We are starting to plant
The Organic Farm
One of the core pillars of conscious living at the Kechara Forest Retreat is to embrace and live in harmony with nature. We wish to achieve this more and more and as much as possible. Visitors and residents are invited to dive into the breathtaking abundance of our earth through green programmes held all year round, and to partake of the bounteous harvest from our organic farm and herb gardens.
We are attempting to plant some fresh vegetables and so far the results are promising. Today I was presented with our own homegrown lettuce and I must say it was delicious. I had three bowls of it and there were plenty more! Thank you! We are attempting to experiment, perfect as we go along and become better at planting a variety of vegetables. If we can grow more of our vegetables to consume, that would be wonderful. We can have natural pesticide free vegetables and help to defray growing food prices. It’s very rewarding to eat what we grow. Being vegetarian, most of my food comes from vegetables. I am looking forward to this very much as well as many others.

“Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful and most noble employment of man.” – George Washington
“Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field” – President Dwight D. Eisenhower
I’ve hardly ever met anyone in my corporate and social life in the modern concrete city that finds farming appealing, specially not among the younger generation. We find plenty of people who say they love nature and how amazingly beautiful nature is when they go on holidays. Who likes and enjoys the beautiful photos of nature, of harvest, of green on their computers, tablets and mobile phones. But to find people who truly embrace the beauty and appreciate what nature can provides is rare.
With living space growing vertical, most of the future generation in developed and developing countries may never get a chance to touch soil unless they visit a farm. I remembered when I first went to Australia, they had this farm event in the city and children and adults alike were amazed to see chickens and ducks. I grew up in a small town and almost everyone in the neighborhood have chickens, ducks or geese. I thought it was a bizarre sight at that time watching these people being so amazed seeing something as common as chicken. I traveled round the world since and it opened my eyes to a lot of things.
It would not surprise me if a lot of people actually do not know how vegetables are grown and what fruit trees look like. To be able to have the land and the opportunity to farm is a privilege. Those who still own landed property and have garden space should not missed out on gardening and even some home farming. In the future to come, home farming may just be the only sustainable way to feed the world.
At Kechara Forest Retreat, the green team members are privileged individuals tasked to take care of our beautiful landscape and farm for our community. This is an incredibly gigantic task. It requires a lot of discipline, commitment, care, hard work, dedication, patience, tenacity, humility, integrity and understanding to work with nature. The amount of hard work put in is seldom seen and lacks appreciation from those who enjoyed the results. Farming is painful work but noble and worthwhile for nature is compassionate and when it rewards, it doesn’t hold back.
May we inspire green living from Kechara Forest Retreat, gives novelty to farming and grow towards a conscious community.

I really love the fact that we are getting closer and closer to the concept of conscious community for example, we aim to self-sustain via various activities and for years, green team has been working tirelessly to achieve this. With the update above, I’m glad that it’s not impossible to reach our ultimate goal. The green team’s perseverance has brought them fruitful results. Please keep up the good work Likheng, Pastor Chia & Julia!
I remember when we first moved onto this land and the Green team started planting, it was difficult. It was monsoon season, and because the soil hasn’t been used for planting before, vegetation was hard to grow. However, through watching youtube, speaking with others, reading, visiting nurseries, learning, and LOTS OF CARE and love, the Green team, who had NO experience in planting at all, succeeded. I remember when I first ate their harvest of cucumbers – it was sweet, juicy and crunch! Pesticide free! It was really good. Then there were chillis, corn, kangkung to name a few. And this first harvest of lettuce, that was actually quite difficult to grow (But they succeeded to!), was amazing too!! It was sweet, fresh and super yummy! I was with a girl who doesn’t usually eat lettuces, but she loved this one! Glad to see the vegetation at KFR growing well.
KFR is really a lovely place to be… if you like animals, there’s the aviary. If you like to plant, we have the organic farm. If you like to learn Dharma, there are pastors to teach. If you like to meditate, we have a 2day 1 night inner peace retreat for busy city folks…. I love my weekends up at KFR, to get away from the city and enjoy the fresh dew of nature.
Amazing spaces and gardens treated with so much care
You are all doing an amazing work all together with Rinpoche. Everything is treated with high caring. The plants are very happy!
Rinpoche has always wanted to create a holistic place where we can grow and make our own foods and at the same time feed ourselves spiritually as we engage in spiritual practices which will heal our minds and soul. A great big thumbs up for the Green team who are working hard not only to green up KFR but at the same time making these pesticide-free produce available 🙂
The natural soil condition is interesting, becoming clayish after rain. The Green Team of KFR are working hard on improving the soil, experimenting with planting varieties of vegetable and fruit trees. Their efforts are showing results as written here by Rinpoche.
