learning and meditation of Buddhism in the monasteries such as Sera (Se-ra), Drepung (‘Bras-spungs), Kyomolung (sKyo-mo-lung), Phagmo Chode (Phag-mo chos-sde), Nyeding (Nye-sdings), Ödna (’Od-sna) and Chöde Rinchen (Chos-sde rin-chen) etc. and improved them to a great extent. He taught the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (bSod-nams rGya-mtsho) as the latter’s spiritual master. It was from him that the Dalai Lama received the name Sonam (bSod-nams).

His contributions in the literary field are enormous; and, indeed, they are the most valuable of all his contributions. Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) has rightly said:

    Of all one’s deeds,
The ‘deeds of speech’ are the most valuable.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was a person with an extraordinary talent for teaching, debate and writing. In his colophon to Bu mey chi don zab don sel wey dron mey (dBu ma’i spyi don zab don gsal ba’i sgron me), he wrote:

In the field of teaching, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would outdo them in this field, Arya Asanga and his
    brother transmigrated into another realm.

In the field of debate, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would find out the areas they had contradicted and
that I would examine them and put forth my arguments,
the logician Dignaga (Digh-naga) and Dharmakirti tactfully
    bypassed me.

In the field of writing, I am [next to none!] [In my eyes,]
Arya-sura was just good at spreading the works, which
are like ‘disputes~ between an insect and a field.’

I am the learned man. Peerless in the field of teaching,
    debate and writing!

For some this passage might sound utterly nonsensical, but the most learned master of our age, the talented teacher, logician and writer, the late tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang (Yongs-‘dzin Khri-byang rDorje-‘Chang), said: “Now, some people of our time, who consider themselves learned scholars, think that this is utter nonsense; but they are wrong.”

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) wrote over 45 volumes of books dealing with many different subjects, such as the commentaries on the sutras and tantras, the saddhana manuals of the tutelary deities, history, religious history and so forth. Among these, one that is very important for all who wish to learn and meditate on the path-of the practical aspect of Buddhism in general and that of Vajrayana in particular is the Leg shey gyu de chi nam par shagpa kelsang gi yi trod (Legs bshad rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa skal bzang gi yid ‘phrod). In this book, he has explained precisely how the four tantras differ from one another. He has also fully described the stages of the two spontaneous path practices of the Vajrayana tradition, dealing with the ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission’, thus interpreting without mistake the intention of Adhi-Buddha Vajradhara.

May the reprint of this text, which the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is publishing herewith, bring peace and happiness in this world!

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama

Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.

After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.

The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.

His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.

Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.

Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.

The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 assistants of his mandala.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.

Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-

    1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-

    – Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
    – Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
    – Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
    – Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
    – Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.

    2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.

    3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.

    4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.

    5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.

    6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.

    7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

All Buddhists should be united together to spread the Buddha Dharma practice to the 10 directions, especially to those who have yet to hear, learn or practice the Dharma rather than spending time and energies to prevent or stop the growth of Dharma. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing Rinpoche’s point of view, deep and wide analysis, and crystal clear elaboration of the similarities between the ban of Dorje Shugden and the Karmapa issues with the letter written by His Eminence Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to request H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama to resolve the Karmapa issues. I sincerely hope H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama to clarify, rectify and resolve the Karmapa issues and lift the ban of Dorje Shugden practice for world peace and humanity. ?

For Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to voice up the situation happenning in Kagyu Buddhism takes a lot of guts. and bravery. Salute to him as the case note are more or less like Dorje Shugden controversy. Because of the Tibetan Leadership political agenda, many has suffered for the last decades just like what we are experiencing with the Shugden issue. The Tibetan leadership has infact cause family to split, cause disharmony among the people with no religion freedom, and segregated. The incident of Rumtek Monastery was one example that has cause violence against Karmapa Thaye Dorje . All to blame was by those who support the Tibetan leadership’s choice of Karmapa. Both sides of the Karma Kagyu divide, and so forth.
Thank you Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for sending a open letter to HH Dalai Lama on be half of the thousands or millions of Kagyu practitioners. With these more and more people will be aware of the issue and happenings. May HH Dalai Lama dissolve the Karmapa issues and Dorje Shugden ban soon.
And thank you Rinpochefor sharing this interesting post .

Its good to see this comment by ‘Suzy in Hawaii’ on Rinpoche’s YouTube Chanel. It has been 20 years of smear campaign against Dorje Shugden but today people who can think for themselves are beginning to look beyond prejudice to see the goodness of Dorje Shugdenand benefit from it. A government should not be the catalyst for such troubles, and divisiveness that divides Tibetans and Karma Kagyu practitioners up till this day. Any modern government who is after the well being and peace of its people should not support policies and methods that split the spiritual community and people at large.

I do hope the international community will be more aware of such politics thats is happening within the Tibetan community and is also played out in on the international scene, also on the internet.

Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa, Tibet

Over 400 years ago a great and learned lama Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was famed in Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and China for being very saintly and compassionate. He resided in his residence (Zimkhang Gongma Ladrang) in Drepung Monastery. His root guru was H.H. the Omniscient 4th Panchen Lama and his close dharma brother was the 5th Dalai Lama.

The 5th Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen had a very close and dharmic relationship and often went to receive teachings together from the 4th Panchen Lama. They were close in age. They both became very learned and well known. During this time, the Dalai Lama was enthroned as a Dharma King of Tibet. But more people went to see Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen for teachings, initiations and divinations. This made the attendants of the 5th Dalai Lama feel threatened that Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s fame might usurp the power of the 5th Dalai Lama. So they had a khata forced down his throat. At that moment, Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen dissolved his psychic winds and generated the wish to be a great guardian of Buddha and Tsongkapa’s teachings. As his consciousness dissolved, he entered ‘bardo’ as a dharma protector of the highest order (jikten depey sungma). Many signs were seen throughout Lhasa at this time and the earth was said to have shaken in Lhasa. This event was already predicted to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s previous incarnation when he was one of the 8 main disciples of Lord Tsongkapa the Supreme Master and he served Tsongkapa directly by building Gaden Monastery.

When the 5th Dalai Lama heard what his scheming and power-hungry attendants had done, he was very distressed. He was very sorry Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was murdered and dishonored as he was a great dharma master. The 5th Dalai Lama composed an apology to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. In Lhasa, tens of thousands gathered for the cremation of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s holy body. During the cremation, the 5th Dalai Lama’s apology was read out at which flames spontaneously arose from the body of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen commencing the cremation. From the body, during cremation, a powerful whirlwind of smoke tunneled into the sky for all to see as this was an indication Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s consciousness has arisen as the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. The Dharma Protector Setrap immediately recognized this new protector Dorje Shugden and ‘enthroned’ him as a powerful Dharma Protector in the realm of the Buddhas. From this, Setrap and Dorje Shugden are closely connected and very close working hand in hand always. After the cremation, the great 5th Dalai Lama built a Dorje Shugden chapel on the spot the cremation took place and named it Trode Khangsar. The 5th Dalai Lama commissioned the statue of Dorje Shugden in this chapel and had monks installed in the chapel to do continuous propitiations to Dorje Shugden. Trode Khangsar Chapel was a commemoration to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who was wronged and also a celebration of his consciousness arising as the World Peace Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

This Trode Khangsar Chapel still exists now in Lhasa where many make pilgrimages there. It is in good condition and was recently renovated. It is over 400 years old and a testimony to the respect the Great 5th Dalai Lama had to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who arose as Dorje Shugden.

I have visited this holy chapel in Lhasa years back. I’ve never heard of it till I was in Lhasa and by chance, I was told about it which I was happy to visit. I could not find the place but strangely a bunch of pilgrims from Amdo told me they would show me how to get there in Lhasa.

This short video is a short clip of this holy Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa today commemorating Dorje Shugden, built by the great 5th Dalai Lama. The great 5th Dalai Lama even composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden which is still available today and we can recite to invoke the blessings, protection, and assistance of World Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

The 5th Dalai Lama’s Prayer to Dorje Shugden

    HUM
Though unmoving from the sphere of primordial spontaneity,
With wrathful turbulent power, swifter than lightning,
Endowed with heroic courage to judge good and bad,
I invite you with faith, please come to this place!

Robes of a monk, crown adorned with rhinoceros leather hat,
Right hand holds ornate club, left holds a human heart,
Riding various mounts such as nagas and garudas,
Who subdues the mamos of the charnel grounds, praise to you!

Samaya substances, offerings and torma, outer, inner and secret,
Favourite visual offerings and various objects are arranged.
Although, previously, my wishes were a bit dense,

Thank you Rinpoche for this article, as I see It is not Dorje Shugden or practitioners who are destroying Tibetan unity, it is the Tibet government politic divisive actions are splitting families, traditions and communities down in middle. Very sad . _/\_

The leadership of a country is to maintain peace and harmony among the people, a good leadership should be neutral and not to take side. In the Karmapa controversy or Dorje Shugden controvery, Tibetan leadership should find a way to diminish their differences. It is like in a family, if the parents have 2 children and they are in a disagreements, the parents will not take side but they will find a way to resolve the differences between the 2 children. Imagine if the parents take side, what will happen? There will be no peace in the family.

How Tibetan leadership handles the Karmapa and Dorje Shugden controversy is not bringing Tibetan people any closer, tension is built up among the community. This is so unnecessary. For as long as there is no harmony, there will not be much results in the things that we do. I hope Tibetan leadership sees this.

  27. Justin Cheah on May 30, 2016 at 9:31 pm

The whole problem i can summarise it is because of the Tibetan Leadership. Like Tsem Rinpoche highlighted in the article, why there is sectarianism in Tibetan Buddhism? Why a Tibetan Political Leader can have power to meddle into a Tibetan Buddhism sect’ Spiritual Affairs? If they really are empowered to do so even, why will they want to divide by recognising one of the candidate and not both? Why will they even want to create stir into the community and make them confuse and fight each other rather than concentrate in whatever they strived for the Tibetans which is one of them must be regaining Tibet? I can totally relate this issue together with what Rinpoche is facing after declaring Dorje Shugden practice. I hope all confusion and ban will cease as there are too many unnecessary scuffles happening right now preventing people from becoming more into Dharma. More and more people are opting to shy away from these issues especially the neutrals as well as the mainstream Buddhists looking at the ‘mess’ created by the Tibetan Leadership. I too will have high respect to Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for speaking out. I find this letter is powerful and will inspire more Sangha members to come out and make their voices heard. I think with more people coming out to speak about Dorje Shugden and any unjust, this will make more people coming out to show their feelings and echo the unjust. This i hope will create more Tibetan Leadership to stop interfering into spiritual matter not forgetting lifting the ban of Dorje Shugden!

Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter is so direct and factual. Finally there’s someone besides Dorje Shugden practitioners who speaks up and demand for religious freedom from the Tibetan leadership. Despite the potential life treatening attacks from the Tibetan Leadership, Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s courage and determination to speak up has shed some lights to those that are under constant attacks by the Dalai Lama’s people.

The comparison chart of this Karma Kagyu and Gelug’s Dorje Shugden issue shows exactly how Dalai Lama’s people suppress, obstruct and stop the growth of Dharma just because they are into power games and political games. If you want to play political games, please get out of our way! A genuine Lama like Tsem Rinpoche and Karmapa Thaye Dorje have devoted their whole life study, meditate, uphold and spread the holy Dharma just with the whole purpose of benefitting others. And your (CTA) sole purpose seems to destroy the system of Buddhism? What benefit do you get out of it? Money? Fame? Power? Authority? It seems….none of it..so far.

If CTA is a real democratic government body, you would not take away people’s religious freedom, what harm did we inflict on you the Tibetan Government when we practice Dorje Shugden? The Dalai Lama is still strong and healthy now and this conflicts with what was claimed earlier that if people practice Dorje Shugden, it will shorten DL’s life, but it has been over 20 years, nothing happened on DL, and i wish DL good health and long life from the bottom of my heart, as DL is an enlightened Buddha.

Is very heartbreaking to read about the division in the Karma Kagyu lineage. Because of the Tibetan Leadership political agenda, many has suffered just like what we are experiencing with the Shugden issue.

What the Tibetan Leadership is doing has the effect of the divide and conquer strategy to weaken both the Karma Kagyu and Gelugpa lineage for political reasons. This is exactly why I totally disagree when politics are mix together with spirituality.

Is very good that His Eminence Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche speak out about this issue, the more is spoken out, the more others will be aware of the issue. When we have information and from there we can conclude on our own. Information is important here as the world has evolved. The public has access to the internet and they can research/share/debate to derive to their own conclusion. Faith base on knowledge is not shakable whereas, blind faith is. That is what my Lama, Tsem Rinpoche has taught us.

Thanks Rinpoche for the article about religious freedom restriction Tibetan community.

I salute Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for speaking up on the unfairness and discrimination he witnessed during the visits of Karmapa Thaye Dorje Rinpoche to Taiwan and Ladakh.

The recognition of Karmapa by Tai Situ Rinpoche who back by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Tibetan leadership has split Karma Kagyu. Not only that, the involvement of Gelugpa leader and the government in Karma Kagyu leader reincarnation recognition has also turned this holy spiritual celebration into a political issue which affects hundereds thousands of practitioners. The only intention I and many can think of is to control another lineage by having a spiritual leader recognized by Tibetan leadership.

The article also pointing out how Tibetan leadership has been not giving real democracy and religious freedom to the people. Thanks to the era of internet and social media, one can speak up easier than before even they still have to put their life and safety to risks.

Religion and spiritual practices are aim to teach the practitioners how to achieve eternal happiness, but the political elements that mix into them turned them to tool to control and split the communities.

No matter which Karmapa people take refuge on, they want happiness; same as Dorje Shugden practitioners, people to continue to practice Dorje Shugden even there’s a ban, it’s an action of Guru Devotion and faith, that they want happiness too.

If the Tibetan leadership continues such uncivilized acts that only benefit themselves as a corrupted government, they will lose more things in the end just like how they have lost their country 60 years ago.

It’s a very direct letter from Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche and this letter shows how Central Tibetan Government has interfered in Karma Kagyu and Gelugpa’s religious matters; and has caused so much pain and sufferings.

Finally, another group of people who has been suffered from the interference speaks up bravely. It’s not approriate for a government to get their hand in religious matter, for it would caused disharmony in the society and among the people. We might able to predict what consequences Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche might be facing, just as many who say no to Tibetan leadership will face up with many negative actions, label and etc. However, for Tibetan leadership might fear accused as sectarian, they might refrain in their actions taken towards Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche.

From the letter, one should be able to learn that, when these kind of interference by a government into religious matter, out of political mativation, for political interest, it’s not neccessary the religion/subject being “bad” or have done anything harmful or could pose any negative impact which caused the government to meddle in. For Dorje Shugden ban, it’s so. For Karmapa’s recognition of 17th karmapa is so as well.

To discuss about the “political reasons” behind the Dorje Shugden or for Rinpoche to blog about Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s letter to HH Dalai Lama, is not because Rinpoche would like to mix up politics with religion. Instead, Rinpoche like those who speak up, advocate to have politics or politicians refrain and keep away from interfering religious matter and bring disharmony to the community/society.

    Thank you.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing what is happening now in the Tibetan Buddhists communities on the issues of two Kamarpa that CTA has imposed the right for religious freedom. It is not about which Karmapa is the “right” one. I respect both of them as both has been working hard to spread Dharma to many people. Just like the Shugden teachers and lamas has been spreading Dharma to many. The main issue is that due to this Kamarpa issues and Dorje Shugden ban, there is division in Tibetan Buddhism, people losing faith in their teachers and worse, Buddhism in general.

I would also like to express my respect to Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for speaking up for his religious freedom and his tradition. It is not easy to do that to do that publicly as he may received backlash by criticising the Tibetan leadership. I send him my best wishes.

I sincerely pray that HH Dalai Lama will solve the Karmapa issues and Dorje Shugden ban and all can practice in harmony.

Reading the letter from Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s to the Dalai Lama, It is quite unbelievable that the Karmapa is accused of worshipping Dorje Shugden just as to discredit his teachings which are supposed to be tainted if he is a DS worshipper.

The authorities of the Tibetan people in exile, CTA, is definitely using all possible ways to continue their invalid right to the ban on Dorje Shugden and at the same time gain some control over the Karma Kagyu tradition.

Buddhism is pure and the Dharma benefits sentient beings, whichever may be the doctrine that is accepted by a Devotee. It is wrong view to think otherwise. However when control and greed for power which by nature is political then the whole tenet of Buddhism is distorted to the level of grave negativities.

Thank you Rinpoche for this article which also highlights to me that the CTA in the name of the Dalai Lama is also doing their utmost to control other Vajrayana traditions and impose the right to religious freedom.

In this very month, Buddhist all around the world celebrate Lord Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and parinirvana. This is very month of remembering every of the Lord Buddha’s qualities and teachings. All Buddhist should celebrate this auspicious month and day in joy and peace, but this seems to be impossible to some Buddhist , for example Buddhist who have been discriminated even oppressed due to the Dorje Shugden issue and Karmapa issue.

If we are the genuine followers of Lord Buddha, we should all practice compassion, equality and kindness. Dear His Holiness Dalai Lama, please allow us to practice Dorje Shugden freely not being humiliated, please ask Your followers to stop putting down Dorje Shugden or Karmapa Tharye Dorje.

This is my only wish for 2016 Wesak/Saga Dawa. Please stop the hate already. Hatred towards Dorje Shugden or Karmapa Tharye Dorje’s followers is destroying and harming Buddhadharma, nothing else does.

Thanks Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s dare to voice out the real situation happen in Kagyu Buddhism. If this letter not disclose, I am sure many outsider still not clear about the controversy within Dalai Lama,Kagyu ,Gelug and the religious freedom issue in Tibet.
In my point of view, the situation in Kagyu is about same as DS practising in Gelug Buddhism which DS practitioner had been discriminated. Politic shouldn’t involve in Buddhism. H.H Dalai Lama get involved in Kaygu lineage will caused division in their lineage.Karmapa incarnation should be follow the tradition of Kagyu lineage and not follow the leader of Tibetan.
In Tibetan Buddhism, guru devotion is crucial element for a practitioner to have high attainment .Practitioner must devoted to their Guru’s lineage .I hope Tibetan Buddhism will not divided by political issue.Religious freedom must be practiced to let more people get benefits on dharma.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this article. It is very informative and interesting to read on this article.

Dear Tashi, Certainly everything Guru Rinpoche predicts is correct. Nothing he says can be wrong. The dharma is in the decline now but lucky there are still lamas and practitioners left that are sincere.

Buddha’s teachings will last for 5,000 years and we are halfway through it. So we still have hope.

This article on Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is very good as it shows the truth of what is happening within Kagyu Buddhism. Sad though to see. Nice to see Tsem Rinpoche give support to Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche and they are from different traditions. This is good.

This is good.— Yes this is how it should be as we are all Dharma brothers and sisters through our methods are slightly different but the goal is the same – Enlightenment and should rejoice in each others good works to spread Dharma. That is how our Rinpoche has always taught us and to respect each other. There is no discrimination, the Buddhas don’t and taught us not too. In reality the same mind stream… 🙂

  40. Mingwen on May 14, 2016 at 12:53 am

Freedom, a component that all sentient being need. The poor work hard to be free from starving, boss work hard to free from the need to worry in term of materialism, Buddhist work hard to collect merits to purify one’s negative karma and ultimately find enlightenment in oneself. The same concept goes to the realm of animal and other realms.

As a human being, the freedom to practice in specific religion what one wanted to is precious and pure, no one should stop another to walk his/her own life out, therefore, there is no need to mention about interrupting an individual’s spiritual path.

However, maybe H.H Dalai Lama has his own positive motives behind everything that “superficially’ seem negative. Human like us may not able to realise it because we are, in fact, superficial.

Thank you, Rinpoche and team for presenting this blog post it act as a great platform for everyone to think and understand.

When i first encounter Tibetan Buddhism,I’m raised my question to Rinpoche about Dorje Shugden ban. Rinpoche advised me was if I’m interested learning buddhism,he is welcoming me as student. If I’m interested in political issue, then he advised me look for others guru. I’m remembered clearly he said this is Tibetan politic, you are not Tibetan so don’t involve any of it.

