9 Special photos
Dear friends,
Here are nine special photos you must see, share and contemplate on. The old saying is true, one picture paints a thousand words. Maybe in this case, 10,000 words. Let me know what you feel about these pictures. They disturbed me enough to reproduce them here to create more awareness. May all horse drawn carriages be banned.

9 Photos That Will Make You NEVER Ride in a Horse-Drawn Carriage
One by one, cities around the world are banning horse-drawn carriages. This is why:
1. Because a horse isn’t meant to be stuck in traffic.
2. Because horses used to pull carriages are kept in places such as this when they’re not working.
3. Because sometimes cars crash into them.
4. Because horses don’t have airbags.
5. Because some horses, such as Jerry, just collapse and never get up.
6. Because Jerry didn’t deserve to be dragged away.
7. Because this doesn’t make the park “more romantic.”
8. Because horses belong here …
9. … not here.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these meaningful and heartfelt pictures of those horses. Yes looking at those pictures indeed paint a thousand words. It is truly sad seeing that poor horse Jerry had to suffer. Making horses pull oversized loads like carriages is indeed cruel. They are forced to toil in all weather extremes, heavy traffic all day long. Well they might suffer in silence debilitating leg problems in long term as they have to walk on hard surfaces. Horses would definitely love to be free living on green fields where it’s a better environment for them. They could run freely as they wish. In many cities, horse-drawn carriages are seen as tourist attractions. Even though horse-drawn carriages have been in use for thousands of years , I do hope more countries will ban horse drawn carriages. Recent years many cities around the world are banning horse-drawn carriages. Great news as horse are not mend for hard surfaces, in heavy traffic and so forth.

I never knew it was so bad, the horses suffer so much. But humans won’t stop because we are selfish and we only care about ourselves and not anything else like other lives around us. It saddens me when I look at pictures like these, the animals did nothing to deserve consequences like this. The horses are indeed not suitable to be in the city and carrying carriages. The horses should be let free in the green grass field where they can run free and relax there.Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for sharing these meaningful pictures. it is truly enlightening.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these photos. The horses are indeed not suitable to be in the city and carrying carriages. The horses should be let free in the green grass field where they can run and relax there. Some animals are really not meant to be in the city. Once they are there and the place doesn’t suit them, they will be unwell.
With folded palms,
Vivian
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
Respect the poor horse…they are human too.Sad to see them working so hard when the carriage is fully loaded. They should not be on the road in the first place. The authority should ban the horse carriages on heavy traffic .There is so many other transport available.I have seen how the horses been treated when they do not follow the command..the poor horse will be beaten then.
I do hope the authority will impose ban on horse carriages in places which is unnecessary .
The first time I saw these pictures, it was extremely upsetting. The horse carriages are totally unnecessary from many angles.
1) ECONOMICS – in the greater context of the New York economy, they make such a minuscule and insignificant difference, where it’s pointless. Don’t tell me that the draw of Times Square can be beaten by a horse-drawn carriage. There is no way a horse-drawn carriage can be trumped by, for example, the money made off Empire State Building souvenirs or the income of MoMA (Museum of Modern Art). There is no way transactions involving horse-drawn carriages can compete with the transactions on Wall Street
2) ROMANTICS – there are thousands of other things that can be done in New York to romance your partner, that does not involve the use of animals. Before the advent of horse-drawn carriages, I’m sure New Yorkers and visitors were capable of being romantic with their loved ones
3) TRANSPORTATION – erm, Uber? Town cars? The subway? Plenty of other options exist that do not involve the use and abuse of horses
4) TRADITION – slavery was tradition at one point. Not all traditions are positive traditions that should be preserved
5) EMPLOYMENT – for the few hundred to few thousand people employed by this industry, they can easily be absorbed into other areas of the American economy that do not involve the exploitation of animals
6) ENTERTAINMENT – please go and watch a Broadway show that doesn’t involve the exploitation of anything. Good, clean fun and you even get a souvenir…the program book!
What would happen to the horses if the industry were to close? Let them live out their days on nice pastures, not in a concrete jungle which is unnatural even for humans. The ‘tradition’ and industry of the horse-drawn carriage is utterly maddening and pointless, and really needs to be stopped.
