Do you approve of this hole?

Apr 29, 2012 | Views: 6,093

Most of us can’t stand the pain from being poked by a needle, or even a paper cut… but what about having a permanent hole in your body??

Fistulation is a surgical process where a hole is intentionally made on the cow’s side to give scientists access to the internal organs of an animal. A large number of fistulated cows are used for scientific research, where they are experimented on for the digestibility of different foodstuff for cows. Perhaps such experimentation may benefit life stocks by developing better foodstuff for cows, but will they just grow faster to get slaughtered?

Not all fistulated cows are used for scientific research, some are used for medical purposes. When cows are sickly, having a sterile stomach can be very fatal because the normal bacteria that helps the cow to digest food are no longer there. In this situation, veterinarians take some of the stomach bacteria from another fistulated cow, and use it as medication for the sickly cow.

This practice has caused an uproar within anti animal cruelty and anti animal experimentation groups. However, scientists and even some veterinarians are adamant that fistulating a cow with a cannula (plastic device) does not harm the cow in anyway, and that this surgical process actually increases the cow’s life expectancy. This life expectancy is compared to cows who are bred for meat, milk and leather…

What do you think about fistulated cows? Do you think it is ethical to conduct such research on these cows for the benefit of other cows? Do leave your comments below.

The dairy industry invented a new way to abuse cows, and is now cutting holes in them to improve milk production. Its call fistulation and a very cruel act of experiment in cows. The researcher are doing it to test the digestion of different, experimental blends of oats to create a more balanced feed for the animals. But they are doing it on the poor cows for their own sake. Fistulated cows are used for scientific research but the method used ,i do feel its cruel.Cannot imagine the pain the cows suffered as have witnessed many cases of fistula fixed in human. Its very painful i do feel it.
Hope the researcher will find other alternative ways to do their researchn not on cows.
    Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.

If this is acceptable, then for all the human patients who has a heart condition, a stomach condition, or a brain condition, should have a hole opened up on their body to faciliate the monitoring of their condition. So that the doctors can prescribe suitable and better medicine for the patient. Strangely, this is not done on human. But it is done on cows and the scienctist think it is ok. Just because the cow are held in captive and cannot speak human language does not mean that we, as human, can throw away morale standard and do what we wish onto the animal.

  3. Lin Mun on Jul 29, 2017 at 1:15 pm

Seriously put a big hole on the cow to access his internal organs and the scientists said it is not painful? This is a very cruel and horrible act. Can’t they find other methods that does not bring harm and suffering to the cow? Ridiculous thing is that they even make the research center into a pet zoo so children can experiment putting their hand into the cow stomach. What message/value are they instilling to children? I hope this research center will change their method and stop this cruel act.

I have never heard of, read or seen fistulation before this. That is just plain cruel. Do we cut a permanent hole on a human for science and medical research to benefit mankind? What we don’t do to ourselves we shouldn’t do to animals.

Whatever benefits and knowledge gained are only to be used to breed more cows for milk, meat and leather. How does this remotely benefit the animal at all!!!

  5. AC on Jul 16, 2015 at 6:17 am

I do not approve of holes being made in cows, or any other living thing. I had never heard of this procedure before, and I find it very shocking, unnatural and cruel.

So wrong. Absolutely cruel and unethical! If it shouldn’t be dobe on a person it shouldn’t be done on an animal! This is criminal and abusive.

I am so sorry which I really cannot stand this kind of thing happened!!!It’s sound like the scientist want to benefit the cow actually is not. Because they make some of the cow suffer more…I couldn’t stand that you want to help someone reduce their pain, but before the pain be reduce you used knife to cut their skin…what is the logic behind…I do not understand??!!Can someone explain to me?

My logic is if you want to help someone, that you must sure the person or the cow not go through the suffering process until you successful stop their pain or suffering.Same like what is all fistulated cows experienced now.

One thing I only can think about is the scientist tried to make sure all their experimental successful then they can benefit from there, it’s all about their own benefit not the cows:(:(Very cruel!!!

    Please stop it immediately!!!

In my personal opinion, instead of condemning it, we might need to take a step back to see and look into the matter differently.

Fistulation is being done for research purpose is understandable. Maybe instead being exposed they should have a closed lid. I don’t know. However, as a past researcher, animal ethics and human ethics are always the most tedious thing to be passed through before any experiment or research are being carried out. Most importantly, the well being of the test subject. If this “experiment” or “procedure” was approved, then there should be certain standards that are being instilled in order and to prevent any issues or legal cases being condemn on.

No doubt, there will be better and different ways to do than that method, probably one agency or research group, should look into that matter. I do believe there is always a reason behind this procedure and matter rather than, we without knowing anything about agriculture or animal produces in terms of research should talk about it.

Rather than condemning, maybe we can treat this as an educational thing like what rinpoche has showed, and levy, the pro and cons about it. And maybe put a little thought for the people who are stucked in the lab and farms, taking care of the animals and have the courage to do them.

Just a two cents of my thought, I may be wrong, I do appreciate some constructive debate about it.