Many years has pass, Dorje Shugden ban has affected many people suffered of separation among Gelupa lineage especially DS practitioner, monks in monastery and Tibetian who had faith in Dorje Shugden. I’m ready hope H.H. Dalai Lama and see people are sincere follow what they had believe, please lift up this horible ban soon.People have a right to choose what they wish to believe.Same like Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche request for the religion freedom.Everyone reserved treat equally choosing right path of lord Buddha teaching.

Why can’t people who practice their own faith be left alone? Why must politics be involved? Religious freedom is definitely not happening anymore the way I see it.

Having Dorje Shugden ban is already damaging enough and now we have conflict among the Karmapas. Why can’t the Karmapas be left on their own to do their own choosing? Why must HHDL be involved? HHDL can’t even keep the Gelugpas at peace. Look at what the ban is doing. People got hurt, ostracized, murdered, bullied, hated, etc. but HHDL is not saying anything to prevent nor stop it. Almost everyday our Guru, is being mocked, hated and vulgarity spawn at Him. Why?? Because our guru practice Dorje Shugden and He speaks up.
Why can’t HHDL tell His people to stop? Instead He chose to meddle in other sect’s decision making.

Where is the compassion, Chenrezig? Can you please lift the ban for the sake of our religious freedom? Can you please stop confusing people when you meddle in other things rather than of Gelugpa’s? We urgently need peace and compassion from you.

    • Boon on May 13, 2016 at 11:31 pm

HHDL mentioned about the practice of Dorje Shugden being destructive. Isn’t obvious now that the true destruction are created by the ones who discriminate against the practice?

  43. Pastor Moh Mei on May 13, 2016 at 11:30 am

Ideally I think most of us still want to believe in the purity of religion and spirituality. In reality, it seems no religion is exempted from worldly influences of power, money and sex. Buddhism appeared to be the least scandalous so to speak but on closer examination it doesn’t appear to be so. This is of course putting aside any reasoning or whether the motivations and the occurrences of these events are of of karmic causes, divine play or the likes. Superficially, as we look at the Dorje Shugden ban and the Karmapa controversy, Buddhism appears to be just as corrupted by politics and power play.

Religious leaders like The Pope, His Holiness The Dalai Lama, etc holds tremendous influence over the fate of many. Throughout history, no religious leaders have even been exempted from faults and mistakes. From the spiritual aspect, devotees of many practices are “required” to view their Gurus as faultless. From a secular aspect, many of their acts cannot be seen as faultless. Sex and money scandals are almost considered common nowadays in the religious community.

Why are the Lamas, people who are supposedly highly attained and holders of pure lineage and practices allow all these plays to happen. We question why does HH The Dalai Lama allows it but he is not the only one that “allows” it. Is HH The Dalai Lama the only attained Lama in Tibetan Buddhism. There are many and aren’t they all equally responsible? One convenient reason comes to mind – that it is the karma of the people of this generation that is allowing it. The degeneration of dharma, of spirituality of mankind is inevitable because it is already prophesied. It like telling someone you can change your fate but I have foresee your future that you wouldn’t. You can but you wouldn’t do it anyway.

Even if the Dorje Shugden conflict is resolved, would it signal the end to anything. It seems more likely that it would just be replaced by yet another conflict. If HH The Dalai Lama steps down or enter clear light, would it end any conflict or would it be the beginning of even worst power struggle and conflict for leadership.

On the Karmapa conflict, I personally think it is unfair to blame HH The Dalai Lama. He can choose who he meets with. The Karma Kagyu themselves need to resolve this issue and make a stand if in fact their spiritual leadership and lineage is to be independent of other schools. If you believe in your own sovereignty as it should be, then act as such. But when you don’t make a stand, you are allowing others to exert authority over you. You are equally responsible.

  44. Li Kheng on May 13, 2016 at 11:10 am

The invasion of other lineages is just the “natural” next step the CTA and Tibetan leadership would take. Why? Because they are permitted to. Logically, if no one stops you from doing something, it is implied consent.

This is the dangers of accepting injustice. Once you have accepted once in one scenario, you kind of set precedence for similar context of breaches in different but similar scenarios.

This is why the ban on Dorje Shugden must end. So that the CTA knows that they will not be allowed to continue their atrocious actions anymore!

  45. June Kang on May 12, 2016 at 11:39 pm

Whenever the Religion leader interfering our believes, it always created suffering for us the practitioners, and i can’t see what is the benefit for both parties.

In Buddha’s teaching, we are all dependent on each others and all others beings want happiness and not suffer. And whatever the Tibetan leader is doing right now is created more suffering and why can’t they see it. Is that they created with the purpose to lead us to have more understanding of each other so that we can get enlightenment faster?

But for sure is article like this always make us think and get more knowledge for our practice, it helps.

The letter wrote by Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s show that he has no fear and his action is allowing Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje to be able to disseminate the Dharma in freedom. Thanks for doing so.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article,

This article has widen my perspective on the Karma Kagyu dilemma. Neither the ban of Dorje Shugden nor the dividing of the Karma Kagyu school are beneficial to the practitioner. The action will only create more and more suffering between the practitioners and weakened the spread of the dharma.

I believe there will be more and more people standing up to call for religious freedom in the nearest future.

Looking forward to more and more people to stand up for religious freedom.

    Humbly with hand folded,

The Tibetan govt in exile ‘rule’ only over 150,000 Tibetan exiles in India/Nepal. That’s it. With so little people they still cannot do a good job. It’s time for them to retire. They make nothing but problems. For the last 50 years, they have not secured any independence or autonomy for Tibet and that is how badly they failed. They like to blame scapegoats to take the attention away from their failure like using Shugden that has been around for 400 years.

Bhutan the neighboring country to Tibet has only 770,000 people in their tiny Kingdom yet no one has invaded their country because their govt had been doing a good job for centuries.

Nepal another smaller poor Himalayan nation has 27 million in population neighboring with their 1.2 billion strong nation of China. But Nepal has been sovereign and safe for hundreds of years also. How come Tibet failed in safeguarding their nation with all their protectors, Nechung, Lamas, Dalai Lama and gods? Because their governance is rancid with corruption, stupidity, backwardness and self gain. Even the gods cannot help corruption. And it continues to this day within the Tibetan exiles.

The Tibetan leadership real interests are only in power and money. They are not interested in the welfare of their people and would go all the way to stop, degrade, undermine and bully anyone who stands in their way for their quest of power and money. They use all sorts of methods especially religious ones to mask their greed. And they often use the name of the Dalai Lama to manipulate the people so they can continue to control and gain financially.

I am perplexed as to why the Dalai Lama has remained quiet over the ill treatment of his people from the ban on Dorje Shugden practice. But instead said that no one was hurt by the Central Tibetan Administration. Surely the Dalai Lama knows what is happening around him. Yet he remains quiet while people continue to suffer.

I do not see kindness, I do not see compassion, I do not see wisdom. What I do see is seeking more power and money grabbing by the CTA.

Buddhism, known for its teachings on wisdom and compassion and eradication of the ego, is being made a mockery of by these people in CTA.

Buddhism, the pride of Tibet, is being destroyed by these greedy Tibetans internally, and not externally. And of course, CTA blames China, Dorje Shugden and the lamas who continue to practice. Next they might blame Yeti/Bigfoot/Sasquatch, extraterrestrials, whatever, so they could continue to stay in power and continue to loot the wealth from the people.

HHDL’s influence over Tibetans and his followers is phenomena, and it is a known fact worldwide. His advice had never been taken lightly. And to openly back one than the other Karmapa candidate is akin to meddling in the tradition of Karma Kaygu tradition. This act divides Karma Kagyu school into two mutually exclusive camps. Is it not creating schism amongst the sangha community? Creating schism amongst the sangha community is a heinous crime as warned by Lord Buddha.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this news with us, it really opens my eyes to learn that many people are blind faith towards the person in power.

    Humbly, bowing down,

    Dear Tsem Rinpoche la,

Thank you for relaying my letter on your blog and for bringing so many relevant and well documented issues to the forefront. I am grateful for your support. However, I would like to mention that, although I acted as General Secretary to the Kagyu lineage for a number of years ago, this is no longer the case. This means that my views in this letter are strictly personal: I wanted to bring to everyone’s knowledge attitudes and events that I have witnessed – together with many others – over a lifetime of devoted service to the Kagyu lineage.

The current General Secretary of the Kagyu lineage is Venerable Lama Jigme Rinpoche. As you mentioned, I am currently active in Nepal (including to coordinate relief and reconstruction efforts following the earthquake), as well as in Singapore and more generally in Asia. I also regularly travel the world to teach in Karma Kagyu Centres. I support with all my strength the relentless work of His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Taye Dorje, to bring Buddha Dharma to the world.

      Dear Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche,

I am very glad to see Rinpoche’s comment here, not least of all because it gives me an opportunity to thank Rinpoche directly for how much you have lifted my spirits with Rinpoche’s courage and honesty.

When my friends and I first read Rinpoche’s letter of May 1 2016, we were simply elated, and our faith restored, that a senior monk of the Tibetan spiritual establishment has the fortitude to say and do what is right in spite of it not being the most popular thing to do these days.

For years now, I have witnessed Tsem Rinpoche stand up, not against anything or anyone I can see, but for something Tsem Rinpoche truly believes in, which is the preservation of key traditions, and religious freedom. I have also seen some of the repercussions as the result. And so, I can safely say I have some idea of the costs that comes from simply doing the proper thing.

What I find inspiring and important, is not so much the Karma Kagyu and the Gelug issues that both Rinpoche and Tsem Rinpoche respectively stand for, but the fact that truth cannot be so simply silenced and that there are people who are not afraid. We see things that are patently wrong and we see perpetrators get away with many things because they are strong. And we lose hope but when we see what Rinpoche and Tsem Rinpoche have done, it validates again all we know to be true and good.

Once again, I thank you Rinpoche.

