I didn’t know about this place at all. We found this place by total accident and glad we did.
Huge statue of Luang Phor Thuad/Long Por Thuat (龙普托) in Thailand, along the way from Bangkok to Wat Muang in Ang Thong Province. I was amazed when I looked out the car window to see such a magnificent image of a holy monk. It is huge and very blessed to see.
Thailand is like Tibet where they revere the sangha very much. They create large images of special sangha that have shown exceptional ability. It’s like in Tibet huge images of the blessed monk Tsongkapa is created everywhere. There are huge and beautiful statues of Tsongkapa all over Tibet and Mongolia. Many have experienced miracles, blessings or at least a sense of peace in the presence of these Tsongkapas just like I did in front of Luang Phor Thuad’s statue.
I wanted so much to share this with everyone. Beautiful, holy, sacred and meaningful.
I had to bring our group to see this image after our visit to Wat Muang Temple and take a few pictures.We did some prayers and really felt happy to see this holy monk image.
Take a good look and in the future, do visit this holy image to make offerings in person.
Tsem Rinpoche
Luang Phor Thuad was born in B.E 2125 (1582) in Suan Chan Village, Chumphol Dustrict, Sathing Phra in Songkla (Southern Thailand). His parent was Khun Hu and Mae Chan, a poor couple living in the place of Shrentthi Pan, the wealthy landlord. His parents name their child as “Pu” (meaning crab).
When Pu (Luang Phor Thuad) was less than 6 months old, he was placed in a towel under a shady tree near the padi field while his mother was working.At noon she ceased work for a time in order to breast-feed him. As she walked towards the baby, she saw a huge python twine round him.She alarmed for help. The neighbours quickly gathered knives, axes and clubs and came round. The python was stern and motionless. The people around did not know what to do. No one dared to start the attack and suddenly,his mother gets an idea. With the old belief that this snake might be the god created vision. She quickly plucked seven wild flowers of different colours, put then on a leaf which served as a plate, knelt down, closed her eyes, and prayed earnestly.The python spit out a crystal ball on the baby’s chest and left out soon. It was a brilliant crystal ball.Many people gathered round to have a look at it. His mother then kept the gem and brought him home.
A rich man offered a very good price for the crystal ball, but his mother did not wish to sell it. The rich man forced her. At last she presented it to him. The rich man was happy but for only a while. Within three days, all members in his family fell ill. He consulted a medium and was told that he had kept something which did not belong to him by right. Only the baby boy could own it.The rich man was frightened and returned the crystal ball to the baby’s mother. Within 3 months, money poured in like water. His parents became very rich. The neighbours were jealous. They stole the crystal ball. They were chased by the python till they threw it into a pit. Later a deity revealed the whereabouts of the crystal ball to his parents in their dreams, thus the precious crystal ball was recovered. His parents became more devoted to the Buddha. They generously helped the poor, made offerings to the Sangha (Monk) and built temples.
Luang Phor Thuad began to learn about the Buddhist teaching in a temple nearby at the age of 5 years old. Rather talented as he was, he mastered all subjects his teacher could guide him within a year. He went to other temples over the hill and across the jungle to acquire further teaching every day. He became a monk at the age of 12 years old and devoted a full time study in the Dharma. His father passed away at the age of 72 years old when he was 30 years old. In order to further the studies in Buddhism, he left his mother and went to other province.
From the present location, Wat Pakok, Singora, Thailand, Luang Phor Thuad took a boat sailing northward to Ayuthaya province (former capital of Thailand). After sailing for half a day, the boat met with great storms. The boat was jolted and the passengers were frightened. The boat did not arrive at its destination after drifting for several days. The store of drinking water ran short. The boatmen gathered that their previous voyages had all been very smooth.The catastrophe might have been caused by the presence of the monks. They planned to push him into the sea. He could sense their intention. He consoled them that they needed not worry about drinking water as there was plentiful around. He stretched his leg out of the boat, the storm was pacified. With his leg, he drew a circle on the sea and told the boatmen to draw water within the circle for drinking.
The boatmen were angry at first as they did not believe that the sea water could be used for drinking. After his assurance they made a try and found that it was actually drinkable. One purposely tasted the water outside the circle and shouted that it was salty.The boatmen were amazed and did not take further steps to harm Luang Phor Thuad.
On the next day, the boat arrived at the Ayuthaya province. Luang Phor Thuad walked for a few miles and was happy to see a stately temple in front of him.The monks in the temple refused to accept him as he was poorly clad. He turned to an old temple not very far away. The old keeper welcomed him and offered him board and lodging. He stayed there to study the scripture, to pay homage to the Buddha and to practised meditation for half a year.
The ruler of a neighbouring country,King of Sri Lanka sent seven monks to Ayuthaya province to test the achievements of the monks in Thailand. They brought with them 12 bowls containing 84,000 words. These words were to be arranged into a certain sutra within 1 week. If the task was accomplished, King of Sri Lanka will prepare to present Thailand with seven boats made of gold. Should the task be a failure, Thailand should surrender their sovereignty to their country. The Thai King gathered all well-known learned monks to tackle the problem. Many tried but were not successful.
Announcement was made by the court to look for someone capable of dealing with the task. On the fourth night the King dreamed of a white elephant trumpeting in dazzling light. He consulted a fortune-teller and was told that it was a good sign as a sage was likely to appear to solve the problem. The King was uncertain. On the sixth day, Luang Phor Thuad left the temple in the morning to beg for food. He arrived at a rich man’s house. The people were discussing about that very serious topic. They saw him holding a bowl standing in front of their doors. The host reverently offered him food. He sensed that the monk in front was rather extraordinary in appearance. He paid Luang Phor Thuat due respect and told the latter that their country reputed for their Buddhist studies would be put to shame if no one could meet the challenge put forward by the neighbouring land and asked whether the latter could help in that matter. Luang Phor Thuad replied that he would try. The host was very happy. He intended to invite Luang Phor Thuat to see the King immediately. Luang Phor Thuad told him not to be hurry and would go the next morning.
After Luang Phor Thuat had left, the host broke the news to the King. On the next morning, the King sent a special carriage to bring Luang Phor Thuat to the palace. On arrival he was escorted by the officials to the entrance. The steps with loud noises as Luang Phor Thuat walked on them barefooted. The King and the officials were all very quiet. About half an hour later the monks from the neighbouring country came in. After exchanging greetings, Luang Phor Thuad began to arrange the words. 12 bowls of words were poured on the table. He closed his eyes and arranged them with both hands. About a quarter of an hour later, he announced that 5 words were missing.
Those 7 monks remained in silence. He then warned that anyone did not quickly take out those missing words would die of cracking skull. The culprit was frightened and took out those missing words. With his eyes closed Luang Phor Thuad exercised the supernormal power to arrange the words. The sutra was completed in a little while. Seeing that Thailand was invincible, those seven monks presented those 7 boats made of gold and left.Thus Luang Phor Thuad’s name was well-known throughout the country. He was looked upon as a saintly Buddhist monk in Thai history.
Luang Phor Thuad remained in the capital city for a few years until be was informed of his mother’s serious illness. He rushed southwards and not long after his mother died at the age of 78 years old. After the funeral he stayed back in Singora, Thailand.
A state governor from the south by the surname of Phang, a man with a comparatively dark countenance, wished to build a Buddhist temple. He came to Singora to look for a distinguished monk to head the project. One evening after sunset, he saw an old monk stroll along the seaside, leaving behind a trail of light. He knew that was the right person to approach. He stepped forward to pay due respect to the monk and told the monk his intention of building a temple in Pattani. Luang Phor Thuad already knew the matter through his psychic power. He consented and went with the governor Phang to Pattani. When the construction was completed, the temple was named Wat ChangHai. Luang Phor Thuad was abbot to this temple till he passed away at the age of 120 years old.
For over three hundred years Luang Phor Thuat has been exercising his power to help people in danger and accidents. His images were highly esteemed for their supernormal power.
The image may protect the bearer from the disturbance by demons and relieve sufferings of a patient. Its effect in preventing accidents is especially noted.