Times have changed and horses do not belong in modern day cities anymore definitely not on busy roads and junctions. So now we are aware of what can go wrong with having horses in the cities lets move forward and make the right choices and not have horse carriages anymore.
Oh my gosh poor darlings. I can’t imagine them being exhausted to the point that they collapse, they really do not deserve this at all. I think this is a trend in New York isn’t it, I’ve seen celebrities voice against this torture in the past. A developed city like New York does not need to do this, it’s not like remote Himalayas where no transport has reached! I really hope this does not catch on to the rest of the world and it should NOT by the way. Imagine seeing horses at roundabouts and red lights. What! This is very bizzare. Please have compassion New Yorkers and don’t use horses. They deserve better!
Wow, i never knew it was so bad, the horses suffer so much. But humans won’t stop because we are selfish and we only care about ourselves and not anything else like other lives around us. What is the right that humans have to treat animals like this? Because this is just horrible, yet if you see this on the street, you would think it is normal but it is actually cruel.
It is so sad to see animals struck down because they were forced to do labour, kept in bad conditions or because they weren’t given enough safety or care that is given to humans. They are lives too and we knock them out of their habitats and destroy their homes to make them our slaves? Why? I bet when you think of a horse, you think of one in captivity or in a human barn where they are kept and not allowed to go to their real homes, that should say enough about how humans have animals, because when you think of them, they are already in captivity.
We think that because animals or horse in this case, cannot speak for themselves, abusing or mistreating them is alright. It’s “fine” that the horse needs to pull a carriage full of people or it’s “fine” that the horse gets stuck in traffic surrounded by cars which releases carbon dioxide. It’s not. It saddens me to see people still using horses as a transport medium. The suffering they go through must be unbearable. Animals have feelings too and we should start creating awareness for this issue.
I just cannot believe how these majestic creatures are being treated. They should be able to run freely on grass fields and not to walk on the hot roads in the busy cities.
I remember seeing these in India, just looking at the faces of the horses would break one’s heart. They are not being treated humanely. The way they are just being dragged around and forced to move around is just wrong.
I really hope that one day all these horse carriages would be banned. We should never support it as it is just torturous for the horses.
It saddens me when I look at pictures like these, the animals did nothing to deserve consequences like this! Can you imagine all it ever did in it’s life was to ” serve ” the humans tirelessly, and when accident happens, they were basically just left to die. All animal including humans should be treated with equality and not with that ” double- standard ” way of looking at things or treating others. I really pray that activities that includes animal cruelty will be banned very swiftly so that the animals do not have to suffer. They deserve to live their lives free just like us.
These 9 pictures to some may just be about a horse pulling a carriage and then getting in to some mishaps and accidents at some point but to me, it is really heart breaking to know that despite how far we’ve come since the days of the horse drawn carriages with such modern inventions of the petrol engine, people still crave to travel on such carriages just for the thrill of it.
To add to that, these irresponsible drivers are not doing anything for the welfare of their horse when resting and that makes me even more upset.
I hope that the countries that still allow horse carriages on roads will soon make it illegal.
Although there are only 9 pictures and a few short sentences in this article, I’ve learned a lot. There is a very famous quote by Mark Twain and it says “the more I know about people, the better I like my dogs” and I totally agree with him. Humans are worse than animals, because humans will rape, murder, torture, betray and etc to other humans. But I have never seen an animal done that before, of course that a lot of animals fought with each other to death but I’ve never seen an animal that would backstab/betray their own kinds. Why is it that some people are so cruel that they will discard other beings emotions and gain something useless such as money? Is it even worth it? Animals are not just something, they are someone. So please think before you do these kind of things.
Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing on how they treat horses in modern times in the city.We do not need to use the services of horse carriage down town any more.It is totally unnecessary as we have more advance mode of transportation like cars or even motorcycle if the traffic is heavy. To be more economical or environmental friendly we could consider hybrid models.
Horses should belong in the wild as mankind have evolved to the dependency of machine which is easier to upkeep and more reliable during encounter with harsh climate.Even the pavement and roads are design for motorized vehicle if not bicycle!!!
Most often the horses at put at mortal risk for fun ride in the city.If they actually want to see the city they should use those commuter buses without roof to have a clearer view in the city….
Let them be free….Would we like to be treated like those in the picture of the dead animal and being discarded without any dignity when we are down!
