Do You Know This Is Happening In Southern China?
Dear friends around the world,
I certainly am not happy about the violence that was taken out on these criminals but I guess the people had enough. Rarely do you see citizens taking action against criminals although, by violence I do not recommend. I am glad these vicious dog kidnappers have been caught and let’s hope given to the law. This is an unusual article seeing something done about the violence against dogs and the locals decided to do something. I hope the awareness against harming animals is harming society and ourselves will continue to grow in the vast land of China and the world. China has come a long way and is still growing in so many ways.
Please do your best to never harm or eat animals. They deserve to live and be happy just like us.

- Two dog-thieves beaten by angry mob in village in southern China
- Pair caught red-handed stealing a pet to sell to a restaurant
- Angry villagers beat the men bloody and refused to hand them over
- ‘Set free’ when their family members turned up to pay compensation
By Daily Mail Reporter
Two Chinese men caught stealing dogs to sell to restaurants were savagely beaten by a vigilante mob after they stole four pets while in a southern village.
The two men are accused of several pet dog thefts in and around Guilin City in southern China’s Guangxi Autonomous Region, which they would sell as meat to cafes and eateries.
However, when the pair was caught red-handed by one angry villager, it did not take long before a large crowd were attacking them with bricks and bats, beating them bloody.
Guilin City police said the pair would drive into small villages with their windows open, listening for barking dogs.
When they came across a decent sized animal, they would throw meat laced with a sedative into the yard, and then return half an hour later, after the drugged meat had been eaten.
They would then free the dog, and hit it over the head to kill it before throwing the body in the back of the car.
But after loading their fourth animal after striking in Sanjiang Village they were spotted by a dog owner who was just returning home and saw them dragging his pet to the car.
The man alerted his neighbours who rushed out and joined in forming an angry, violent mob.
The mob used large bricks to destroy their car, injuring one of the men in the process.
The pair was dragged out of the car, feelings running so high that even when police arrived, the villagers refused to hand over their victims.
Instead, they continued to parade through the streets and demanded a guarantee that they would get at least £500 in compensation for the dead animals.
In the end, the stand-off was resolved when the families of the two badly beaten men turned up and offered their apologies, and gave a promise to pay the compensation as requested.
Dog meat has been used for human consumption in China for centuries, where it is thought to have medicinal properties, and is especially popular in winter months where it is thought to generate heat and keep the body warm.
Dog meat is especially popular in Guangdong and Guangxi where there are even dog meat festivals every year.

In certain parts of China is actually famous for its dog meat consumption. Despite the widespread outcry against the country’s notorious eating habits there’s still restaurants serving dog’s meat.
Many locals are aware of the obscene cruelty of the animals being killed for their meat. The government is drawing up laws to prohibit the trade of wildlife and protect those animals and safety of its people. So its not surprised when the locals got angry and putting things into their own hands beating the two dog thieves savagely. Angry villager even attacks the two thieves’ car, smashed the car window. Got red handed and beaten badly till the police came. Nowadays locals gave up dogs meats for health reason and they are aware of it. Hope more could be done to safe those dogs.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing .
Please help to spread the message that dogs are helpless and innocent companion friends to humans but have been changed due to their fear. Help protect dogs safety and free them from captivity and only to be adopted to live in loving homes with families who will respect their feelings and appreciate their companionship. Kindly help change societies all across China and change the traditions of dog meat consumption brutality. Witness how dogs are regarded in North America as dogs have a nurturing life with families happy to have dogs as family pets.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. I think the villagers can’t stand anymore but to release their anger once they caught the thief. But the way they use is not right. On the other hand, the thief got their karma by stealing the dogs and sell to meat market. Despite the cruel way that the villagers treated the two men, can see nowadays more and more people love their pet, and willing to do anything for their pet. Hopefully it is a good cause, not only loving their pet, but all animals instead, so that less animal will be slaughtered and served on dining table. _/\_
I do not suggest anyone to violence even to people who sell dog meat to restaurants.
