The hens, who have reached the end of their egg-laying life, were due to be killed – a common practice in the US.
But after an approach from the Animal Place sanctuary in northern California, 3,000 of them will enjoy a comfortable retirement instead. Thanks to an unnamed benefactor, 1,150 of them will be flown to New York to be distributed to sanctuaries in the eastern US.
“It’s certainly the first time this many adult birds have been flown across the country,” said Marji Beach, education director at Animal Place.
Commercial airlines would not accept the 1,150-chicken load, which is why the group had to turn to a private jet company. Beach said the jet company did not seem shocked by the request.
Animal Place has saved 12,000 birds since it started in late 2010, the largest rescue operation it has saved 4,460 hens.
“If you met a chicken, they have unique personalities like dogs and cats and we think they deserve the same amount of compassion and respect that we give to dogs and cats – I promise we’re not crazy,” said Beach.
“They have not walked around, they’ve been in cages, they’ve never seen the sky before so it’s going to be quite an adjustment for them, hopefully they will adapt and be happy,” said Davies.

This is such rejoicing news for the 3,000 hens where change their destiny. It’s sad to know that the hen has been kept in confined space for their eggs and when they are old they will kill them. That is their life. The person who donated $50,000 has changed their lives and give the hen a great place for their remaining time. Such a big heart and generous person that does not see the hen as just an animal but a beings just like us deserve to live our life. May more people show their care, love, and respect to the animals to save their lives from cruelty and irresponsible act.
Wow …..rejoice to that an anonymous donor who had donated $50,000 just to save those chicken to be slaughtered. Thousands of Californian hens which supposed to be ready to the slaughtered house by chartered flight was safe and set free to a happy retirement on the east coast called the Animal Place sanctuary. That’s wonderful. Animal Place has saved many thousand birds since it commenced .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing to create the awareness to enable to safe as many as possible and less sufferings.
I thank the donors for being so generous to donate USD 50,000 to rescue the chickens from being killed. He/She is very compassion and his/her action is very inspiring. Chicken is just like any other living beings but human will treat them like an item to generate products and profit. And then when their existence are no longer valuable we will just kill them. May more people who read this article will avoid animal killing and stop eating meat.
This is so good how these chickens can escape death and get the life they were entitled to when they were born! It is very sad to say but there are many more chicken that are being slaughtered every day and in the most painful ways in the millions just to please out taste buds. See how selfish we humans are? Killing to make a short taste in our mouths? Horrible
Also the poor animals ( not just chickens ) barely see daylight before they die instead they are drugged to have more meat, crammed into a cage with at least 15 more and kept in the worst conditions and even the workers abuse the animals for fun sometimes. The key to relieving this is awareness. Spread how animals are being slaughtered and reduce the numbers until eventually they are at 0.
All animals deserve a proper life, all lives deserve proper lives. Humans are so cruel and they think they are the best of all but they need to remember that we are not alone on this world. Who know maybe one day UFOs or something may come around to visit earth and they may think wow what a cruel disgusting place. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.
Save animals, without our support many more animals will die. We all can create the karma for animals to be saved.

If those chicken could speak the account of their suffering would be too much for us to bear.But they could not. And they do not deserve to sufferjust because they could not speak. They ‘ want the same things as we do..no suffering: Be a vegetarian
Nothing much more happy than knowing more lives save from being killed. How can we enjoy our desire by letting others suffered. We just can’t accept it if it happen the other way round. It make sense. If we don’t want to be hurt same to the animals. The have feelings too, what worst is that they cannot tell and express so why we add on to their suffering.

Yea!!! This is really great news!!! I really must thank the anonymous donor for being so kind to spend the money on saving the old hens from death and liberating them somewhere in the east coast.

This is definitely something unusual…. Saving hens from being killed and flying them by private jet across the country to retire!! I am astounded by the effort Animal Place sanctuary has made and the kind donor who made this project possible. Such compassion they have! Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the article. This compassion act of people at the other side of the world teaches us that we too, if not the same can do more to help the unfortunate animals in our region.

Thank you for the sharing Rinpoche.I am glad to know that are those who still care for those defenseless creatures .Who had out served their productive years to help to supply to the food chain to us humans.It was a noble gesture to save those hens.
They really walk the talk when they charted a flight to make sure those hens arrived safely at their destination,cost was not at all an issue.
For those who committed to this rescue be blessed with outer and inner wealth as their determination showed sincerity,generosity and compassion at the highest level.
Wow! Thank you so much to the anonymous donor! I have definitely not heard of chickens being transported to another state by airplane. These hens deserve more than they were treated before that. Many people think chicken as another meat product but they never realised chickens are like other animals such as the dogs and the birds…. Now that they are in their comfortable place providing eggs for us humans, it’s definitely a relieve.