I wouldn’t want a hole in my body, i will have no comment as i personally do not think this is good and it is a for of cruelty to animals, which i hate, but they say the cow lives longer. Also if the cow lives longer, it will just be longer with the hole. No comment today

This is just disgusting! How would u feel if that hole was in your body permanently? It is just sad that the research facility can even use it as a tourist attraction, brain washing the children that it is okay to do things like this. Through this, what are we telling our next generation? Hurting animals that are weaker then us is okay and we should continue doing so? Or do we torture animals in ways then say it is okay because it is for research sake.

It is just unbelievable that how people would even do these kind of things to animals. We should not be harming them in any way. More to say not like this!

  14. Sergei on Jun 13, 2013 at 12:12 am

It’s just fucked up…. It’s worse than a matrix, its scientist who lost their humanity somewhere along the way. Why if normal person hurt dog or cat, will go to prison, but this butchers stay free and keep torturing animals?! “Scientist” who can’t observe animals without cutting them, should not be allowed to practice science, because this is not a science..

  15. sandra on Jun 10, 2013 at 3:47 pm

This is cruelty to the animal who is voiceless. Just another sick practise in the name of science. I hope for the day where this is all stopped. People can survive just fine not eating animal meat. They would be a lot healthier too!

I do not approve of this hole being made in cows

  17. Paris on Feb 3, 2013 at 3:25 pm

Well I don’t really believe that this is being done for the greater benefit of other cows. Throughout history, cows have been doing very well on their own without needing all these interferences! It seems like humans have messed up the living conditions, health and welfare of cows and methods like fistulation are to either repair what they’ve damaged or, more selfishly, to make it “easier” for humans to breed cows for their own benefit – food, fashion, even more scientific research etc. Just as Rinpoche has pointed out, “Perhaps such experimentation may benefit life stocks by developing better foodstuff for cows, but will they just grow faster to get slaughtered?” So… exactly – the “life stocks” (and what a horrible way to refer to living creatures, as stocks!) are benefited but only so that they can ultimately benefit humans.

I don’t think traditional farming methods would ever have conceived of something so cruel and unnecessary. And cows have been doing just fine all over the world for centuries without needed such violent intrusions. Cows – like every other living being – were not made to have holes through their stomachs and for their internal organs to be made so readily “accessible” to others! If they were meant to be like this, then surely they would have evolved and developed to be this way. The fact that they haven’t means that procedures like this are totally necessary.

  18. Jutika Lam on Jan 30, 2013 at 8:44 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

I totally do not approve this stupid act that these people would do such a thing to an innocent cow. It is true how we cannot stand a paper cut, being poked by an needle and any other forms of pain and yet there are people here making a permanent hole in cows just to make another cow well.

What i just don’t get it is that why make a cow suffer a permanent hole just to heal another cow, why make two cows suffer instead of one? It just doesn’t make sense to me because of that.

To me and think for most of the people it is just so disgusting and gross, totally can’t believe that even the kid shown in the picture really went and put his hand in that cows stomach. Even if somebody paid me a million bucks i would never in my life put my hand in to any animal’s stomach

Thank you so much Rinpoche for sharing this disturbing yet realistic news. It was a real eyeopener and mind blowing.

    Love
    Jutika

  19. Andrew Boon on Jan 29, 2013 at 7:21 pm

OMB… this is seriously VILE! How can humans actually do this? A feeding tube in a human is such discomfort let alone a gaping hole forced open by a contraption for ease of extracting contents from the stomach of a poor cow???

There is something really wrong with ANY justification one can come out with to say it is for the betterment of these animals and in the name of medical research!!! Talk about delusional and selfish reasons.

On the other hand, imagine the karma of the poor cow, being born as an animal and on top of it being subjected to such torture…

  20. Lucas Roth on Nov 7, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I do not approve of this hold at all. This video is just disgusting to watch. And Humans do this to experiment. People should never do this to an animal. Please stop this.

This is so sick. The scientists may claim that it’s to clean up the bacteria and stuffs in the stomach, but why can’t they find a better way that benefits the animals and humans. Animals in the sense that they do not have to suffer through all these inhumane activities. On the other side, humans do not have to collect more bad karma.
Thank You for sharing Rinpoche, I have no idea that they have these kind of activities in other countries until i saw this article.

I seriously do not care what is the purpose of the hole at the stomach of these caws for. Either for saving other sickly cows or whatever, it just doesn’t make sense. These cows do not feel the pain because they are on high dose of painkiller. Can you take it if a doctor make a big permanent hole at your stomach and telling you that he’s gonna take something from there from time to time to save someone’s life?

  25. Gisela T on Jul 6, 2012 at 12:38 pm

This is ridiculously sick and seriously there is no humanity at all! I strongly disagree to use animals for research, be it for science, medicine or food. Why hurt other living beings just to satisfy our taste buds or the so-called betterment for us human beings?

We always talk about human rights, oh yeah, but what about animals rights? People just ignore it. Sad. Animal cruelty is a big issue. If no one speak up and take legal actions to it, according to some research, by 2022, 22% of all species will be extinct.

I definitely do not approve of the use of this method and can’t imagine that their is a need for these methods?