      Sincerely,
      Martin

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing Rinpoche’s point of view, deep and wide analysis, and crystal clear elaboration of the similarities between the ban of Dorje Shugden and the Karmapa issues with the letter written by His Eminence Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to request H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama to resolve the Karmapa issues. I am truly saddened about the issues and problems that are happening in Karma Kagyu lineage as well as deep worry about the separation of many Buddhist lineages where violence, hatred and political intervention took place in order to achieve certain objectives which are not aligned with Buddha’s teachings but more to own human’s negativities.

All Buddhists should be united together to spread the Buddha Dharma practice to the 10 directions, especially to those who have yet to hear, learn or practice the Dharma rather than spending time and energies to prevent or stop the growth of Dharma. If more and more people are getting the false impression of Buddha Dharma with the Karmapa issues and Dorje Shugden issue continue to exist, it will even make the Dharma practice more difficult to grow and harder to fight against the ever-fast-increasing of ignorance, hatred and attachment in the current degenerate age.

I sincerely request H.H. The 14th Dalai Lama to clarify, rectify and resolve the Karmapa issues and lift the ban of Dorje Shugden practice for world peace and humanity.

Thank you Rinpoche for taking all the pain, sufferings and discrimination from anti-Shugdens in order to spread and protect Dorje Shugden practice for the benefits of all sentient beings and many generations to come.

    With folded hands,

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the letter written by Karma Kagyu’s Lodrel Rabsel Rinpoche to the Dalai Lama voicing his shock and disappointment and asking the Dalai Lama to stop curbing the religious freedom of the Karma Kagyu followers. This letter brings the issue of religious freedom yet again to the forefront. The fact that the Karma Kagyus are being targeted by the Dalai Lamas and CTA, in their recognizing one Karmapa candidate and not recognizing the other, shows that there is a willful attempt by the Tibetan political leaders to exert control over the different Tibetan schools of Buddhism.

First it was the Gelug Lineage. By imposing a ban, instantly, Gelug followers were divided into 2 camps, the Shugden practitioners and the non-Shugden practitioners. The Shugden followers were segregated and discriminated against and suffered tremendously from persecution ostracism and the like. Now, it is happening with the Karma Kagyus. By the Dalai Lama recognizing and endorsing Orgyen Trinley Dorje as a Karmapa candidate, and turning his back on the other Karmapa candidate, Trinley Thaye Dorje , the damaging consequences are that Trinley Thaye Dorje and followers are being abused and curbed wherever he goes, by Orgyen Trinley’s supporters and followers. So a split and divide has taken place within the Karma Kagyu Lineage.

It is brave of Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to speak up, as he can face a few consequences that includes threats and violence against him; and even his life may be at risk.

However, this also goes to show that the Tibetan leadership is using all means to increase their strangle-hold on the people through the acts of causing a split to occur to divide religious groups into two. There is no care for peace and stability. instead of upholding peace in a supposedly democratic society, they are in fact creating turbulence and
    unrest .

In fact, as Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche says in his letter, the Dalai Lama just needs to speak up , and intervene for peace and freedom to be restored. The Dalai Lama is being asked here to practice peace and freedom like what he has time and again advocated in international conferences.

We sincerely hope that the Dalai Lama will heed Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s plea.

  53. Julia Tan on May 10, 2016 at 12:42 pm

After reading the article, I feel extremely sad and disappointed once again to Dalai Lama. I am very sorry to know that Karma Kagyu is facing the same problems as we Dorje Shugden practitioners are facing right now. So much of discrimination, violence, being controlled, manipulated and bullied. The Dalai Lama created sectarian, schism and divisive among lineages so that he can easily control his power.

We are very fortunate to have our Guru H.E. The 25th Tsem Rinpoche who has been working very hard to protect the pure lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa. Rinpoche has to face all the difficulties and hardship even life threatened issues for that. So much time and efforts got to put in so that we and our next generation will continue to receive this holy teaching. I have come to realise that why protector practices are so important.

I definitely do not want to be one of The Dalai Lama’s political victims. Instead of giving teachings and practicing the Buddha Dharma and saving all sentient beings, Dalai Lama chose to waste so much time and energy to plan, to plot and to execute all the dirty tricks on his political issues.

Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for preserving the pure Dharma so that we and our next generations will have the opportunity to practice.

  55. Lester on May 9, 2016 at 11:03 am

    Dear Rinpoche,

This issue is a hard nut to crack. When so many Buddhist masters relented to CTA’s engineered controversies, whether Shugden ban or Karmapa disputes, I believe it is not just under material and political pressures, more importantly perhaps, they must have believed that these unhappiness most probably are well-meaning costs to pay for a ‘higher good’, i.e. preservation and promotion of the Tibetan cause. For HHDL, a Gelug leader and symbolically the priest-king of Tibet, to intervene in the Kagyud Karma system and endorse the 17th Karmapa is like anointing a non-sectarian religious head of Tibetan Buddhism who is otherwise of a more narrow sectarian stature. The latter is likely to be the successor of the former. The Shugden ban too smelt of an identical manoeuvre. Gelug exclusiveness ought to be dismantled for the greater purpose of forging a modern and unified Tibetan nationalism. For centuries, Tibetan political institutions have been the vessels and framework upon which Vajrayana traditions and pantheon are protected. Religion and politics are two sides of the same coin, mutually reinforcing each other, at least for the mainstream schools. As the logic goes, so long as the regime sustains, so will the faith. Hence vast support for HHDL. From the perspective of religiosity however, these controversies are the worst forms of schism, among many other unspeakable infractions. Since most of us are not Tibetans, we would naturally sympathise with the spiritual side of the logic. I wish all parties well, and may ultimate truth prevails over harsh temporal realities.

    • Denny on May 9, 2016 at 8:59 pm

You have a good way of looking at things. I wanted to give you a thought. The Dalai Lama is a Gelug lama. Karmapa is a Kagyu Lama. At least Dalai Lama has some training in the other three schools of Buddhism for the last 30 years as he is a King and must have a overall knowledge of all Schools of Buddhism of Tibet. So he would have to know practices of others schools of Buddhism. The Karmapa is not being trained in any Gelug practices and traditionally has not ever given any Gelug practices. If he becomes a secular leader of Tibet, he will marginalize the Gelugs. Dalai Lama does give practices and initiations to the public that belong to other schools of Buddhism. Karmapa never gives any Gelug teachings/practices to the public so far neither has his previous life.

As long as Karmapa is Kagyu, if he is a secular leader, then the government will be dominated by Kagyu style of doing things-which is not bad-but also not fair. It will be the same as Dalai Lama running things in the government in a predominantly Gelug framework currently and for the last 400 hundred years. So it defeats the purpose.

The solution is to not have any spiritual leaders and monks run a government. The country should be run democratically. Karmapa does not have the training and education to run a country. Also there is this huge controversy hanging over Karmapa, which one is the real one?

      • Valentina Suhendra on May 10, 2016 at 8:05 am

        Dear Denny

I agree with your view that secular and spiritual leaders should be kept separate but not for the reason that religious leaders are not capable of governing. But I just think that a secular leaders should be impartial.

      • Lester on May 10, 2016 at 9:27 am

        Hi Denny,

Thanks for your kind reply. Before I go further, let me clarify that I am not some fifth column planted here to sabotage Rinpoche’s cause. I have received benefits from Lord Shugden practice. I am a believer. I think more people should partake in this blessings as well. My humble opinion is that the traditional way of advocating that the DS ban be lifted, through the one-sided bad Buddhists versus good Buddhists approach, however indirectly as promoted here, may not be working. Shugden organisations like NKT have been questioning and undermining the CTA (and HHDL by that extension) for decades, but how far has this strategy got them? I think the way forward is to show both perspectives of the issue objectively, and let the reader be his or her own judge. HHDL is neither unreasoned nor heretical. He is merely playing out the political responsibilities entrusted to him as a Dalai Lama. Tibet is more important to him than the Gelugpa school. Like a game of chess, this is not about morality. If the truth be reflected objectively, with the considerations of both sides clearly elucidated, I am sure most spiritual practitioners will know which point of view to choose. This is better than a purely one-sided approach because a more holistic and comprehensive analysis at hand will not only attract quality people to the Shugden cause, those against can also be silenced. By being non-partisan through stating facts as they are, not putting down CTA whenever the opportunity arises, Shugdenpas can emerge as the next force that promotes reconciliation between exiled Tibetans and Beijing, without compromising the integrity of Gelugpa practices. After all, politics is all about advancing one’s position through seeking and exploiting common interests. 🙂 Just my two cents.

        • Denny on May 12, 2016 at 11:34 pm

Dear Lester, You have really good views.

I am not saying you are saying so, but Tsem Rinpoche has always been polite, humble and pleading towards His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Tsem Rinpoche as far as I know never attended any protests (ISC/NKT) or online vulgarities against Dalai Lama. (Some of the NKT Kelsangs were so nasty, vulgar and rude in their comments about the Dalai Lama. I was shocked how can monks and nuns speak like so to anyone. They lost themselves in their desperation to defame Dalai Lama). In fact from what I have read from Tsem Rinpoche’s post, he has always been conciliatory, pleading and begging in fact. That really earned my respect. When the oppressed are still humble, logical and polite in their approach. Tsem Rinpoche won over legions of people because of this. We have to make a clear divide between NKT/ISC and Tsem Rinpoche.

What I am saying is I agree totally with your statement, “Shugdenpas can emerge as the next force that promotes reconciliation between exiled Tibetans and Beijing”. This is excellent. This is what Tsem Rinpoche is trying to do it seems. More should jump on the bandwagon and support Tsem Rinpoche in this. When I saw his video by Tsem Rinpoche of why he practices Dorje Shugden, I was amazed at his humility and conciliatory tone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxC6uKHM3dY&nohtml5=False

Since the ban started against Dorje Shugden people what has it accomplished. This practice has been around for four hundred years exactly the same time as the Dalai Lama’s institution.

          1. Tibet is not free after 50 years and not close to it either.
          2. Tibetans are not in harmony with themselves due to the Rangzen/Umaylam dramas.
          3. Corrupt elections of Sikyong.
          4. Eliminating Lukar Jam as a candidate when his chances were strong.
          5. Recently Dalai Lama, the oracles (Nechung, Tseringma) both scolding the two Sikyong candidates.
          6. The two Karmapa issues still creating violence and unresolved.
          And so on and son.