There is some silver lining, and that it habits are changing the Chinese seem to care more of about their pets, so thinking of their dogs as pets, is quite a change in psyche and behaviour towards furry animals.
I can’t believe that there are still people who are acting uncivilized and inhumane. We are now in the 21st century and some of us know that animals can feel pain just like us.
In the end the dognappers got what they deserved when they were caught and beaten by the villagers.
I really hope that people will stop killing and abusing animals for their own sake.
I am not going to say that these men deserved their punishment because I believe that they should have been handled more professionally and appropriately. At the same time I am not sympathetic because those men were terrible as they stole lives and were killing members of families and companions to other people, that is like someone drugging and killing your baby and selling them to cannibals. I also think that this punishment was almost appropriate because most people will not see their crimes as serious because they are ‘Just Animals’ to most people, people that do not understand. Maybe it should have been handled differently, maybe not.
Someone just has to teach these dog thieves a lesson, otherwise we will never stop this violent and those beloved pet dogs will keep missing and kidnaped. Just cant imagine how terrible it would be when the dog owner found out their pet went missing, killed violently and ended up on the table. Chinese government must play an important role in stopping animal cruelty, especially killing dogs for their meat.
Most of the time when people resort to taking things into their own hands, things will get out control as people are driven by their emotions rather than logic. Hence, we have a situation where excessive force was used and even the police were not able to do anything at the blatant disregard of the law by the mob. The situation only reached an end when the relatives of the 2 men undertook to pay the compensation demanded by the mob.
Whilst it appears that such actions by the mob against the 2 men are righteous or to protect but if we really examine the situation, such brutal force beatings are also driven by their emotions and attachments. They are really also triggered by the outrage that arose due to their dogs/pets being drugged/killed by those men; or reaction to the possible threat that it could happen to their dogs/pets. If their dogs/pets were not affected, it is likely there wouldn’t be such riled up strong reactions.
Of course what the 2 men had done were not only despicable and wrong and the above does not excuse the actions of the 2 men. It is only right and fair that both men face the repercussion of their wrongful actions.
However, leaving aside the issue on bad karma, beating them to a pulp doesn’t address the core of the matter – which is the demand for dog meat. After all, even after such flogging of the 2 men by the mob and it being publicised in social media, there will still be people either desperate or greedy enough to attempt similar stunts (perhaps in a more discreet manner) if there is high demand for dog meat as then, it remains a lucrative way of earning money.
Treating the off-hand symptom and not the cause of the problem doesn’t really work in the long run. Hopefully, with more awareness, the demand for dog meat or any meat for that matter will continuously lessen and there will not be any such similar incidences in future.
Thank you Rinpoche for this article.
If we believe in cause and effect, they dog-nappers got it coming. They created the cause to be beaten as they had beaten and killed so many dogs and were still doing it. But, unfortunately the locals did not keep a calm mind and stop the violence. Their emotions were running high and the lack of spiritual guidance has hindered their compassion and kindness in coming forth and let the police take over the case.
Chinese culture had been turned upside down by the communists and the Cultural Revolution put the last nail on the coffin. Unless, the government makes another conscious effort to reintroduce culture and spirituality to the people, they will become very cold and hard.
Maybe, that’s why the government is encouraging the old religion of Buddhism.
Instant Karma…you get what you sowed!
The dog thieves in my opinion got what they deserved not because I am advocate it but because the karma they created. in addition, killing will generate karma to be killed, and to have a habit to kill. It means a single act of killing will lead to endless results of killing and being killed. This is the sad and very scary.
Like Pastor David said, the people of China experience extreme poverty and wealth within a single lifetime, hence, they are very much in need of spiritual grounding. Otherwise, this “wealth” and whatever happiness they have is very temporary. True happiness comes from spiritual realisation. Wealth is neutral. It depends on how we see wealth and what we do with it.
Mainland chinese these days are respected for their wealth and loathed for their lack of social etiquette in almost equal measures. This is brought about by the cultural revolution and the destruction of many cultural and intellectual aspects of Chinese society during that bleak period.