I mean if we can simulate and study the secrets of the universe through simulation and study without actually going to the sun or visiting the nearest black hole.

Why do we need to rely on and use animals for testing and food when their are so many other alternatives so much better for our health and the environment. We have tools such as virtual modelling in some cases better than the real thing, for surgeons to practice NEW techniques less invasive methods safer for patients?

So the real question that WE should be asking of science and scientists is why do we need to use animals in this way? If you would not do this to yourself what makes it right to do this to other beings?

For scientist that are meant to have some brains between their ears? doesn’t seem like the best use of resources and brain matter in my view.

I met a scientist in this field 10 years ago and asked the exact same question to her? I can’t believe this post has jogged my memory after so many years. To cut a long story short…a random conversation was a catalyst for this person to make a change…the decision had been made but required a tipping point.

What sticks in my mind is the realization in her eyes that what she had done in her role was not good. The fact that she shared this information with me was a big step (even she admitted this) not even her family knew what she did for a job. After all these years I hope she found the new occupation she was looking for at that time.

For these reasons I made the decision to NOT eat meat for the remainder of my life because I want my actions to match my beliefs.
Looking back after many years of practice it is great to see the results of not being attached to food, that next meal and being able to dedicate these merits.

I would humbly request that we may deride those on the other side of this debate, jump up and down and call them every name under the sun but would suggest that we can make a difference by being compassionate activist.

Imagine- if an alien put a “fistula” on us; and, told us that they are doing us good by researching on us, how long we able to survive or how to prolong our life in order to use us more e.g: eat our meat? Becoming energetic slaves for them? I think i rather die than becoming a research objects.
The cow, can’t shout at us and say NO! Can’t cry, can’t tell us that they are afraid.
In the name of research, how many animals have to scarify their life to gives us an answer. By the name of science how many centuries the animals is torture and killed, until the research is so call completed.
If science can get an answer related to human from an animal, this mean, science is actually thinking that the animals are similar to human.

Everyone has different point of views but for Buddhism view, we should not hurt or kill living beings. Even if research or test may prolong the life span of cows. But they will ended up as a product to produce milk and meat to satisfy the taste bud of humans. This post is similiar with the bear bile duct for medicine purpose. http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/animals-vegetarianism/dont-buy-bear-bile.html

Many of us do not know that many medicine which we are using now and it cure/release us from pain or suffering, actually it brought suffer to some animals and caused their life in some cases.

The pictures of the fistulated cows just makes me sick! How could we do this to the cows or any other animals? This is just cruel. Yes it might be for whatever “research” to help the cows, but at the expense of what? Their bodies? Poor cows.
At the risk of sounding like an ignorant idiot, these research are being conducted for what exactly? So that the cows can grow bigger and faster therefore killing it in a shorter time? Reasons for the research at the end of the day is also for us selfish human beings. This is downright ABSURD!

Another question, how do we know if the fistulation doesn’t harm the cows? Does that mean the poor animal does not feel any pain?

How can we do this to our kind mothers? How do YOU like having a hole in your stomach? No thanks.

Thank you so much for sharing this, Rinpoche.

Utterly gross. Ok let’s turn the table on the people who came up with the idea and who insist it is absolutely no harm to the cows as they show no protest anyway. Let’s poke a hole in their stomochs and shove our hands in the hole and manipulate their insides while they are still awake. That should be ok too, since it’s ok the other way around? If you say it’s ok, prove it. If you protest, shows it’s not ok, then why do it to the cows? Why the double standard?

  48. Uncle Eddie on May 2, 2012 at 12:41 pm

For decades, experiments which cause pains and sufferings have been conducted on animals, either to develope new medicines or to test for safety of products. Such tests also reduce the quality of life in animals in many other aborminable ways. Ethically, spiritually, humanely and in the living rights of a living ‘being’, no one should have the liberty to do so, i.e incurring pains and sufferings to it! Compassionate ethicists think we humans should hve a greater moral responsibility towards such animals, and make it compulsory to carry out reveiws before such experiments are been carried out. Care and attention should be paid to reduce possible distress, pains and sufferings to its minimal level if any to be caused to the poor animal. Any living animal also has life and is still a living being and has the right to live through it as given!

  49. Milly on May 2, 2012 at 12:12 pm

I wonder if the scientists and veterinarians would agree to have a hole on their bodies even if they were told it would not harm them. If we stop eating meat, such research need not be conducted at the expense of inflicting pain on those poor cows. In a nutshell, its for profits $$ that such atrocious acts are still being done in civilized societies and packaged as “research”.

What karma brings such an Overself here as a cow with a hole in her stomach? Regardless of how worried and sad I feel for these cows and how unapproving of this practice, and neither can I pretend to know that a greater power is at work, but what is this greater power that is at work on this? I know there are sufferings in nature but this is one of those things that makes me struggle with thoughts that I see humans as the worst in the cause of sufferings, manmade sufferings. Why are we here? This planet had evolved well before human existed in it. So what are humans doing here on earth and being “the greatest” intelligent species we are among other intelligent species, and having the greatest and the worst of creations ever created by any creature on this planet to our credit.

