Patrik Baboumian – Germany’s Strongest Man 2011
Born in 1979, Patrik Baboumian is a psychology student. Born in Iran, he moved to Hattenhof, Germany together with his mother and grandmother when he was 7 years old. His heritage is Armenian-German and when he was young he gained an interest in weight lifting.
He began training in his teens, and when he turned 20, he had won his first International Federation of Body Building & Fitness (IFBB) German junior championship!
He started participating in more tournaments, competitions and championships and came in first place for many of them and a reigning champion for a few: 2007 German Champion (105 kg Strongman, GFSA), 2009 World Record Log Lift (165 kg), 2010 German Log Lift Record (180 kg or 397 pounds!). These are just to name a few.
He only weighs 105 kg and is 171cm tall, but all those years of hard work and training has led to Patrik Baboumian winning the title of Germany’s Strongest Man 2011 in August!
Want to know his secret???
He wrote the following on his own blog, Armenian-viking.com: “After being LW champion in 2007 and 2009 and HW vice-champion in 2010, I finally hold the German crown in strength sports in my hands. It was a very hard battle in the rain and I had to fight against my injured calf as well but at the end I was victorious! Now I have proven finally, that being vegetarian makes you a better athlete!”
So… whoever said that being a vegetarian makes you weak?? Hehe

Patrik Baboumian is amazing and deserves the titles that he earned as he is not all muscle and no brains. Being vegetarian will make you a better athlete but carbs will still slow you down. I assume he took lots of tofu as tofu has even more protein than some meat.
This is my favourite blog post to share with people who say that they need to eat meat for health reasons. There are so many athletes who are vegetarian and definitely are very healthy! But for vegetarians as well as non-vegetarians, it is important to know what we are eating – eg deep fried foods and too much processed food is obviously not healthy. Fresh salads, grilled vegetables etc are fine and there are many delicious recipes available for those who are interested in healthy and ethical eating..
Obviously, the saying that ‘Eat meat to grow muscles’ is a pure deception.
I must admire Patrik… I would say that it must be extremely difficult and very strict on his vegetarian diet to achieve this. Such determination must be recognized, and I’m truly glad that due to his believe and vegetarian lifestyle, more people now understand and more aware on vegetarianism… that compassionate dining is actually the proper way to a healthier body and mind
this guy earned the title and is a vegetarian!!! who ever said being a vegetarian is weak is now proven wrong.
This is living proof that being a vegetarian is a good and healthy lifestyle. It does not make you weak, unhealthy or make you fat. And as a plus, you are helping yourself become stronger and helping the world save animals because you do not eat meat anymore. I myself am a vegetarian, and i am good at many different sports. So please try your best to become vegetarian. Thank you for sharing.
A lot people says that if you eat less meat then you will be weaker. But the answer is being a vegetarian you will get more energetic and enthusiastic. Because eating meat you will get more cholesterol and is not good for your body and it makes you fat.
I think people should move away from their stereo types especially the chinese who think if eating meat will give us strengths. Dont believe the people , companies who are trying to sell you their products. Check first.
This article will be most helpful information for my interview with NTV7 tomorrow! I will definitely mention this and bring people to read about it here. Thank you Rinpoche.
Lose fat, gain muscle, have a clearer mind, adopt a vegetarian diet! It is also said to be the healthiest and most compassionate thing a practioner should do for himself and others, particularly the animals. Replace eating of animals flesh with proteins such as tofu products, and vegetables like tempeh, lentils, avocadoes, nuts, tropical fuits and scores of many others. If Patrik Baboumain can achieve the title of being Germany’s strongest man 2011, by avoiding eating of animals meat and being “on a plant-based Diet”, we too can be healthy and strong without animals meat, but as a vegetarian too! Egregious acts of animals cruelty, including abuse and neglect must be stopped. Practioners, especially those of Buddhist faith should join in, in-support of the withdrawalof those abusive and torturers industrial killing of animals. In the short time we have on this planet, please do have the compassion to care for these poor, helpless, suffering animals!
Majority of the people think in order to stay healthy and strong, we have to consume meat. I have known a friend, she was a vegetarian since she was young, she has never consumed any type of meat before. She is very healthy and rarely falls sick.
I have been a vegetarian (most of the time, hehe) since May this year, I did not become skinny, I did not become sick. Instead, my skin condition is better now.
Try to start the vegetarian maybe once a week, and slowly reduce the consumption of meat, you have to try to see the results.
Thank you Rinpoche for the post. Love his ending on the quote…
“Now I have proven finally, that being vegetarian makes you a better athlete!”
Patrik Baboumian deserved his titles not only with hard work, but also by his wonderful philosophy of life. Unfortunately, this setting in the sports world is not very commonly used …