Nothing has been achieved by the Dorje Shugden ban and it was a mistake. But too much ego and pride to admit it. Dalai Lama is 80 and how long does he have. The Tibetan govt in exile only ‘rule’ over 150,000 Tibetans in exile in India. China controls all six millions in Tibet and controls Tibet. Do you think China is afraid of Tibetan govt in exile? No way. China is just waiting for Dalai Lama to pass and then the end of the exiles. India will never treat the Tibetans the same once Dalai Lama is gone.

What does the exiled Tibetans in India contribute to India? Nothing at all. No hospitals, no aid, no financial help, no benefits. They don’t even become proper Indian citizens and pay taxes. They are exempt for 99 years. Only headaches are given to Tibetans.

The Dalai Lama after 50 years has not secured Tibet back in full independence or autonomy. There are no round table talks between China and Dalai Lama because Dalai Lama will not humble down to China for the sake of his people. If Dalai Lama makes good friends with China, then Tibetans in Tibet will have it easier. Dalai Lama being friends with Western nations gets him 10-15 million dollars in donations to run his govt in exile per year but the Western governments are making trillion dollar deals with China for the betterment of their economies. No viable Western, Japanese government will side with Tibet. In fact their policies are Tibet is an unalienable part of China-The end. So the Dalai Lama is wasting time with the Western governments. He needs to swallow his pride and reach out to China and the first thing to do is to STOP VISITING WESTERN COUNTRIES. He must please China because China holds the power and Tibet. Once he makes the concessions to China on behalf of his people in Tibet, there is hope of bargaining towards a autonomy or special sector like Hong Kong for Tibet. Dalai Lama’s answer lies with China and not the West. His oracles are obviously not advising him correctly.

Putting a Dorje Shugden ban further irritates China because it creates division within Tibetan communities in Tibet. People who practice have to ‘fight’ with people who don’t because of the Dalai Lama’s orders. The ban has brought nothing but headaches, shame, protests, confusion, breaking up of monasteries and families and divided the Tibetans further. The ban against Shugden was one of the worst political policies in Dalai Lama’s dictatorship or rule. What he says goes like North Korea. China could care less about Shugden. So remove the ban and China stops supporting Shugdenpas (if that is the truth) and the end to that. So simple. What is more important? The Shugden people practicing their religion of 400 years or cutting China out of the picture?

So many lamas and their tens of thousands of disciples practice Dorje Shugden:

Lester, I am in agreement with what you are saying, but my point is this illegal ban against Shugden is like the hatred of the Jews because of their religion. Voodoo, witchcraft was banned in North America for 100 years and many suffered. Witchcraft banned and the witch-hunts of Europe killed tens of thousands sanctioned by the Popes of their time. Eastern Religions were considered devil worship in USA by majority prior to the 1960’s before their strong advent. Now witchcraft and voodoo are state recognized religions and protected by the very governments that condemned them in the past and killed/tortured their adherents. Eastern Religions are the fastest growing in Europe and America where they were demonized in the past. Religious persecution of any kind is wrong. The Tibetan govt is wrong in this religious demonization of Dorje Shugden. Completely wrong.

Thank you for your exchanges. I do enjoy them.

          Photos:

          China’s parliament

No way Tibetan govt in exile can defeat China. No countries of any significance support Tibet’s independence. They are just humoring the Dalai Lama and they find him to be entertaining and warm but not enough to support his cause.

          • Lester on May 13, 2016 at 9:49 am

Hi Denny, thanks for the insightful reply. Time will indeed mitigate the disputes that we are looking at here. The current landscape would be radically transformed once 14th HHDL passes on. HHDL knows that. A huge void could also appear if HH Orygen Trinley’s power and influence are not sufficiently entrenched. Thinking on purely strategic terms, this is Shugdenpas’ historical moment. Be that as it may, there will be intense competition. Perhaps KH has been forming alliances with Shugden monasteries and masters both within and beyond PRC. Also, Rinpoche’s biological background, spiritual lineage and incarnations be duly documented, verified and recognised (authoritatively), to prepare for the fateful years ahead. A lot of work to be done if the teachings were to be propagated with Rinpoche posited as a major, if not, the pinnacle figure of the Gelugpa ‘renaissance’. Again, just random ramblings from an observer. Wish you and all a good day. 🙂

      • Lester on May 10, 2016 at 9:39 am

Now Denny, in reply to your queries. I do not think CTA wants a full democracy. In my opinion, they are moving towards a system that is akin to constitutional monarchy, just like Malaysia or England. A prime minister and a cabinet. Head of state will be a priest king, which could be HHDL or maybe later on, the Karmapa. The Karmapa needs not have the lineages of teachings of every schools. All he needs is to be charismatic and approachable. Just like the Agung of Malaysia, he is just the better of the several. Politically wise, I do not think that Karma Kagyu will strive to dominate everyone else. Just like how HHDL has as far as possible portrayed himself with the least Gelugpa exclusiveness. That is the only way to rule a modern divided Tibetan community as a titular head. And yes, Karmapa influence with the other schools has increased leaps and bounds. Just look at this year’s Karma Karyu Monlam. He is getting endorsements from various quarters, including H.H. Sakya Trizin. His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa speaks Chinese, writes Chinese calligraphy, has disciples in mainland China and overseas Chinese communities, does not criticise DS, viewed favourably by Beijing and Tibetans, is well slated to be the next titular Tibetan leader. This is not my own opinion, but the judgement of most Tibetan and China observers. 🙂

        • Denny on May 13, 2016 at 12:38 am

          Dear Lester,

The only thing Karmapa has going for him is he has not spoken against Dorje Shugden. That is interesting that he has not been forced to do so. The minute he does, he is finished, because he will have to comment on the other political issues once that door opens up. And there are two Karmapas and the fight between the two factions are getting worse: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/karma-kagyus-lodreu-rabsel-rinpoche-asks-the-dalai-lama-for-religious-freedom.html

Even if Karmapa goes back to China, he will never usurp or be above the Panchen Lama. The Karmapa’s rank is way below that of Panchen Lama. Panchen Lama is state sanctioned by China, speaks fluent Chinese/Tibetan, well versed in scriptures and groomed to be the spiritual leader by China. All he has to do is be charismatic, smile and be ‘nice’ and he will be way above Karmapa. Remember not everyone accepts the Dalai Lama’s Karmapa choice and that is while Dalai Lama is alive. When Dalai Lama is no more, Karmapa’s power base will be gone. Whether Tibetans accept the current Panchen as the real one or not does not matter because it does not matter for which is the real Karmapa either.

The Sakyas, other Kagyus and Nyingmas may be friendly with both Karmapas does not mean they don’t have their own leaders within their sects. When the Dalai Lama is gone, the other sects will not ask or accept Karmapa to be the head because there is no tradition of it and they have their own leaders. The lay populace had enough of lama king leaders. They will have to fall into a democracy or die. But then, they don’t have a country to rule anyway.

The Kagyupas are not getting along either. Drukchen Rinpoche head of Drukchen Kagyu has written a strong letter and recorded a outspoken video to Karmapa to stop taking over his monasteries: http://www.dorjeshugden.com/all-articles/the-controversy/cta-and-the-kagyus/

There has been jealousy and in house fighting among the Sakyas to boot. Although worded nicely, the current Sakya Trizin is getting all the money, perks and fame and the rest do not want to wait till he dies to take over and be the new Sakya Trizin. So now they have made what was once a life long term of office as Sakya Trizin as three year terms. Read Sakya Trizin’s letter carefully. It sounds like he is fighting back some negative jealous talk. Sounds like fighting for a public office within the Sakyas now. I’ve included the letters. Read their letters:

          http://tibet.net/2015/01/official-announcement-concerning-the-future-role-of-the-sakya-trizin-the-head-of-the-sakya-order-of-tibetan-buddhism/

It is interesting to see on page two of Sakya Trizin’s letter he wrote, “it may be possible that at times I, as Sakya Trizin, have been seen to have benefited from privileges.” Obviously he wrote that in to silence the Sakya people’s voices who have a right to sit on his throne and get all the privileges. And they see him as taking all the benefits. Jealousy.

No one especially the Gelugs will fall under the ‘rule’ of a Karmapa for sure.

Thanks Denny for the education. On a side note, Rinpoche given his biological background and previous incarnations, can potentially assume a seat in China’s National People Congress. What’s lacking is having a strong personal influence over Tibetan communities. Anyway that’s a discussion for another topic. 🙂

Okay, this is the third and final post to reply Denny. 🙂 In my opinion, both Karmapas are genuine, though, with all due respect, I will shift most of bets to HH Thaye Dorje. Is it possible to have more than one Karmapa? Yes! Just look at the reincarnations of the 3rd Jamgon Kongtrul. There are two major 4th Jargon Kongtrul. Both of them recognised by the two different 17th Karmapas. Most interestingly, HHDL recognised both! 🙂 I have many things to say. But I think this will make the forum unnecessarily complicated to follow.

It is very common to see leaders of governments, wherever they may be, abuse the power handed to them by their people. Whether these leaders are elected democratically or otherwise, many act on fulfilling their ego, power and status, at the expense of the welfare of their people. Sadly for some they even use religion as a mask to further manipulate the people’s minds to keep themselves in power; they gloat on this in fact and continues to act the same way over and over again; hence why repeated cases of abuse as can be clearly seen from the discrimination of Dorje Shugden and the battle of the 2 Karmapas !! To witness this ongoing phenomena is heart breaking and draining !!
Thank you Rinpoche and the writers who did such an excellent piece of writing that clearly(also sadly) shows us how both the Karmapas and Dorje Shugden practitioners are victims of a leadership that is unethical and inhumane !! May the Karmapas and Shugdenites have the guidance and blessings of wise and compassionate High Lamas who do their utmost best to preserve the lineage for the benefit of many beings.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this letter and also a very well written article on the interference of politic into religion matter in Tibet in simple and easy to understand manner.

It is very clear that CTA which is a political (and secular) body interferes the religious matter. They are using their power to control and conquer the religion for their own agenda. The CTA unscruplous actions are very clear, ‘divide and conquer’. This has resulted into the split of Karma Kagyu lineage which is not necessary. As such, Tibetan leadership is not practising what they have been preaching as a democratic country. In the letter written by Lodreu Rinpoche, it shows clear ban and discrimination to Trinley Thaye Dorje. Why such segregation when everyone has religious freedom?

