You couldn’t guess what this is!
If you just look at the pictures, you wouldn’t be able to guess what this is. I was not able to. I thought it something from a sci-fi movie. What you see in the picture above are covered in delicate silvery scales… sometimes with a shade of green or brown. They produce their own light and dwell at the very depths of the ocean… Depths of up to 600 feet (180 meters) to 4,500 feet (1,370 meters). What you see above is 1 of 45 individual species…
They have large tubular eyes pointing upwards. Everyday, they await for food (plankton or tiny fishes) to fall from above and catch them. They have a short life span of no longer than a year. So many undiscovered species live in the deeps of the ocean that never surface. Still thousands of undiscovered species of life form. Interesting. More people have gone into space than to the bottom of the ocean.
They are called the Hatchetfish. I don’t know about you… but they look familiar. Maybe like human faces in a distorted way?

Interesting….there is so many undiscovered species live in the deeps of the ocean that never surface. Still thousands of undiscovered species of life form. Scientist have been looking beyond what is beneath the ocean. To me looking at the picture I thought it was a alien but no it’s a deep sea creatures. First time coming across this creatures and the name of it. Its deep sea hatchetfish. Very weird and looks scary as named because of unique shape of the body that looks like a hatchet. This scary species can only be found in deep water and freshwater and in warm and temperate regions throughout the world. Their appearances help them thrive in extreme environments deep in the ocean. Researcher do believe that there are still more unknown creatures lurking below the ocean. Interesting there is life do exists which hidden beneath our planet’s ocean floors.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article which gave us some fascinating information about the hatchet-fish.
Dear Rinpoche, these undiscovered creatures are just to magnificent. Some of them evolve until they have transparent body and some have glowing body because in the deep ocean there is no light so they evolve to a state where they are able to generate light from their body.
These deep marine life are definitely very interesting. There are so many fascinating creatures in the world that we have not found. Personally, I do not think that these undiscovered creatures should be discovered by man. This is because when man kind discover something, they would usually do experiments on them, harming them in the end. Either that or they would catch theses creatures to consume them or even use as medications that do not have any use at all.
Same here Rinpoche, I wouldn’t have guessed what that was!
Mother Nature is amazing.. There are so many creatures around us that have yet to be discovered. Honestly the hatchet fish kind of scares me. They have such fierce looking eyes and teeth that can cut like a knife..
I don’t really think they look like humans as all. Hehe
I think like the species deep in the ocean, human natures are like that too.. We all have hidden abilities/traits that have yet to be discovered.. It’s within us, we just have to find it.. Just like how we all have Buddha nature within us, it’s just up to us to reveal it..
Thank you for sharing, Rinpoche!
They have very weird-looking faces. But I think that they are very beautiful because being able to shine in a deep, dark ocean is a very unique thing. I’ve seen them in a movie before, it’s called the Finding Memo.
I believe that there are more creatures like in the oceans awaiting to be explored.
Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
Love, beatrix.
Dear Rinpoche, these deep ocean creatures are so odd looking and it’s amazing that scientists said that they only discovered 3% of the world’s marine animals and the 3% of the world marine animals equals to 230,000 which is a lot. I hope that more peoples will discovered more weird creatures because I want to look at them.
most creatures that we know of that is underwater is just “the tip of the iceberg”. there are many wonders below the sea, these fishes are indeed on the these magnificent creatures list. it is too bad they only live for about a year.
fish
It is amazing to see such weird creatures and that possibly there are more undiscovered species under the deep blue world. Our planet was covered with 90% water so I am not surprise that there are things out there still which we have yet to discover.
This brings a reminder to us that our human life is truly precious as we are able to actually have the complete intact conditions to actually learn Dharma. If we think about it there are more creatures, insects, animals on earth compared to us humans, so where and how are they appearing? Buddhist believe in reincarnations so the thought of most of us going to the lower realms and one of them being an animal realm is definitely most possible.
So it is an apt reminder to me, us all that we truly do not know where we’re heading after we’re dead which can be pretty scary when we think about and most definitely our mind cannot just stop there. So definitely we should at least play it “smart” even if we don’t believe there is a Buddha or a God and do good deeds and have a kind heart.
There are countless number of sentient beings. Each species has its own uniqueness. I tend to wonder “WHO” is the creator for all these beings whereby each has its individual look and characteristics. The Hatchetfish looks scary like a distorted human face or some being from another planet. Rebirth as a fish is not any better than rebirths in the animal realm.
