Question asked by Malshan Wicramaratne
Does belonging to a particular tradition (for instance Nyingmapa) mean that a follower or ordained person cannot attend the Gelug disciplines and practices,If is there a need to necessarily start over again the Ngodro practices and related disciplines if the school is changed for instance a transformation from Nyingmapa to Gelugpa?
Dear Maishan Wicramaratne,
When one already belongs to a tradition and is following a guru in that tradition, it is only appropriate to ask for permission if there is a good reason for the person to “attend” another tradition’s disciplines and practices. There is a danger in changing traditions because it leads to confusion in the student’s mind. Confusion arises when the student is faced with different methods and approaches in the teaching and diffusion of dharma.
