Amazing Things
Dear friends,
This picture of the relationship between a crocodile and it’s rescuer. It is indeed very touching to see such a ‘savage’ animal become affectionate, loving and playful with the person who has kind to him and saved his life. I do not know if this is common or not for a crocodile who can feel kindness and show affection towards a human, but this is something new to me and refreshing.
We should not attempt this in any way with crocodiles or any animals we are not familiar with. We should not be cruel to animals either in any manner. This is just something to share that kindness can penetrate better than cruelty.

Two Stories about a Crocodile and Dolphin
Deep in the Costa Rican jungle, a fisherman named Chito discovered a crocodile that had been shot in the eye by a cattle farmer and left for dead. Chito was able to drag the massive reptile into his boat and brought him to his home, where he stayed by his side for months, nursing him back to health.
He named the croc Pocho. “I stayed by Pocho’s side while he was ill, sleeping next to him at night…. I just wanted him to feel that somebody loved him, that not all humans are bad.” said Chito, “It meant a lot of sacrifice. I had to be there every day. I love all animals – especially ones that have suffered.”
The day finally came when Pocho was strong enough to go back into the wild. Chito took him to a lake near his house and released him, but the animal simply got back out of the water and followed him home.
“Then I found out that when I called his name he would come over to me.” says Chito. The fisherman has been hesitant to tell his story, even though 20 years have passed since he first rescued Pocho.
Pocho is roughly 5.18 meters (17 feet) long. He and Chito play, wrestle and hug on a daily basis. That bond, Chito said, took years to forge.
“After a decade I started to work with him.”, says Chito casually, “At first it was slow, slow. I played with him a bit, slowly doing more.”
Chito has told his story now only to raise awareness of the cruelty that can be done to animals, and the difference that affection and treating other rightly can make.
“He’s my friend, I don’t want to treat him like a slave or exploit him.” said Chito, “I am happy because I rescued him and he is happy with me because he has everything he needs.”

A very unusual friendship which I have not heard of. ‘ Incredible true story of Pocho. a injured crocodile was found on the bank of the Parasmina River in Costa Rica after being shot by a farmer.
Even an animal as large and carnivorous can be gentle and loving. All animals deserve the chance to live.Thank you very much for the good article.
Amazing to read story that even crocodiles can be so affectionate towards human. While everyone knows crocodiles are wild and aggressive but the story proven that animals has feelings too. While I am not sure neither if the story is real but it reminds us to not harm and create any pain to animals and other living beings.
A crocodile and a human as best friends. A very unusual friendship which I have not heard of. ‘ Incredible true story of Pocho. a injured crocodile was found on the bank of the Parasmina River in Costa Rica after being shot by a farmer. This Crocodile was rescured and nursed by a kind local man Chito who could not bear to let him die. Known as the ‘Crocodile Man’, Costa Rican animal lover Chito swims, plays and even feeds the crocodile. With permission from the authorities and the help of a vet, Chito looked after Pocho for nearly two decades. Over the years their friendships strengthened they grew to trust each other so completely. That’s amazing . The story of Chito and Pocho shows that even crocodiles can appreciate an act of kindness. Chito share his story to raise awareness about just how special crocodiles are and of the cruelty that can be done to animals.
The birth of a spectacular dolphin is amazing ,first time seeing one of these kind. Show respect, compassion , kindness and caring to any animals makes us a better human.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
The beautiful video of the birth of the dolphins and the trust that the dophin showed in the people around is very touching. We should always respect animals and help them.
Also the story of the person who helped the crocodile is very inspiring. Although the crocodile is generally feared, the fisherman Chita showed care for the crocodile and helped him recover from the shot. Thank you for these inspiring stories!
The story of the crocodile, Pocho and his rescuer Chito may sound crazy but to me, its awesome and incredible! Can you imagine yourself playing with a crocodle that’s almost 2 times of you? To me, its a very unique bond, even the fiercest animal can be conquered by a human’s kindness and genuineness, incredible.