I am not a scientist, but I know science have brought us to where we are. That we are more knowledgeable through science. I do ask thought, is this the best way that these scientists can learn? People get opened up too to be saved. If it can be done, would anyone person volunteered to expose and display their inner body like these cows for the sakes of science. In this crazy world that I know of, I won’t be surprised that someone would, though the thought of it does shock me.

I don’t know what else to think but I wish these cows can tell us what they think, and how they feel.

    • Swiftling on May 1, 2012 at 3:17 pm

But i wish most, I pray they be free from suffering…

  53. Jeffrey Gan on May 1, 2012 at 2:13 pm

The “fistulated” cows are then often put on display at events especially in Universities to lure Children and prospective student as well. Look how low people can go just to prospect students. There are more humane ways to teach science and animals to students than having them to reach into a cow’s stomach!.

  54. nicholas on May 1, 2012 at 11:28 am

    ooohhh. This is so sick!
How in the world the make such a hole to the cow?
For any reason, I don’t think it;s right!

Not even human can take it. I just hope when they want to do all this they can think of the reflection of doing it to themselves.

Just like Lew mentioned, if can’t stop it but at least we can be vegetarian to contribute the lessen of animal being slaughtered. From here hope they build up the compassion mind towards animals.

  55. Lim KSJC on May 1, 2012 at 2:55 am

Om Mani Peme Hum… Human action make the animals so suffering. May the scientist Ignorance to be clear so that they can stop this kind of unskillful and cruel experience…

  56. Helena Chin on May 1, 2012 at 1:31 am

This is terrible and sickening!!! What kind of research is this to harm these beings!!!

  57. william on May 1, 2012 at 12:59 am

This is so cruel!! No matter what you say that the cow does not feel anything or increases its lifespan, it is totally cruel. I’m sure it is very painful to cut out that hole! Poor cows….. We should all be vegetarians and that will definitely reduce the need for research on how to breed the cows faster.

I do not support this cruelty in the name of research!

  58. Pastor Chia on Apr 30, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Human find many reason and excuses for science purpose to improve better our human live. But always cause more pain to other animal. In this case fistulated cow.
It is work to do all this experience cause animal suffering and when it will end leave the permanent hole at the cow body.

  59. James Long on Apr 30, 2012 at 8:40 pm

I totally disagree with this kind of act. Why not do the same on the scientist’s relative body so that they can do research on what foods are better for human, if successful, their relative will be benefited and be part of the “legacy” in the science history!!?!

In Chinese we said “己所不欲,勿施于人",means whatever things that we do not want to have, never give it to others.

In fact, many researches have proven that milk, high protein food such as meat are not necessary or suitable for human being to consume. All these protein end up become Acidic Waste which causes lost of calcium in individual body.

    Everyone should be vegetarian now.

  60. Victor Phang on Apr 30, 2012 at 3:14 pm

For whatsoever purpose, that is no convincing reason to have fistulated cow. All kinds of animal can survive and know how to live in wild. Cows and other wild animals have been living in this planet for thousands of year without fistulation. I believe all beings have self-healing ability naturally, they know how to treat themselves when sick unless they are being locked and unable to look for the “medicine” they need.

Human is really sick now, because of wanting higher productivity from animals to fulfill their unreasonable desires like making big profit then used whatever painful way to cruel animals with better name of scientific advancement!!!

If those scientists have right motivation and are so sincere to improve life of any beings, then they should sacrifice themselves to be experimented with all kind of tubes, drugs and devices, like that I will really respect and salute them as they are just a living Buddha!!!

Hopefully one day, Dharma can become one of the compulsory subjects in all the schools and universities.

Thank you very much for sharing Rinpoche. Take very good care.
    With love,
    VP

  61. KH Ng on Apr 30, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Seriously sick and intellectually moronic to justify with any reason that this is done and is ok. To introduce a child to this sick act is really bringing the moronic index to another level. Sorry for the cows and even more sorry for these researchers. Om Mani Padme Hum!

  62. Grace Leong on Apr 30, 2012 at 2:19 pm

The main reason why such gross actions can be done on the cow is because the human species think that they are more superior , a class above other beings !! How sad is that ? When these humans are reborn as cows , I am sure they don’t want to be treated with such cruelty !

  63. Siong Woan on Apr 30, 2012 at 1:31 pm

Shared this via FB and my uncle commented as follows:

‘They will be rewarded with retribution the next life…pray for mercy’

  64. Mc on Apr 30, 2012 at 6:30 am

I cannot see how these people can allow themselves to tolerate, let alone participate in a process such as this. You would not be able to do this if we were to remotely regard the cow as a living being capable of pain.

I am sure the same people would just flip their mind if they found a hole in their house, car or an expensive item of clothing. It is a pity that they cannot feel for living beings.

Who benefits from this procedure anyway? What kind of research benefits from digging holes in living beings? I thought medical science was heading towards patching up holes instead of making them.

