This Couple Spent Decades Building Their Own Self-Sustaining Island
Talk about extreme green.
Artists Wayne Adams and Catherine King spend their days completely immersed in nature – the Canadian couple lives off-the-grid on a floating sustainable island appropriately named Freedom Cove.
King and Adams say that the Cove, cast on Cypress Bay in Tofino, British Columbia, has allowed them to interact with nature without interfering in it.
Their eco-paradise features greenhouses, an art gallery and a lighthouse tower – all of which are fashioned from recycled materials and painted bright shades of pinks and purples. The couple grows their own food on the expansive gardens that weave through the property and harnesses energy from an array of solar panels.
“We live our life in a manner that, we hope, adds to the health of the environment,” explains King. “We do our best to live conscientiously this way every day.”
Freedom Cove is an escape more than 20 years in the making, and it’s not finished yet. Wayne and Catherine continue to brainstorm new pieces to add to their already spectacular puzzle.
Check out their photo archive to see how the island became the place it is today. Warning: prepare for a jaw-drop.

Truly amazing couple, enjoying they lifestyle creatively and innovatively with nature. It’s not easy to adopt living off grid in an island as they may face a lot of challenges furthermore living completely self-sustained. So nice to see the green that they harvested around their house.
Men and women have left the noise and stress of a modern urban existence to seek the romanticized peace and beauty of raw nature, sometimes with a tragic result. This is a real escape from the busy city life. Thank you for sharing this Rinpoche.
This couple is very creative and unique to live in a fairy tale liked place. Reminds me a bit of Smurf land. A wonderful and peaceful place of their own. Very sweet!:)
The idea to be interacting with nature without interfering it is very noble. This floating home allows King and Adams to plant their own food and harness solar energy. The conscious effort to add health to the environment is the driving force behind their creatively spectacular home on Cypress Bay. Well done, King & Adams. Thank you for sharing this article.
Amazing people living an amazing dream. If we truly want to leave less of a carbon foot print we can do it, if we are determined. We can truly help the planet if we are extremely determined
Freedom Cove is truly amazing. King and Adam are so creative to come up with this eco friendly idea to live in harmony with nature. It is such a happy place. Love the pink and purple colour and all the plants surrounding the whole floating island. This is a healthy way to live; away from the hustle and bustle of living in the city.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this interesting post.
It’s their economic and creative use of space in this little floating island that is enthralling! Everywhere you turn there are plants and flowers in quaint containers! Wayne and Catherine are literally surrounded and immersed in the nature they love so much.Beautiful! Not to be surrounded by the artifacts of materialistic living.Going back to nature. Living and breathing greenness and fresh air all the time. This is how they have made their dream a reality.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing and for reminding us that living without the clutter of possessions and as naturally as possible (which is rare nowadays)is the best.
Just simply amazing and truly creative. This couple shows the world that if you really want to live in harmony with nature, you really can. Far too many of us who have been living in city sometimes lose touch, forget or disconnect with nature because we’re being served with “convenience” and hence live in a materialistic lifestyle where we tend to become more and more unconscious of nature. Because of this, many of the choices we make today that creates the demand for killing animals as well as our mother earth.
Wayne and Catherine has definitely taken the road less travelled and created a real escape away from the materialistic world. Love how they plant their food all around their floating house and live off it and at the same time.
KFR may not be as eco friendly as this but it is a start in introducing to many people on how we can live conscientiously in harmony with not just nature but with our body, mind and spirit. Thank you Rinpoche for creating KFR and giving Malaysians a chance to experience nature living again.
Looking at the few pictures above, what King and Adams have built is a true paradise for people who love being close to nature.
All of us living in the city and working 9 to 5 jobs should be jealous and envy this couple who are doing somethings that’s out of the ordinary, something special and most importantly, something that they love doing and something that doesn’t hurt the planet we live on.
I am quite surprised that over the years, there little island had managed to grow so much despite the fact that only 2 people will involved in building the whole place up.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this interesting post!
For some, they instantaneously find themselves in tune with nature and will take every possible means to protect them. In some cases, they are willing live harmoniously with nature. Reminds me of those monks and nuns who can live simply and easily contented. Hopefully more and more will appreciate this type of living condition.
This is wonderful! I like how they live in tune with nature and respect lives, contributing to the growth and sustainability of our natural resources. The more people choose to live green, the more benefits we will bring to the world and many of our future generations to come. Thank you Wayne Adams and Catherine King for all that you have done, and to His Eminence Tsem Tulku Rinpoche 25th for sharing such wonderful deeds!
