Question asked by Tan

Dear Pastors,

What is the probability that a person is enlightened, but he is not a buddhist. If we accidentally generate rude thoughts, or disrespect thoughts, and very unpleasant thoughts towards them, how bad is the karma? How many merits we destroyed by this thought. If we immediately regret after the thought arises, will it cancel the effect?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Tan,

Since we do not know whether a person is enlightened or not, it is always better to refrain from having negative thoughts about him/her regardless of whether he/she is Buddhist or not. How heavy the karma is depends on the thought itself. But we must not forget that any karma created, however small, will multiply with time. Thus it is important to purify the negative karma by applying the four opponent powers: regret, refuge, remedy and resolve. Yes, it is advisable to immediately regret the action, promise not to do it again, take refuge in the Three Jewels and apply the antidote (remedy) which is to think of the qualities of others, their kindness, etc and not their faults.

Question asked by Kev

Dear Pastor Adeline,

Wow, thanks alot for all the info!
Quite a mouthful there. ^___^

I just quickly opened up all the links you've sent me,
quite a number of which I've already viewed before or read.

Its ok, I will refresh again.

Questions:

Besides the online store you've directed me to get the book materials,
all of that I assume is not in Kechara outlets or in the library?
(Suggest to have it in library as these are hard to find books?)
1. Can I share it with you or get it 2nd hand from you or from other Pastors instead of buying?
The only book I'll buy is The Lamrin.
I'm a voracious reader. And most of the books I can finish in 1-2days maximum per book.

2. Can the submission of request sent by email care@kechara.com or formally written?
What should I include in the content?
Like my photo, full name, birth date, time…etc…for divinition? cause H.E. Rinpoche don't know me?

3. For the submission of records of preliminary numbers is through care@kechara.com too?
Everything by email can?

4. I think the best way to do this is to go to the Gompa or approach the Seniors/Pastors/Sangha for step by step instructions.

Thanks Adeline,
I've to study all the links you sent me!

I hope to come back real soon!
…it might be soon like this week perhaps….Songkran's this sunday. lol…

Warmest Regards,

Kev

    Dear Kev,

    1. Since you’ve said that you’re in Thailand, so I’ve provided info for you to get a copy of those books from there. If you’re in Malaysia, you might like to borrow from the library. Keeping these useful books are important as we will need to refer back to them continuously on our path. Reading once or twice might not be enough for us to grasp the meaning. Those books were available in the outlet, but they’re all sold out.

    2. Request has to be done sincerely and with effort, as it shows where your mind is and how much you really want to practice. It would be good to give a background of who you are, why you request for these teachings. It is not necessary to include your birth date or time and there is no divination involve.

    3. Submission of updates normally presented with offerings. It is important to continue to make offerings to the Guru because you have dharma because of him. You are not required to submit your numbers daily, but every quarter or so, depending on you. The last time we did prostration retreat, we update Rinpoche every quarter with offerings that we make daily. Yes, everyday we make offerings to the Guru to continue to generate merits for us to learn and practice the dharma as we purify our negative karmas.

    4. Yes, that would be the best way to do it.

Thank you and all the best!

Question asked by Rt

Is the pure mind of ours and the mind of others is the same so do the afflictive mind? Is ego and ignorance is the same in buddism? Hence if to know others if to know oneself and to know one self is to know one others?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Rt,

By “pure mind of ours” I think you mean the “Buddha nature”. Buddha nature is the pure nature of the mind of sentient beings which symbolizes one’s potential to realize Buddhahood. The problem is, there are factors that obscure our Buddha nature. These are the two obscurations: obscuration to liberation and obscuration to omniscience. The former are obscurations of defilements (afflictive emotions arising from the three poisons – desire, anger and ignorance). The latter are obscurations of knowledge (wrong view such as seeing the world through the veil of duality), that prevent us from achieving omniscient knowledge (the understanding of emptiness) and therefore, full enlightenment.

Ignorance and ego are different but related. Ignorance is one of the three poisons (or root delusions). The ego or ego-mind is the wrong conception that one is self-existent (or inherently existent). This is due to the ignorance of the nature of the mind and self.

I guess you can say that knowing oneself, one knows others and vice versa, but you must know the profound meaning of this statement. The Buddha said that “Through one all are known, through one all are also seen.” According to H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, “By knowing the mind through practice, everything is liberated”.

I hope this explanation has been helpful.

Question asked by Kev

Dear Pastor Adeline,

Thank you very much for your reply.
I appreciate it.
I've bought the Lamrin Book. But I gave it away to somebody in Bangkok. I'm currently there for 1 year already.
Will be coming back to KL soon.

But those mentioned below:
-Wheel of Sharp Weapons,
– Bodhisattvacha-avatara by Shantideva,
– Lojong, –
50 Verses of Guru Devotion by Ashvagoshabefore

1. Are those above books?
Can I read them online or video…where can I get them?

I read somewhere along the blog the preliminaries are 100,000 x …
2. Can you lists down all the preliminaries I need to do please?

After I've done all the above, who should I tell to proceed with the next step?
Do I need to record everything officially and hand it over to somebody stating that I've completed it?

Thanks,

Kev

    Dear Kev,

Looking forward to your return to Malaysia! Meantime, you can order a copy of the Lamrim we use in Kechara – Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand by Pabongkha Rinpoche here http://vajrasecrets.com/books/english-books/lamrim-liberation-in-the-palm-of-your-hand.html.

As for the rest, please try Boarders, MPH or Kinokuniya bookstores. Alternatively, you can order them online through Amazon or any other online bookstores like http://www.shambhala.com/.

For Lojong, the root text is Eight Verses of Training the Mind by Geshe Langri Tangpa and you might want to get a commentary like Transforming the Mind (Thorsons, 2000) or Kindness, Clarity and Insight (Snow Lion, 2006) by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for more detailed learning.

Same goes to Bodhisattvacharyāvatāra and 50 verses of Guru Devotion. Please read together with commentaries to ease your understanding. The former can pair with A Flash of Lightning in the Dark of Night: A Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life (Shambhala, 1994) by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the later one can pair with Dangerous Friend: The Teacher-Student Relationship in Vajrayana Buddhism (Shambhala, 2001) by Rig ‘dzin Dorje.

Each preliminary practice is 100,000 times plus 10 % 10,000 that is used to make up the numbers we might have miscounted along the way. So total for each preliminary practice is 110,000. The preliminaries practice are:

I suggest you to submit a formal requested with offerings to His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche to request for his blessings before you embark on your preliminaries practices. Reason being, when we start our preliminary practice, we are opening our negative karmas for purification, it can be very intense (imagine eons of negativities) and difficult especially when you are doing it on your own. With proper guidance and the blessings of the Guru is the only way to support your practice all the way. You can submit your formal request to His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche c/o Kechara House Buddhist Association Malaysia here:

Question asked by Kev

Hi, I’ve got a few questions I hope you can answer. 1. What preliminary things I should do in order to get Vajra Yogini initiation? 2. Since Rinpoche is in USA, should I finished all the required preliminaries, how does he give me initiation since he’s so far away? Can the pastors give initiation? 3. Can I do ALL the preliminary required at the Gompa?
For example the water offerings, mandala…etc.
My home do not have all these.
Can I just come to the Gompa to do all these everyday? 4. What’s the AVERAGE month/years to complete all these preliminaries before getting the Vajrayogini Initiation if we do it everyday.
Would like a number please… 5. I would like to know how to become a monk in Kechara? Thank you for your time. Kev

