    Dear Hesed,

    Thank you for your question. Asking this question shows you think about things well and have a strong urge to know why things happen. This wanting to know and understand is a sign of being spiritual as you think about life and why things happen. According to Buddhist philosophy, we believe in something known as ‘karma’. This, although taught by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, was not created by him. Instead he saw the nature of reality, and told others how the world exists.

    In today’s world most people have a vague understanding of karma, but as a topic itself, it is very complex. In short, it means that if you do good things, good things will happen to you and if you do bad things, bad things will happen to you. But coupled with this, is the notion that we have countless previous lives. The actions we engaged in during these previous lives affect us now in this life, if the causes and conditions for a particular karma to manifest are right.

    For example, in this life we may have financial difficulties or a lack of resources to live well. This is the karmic effect of having been miserly in previous lives. This manifests as us not having the funds or resources we need in this life. While this may seem unfair, it is just the way that the world exists.

    One of the Four Noble Truths taught by the historical Buddha is that suffering exists, and in fact Buddhists believe that all life is full of suffering. That is why Buddhists strive to better themselves in order to achieve enlightenment. Once you are enlightened, you are no longer subject to this suffering. Rather than just concentrate on the negative side of things, when you study karma, you also study how to counter negative karma. This is done by doing good deeds and helping others to alleviate them of their own suffering.

    There is however, another more subtle form of karma, and that is what we term as imprints or habituation. Over the course of countless lifetimes, as we perform the same sorts of actions again and again, this seeps deeper into our mind, and we end up developing certain tendencies. For example, someone is this life may have a lot of unexplainable anger. This comes from countless previous lives, in which the person was angry, acted out of anger or made other people angry. Therefore the karmic result is to be prone to anger in their current life.

    So, the various feelings that make us suffer emotionally, such as guilt, sadness, jealousy, etc., are not actually due to external forces, but because we have the karma to feel them, due to actions and thoughts taken in previous lifetimes or even through habituation in this life.

    In regards to these emotions that make us suffer being the sins of our ancestors or dark entities, Buddhism places the majority of what happens to us on the individual themselves rather than outside forces. Sometimes a person may indeed be afflicted by a spirit and experience a severe disturbance in their emotional state. This is actually due to the person themselves having the karma to be affected in this manner. For those that do not have such karma, no matter how much the spirit tries to disturb them, they will not feel the effects of this disturbance simply because they do not have the karma to go through that experience.

    While outside forces can have an effect on our emotional state, they cannot affect us if we do not have the karma to be affected. This not only applied to emotional suffering, but physical suffering as well. We often here stories of people surviving accidents, when other people in the same accident did not. This is because the individual did not have the karma to be harmed by the accident, whereas the others did have that karma. The accident acted as the conditions for the karma to ripen. But if you do not have the karma than nothing will happen.

    All of this that I have mentioned is very brief, as the entire topic cannot be covered here.     Dear Woeser,

    I am very sorry to hear that you are going through these difficulties at this time. I know that this situation can be very hard. Everything we go through in life, from the good to the bad is actually due to karma. Karma are the results of actions we have made earlier in this life or from previous lives. This probably does not sound fair, and you are right, it is not. But one thing about karma that people often forget is that it is not fixed. It can be changed, that is what the Buddha taught.

    The way to change your karma, is to take charge of your life and engage in actions that are beneficial. This will create the energies so that your negative karma does not open and positive karma opens instead, leading to a happier life. From a Buddhist perspective financial problems in this life or a lack of resources is due to having been miserly in a previous life. However, the way to overcome this is to do the opposite. The opposite of being miserly is therefore to be generous.

    Being generous does not necessarily mean buying things for people or doing things that involve money. You can be generous by spending time with your family and friends, helping them in any way that you can. It can mean spending your free time doing something beneficial such as helping the poor, elderly or the sick. It could even mean just listening to or being there for someone when they need help. According to the Buddha and the many masters that have taught the path to enlightenment, when we focus on other instead of ourselves, this is a form of generosity.

    In fact, the more we spend time on helping others, the more our own problems will be resolved. This can be on a karmic level or even a physical level. For example, if we help someone now, perhaps in the future when we are in even more in need to assistance, they will be the ones to help us.

    To aid you in this, I would like to suggest that you engage in two practices. The first is the practice of Lama Tsongkhapa. The commentary was given by His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche, and is a central practice within our lineage. In fact, it is also known to help calm and stabilise the mind so that we can think logically rather than emotionally.

    Gyenze is the increase form of the Dharma protector Dorje Shugden. As with many other Dharma protector practices, Gyenze attracts the energies of increase into our lives. This leads to an increase in anything that is beneficial in our lives. For example, the resources we need to live and work well. As such, Gyenze’s practice is excellent for riding us of our financial issues so that we have enough to live from. Gyenze aids in this, so that we can spend more time practicing the Dharma and benefiting others. Many people have seen their financial fortunes turn around through the blessings of Gyenze. Gyenze’s role as a Dharma protector is just like any other Dharma protector whose function is aid sincere practitioners. I hope this helps.

    Thank you for your question. We all make mistakes in our lives, and that is just the way life is. In samsara we will always experience pain in many ways, and that is one of the reasons Buddhists seeks to transcend samsara, to be free of pain and suffering. While most people only see pain and suffering as physical, there are many different types and emotional pain is one of them. While you are saddened by the situation, you shouldn’t get caught up in the emotions you are going through. Rather, you should try and think that yes, you are suffering, yes you did create the mess. But then what? More often than not, we get caught up in our emotions and are not able to think properly or act in a logical manner.