Dear Rinpoche, I must say that their bonds are really strong. Some people also take care of the crocodile and most are when they are still babies, but there have been many cases that the crocodiles killed its owner. I’m really surprised when I watched the video, it is amazing that the baby dolphin was already energetic the moment it was born. Now that is something you don’t see everyday.
Thank You for sharing Rinpoche, these two incidences are equally amazing! Crocodiles are known to be very ferocious, and it’s hardly too see that they can bond with humans. Pocho knew that Chito was helping him and he trusted Chito for that. On the other hand, the birthing process of little dolphin is phenomenal and of course bloody, it’s not easy for the mother.
wow, these two things are amazing. i love people that like animals and i love animals. the man that is best friends with the croc is a truly special relationship. and the dolphin giving birth is very good because that is the beginning of a life. that you for sharing Rinpoche.
.
Thoughts on the first story:
-What an amazing story of Chito and Pocho! Who says that relationships between humans and animals are only limited to domestic animals? I’ve heard so many other amazing stories about wild animals and humans striking up a bond.
I believe all animals can feel our compassion and love. They can sense it if we are not a threat to them. That is why there are so many stories of human/animal friendships.
Thoughts on the Dolphin video:
– It is an amazing video. It is amazing because of the new life that the mummy dolphin brought into the world. Mother nature is truly wonderful. Somehow I don’t quite enjoy the fact that the mummy dolphin seems to be in so much pain.. =( and the amount of blood that the lil one caused her to lose. I love how the baby dolphin sprang to life and swam so quickly the moment it leaves the mummy’s womb. Too cute! LOL.
Beautiful post, thank you for sharing Rinpoche!
Yes, Animals have feelings too. This is shown in the story of Chito and his friend Pocho. Crocodiles are wild animals which is probably the oldest living creature that can trace back to the dinosaur age. However, with love and kindness, they can be changed to be loving too, even thought their natural instinct is to kill. THis story also tells us that animals can remember kindness and will repay the kindness, in this stiry it is being friends with the rescuer.
So, always be kind to animals even though we are scared of them.
Very touching and heart warming article here, Crocodile is known as dangerous animal, human do not walk close to it because they are life threatening. But look at this ‘dangerous’ animal, he does not harm Chito, he even play with him and sleep with him. Why not he kill Chito since he is so dangerous?
Simple reason is because he has gratitude, he knows how to appreciate good things others did to him, he know who is kind to him and are a genuine friend, so he repay them with what he has, that is spent his lifetime to be with them.
If compare to this dangerous animal, what about human then? we often forget the kindness other people has to us, we take those kindness for granted, and we even repay their kindness with rudeness, selfishness or even step on their back to go higher in life, are we not dangerous then?
There is so much for us to learn from animals, yes, human is in a higher realm than animal but no because human behave like animal or even worse than animal…
Be grateful is what we should learn and repay their kindness, because we want happy life and this is the path to happier life, take less and give more.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this amazing story with us. It made me realized that every animal has feeling and thinking even as cruelty as crocodile. It knows who treat him rightly and respect him. I am impressed by the friendship and trust built between Chito and Pocho. We should treat and respect every animal like human being.
What a heartwarming story of the fisherman and the crocodile. Crocodiles are ferocious reptiles yet this fisherman had the courage to take the risk of helping this crocodile. Animals have feelings too and even a ferocious reptile like Pocho can repay the kindness to Chito.
This is the first time I have watched a dolphin giving birth. Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this rare video with us.
Thank you Rinpoche for the interesting stories! Both of them are amazing!
It looks and feels scary to look at Chito and Pocho. I was surprised to read about their bond. How unusual! Isnt it amazing? Even an animal as large and carnivorous can be gentle and loving. All animals deserve the chance to live.
I can see mother dolphin struggling to give birth to her baby. Reminded me of giving birth to my 2 kids. She must have been in pain because she was swimming around feeling restless. But it was good to know that it was for short time and both of them are safe.