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Kev,

Please find below as per your request:
    1. We need to read up and learn Lam Rim, Wheel of Sharp Weapons, Bodhisattvacharyāvatāra by Shantideva, Lojong, 50 Verses of Guru Devotion by Ashvagoshabefore we receive Vajrayogini’s practices and complete all the preliminaries practise before we can be considered for any teachings, not only higher training like Vajrayogini. Those texts that I’ve mentioned are also applicable generally to anyone who would like to learn the dharma.
    2. This is only relevant if point 1 is fulfilled.
    3. Preliminary practices are not advised to be done in the Gompa, as you require a fixed altar set up and fixed seat for some of the practices to be done, such as water offering, Ganden Lhagyama, Vajrasattva practices. If you are serious about the practices, please set up a proper altar at home. If you need ideas and assistance, please go to http://www.kechara.com/shopping/ or http://www.vajrasecrets.com. You can also visit any of the Kechara Paradise if you reside in Malaysia.
    4. The time require for preliminaries practices to be completed vary by individual. Some takes 1 months for 1 practice to be done, some 10 years. So it is all depending on you.
    5. Are you involve in Kechara in anyway? If not, please consider to start attending the weekly pujas and dharma class as well as offering your voluntary services and then go from there.

    Hope this helps.

Question asked by Fenni

Dear Pastors,

I'm really thankful that Rinpoche shared with us the video of HH the Dalai Lama explaining the meaning of OM MANI PADME HUNG mantra. The discussion followed in the responses was also a great help to comprehend what HH Dalai Lama tried to convey, since I couldn't really follow through on the first sight. I wonder if there is also an explanation as well for Manjushri's and Lama Tsongkhapa's short mantra, OM AH RA PA TSA NA DHI?

Thank you in advance. May all wonderful works of Kechara continue to flourish.

Question asked by David E

Hello pastors! I'm back with more questions!

I'm in the rpocess of setting up an altar and wish to decorate it with pictures of Buddhas, bodhisattvas, dharma protectors, etc. I have found a couple guides online that show how to arrange the pictures according to their hierarchy (Guru, yidam, dakini, protectors, top down, right to left).

My questions are thus: in terms of altar set up, do we consider Maitreya Buddha a guru, or a yidam? If we have a picture of Shakyamuni Buddha, is he guru or yidam? If we have pictures of several gurus (HH The Dalai Lama, Lama Tsongkhapa, His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, Shakyamuni Buddha/Maitreya Buddha), which takes the top most position? Where do Bodhisattvas lie in this arrangement?

Is there a hierarchy within the groups (yidam, dakini, protectors) which must be adhered to? For instance, as Green and White Tara sprang from Chenrezig's eyes, does that make Chenrezig "superior" to Green/White Tara strictly in terms of altar set up?

If we choose to include wrathful as well as peaceful emanations, what is the arrangement for those? For isntance, I have a picture of Mahacundi Bodhisattva in her peaceful form, and her three-faced wrathful form. How should they be arranged in relation to each other?

Sorry if my questions seem all over the place, I really want to get this right. Thank you a thousand fold for your good help and advice.

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear David E,

Thank you for the good news! I can feel your excitement reading your question. You will have a very merry altar seeing how many Buddhas you’ve mentioned in your question! You might even want to consider a small altar for the protector(s).

The main focal point of your altar should be an image of a Buddha statue (tsa-tsa, photograph or painting). You can choose any Buddha statue that you like, and you can place more than one statue. The more the merrier of course :). If you are following the Gelug lineage, Lama Tsongkhapa will be in the center. If you have both Shakyamuni Buddha and Maitreya Buddha’s statues as well, Buddha Shakyamuni should be placed at the back with Maitreya Buddha and Lama Tsongkhapa right in front of Maitreya Buddha.

All Buddhas are the same, there is no superiority among them, Chenrezig, Green and White Tara are all the same. In Kechara House, we have Lama Tsongkhapa in the middle, Protector Setrap on his left and Vajrayogini on his right. So it is obvious where the Protector and Yidam should be located on the altar. The center Buddha will be higher than the Yidam and the Protector.

As you may already knew, on the left of the altar should also have a Dharma text to represent the Buddha’s speech, a stupa on the right to represent the Buddha’s mind. The Guru’s framed photo should be placed in front of the Buddha. I am not sure if His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche is your Guru or His Holiness the Dalai Lama, so you’ve to decide who to place there. Also make sure the picture will not block Lama Tsongkhapa in the center. The Guru represents both the Guru and also the Sangha. Your Guru is your closest link to the Buddhas.

As I’m unsure of the sizes of your Mahacundi Bodhisattvas pictures, as long as it doesn’t block the Guru, Yidam and Protector you can place them on right of Lama Tsongkhapa, in front of the Yidam.

Also not to forget to get at least seven water bowls in front of the Buddha in the center for water offerings. If can, another row behind them for sensory offerings. These nice clean new bowls can be made of any material – stainless steel, glass, porcelain, copper or even silver and gold. Please buy the best you can offer to practice generousity by making such good offerings to the Buddhas.

Get some incense, if possible with an incense holder to be safe, and nice scented candles. Please do not leave any candles unattended. His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche has advise electric candles as an option for indoor light offerings due to safety reasons. Here’s the blog post where His Eminence shared this information https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/me/electric-candles-as-offerings-ok.html. I recommend you to read The Living Buddha Within by His Eminence for more detailed understanding of altar setup. The book is available on http://www.vajrasecrets.com and Google books if you do not reside in Malaysia.

Hope you find these information helpful.

Question asked by T

Karma cannot be escape. So do the buddha cannot escape from karma, everybody cannot escape from karma. Hence for the beings in hell, some of the beings are torture by denizens. Do the denizens get negative karma from torturing the beings? And based on my discoverey I would like to knw that weather existence of hells are actually arises from the mind? Which means hell are a delusion it is not created by god or demon and so do the same for heaven and all realms. A cartoon type of example, if a hell being and human were friends, if a hell being invites a human to hell, the hell being are able to fell taste touch and see the torture chamber in hell, but a human who do not have the cause to be in hell will see everything black and empty when the hell being bring them to hell, is this correct? While human who have third eye can see hell ghost and all that stuff is a different story because they have gain a level where they are able to perceive directly a subtle mind where their achievement is free from negative defilement due to spiritual practice which means they can see that all manifestation and emanation of the subtle mind. Hence, like buddha they are able to help sentient being without experience any suffering meaning they are able to help beings in hell without being torture by another denizen because all phenomena that label as hell arises as a manifeststion from a deluted subtle mind where buddha are like a doctor trying to save a patient in hospital bahagia? Where this patient see everything bad as good? If my theory were right, that means six realms are actually reamless because it does not exist at all all, it exist because a deluted mind exist? Which means the self is ignorance and then ignorance manifest into three poison and manifest into84000 afflicted emotion and with the power of these afliction form six group (samsara)of being where they have the same afflicted motivation and produce a same afflicted result? Hence this y we should focus ourselves?

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear T,

I find your theories and suppositions quite disturbing.

I will not address all your queries but there are some misconceptions that I’d like to point out. First, Buddhas do not have karma. They are fully enlightened and have dispelled all obscurations.