    Since you have created the mess, don’t be sad for too long. If the friendship matters a lot to you, then you should try to make amends as best as possible. Talk to your friend and apologise if you can. The best way to get over these sorts of situations is by talking and making amends physically with the person. Rather than merely thinking of the type of friendship you had, you should strive to repair it and then perhaps even make it better than before, to show your friend that they are important to you.

    From a spiritual perspective, you should engage in the join practice of Lama Tsongkhapa and the Dharma protector Dorje Shugden. Dear pastor, I am married but have not been blessed with a kid after several years. How can I overcome the pain I am going through?     Thank you for your question. I am very sorry to hear of your situation and that of your friend. One thing we need to remember is that the Buddha explained to us how karma works. Everything we experience in life, whether good or bad is due to our actions previously in this life and previous lifetimes. While this may sound unfair in that we need to experience the results of something that we do not remember doing, this is the way samsara exists. They only way to be free of this type of suffering is to attain enlightenment, the state of a Buddha. That being said, we all need help in our daily life, and that is where deity practice can help us.

    In order to overcome the pain you are going through, may I suggest that you engage in the Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa.     Lama Tsongkhapa is the emanation of Manjushri, the Buddha of wisdom; Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion; and Vajrapani, the Buddha of skilful means. As such the practice is extremely powerful and is well-known to help people heal psychical pain, but more importantly the sufferings felt in the mind. You can concentrate on the recitation of the Mig Tse Ma mantra and beseech Lama Tsongkhapa to help ease your suffering. He will surely help. His practice is known for relieving anxiety and even depression.

    In regards to your friend, on a practical level you can research about your friend’s specific state and see if there are any treatments available that can be effective if you have not done so already. In any case what you can do is to engage in prayers or pujas and dedicate the merits generated to your friend.     Another method that you can use to help your friend is to generate as much merit for her as possible. A vast amount of merit and purification of karma can help even the direst of circumstances. Such activities could involve releasing animals from slaughter or deplorable conditions, feeding the homeless and less fortunate and providing for them, and making vast amounts of offerings to the Buddhas and enlightened beings. If done with a good motivation, and dedicated towards your friend, she will benefit from the virtuous actions, even if you cannot see the benefits at the moment.

    Coupled with this you can engage in the practice of a Dharma protector such as a Dorje Shugden. I have been practising chakrasamvara for over 2 years now and recently during my meditation I feel that during the deity meditation portion that it feel like my entire body is under a heavy water fall. My heart and limbs also feel like flowing water and there is some crawling sensations. What could this be

    Thank you for your question. I rejoice to read that you are practising Chakrasamvara for over two years now. This is very good, you should keep the practice steady, keep the vows and commitments well and you will progress on your spiritual evolution.

    Generally speaking when you engage in higher tantric yoga meditation, the meditations include movement of your psychic winds. Therefore sometimes people will experience strange feelings in the body. When this happens, once should ease off the concentration on that particular visualisation when engaging in the practice. What you can do to lessen these feelings is to engage in purification practices such as the 35 Confessional Buddhas, which you can find here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/the-35-confessional-buddhas.html. Alternatively if you have the appropriate initiation, you can engage in the practice of Heruka Vajrasattva, which would be included in your sadhana text. Engaging in the purification practices would lessen these sensations when you practice, as everything we experience is due to our karma.

    What I would advise the most, however, is to consult the guru that gave you the empowerment of Chakrasamvara practice. Your guru would be able to better advise you in addition to the above, the methods you can use to minimise the physical effects if they are due to the actual practice. I hope this helps.

What does violent shaking all of the sudden and "shrinking" feeling of the head mean during practice mean? I've been practicing the dharmapalas, and this is happening. What does it mean?

    Thank you for your question. There could be any number of reasons for this to be occurring. What you can do when this starts to happen is to stop what you are doing, and take deep breaths, and concentrate on your breath. As you concentrate on your breath, this will have a calming effect on both your body and mind, which should stop the involuntary shaking and strange feelings. In fact focusing on the breath is one of the best known methods of developing a focused, concentrated, yet calm

    Your practice of the Dharmapalas should begin with either Guru Yoga or deity practice, therefore I would suggest that you engage in these practices more before you begin the actually Dharma protector practice. One of the best practices is the Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa. This practice is well known for its healing ability on for both the body and the mind. Over time, you should see such occurrences lessen.

    If this shaking happens regularly and also when you are not practicing, you should consider visiting a qualified health professional just to rule out anything untoward. I hope this helps.

Dear pastors,

When reciting mantras we are instructed to visualize the deity. However I realize that my visualization is very very fuzzy and very very ever-changing. It is not a still image, there is like thick clouds moving and blocking the visualization then they would clear and block again and clear again and the deity would even change shape. The round part would be more oval one moment and more circle the next etc.

In fact, I don't even know if the picture that ends up appearing in my mind is really looking like the deity or not.

What if I end up visualizing a monster without knowing it since it's so fuzzy? Is there danger if that happens? What do you advice me to do?

    Dear John,

    Thank you for your question. This is a question that people actually ask a lot, but there is no need to worry, especially if we do not have tantric initiation. In fact, the more we practice getting our visualisation stabilised now, the better we will be able to practice tantra when we eventually receive tantric initiation.

    The issue you are having maintain a steady visualisation is not an uncommon one. This is because we actually have to train our mind to concentrate on what we are doing. One of the major facets of Buddhist meditation is concentration, and this is something we need to develop. We might think that we have a good ability to concentrate, but what the Buddha and the great masters have taught is that we actually do not, but we can obviously develop it.

