I heard her voice!
There are people who find it difficult to recognize the voice of their spouse or even their children over the phone… but what about your dog… Would you be able to recognize your dog from his/her bark?
If you truly love your dog, you will know everything about them – their smell, body language, facial expression, favorite foods and toys … and even the sound of their voice! In the case of Shane Wilson, it was the sound of a bark that reunited him with his beloved dog, who had been missing for almost a week.
I love happy news like this especially when it involves animals. Always treat animals the right way and with utmost love and care. Too many times we come across news of horrible abuse and torture of animals and pets… and the story of Lucy and Shane Wilson is a breath of fresh air.
What would you do if your dog went missing? Would you make an effort to find your dog (and for how long), or would you accept it and just let go?

Man Reunited With Dog After Identifying Her By Her Bark
COMMERCE, GA – Shane Wilson’s prayers were answered when he received a telephone call Tuesday morning.
The caller told him she and a friend found his dog Lucy. “I don’t know what to say other than I’m a lucky man,” Wilson said.
Six days ago, Lucy jumped out of the back of Wilson’s pickup truck at Banks Crossing in Commerce. He has been driving 30 miles from his home in Stephens County to Commerce to look for Lucy every day since.
Lucy was found by two strangers. She was wandering along I-85 when Becky Davis and Tiffany Scoggins spotted her.
The friends were getting breakfast at the Cracker Barrel in Commerce when they saw Lucy. They walked down the exit ramp to get to her.
“We pulled out the treats and she just let me put the leash around her neck,” Davis said.
Davis and Scoggins had no idea who Lucy was even though Wilson had posted flyers all over Commerce. They took her to a local vet who recognized the dog.
“They immediately recognized her and they were like, ‘she’s the dog’,” Davis said.
Lucy is a service dog who helps Wilson, who lost a leg in a motorcycle crash five years ago. When Scoggins called him to say that she found Lucy, he was leery because he has had so many false hopes over the past six days.
Wilson told Scoggins to hold a dog treat up and say “Lucy, speak.” She did and Lucy barked. “I heard her bark and I said I’m on the way and I kind of hung up on her,” Wilson said.
“He was so happy, he was hysterical,” Davis said. “He immediately knew and said ‘stay right there, I’m coming’.”
Wilson offered a $500 reward to anyone who found Lucy. Davis and Scoggins would have none of it. “It was worth everything,” Scoggins said. “That was worth a million dollars, it made our day,” Davis said.

The bond between Lucy and Wilson is just incredible. It is amazing to see how a human can bond with an animal with so much love and care between both of them. Dogs are truly man’s best friend and they can help us to learn how to love someone unconditionally. If every dog owner in the world can treat their pets just like how Wilson did, there will be less sufferings in the world. But of course, if human will treat all animals like how they will treat the dogs, the world will be a better place.
Wonderful story of Shane Wilson, found his furry beloved dog Lucy, by his voice. Amazing not everyone could ….. His beloved dog have been missing for a week and found by two kind strangers. These kind ladies posted flyers all over Commerce and took Lucy to a local vet who then recognized the dog that belong to Shane. Its a wonderful and happy reunion for Shane and Lucy, looking at the video paints a thousand words.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing .
A very touching story. It’s true that if we care for our pets and treat them like our family , we will surely recognise his voice. We should care for all living beings and not segregate. Every living beings want love and care. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this story.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this touching video. It is indeed a happy ending story. It is amazing that the Wilson could recognise the bark of his dog, Lucy. Sometimes you really need to be very close to your own pet to know everything about them even the sound of their bark.
With folded palms,
Vivian
This is a short and moving story, and I hope this will promote more people to be kinder to animals, not only because some humans are interdependent on animals but because animals are sentient beings. Just because they have no voice to complain or have the capacity to demand better treatment is not a good reason for us to harm and hurt them, animals are just as conscious as we are to pain and love.
