No Escape
The ‘Ocean Drover’ is regarded by the live export industry as being one of the ‘best’ vessels on the water. But right now, animals confined within it are suffering and dying.
After breaking down four weeks ago, just days after leaving Australia, the ship has been travelling at a reduced speed – extending an already long and arduous journey for the 48,000 sheep and cattle on board. On Friday it was revealed that the Ocean Drover had to make an emergency stop near Djibouti, Africa, after running low on feed for the animals, and now the exporter has confirmed the mounting deaths on board – still days from their final destination (http://yhoo.it/1galqk6). One can only imagine what the surviving animals are enduring.
The exporter has expressed dismay at not achieving their usual ‘success rate’ but this is an industry that judges ‘success’ by the number of animals still standing at the end of a voyage. Sheep suffer and die on every live export ship that leaves Australia and their deaths are considered just a routine part of doing business. The animals onboard the Ocean Drover may be beyond our help. But don’t let their suffering be in vain – your MP needs to hear their story. Please take 2 minutes to call your Federal Member TODAY to express your utter dismay at yet another live export tragedy. Get their phone number and start dialing at www.bit.ly/1mn0Q7B

The vessel Ocean Drover is the world’s largest, purpose-built livestock carrier. The 48,000 sheep and cattle onboard the Ocean Drover had been on a long journey still days from their final destination. The Ocean Drover had to make an emergency stop after running low on feed for the animals. The exporter has confirmed the mounting deaths on board and has expressed dismay over the matters. Sad those animals suffered and died of starvation along the journey. Hopefully more could to be done and in future may the exporters do take note of the sufferings those animals endure.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
Sad to read article of animals suffering and dying…..The troubled live export ship running low on feed for the hundred animals on the way to their next port of call. The exporter has confirmed the deaths of animals on board. Can imagine how those animals suffered on board.feeling hungry……..long journey and died of starvation.
Thank you RInpoche for sharing to create more awareness not to harm animals.Love and care for them.
It is really sad to know of that this so called “best” ship is literally a living hell.
All this didn’t need to happen if we humans did not create a demand for wool, meat and other animal products. If there wasn’t any demand these animals could be grazing in open fields of grass and being free.
Instead we humans create so much demand for animal products that these animals have to go through so much suffering prior to boarding this ship and when such a scenario that the ship breaks down, it makes the animals suffer even more than they already are. Even if the ship was going at it’s normal speed.. putting animals in a ship with them not having a single clue of what is happening is terrifying, It is like getting kidnapped, dumped in to a car and then taken somewhere to be tortured to death.
Thank you RInpoche for sharing this short yet heart wrenching post.
If we truly want to generate compassion, we should visualize the suffering of each being on board the Ocean Rover. As we visualize each sheep or cow standing in all its filth and manure, without water and starving and in the heat, we should be able to feel how each is truly feeling – the pain and the fear. Also the dying process of each. Only in that way can we develop genuine altruistic compassion.
Then when I am about to eat the meat of an animal, all these images of fear, anguish and pain, all the screaming and the tears flowing down from them, all the horrible slaughter, with blood gushing out of the bodies writhing in pain, should grip be , so much so, I won’t be able to eat a morsel of the meat in front of me.
Please reduce the frequently of eating meat. If we don’t eat meat, we will reduce the demand and supply of meat in the markets. Thus, the transportation of meat will be reduced because exporters cannot gain profit from shipping the animals. By doing this, we can reduce the suffering of animals.
Om Mani Padme Hung. May those animals able to take a good rebirth and meet Dharma in their future lives. All animals deserve to live and we should treat them equally. I really respect vegetarians because they have compassion to walk the talk.
This dedign is spectacular! You obviously know how to keep a
reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well,
almost…HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it.
Too cool!
People choose to be ignorant about the suffering of animals in order to satisfy the taste bud and selfishly thinking of own earning by selling the animals in their suffering conditions. No one wants the pain and sufferings. No animal wants the same pain and sufferings too. Why we put ourselves different from animals?
As an enlightened society, its time we broaden our circle of compassion. Animals are realistically intelligient living beings. They too can feel pains and sufferings like humans do. Yes they are like us human beings, and act in ways which suggest their feelings. People who have interacted specifically with animals will vow that they are like us and can communicate their feelings too! To elimunate the deep sufferings of animals’ pains, we should all compassionately adopt a vegetarian lifestyle! This practice will allow us the opportunity to think about the everyday cruelty and the ruthlessness of the killing of animals for them to end up on our dinner plates. As George Bernard Shaw has said, “We are the living graves of murdered beasts, slaughtered to satisfy our appetites. How can we hope in this world to attain the peace we say we are so anxious for?” We should take this seriously, especially in our quest to bring peace, harmony, and unity into this World. It is said that more than 8 billion of animals are killed in U.S.A each year for food, what will be the rest of the world in Totality! As also been written, “As the nation sows, so shall it reap.” Therefore, to end such cruelty of senseless killings resulting to sufferings of pains to animals, its best to go “VEGETERIAN”. Om mani Padme Hung.
Air France too…sends live animals on their plane.
Animals have no voice, we have. We need to be their voice.
This is so cruel! Their so called “best way” of exploiting the animals has lead to the death of hundreds of lives. Their ways of settling the animals were very poor and irresponsible. If they knew that they had to reduce the speed, they shouldn’t have brought the animals on the ship.
It’s sad to heard about this news. Those sheep are in extremely bad condition. May they have a good rebirth! -The only way for them to escape from suffering.
Is very sad to read news like this imagine all these animals who suffer tremendous pain before they actually died, we human out ignorance and our selfish mind that we do not think of others being pain and suffering like what Rinpoche said do not harm animals because they mute they cannot defend themselves .
This supposed “best” ship proven to be the “best” prison for the animals to slowly waste away in. Such practice is sick and is a major reason why animals should not be exploited for their flesh. If the animals are kept healthily with enough water and food, such transport would be mildly justifiable as a means of transporting “product” but not even taking care of them properly is unacceptable.
Om Mane Peme Hum…
May those animals able to take a good rebirth and meet Dharma again in their next life…
May we able to keep on our practices and clean Guru Samaya to prevent us going down to the lower realms, hence may we able to lesser down the Negative Karma to be created…
Come to the end the animals still go through suffering .if no demand request, such activities no need to go through again.
For me I think that deaths caused by hydration and hunger is the worst. Not only that, 48,000 sheep will not be able to move properly due to the tight space no matter how big is the ship. And during the feeding time is the worst because the stronger ones will get more food and the weak ones will starve. If we stop eating meat then eventually more people will also become vegetarian and all the animals will be free once again.
This “Best” vessel had turned into worst hell on earth for the thousands of live stocks. Animals was virtually sinked into their own feces and urine while on their journey to be slaughtered. Fresh water was simply too expensive for seafaring vessel to be used for toilet flushing and sea water will corrode it’s metal haul! I will be very doubtful if animals were fed enough in order to cut down the amount of animals waste too!