The “denizens” who torture hell beings are experiencing the results of their own karma.

Hell can exist as a state of mind. This is the result of one’s negative karma ripening. But great Buddhist masters have mentioned that the six realms of samsara actually exist. Pabongka Rinpoche in “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand, gave a description of the exact locations of the hells and what is found in each hell.
Attained beings, Bodhisattvas, for example, are able to travel to this realm to benefit the beings there.

Do read Pabongka Rinpoche’s book “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand”. It will help you to find a lot of answers to your queries.

Question asked by jason

i recently got the 21 tara iniation . My lama when so fast when reciting all the mantras . can you guys give all 21 tara mantras. jchau@student.concordia.ab.ca

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear jason,

I have a question for you please. If you have gotten an initiation from your lama, how come you didn’t ask your lama or the organizing center to help you with the mantras? How come you’re not given necessary information and taught how to prepare yourself before the initiation? I’m asking to understand, not to find fault.

In Kechara, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche always make sure we understand what teachings he is giving and where he got it from and all the necessary information that we need to know, so that we are well informed and know what we are learning. I have not gotten any initiation from His Eminence, but by looking at how His Eminence will do even for a teaching, I’m very sure when His Eminence gives initiation, he will make sure we are well prepared and know exactly what we are doing. In fact, this blog is all about preparation before we get any higher teachings.

Therefore, to answer your question, I would ask you to please go back to your lama or your center to seek for help on the mantras recitation. It is illogical that you have received an initiation from a lama and you ask someone else for a repetition.

Before you are able to do so, I would suggest you to learn up the mantras with your own efforts especially if it is written in English alphabets without miss. If it is in other language, please ask your dharma centre for it.

This is what I can advise from the limited knowledge I have.

Question asked by mimi

Can those who do not have the dorje namjoma aka Vajravidarana iniatation , recite is his mantra for purification

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear mimi,

The purpose of an initiation is for the tantric master to give a transmission of a particular practice, so that the student is allowed to engage in the practice. With initiation, the practice will be effective. Whether the students receive the initiation or not, the practice remains powerful for what it is specifically catered for.

As Dorje Namjom’s practice requires initiation, it would be better if you receive the initiation and then recite the mantra afterwards. You can do Vajrasattva purification practice for the time being as it does not require initiation. You can read more about this practice here by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/vajrasattva-and-prostrations-transcript.html.

Question asked by Lynda

Dear Tsem Rinpoche,

With deep respects and love and gratitude. Your blog saved my practice. Due to the information and dharma articles in your blog I have become stronger and now the fund raiser and President of my Dharma centre. It’s hard to fundraise but after speaking up and changing myself so people will have a good view of Buddhism, I am hitting more success. Fear was my enemy just like you taught (Thank you so much). I wanted to take a break from the center not that I was doing that much, but I realize I don’t want to waste time and blame others anymore. Just get the work done. My mother ‘taught’ us to blame and I’ve been doing that my whole life. It didn’t work for my mom and it is not working for me. Thank you for your truthful and direct teachings always. You are a rare gem that no one should lose. Your students are incredible lucky to be with you. We meet our teacher perhaps once every two years for three weeks when he travels to the US. Please continue your blogging. I am a ardent fan of your blog and share with many friends. I read and re-read your articles often. Thank you for all your work. Thank you and your team. Lynda

Question asked by AL

Any resources available on the following discussion from The Elephant Journal.

This is not possible in higher forms of Buddhism [in response to a famous athlete claiming his marital infidelity was related to him using various women for a tantric practice]. In the highest yoga forms of Buddhism (tantra), no actual physical copulation is necessary to achieve higher attainments. Most advanced practitioners engage in tantric practice are celibate monks in fact. There are lay and monk practitioners. But higher tantra does not involve copulation. Higher achievements are compassion, wisdom, focus, tenacity, consistency and the ability not to project our minds wrongly creating more unhappiness for ourselves and others. Buddha achieved full awakening under the bodhi tree as a celibate monk 2,500 years ago.

  1. Reply by admin

    Dear Al,

Thank you for your question. His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche is a celibate and fully ordained monk, and Rinpoche is from the Gelug lineage, where the ordained monks and nuns must hold on to their vows very strictly until the end of their life. In fact, the founder of the Gelug lineage, Lama Tsongkhapa, demonstrated that it is possible to achieve ultimate enlightenment without the use of a consort.

To quote from Lama Tsongkhapa’s biography: “He attained enlightenment after his death by—instead of bardo, achieving an illusory body after the clear light of death and then went on from that to enlightenment. And this was to emphasize the need for monks to follow strict celibacy.”

    Hope this helps. Thank you.

Question asked by Marco

Dear Pastors,

I was informed that if a person break the root bodhisattva vow, then the person can never reach the first bodhisattva level in this life. I would like to ask is that still the case even if the person do the vajrasattva purification? If that is the case, what will be the result of that person. Is there any suggested path and practice for this kind of people who break the root bodhisattva vow. In this life, what is the meaningful path for this kind of person if the person cannot reach the first bodhisattva level. Thank you very much for your kind attention.

Yours faithfully,

  1. Reply by pastor

    Dear Marco,

In The Bodhisattva Vow by Geshe Sonam Rinchen, he has mentioned that a restoration of vow is possible is we have broken the Bodhisattva vow bearing in mind that there’ll still be consequences for breaking the vow. Breaking a bodhisattva vow is creating an obstacle to reaching the Bodhisattva level; one will not become an exalted Bodhisattva in this life nor accumulate the positive energy necessary to become an exalted Bodhisattva.

Breaking a vow is the same as breaking one’s promise, commitment and samaya. His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche taught that when a student purposely and without conscientiousness breaks their samaya:
    1. It creates the karma for the students to find ideas, thoughts, and paths that lead to harm, selfishness and grasping attractive.
    2. The students will be easily influenced by friends who promote attachments, activities that waste time and generally away from the spiritual path.
    3. Their worldly works become ‘better’. Negative karma easily manifests in the students samsaric attachments manifesting very easily to draw them away from spiritual practice. This is to encourage them towards more samsaric activities and less dharma.
All these activities goes against the fundamental of the Bodhisattva vow, which is to generate Bodhicitta – the wish for enlightenment for ourselves and a strong wish to lead other sentient beings to full enlightenment.

Within Bodhicitta, compassion plays a very important role to lay the foundation in the practice of the Bodhisattva vows. In The Main Path to Enlightenment, Lama Tsongkhapa said that there are two unwholesome mental factors we must avoid, shamelessness and lack of consideration for others. These two unwholesome mental factors are referred to as “purposely and without conscientiousness” by His Eminence in the earlier paragraph.
    1. Shamelessness is a lack of concern about our own well-being, meaning we lack the concern about our own life – now and in the future. Without the concern for our life is very risky as we will not do anything to create good causes for the future.
    2. Lack of consideration for others mainly referring to people who are important in our lives such as our parents, spiritual guide or anyone who are concerned with our spiritual life, without which we are most likely not keeping our vows.

It is important for us to understand that we must refrain from unwholesome activities regardless we have vows or not, because all negative actions will cause us and others to suffer. It is more so if we were to cause those important to our spiritual growth harm that they will feel extreme pain when we let them down. If we fail to even do this now, what more can we expect from our spiritual practice, not to mention reaching the first Bodhisattva level, within this one life time.