  65. WT on Apr 30, 2012 at 1:09 am

This is really awful. Imagine the hole on my stomach and doctor putting their hands into it to check it daily just making me feeling so sick. Whenever I think of it, the image of patients in the PICU with tubes around them appeared on my mind. So much suffering the cows have been through. Om Mani Padme Hum.
In addition to become vegetarian, we should also stop using any product that using animals for testing.
May all beings be free from suffering and be well and happy.

Man is the only species that causes suffering and pain to other species ( besides doing the same to their very own kind ) , justifies the actions in the name of science , or whatever , and then claims and declares that Man is the most intelligent , civilised species amongst all the other species ! What they are doing to those poor cows is cruel and barbaric !

  74. David Martin on Apr 29, 2012 at 9:45 pm

There are many things in this world that we find abhorrent, the practice of experimenting on living animals is one. Some may argue that in time we as humans recieve benefits from this practice and when we recieve these benifits some in the form of drugs to save our life’s , some in the form of new food stuffs and some that do actually benifit the very animals we torture, we as humans are apt to suddenly forget the animals that gave their lives for our benifit. One might ask which is more abhorrent those who experiment or those that benifit and forget. I would ask all who condem in the name of the Buddha to think first of the benifits they have recieved in their lives from birth until now. I would suggest that not one of you has not been in reciept of an antibiotic, a pill of some kind, a treatment that has not come from an other sentient being. Perhaps we should pause to give thanks and praise for the countless thousands of sentient beings that have given their lives for you. Condemnation of acts of cruelty is commendable perhaps we should look to our fellow man and put our own house in order first. Perhaps we should stop condemning others for their difference of faith, colour, creed, politics, or the choice we make in what we eat. Remember in our lives we will all kill something I hope it is not your compassion for your fellow man.

omb this is seriously disgusting and what the heck are we thinking?!?!? My uncle once had an operation to remove a ruptured appendicitis and they made an open hole on the side of his abdomen to let the bad stuff flow out into a bag… if we would cringe at the thought of having a gaping hole in our side, imagine someone putting their fist into that hole and rummage around everyday. These are live cows! Not machines!

  76. patsy on Apr 29, 2012 at 8:18 pm

This is so sickening. Especially the last photo of a young boy sticking his hand inside the hole.

How would we feel if we have a hole in us? Even though this is for research purposes I feel that it is very cruel and inhumane.

Stop eating meat and let’s create less sufferings for the animals.

  77. Lourdes on Apr 29, 2012 at 7:35 pm

The day they try to put holes like this on human is the day the humans will stop committing such horrific things like this! Let’s get a hole in a human and exhibit him/her in a petting zoo and even let your kids (like shown above) stick their hands in your internal organs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We humans don’t think that animals hurt and feel the same as we do? I heard a very religious woman say to my face that “GOD” created animals to kill them and eat them… I’ve never heard such a savage statement coming from a Sunday church going lady!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that’s how others think. Wake Up!!!

As we can see from these photos of the cows here every time they do research they have to resort to animal cruelty may it be cows, monkeys or whatever animals they picked the animals will have to endure sufferings during the experiments,so we better go for animal free tested products and stop eating meat.

  82. Elena on Apr 29, 2012 at 6:26 pm

Omg, how cruel!!! Eww ewww eww eww eww EWW! And OF COURSE the researchers will say it’s necessary, that we have to do the research for the sake of human kind etc etc.

Animal testing disgusting and cruel. How is the anatomy (chemically or physically) of a cow any way like that of a human? How is the anatomy of a rat, and its reactions any way like that of a human?

And you know what? If it IS like that of a human, that means THEY can feel pain too, just like US. So if WE don’t like to feel pain, why on earth would they???

  83. Irene Lim on Apr 29, 2012 at 6:20 pm

Oh Gosh! How would one feel if we were treated like these cows?

  84. mayy on Apr 29, 2012 at 6:09 pm

OMB! How can they do this just because they want to save someone else life by making a BIG HOLE in another’s life in this case the cow! Imagine it if we as the human having the BIG HOLE on the body. Do we want that? What makes the cow different from us human? Just because they are animal? Yet still they are a living being like us.

  85. Siong Woan on Apr 29, 2012 at 4:52 pm

Whatever the intention it may be, making a hole (a hugh one, by the look in the pictures) on the cows is subjecting the poor creatures continual suffering! In on the pictures, I could see the side of the hole is bleeding and I guess it will never heal properly.

Whoever thinks it is OK to dig a hole big enough to put an adult hand in it is crazy! Why not let the cows dig a hole on your stomach in the name of healing you ??

  86. JP on Apr 29, 2012 at 4:35 pm

NO! Animals should never be treated like this! Imagine if we used human beings for similar reasons? It’s not justifiable at all. So how can they justify it for animals? There must be better ways of helping the other sick cattle.

For a start, everyone who feels bad for cattle being treated like this should become vegetarian. Killing animals just to satisfy our taste buds is worse than fistulating cattle.

Reasons like, “It’s not convenient for my family and business associates when I’m vegetarian.” are all lame excuses. I’m vegetarian and I have absolutely no problems dining with my family and business associates. If they don’t want to eat with me or associate with me just because I’m a Buddhist who doesn’t kill, then too bad! I WILL NOT KILL JUST TO GET INTO THEIR GOOD BOOKS!