    Visualisation itself is a form of concentration meditation, therefore until we achieve a good level of concentration, things like this will happen as we train our minds. What we can do is to focus on a particular aspect of the visualisation, such as the face of the deity, and once that is stable and focused, we can continue onto other parts of the deity’s body, and then the various other aspects of the visualisation. That way, we train ourselves little by little to have a complete visualisation.

    No in regards to your question about their being danger if something goes wrong or if we make a mistake during our visualisation, this cannot be at our stage of practice. This is because the visualisation is engaged in during the mantra recitation section. Mantras themselves are the Buddhas and enlightened beings in the form of sound. Therefore when we recite mantras we are invoking the holy energies of the Buddhas, which naturally guide and protect us from any harm.

    The fact that you are facing this issue is in fact a good sign. It shows that are trying to concentrate on the visualisation, but that your mind has not reached a level of concentration powerful enough to maintain the stability of the visualisation. The antidote to this is simple, keep practising. As you continue to practice, you will notice that your visualisation becomes stronger and stronger.

    If however, you are still worried, you can end your recitation sessions with the prayer dedicated to a Dharma protector to any obstacles, and end with a completion dedication. I hope this helps.

Hi, i would like to ask about jhana which is the last factor of the eightfold path. How is it being practised?

    Dear Wong,

    Thank you for your question. The last factor of the eightfold noble path is called jhana in the Pali language. In the Sanskrit language it is called dyana. This is a state of meditative absorption which culminates in the understanding of emptiness and is the pathway that leads us to attain liberation.

    Generally this state is achieved through the practice of single-pointed concentration meditation. But within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition once you have achieved stabilised single-pointed meditation, you progress onto the path of special insight meditation. It is at this stage, that one is able to concentrate completely on understanding emptiness and therefore attain enlightenment.

    This topic is somewhat outside of the scope of this section of the blog. However, Pabongkha Rinpoche in his excellent Lam Rim text, titled “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand” gives a very concise yet thorough introduction to the topic of meditation. Pabongkha Rinpoche addresses the path to enlightenment, not through the eightfold noble path however, but through the six perfections of a bodhisattva. In essence although on the surface the two ways of structuring the path to enlightenment may seem different, they are actually both the same if one analyses them carefully.

    If you read “Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand” you will understand how the two structures are interlinked if you have an understanding of the eightfold noble path. i have been practicing higher yoga tantra for over two year now and recently i started to get nightmares for three continuous nights now and i think it will continue, What is happening ? did i do something wrong? The first nightmare was me being cut in to numerous pieces , the second was me being visited by a greyish blue female old female ghost with no eyes in eye sockets, and the third was a giant dark brown black centipede encased in a white translucent sac exploding out of my thigh and crawling/ rolling away in to darkness. Im quite worried that i may have done something wrong even though i think i have not.

    Dear Jason,

    Thank you for your question. I am glad to hear that you have been practising Higher Yoga Tantra for over two years. You should keep your samaya with your Guru pure and intact, as well as keeping the vows and commitments that you would have taken during the empowerment into the practice. If you do this then you will see a definite transformation of your mind and circumstances for the better, which is after all what Buddhist practice is all about.

    In regards to your nightmares I do not think that you have done anything wrong per se. In this case it could be due to two possible reasons, the first is that your negative karma is arising in your dreams and the second is that you are being afflicted by a spirit.

    In the first case, when we practice Higher Yoga Tantra properly and sincerely, it purifies a lot of negative karma. As when engaging in any practice that purifies negative karma, this karma can open and manifest under control situations. For example you the karma manifests are nightmares or scary figures or feelings, rather than physically, which would come about through uncontrollable causes and conditions. When karma is purified it manifests in its most mild form, and for you in this case, it could manifest in the form of nightmares. Therefore if we are engaging in powerful practices, or when we concentrate on these practices, such things can occur.

    Some people may find this sort of situation bad. But this is not correct, because due to the nature of samsara, we are affected by karma in some form or another. What matters here is that karma is purified so that we can progress on our spiritual journey. When you face such difficulties, the key here is continue with your practice strongly and not give up. In this manner, the karma which causes such situations to occur is purified quicker and then we are no longer affected by it. Therefore you should wholeheartedly engage in primary sadhana of your meditational deity.

    On the other hand, it could be that you are being affected by a spirit or spirits. In this case there are methods of protection that you can engage in which should be included in your Higher Yoga Tantra practice. If you are unsure of what these could be, please humbly approach your initiating guru for more guidance.

    Another way that can help solve this problem is to engage in the practice of a Dharma protector such as Dorje Shugden. Since you are already practising a Highest Yoga Tantra, you can ask your guru about the particular Dharma protectors associated with the practice. Each of the major tantric practice has certain Dharma protectors associated with it that aid practitioners to clear obstacles and create conducive conditions for practice. You can actually engage in any Dharma protector practice, but it would be best for you to consult your guru as he or she may assign you a specific Dharma protector to practice.

    Whatever the case may be, it comes down to karma. The Higher Yoga Tantra you are practising should include a purification practice such as Vajrasattva. For example if you practice the Heruka Chakrasamvara tantra, and have received the appropriate empowerment, you can practice Heruka Vajrasattva. You then concentrate on the practice of Vajrasattva to purify the negative karma causing the situation, and over time you will see the situation get better. If you are not sure of the purification aspect of your daily practice, you can recite the 35 Confessional Buddhas.

