Good news at Nando’s!
GOOD NEWS! I was having a casual chat with Pastor David last night about vegetarian food and he said he heard Nando’s has vegetarian burgers! I hadn’t heard of this. I was like really?? I asked him to please check! Today he confirmed that certain Nando’s branches does have vegetarian burgers now! Nando’s at 1Utama shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur is serving!!!! Good news!! The manager there is quite accommodating and told Pastor David they are improving their patties as they go along. Nice to hear that. It’s nice to know when some place already have good food but it does not stop them from the attitude of making it even better. This is a good trend that veggie burgers are growing in a major food chain. The more we become vegetarian then there will be more demand and restaurants and grocery shops will supply. (Take note, not all Nando branches carry this-only some, but we can politely email them to have at more branches serve this. Supply and demand is the key. Also ask them to cook the patty longer on the grill so it’s more firm when you order.) You know the McDonald’s in India all serve vegetarian burgers for many years now? The demand is there. Good for India!
In the US, many diners carry this as an option as vegetarian diet is growing because it’s better for our health, complexion and especially our environment. We must care.
Not eating animals is not necessarily a choice for the religious, but a choice of conscience and caring for the environment. Animal farming is contributing very much to the green house effect destroying our atmosphere. Do not contribute to animals being beaten, tied, slaughtered and killed just for us to taste something ‘good’. Fried blood and cooked flesh are not good because it caused pain. Go visit the slaughter house weekly. Important. No matter what others say, we ourselves must have some principles and not ‘fail’ in everything using others as an excuse. Always be firm in our convictions. I mean principles that protect others from pain. If we are vegetarian, remain so. If we are considering, then research more on the benefits for ourselves, the environment, our planet, our children and the animals. Be firm in helping others and our planet.
Enjoy eating foods that do not have innocent animals killed, murdered, slaughtered and butchered as a direct result. Putting a knife into their flesh or cutting off their head or skinning them or plucking their feathers or chopping them creates so much pain. Don’t create pain please. Please be a good human because we can control whether we butcher them or not. Let’s not hurt any animals ever.
Have some principles of creating a zero pain free area around ourselves. That would be a great way to live. Zero pain free zone around ourselves. That means wherever we go and live, we create no pain for anyone or any animal. We create no physical or mental pain for any other being.

P.S. I was just told that in Bangsar a place called Burger Junkyard also serves vegetarian burgers! Great!

Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing this news with us. It is good to see the fast food chains start to recognise their vegetarian market. This certainly gives us more choices while we can hold our vows. On the other hand, vegetarianism is being more popular and vegetarian meals having more demand now means that more and more people are choosing to have meatless meals. More animals are saved.
Humbly,
Chris
Nandos making vegetarian burgers is certainly good news.
People need to take a break from meat, not only does eating meat take lives, but also takes our lives!! Research has shown that eating meat can increase the risk of getting infectious disease like cancer and other deadly diseases. Since most of us only care for ourselves we shouldn’t eat something that could kill us right?
More and more people are becoming vegetarian that’s why more and more mostly meat restaurants have to create Meat free dishes. That is truly good news as it promotes vegetarianism even more.
It’s good that Nando’s serves vegetarian dishes now because it will encourage people in some ways to become a vegetarian, even if it doesn’t, at least for that one meal, one less animal was eaten.
I first had the veggie burger about a year back, it was really good, the patty was compact and the ingredients do not crumble apart very easily. I personally like food that is ‘clean’ and not messy, clean in the sense that it doesn’t crumble easily and make the whole plate messy.
A couple of months back, I had the same veggie burger again in the same Nando’s restaurant, the consistency wasn’t there anymore. The patty was soft and not hot, quality control was horrible. They have a new dish now which is a veggie wrap, it doesn’t have a patty, what they put inside is some cheese, onions, some pickled veggies etc. The only I don’t like about it is that, it’s served cold, for someone like me who likes hot food, it was kind of scary. But, overall the wrap was pretty good. They should really look into their consistency and QC.
Sorry Nando’s – this burger is good but it’s not the best. I’ve had it at two different outlets and both times, it tasted alright but it wasn’t cooked through and made me feel a little sick after eating. So it’s definitely a step in the right direction but it’s not quite there yet.
The fries are still good though!
In recent years, we’ve seen an expansion of vegetarian offerings in restaurants throughout Kuala Lumpur and I’m really happy to see that there is a growing acknowledgement of the spending power of vegetarians, and an increasing willingness to cater towards that. Vegetarians should speak up and not feel shy about our dietary choices. We need to let restaurants know that it is okay for them to cater to us, and that they won’t lose their customer base simply because they added some vegetarian options. (If we vegetarians aren’t going to tell the restaurants, then who will?)
And as the economy suffers and people are cutting back, they are also cutting back on their spending and on their eating. Vegetarians are in general cheaper to cater for; providing good vegetarian options in dining establishments means widening your options for carnivores in general who still want to eat out and still want to eat good.
If a nation is judged on its worth based on how it treats its animals, I would like to think that Malaysia in general is moving in the right direction.
But please Nando’s, fix the cooking of your burgers and get the consistency right!

