Try This to Repel Insects in Your House!
Dear friends,
It is very important to always keep the household clean and free of unwanted pests. When the area is clean, pests are less likely to enter as they do not have places to hide or food to eat. Furthermore, a clean and pest-free household is more likely to be a happy and healthy one.
Yet, despite our best efforts, there will be times when household pests become a problem. Worse still, amongst us there are people who are not fans of bugs and rodents, perhaps even phobic. And as Buddhists, part of our practice is to refrain from killing pests as much as possible and instead try alternative methods such as prevention or catching and releasing where possible.
This article shares some absolutely easy and harmless ways to keep these unwanted “friends” at bay and stop them from visiting. Do read it; I think you will find it helpful.

If You Have This Plant in Your House, You Will Never See Mice, Spiders, and Other Insects Again!
#1: Are You Tired Of Bugs?
Bugs are not cool. I mean it. Insects are the most numerous species on Earth. In fact, there are over 200 million insects living on our planet right now. Some have wings, antennas, ugly extremities. But, whether you like them or not, they’re necessary for maintaining the natural cycle of nature. They pollinize plants, and help organic matter decompose.
So how can we get rid of them without killing them?

#2: We Know Their Secret
Ha! Gotcha, you ugly bug!
Spiders and many other insects hate the smell of mint!

#3: Rodents
Mice… well, you may like mice, but certainly not when they’re a pest. And they don’t like mint either!

#4: Mint
So, you can get rid of them without actually harming them, isn’t that good news? Prepare a well-concentrated mint tea. Store it in a spray bottle then spray every corner of your house, particularly the door corners and the window rims. Insects just can’t stand the smell. So now you can naturally keep bugs and rodents away, and have a wonderful minty aroma at home. Isn’t that nice?

Plant-based repellent has been used for generation in traditional practice as a personal protection measure. Recently, commercial repellent products continuing plant-based ingredients have gained increasing popularity among consumers, as these commonly perceived as ‘safe’ in comparison to long-established synthetic repellents although this is sometimes a misconception. I am sure most people aware of the benefits of using natural insect which is also good for the environment. Pregnant women, infants, young children, and senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to the effects most of the chemical-laden repellent have and it’s particularly hard for the long run.
Synthetic repellents release several chemicals into the air, which could cause all kinds of health problems for the whole family. Here are just some of them:
– several repellents contain DEET, a chemical that can affect the central nervous system.
– chemical repellent can sting, causing more trouble for the people with sensitive skin
– The experiment has found chemical repellents to be strong enough to melt plastic.
– The chemical in insect spray can also pollute the environment.
Given the complication, don’t you think that there are benefits of using natural insect repellent.

H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche loves animals and is passionate against their harm, torture, and abuse.
The few minutes a day we spend on social media creating awareness for animals who cannot speak is purely spiritual and humanistic practice because we are trying to alleviate pain from another sentient beings and that makes us more spiritual, and that makes us more spiritual and more humane.
Glad to know there is method of getting rid of insects instead of killing it. I learned some important points from this article.A life is a life ,it should be valued.Mints is one good example where it can prevent bugs and rodents away.Having pepermint plant in our house and garden helps to keep mice, spiders, and other insects away. Thats wonderful idea without having to kill them.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article.
At the end of the day, a life is a life regardless of the shape and form. If we really think about it, as far as lives go, it is plain wrong and grossly inhumane to murder something just because it’s annoying, troublesome, discomforting or ugly but, yet it is not uncommon that many do it without a thought every single day when it comes to bugs. Admittedly but for Rinpoche’s teachings prompting deeper thoughts, definitely guilty of not addressing my mind to encompass bugs as part of the practice to refrain from killing. Ignorance is really scary and coupled with ego (due to self-inflated sense of importance) it can blind one to the blatant cruelty of our actions and negative consequences we are building up for ourselves, falsely comforted by our justification that we are superior to dominate and even cause the termination of the lives of those deemed as lesser beings to satisfy our needs and our comfort. In fact, it is even considered weird, “unnatural” and some say overkill for us to emphasis on their plights, that bugs are just trying to live their lives in the way they are genetically programmed to do so. It is rather unlikely that houseflies conspire to agitate us and spoil our day but rather they are looking for food for sustenance and mosquitoes don’t draw our blood on the basis it would taste delicious, they do it in order to survive. Ants don’t crawl into our home with plans to make our life difficult, they are doing it to stay alive. Yet, the tendency is to be angry at the “audacity” of such “pests” to “annoyingly appear before us” and “invade our space”. Thank you for this article which not only offered useful alternatives to deal with such bugs but also serves as reminder for me to reflect on the nature of my thoughts/views/assumptions and exercise of mindfulness as well as compassion.
Mint is very refreshing as tea and especially delicious as sweet green tea with mint leaves, and on top it even helps to keep insects out of our house…
This is great news – having mint ready in the kitchen for cooking or desserts AND keeping insects away.
I will get some mint plants tomorrow!
Thank you Rinpoche for always sharing Dharma with us. When we care about animals, we must also care about insects, eventhough we may not like them so much.

Will it work on human pests?? LOL.
Great ideas for yet another no-harm alternative to achieve the same aim, thank you Rinpoche.
It takes more effort, but care inevitably means going the extra mile.

Interesting and useful article to get ride of the pests naturally and importantly do not kill them. Pepper mint for example has so much usage, not only to prevent pests but give a good aroma in cooking too.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this useful and friendly piece of information.
It is in fact quite a simple and inexpensive way of keeping these uninvited guests to our houses at bay without harming or killing them.
While am not a huge fan of pest, I don’t want to kill them. These methods are better alternatives to deter them from coming into our personal space.
Didn’t know that peppermint is that useful as pest control. Thank you for these useful tips.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. It is a wonderful information! From now on, we can chase pests away from our home without killing them! It doesn’t only chase the pests away, but give the aroma at home. It’s double benefits. Before this, I never know that pepper mint can chase pests away. I thought pepper mint can only make food. I can start using this method at home to chase the pests away. And I can tell my mom to use this method in hometown too. Thank you Rinpoche. _/\_
Wonderful….can try this method to repel insects in our house using peppermint plants. I did not know much benefits of peppermint till i read this article. Its really good way to repel insects other then using the ingredient in our kitchen.Keeping the garden and surroundings clean to reduce opportunity for insects too.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this easy and harmless ways to keep insects away.
That’s really great! I love peppermint and have a few pots of them at home, and now I know what to do with them besides adding them to food.
Another thing I found out is that the so-called garbage enzyme really helps a lot. I make them at home in small batches and used the ready enzyme by adding them to the water I used to wipe tables or mop floor. I found that after using that daily in the mop water, the ants have stopped visiting my house and the mosquitoes are not vacationing in my house as much. But, it hasn’t helped with spiders.
So, this article on peppermint oil is great. Another very humane way to keep pests away from our house.
Thank you for this article and the information therein.