    All of these can help, however I strongly advise you to humbly approach your guru and ask for further advice and instruction, as he or she may assign you other practices or even ask you concentrate on specific sections of the sadhana that they passed to you, to help you overcome these problems. hi pastor, I've been very problematic lately and depressed. My plans seem to be always out of place. I read from an article that some problems are caused by negative karma from the previous and present life. I want to know if there is anything that I can do to drain my negative karma. Im very wary now on my actions to others so not to add to my existing karma.     Thank you for your question. Yes, according to Buddhist thought everything we go through in life is caused by karma. This can be either good or bad, so difficulties we face in life are indeed due to our karma. Now, one thing about karma that people often forget is that it can be purified. There are many methods within Tibetan Buddhism that are used for the purification of karma. In fact all practices necessarily involve the purification of negative karma and the generation of merit.

    The most effective of these are known as purification practices, which have the specific benefits of helping us to purify negative karma which leads to all kinds of problems within in our lives. While it may seem daunting that you have negative karma, you should not be disheartened because negative karma can be overcome by purifying it.

    What you said is right, you should be wary of creating more negative karma. In fact that is one of the main points a Buddhist lives by, which is not creating more negative karma. People often wonder why Buddhists take vows and precepts, this is actually to stop the accumulation of negative karma. For example a Buddhist takes the vow not to kill, this obviously stops the Buddhist from creating the negative karma of killing because they consciously remember that they should not kill in whatever situation they are in. So it is very good that are checking your actions to make sure that you do not add to the negative karma. I hope this helps.

I've noticed that in Nepal, Shugden and his retinue are forms of the worldly protector Za Rahula, or that's what the lamas and sadhanas say. Wouldn't that make Shugden dangerous or wouldn't that make Manjushri a worldly deity or one that is dangerous?

    Dear Nepal,

    Thank you for your question. Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri, that is what the high lamas and masters have taught and explained using Buddhist logic. Dorje Shugden as an enlightened being has been practiced by all major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and was first practiced within the holy Sakya tradition.

    Similarly, Manjushri is an enlightened being. In fact all Tibetan Buddhist schools and Vajrayana traditions, including those in Nepal, say that Manjushri is an enlightened being, the Buddha of wisdom.

    Rahula on the other hand is a worldly deity who was bound by oath to protect Buddhism and Buddhism practitioners. All Tibetan Buddhist schools similarly agree to this point.

    Therefore to equate Dorje Shugden as a form of Za Rahula would logically mean that Manjushri is not a Buddha. This cannot be since hundreds of thousands of holy masters have relied on Manjushri and gained enlightenment through such beliefs and practices associated with Manjushri. Since from a logical perspective this cannot be the case, and Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri, it is safe to say that Dorje Shugden is not a form of Za Rahula.

    Dear Ling,

    Thank you for your question. From a tantric Buddhist perspective our mind rides on the psychic winds within our bodies. Therefore if the psychic winds in our body are agitated our minds will be agitated, if our psychic winds are blocked, we will also have blockages in our minds. Therefore to have a clear mind, which is necessary for the higher meditational practices to be successful, the psychic winds in our body must flow freely.

    For the ordinary level practitioner who does not have control over the psychic winds in the body, practitioners will engage in psychical actions or refrain from physical actions in order to give them more control over these psychic energies. One such way is to carefully control one’s diet and this will obviously involve the pungent foods that you have mentioned. Certain foods affect the psychic winds in different ways. When eaten raw these roots affect the psychic winds in a certain way which makes a person’s mind more prone to anger, and when eaten cooked they affect the mind in a way which can increase one’s desire. In fact, when we are affected too much by an emotion it can have a reverse affect. If we have too much anger for example, the psychic winds can become blocked, and this can lead to a propensity of developing illness. Both of these emotions are hindrances to meditational practices because they can distract from whatever you are concentrating on during the meditation.

    In the Chinese Mahayana tradition and when in strict retreat within Tibetan Buddhism, these foods are avoided for these reasons. Also, when practicing the lower tantras, they are also avoided because a practitioner usually does not have sufficient control of the psychic winds in the body. In Highest Yoga Tantra practices, however, it is not a must to avoid these foods because it is during these practices that you develop great control of the psychic winds within the body.

    For the everyday practitioner when engaged in sadhana and mantra practice, if you have a serious meditational practice then you can avoid these foods. It is a choice that you should make yourself, and not a must if you are not in retreat. In Kechara, when we engage in retreats we do avoid eating these foods, as well as other foods commonly referred to as ‘black foods’. I hope this explanation helps.

Why do we still need to hold memorial prayers such as Jangchub our deceased loved ones after years of their passing? Tibetan Buddhism explained that normally a deceased person will take rebirth after 49 days after their passing,
And some hard core buddhists say we do not burn things offerings as what the Taoists do, but we Tibetan buddhist also have fire puja right ?

    Thank you for your question. You have asked a very intelligent question which means you think about things carefully, which is very good. The Buddha taught that we must not follow a religious path blindly but examine the things we practice.

    Within Buddhism we do not pray to our deceased loved ones because we only pray to and take refuge in the Buddhas who are free from samsara. This is one of the major points in keeping our Buddhist refuge. You are correct that we can hold memorial services/ceremonies for the deceased. However, unlike some other religions we do not pray to the deceased during these rituals. Rather we make offerings and prayers to the Buddhas to generate spiritual merits that are dedicated to our loves ones in which ever form they may have taken rebirth in. Buddhists believe in karma, in essence if you do good actions then good things will happen to you, and if you do bad actions, bad things will happen to you. But there is also merit, which is necessary to gain enlightenment and cannot be used up like karma is. Merit is generated when we make offerings and prayer to the enlightened Buddhas.