The same goes to Dorje Shugden practioners where Tibetan leaders enforce and legalise the ban on them.

I hope more people will stand up to fight for this unfair treatment and that this issue will be resolved very soon.

It’s sad to see when spiritual matter being intercept or interfere with political reason. In this case from this post we can see obviously how Tibetan leadership intervene in the selection of the 17th Karmapa which totally against the traditional way of selection.

Why should the Tibetan leadership be involve in the spiritual matter that has been carried down from generation to generation and has been followed devotedly and harmoniously? For a very obvious reason is to take control of this lineage practitioner by creating the spilt. The ban of Dorje Shugden practice and the selection the 17th Karma is a clear example of the political intervention by the Tibeten leadership.

I cannot see any advantages from the Tibetan leadership action of creating all these segregation, ban, discrimination on their people’s spiritual belief. I can only see the suffering of the practitioners and obviously weaken their strength and diluting their power of unity. With this how they want to hold strong for their country freedom? Illogical act as a country leader.

Tibetan have lost their country and their leaders now is just vanishing what that have left. It’s so sad.

I wish and pray for more leaders not just the spiritual leaders but the leader of democracy countries to speak up and support the freedom of religious and strongly object such action from Tibetan leaders creating more damages for their people directly and indirectly.

This article has shed some light on the issue, it’s neither the Karmapa nor the Dorje Shugden issue, it’s the way the Tibetan leadership functions. They are extremely biased and undemocratic, whoever that fits into their anti-Dalai Lama category, they will do whatever they can to eliminate or bring harm to the person.

This is a well-known fact, this is how the Central Tibetan Administration operates. The way they do things is very primative and barbaric, once you’ve become the enemy, you will always be labelled or seen as the enemy. This is why they have a hit-list on their website, indirectly they are telling the people not to mess with them or they will inflict harm on the opposers. They can never make it as a democratic leadership.

The Karmapa and Dorje Shugden are just some examples of Tibetans leadership mixing politics and polluting religious practices with their corrupted worldly affairs. I hope that this issue will bring attention to many people who have dedicated their lives to fight for the freedom of others. This is not just a minor religious matter, it affects millions of practitioners around the world.

Very powerful letter written from H.E. Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to HHDL, and explanations from Rinpoche. After reading this article, it is without a doubt that the Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism have suffered tremendously in relative silence, and this letter is the product of all those years of putting up with the Tibetan Leadership’s nonsense. If they’re a government, then they should not get involved with religious activities that the Lamas carry out, nor should they take sides in any way as that would marginalize a group of Tibetans.

In recent years we have seen more and more people questioning the CTA’s actions. We have seen H.H. the 12th Gyalwang Drugpa issuing letters to stop the force conversions of his monasteries, and now we see Lodreu Rinpoche’s letter. Just as what Rinpoche wrote above, I do wonder how the CTA would react to Lodreu Rinpoche’s letter. But what I do know for sure, if Rinpoche was the one who wrote such a daring letter, then there will be no ending to the abuse that Rinpoche will receive. (https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/will-the-dalai-lama-agree-with-this.html)

I truly empathize H.H. Karmapa Thaye Dorje’s students, as I know how it feels to see your Guru, who have done nothing wrong subjected to so much abuse. So many lamas that focus solely in learning and teaching the Dharma have to meet with so much obstacles due to the ban on Dorje Shugden or other situations similar to it. It’s just like what I’ve heard people say about Dharamsala: “If you’re a virtuous person, you will never survive in Dharamsala because you will be of no use to their political agenda”. Unfortunately… that’s a truly sad situation, for the leader of a society that are viewed as inhabitants of Shangrila to turn out so rotten.

Hopefully this letter will bring much attention that would be influential enough to identify the deceptions and oppression of the CTA towards the religious freedom of the Kagyupas and Shugden practitioners.

  61. Carmen Koo on May 8, 2016 at 2:38 am

Thank you Rinpoche for bringing light to the letter of Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche as well as the analysis presented by Rinpoche with great insight as to the source of the discrimination suffered by both parties; the Karma Kagyus as well as Dorje Shugden Practitioners.

It is seen that the source of bias and unjust treatment felt and received by lamas, teachers, Rinpoches, practitioners of different schools of Tibetan Buddhism is alike and no different, and clearly points to the Tibetan Leadership and His Holiness for not conducting their duties fairly nor extending the support, help, care, love, teachings etc to all Tibetans instead of just towards a group of them. And since they are the root cause of it, the ability to undo all the damage also lies in their hands.

The letter from Lodreu Rinpoche is powerful, for it highlights the same difficulties faced by Dorje Shugden Practitioners like ourselves, when all we (whether His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje, or a Dorje Shugden lama like Tsem Rinpoche) do is to peacefully promote and spread our lineage of Buddhism to those who are ready to accept it, and serving our gurus dutifully, carrying out their instructions to heart. There is nothing wrong with that, but we are being condemned, right under the noses of the Tibetan Leadership, because we sway away from what they endorse and enforce based on their judgements.

Just like how His Holiness endorses the other Karmapa, His Holiness Orgyen Trinley Dorje by taking photos with him, it strikes me to ponder when His Holiness Dalai Lama visits Sera Monastery (for instance recently in December 2015), why didn’t His Holiness visit Serpom Monastery too, since:

    1. It is nearby

    2. Both monasteries are of the same lineage, so by giving support and seeing what the monastery does, it helps the lineage further as more practice the Dharma

Yes Serpom monastery propagates the lineage of Dorje Shugden, but if the Tibetan Administration and His Holiness claims that there is “no ban” but just an advise to not practice Shugden, why make such a strong stance and not even step foot in Serpom Monastery at all, or for the matter a fact, any monasteries practising Dorje Shugden? Why not take photos with Dorje Shugden lamas? Since it is just advise, there shouldn’t be a problem, if people chose to do otherwise.

But the truth is that it is a problem, because it is more than just advise. Why hasn’t the violence against Shugden practitioners been addressed, and as the Tibetan Administration, would you address it if it was anti-shugden practitioners who were voicing their unfair treatment instead?

Knowing the backlash that comes with it, lamas like Lodreu Rinpoche and my teacher, Tsem Rinpoche are amazingly compassionate, kind and courageous, to speak up and stand up for something they both strongly believe in – this case, religious freedom.

Thank you Rinpoche for this post. It is extremely easy to understand. It is not about the issue on the ban of Dorje Shugden or which Karmapa is the true Karmapa. But it is the fact that the Tibetan government constantly interferes with the religious matters of different Buddhist sectors. It shows how much destruction that the CTA has done so for both the Gelug and Karma Kagyus. With this, it shows that all Tibetans do not have religious freedom and they are not able to follow the constitutions that they have passed.

With this, it shows that the CTA does not have any integrity with the rules that they have set for themselves. What they care about is only the political power that they will receive. It is sad to see this as it shows that they do not care about what happens for their people and also how Buddhism will be. They only care about what is going on for their power to get more benefits from there.

It is very upsetting to hear the news that people were stopped from attending H.H. Trinley Thaye Dorje classes because it is a way that the CTA is doing and have done to stop the spread of Dharma. The worst part is that they use H.H. the Dalai Lama’s name to do so. If the whole purpose is to stop the practice of Buddhism, then why should H.H. the Dalai Lama travel around the world giving teachings?

  63. Pastor Niral Patel on May 7, 2016 at 11:20 pm

This post is very good to understand, not just about the Karmapa issue but about the Dorje Shugden issue. Here we see two different examples of how the Tibetan leadership is interfering in the religious lives of Buddhists, not only amongst the Tibetans in exile but non-Tibetan Buddhists from all over the world. But this interference has led to both a lack of religious freedom and human rights issues.

Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s tenacity in writing such a letter and then openly displaying the fact that he did so is testament to his faith and strong feelings regarding allowing Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje to be able to disseminate the Dharma in freedom, without fear and possible persecution.

This has stark similarities with the current ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden, implemented as a method to further fragment an already sparse Tibetan population in exile. In both cases, we can clearly see that the Tibetan leadership is inciting its supporters to violence, vulgarity and the active suppression of a truly virtuous and beneficial activity – the practice and preservation of the Dharma.

  64. Pastor David Lai on May 7, 2016 at 10:05 pm

Finally, someone else besides Shugden lamas and practitioners speak up against the Tibetan leadership for injustices. I think it is a pretty direct letter from this Karma Kagyu rinpoche about the problems with the in-fighting going on within their Karma Kagyu tradition due to the interference of the Tibetan leadership. I really like the chart that shows the parallels or similarities between the Karma Kagyu and Dorje Shugden practitioners. It’s incredible how the CTA has continue to operate under medieval methods of control here.

I think CTA really has got to do something drastic to repair all the damages done not just to the Karma Kagyu and Dorje Shugden people but to so many inherent issues they have. The problem about the Tibetans is the refusal for anybody to own up to mistakes and therefore, nobody really learn from their mistakes and the continue to perpetuate problems and issues like these. This may have been fine in the old days of Tibet but the problem is the fact that we live in the 21st century of Internet, social media, whatsapp and Wechat. Information spread fast and its very hard to cover up because people are always watching.

I do hope more people will read (especially important people who can make a different) and understand the inherent problems within the Tibetan leadership’s governance. I hope more and more positive pressure will build up in the CTA so they will relinquish the ban on Dorje Shugden and make right whatever problems of their interference within the Karma Kagyu’s issue with the 2 Karmapas.

  65. Pastor Adeline on May 7, 2016 at 5:04 pm

What we see here very obviously is the religious freedom that is rightfully ours been taken away by the Tibetan leadership who has failed to practice true democracy. Much financial support has been given to the Tibetan leadership in the past 60 years in order for them to form a truly democratic government, yet we see they use the financial aids to run campaigns that further segregate the already small amount of Tibetans in exile and the 4 million in the world.