Dharma practitioners should start walking the talk because that they are practising compassion. No matter how much they justify, there is NO JUSTIFICATION FOR KILLING!

  87. lewkwanleng on Apr 29, 2012 at 4:26 pm

We should, in any way, cause harm to other beings.

Saying that making a hole in the body is not painful is plain BS. If we say it is not painful, then I would ask, “would you mind I put a hole in your body, but it is not painful”.

We may not be able to do much to stop all these, but the very least, we can become vegetarian and stop more animals being slaughtered.

    • Siong Woan on Apr 29, 2012 at 4:58 pm

      Lew, you mean “we shouldn’t” I hope…:)

  88. Girlie Ooi on Apr 29, 2012 at 4:15 pm

I squirm when I see hospital patients with tubes going in and out at various points in their bodies. To think that these poor beings have to bear with the hole all their lives. And have people poking their hands inside to dig around. Oh that hurts!! I wouldn’t want someone to do that to me. So let’s not put these beings thru torture.

  89. ALEXSAY on Apr 29, 2012 at 2:35 pm

THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THE SICK HUMAN MIND. THE COWS ARE BEINGS NOT THINGS TO BE EXPERIMENTED ON….WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT? IT IS DEFINITELY CRUEL WHATEVER THE MOTIVE ARE…IT THIS THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE SO CALLED SCIENCE FOR THE BENEFIT OF HUMAN BEINGS? WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHT OF OTHER BEINGS? TOTALLY UNWHOLESOME ACT AND MUST BE CONDEMNED. WHERE IS KINDNESS AND COMPASSION THAT WE ALL SHOULD DEVELOP & CULTIVATE? IMAGINE ALIENS DOING THAT TO HUMAN ON EARTH FOR THE BENEFIT OF THEIR KIND!!! TOTALLY DISGUSTING RIGHT? PERIOD.

  90. Thierry on Apr 29, 2012 at 12:07 pm

Whatever it is that I could not bear my mother to suffer, I should not accept it for any other being.
I should feel the same compassion.
Because there is no difference between the suffering experienced from the side of the being, be it my mother or another being.
There is no difference but how my mind perceives this being, and that perception does not make the suffering less.
So, to me, it is only plain logic, if I imagine my mother the object of such experiment and I feel sick, then there is no ground to accept the same suffering for any other being.

  91. jamiekhoo on Apr 29, 2012 at 12:01 pm

I don’t believe there is actually anything that would justify using animals for research for so-called “betterment” of humans – for their food, science, medical etc. It’s very logical – why would humans be more “important” to justify the lives and pain of so many other animals, just for the sake of bettering OUR health or something as frivolous as our beauty!!!

The scariest thing now however, is that we can’t always tell if products that we’re using have been tested on animals or not. Some of them do state on their packaging that they haven’t tested against animals, but many of them don’t say this – do we assume then, that they DO test on animals? You just can’t tell, really. It could be anything as simple and unassuming as a tube of lipstick, or a shampoo, or single capsule of medicine.

It could also be that a company may not themselves engage in animal testing, but components of the ingredients they use for their products come from companies that do – there’s a lot of hidden “truths” out there that manufacturers could easily bypass and lie about.

But I guess every bit of effort counts and we can start a step at a time to actively choose brands that DO state that they are against animal testing, or finding other more natural alternatives to the things we use. E.g. using natural remedies instead of high end medicines, or natural ingredients as toiletries and cosmetics instead.

  92. Han on Apr 29, 2012 at 12:00 pm

What do you think about fistulated cows? Do you think it is ethical to conduct such research on these cows for the benefit of other cows?

I think Fistulated cows are used to research the digestibility of different foodstuffs for cattle, still its very cruel to do this to animals, imagine, we have a hole with us for the whole life!

  93. henry ooi on Apr 29, 2012 at 11:53 am

There are some people laying in hospital beds with tubes sticking out from their bodies leading to medical equipment. Some of these patients could be in in such situations for days and weeks. But humans are far better treated in hospitals than animals in places such as this shown in the pictures here.

The scientists and vets may claim what they are doing is to find cures and it enhances the cows’ life span. But to leave a gaping hold for bacteria, germs and virus to invade is shocking. Surely, there could be better and humane ways to conduct such experiments.

    • David on May 3, 2012 at 10:51 pm

Your body already has 7 completely un-sealable holes. 2 nostrils, 2 ears, a mouth, a urethra, and an anus. We allow doctors to reach into any of these holes when we feel there is something amiss, what is different about these cows?

      • Anon on Jan 30, 2013 at 9:29 am

He said unclosable, not unsealable. Also, all of the openings you mentioned evolved for a specific natural purpose, this did not.

Are you fucking serious! This has got to be some sort of wind up…

I want no part of this, even being human taints me with the scientists lack of respect and compassion for their fellow beings. Bastards.