    You are correct that 49 days after a person’s passing away, they would have taken rebirth in one of the six realms of existence. As such they are still under the influence of karma and can benefit from spiritual merit. So when we hold these ceremonies and services for the deceased they benefit not because we pray to them, but because we pray and make offerings to the Buddhas to generate merit, which is then dedicated to our loved ones, which benefits them wherever they are.

    Fire pujas are burnt offerings, known as ‘jinsek’ in Tibetan, not to the spirits or the gods but to the enlightened Buddhas. Is the deity Amoghapasha an emanation of Avalokiteshvara?

    The deity Amoghapasha is considered to be an emanation or form of Avalokiteshvara. Just like the various forms of Avolikiteshvara, Amoghapasha also has many forms with a differing number of arms and implements.

    Amoghapasha literally means “he who has an unshakable rope/lasso”. This refers to his compassion which never fails to alleviate sentient beings of their suffering and bring them to enlightenment. One of the most common depictions is of Amoghapasha Lokeshvara, who has eight arms.

    Dear Jack,

    Thank you for your question. I am very happy to hear that you have recently received initiation of Heruka Chakrasamvara. As you your question, the answer is that you have not broken any vows because you are gay.

    Tantric practice transcends desire in all its forms, if you are gay or not, does not actually matter. What actually matters is that you practice Chakrasamvara diligently. At the time you received the initiation, you would have taken certain practice commitments, such as which sadhana to practice on a daily basis and a minimum number of mantras that you should recite every day. You should take these seriously and practice well and you will see results.

    At the same time, you should learn up and adhere to the vows that are a part of the initiation. These include the refuge vows, the bodhisattva vows and the tantric vows. These vows are what stop you from committing negative acts and therefore generating negative karma. Instead you should focus on doing good actions, being compassionate and helping others. This way you generate and develop good karma and spiritual merit that are necessary from the spiritual path to enlightenment.

    Since you have taken initiation, you have a spiritual bond with the teacher who gave you the practice, this person is now your guru. If you have questions regarding the practice, or points to clarify, you should humbly approach this teacher of yours for answers. I hope this helps.

In some translations/transliterations of the Heart Sutra, the mantra at the end is either written "TADYATHA GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SOHA or written as "TADYATHA: (OM) GATE GATE PARAGATE PARASAMGATE BODHI SOHA. My question is why is "Om" omitted or added to the mantra? Is there a reason behind this, and would it apply that reasoning to other sutra mantras like the one from the 29 chapter version of the Golden light sutra? NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA TADYATHA/ KUTI KUTINI/ IMIRITO/ KOSHANI IMIRINI IRI SVAHA? Would it be incorrect to add Om into that mantra?

    Dear Tom,

    Thank you for your questions. Within Tibetan Buddhism you will find many mantras that begin with the syllable ‘om’ or that is it very close to the beginning and end with the syllables ‘soha’. This has to do with their particular meaning.

    The syllable ‘om’ is an invocation to the Buddhas and their sacred energies into our lives, whereas ‘soha’ is a word that can mean ‘grant me’. Therefore, mantras can be seen as an invocation to the divine beings to bring a particular quality into one’s life. That is why mantras have different benefits. In and of themselves mantras invoke the entire energies of the divine beings, but have a particular quality that they can impart to the practitioner at a quicker speed. For example, Manjushri’s mantra is well-known for increasing wisdom, intellect and memory, whereas Chenrezig’s mantra is well-known for developing compassion and subduing anger.

    Another group of syllables found in mantras are ‘om ah hung’. These represent the holy body, speech and mind of the Buddhas that we are seeking to gain ourselves by practicing the Buddhist path. For example you can see these syllables in the mantra of Lord Tsongkhapa: “Om Ah Guru Benza Dhara Sumati Kirti Siddhi Hung Hung”. In some mantras the ‘hung’ syllable can be repeated twice. Other mantras that do not start in this way or include these syllables have their own unique meanings.

    As for your question regarding the omission of the ‘om’ syllable sometimes in translations of the Heart Sutra, this actually depends on the tradition and how it was transmitted down. There is some variation between lineages. In Kechara we follow the lineage as transmitted by His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche, which definitely includes the syllable.

    As for adding the syllable ‘om’ to any mantras, this is not necessary. For example the long Manjushri mantra does not start with an ‘om’. In fact it is not advisable to add syllables into mantras because the power of a mantra flows through the lineage of masters who taught the mantra, all the way back to the source – the enlightened beings. Therefore we should practice the mantras as taught to us and transmitted to us by our gurus. This is because of the blessings of the mantras flow through the unbroken lineage back to the Buddhas.

My question pertains to how a Buddhist should deal with religious solicitation? Such as people coming to your door knocking, and trying to sell their religion. I hate to be rude in any way and I am sure they mean well, but I really don't agree with people coming to your home unannounced and using various conversion tactics. How best should someone respond?

    Dear Brad,

    Thank you for your question. It is the first question I have come across about this topic. If you are able and if it is appropriate you should put up a “no soliciting” sign near your front door. This is an all-round measure to stop unwanted soliciting. Depending on where you live, you can probably find these at your local hardware store.

    If that does not work and people still come to you door, you should try to develop compassion for the people soliciting at your doorstop. As Buddhism teaches we should develop compassion for all beings, and especially if these people get us angry or make us annoyed.

    As taught in the Lam Rim teachings, we one way to develop this is to meditate on how you think about and react to (a) someone you love, (b) someone you dislike, and (c) someone who is a complete stranger. Then you switch their roles until you develop equanimity between them. In this way, you stop having thoughts that are extreme either way.