The Tibetan leadership that is supposed to be secular has no shown no hesitation in intervening the spiritual matters in the name of His Holiness blatantly while enjoying the sum kindly donated all around the world. Just for your information, United States alone has pumped in more than USD20 million to the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in good faith. Yet, the CTA disappoints the donor(s) by failing again and again with their selfish interest.

The Karma-Kagyu has its long history of Karmapa recognising himself through the Sharmapa by giving a letter before entering clear light each life. This has been the tradition and has been like this until His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama decided to get involve with the process and recognising another Karmapa chosen by Tai Situ Rinpoche.

We know that throughout the history, it has always been the Shamarpa who recognise the Karmapa while the Karmapa himself also recognise the Shamarpa. This relationship is similar to that of the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama, who took turns to recognise each other. These systems have been setup for centuries according to tradition and have been working perfectly until an external party step in.

Whether there exist any altruistic intentions that are way surpassed our capabilities to recognise or not, the truth to us is the religious freedom that is rightfully ours have been taken away forcefully. This is not something we should expect from His Holiness who advocates religious freedom, loving-kindness and compassion for sure.

It is really refreshing and a relief to know that there are holy lamas who would stand up for the religious freedom of all Buddhist practitioners. Personally I thank HE the 25th Tsem Rinpoche and HE Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for their courage to speak the truth to salvage the division in both the Gelug and Karma Kagyu traditions.

It is the courage of these two High Lamas who request for religious freedom for all Buddhist and their acceptance of any repercussions as stated clearly by HE the 25th Tsem Rinpoche, that I most admire and grateful for.

It is with great respect and eloquence that these two High Lamas have made requests to the Dalai Lama and not use physical attacks as exercised by the oppositions that also shows a marked difference in their approach in the democratic world of the 21st century.

With great humility, I fold my hands in gratitude for voices who speak the truth on these 2 world renowned issues.

  67. Pastor Yek Yee(月谊讲法师) on May 7, 2016 at 3:35 pm

Before I am take refuge become a Buddhist practitioner, I too heard some kind of gossip about two Kamapa existed. I didn’t pay attention into this issue because from my own opinions it is not so important to me and I don’t think so got any harm from this issue. Until I read through H.E.The 25th Tsem Rinpoche’s blog post “Karma Kagyu’s Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche asks the Dalai Lama for Religious Freedom”, now I have full picture of this issue. Indeed I feel sad and uncomfortable deeply the division of the Karma Kagyu tradition because interference’s of politics.

The letter written by Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche who is the General Secretary to His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje. In his letter, Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche used the evident to prove what is going on…very direct, not flowery words, and a lot facts. As a Dorje Shugden practitioner whatever His Holiness Trinley Thaye Dorje and Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche was experienced, I didn’t surprised because it is Tibetan leaders used to treat towards whoever not follow their “instruction”. The first I thought this kind of condition quite serious to Dorje Shugden Lamas or practitioner, however when I read the letter written by Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, the Tibetan Leader treated all lineage tradition is same while they found out you have different view or opinions towards what Dalai Lama said.

Then I can bravely comment that the Tibetan leader want to control all Tibetan Buddhism lineages by divided them. This is very similar they done towards Shugden practitioner. Violence, threaten, hard words, unfair, twisted the fact and lying to public…that is how Tibetan leader treated his own community.

As a normal Buddhist practitioner, I don’t have any qualification to justice what HH Dalai Lama is doing but I too observed that the Tibetan government misleading many people from Tibetan community and the public by using HH Dalai Lama’s name to get the selfish result they wants. It is confuse me as a practitioner because whatever the student of HHDL response to the group, or people who not follow their way, will be ban or boycott. It is contradict what HHDL’s teaching?

I think it is good for HHDL can share with us, what is His Holiness towards the damage done by your students? It is not good the disharmony and split happened again and again among Tibetan community! And for time to time the faith towards Buddha Shakyamuni’s teaching will breaking and dropping. I believed that all of us don’t want it happen….!
Last, I would like to say thank you to H.E.The 25th Tsem Rinpoche and Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche fighting the religion freedom for all Buddhist practitioner like us.
    Sincerely Pastor Yek Yee

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for this eye-opening comparison between the socio politico religious situation in the Karma Kagyu tradition and the Gelugpa tradition.

I find that in both cases, there is a big confusion regarding the role HH Dalai Lama carries out – temporal, spiritual, both or neither?

We know HH Dalai Lama has given up his temporal leadership role to the position of Sikyong.

We also know that spiritually, HH Dalai Lama has never been involved in the enthronement of a new Karmapa as this article clearly articulates.

We too know that in the Gelugpa tradition, the spiritual/monastic head is the Ganden Tripa, not HH Dalai Lama.

So to me, when Tai Situ Rinpoche latches on to HH Dalai Lama to bring legitimacy to his Karmapa candidate, it is wrong.

When HH Dalai Lama unilaterally bans the Dorje Shugden practice without deep consultations with all the Gelug senior Lamas including the Ganden Tripa,it is also wrong.

When the Sikyong and the CTA uses spirituality to divide and conquer, to remain in power whilst the Tibetan community suffer, it is also very wrong.

So to me, HH Dalai Lama cannot be categorised in any way. He is Chenrezig manifesting all these situations to bring about a stronger, purer, better, higher, wider, sense of the Buddhadharma.

To those who have been caught, one way or other, in these situations, I would like them to think clearly for a moment about the facts, and if I may humbly suggest, apply the four opponent power of regret, repair, not to repeat and to rely on the Three Jewels.

    With folded hands.

  69. JP on May 7, 2016 at 12:41 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

Thank you for the article. It’s very clear that the Tibetan govt uses politics to divide and rule the people. They’ll use any excuse to do that at the expense of people’s wellbeing and spirituality.

Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is very compassionate to stand up for the truth and clarify with HH the Dalai Lama on what he has heard. Since HH advocates religious freedom around the world. Then HH should do the same for his own people regardless of his religious stance. Otherwise, this blatant hypocrisy will have a huge backlash on his credibility.

With the current information technology, leaders can’t hide and get away with their wrong doings. It’s just a matter of time that the truth will surface.

    Dear Rinpoche

Thank you for this article. I have read the letter by Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche and I found it shocking. I think it is very courageous of him to write an open letter like this directed to His Holiness knowing what his followers may do to him.

I think the people who have been using the Dalai Lama’s name to intimidate others should stop doing so because not only they are creating confusion among those they coerced, but also they are smearing the Dalai Lama’s name by what they are doing. If they have samaya with the Dalai Lama as they often claim, intimidating other people is the last things that they should do.

I sincerely hope that His Holiness the Dalai Lama will issue kind words to sooth the various conflicts within the Tibetan Buddhism community such as the Karmapa issue and the Dorje Shugden issue.

What a powerful strong direct letter from Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche asking the Dalai Lama for Religious Freedom and to stop all the despicable behaviours of those who uses the Dalai Lama’s name to attack those who who do not go along. This is truly sad

I like what Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche said because it is with reason and logic. I completely agree with this statement in the comparison chart that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is in the position to stop the persecution and discrimination against Karmapa Thaye Dorje as well as Dorje Shugden practitioners but has not done so despite many calls to do so. — WHY IS THIS SO?

It just brings me to question more and have more doubts and even wrong view of the Dalai Lama. I do not mean too, but not everyone is going to let it fly as a “divine play” all the time when there is so much schism, disharmony and discrimination caused, on top of that blood shed.

In all honesty if it is not for Tsem Rinpoche who keeps on advising us to always respect His Holiness and never ever say anything negative about Him and disrespect Him and that what enlightened beings do are sometimes beyond our concept of understanding now, if it wasn’t for such constant advice, I would have lost all respect to His Holiness. I’d probably feel jaded and if I was a new Buddhist, I would renounce this religion all together. I cannot believe there is so much power games and political agenda from the Dalai Lama’s office. It is quite embarrassing these days because with the how long can you fake it? How long can you fake compassion, wisdom, and democracy!

This is TRUE to the core… the Tibetan leadership did not have the authority to impose the ban on Dorje Shugden. The Tibetan leadership did not have the authority to interfere with the affairs of the Karma Kagyus. Real democratic government would never take away their own people’s religious right and create factions and hatred amongst brothers and sisters. You can STOP talking about how bad China is in robbing and killing your people, because it is ‘pot calling the kettle black” cos you are doing exactly that and it is even more shameful because your killing your own people. This is how civil war starts.

I don’t mean disrespect but seriously WHY Your Holiness Dalai Lama, why won’t YOU say something to STOP all this barbaric behaviours, the disharmony and disunity mess that I’m sorry, was what Your Holiness created in the first place? —That is the billion dollar question here!

These writing letters to the Dalai Lama.. asking the Dalai Lama for Religious Freedom. we all know the Dalai Lama and CTA will not respond very obvious same they are doing happened to the Dorje Shugden people never respond.. for some one like Karma Kagyu’s Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche to write this letter, it was not easy but everyone has their limit enough is enough.. I hope this CTA do something otherwise later or soon there will be no CTA.. U what that’s why China does’t want to negotiate have talk with CTA because they have two faces..

  73. Pastor Elena Khong Jean Ai on May 7, 2016 at 7:12 am

It is incredible the CTA has lasted this long, you have to give them that, because they’ve attacked, weakened and divided just about every sector of their society. I can’t imagine why Tibetans haven’t woken up yet to the truth about their leadership.

With the Gelugs, as Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche points out, it’s the Dorje Shugden issue. Are the CTA and their rabid band of followers going to step in and claim that Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche is sectarian for saying that:

    (a) the Dalai Lama should stay out of Karma Kagyu affairs

    (b) that Dorje Shugden is a Gelug issue, and Kagyus should have no part to play in it?

To be honest, I RESPECT Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for saying Kagyus should stay out of the Dorje Shugden issue. And he’s right – it IS a Gelug issue and I definitely don’t think it’s sectarian to say so. It’s just recognition that Shugden practice is most popular with the Gelugs, just like how Tsongkhapa is strongest with Gelugs too.

How is it sectarian just to rely on Tsongkhapa? How come it’s not sectarian for the Nyingmas to rely on Guru Rinpoche, and no one else?

What IS sectarian is when lamas from other sects get involved and interfere with affairs that are, no offence, none of their business. So perhaps it’s time for lamas of other traditions to stop passing remarks about a Gelug practice.