Thanks Rinpoche. Animals actually think and feel exactly like human beings, but they only do not speak human language and do not have the same physical body like us. We must not mistreat animals because of what they are.

“He’s my friend, I don’t want to treat him like a slave or exploit him.” said Chito, “I am happy because I rescued him and he is happy with me because he has everything he needs.”
How kind of Chito to think at this level… he is not a Buddhist yet he can think better, act kinder than most of us Buddhist. This goes to show that kindness is all pervasive, even a monster like creature, a chroc can feel and remember kindness, and show gratitude what about us?
I do not personally like reptilian creatures, thinking they are cold hearted beast… well this story breaks all misconceptions. This story reminds me of what Rinpoche use to tell us, even the most evil person on this planet have one person the they “love”, whether it is an attachment kind of love or true love is besides the point, but they would have 1 person that they actually love and protect. In this sense, what Budha taught us is true… everyone has a “Buddha” nature, because ones true nature is love and compassion… it just needs to be nurtured. Even for a chroc who is in the lower realms. I wonder when will the chroc get out of his lower rebirth… I know if it was Rinpoche, we would have a Buddha Statue right in the middle of a lake so the chroc an circumambulate to collect merits for a better rebirth just like how Rinpoche has done for the fishes, birds and mumus we have… http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/mumu-pets/mumu%E2%80%99s-buddha-garden.html
It is so amazing that a guy named Chito became a crocodile’s best friend. When Chito plays with Pocho, Pocho didn’t bite him but play with him. It shows that Pocho appreciate Chito for saving him and showed care to him by sleeping with him every night.
In this video, it’s show us that how much pain our mother felt while giving birth to us. From this year onwards, I would like to buy my mother a present each year on my birthday. Because I want to thank her for giving birth to me and raising me. Thank you for reading
Omg! Having a crocodile as a friend is so cool. I would love to have one at my house which doesn’t eat me. That is so cool, but what isn’t cool. Is that the crocodile was shot in the first place, i can’t believe that someone would do that to such an amazing animal. People should act and treat this way to all animals, then they will treat you the same way in return. And this story is the proof of when you be nice to animals, they will be nice to you too. That is why you should be kind to animals.
And secondly, the baby dolphin looks super cute. I loved watching the dolphin give birth. It reminds me about how much my mother loves me and the amount of pain she had to go through to give birth to me, and that is love. She cares for me, and gives me unless love. And i love her. So this is another reason why you shouldn’t hurt animals. The next time anyone is going to eat their meat, i want them to think about the animal that has been killed for you to eat. And think about how much pain that that animal had to go through to not be with its loved ones. I don’t think anyone would like that. So don’t eat meat and hurt animals please. Thank you for sharing.
The story of the crocodile is so amazing,i have never seen such a thing like this. Ferrous beast like crocodile can repay kindness to his saver this shows that every mother sentient being has buddha’s nature. They must have very strong karmic link in their previous lives. As for the dolphin giving birth video it’s so beautiful because for each and every single mother has to go through child birth pain and even risk their lives for their off springs and after that shower them with their unconditional motherly love.
Thank you for these amazing stories.
These stories are very heartwarming. First, such fierce animal like crocodile actually knows who’s good and who’s bad. He didn’t hurt his rescuer because he knows that Chito was there to save him. It proves that animals DO have feelings. Second, I’m very happy that the baby dolphin is born safely. Mama must be proud of him.
Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
Love, beatrix.
these two stories are beautiful and amazing. for the crocodile story, it is amazing what love and care can do. it can touch anyone. for the dolphin giving birth, it is amazing to see life be made and how it works. i hope those two dolphins have a long and happy life together. 😀
We do not share the same language as animals but nevertheless they have feelings. In some stories where there are communicators to help translating what dogs have to say to their owners, their love and thinking can simply be so amazing and touching that they can easily bring tears to our eyes.