    Coupled with this, you should think that these people are following their own religion in the way they know how to do. You are following your own religion. You should be respectful of their religion even if they are trying to convert you. To do this, you must develop a strong grounding and faith in your own religion. Through this you will realise that suffering exists on many levels, and it leads people to react in different ways. If they continue then you should be cordial in your speech and mannerisms and inform them politely that you are practicing your own religion and happy with what you are practicing. I have been diagnosed with PTSD from being sexually and physically abused as a child. I am in my mid-twenties and unable to work, go to school, or live any semblance of a normal life. I have undergone extreme treatments such as electroconvulsive treatment (70 in 2 years). I took refuge at 16 and became a buddhist and vegetarian. I am poor, but not homeless. I do not have many resources to practice Dharma, aside from my mala. I would like to further my practice to relieve the suffering of others, so no one has to go through what I am going through. What should I do, spiritually, to dedicate my suffering so that it goes toward the better good?

    I am very sorry to read that you have been through so much pain as a child. It must have been very difficult and from what you have said, you are still suffering from its affects. People can be so cruel to inflict this on others and this goes to show how much our negative imprints can cause others pain. One practice that you can engage in to help alleviate your symptoms and one that is considered very effective in dealing with calming the mind is the Guru Yoga of Lama Tsongkhapa. This practice is well known to be extremely effective in helping people cope with difficult situations as Lama Tsongkhapa is the embodiment of the three Buddhas: Manjushri, Chenrezig and Vajrapani. You should engage this practice while continuing your course of treatment as recommended by your healthcare professional. Many people have benefited from the practice in this way. 锦丽在2006年跟友人前往金双威用餐时发现了克切拉佛教中心,之后立即参与了克切拉主办的活动。她更踊跃参与了当时的一千万《缘悲经》念诵闭关。 2006年4月,锦丽遇见了尊贵的詹杜固仁波切,也第一次出席了仁波切的开示,那次的开示让锦丽禁不止流泪。当时的她并不明白自己哭泣的原因,直到后来她才明白那是因为自己终于找到了完美的上师,而仁波切慈悲地以身示教的弘法方式更是深深感动了她。

锦丽在2009年加入克切拉佛教中心成为全职职工,负责内部事务。目前,她是克切拉佛教中心其中一位前台服务经理,主要驻派在彭亨文冬的禅修林。此外,她也在星期天的佛法班授课,并经常作为詹杜固仁波切博客聊天室的协调员。

仁波切的许多教诲改变了她生命里的轻重缓急。她在佛法中找到了生命的目标,也意识到只有跟随佛陀的慈悲和智慧之道,才是克服痛苦和愤怒的方法。 这个领悟让她提出了出家的请求。

锦丽目前是一位佛教讲法师,将来会出家为僧尼。她将专注于透过佛法分享、辅导、法会和其他佛教服务,给每一个走入克切拉的人指引和帮助。她希望能藉由协助弘扬宗喀巴大师的殊胜法教及启发别人踏上灵修之路来报答上师的恩惠。

罗胜彪讲法师(即将出家)

罗胜彪决心协助仁波切弘扬佛法,带着这个坚定的决心,罗胜彪放弃到剑桥大学继续研读博士学位(他当时已获录取)的机会,也辞去了研究工作,全职协助仁波切从事佛法事业,至今从不言悔。

罗胜彪于2001年初遇尊贵的詹杜固仁波切时,并没想过自己会全心全意投入佛法事业。那一年,工程系硕士学位毕业的他正在新加坡从事工程研究工作。然而,仁波切的开示让他留下非常深刻的印象。跟仁波切有过几次接触之后,罗胜彪开始为仁波切和克切拉架设网站。

罗胜彪虽是理科班出生,却深感人生有许多疑问是科学无法圆满解答的。与此同时,他也发现任凭科学技术再怎么发达,也不能真正解决人类所面对的难题,因为今天科技发达,生活水准比起几千年前高出许多,但是人类仍然面对着同样的问题,我们也不见得过得比古人幸福快乐。

在接触仁波切之后,罗胜彪很快就意识到佛法是解决这些问题的究竟方案,而仁波切采用的方法也非常适合现代社会。因此,罗胜彪决心协助仁波切弘扬佛法,带着这个坚定的决心,罗胜彪放弃到剑桥大学继续研读博士学位(他当时已获录取)的机会,也辞去了研究工作,全职协助仁波切从事佛法事业,至今从不言悔。

对罗胜彪而言,遇见仁波切是个全新的人生经历。仁波切让他看到了佛法可以在跳出传统框架的同时,依然保留其精髓。因为身为仁波切的私人助理,罗胜彪有过许多不可思议的经历。他自认非常幸运,能亲眼见证仁波切无论在法座上或生活中,都把佛法化为具体的行动。这些经验在在考验他,挑战他每时每刻都修持佛法。透过这个方式,仁波切成功地剔除他既往偏重佛法仪式的陈腐思维模式。

罗胜彪因亲见仁波切以身示法,所以深信要让心识提升至更高层次,进而获得证悟是绝对可能的。这种种因素促使罗胜彪再踏出一步,受任成为讲法师,好让自己能更有效地弘扬佛法和利益众生。

郭月谊讲法师

个性内向的郭月谊,凭着勇气和决心,将本身的弱点转为优点,还一一将曾经的不可能都化为可能。

郭月谊从9岁起就必须学会独立,年幼的她必须一边上学,一边还要打工赚钱养家。她个性内向,不善于表达自己的想法,朋友也不多,所以她在毕业后加入报馆成为记者,让许多认识她的人大跌眼镜。

