20 Ultimate Health Benefits Of Guava
by Dr Janardhana Hebbar
Guavas are plants in the Myrtle family (Myrtaceae) genus Psidium. Health Benefits of Guava include eye care, brain health, immunity booster, cancer cure, skin care and many more.
The term “guava” appears to derive from the Arawak (indigenous peoples of the Caribbean) guayabo “guava tree”, via the Spanish guayaba. Another term for guavas is pera, derived from pear derived from Spanish or Portuguese common to regions around the western Indian Ocean. Amrood is another term used in Indian subcontinent and Middle East, possibly deriving from armoot meaning “pear” in Arabic and Turkish languages. In Egypt, it is called gawafa.
Classified as a berry by most botanists, each guava berry is covered by a rough green rind that turns yellow when ripe. The pulp inside occurs in colors of white, pink, or red with numerous tiny, semi-hard edible seeds, concentrated especially at its center. The fruit is soft when ripe with sweet musky aroma and creamy in texture. Ripe fruits have rich flavor with sweet-tart taste.
The early Spanish explorers of the 1500′s found Strawberry Guava, ‘Acca sellowiana O.,’ growing as a native tree in America, where they were firmly established from Mexico southward to Peru. They are native to Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. Guavas are now cultivated and naturalized throughout the tropics and subtropics in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, subtropical regions of North America, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and Spain.

I had no idea that this fruit is actually such a superfruit, it actually has miracle benefits packed into a small vessel of that fruit. We did a YAK Blogchat on this topic actually and it was a good discussion that I enjoyed very much. I took an interest in its brain, immunity system and absorption help. I think I will start adding Guava into my weekly grocery shopping list.

I never thought for a moment that Guavas are actually from America. I always thought of it as an unpopular fruit in Asia as not many people eat it. I am very surprised when I read that it is so well known and they have so many names.
I am also very shock to read that there are so many benefits of eating Guavas. I personally do not like Guavas that much because it’s hard and sometimes bitter. I guess many things that taste bad is actually good for our health, just like bitter gourd I would say.
After reading this article, I feel like Guava is like the most nutritious fruit. The one benefit that caught my attention is that Guavas are also high in antioxidants, not only that it is able to cure cancer, diabetes but it also helps with anti-aging. That is really awesome. When i was reading through the advantages, the thing that stood out to me and really caught by attention was that eating guavas actually cure diabetes. I had no idea that this was possible. I am sure that if i told any of my friends that it cures diabetes they wouldn’t believe me. Who knew a single fruit could have to many benefits?
All these benefits just got me thinking, mother nature provides us with so many natural ways to heal and stay healthy, and yet all we do to mother nature is hurt her. The earth does so much for us, and all we do is damage it with our selfish human needs. This is sad. Lets pray that they future will be better 🙂
Love reading articles that promote great health and wellness! I didn’t know there were so many benefits from consuming a simple and delicious fruit. Looks like my palate choose the right fruit to like.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this valuable information, is great for us because guava is easily get in Malaysia and is not pricy.
Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing such beneficial blog post!
Malaysia as one of the tropical countries where a long list of fruits are able to grow well on this land of peace. Some of us, including me, do not know their actual values in term of nutrients and price. There are types of fruit which able to produce fruits all around the years regardless of the “season”.
However, when we are able to obtain something easy, most of us would not appreciate it because we would need no worries to get supply when it is finished. Furthermore, in regards of people’s expectations toward what they are consuming and people started to be choosy on what they want instead of what they really need at this point.
We shall appreciate what we have, good or bad.
Thank you.
Wow! It is no wonder that when I am abroad, my foreign friends would often buy guava when it is available in the market despite the exorbitant price! It basically gives us what we want: beauty, good health, long life, fertility (which I understand is a growing problem today).
A guava a day keeps the good stuff coming our way!
Guava is one of the most popular fruits available at many fruit stalls in this part of the world where I live. Guava is relatively easy to grow, has attractive foliage with fluffy white flowers, and produces abundant sweet, juicy fruits.
It has been hailed as one of the super fruits due to the numerous health benefits it offers. It indeed is a powerhouse of nutrients, such as vitamin C, lycopene, antioxidants, potassium and many more as listed in the article.
What is amazing is that apart from the fruits. other parts of the guava plant is also beneficial! Guava plant leaves are best known as a natural pain reliever.
The young leaves of the guava tree can be brewed to make a tea that’s been part of traditional medicine for centuries in Mexico and parts of South America. According to laboratory research published in 2008 in “Revista Do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de Sao Paulo”, extracts of guava leaves effectively killed types of bacteria that can cause infectious diarrhea.
Definitely more reasons to consume guava, and maybe plant some guava in your backyard!
I am really quite surprised that there are so many wonderful health benefits of the Guava fruit.
It is quite unassuming to know that a not very well known fruit can have so many health benefits, especially benefits like aiding weight loss, curing diabetics and even cancer.
This article by Dr Janardhana Hebbar is really beneficial and more people should read about these benefits as it could save them money on medication and could maybe be even more effective.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing!
With so many benefits, guava can be coined as a super food. It’s almost like eating multi-vitamins combined with anti-oxidants. All I was told, growing up, was to eat guava when constipated because it is high in fibre.
Guava is a very common and popular fruit in Malaysia. We can find it everywhere in the stores and at coffee shops during lunch. In Malaysia, we usually add ground dried sour plums when eating guava for taste reasons.
With so much health benefits, we should definitely eat more guava.
It’s amazing that a simple looking fruit has so many health benefits. The guava trees grow well in tropical Malaysia and there’s the seedless guava which the fruit can be eaten without having to spit out the seeds. In Malay, it’s called ‘jambu.’
I know Rinpoche loves Guava now know the benift . Guava are a delicious fruit whose juice has, on occasion, whole guava can be a sweet snack that will make us feel like you’re in paradise even when you’re sitting in your cubicle. If the guava is soft very yum yum …