It is sad that due to karmic reasons their souls are trapped in animal forms and so are more easily taken advantage and hurt by human beings.
The birth of this little dolphin is beautiful, if anyone of us can witness this with our eyes we will certainly be very touched by how beautiful these intelligent animals are.
On the reverse side, we have a story of a crocodile who can perhaps sense human’s feelings and hence shows gratitude towards the care-taker. I would have to say that it takes a massive amount of compassion for Chito to pull Pocho all the way back from the jungle, against all common sense. The relationship between Chito and Pocho is both amazing and beautiful. It tells me that something which we see as odd can be possible.
Dont try this at home kids, but is amazing, bonds that people can build when they do the right type of action. So it seems to me when people take the right actions magic happens. So can wars be averted I believe as long as dialogue remains wars can be averted and prevented. We can take actions that does not harm like how this person has done. The impossible has become possible :).
Dolphins are so gentle and awesome!
I am pleasantly surprised to see that a beast such as the crocodile can recognize a friend and know when not to harm. I have always thought of crocodiles being very primitive animals that behave purely out of their savage instincts. But now i remember that mother crocodiles do carry their young inside their deadly mouth without harming them, and have been known to ingest their young safely whenever there is danger nearby, and release them when the danger is gone. It would appear that crocodiles also have instincts similar to that of a human being and other higher life forms. Where did that come from?
The video of the dolphin giving birth is exceptional and again I am reminded that there are more that binds all beings than separates them. All beings must have imprints of love and kindness inside them that makes them display care and affection when triggered. In that sense, the question is what is it that we nurture in others…their aggressiveness or their gentleness? Very much depends on how we perceive them? If we see the similarities between all beings and ourselves, then it makes it difficult for us to want to harm them.
Thank you for sharing these two stories!
I particularly feel very touched reading about the crocodile and his rescuer. How kind of Chito to see beyond the physical danger that the crocodile can potentially do to him and nurse the crocodile back to health. There must be something special about Chito for him to be able to create a bond with this ‘dangerous’ being. I’m sure it took him a lot of time and care on his part to create this close bond, and it’s great that he never gave up.
What a great story of this unusual unlikely friendship between Chito and Pocho ! It truly shows that Love and Compassion transcends all other emotions that any being has.
The video on the birth of the dolphin is so heartwarming. Any birth – be it mammal, reptile, fish, bird, insect is a miracle !
Thank you for the amazing and touching stories about the crocodile and Chito. Shared the same view with Sharon that both must have some previous karmic link.
To be frank, last time when I watched National Geography,I didn’t really like crocodiles, because they are cruel and they kill other animals. But what Rinpoche posted here reminds me of they are still the same like human. They(crocodiles) have to be cruel because they couldn’t make a choice for not killing, they don’t have the mind to learn and to be educated.
For some people, they don’t get education too, they are been tortured too, so they act harmfully towards others. They don’t know anything better. No matter how ‘evil’ they are, they still need care and love, crocodiles are the same too. And from what Rinpoche has shared, I can see if we give genuine love and care, they will feel it and act positively.
And for the dolphin story, it shows me all the sentient beings are the same. Motherhood is the same, the blood color is the same, the care for the child is the same. So we should remember to treat animals in equal way, stop thinking that they don’t have feelings. If they don’t, they would just eat their child. There is a saying in Chinese, even though tigers are fierce, but tigers wouldn’t eat their child as well. Stop looking into the difference we have, but we should always remember what is same for all of us.
Thank you for these two amazing stories! The story about the crocodile and his rescuer is very touching and shows the possibilities that can happen if people are compassionate and caring. Of course i agree that we have to be careful around wild animals like that because of the potential dangers but it is really even more amazing that Chito willingly risked being attacked by the crocodile because of compassion for the injured crocodile. They must both have had some karmic link!
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing such awesome article and video…
May all mothers sentient beings always good health and free for suffering…