The more types of vege meals that are introduced at restaurant outlets ultimately mean less animals will be killed for our palletes. No man is an island in this world, actions done on our behalf do have repercussions for us, creating pain in others will eventually result in pain for ourselves…
This is definitely a great news! I have tried they veggie burgers a few times and they tasted really good! It’s amazing that they are doing this, it shows that the authority cared enough to come up with this menu. I hope more restaurants like this will come up with more vegetarian menus, we need to save our earth or no one else will. The sensation our taste buds give us is just temporary, when you’ve finished your meal, it’s gone. Do not hurt the animals indirectly to satisfy your taste buds. Treat every sentient being with equality please.
I do not view this as a complete win but I see it as a step in the right direction, a step can start a trend and habits to develop to hopefull have a more vegetarian world. Whenever I try to convince people to become vegetarian,I’m ask them to have small steps like one vegetarian day a week or one meal a week so that it develops and they are getting comfortable with the idea of being vegetarian so one day it develops and they are vegetarian. That is how i view this situation, as a seed to grow.
Why should we be vegetarian? We should save the animals that are being killed in the billions and they die in such horrible ways to satisfy such small needs that humans want. They didn’t do anything. They are just killed and they are brutally killed too. They are like us, they feel pain, love, fun and they have survival instincts like us, just because we have different bodies doesn’t mean we are that different. We are all on earth and we are all living, but humans are cruel and we done care about others because we give ourselves the right to kill even though we know if we were there, we would be crying for help and it won’t come unless the world invests in vegetarianism because if you were there, would you of like it?
It is good that more and more restaurants are serving vegetarian food and that Nando’s which is famous for their chicken and peri peri sauce has vegetarian burgers on the menu.
I stopped going to Nando’s after I stooped eating meat few years back but now I have a reason to go there again. I have tried the veggie burger and it is very good especially accompanied with the sauce.
I just ate Nando’s vegetarian burger and it’s really good. This is not the first I tried but I was really shocked to know that Nando’s has vegetarian burgers when I first heard it. Because Nando’s is really famous only for their chickens well most of them are chicken. It’s really cool and delicious, I can’t wait for more fast food that has vegetarian choices on their menu. More and more people are becoming vegetarians as more vegetarian food are added to restaurant menus. I believe we are getting closer to a certain stage where the humans in the whole wide world will eventually become vegetarians.
This is definitely great news for Nando’s lovers who are vegetarian 😉 gives me a reason to meet my friend’s there without having to eat any chicken meat.
There is another burger joint in Melaka and Singapore called Fat Boy’s Burger that serves vegetarian burgers too.
The teachings of Lord Buddha says that, “becoming a vegetarian will cultivate one’s loving kindness and compassion.By not eating the meat of animals, one will reduce one’s karma of killings and strengthen one’s sympathy towards the sufferings of animals!” Animals are actually intelligent living beings, as demonstrated in Rinpoche’s Blog, “Amazing & Sad,” where the 150kg fugitive pig, was kneeling down and “praying” before a Buddhist temple in China, and he only moved on after a group of monks chanted to it! And, this episode happened on the Day of confession on Buddha repentance Day! What an astounding conincidence. Animals are actually like us humans, and many can act in ways that communicate or suggest their feelings. In today’s enlightened society, it is time for us to eliminate the impact of sufferings of animals in ending up on our dinner plate. We humans should adopt a “Vegetarian Lifestyle”, whereby one can reduce one’s karma of killing and strengthen one’s sympathy towards the pain and sufferings of all living animal beings! Our heartiest congratulations and gratitude to Nando for the great sympathetic choice.
It is just great news that more places are now vegetarian friendly. Even willing to make vegetarian dishes at request when people request for it. I am very happy for that as not only is it more convenient for the vegetarians when they dine, but also it shows that people are more acceptable for vegetarian diets.
With bigger food chains like Nandos that are acceptive and providing for the group of vegetarian, it means that more and more people are being vegetarians. The demand is growing, people do understand the value of not killing animals and taking meat in our diet and that is very good. More people are able to understand and break free for the misconception that we had for thousands of years that we would need meat in order to stay healthy. More people are now aware that we are actually able to get all the nutrients that we would need from vegetables.
This is great. There are many restaurants that provide vegetarian meals in their menu too(for some, you have to ask for it). Last week I went to Victoria Station and they served vege meals as well (I am surprised!!!). I have to check out the Nando’s outlet near my place as well. Thanks for sharing Rinpoche.
So happy to know Nando’s serves vegetarian burger! And it’s near to my place 🙂 I love burger, but whenever go to restaurant with burger menu – fast food restaurant or not – I normally leave without order anything. Even Subway in India they serve SIX types of vegetarian sandwich, here in Malaysia only one type…
Hoping more and more restaurants serves delicious-vegetarian food, including burgers..and with more choices. Business is business, so long as there are more asking for vegetarian food – guilty free and healthy food, why not serving?
I absolutely love when QSR’s(Quick Service Restaurants) go vegetarian or serve many veggie options. There is one out here that is exclusive to the pacific northwest called Burgerville, I actually worked there for a few months, but quit due to my alcohol addiction a few years ago. Thank Buddha I stopped drinking… Anyway Burgerville contracted their veggie patty’s from one very determined lady who owns her own vegetarian food business. The woman’s business is apparently flourishing very well due to the Burgerville contract. Its nice because it adds another very special layer to the experience of buying a veggie burger from Burgerville in the Oregon and Washington area.
Here is the article from 7 years ago when It first was announced:

I’ve had veggie pitta with veggie filling at nando’s too. It was delicious with their spicy sauces.
Great news indeed, now more and more restaurants are aware the need to serve vegetarian foods, as the society is getting more conscious of the benefit of Vegetarian meals, and also meat free diet that do not involve animals being slaughtered for our taste buds.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this great news, now we have new place to look forward to for vegetarian meals.