And using that logic, it’s time for His Holiness the Dalai Lama to stop getting involved with Kagyu affairs. He is no longer the overall leader of the Tibetan government and therefore lacks the legal authority to influence or make decisions. He’s not the spiritual head of the other sects / traditions either, so he lacks the spiritual authority to influence decisions for other traditions.

Like Rinpoche, I respect Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche for speaking up because this letter is going to get him into a lot of trouble with the Tibetan leadership and yet he still did it anyway. First off, it embarrasses the Dalai Lama which is not going to win any brownie points with Dharamsala for the Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje (if that is indeed what his people are trying to do, which is get closer to Dharamsala). Second, it puts Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche at risk of being attacked or harmed for his remarks.

I hope the Tibetan leadership see from this that they can’t keep hurting their people over and over again, and not have anything come of it. In old Tibet maybe it was possible because the Tibetans didn’t have any other options, being isolated from the world. But in this day and age, with the Tibetan diaspora all over the planet, and with so many options available to Tibetans, it’s time their leadership changes their method of governance for steering their people. Otherwise people will speak up and as we have seen with Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche, already people are starting to.

  74. Marissa on May 7, 2016 at 3:57 am

For the longest time, a lot of people believed the untruths told about Dorje Shugden because how the government of His Holiness the Dalai Lama be wrong, ya? I too believed what the Dalai Lama ‘advised’ about Shukden until I started reading Tsem Tulku’s posts about the subject which are unsurpassed arguments based on logic.

Tsem’s writings about the Citamani Tara got me wondering how the same great adepts can be right about everything else including the Lamrim and yidam practices and yet, wrong about something as basic as a protector practice. I may not know as much Dharma and scriptures as most but when I read something to clear and simple, I see the falsities in what the Dalai Lama has been telling everyone.

And now with this post, I see that the Dalai Lama is in fact, very skilled at manipulation and the art of diversion. Geluks have been focussing on the Shukden issue and Kagyus engrossed in their own Karmapa controversy and yet when you line them up side by side as this post does, then the Dalai’s tactic is exposed.

I think many people have been fooled because they held the opinion that the Dalai Lama knows best but as the Buddha counselled, we must check everything we hear against logic. And what I read here is logical.

    • Dharamsala Geek on May 7, 2016 at 5:11 am

      Marissa,

I like what you posted. After you mentioning Tsem Rinpoche’s blog has a post on Tara, I went ahead and read it. Very eye-opening yet logical. I recommend everyone to read it: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/cittamani-tara.html

I can see the similarities in Tsem Rinpoche and Lodreu Rabsel Rinpoche’s stance to share the truth. They both are very brave for the issues they are challenging their Tibetan leadership. To challenge leadership in Tibetan society is a big no-no. They put themselves in danger in doing so because Tibetan society is not democratic and their leaders in exile are very dangerous and harmful contrary to their portrayal. They will do what they can to tarnish your reputation and more if you don’t fall in line. Not to mention the minions of Dalai Lama supporters both Tibetan and non-Tibetan who will attack both these lamas to defame them online constantly. Tsem Rinpoche has been systematically attacked my CTA sponsored people to defame him but he refuses to be silenced. Brave, honest and truthful.

Dharamsala’s Tibetan leadership pays people like Tenzin Paljor (German ‘monk’) and Carol McQuire who runs a sad FB page claiming to be a survivor of NKT to defame people they don’t like. Carol encourages many defamatory statements on this FB page that has NOTHING to do with NKT. She encourages any defamation of people she has not met and just because they practice Dorje Shugden. Dangerous for her. Carol and Paljor being non-Tibetan hopefully would reach a wider audience so the Tibetan leadership thinks. Sadly it has not been the case.

Yes you said it “when you line them up side by side as this post does, then the Dalai’s tactic is exposed.”

We would never know this if someone experienced tells us and give us this knowledge. I agree with you totally that it is because of Tsem Rinpoche we are able to grasp more clearly instead of being more confuse at the whole situation. And you know what is the best part is, knowing the truth is liberating and knowing that even after all these horrible power games which is very much worldly, yet Dorje Shugden Lamas and Dorje Shugden never once ask us to strike by with hatred and vengeance. Never once did they ask us to beat them down instead we are asked to show more grace, more forgiveness, more compassion. Just go here to listen to Dorje Shugden’s own advice… https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/the-farm-of-your-mind.html

From here you will know that Dorje Shugden is no ordinary protector and you’ll know His soul purpose and heart which is to help all sentient beings. Thank you Marissa you comments inspire us to do more and to bring the ban down.

Dalai Lama should really stop messing with other sects’ affairs, he tried to be the king who unite all sects but failed miserably, and in the process using Dorje Shugden as scapegoat. Look at the mess Dalai Lama and his government in exile (CTA) created. First in the Dorje Shugden issue, now in the Karmapa issue, all dirty tricks. These people took donations from the innocent people and abused the money for power and politics. The truth is now being exposed and Dalai Lama and his lame CTA officials need to face the music now.

The concept of rebirth has a long association with Buddhism. Rebirth in Buddhism refers to the teaching that the actions of a sentient being lead to a new existence after death, in an endless cycle called saṃsāra. One will begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. What they are reborn as depends on their actions in their previous life rather kamma. As a Buddhist we should believe in rebirth but still many people don’t . Buddha taught us that choices of rebirth make a difference and can shape many lifetimes. Buddhists believe that nothing that exists is permanent and everything will ultimately cease to be. There is a belief in rebirth

Against the odds two inspiring nuns fought all the way to become ordained, fighting for their rights to practice Buddhism . Interesting read of how they went through , bringing equality for women in Thailand. Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand. Officially, only men can become monks and novices in Thailand under a Buddhist order. The country does not recognize female monks or novices. In recent years, more Thai Buddhist women seeking to become full-fledged female monks, have been defying the tradition getting ordained overseas, in Sri Lanka or India. Buddhist women have been fighting for years for equality and social acceptance in Thailand. They just can’t be ordained by Thai monks. Ven. Dhammananda, 68 year old former university lecturer and activist became Thailand’s first Theravadin bhikkhuni after going the odds. Inspiring read biography on Ven. Dhammananda and Ven. Dr. Lee. They had gone through great hardships, discrimination and against the many odds in bringing equality to women in Buddhism in Thailand.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great inspiration post.

The unseen things are spiritual realities that are eternal and invisible to our physical eye. There are many forces and phenomena that are not visible to the naked eye. There are many things that humans cannot see yet there are some could see. For what is can be seen is only. Things do exist even we can’t see, believing their existence is our choice. Things that we can’t see in the world opens up a curiosity and exploration by some. Whether through scientific inquiry, or spiritual exploration, the pursuit of knowledge about the unseen can lead to profound insights about ourselves and the universe.
Malacca City is the historic capital of the coastal state of Malacca, in Malaysia serving as a link between east and west for over 500 years. Famous for breath-taking sights with rich heritage, ancient dark culture and history with many old centuries buildings with an interesting past and a colourful ghost story. For that reason alone it is worth visiting as is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its well-preserved historical center. There’s many historical mansions been passed down generation to generations and with many ghostly sighting by the locals and visitors. There’s the reason many unseen beings loitering and attached to these places. Such an interesting and incredibly creepy watching the video in this blog host by Li Kim. Li Kim had done a great work all along with her team to share with readers about our historic Malacca .
Thank you Rinpoche and Li Kim for this sharing.

Vajrayogini symbolizes the wisdom of all enlightened beings and embodies the impulse of inspiration that drives the Buddhas to attain the perfect enlightenment. Vajrayogini is one of the most effective practices for people today. We can make offerings such as gold or jewel offerings and so on. The offering of gold helps us to collect merits, spiritual attainments, gain a deeper connection to Vajrayogini. It also creates the causes to attain a Buddha’s body.
Make Offerings to Vajrayogini in Kechara Forest Retreat at Bentong is such an meritorious way for us to collect merits. All thanks to our Guru having conceptualised the idea of having a statue of Vajrayogini for everyone . Recitation of Vajrayogini mantra can be a powerful tool for self-transformation, healing and liberation from samsara.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing with details explanation .

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this insightful article. Life is short, and if we enjoy every moment of every day, then we will be happy no matter what happens or what changes along the way. What ever matter to us at the time of death is nothing. In the end, it’s not the years in our life that count it’s what you leave behind that matters. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again.Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. Learning Dharma and practicing dharma is the our choice that’s matter. Some of the key points to take notes, read, study the Lam Rim and apply it, engage in Sadhana daily and consistently. No one will help us at the moment of death but ourselves. Spiritual practicing is the best choice.

Well the size of Buddha statues in Tibetan Buddhism is important because it represents the Buddha’s immense ability and vast knowledge. Hence the Buddha statues hold the symbol of satisfaction within, peace and happiness. They are a symbol of inspiration for every human being. When we focus on the Buddha statues, it gives us inner peace that our mind, our heart and our soul gets enlightened.
We have are so fortunate seeing and circumambulating where the 9-foot Dorje Shugden statue and with 500 mantra stones engraved with Dorje Shugden’s sacred mantra. As Rinpoche had said before the bigger and more Buddha statues helps in planting seeds of enlightenment in people’s mind-streams. It also help us to generate as much merit and purify as much karma as possible. Merely by seeing all those big statues at Kechara Forest Retreat is a blessing.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

The 4th Tagpu Pemavajra Jampel Tenpai Ngodrub, most commonly known as Tagpu Dorje Chang, was a highly accomplished yogi Highly attained lama who had many authentic visions of the Buddhas and even travel astrally to receive direct teachings from them. His recognised line of incarnations stem all the way back to the 14th Century. He is generally regarded as such amongst Gelug lineage holders. He spent most of his time in a hermitage located above Sera Monastery, gave teachings and transmitted many vital practices and lineages to his foremost student Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche. Besides receiving the complete instructions of Dorje Shugden’s practice, Tagpu Dorje Chang had many other mystical experiences throughout his lifetime. Interesting read biography of a highly accomplished mahasiddha lama.

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.
He was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia years back giving an enthralling Dhamma talk on the timeless teachings of Ajahn Chah.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