Due to a mixture of having lived through extreme poverty and then quickly attaining wealth without the grounding spiritual belief system has lead to such a society. That good thing is that spirituality, kindness and compassion is very much a part of society and the cultural background of the Chinese in the old days. Hence, it is just a matter of time before people start to look beyond materialism.
Violence for violence should not be the way to go. Yet the two dog-nappers and thieves who had ruthlessly and callously drugged innumerable dogs, and killed them so violently by hitting them on the head ,had it coming for them.
Yet what the villagers did to two dog-thieves will probably not act as a deterrent to others who are bent on a similar purpose.
The best way to put an end to the miserable dog-for-meat trade is for all to stop eating dog meat. No demand – no supply. The most powerful way to put an end to the killing of animals for consumption , is for all to stop eating meat or stop demanding for fur or skin .Otherwise, animals will continue to be killed, as long as long as there is a demand for their meat, their fur or for them to be used in experiments or for sport.
In the meanwhile, we need to continue creating an awareness against killing and harming of animals and any form of animal abuse.
Thank you Rinpoche for this article.
That’s the real face of Chinese people! Both parties (the thieves and the angry mob) are disgusting! I’ve been living in China for several years and experienced so many ugly situations with Chinese people. I’m not a racist (I’m a mixed 3rd culture kid) and have friends from all over the world. During the past years living in China I met a lot of Chinese people and had the opportunity to explore their culture and mentality. I’m really sad to say that most of the Chinese people are just rude and ruthless, uncivilized people who only worship money! This article proves it again. Money is the most important thing in the world for Chinese people. There are so many other terrible stories about Chinese families killing, cheating and beating just in the name of money. You can search the web. I truly hope for the good people in China that it will change some day. At the moment I don’t see it happening so soon, unfortunately.
It is definitely true that karma came and “hit” those 2 guys when the angry mob was formed.
Frankly, I do not agree with such violent acts.. but it also sends a very strong message to all who kill and eat dog meat, or even abuse animals.
I do hope those 2 learned their lessons and do not commit such sinful actions anymore.
There can always be peaceful means to end violence against animals.
First and foremost, I personally do not condone act of violence. And we should not. Even though in the course of history, it is not uncommon for people to take justice into their own hands especially when they do not see any better alternatives than their known way. Strangely, human’s sense of justice is selective and twisted. On one end, we have angry villagers here acting out on animals kidnappers in the most violent mob act seen in recent times; on the other end, we have a whole town that celebrates the killing and manslaughter of dogs while they shunned away people who tried to save the dogs in a vehement manner. I certainly hope the brutality faced by these 2 evildoers can serve as a wake up call to the butcher in Yulin.
Thank you very much Rinpoche for this article.
I can imagine how terrible it must feel if my beloved pet dog ends up on someone’s dinner table! I’d be shocked, devastated and at the same time outraged. From that angle, I can understand why these people acted the way they did. Violence is not the answer, it’s true. But without any other kind of deterrent, what else can they do but take the law into their own hands? At least they are standing up at their own risk and doing something about. Beating someone up may not be right, but if by doing so you save a few other lives and maybe make a strong enough point that could act as a deterrent for further abuse and loss of more lives, maybe it is the lesser of 2 evils and not necessarily all bad. There’s no perfection in samsara. Of course they could have toned down the blows!
As mentioned by Rinpoche, we shouldn’t condone violence against violence. However, it is clear that people are really upset their pets are being drugged and then killed for meat.
Putting the violence aside, we really shouldn’t harm animals in any way. What these people were doing is really bad. They purposely lured the dog and kill them for money. It is tremendous bad karma to say the least.
I really pray that more and more people will become vegetarian, because it will definitely cut the demand. The amount of animals we killed each year is phenomenal, and it is beyond crazy. The negative karma, and the amount of hate energy generated by this killing is going to haunt us one day.
It certainly seem like a case of karma ripening on the two men who so cruelly drugged and stole the dogs from the villagers to the restaurants as meat. I guess they are just experiencing the pain of being beaten as they had beaten the dogs that they killed. I wouldn’t advocate the villagers to beat them as they will create negative karma for themselves but at the same time I wonder if the two men would be afraid to continue stealing and selling dogs if they just had to either sit in jail or pay the fine? Having been the beating, I hope they did learn their lesson that pain inflicted on them is the same pain the dogs felt.