Wow didn’t know there were so many types of interesting creatures in the sea. This reminds me of the show Finding Nemo when there dropped down into the dark hole and they faced a fish that had a light bulb.I wonder can there be even larger and weirder fish under the sea that we don’t know of and we never seen before ?
It’s cool that they produce their own light. It’s also scary to know there is thousands of unknown species deep under water.
On first look, they look just like blobs of droppings everywhere. Going through the video, I think they look rather nasty; would not want to end up with one right in front of my nose.
The deep deep ocean is a mysterious world. There are still many parts of the deep world that have not been “conquered” by Man and slowly we are gaining insight into life down there.
这世界真的无奇不有,就像这深海里的微生物及动物,都是让人看了!目瞪口呆!它们生长在深海里,黑漆漆的,很自然的它们身上,就长有会发亮的东西,真的太神奇了!
We will become arrogant only when we are ignorance, ignorant about our surrounding and beyond. When we learn about how big and great is the world, the universe, then we will only learn to be humble, to push ourself to learn more.
The first impression and after reading the post, I still find the face of the Hatchetfish very similar to a human face that live in horror and suffer a lot… It would be terrible to live and die in that way.
Yes from the picture in the blog they do look like, “Human faces in a distorted way” with big bulging eyes and a big mouth. Who ever would guess its a Hatchetfish. The world we live in is a real mythical mystery – still filled with thousands of undiscovered species of live forms living below the depths of oceans. What more into the unknown open realms of mysterious space! A million thanks for the sharing Rinpoche.
Fabulous our oceans are like another planetary system or universe altogether. Thank you for sharing that there are so many biodiversity underneath in the oceans.
When I see this picture from Rinpoche’s blog main page, they look like some kinds of African arts piece. When I look at the picture closer by getting into this blog post , I could guess that these are fishes.
Oh yes, there are far more species in this world that we human dont know. So much to discover and we have much more to be amazed!!
This is an amazing video. It is interesting to know that there are so many different fishes and creatures in the deep blue sea. They look nice though but it is so sad to see that due to their karma they took rebirth in this situation; cold, dark, lonely, fighting for survival and never able to hear a word of dharma. We are very
fortunate to be born as human, to be near the dharma and we should not waste this golden opportunity to pursue our spiritual path.
I think I’ve seen some of it in ‘Finding Nemo’ though I’d like to see more of these creatures, and I find it funny that people are attracted to outer space and aliens rather than the ocean creatures. Is people more afraid of depth rather than height? They appeared to me distorted yet I think it’s interesting to study them more. Fabulous, thanks for sharing Rinpoche 🙂
It is very interesting to see all these fishes and creatures which are quite alien to us. Buddha had said there are countless of being in just a cup of water.
Another thought that came in to my mind is that, what will cause us to take rebirth into this kind of place where you can hardly see sunlight and whole life will be just hunting and eating… I think must be very lonely in the ocean and is there anyway and how long for these creatures to be able to practice and be liberated from samsara?
We are so lucky to be in a human form, and be close to Dharma. Don’t you think so?
Wow the Hatchefish looks like dry-fish with their mouth open.. It is kind of cool to know there so many different beings sharing our beautiful world.
Interesting to see all the weird animals that we have in this world especially deep in the ocean where no one can see. Would the karma of these animals be so bad that they are reborn in such a situation? I cannot imagine life in a deep dark place wondering around and never have the chance to meet with Dharma.
I was just talking to someone this week that if we think deeper, human beings do have resemblances of many of the animal behavior we observed. The world is really a ‘zoo’ and I find that it is a reflection of ourselves, good and bad habits and behavior from action. When we study animals on how they look, like what Rinpoche says here,”but they look familiar. Maybe like human faces in a distorted way?”
Dear May,
Animals and humans mate and procreate, they have to hunt for their food and we have to go to work to put food on the table and provide for the family. The only difference is that humans have higher intelligence to think higher and do something more with our lives to benefit others and animals simply don’t have the intelligence for this. The only thing is how many of us seize this opportunity to do more with it so we don’t create even more causes to take rebirth as animals.
Wow, very interesting marine animals. I believe that many more have yet to be discovered, not to mention earthbound ones. If human population is inceeasing, does that mean that more sentient beings have the opportunity to gain greater chance of being enlightenned? Hmmm…..
Thanks Rinpoche for this amazing deep sea animals videos.