    • bibong on May 3, 2013 at 7:25 am

These cattle with fistulated rumens are used so that cattle don’t experience nutritional deficiencies with diets that have been used by rural ‘farmers’ for a long time. They also are used to help attain healthier meat from cattle by manipulating concentrations of specific fatty acids with some being beneficial to the animal itself as well.
It does look daunting at first sight, however due to the SURGICALLY administered cannula into the rumen, these cattle are A LOT better off than some cow at a dirty, unproductive, poorly managed country farm.

n their theoretical model, rudeness has this impact on our ability to think because it engenders negative sadness, anger. Researchers have found that common negative behaviours can spread easily and have significant consequences. The best way to avoid rude people is to meet their acts of rudeness with kindness. Exposure to neurotoxins in society is not new. Children today are raised in an environment that is much different from those days. Nowadays they are exposed to behaviours, profane language, hostilities and stress from which we adults, raised a generation ago. Studies have shown that children exposed to serious psychological trauma during childhood are at risk of suffering increased psychiatric disorders. Interesting read.

Revisit this blog again . Reading comments in this blog Rich people have substantial assets and income, providing a sense of security and freedom from financial worries. Owning high-end cars, designer clothing and everything they want with their money. Rich people often have more time for leisure, hobbies, and travel, allowing them to pursue interests and experiences. They may live in large, luxurious homes and have or apartments, often in desirable locations and having personalized services. The fundamental difference in mindset between the rich and the poor is, the rich have understood a very simple principle money makes money. Rich people see money as an opportunity, while poor people see it as something to be earned. Poor people work hard for their money. It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has. Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much. The primary difference between rich people and poor people is how they handle their wealth. My thought been rich in this world it is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich.
    Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.

Found this old post …disturbing. Having a name especially a Bar linked to Buddha to be disrespectful towards Buddhism. After much controversy the owner had it removed. The Buddha Bar located in Sabah by a young owner which opened without much thought had many people complaining. Later was forced to have its controversial name changed to ‘Peacock Garden’ and had apologised for the controversial name. As a devout Buddhist, the name ‘Buddha Bar’ which serves alcohol, is disrespectful to the revered Buddha.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Siberia, considered the heartland of shamanism inhabited by many different ethnic groups, and many of its peoples observe shamanistic. Many of the indigenous communities reclaiming their traditional spiritual and healing practices . Interesting. Siberian shamanism is often called Tengerism, involves various rituals, including drumming, chanting, trance states, and offerings to nature spirits and ancestors. This religious practice has deep roots in Siberia and Central Asia in recent years with roots in the Turkic and Mongolic cultures. Many who have been live in a remote part of Russia, have preserved their shamanic traditions due to their isolation. Many customs of Tengrism are still been practiced where they emphasizes a deep respect for nature and its various spirits, including those of the earth, water, and mountains. They do believe in the continued existence of souls and the importance of honouring their ancestors.
Thank you Rinpoche sharing this ancient religion.

Everyone of us has an unforgettable different experience, a different destination and itineraries. The journey to Shar Gaden Monastery back in 2019, making offerings to the sangha , by the Kecharians hold special moments and memories. They were on behalf of His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche and Kechara in making an offering to all 650 monks of the monastery. On this fruitful trip the Kecharians had the honour to catch a glimpse of the normally-covered holy statue of Dorje Shugden . Awesome this holy statue of Dorje Shugden was handmade by HH Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. The team was also granted an audience with H E Domo Geshe Chocktrul Rinpoche. Having the opportunity to make offerings to the monks was indeed meritorious. Rejoice to them. Looking at those beautiful pictures paints a thousands words. Thank you Rinpoche and team for this sharing. Merely looking at it is a blessing especially the Holy Statue of Dorje Shugden.

Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. We can’t let our failures define us. Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure. Success is never permanent, and failure is never final. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness .Sometimes just reminding ourselves of the temporality of failure enables us to forge ahead and stay focus looking forward . Failure isn’t something many of us can handle gracefully. And even though we know it’s a common human condition, figuring out how to stay motivated in the face of failure .
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

Finally HH Dalai Lama said we can practice Dorje Shugden. After all these years of deep frustration felt by the Tibetan people. They who lack religious freedom been denied and been exploited in all sectors of society. More than 60 years the Tibetan leadership has cause the sufferings of those in exile who had propitiate Dorje Shugden. Dalai Lama did reiterated although he recommended not worshipping Dorje Shugden as it is a personal choice and freedom. Interesting read.