I’ve never heard of 1150 chickens being shipped to another state by a private jet before haha, the person who had sponsored for their transportation and retirement has such a huge heart spending that amount of money for the chicken/hens well being. For me, it is the first chance to know about such act of benevolence by humans shown towards aging hens. I could feel a sense of happiness inside me thinking that there are good people in the World and their good efforts will keep on prevailing over the bad deeds of other human beings.

It is frightening to comprehend facts and figures when one delves into the disparity of what is killed and consumed in our society without regard for life or environment blows my mind and breaks my heart.
In Australia where I happen to live 20 million (est for 2012) chickens are killed every week to satiate demand. Nearly a billion annually certainly food for thought…
May Animal Place works and compassionate hearts & minds grow even bigger!!

How kind… After so many years providing for humans, these hens do deserve a good and comfortable retirement. Nice to see that people are thinking of ways to repay kindness even if it’s to an animal. This may be something new, and some people may even find it ridiculous! But I think this is good conduct. Taking care of the animals (cows, hens, goats) after they are unable to produce for humans shows that they care, and are not here to exploit these animals or slaughter them when these animals are no longer useful to them.
Thanks Rinpoche for the sharing. I really feel happy that some people would spend so much money to save the chickens that are supposed to be killed. For this moment, what i can do to help is to become a vegetarian. Hopefully i can become a full vegetarian in the near future

As Founder of Peta, Ingrid Newkirk has once said, “When it comes to pain, love, joy, loneliness and fear, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy, each values his or her life and fights the knife”. Imagine you were the chickens. One day you were about to die, the next day you are allowed to live your life as a free bird until you die a natural death. I’ve heard of stories like that about horses and cattle etc that have been put in animal sanctuaries after they have been “retired”. We must support organisations that take care of old and sick animals that are no longer useful to their owners.
Not just dogs and cats, and not only chicken, in fact, all life beings has feeling, they need and they deserved love too from anyone else. We feel pain, sick, fear, hunger, uncomfortable or we feel love, comfort, joy, excitement, etc, etc.. Animals feel that too, human are not the exclusive one nor animal are not the special one, we are the same, we are exactly the same.
Although I’m not the animal person, but I do care and feel for them too, I’m very happy for these chicken to be released, they definitely deserved to have a happy and healthy life after all these years of hell type of living, they deserved to be free.

How wonderful that something like this is being done. Imagine these poor fowls whose meat many enjoy are tortured way beyond ordinary perception.
They are bred in most uncomfortable situations, to breed, then slaughtered for our insensitive appetite,
and when old killed prematurely.
I rejoice for the kindness of this benefactor.
What a lovely story for the weekend. It’s great that there are some people out there who believe that chickens deserve to live too. The majority of humans have been claiming dominion over animals for so long, believing that they can control those who are powerless to fight against them.
It is heartening to know that a minority care for animals and don’t just talk about it but walk the talk. Maybe the actions of a few may not make a huge difference, but for the chickens who were saved, it is HUGE 🙂
The anonymous donor will be blessed for this compassionate and altruistic action. We may say but we can’t afford to do what he or she did, by buying these chickens up to save them.. or that in our country, there isn’t a sanctuary like in the USA. It is true that we may not have the funds but what we can do – and easily too, with zero cost – is to stop eating meat because it’s all basic economics – demand and supply. When there is less demand, there will be less supply and these animals will suffer less.

It is said that chicken are the most abused of farm animals and the conditions that they are placed in, the worst. For the egg industry, hens are “sentenced” to an entire life of suffering without a single day of reprieve while male chicks are immediately put to death. And when we consider that chickens have the same cognitive capabilities of mammals (they understand and feel pain/discomfort) it is frightening to imagine what they are put through. In that way, the poultry and egg industry is a business of death and suffering.
And considering the world-wide demand for eggs and chicken meat, I would not be surprised if chickens are one of the most abused and slaughtered beings in the world. From the day chicks are hatched, they are immediately inflicted pain.
It is quite a refreshing change to read this post and I am quite grateful that there are people who would go out of their way to rescue these animals who must also rank one of the highest abused animals to be ignored.
This story is also a reminder of how quickly and suddenly things can change. One minute, you are on death row and the next, you’re being flown on a private jet to freedom. The reverse also applies and just as quickly and suddenly.