Coming back to the Bodhisattva vows, there are sixteen of the eighteen root downfalls that will only be considered as complete downfalls if the following four factors are included at the time when one is transgressing the vows: 1) not being mindful of the disadvantages; 2) having no desire to stop the action; 3) indulging in the act with great pleasure and delight; 4) lacking any shame or conscience. With one or more of these factors missing, it is still an infringement but the consequences will be slightly lighter. If the four factors are all there, then the consequences will be heavy. However, if after breaking a vow, we regretted for having done it, seen the disadvantages of breaking it and have no sense of satisfaction and pleasure from it, the result is immediately lighter.

The two root downfalls that do not need all four factors to be considered broken completely are: holding wrong views and giving up the pledge of altruistic aspiration. The moment we have either one of these two on our mind, we have completely broken the vow. We can’t even consider ourselves a Buddhist if we do not believe in the law of cause and effects, not to mention to be a Bodhisattva path practitioner, for example. As mentioned earlier, the fundamental of the Bodhisattva vow is Bodhicitta, giving up bodhicitta means we have the wish to not want to help others. It is obvious that this vow does not need the four factors in order for it to be considered as a downfall.

In The Living Buddha Within, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche has mentioned that all purifications are based on the four opponent powers. The purification practices can include prostrations pair with taking refuge, mandala offerings, Vajratsattva meditation and the Thirty-five Confessional Buddhas meditation. They can also include visiting holy places, serving our spiritual guide, making offerings to the Three Jewels, performing charities and so on. For a purification practice to be effective it will not depend on the amount we do or how and where we do it. For any of these purification practices to have any effect, it must be based on the four opponent powers: 1) regret, 2) resolve, 3) remediate actions, 4) doing the opposite actions. So, to answer your question, the transgression of any of the sixteen root downfalls can be restored with the Vajrasattva practice. Please refer to https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/vajrasattva-and-prostrations-transcript.html for more information on the practice.

There are many ways to repair our transgression:
    1. Re-taking the vows in a proper ceremony from our spiritual guide or any other qualified practitioners.
    2. Restoring the vows in front of at least four fully ordained monks or nuns (if unavailable, four lay person who hold their bodhisattva vows fully) who understand and hold the vow themselves.
    3. If we have not really fully broken a root vow, we can restore the vows in front of our’s spiritual guide or a person who understands and holds the vows.
    4. Lastly, if there is nobody available, we can restore the vows in front of a Buddha statue or through visualisation.

Please bear in mind that after a sincere confession and restoring of the vows, the original negative consequences cannot be complete wiped away, but at least the negative karma will not be increased further.

I hope this helps and apologies for the delay in answering your question.

Question asked by Ping

Dear Pastors,

If we watch romantic movies (not porno), with kissing scene, does that consider breaking the sexual misconduct vow? Can we keep watching as long we don do anything, but our mind just imagining?

  1. Reply by admin

    Dear Ping,

For karma to be created, and in this case, the karma of breaking the sexual misconduct vow, there are a few factors involved:

    – The wish to do it
    – The actual act of doing it
    – The completion of the act
    – Rejoicing after the completion of the act

Sexual misconduct in general means having sexual relationship with a person who is not your partner/spouse (unless it is a mutually agreed open relationship but let’s not get into that).

So analyzing the factors above, when you watched a kissing scene, you are not engaging in any actual sexual act with any person, definitely not the actor/actress in the movies; you did not complete the act, and there is nothing to rejoice after that because there is no actual act. Therefore, you did not break any sexual misconduct vows.

Of course you can keep watching the romantic scene, it does not harm anybody in general so it is absolutely fine. There only negative side I can think of is that the romantic arouses our desire, keeps our mind occupied with the thought of romance/desire over and over again, making us crave for it more and more, thus taking time away from meaningful things for example engaging in spiritual practice or charity work of helping others.

I hope this answers your question, please feel free to ask more if you have any doubt or question, it is my pleasure to share with you Dharma knowledge which is imparted upon me by my guru His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche.

    Thank you.

    sincerely,
    Pastor Loh Seng Piow

Question asked by elad

hello there, im practicing meditation for the last year and as long as im getting more aware of buddhism i feel more and more connected to it or prehaps to myself. i hope you can tell me how can i make my practice deeper.
thank you very much.

  1. Reply by admin

    Dear elad,

Thank you for your question, I recommend you to continue increasing your knowledge in the Dharma by reading the precious teachings in this blog of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, as well as His many Youtube teachings in http://www.youtube.com/tsemtulku

Then, for your actual practice, I would like to share with you a method given by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, on how to make your practice deeper, which you can do on your own:

    1. Set up a simple Shrine according to your means and have an image of a Buddha, a text (Lam Rim) and stupa. Representing your wish to achieve the Body, Speech and Mind of a Buddha.

    2. Make minimum of 8 water bowl offerings per day of water or more.

    3. Read up on how to do prostrations, mandala offerings, vajrasattvas mantric meditations, Guru Yoga of for example Tsongkapa, and Refuge recitations with correct contemplations. I have a video on youtube on how to do prostrations, and how to do guru yoga of Tsongkapa.

    4. Read up on as much dharma as you can. Knowledge for a beginner is much more important for practice than anything else.

    5. Take simple vows of vegetarianism if you are not already for short periods of time regularly and extend it over time. Take these vows on your personal shrine is fine.

    6. Be easy on yourself and take breaks often. Do not go for high sounding initiations that promise easy enlightenment as there is no such thing as easy enlightenment, or complicated practices and rituals when you are new. Must have knowledge and understanding of Tantra before entering it’s door. It’s a lifetimes commitment and not for ‘casual’ shoppers. Be ready by study.

    7. Lam Rim, Wheel of Sharp weapons and 50 Verses of Guru Devotion would be excellent to read, re read and study.

    8. You can start on the Guru Yoga of Tsongkapa and prostrations at first for now. Do just 21 prostrations in full length for now. But learn up how to do it first.

I wish you luck and spiritual attainments. Be easy on yourself. At the heart of the preliminary practices is to be familiar with our minds and how it tricks us thinking more of everything is better when it is not the case. Understanding that many things that makes us ‘happy’ or sad are just projected. When the supporting factors are taken away, they don’t exist. If they don’t exist, then we should not get caught up in their web.

    Thank you.

    Pastor Loh Seng Piow

Question asked by Lol

Regarding on the video where kandarohi and rinpoche debate, got one thing which I don't really understand on imputation. What it means about imputation in buddism? And ya how does the irresponsible person get more negative karma by allowing an imputation from the perceiver? I need more detail explanation on that part. I'm quite confused.tq in advance

  1. Reply by admin

    hi Lol,

To put it simply, “imputation” in Buddhism means labeling, we impute, we label all beings, objects, phenomena around us with good, bad, pleasant, repulsive, neutral, exciting, disgusting…we label all that with our deluded mind, that is called imputation. A Buddha’s mind which is enlightened and non-dualistic, are free from all those imputations, a Buddha abides in total equanimity, a Buddha does not label any person, any being, any phenomena as good, bad, attractive, repulsive, pleasant, unpleasant, friends, enemies…

Therefore, in the case of Kandarohi’s debate with Rinpoche, the irresponsible person, due to his irresponsibility and not doing his job and letting others do his job instead, will create stress, anger, frustration etc. negative emotions from people around him, yes no doubt that these emotions are negative in itself and thus the people that feel this way towards the irresponsible person are feeling it out of imputation, but it is the irresponsible person who trigger those people to have those negative emotions in the first place, he triggers their imputations, he triggers their feelings of anger, hatred, frustration etc towards him due to his irresponsibility, since he is the trigger and source of their imputations, thus he creates more negative karma by causing that on others, he creates more negative karma by increasing others’ delusions and negative emotions.