郭月谊在光明日报和南洋商报任职期间,曾因表现优异而获奖。写作让她找到了一个抒发感受和想法的管道,而她的文章也为她吸引了一众读者。然而,这一切都不能带给月谊真正的满足。短暂的快乐并不是她所要的——成功、金钱、关系和名誉并不是快乐的关键。

在寻找快乐的过程中,月谊遇见了尊贵的詹杜固仁波切。仁波切告诉她“不要以言语来反驳他人,反而应利用文字来好好表达自己。”这促使她加入克切拉媒体出版社成为撰稿人,后升任为资深编辑,同时也是詹杜固仁波切的其中一位协调助理。

郭月谊目前是克切拉佛教中心的主席,也是首席讲法师,除了讲法师的日常事务如辅导、法会、讲课之余,她也必须管理和安排克切拉佛教中心和讲法师团体中的各种大小事务。这些年在克切拉的所学和经历,让她拥有一个更宽容和开放的胸襟,使她更懂得安抚和辅导那些有需要的人。而她后期培养出的讲课和栽培新人的能力,也给许多人带来了希望。

凭着勇气和决心,郭月谊将本身的弱点转为优点,一一将曾经的不可能都化为可能。

谢晓晶讲法师

担任讲法师职位长达一年后,谢晓晶决定更新戒誓,继续扛起讲法师的责任。

谢晓晶在1999年毕业于广州暨南大学,持有内外全科医学学士学位。之后,她在吉隆坡一间中医学院兼任讲授西方医学的讲师多年。

一直以来,虽然谢晓晶表面上看似一位无神论者,但是潜意识里却不断寻找一位可回答她深藏在内心疑问的精神导师。这些得不到解答的疑问曾在大学时期导致她陷入忧郁状态。为此,谢晓晶经常透过阅读哲学书籍,以期能得到问题的解答。

2007年,谢晓晶经由她十年好友郭月谊讲法师的介绍,初次来到了克切拉。 谢晓晶对完全没有信仰的老友月谊讲法师的彻底改变感到非常惊讶和好奇。在一次偶然的机会下,谢晓晶阅读了克切拉媒体(简称:克媒)出版社的《贪得无厌》。起初,她惯性地以怀疑的态度阅读,试图找出书中谬误之处。然而, 这一次她不仅找不到漏洞,反而对书中逻辑条理分明的解释留下深刻的印象。

2009年3月,谢晓晶加入克媒兼任中文翻译和抄录工作。翌年,她慎重考虑未来的事业方向,思考如何在医学和佛法事业中做出取舍。最终,她选择了佛法事业。谢晓晶领悟到两者虽然同为救济职业,但她相信佛法事业能更深入地利益一切有情。

担任讲法师职位长达一年后,谢晓晶决定更新戒誓,继续扛起讲法师的责任。

林汉妮讲法师

在亲眼目睹尊贵的詹杜固仁波切如何协助她的母亲得到临终前的平静后,林汉妮才意识到自己也希望以佛法来触动他人。

林汉妮是一位退休中学校长,持有莱切斯特大学教育硕士学位,从事教育工作长达30年后于2001年底退休。工作以外,她也是两名孩子的母亲。

在完成硕士学位后,林汉妮考虑继续考取教育博士学位,或打算在退休之后好好去旅游和探望亲友。与此同时,她也在寻找灵修上的方向。因此,林汉妮开始探讨上座部和中国大乘佛教的教义,以期能找到人生的答案。

2004年12月,林汉妮参加了尊贵的格列仁波切举办的《菩提道次第》及白度母闭关。在闭关期间,林汉妮发现自己的问题逐渐有了答案。然后,在 2005年6月,她在姐姐的介绍下来到克切拉,也因此遇见了她的精神导师尊贵的詹杜固仁波切。詹杜固仁波切最近劝告她必须为了众生的利益全神投入佛法事业。

虽然林汉妮有接近二十年的校园辅导经验,但直到亲眼目睹尊贵的詹杜固仁波切如何协助她的母亲得到临终前的平静后,林汉妮才意识到自己也希望以佛法来触动他人。

目前,林汉妮除了是克切拉法会小组成员,在克切拉祈愿堂进行赞助法会以外,还是克切拉教育小组的成员,专注于编著教育内容。此外,林汉妮也是詹杜固仁波切博客的每周“克切拉聊天室小组”成员之一。

黎国圆讲法师

在2014年,黎国圆本着想要帮助更多人的心愿,决定受戒成为佛教讲法师,继续为克切拉团体提供一切与佛法相关的服务。

黎国圆跟随尊贵的詹杜固仁波切学法长达10余年,属于克切拉初创时期的成员之一。他于2005年加入克切拉天堂文物中心成为全职员工,后来也曾陆续在克切拉团体的其他部门服务。

打从一开始,詹杜固仁波切就鼓励黎国圆投入写作工作。在克服了种种障碍后,黎国圆终于展开写作生涯,并在2009年推出他的第一本著作和自传《There’ s No Way But Up》(不进则退)。这本书记述了他自幼的灵修旅程,直到他遇见根本上师――尊贵的詹杜固仁波切的种种经历。

世界各地读者对“There’ s No Way But Up”一书的热烈反应推动黎国圆继续撰写其他著作,包括尼泊尔朝圣指南《Vajrayogini and other Power Places in Nepal》(金刚瑜伽母及尼泊尔其他圣地)、短篇故事集《Tales My Lama Told Me》(上师告诉我的那些传说)以及关于情感关系的《Conversations in Love》(亲密对话)。这些著作给许多人带来启发,也将无数人带向佛法的殿堂。