The Wat Huay Mongkol is famous for its enormous statue of one of Thailand’s most famous monks, named Luang Phor Thuad. The statue of this renowned monk is the largest of its kind in the world. The statue, w is about 12 meters tall and 10 meters wide, is set on a large mound and can be seen from far away distance. A peaceful and serene place worth visiting, and is very popular with tourist and even the local people from all over the country. Luang Phor Thuad the monk had lived 400 years ago in Southern Thailand , famous all over the country for the miracles that he had performed. Amazing , it seem was that he did turned salt water into fresh, drinkable water on multiple occasions. Many locals do believe that amulets created in the image of Luang Phor Thuad hold great protective powers. They considered the amulets very powerful and priceless. Interesting read. Have not visited this place yet , wish to in future.

Thailand is a land of beautiful Buddha Statues and temples. Everywhere one visited there are always beautiful temples . Most of the people there are of Buddhism faith. Hence its not surprised they even built huge statue of a special sangha that have shown exceptional ability. Well this huge statue of Luang Phor Thuad/Long Por Thuat was built as to commemorate a famous sangha . He was well known with the common folk for his legendary powers. There were many interesting miracles happened around this sangha as a child and later where ever he went. For over three hundred years, even though he had passed away yet he still exercised his power to help people in danger and accidents with his famous amulets. Its blessing for anyone to have his amulet.
Would love to visit this huge statue of Luang Phor Thuad/Long Por Thuat one day.