I hope this is clear enough for you. Please feel free to ask more questions if you have. It is my pleasure to share.

    Thank you.

Meet the Pastors

Serving the community. Tirelessly

Combining the responsibilities of the ordained and the appearance of a layperson, pastors are the connection between the sangha and the everyday practitioner. They are ordinary people who have taken an extraordinary step in dedicating their lives towards sharing the Buddhist tradition. As laypeople holding vows, pastors will make the Dharma accessible to more people, giving them guidance and sharing knowledge. The pastors are usually present at Kechara House and available for consultation anytime. For more information, contact house@kechara.com.

Pastor Chia (sangha to be)

As a pastor, Chia will dedicate his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

Ordained as a Pastor in 2011, Chia Song Peng has had a rich and varied Dharma career. He has held a core position with the Kechara Paradise retail outlets, served as a personal attendant to Tsem Rinpoche, embarked on various pilgrimages and received initiations into higher yoga tantric practices. He is accomplished in many pujas and has a deep understanding of the Dharma.

As a pastor, Chia has dedicated his life to befitting others through spreading the works of Tsem Rinpoche and Dharma to many people, through the use of pujas, rituals, counseling and sharing of his knowledge.

When Chia first met Tsem Rinpoche, he was asked if he wanted to become a monk, however even though this was his aspiration he informed Tsem Rinpoche that he would do so at a later date. For Chia, as he has is already in the Dharma full-time, it would be best if he became ordained. Tsem Rinpoche has reminded Chia from time to time to work towards becoming a monk and he promised that he would do so in the future.

Kechara began from nothing to become a growing Dharma organisation with major projects such as Kechara Forest Retreat, so Chia thinks that this is the perfect time to become ordained as a monk. Recently Tsem Rinpoche asked Chia again if he would like to be ordained, this time Chia said yes.

Pastor Khong Jean Ai (sangha to be)

Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings.

Jean Ai met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche as a young child and through her parents' involvement with Kechara over the years, she has never known a life without His Eminence. Jean Ai was a regular volunteer of Tsem Ladrang during her childhood and teenage years. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Warwick in the UK and working at the London Probation Service, she returned to Kuala Lumpur to join Tsem Ladrang's e-division. There she managed kechara.com, responsible for the weekly Kechara e-newsletter, including content generation and editing. Since then she has joined His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s writing team, responsible for executing Rinpoche’s personal instructions and managing his correspondence.

Having visited a nunnery in India in 2004, Jean Ai remembers noticing how happy and purposeful everyone was. She had a feeling of familiarity and the sight of the robes comforted her. Immediately, Jean Ai messaged her mother who told her to ask Rinpoche’s advice. Rinpoche told her to complete her secular education so that when she taught the Dharma her words would carry the credibility and weight of a university degree, something she completed with the motivation that some day she wanted to become a nun.

Through her ordination as a nun, Jean Ai wishes to become a vessel that holds the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit future generations, inspiring others to live by the Buddha’s teachings. Through this she hopes to repay the kindness of her parents and her Guru. Above all she wants to abide in a state free of suffering, and she wants this for others as well.

Pastor Shin Tan (sangha to be)

For Shin, this is a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Before joining Kechara, Shin worked as a lecturer and provider of content and e-learning content solutions for various start-ups. Whilst providing training to educators teaching students in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at various colleges, she was invited to attend a Dharma talk given by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at Kechara House. This event rekindled her interest in Tibetan Buddhism, as she recalled the joy of accompanying her parents to teachings as a teenager.

Joining Kechara Media & Publications in 2006 as a volunteer, Shin assumed a full time position there as a Marketing Executive, with the aim of making His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings available to more people around the world. Shin is now a member of the Tsem Ladrang Team, who takes care of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s secular matters, enabling Rinpoche to focus on teaching the holy Dharma.

Shin states that when she decided to join Kechara full time, she had already decided to be of some benefit to others and spend the rest of her life doing only that. Working closely with His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, seeing his tireless effort in helping others and spreading the Buddhadharma through the Gaden tradition despite tremendous challenges has made her realise that the next logical step is to become ordained as she has the opportune conditions to study with her Guru. For Shin this is also a great step forward to being fully committed to the cause of others and repaying others’ kindness through sharing the Dharma with others.

Pastor Adeline Woon (sangha to be)

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission and wishes to dedicate herself fully towards the benefit of others.

Adeline stumbled across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche's blog towards the end of 2010 and has been following his blog and Facebook page ever since. Since graduating from Dharma Drum Buddhist College Taiwan with a Masters of Arts in Religious Studies in July 2012, she returned to Malaysia and joined Kechara as a Senior Education Executive. Adeline was attracted by His Eminence’s straightforwardness and impressed at Kechara's growth under his guidance. To Adeline, His Eminence is someone who walks the talk, keeps his promises and sincerely cares for others displaying an excellent example of guru devotion, qualities that she seeks to develop herself.

Since finding her spiritual home here in Kechara, Adeline has made dharma work her life’s mission. It was in May 2013 that she officially requested His Eminence for ordination as a nun to dedicate her life fully for the dharma. According to Adeline, become ordained means that she is being true to her calling to live according to the dharma and be of benefit to others.

This however can only be achieved by meeting and studying under her root Guru. Adeline has been fortunate enough to have met with hers - His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche.

Pastor Niral Patel (sangha to be)

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Niral was born and raised in the UK, having graduated with a BA in Anthropology, he was working as a Financial Administrator for a Serviced Apartment & Hotel company as well as a Management Services company before stumbling across His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s Youtube channel, entirelyby accident. It was through His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche’s teachings that he began to understand the importance of practicing the Dharma, in order to benefit himself and others around him.

Having been in contact with one of Tsem Rinpoche’s long time students in the UK, he was encouraged to visit Kechara in late 2012 for a 10 day visit. At the end of the visit Tsem Rinpoche requested Niral to come to work at Kechara, to which he agreed.

Niral moved to Malaysia in February 2013 to work as an education coordinator at Kechara House, assisting the Education Division in the creation and implementation of the new education syllabus, teaching teenagers during the Kechara Sunday Dharma School. Ever since meeting Tsem Rinpoche, he has always been encouraged by Tsem Rinpoche to do more Dharma work and strive to better himself. It is with that in mind, that Niral has requested monastic ordination.

It is Niral’s motivation for full ordination to better himself, learn the teachings of our lineage in order to preserve them for future generations. He wishes to benefit others, just as he has benefited and is still benefiting from Tsem Rinpoche’s explanation of the Dharma.

Pastor Tan Gim Lee (sangha to be)

Gim Lee’s main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara’s doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche’s kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa’s holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

She discovered Kechara by chance in 2006 and started to participate Kechara's activities almost immediately especially the retreat to collect 10 million Migtsema recitations. In April 2006, when Gim Lee met H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and first listened to his teachings, she wept uncontrollably. Though she could not understand it at the time, she had finally found her perfect teacher. She is especially touched by Tsem Rinpoche's compassionate method of teaching by setting his own examples.