除了写作,黎国圆自从在克切拉天堂工作的时期开始,就非常热衷于跟他人分享佛法。这些年来,黎国圆从詹杜固仁波切那里接受了无数宝贵的教诲,内容涵盖詹杜固仁波切的公开开示以及仁波切给黎国圆的个人指示和忠告。在大家的印象中,黎国圆一直都是个十分热衷于分享佛法的人。无论他到哪儿去,遇见什么人,他都会热情地与他人分享佛法。在2014年,黎国圆本着想要帮助更多人的心愿,决定受戒成为佛教讲法师,继续为克切拉团体提供一切与佛法相关的服务。

黄松发讲法师

跟随仁波切学法多年之后,黄松发深明讲法师在克切拉团体扮演的重要角色,因此他希望自己也能成为一名讲法师,以进一步为仁波切、克切拉及社会大众服务。

黄松发于1952年出生在马来西亚槟城州。1969年中五毕业后,他南下吉隆坡寻找就业机会。多年来他从事过各种不同的行业,也曾面对失业的窘境。就在1997至1998年期间,正在待业的他受邀到表妹林秀月家中(现为拿督林秀月)参加詹杜固仁波切的佛法开示。第一次的会面,就让他对詹杜固仁波切深入浅出的教法留下了十分深刻的印象。

在仁波切慈悲的开示和引导下,黄松发两夫妻进行了他们首次的闭关修行。他和妻子李淑芳也在仁波切的建议下开始经营小生意,并在很短的时间内就盈利。几年后,克切拉佛教中心正式成立,仁波切开始遴选弟子担任协调助理,而黄松发和拿督林秀月就在那时候毛遂自荐担起这项任务。后来,随着越来越多弟子加入协调助理的阵容,克切拉协调助理理事会也跟着正式成立。今天,协调助理理事会虽已改名为董事会,黄松发却依旧是其中一员。

黄松发目前的职务为克切拉禅修林工程总监,主要负责监督禅修林大小项目的建设以及确保工程能如期完工。在这之前,他曾担任克切拉天堂文物中心部门主管长达10年。此外,黄松发也是克切拉团体多个部门的总监,并曾在2012至2013年期间受委为克切拉佛教中心副主席。

跟随仁波切学法多年之后,黄松发深明讲法师在克切拉团体扮演的重要角色,因此他希望自己也能成为一名讲法师,以进一步为仁波切、克切拉及社会大众服务。黄松发计划在晚年出家为僧,而担任讲法师一职正有助于他朝这个目标前进。黄松发深信:当一个人的年纪越大,就越应该为死亡的逼近做好准备。他认为能身着僧袍在克切拉禅修林迎接死亡是生命最美丽的终结。然而,在那一刻到来之前,黄松发希望自己能继续竭尽所能为克切拉禅修林、社区和前来禅修林的每一个人服务。当体力再也无法负荷的时候,他会请求仁波切允许他在克切拉禅修林投入闭关。

林秀云讲法师

如今,秀云最渴望的是把自己的余生都投入佛法工作和修行,从而利益更多人。

在投入佛法工作前,秀云是一位空闲的家庭主妇。20年前,她有幸遇见了尊贵的詹杜固仁波切和前往甘丹寺朝圣。这一个星期的朝圣之旅改变了她的人生观,让她觉悟到人生除了吃喝、逛街和玩乐,还有其他更有意义的事。她喜欢仁波切的佛法开示,因为那不但符合逻辑和实践性强,且还特别强调利益他人的重要性。仁波切让佛法显得浅显易懂,而他一直以来的忠告总是“改变内在,而非外在”。

实修佛法多年之后,林秀云于2009年决定在本身居住的槟城设立佛教文物中心,以期跟更多人结下佛缘。她知道仁波切的佛法教诲十分实用,十分适合现代人,而仁波切佛法事业也能利惠许多人,所以她希望跟更多人分享仁波切的教诲,也希望能借此来回报仁波切多年来对她的恩惠和指导。今天,位于槟城的克切拉天堂不仅仅是一间文物店,还是一个主办佛法分享会、法会和放生活动的地方。

2010年,同样也是在仁波切的加持下,秀云在槟城设立了克切拉香积厨活动中心,秉持仁波切强调“以行动展现慈悲”的精神,积极为减轻流浪汉和贫困家庭的苦痛出一份力。槟城克切拉香积厨除了每周四次的派饭行动,也每月一次为赤贫家庭提供基本食粮。

如今,秀云最渴望的是,用自己的余生投入佛法工作和修行,从而利益更多人。

利荣讲法师

利荣于2008年加入克切拉天堂文物中心成为兼职员工。然而,在对仁波切和克切拉事业有了进一步的了解之后,仁波切的慈悲深深触动了他。与此同时,他也意识到这份工作让他的生命更具意义,因此毅然全职加入克切拉团体。

作为克切拉天堂的业务执行员,让利荣有机会从仁波切的教诲中学习到更多佛法。这些佛法智慧让他能够帮助那些走入文物中心的人们解决各种问题,从而改善他们的生命。

这些经历让利荣很快地就决定跟随仁波切的步伐,并在2016年受戒成为讲法师,进一步以佛法来服务和造福他人。

It\'s very nice to see volunteers helping maintain holy sites in Kechara Forest Retreat, it\'s very good for them. Cleaning Buddha statues is a very powerful and effective way of purifying body karma.