Human uses animals for their own benefit, to indulge in false pleasure created by own illusion of Fairy tale, and greeds blinds them from the suffering of the Horse. its Heart wrenching watching these photos, they belong to mother nature, not in concrete jungle. When i see this photo’s its also saddened me of the horses that were used in movie set, which the horse are use in movies that involves fights scene and explosion, everytime when i see the horse falls, its saddens me, although it is a movie, but the agony and suffering the horses gone trough we would never feels or understand.
the Horse Drawn carriage must stop, as it bring no benefit but instead sufferings.
I do not stay in a city having horse-drawn carriages as daily transport, and ignorantly thinking that this is something happened in old old times…until I see these pictures sometimes ago in Facebook and Rinpoche’s blog here.
I have done some web search and found out that there are quite many cities in the world still having horse-drwan carriages, to have them run on hard road surfaces, busy traffic and with their exhaust fumes.
Why would we have horse-drawn carriages running on the roads? To have horse-drawn carriages carry us is a kind of “prestige”? Or some other reasons…
You can also sign this petition to stop the horse drawn carriage. Please contact your local legislators to ask if they will sponsor a ban. Many cities—including Biloxi, Mississippi; Camden, New Jersey; Palm Beach, Pompano Beach, Key West, and Treasure Island, Florida—have already banned horse-drawn carriages.
Many human are ignorance and cruel. We exploit whatever resources available for the benefits of ourselves. Our selfishness causes sufferings to others and to animals. Some human thought there is nothing wrong with this due to their negative karma, some may feel sad seeing this but they will forget about this as time passed by, some may choose to stay silent or do nothing. Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing the photos and want us to contemplate. I think unless we start to transform and reduce sufferings of others, the cycle of samsara will continue..
OMB…every life deserves to be happy and healthy, not to be used for human needs and pleasure. I really feel sorry for the horses who need to live and work in cities where they are not supposed to be.
Please do not harm animals in anyway, they feel pain just as we do.
Horses continue to endure pain and suffering because of this outdated practice. The only way to end this cruelty is to ban it permanently and give these horses the freedom they deserved.May no animals be harmed or tortured in any way.
Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.
Sad, very sad, really very sad to see this pictures (except picture #8) which indicating the facts of another act of human race mistreated great creatures, the horse.
This is so appalling! In quest for a fairy tale romance, many are ignorant of these creature’s unhappily ever after. I pray that these poor creatures be free of such suffering soon.
Oh my god what a cruel way to treat animals.
Those poor horses work and work and work and yet they have to stay in crowded apartments with conditions that are like workhouses.
Sadly people everywhere still think that horses are great transport.
In places like Indonesia the place is so crowded with cars that the horses and the driver have to concentrate so hard that it gives you the heebie jeebies just riding on them.
Sadly the government refuses to do anything about it.
I really hope that Indonesia and all other places would stop using horses and get to using cars or anything as long as it isn’t animals.
It saddened me to see those poor horses were so badly treated by their owners, they helped the owners to bring in money for them and yet when they are not working, they are locked up in the small cell like prison. Animals have feelings too, they need love and care we must create the awareness for not harming animals or abuse them. It is good to know that cities around the world are banning horse- drawn carriages. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing these picture. These are something let us think about what is wrong with human being. Our heart are sick, and we do not know we are sick, our karma blocks us from feeling the pain so we do not know we are sick, our karma blocks us from feeling others’ pain also so we can not generate our compassion. Animals can not talk or fight back does not mean they can not feel, from their eyes we can see they are suffering, how can these people ignore? I just wondering these people ignore or they just do not know animals has feeling just like them..
My favorite picture is no.8 for obvious reasons. The rest of the pictures again prove the sufferings inflicted onto animals by human beings. Commerce versus nature and commerce won before. I am glad that many cities today are stopping this tourist attraction.
We cannot imagine how frightening and nightmarish it might have been for any of these horses to be living in a city like New York where the streets are heavily crowded with modern vehicles, people and noise!
Why are horses still being used to pull carriages as a mode of transport for people in this modern era when you can have better ones like vehicles, trains, or even motorcycles?
The owner of these horses are ignorant, irresponsible, without conscience and compassion for the wellbeing of these pitiful horses.
The authorities and animal rights groups should take swift actions to stop the use of these horse-drawn carriages lest we have more horses harmed and killed unnecesarily.