This is a happy ending story, which fills with love and compassion. I truly respect Wilson as he is able to recognize Lucy’s voice from the phone. All the dog owners should learn more from Wilson for his sincere care and kindness towards Lucy. On the other side, both Davis and Scoggins have shown their generosity and selflessness to help Wilson and Lucy without expecting any returns. May both Davis and Scoggins meet with Dharma and gain ultimate happiness in current life and many future lifetimes.
Great observation for Shane to notice Lucy bark and his determination for not losing hope despite so many false hopes.
It is really amazing that Wilson could recognize Lucy’s voice over the phone. These kind of cases are quite hard to believe as a dogs tone is a bit hard to recognize as they do not make a lot of noise like us.
What’s more we don’t usually talk to them so that does not familiarize us with their tone. Because we communicate a lot with our friends and families their voice is easier to recognize, due to that even when we are blindfolded and they speak to us, we can tell who it is. But it is just the opposite for dogs and other animals, if a dog was in a crowd with other dogs we would not know who was barking.
This post shows that if you actually love your dog you can recognize them from any perspective.
However in order to have this close bond you must treat your dog kindly and with respect, otherwise you could ruin the relationship.
Another thing i wish to say is that the people who found Lucy were really good people who did the job out of kindness refusing the 500 dollar reward. These kind of people are the ones that are hard to find as not many people will refuse the reward.
It is such an relieve to witness this, I am very happy for Lucy that she was found and was sent back to Wilson safely, imagine that kind of excitement and relieve Wilson had. Since a very young age, I have been living with dogs and I love them! The first dog we had when I grew up was a Shih Tzu, her name was Jessie. She was a very lovely, sweet and intelligent girl. Very well trained, except for the fact that she liked to jump on our bed which my uncle didn’t like it and forbid her to do so. I find dogs very intelligent, kind and loving, they are exactly like humans and sometimes even better than us, except that they don’t speak human language. They are very sensible and will always know what to do to cheer you up and to company you so you don’t feel “lonely”, they are the loveliest creatures on earth, I love them now and will always love them. I wish to have my own doggie someday, very much! I sometimes imagine how spoilt would my dog be if I had one hehehe!
1) I extremely love dogs, I have loved them ever since the moment that I was born. And I’m very happy that Wilson is finally reunited with Lucy. It’s really awesome that the relationship between him and Lucy is so strong to the point where he is even able to recognize her voice. Don’t you think their relationship is truly admirable?
2) In my opinion, how we treat other animals and our pets actually resembles what we are capable of doing to other people. A lot of habits starts from small things. Nobody is capable of killing someone from the moment that they were born. Most serial killers started killing small animals when they were younger and a lots of them feel happy doing it. As time passes, these habits becomes worse, they will start to move on and kill bigger animals because they the feelings they had will start to fade as they kill the more animals of the same size. It is really terrifying what habits can do to a person. I don’t know exactly how they think like because I am not one but I believe this is one of the major ways why serial killers are capable of killing people.
3) How rare is it to find people like Davis and Tiffany Scoggins which didn’t want his money after finding Lucy? Like Wilson has said in the report, there were several cases where people would actually fake to have found his dog mostly because they wanted to cheat Wilson. (Remember the flyers he gave out saying that he will pay anyone 500 dollars if they found Lucy). What am I trying to say is that even though there are plenty of good people out in the world but we always have to remember that there are also certain people with bad intentions in this world. Not everyone or everything is necessarily good.
The bond between a human and a human is the same of the bond between a animals and a human, even animals and animals. As long as the relationship is genuine, it is a real as a human relationship. Because we are all creatures of this earth and we can relate to each other. So that is why this man could recognise his dogs bark. It is a real relationship.
Also, it is a two way street. The dog barked to show the owner that she is there. She knew he would listen and he knew that it was her. Again, it is a real relationship. Animals are smart, can express themselves and feel things too so just because they have different ways to show it, that doesn’t mean that they are stupid.
It is a touching story. I know that there are bonds between human and animal. They have different styles of relationships like human ones. We don’t have much differences see? We just have to connect.