I feel blessed after seeing Luang Phor Thuad statue. In Thailand, I can see many Buddha and eminent monk statue around Thailand especially at suburban area.Thai people pay very high respect to monk. This can be seen on the food offerings to monk in the early morning 6am at Khao San Road. I really love to see Buddha and monk statue.

The story behind this statue is really fascinating and intresting. It’s fascinating because the myth and history was so deep, there were details in what the monks did with what the monks presented to the statue. This is also intresting because the Luang Phor Thuat has been exercising his power to help people in danger and accidents. And I find that this has a great meaning to it.
Love to hear more stories about Luang Pu Tuad. I have a Statute of His Holiness in mt house.
It is truly extraordinary that a huge statue of a monk is found in the middle of ‘nowhere’.It is the statue of a famous Thai monk. Luang Phor Thuad was born into a very poor family, who were too poor even to give him an education. Yet, the seed must have been planted in a previous life, for the circumstances surrounding him to change so dramatically, with the appearance of a python, who spewed out a precious jewel that brought wealth and changed the course of Luang Phor Thuad’s life.
From a young age, he was already drawn to Buddhism. He became a monk at the age of 12. He went on to perform great deeds , including making a sutra out of 84000 letters which saved the country from falling into the hands of a neighbour.
His extraordinary powers came from a good heart and a heart of deep renunciation. Being a Sangha, he helped preserved the Buddha’s teachings. His power of blessing was so great that amulets of him were efficacious in healing, blessing and protecting. His blessings have reached out to many as far as northern Malaysia, judging from several comments posted.
Luang Phor Thuad is indeed a great sangha.
We kind of saw the statue form the highway and went to investigate. We are blessed to know this great Buddhist master.

It is said that Luang Phor Thuad was a legendary southern Thai monk, immensely popular with the southern thais. Many miracles have said to be performed or associated with him. The big statue was commissioned by Queen Sirikit of Thailand at Wat Huay Mongkol. Many people in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia believe that armulets ceated in this vicinct had great protection power against fatal automobile accidents and it is said that the abbot of Wat Chong Hai is the pioneer creator of these sacred armulets!
I enjoy looking at Buddha statues and images now more than ever since I have learnt Dharma from Rinpoche and Kechara. Whether if the Buddha’s form is wrathful or serene, exotic or simple, all Buddhas give me a peace of mind whenever I see them. As Rinpoche said, all Buddhas ultimately lead us to enlightenment.
But I would love to visit Luang Phor Thuad statue one day!
Wow! Luang Phor Thuad was such an acclaimed monk. It was so cool how he managed to decipher the text and even found 7 missing words whilst his eyes were closed. The statue of him is huge! Must’ve been a real sight to see and visit. Its wonderful how enormous the statue of Luang Phor Thuad is and hope that it would bless all those who see it and the land around it and more. The statue of the Sangha is indeed very huge and holy! People there will get a lot of benefit from there, especially the ones who were involved in building the statue. I love the surrounding environment as it’s filled with greens and beautiful sceneries.

I recall having the opportunity and privilege to go visit this holy site whilst in Bangkok a couple of years back. It was through Rinpoche’s kind recommendation that I had even heard of this place.
I recall it was still not quite complete yet as you can see in the photos above. It is quite an impressive site with lakes, and even F&B outlets planned from what I could tell of the construction. I wonder how it is progressing? I tried to look online for any updates but came up blank! 🙁

This statue is so cool! The story of Luang Phor Thuad is very interesting. The next time I go to Thailand, I have to convince my mama to let me see it. I think that there should be more statues like these around the world and I think that Kecharians should make such an image of Rinpoche 😀 It would be amazing!

I love to visit Thailand and I intend to do soon. In fact, I visited these places such as Temple of Dawn in 1978 but then I was ignorant and didnt know much about it. Now I have all the reason to go and revisit these places and with a different view. Thank you very much for this sharing I like to brig my daughter and let that be an eye opener for her too. Thanl you Rinpoche for sharing the story of Luang Phor Thuat. There is also a big statue of Luang Phor Thuat at the Wat Huay Mongkol temple complex located 15 kilometers west of Hua Hin. Many Thais pray to Luang Phor Thuat and fully trust in Him to resolve all their human problems.