At the same time, if there were no demand for the dog meat or any other meat, then this type of cruelty will not need arise. So with the new regulatory advise by the Chinese Government to reduce eating meat as a nation, it will certainly bring forth the changes that is needed. In these age of advance communication, social media plays an important part in bring unjust to the world’s attention. With the widely circulated outrage shown for the Yu Lin Dog festival in China and that of Korea, the countries’ governing body will need to respond sooner or later to their image clean. May the actions be sooner than later for the sake of the animals’ sufferings.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article on what is currently going on in Southern China.
Dear Rinpoche,
These two men had it coming for them. It is very cruel to go around stealing other people’s pet and selling them to be cooked in restaurants. Those owners could be devastated by their missing pets. On the other hand, the way they kill the dogs is just inhumane. Drugging them and hitting them on the head to kill them shows that they have no compassion for those animals. I would say that Karma had ripened for them to ve beaten up just like the dogs.
However, I do not support the act of abusing them even if they are caught red-handed. By taking the matter into our own hands and beating the thieves is not a clever way to handle it.
Humbly,
Chris Chong
How sad to read about articles like this relating to inhumane act on the dogs just for the sake of their meat. So cruel to hit them on the head and bind their feet. It must be so agonising for these dogs too.
This tradition had been going on for too long and I hope the authorities and the government will do something about this soon like banning of the Yulin Meat Festival for a start. And also to enforce strict laws to those who kidnap the helpless dogs.
I think another way is to educate these people not to eat dog meat or rather any meat so that when the buying stops the killing stops as well.
Laws need to be enforce so that people don’t take the law into their own hands and beat up those who kidnap the dogs no matter how angry they are.
Hopefully this terrible act will stop soon.
Thank you Rinpoche for the above sharing.

Thank you Rinpoche for this article on the inhumane ways dogs are killed for human consumption which is still happening in certain remote part of China. This unremorseful action by the locals is unbecoming especially they are doing it in their own backyard where they live. It clearly defines that greed was their prime motive in these senseless killing because it coincides and wants to capitalize on the profitability with regards to the Yulin dog festival.
It really amazes me why does China still allow such barbaric and savage festival to go on despite international condemnation of such vicious acts of killing these defenseless pets. I think it goes back to the earlier years in some parts of China; the Chinese people there were indoctrinated with unscientific evidence and made to believe that dog meats are good for the human body. As for the more educated Chinese people who are exposed to modern scientific research they have realized that all those were lies fabricated by the profiteers.
I really cannot fathom as to why they resort to killing of the pet’s dogs when they can see that the dogs have eyes that see, ears that hear, brain that can think and have red blood similar to us. The local government within the Yulin County and with the help from central government needs to reeducate these people on the actual scientific facts on dog meat consumption coupled with animals rights campaign. It would be a long haul before we can see some changes. We can only pray and hope that changes can come about in the not too distant future.
This is very inhumane and heartless act. Hope law put them to what they deserve and such actions be banned. This is very cruel. How sad to know!!!!
Sad and cruel… the way they ( thieves ) did to harm those poor dogs. For their own selfishness and greed they drugged and killed those dogs for money. But the dogs owner and the angry, violent mob should not have taken the law in their own hands by causing injuring , beating the thieves in the street.Dog meat has been used for human consumption in China for years. Hope the cruelty of these animal be stop and the authority could stop the Yulin dog meat festival somehow.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this article.
It is very sad to read this article. The act of the dog kidnappers are very cruel. They just hurt, kill and abuse another living beings for money. How inhuman is that?
Nevertheless, I also do not agree with the pets owner applying the violent punishment to the kidnappers either. They cannot act on behalf of the law. Although what the kidnappers did is very wrong, they should have handed them to police and punish them according to the law.
Ultimately, if people stop eating dog meat, without demand there will be no supply. And hopefully this the heinous act would end.