Working in a private hospital before ,having witnessed many personal tragedies faced by the living and dying patients. Many of these poor people faced their death with fear, with misery and pain before departing this world. With the images of all these in my mind, on occasion feeling sad and grieve at times when those we have cared .But nonetheless we should recognise certain truths. All of us are going to leave this world at one time and leaving those we love. In the teaching of the Buddha, all of us will pass away eventually as a part in the natural process of birth, old-age and death and that we should always keep in mind the impermanence of life. Along the journey of life, we are reminded of our own inevitable ends in waiting and everything is a blip of transience and impermanent. Be responsible, good and positive for ourselves and towards others. This leads to calmness, happiness and an outlook which contributes to a calm and controlled mind at the time of death. We have to remind ourselves the importance of rebirth and taking time to prepare for their own demise before its too late.To cultivate the good karma, our good actions are an excellent way prepare for our death. Having lead a responsible and compassionate life and have no regrets when death approaches enables us to surrender without a struggle. The life that we all cherish and wish to hold on. We are doomed to the endless cycles of life and death, we should learn and practices Dharma teachings .We are given a chance in life and choice to determine our future, to determine where we will go for rebirth. Spend our time on earth wisely before its too late.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is considered the incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and therefore he is an enlightened being. H H Dalai Lama has strongly discouraged the practice of Dorje Shugden worship within Tibetan Buddhism. Dorje Shugden is a prominent deity in the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Many highly attained Lamas have been relying on this Powerful Protector for centuries and even Dalai lama previously do propitiate Dorje Shugden . It cannot be wrong and its wrong to view it as a form of “spirit worship”. All his previous 9 reincarnations practiced with devotion, all of the Dalai Lamas teachers practiced Dorje Shugdan as well . The Tibetan community is torn over this issue and this has been the cause of much suffering and unnecessary prejudice. Dalai Lama is without doubt an enlightened being that surely cannot be tricked by a spirit. Dalai Lama did composed a praise to Dorje Shugden while at Dungkar Monastery . Interesting article , may more people read this and to understand better regarding this controversy. In 2020, the Dalai Lama made a Uturn by saying we can practice Dorje Shugden . Thats’ wonderful and relief for many practitioners.

Butön Rinchen Drup, 11th Abbot of Shalu Monastery, was a 14th-century Sakya master and Tibetan Buddhist leader. Butön Rinchen Drup a Tibetan great scholar and translator, known for systematizing the Tibetan Buddhist canon containing the Indian scriptures based on the spoken words of the Buddha. He also compiled the Tangyur collection that contains the Indian and Tibetan commentaries of these teachings. He wrote a famous text, the History of Buddhism in India and Tibet, which many Tibetan scholars utilize in their study till today. He remains to this day as one of the most important Tibetan historians and Buddhist writers in the history of Buddhism and Tibet. He was not merely a capable administrator but he is remembered to this very day as a prodigious scholar and writer and is Tibet’s most celebrated historian. After his death he strongly influenced the development of esoteric studies and psychic training in Tibet for centuries. Interesting biography of a great scholar.

nspiring a Tibetan Parliament representing the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, spoke bravely for the need to stop discriminating against Dorje Shugden practitioners. Tenpa Yarphel, a Tibetan MP speaking confidently for the sake of Tibetan unity. Tibetans in exile have also been particularly divided over the issue of the two Karmapas and the very damaging Dorje Shugden conflict. For someone who dare to speak for the sake of peace with the intention of moving forward to a better future. Tenpa Yarphel spoke up against the continuing discrimination of people based on their beliefs. For over more than 20 years those Tibetans especially those Dorje Shugden practitioners suffered from the lack of employment opportunities to discrimination. A wise decision of Tenpa Yarphel speaking up the truth of the Tibetan sufferings. They are not allowed in Tibetan hospitals, or apply jobs in the Tibetan civil service or even entering shop or hotels and so on. Tenpa Yarphel’s statement, paints a thousand words of reality. A big hand applaud to this brave man .

Losar is the Tibetan New Year, a festival that marks the beginning of the year on the Tibetan calendar. It is celebrated among the Tibetan community all over the world recently. Losar marks the beginning of the Tibetan calendar year a time for family gatherings, religious ceremonies, and feasting because of its long history and rich cultural traditions. The celebrations will last for 15 days whereby the first three days being the most important day for them and widely celebrated festival on the Tibetan calendar. During theTibetan New Year, Panglung Oracles are known to enter a trance state, of the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. This practice is considered a significant part of the Losar celebrations within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, providing guidance and blessings to those seeking their wisdom. People often consult the Panglung oracles to receive predictions, advice, and blessings for the coming year. Dorje Shugden will also give teachings while in trance of an oracle.
Reading this old blog again where back in 2022, the Great Protector Dorje Shugden gave an inportant message to everyone of us. We should take it seriously practising good virtues, such as prostrating ,making offerings and practise the holy Dharma. Everyone should always be kind-hearted and doing our best to cultivate loving-kindness, compassion and bodhicitta.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this precious advices.

Pemayangtse Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Sikkim, India that is part of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the oldest and most famous monasteries in Sikkim. It is home to Dorje Shugden, a spirit in Tibetan tradition. The monastery is one of the oldest and most famous in Sikkim. Pemayangtse Monastery in Sikkim, founded by Lhatsun Namkha Jigme of the Nyingma tradition. One of the earliest modern academic references to Dorje Shugden. Stunning sculptures, paintings and ancient scrolls can be found in the Monastery. Interesting story behind this monastery,as described by Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell a British explorer, collector and author. Through the years of travelling in India, Sikkim and areas on the borders of Nepal and Tibet, after doing research on Tibetan Buddhist religious practices he made a stunning discovery. He discovered that Dorje Shugden existence in the Nyingma monastery as written in his book, which confirmed that Dorje Shugden been worshipped in the Nyingma as well . Not only worshipped in the Gelug lineage but held prominence in the Nyingma tradition too. Interesting read.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

  • What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