We went to Thailand few years ago, and I was attracted by a bronze statut at Amulet’s market in Bagkok and I’ve bought it. It is Luang Phor Thuat’s statut in bronze, but I didn’t know his story. At my home this statut has a special place. Until today I didn’t know that he protects against accident but I truly believe that after reading this. 2 years ago, we almost had a car accident; no one didin’t understand how and why we avoid this accident. Now, I have the answer. This holly Buddhist monk was around us. From now and until the end of my life, I will pray next to this satut.
Homage to Luang Phor Thuad! The story of his bio is amazing. If it’s from the point of view of Tibetan Buddhism, he must be incarnation of high lama or Bodhisattva.
Only true Buddhist practitioners live their life for others, never complain how others treat them. He is highly knowledgeable to solve the sutra in order to save the country.
May his devotion to Buddhism set a great example for people to study Dharma for others. _/\_
The story of Luang Phor Thuad sounds amazing. I believe he must have been a tulku of very high calibre. I’ve never heard of snakes spitting out crystal balls. Perhaps it’s a naga’s offering to Luang Phor Thuad who’s a very special child. I’m also quite surprised to see such a huge outdoor statue of a monk and not Shakyamuni Buddha in Thailand. I think it’s very unusual. I would visit this temple, the next time I’m in Bangkok.
We saw this huge statue on the highway to Wat Muang. Our group are very fortunate to visit holy site with Rinpoche.
In Wat Muang, they have a shrine for their Abbot who built the temple. In the same area, they built a huge statue of Guru in this case Luang Phor Thuad. This tradition of building Guru statue is same as Tibetan.
We took picture there with Rinpoche and make a prayer in future we will able to built huge statue of our lineage master, so that we will be able to be close to meet a Guru and practice Dharma life after life.

I have a statue of Luang Phor Thuat at home on my alter.I do not know much about Luang Phor Thuat neither does my Mom. I was only told to pray to Luang Phor Thuat for safety and protection.How ignorant I am not to know the inspiring story of such a holy monk.

These kinds of stories are great. Then the statue representing them. Can’t really grasp how large it is or the impact of running into such a statue. The only “large things” in America are billboards. On the rural highways sometimes a person writes something on the roof of their house, like a tribute to their dog, and it takes you out of the normal sphere of things. Even the large Christian churches are nice. Imagine a giant statue of a famous monk, with a story behind it?
LP Thuad is highly revered by Malaysian as well. Many northern states Buddhist will put LP Thuad amulet on their children as to protect them. My mum gave me one of the Wat Pak Kow consecrated LP Thuad when I was in kindergarten. I ve kept it until today as to remember how my mom took care of me when I was young and now it is time for her child who grown up to take care of the aging mother.

I remembered when I was young, we had a photo and a statue of Lung Phor Thuad on our altar and my parents would pray daily to Lung Phor Thuad. On special occasions, my parents would buy thin gold foil and stick on to the statue. Before sitting for exams or going for a job interview, my parents would always advise me to pray to Lung Phor Thuad which I did even though I do not know much about this great monk but out of respect for my parents. It is through Rinpoche’s kindness again for sharing this article with us that I have gained so much information on this great monk. Thank you!
AppreciatingBrancussi? The most reality is often not what is most manifest. The bigger the statue, the more we can realize there’se no use in searching outside what is within….that is why people find calm in watching the sea. A bigger statue then the sea is not there. On the floating market there was this Madonna-with-child A green Buddha statue and in the evening when looking up to the stars, we realized that all over the world people had in fact the same shrine up in the sky, with all the stars as statues of the Gods….Bara Berechit Elohim it means The beginning Created many Gods …

Here is a statue in words it is Zen-statue I hope AllYou like it You know in Zen the man goes find the bull and then put on a halter and the animal becomes quiet and in the and he can ride on his back, while reading a holy scripture, or plying a flute, and the animal brings him savely home. Many statues like that , very well known.

The horse Sacrifize became a lucky-born
The sand turned into a lake
In which Sacrifize disappeared
It’s memory called: set me free
The waters mirror: come to me

It’s light strange unshore
It wanted to wait and waited
For thousand years, or even more
Then, dusty from a long travel
Thirsty for another level
The bird Experience flew out of the sky
Tangled through thousand times
And willing to tell
Touched it the water
Had flewn right into the well
There down by the lake
when it drunk of the water
The bird Experience altered into a man
When he looked into the mirror
He saw his memory, and took a dive
Then Sacrfize, recognizing it’s history
Was shaken back to life
The man swam to the bottom
And touched the Holy Sand
The horse Awakened One then humbly
Kneeled before it’s Master, who took His seat
And to the lake ofcourse of darkness
the final End.
Dear Rinpoche, seeing the Holy image of Lung Phor Thuad is a blessing knowing of the things achieve by such a holy Sangha. the story of Lung Phor Thuad is very interesting.The Statue of Lung Phor Thuad looks very real, it will be in my list of must visit if i ever to travel and visit Thailand in the future and make offering.
i am very excited to know that Rinpoche has plan to make a large statue of Zong Rinpoche and Trijang Rinpoche in the future, it will be a blessing to many.

On the way to Wat Muang Temple to visit the 300 ft Buddha statue in the fields we came across this…This holy image is 1.5 hours drive from Bangkok city itself.