Having joined as a staff of Kechara House responsible for housekeeping in 2009, Gim Lee is now one of Kechara House's Front Desk Managers predominantly based in the retreat centre in Bentong, Pahang. She also teaches the Sunday Dharma Class and moderates Dharma discussions on Tsem Rinpoche's blog chat.

The many teachings she has received from Tsem Rinpoche have changed her priorities in life. She found answers to her questions about the purpose of life, and she has realised that the way to overcome the sufferings of pain and anger is by following the path of compassion and wisdom as taught by Lord Buddha. These realisations have led to her request to be ordained as a Sangha member.

As pastor now, and later as a Buddhist nun, Gim Lee's main focus is to guide and help anyone who steps through Kechara's doors through Dharma sharing, counselling, performing pujas and other Buddhist services. She wishes to repay Rinpoche's kindness by spreading Lama Tsongkhapa's holy teachings and inspiring others on the spiritual path.

Pastor Loh Seng Piow (sangha to be)

Loh Seng Piow developed a strong wish to help Rinpoche in spreading the Dharma to the world. With that determination, Loh Seng Piow chose not to pursue his PhD degree in Cambridge University (for which he had been offered a place), resigned from his research job, and joined Tsem Rinpoche as full-time Dharma worker, and has never looked back since.

Back in 2001, Loh Seng Piow had no inkling of just how involved in Dharma he would become. As a Masters degree-holder in Engineering, Loh Seng Piow was working as a research engineer in Singapore when he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s talk left a strong impression on him and after a few encounters with Rinpoche, Loh Seng Piow started developing websites for Rinpoche and Kechara.

Loh Seng Piow was trained in science, but soon realised that there were many questions that science could not answer. At the same time, he also felt that science and technology are not the solution to human problems, as humans are much better off compared to thousands years ago, yet the problems in this world are still the same, if not more, and we do not seem to be happier than our ancestors.

Loh Seng Piow soon realised that the Dharma is the ultimate solution to human problems, and that the methods used by His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche are very suitable for this modern era.

Meeting Rinpoche was a very refreshing experience for Loh Seng Piow, as he never knew Dharma could be so unconventional yet maintain its essence. As Rinpoche’s personal attendant, Loh Seng Piow has had many incredible moments with Rinpoche and considers himself extremely fortunate because he sees real Dharma in action, both on and off the throne. It challenges him to practice Dharma 24/7. In this way, Rinpoche has blown away his old and persistent way of thinking, which was very much focused on the outer rituals of Dharma.

Having seen that Tsem Rinpoche truly embodies what he teaches, Loh Seng Piow is convinced beyond doubt that it is possible to develop our minds to a higher state, and ultimately achieving enlightenment. All these factors have propelled Loh Seng Piow to take a step further in his Dharma career to become ordained as a pastor in order to be even more effective in sharing and disseminating the Dharma to benefit others.

Pastor Yek Yee

Naturally an introvert, Yek Yee has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

Independence was forced upon Kok Yek Yee from the tender age of nine, when she had to juggle between work and school to make ends meet. Always the introvert, Yek Yee had few friends and had difficulty expressing herself. So it was unexpected when she chose a career in journalism.

Yek Yee excelled as an award-winning reporter with Guang Ming Daily and Nanyang Siang Pau. Her articles garnered her a fanbase, and in writing, she found an outlet for the thoughts and feelings that she could not verbalise. However, despite her success, Yek Yee was not satisfied. Temporary happiness was not what she was looking for – success, money, relationships, or fame was not the key.

In her search for happiness, Yek Yee met H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, who told her “don’t retaliate with your speech, but use your power of writing to express yourself”. This led her to join Kechara Media & Publications as a writer; subsequently she was appointed Senior Editor as well as a Liaison to His Eminence.

Yek Yee now holds a core role in Kechara Care, giving advice, tours, counseling and teachings to whoever walks through their doors. Through courage and determination, she has transformed what was once her weakness into her strength; making what was once impossible now eminently possible.

As a Pastor, her patience and open-mindedness developed through her journey with Kechara will bring comfort and solace, and her new-found ability to nurture and teach others will bring hope to many.

Pastor Lanse Chiah

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Lanse graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Jinan University in Guangzhou, China in 1999 and became a part-time lecturer for several years, teaching western medicine in a Traditional Chinese medical college in Kuala Lumpur.

For a long time, Lanse remained an atheist, subconsciously searching for a spiritual guru as she sought answers to questions she harboured in her mind, questions that had led her into a state of depression during her time at university. As such, she would often read philosophical books in her search for answers.

Lanse first came to know of Kechara in 2007, through her friend of over 10 years, Pastor Yek Yee. She was surprised to see a complete transformation in Pastor Yek Yee, whom she had always known as a non-spiritual person. The first book by Kechara that Lanse chanced upon was the Chinese version of Be Greedy. Naturally, Lanse was skeptical at first, thus she read the book in an attempt to find mistakes with the philosophy. However, she couldn’t find any and was left impressed by how logical the explanations in the book were.

In March 2009, Lanse joined Kechara Media & Publications (KMP) part-time to carry out Chinese translation and help with transcription. The following year, she contemplated upon whether to pursue a full-time medical or a Dharma career, finally deciding on the latter. Lanse came to realise that, although both careers share the same motivation of easing people’s sufferings, she felt that her work in Dharma could lead to a greater contribution for the sake of all sentient beings in a deeper, spiritual sense.

Having been a Pastor for a year, Lanse wishes to continue with her integral duties by renewing her vows again.

Pastor Han Nee

It was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

Lim Han Nee, a mother of two, is a retired secondary school principal. She retired in December 2000 after a 30-year career in education. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Education at Leicester University in the UK, at the end of 2001.

After gaining her master’s degree, Han Nee considered further options of embarking on a doctorate in education or spending her years in retirement, travelling and visiting family. At the same time, she was also in search of her spiritual path. She had begun exploring Theravadan and Chinese Mahayana Buddhism for answers to questions she had.

In December 2004, Han Nee attended a teaching retreat on the topic of the Lamrim and White Tara held by His Eminence Gelek Rinpoche. As the retreat proceeded, she found her questions were being answered. Then in June 2005, Han Nee was introduced to Kechara by her sister, where she met her spiritual guide, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, who has recently told her that she must go all the way in the Dharma for the benefit of others.

Han Nee had been a school guidance counsellor for nearly twenty years. However, it was not until she witnessed how Rinpoche brought peace and comfort to her dying mother, that she realised she also wanted to touch others with the Dharma.

A member of Kechara’s Puja Team, who conduct sponsored pujas in Shabten Khang, Han Nee is also a member of the Education Division with the portfolio of Content Development. Apart from this, Han Nee is also a member of the weekly Kechara Chat Time team.

Pastor David Lai

In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

David Lai has been a student of His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche for over a decade now and was one of the founding members of Kechara. He joined Kechara as a full time staff in 2005 and has been working in various departments beginning with the Kechara Paradise outlets.

Right from the beginning, David had been advised by His Eminence to go into writing. Overcoming various hurdles, David finally began his literary career with the publication of his first book and autobiography, There’s No Way But Up in 2009. The book charts his spiritual journey from his childhood and culminates in the meeting with His Eminence.

