Health Benefits of Tomatoes + Tomato Nutrition Facts: More Reasons to Love This Low-Calorie, Skin-Health-Boosting Fruit
Believed to have first proliferated in the regions of South America, particularly in the western half of Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia, tomatoes are known as one of the most popular foods in the world.
Based on archaeological findings, they were cultivated by early South American cultures like the Aztecs and Mayans hundreds and hundreds of years before Spanish explorers brought them to the shores of the New World. Interestingly, the word “tomato” may have come from the Aztec term, tomatl, which roughly translates to “puffing or swelling fruit.”
Health Benefits of Tomatoes
Here are just some of the awesome reasons why tomatoes should become a regular in your smoothie recipes!
Tomatoes Keep Cancer at Bay: Scientific research shows that tomatoes are packed with a very potent antioxidant called alpha-tomatine that is found to significantly cut back unwanted inflammation and chronic oxidative stress in the body, which can eventually lead to cancer if not dealt with properly. Alpha-tomatine is currently considered in the medical field as a natural deterrent against prostate, pancreatic, lung, endometrial, breast and colon cancer.
Tomatoes Prevent Cardiovascular Problems: There are very high levels of the carotenoid lycopene in tomatoes that has the ability to lessen the chances of lipid peroxidation in the bloodstream, which can affect the quality of the essential nutrients sent to the heart and promote the accumulation of plaque along the linings of veins and arteries. When this happens, the cardiovascular system becomes more prone to issues like atherosclerosis and aneurysm sooner or later.
Tomatoes Inhibit Bone Damage Among Post-Menopausal Women: A recent study reveals that lycopene inhibits the sudden weakening of the bones of women who are well into their post-menopausal phase. It has been discovered that frequent consumption of lycopene maintained the resilience of bone tissue, which prevented the onset of osteoporosis, osteomalacia and similar conditions.
Tomatoes Keep the Eyes Healthy: Tomatoes are loaded with eye-nourishing vitamin A and various eye-friendly flavonoids, such as zeaxanthin that filters out ultra-violet rays to greatly reduce the risk of macular degeneration in the long run. Consuming tomatoes on a regular basis also keeps dry and itchy eyes in check.
Tomatoes Maintain Optimum Nerve Signals: A single cup of tomato juice contains approximately 500 milligrams of potassium, which is needed by the system to keep the transmission of nerve signals in the brain running smoothly. Potassium also plays a significant role in maintaining the right balance of body fluids as well as regulating ideal blood pressure and heart rate levels by counteracting the effects of excess sodium in the bloodstream.
Tomatoes Keep the Skin Glowing: Lycopene promotes the production of pro-collagen molecules that help maintain the natural elasticity and suppleness of the skin. It is not uncommon to see lycopene as a vital component in a number of beauty creams and other cosmetic products commercially available these days.

More Tomato Notes:
- Tomatoes are still referred to as “love apples” in some countries because they were traditionally deemed as an aphrodisiac by various cultures.
- Medical experts share that regularly having a bite of tomatoes may improve your sleeping cycles since the folic acid in them can inhibit the formation of excess homocysteine in the body. Homocysteine is a chemical that prevents the brain from releasing sufficient amounts of sleep-inducing serotonin.
- An average-sized tomato contains no fat at all and only packs a mere 22 calories. This makes it a very good diet staple if you’re looking to shed excess pounds

Tomatoes are definitely my favorite vegetable. I can them daily. I would love to have a large tomato garden in Kechara Forest Retreat and pluck them fresh to consume daily.
I cannot believe I used to hate tomatoes as a kid! It’s the weirdest thing. I absolutely refused to eat them in any form except as ketchup or pasta sauce. Then one day, I developed a huge craving for them…and it was in the middle of winter, when tomatoes were out of season -_- to this day, I love eating them and to this day, I’m still hoping the same thing will happen to me with celery…
I feel like I should elaborate on the point about tomatoes keeping cancer at bay. Yes, it helps to but did you know that a cooked tomato is much better for this? It seems counter-intuitive that a cooked-something is better than when it is in its raw state, but it has something to do with a particular nutrient (I think it was lycopene) that is amped up once it is cooked. That means ketchup is very good for this but you have to make sure the ketchup is also low on sugar and sodium, to experience the full benefits of your tomato intake.
But nutrient, schnutrient, the stuff’s delicious and everyone should eat it!
I love tomato soups, tomato cooked with egg Shanghainese style….
Tomatoes are totally one of my favourite fruits, whether sour or sweet, the only thing I don’t like is ketchup, it’s weird I know hehehe. Tomatoes are high in vitamins and are high in nutrition values. It is not easy to grow tomatoes as they require a lot more things compared to other general fruits and vegetables, especially in country like Malaysia where humidity is a big issue.
I have always wanted to plant tomatoes because I like challenges hehe, currently we are working on a farming project, once everything is running smoothly, I will definitely take up the “challenge” to grow tomatoes. This is a very informational blog post, thank You Rinpoche.
Not only are tomatoes naturally delicious, all the added health benefits are bonus. There are so many ways to eat tomatoes too. Just in its raw form, it can be used to make juice, salad, sandwiches, salsa to name a few. Without tomatoes, I would not know what to make of Italian and Spanish cuisine LOL.
There are so many species of tomatoes grown around the world and they can even in cultivated using hydroponic system. Tomato is also one of the high vitamin C foods including bell peppers, dark leafy greens, kiwifruit, broccoli, berries, citrus fruits, peas, and papayas.
Tomatoes are one of the most common garden fruits in the United States and, along with zucchini, have a reputation for outproducing the needs of the grower but the largest producer is China.
Tomatoes are easily available at the market or even in any shopping malls. It is cheap, easy to prepare and it can be used in various ways, be it a simple dish of veges, soup, pasta, dessert or even as salad dressings!
