Question asked by S.
I have a few questions on lay precepts because I've been considering taking them. About the first precept to not kill, I have a garden to grow plants to eat (I'm vegetarian) and so some insects get inevitably killed in the process: is it violation of the precept? I think it is, so is there a way to make this karma less heavy? When we download files from the internet, I speak of music, movies or software in general, can it be considered a form of stealing and so a violation of the second precept? I think people who do it for money gain are definitely stealing, but what about personal or private use? Is it stealing too or motivation has to be considered? Thanks!

Wesak Day in Malaysia where Buddhists nationwide gather at temples . Each of different Buddhist temples celebrated at dawn with various pujas or prayers, meditation, with offerings of flowers, candles and incense ,emphasizing the impermanence of life. Most temples do rituals “Bathing the Buddha” ceremony to wash away bad karma and grand candlelight processions in Penang and Kuala Lumpur. At our Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong Pahang, we have pujas, flowers, candles and incense offerings as well.