The positive feedback from this book led him to write various other publications like Vajrayogini and Other Power Places in Nepal – a pilgrim’s guide of Nepal, Tales My Lama Told Me – a book on short stories and Conversations in Love – a book on relationships. These books continue to inspire and bring people onto the Dharma.

Besides writing, David has found his passion in sharing the Dharma since his earlier days working in the Kechara Paradise outlets. Over the years, David has received innumerable teachings from His Eminence, ranging from public teachings to personal instructions and advice. He is known to passionately share these teachings whenever he can and to whomever he meets. In 2014, with a sincere wish to benefit others, David decided to be ordained as a Buddhist pastor to continue serving the spiritual needs of the organisation.

Pastor Henry Ooi

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public.

Born in 1952 in Penang, Henry moved to Kuala Lumpur in search of work after he finished his Form Five studies in 1969. He worked at different types of jobs and it was when he was jobless in 1997/8 that he met His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche at the house of his cousin, Ruby (now Dato’ Ruby Khong), when Rinpoche was giving a dharma teaching. At that teaching Henry was awed by how Rinpoche taught Dharma with simple yet profound explanations.

With the kind guidance, teachings and Dharma practices by Rinpoche including instruction to engage in their first spiritual retreat, Henry and his wife Angel started a small business that soon became profitable. A few years later after Kechara House Buddhist Association was founded, Rinpoche started to enrol students as liaisons and that was when Henry and Dato’ Ruby offered themselves. Later more students were elected as liaisons that saw the birth of Liaisons Council. The Liaisons Council is now known as the Board of Directors of which Henry is one of its members.

Currently Henry is the Project Director, overseeing the construction and completion of projects in the Kechara Forest Retreat. Prior to this appointment he was the Head of Department in Kechara Paradise retail outlets of which he served for about ten years. He still remains as its company director as well as director for most of the companies within Kechara. He served one term as vice president of Kechara House Buddhist Association from 2012 to 2103.

After following Rinpoche as a Dharma student for all these years, learning and practicing the Dharma, Henry knows the importance of the pastors’ role in Kechara founded by Rinpoche. He wants to become a pastor to serve Rinpoche, to serve Kechara, and to serve the public. As he aspires to be a monk as he grows older, being a pastor of Kechara will pave the way for his aspiration. Henry believes that as one gets older in life, one should have already prepared for the imminent, death. And what a beautiful death it will be, to die in Kechara Forest Retreat in a monk’s robes. This is the kind of death that Henry wants. But before the imminent death happens, Henry wants to continue working in Kechara Forest Retreat, serving the community and whoever comes into it in whatever way he can. And when he is not physically anymore to serve others, he will request instructions from Rinpoche to enter into retreats in Kechara Forest Retreat.

Pastor Patsy Gooi

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work, dharma practices and being of benefit to others.

Formerly a full time housewife with plenty of free time, Patsy had the great fortune to visit Gaden Monastery and meet H.E. Tsem Rinpoche almost twenty years ago. That one week stay in the monastery changed her view of life. Prior to that, she had no spiritual inclinations but meeting Rinpoche stirred something inside her, and she realised that there was more to life than just eating, sleeping, shopping and having fun. Rinpoche’s approach to dharma was logical and practical but most importantly, he stressed that we should always focus out and work towards benefitting others. Rinpoche made dharma easy to understand and his advice was and still is, to “change inwardly, not outwardly.”

In 2009, after years of practicing and applying what she had learned from Rinpoche’s teachings, Patsy decided to set up a Kechara retail outlet in Penang to share the dharma with others. She knew that Rinpoche’s teachings were very applicable to the people of our time and that his activities would benefit others just as they had benefited her. She also wanted to repay the kindness of her Guru who had constantly helped and guided her. Today, Kechara Paradise Penang is not just a dharma shop but also organises puja sessions, animal liberation and dharma talks.

In 2010, again with Rinpoche’s blessings, Patsy set up the Kechara Soup Kitchen Activity Center in Penang. Saddened to see the plight of the homeless and urban poor on the streets, Patsy decided to practice “compassion through action” as taught by Rinpoche in the most active way she knows. Today, together with her team of volunteers, Patsy feeds the homeless and urban poor four times a week and provides basic food provisions to many hardcore poor families on a monthly basis.

All that Patsy wants now is to spend the rest of her life doing dharma work and dharma practices, and that she may be of benefit to others.

Pastor Albert Ratchaga

In 2008, Albert Ratchaga began working as a part timer in Kechara Paradise, but as he learned more about the works of Rinpoche and Kechara, Rinpoche’s kindness and compassion touched him deeply. He realised that his work gave his life more meaning and decided to join Kechara full time.

Through his work as a sales executive, Albert was able learn more Dharma from Rinpoche's teachings and use this wisdom to assist those who entered his store to overcome their problems, thus improving their lives.

Albert soon developed a deep wish to follow in Rinpoche’s footsteps and in 2016 was ordained as a Pastor to continue benefitting and serving others.

Wat Rong Khun better known as the White Temple, is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai province, Thailand. The gold symbolizes how people focus on worldly desires and money. The white building represents the idea to make merit and to focus on the mind. It is owned by a succesful Thai businessman who opened it to visitors in 1997. Awesome….This temple stands out through the white colour and use of pieces of glass that sparkle in the sun. The white colour signifies the purity of Buddha while the glass symbolizes Buddha’s wisdom. Located 3 hour drive from Chiang Mai built to honour and pay tribute to sacred Buddhist figures. Over time, temples grew in prominence and is one of the famous temples to visit in Thailand. I have visited years back its simple stunning temple which truly love the design and architecture .

Sak Yant, a traditional Thai tattooing practice, involves sacred geometrical and animal designs. Its often accompanied by Pali phrases, and is believed to offer power, protection, charisma, and other benefits to the wearer. Sak Yant tattoos are deeply rooted in Buddhist and spiritual beliefs, with each design and symbol carrying specific meanings and purported powers. Many designs are believed to provide protection against evil spirits, misfortune, and danger. Sak Yant tattoos are traditionally applied by monks or masters using a needle and ink, and the process is often accompanied by chants and blessings. I personally have not seen one yet . Sound interesting.

Jojo Struys is a travel and wellness personality, accredited yoga instructor, speaker and author. She visited Bangsar of Kechara outlet for a feature with Star Property. With her visit hopefully more people will get to know more of our Kechara . She had made a video with and Pastor David Lai all about Buddhist Arts. She openly admitted interested in Buddhist art . Buddhist art pieces have given her home a contemporary edge. Art was important to Buddhist religious life. It was not only part of ritual and worship but also served to transmit religious ideas, and artistic styles between cultures. Do agree with her statement ,…..if you want to change your life, change the way you think, because everything begins with you.”

n their theoretical model, rudeness has this impact on our ability to think because it engenders negative sadness, anger. Researchers have found that common negative behaviours can spread easily and have significant consequences. The best way to avoid rude people is to meet their acts of rudeness with kindness. Exposure to neurotoxins in society is not new. Children today are raised in an environment that is much different from those days. Nowadays they are exposed to behaviours, profane language, hostilities and stress from which we adults, raised a generation ago. Studies have shown that children exposed to serious psychological trauma during childhood are at risk of suffering increased psychiatric disorders. Interesting read.