What else can be said , dogs are men’s best friend especially for someone like Wilson . He’s very lucky indeed . Thanks to Davis & Scoggins . A happy reunion , Thank you Rinpoche for this touching story
It is amazing to see that through the love, care and time spent together Shane Wilson was able to recognize that the two ladies had actually found his dog and not some prank played by some irresponsible people.
As the saying goes that a dog is a man’s best friend, this story just goes to show that if we spend time with our dogs, treat them well, take care of them and shower them with love and what not, they in turn would be loyal to us.
It is something like practicing a give and take situation, when we do good for our dog, they in turn would do something good for us because of the good karma we accumulated by doing good for the dog by taking good care of it and not ignoring it or being mean to it.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this heartwarming story!
I love my dogs, very very much. They will always have a special place in my heart. But honestly, i do not think i would be able to know them well enough that i know how their barks sound like. That kind of love for me, is a whole other level.
Dogs are loving creatures. Thats why they are referred to as mans best friend. They should always be cared for and loved by their owners. This story really touched me. That mans unconditional love for his dog is truly touching and moving. He went out of his comfort zone to be reunited with his dog.
Also, the two teenagers who helped are amazing people. They are compassionate enough to help an animal in need and this lead to the dog being reunited with his owner. The world needs more people like this. And the best part, the two teenagers didn’t even want the reward money. They were humble and were already happy with just helping a dog in need. Very touching, and something that people need to learn.
Well-said Julien. You’ve said it all.
What a lovely story for a change! The reunion is really heart warming, the fact that her owner can recognised her bark is so amazing. It is normal for a dog to love its owner unconditionally, but this story is very special because the dog’s owner reciprocate the same level of love to her.
A happy ending is always welcomed 🙂
Dear Rinpoche, love this happy reunion story. One can actually feel the happiness of the owner and the dog, thank you for sharing this touching post.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for this lovely story with a happy ending – Wilson, being reunited with his dog Lucy, who had gone missing for 6 days! So close is the bond between the two that Wilson was able to identify Lucy by her bark!
Lucy, a service dog, has been so well-trained as to be able to serve Wilson and cater to his many needs as a person who is walking around with only 1 leg.
What a great companion to have!
Thank goodness, Lucy was found by two kind and lovely people, who were quick-thinking to o- to take Lucy to a local vet. Because of that, Wilson was able to be reunited with his dog within a relatively short period .
When you think of how the people in this story love animals and compare them with the cruel people who abused and hurt the street-dog(in “What some face in one day”) so callously , you wish that this world were only populated by the former, by the Wilsons and the Davises and the Scoggins .
Pets especially dogs can really be someone’s best friend. They can be trained to fulfill many tasks for their owner like in this example for Wilson who lost a leg. Another example is people who are blind can be guided outdoor by their dog.
After seeing the homeless dog, living on the street this is such a pleasure to see.
Thank You Rinpoche for sharing this with us.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this heartwarming post very joyous to look at the reunion of the dog and his owner it really bright up my day.
This happy ending of a heartwarming reunion of the owner and his pet dog really make my day! Thank you Rinpoche for sharing
Dear Rinpoche , Thank you for this beautiful reunion story. It is important for hunan to bond with their pets in order for owner to understand the needs of their pet. It is through bonding that one can interprate their pets every move from bark to gestures to eye contact. The pet in turn will also understand the needs of their human parents via voice , gesture and eye contact. That’s when the beauty of human and pet bonding become the beauty of nature . I have 3 lovely dogs and everyday I never fail to be amazed by how they can understand me and me understanding them just via eye contact and body posture.
Typo error … human not hunan
Such a lovely reunion and a happy ending… especially after watching the video on A street dog’s life, this news puts a smile on my face.
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing this happy reunion story of Wilson and Lucy…… I agree with Rinpoche that if we give love and care to our pets we would know their sound and movements. My cat Tris makes different tune of meows with her moods. One for when she is hungry, one when she would like attention and one for when she is annoyed with us giving her too much attention. She would be the first thing my children and I pick up the moment we arrive home. Tris has a very sweet nature for a cat, very swift and flexible with her movements. We will continue to give her our love and care. May she always be blessed and protected by Dorje Shugden.
Lovely reunion.