Revisit this blog again . Reading comments in this blog Rich people have substantial assets and income, providing a sense of security and freedom from financial worries. Owning high-end cars, designer clothing and everything they want with their money. Rich people often have more time for leisure, hobbies, and travel, allowing them to pursue interests and experiences. They may live in large, luxurious homes and have or apartments, often in desirable locations and having personalized services. The fundamental difference in mindset between the rich and the poor is, the rich have understood a very simple principle money makes money. Rich people see money as an opportunity, while poor people see it as something to be earned. Poor people work hard for their money. It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has. Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much. The primary difference between rich people and poor people is how they handle their wealth. My thought been rich in this world it is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich.

Found this old post …disturbing. Having a name especially a Bar linked to Buddha to be disrespectful towards Buddhism. After much controversy the owner had it removed. The Buddha Bar located in Sabah by a young owner which opened without much thought had many people complaining. Later was forced to have its controversial name changed to ‘Peacock Garden’ and had apologised for the controversial name. As a devout Buddhist, the name ‘Buddha Bar’ which serves alcohol, is disrespectful to the revered Buddha.

Siberia, considered the heartland of shamanism inhabited by many different ethnic groups, and many of its peoples observe shamanistic. Many of the indigenous communities reclaiming their traditional spiritual and healing practices . Interesting. Siberian shamanism is often called Tengerism, involves various rituals, including drumming, chanting, trance states, and offerings to nature spirits and ancestors. This religious practice has deep roots in Siberia and Central Asia in recent years with roots in the Turkic and Mongolic cultures. Many who have been live in a remote part of Russia, have preserved their shamanic traditions due to their isolation. Many customs of Tengrism are still been practiced where they emphasizes a deep respect for nature and its various spirits, including those of the earth, water, and mountains. They do believe in the continued existence of souls and the importance of honouring their ancestors.
Thank you Rinpoche sharing this ancient religion.

Everyone of us has an unforgettable different experience, a different destination and itineraries. The journey to Shar Gaden Monastery back in 2019, making offerings to the sangha , by the Kecharians hold special moments and memories. They were on behalf of His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche and Kechara in making an offering to all 650 monks of the monastery. On this fruitful trip the Kecharians had the honour to catch a glimpse of the normally-covered holy statue of Dorje Shugden . Awesome this holy statue of Dorje Shugden was handmade by HH Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. The team was also granted an audience with H E Domo Geshe Chocktrul Rinpoche. Having the opportunity to make offerings to the monks was indeed meritorious. Rejoice to them. Looking at those beautiful pictures paints a thousands words. Thank you Rinpoche and team for this sharing. Merely looking at it is a blessing especially the Holy Statue of Dorje Shugden.

Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. We can’t let our failures define us. Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure. Success is never permanent, and failure is never final. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness .Sometimes just reminding ourselves of the temporality of failure enables us to forge ahead and stay focus looking forward . Failure isn’t something many of us can handle gracefully. And even though we know it’s a common human condition, figuring out how to stay motivated in the face of failure .
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

Finally HH Dalai Lama said we can practice Dorje Shugden. After all these years of deep frustration felt by the Tibetan people. They who lack religious freedom been denied and been exploited in all sectors of society. More than 60 years the Tibetan leadership has cause the sufferings of those in exile who had propitiate Dorje Shugden. Dalai Lama did reiterated although he recommended not worshipping Dorje Shugden as it is a personal choice and freedom. Interesting read.

Working in a private hospital before ,having witnessed many personal tragedies faced by the living and dying patients. Many of these poor people faced their death with fear, with misery and pain before departing this world. With the images of all these in my mind, on occasion feeling sad and grieve at times when those we have cared .But nonetheless we should recognise certain truths. All of us are going to leave this world at one time and leaving those we love. In the teaching of the Buddha, all of us will pass away eventually as a part in the natural process of birth, old-age and death and that we should always keep in mind the impermanence of life. Along the journey of life, we are reminded of our own inevitable ends in waiting and everything is a blip of transience and impermanent. Be responsible, good and positive for ourselves and towards others. This leads to calmness, happiness and an outlook which contributes to a calm and controlled mind at the time of death. We have to remind ourselves the importance of rebirth and taking time to prepare for their own demise before its too late.To cultivate the good karma, our good actions are an excellent way prepare for our death. Having lead a responsible and compassionate life and have no regrets when death approaches enables us to surrender without a struggle. The life that we all cherish and wish to hold on. We are doomed to the endless cycles of life and death, we should learn and practices Dharma teachings .We are given a chance in life and choice to determine our future, to determine where we will go for rebirth. Spend our time on earth wisely before its too late.

The Eerie Enigma of the Mothman are refer to the legendary, humanoid, winged creature as said by the locals as where is was been sighted. Since then it had sparking a blend of fear and fascination among the locals in the Point Pleasant, West Virginia area. This creature became an eerie symbol of fear, tragedy, and fascination for decades to come since the stories are so enduring and pervasive . The first reported encounter in 1966 in West Virginia and to the most recent one in 2024 in Kane, Illinois. In the quiet town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, the mysterious creature had igniting one of the most puzzling legends in American folklore. Witnesses described this creature standing over seven feet tall, with a wingspan that could rival a small aircraft, glowing red eyes, and a human-like figure. This interesting, could it be real no one knows, there’s something out there for sure.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is considered the incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and therefore he is an enlightened being. H H Dalai Lama has strongly discouraged the practice of Dorje Shugden worship within Tibetan Buddhism. Dorje Shugden is a prominent deity in the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Many highly attained Lamas have been relying on this Powerful Protector for centuries and even Dalai lama previously do propitiate Dorje Shugden . It cannot be wrong and its wrong to view it as a form of “spirit worship”. All his previous 9 reincarnations practiced with devotion, all of the Dalai Lamas teachers practiced Dorje Shugdan as well . The Tibetan community is torn over this issue and this has been the cause of much suffering and unnecessary prejudice. Dalai Lama is without doubt an enlightened being that surely cannot be tricked by a spirit. Dalai Lama did composed a praise to Dorje Shugden while at Dungkar Monastery . Interesting article , may more people read this and to understand better regarding this controversy. In 2020, the Dalai Lama made a Uturn by saying we can practice Dorje Shugden . Thats’ wonderful and relief for many practitioners.

Butön Rinchen Drup, 11th Abbot of Shalu Monastery, was a 14th-century Sakya master and Tibetan Buddhist leader. Butön Rinchen Drup a Tibetan great scholar and translator, known for systematizing the Tibetan Buddhist canon containing the Indian scriptures based on the spoken words of the Buddha. He also compiled the Tangyur collection that contains the Indian and Tibetan commentaries of these teachings. He wrote a famous text, the History of Buddhism in India and Tibet, which many Tibetan scholars utilize in their study till today. He remains to this day as one of the most important Tibetan historians and Buddhist writers in the history of Buddhism and Tibet. He was not merely a capable administrator but he is remembered to this very day as a prodigious scholar and writer and is Tibet’s most celebrated historian. After his death he strongly influenced the development of esoteric studies and psychic training in Tibet for centuries. Interesting biography of a great scholar.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

My Dharma boy (left) and Oser girl loves to laze around on the veranda in the mornings. They enjoy all the trees, grass and relaxing under the hot sun. Sunbathing is a favorite daily activity. I care about these two doggies of mine very much and I enjoy seeing them happy. They are with me always. Tsem Rinpoche Always be kind to animals and eat vegetarian- https://bit.ly/2Psp8h2

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. 7 years ago
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
