I love Wat Po and have visited numerous times. I use to come here in the quiet of the day to do my prayers/sadhanas years ago. Now it’s streaming with tourists non-stop. Very popular place for people to visit and make wishes at this sacred temple. I have taken a group with me this time and thougth to share our visit with all of you.
Please take a look at the video which has the monks chanting inside Wat Po and we were present…very lucky…very sanctified place.

P.S Remember, in the Thai language Wat means temple or Monastery.

One of the largest reclining Buddhas in the world

This is the cathedral inside Wat Po and we were lucky as we walked in, the monks were at prayer we joined in for a short while to absorb the blessings.

I love this Buddha image…

Our group from Kechara

The river right outside not far from Wat Po….you can see an ancient Monastery across the river with a stone stupa ..this place is called Wat Arun.

Thailand is a Southeast Asian country known for tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha. Home to an exorbitantly priced delicacy as well. There are thousands of Buddhist temples in Thailand. Everywhere and corners we could see Buddhist temples . Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, it’s a must-see for any one visiting Thailand first-time . It is the one of the most important Buddhist temples in Thailand, which is 1,800 years old, and is the oldest in the world. Been the third largest, longest and most beautiful reclining Buddha image in Thailand . There are 108 pearl carvings of auspicious images on the Buddha’s soles, in the Chinese-Thai style. Visited Bangkok many years ago but couldn’t recall if I had visited this temple. Wish to revisit again in future to see again the beauty of those temples at Bangkok. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post with video and beautiful pictures.
Thailand is a land of Buddhism and having many beautiful and unique temples every corner of the country for locals as well as tourist. Wat Po, is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand. Wat Po is one of the oldest and largest temples in Bangkok features the famous Reclining Buddha, which is also the largest in Thailand. Its such a beautiful temple that has attracted thousands of tourist yearly. The Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho) is a must-see for all visitors to the Thai capital and it seem to have the largest collection of Buddha images in Thailand. I have been there many years ago but could not have remember much of it. Watching the video ,i would definitely make another visit again to Bangkok to see the beautiful statues, murals and the unique structure of the temple. Watching the Wat Arun reminds me of it ….these Wat Arun I could remembered during my trip there.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the video and the beautiful pictures of the Wat Po.

Thanks for sharing. Could you tell me at what time monks sing? I guess 5am and 5 pm?
Tsem Rinpoche, I love your blogs. you explain everthing so well, not above people to the people. I never in my life would have thought I would see so many wonderful sights, and truly stunning workmanship on the buddhas. thank for bringing more Buddhism into my small piece of the world in Canada. It is truly awe inspiring and you are a great teacher for Westeners. thank you again for your many films..Namaste.
Thailand has always been one of my favourite travel desitnation… it used to be for the good food and shopping for the “budget” traveller. But now with Dharma, I love it even more as I see so many temples and stupas that protrudes out every where you turn and bless the country and its people. This is definitely a must visit temple!
I think many year ago I have been to Wat Pho and Wat Arun with Justin as advised by Rinpoche and I am always in awe with how well they make their offerings, how beautiful they adorn their temples, the decor and the rischness fitting for a King a of Dharma and the how clean their temples are kept… it exudes such serenity and peace! It makes you want to sit down and do your meditations and sadhana. Now when I go to Thailand, if I do not visit the temples or make Dana offering…http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/students-friends/bangkok-monks-and-why-make-offerings.html I would feel that it is an empty wasted trip.
Wat Po is one of the place you must visit when you are in Bangkok.
You can arrange 1 day program for this, you can start your day by do dana (food offering) to monks at Kraisri road (next to Kao sarn road) in the early morning then proceed to Wat Prakeaw (Grand palace) which is about 5-10 minutes by taxi from Kaosarn road and after that you can go to visit Wat Po as it is just located behind Wat Prakeaw and you should go to try Thai traditional massage, most of masseur are learn how to massage from here, their really do a good massage.
Thankyou Rinpoche for a great video and explanation. I visited Wat Po maybe few years ago but it was a tourist thing. Take pictures, pose here post there, like “wow, so nice” and that’s that. On this trip with Rinpoche, not only we learned a lot of the significance of the temple as well as the Thai culture. How Thais are so devoted to Buddhism. The king has set a great example of a true Buddhist practitioner, he educates the country with true compassion and dharma. I respect the Thai King a lot.
Thanks again for the lovely video 🙂
I visited Wat Pho 5 years ago with friends, but that was nothing compared to going on this trip with Rinpoche. Everything held much more meaning and significance when we had Rinpoche’s commentary guiding us though the entire temple complex. And the Reclining Buddha is magnificent, even more so that now I know more about Buddha’s history. A must visit place for all!
You must visit Wat Pho temple in Thailand. The large reclining Buddha is very grand and beautiful.
Thank you Rinpoche for this wonderful blog.
Whenever I am in Bangkok, I will always visit temples and make donations because they have so many beautiful Wat. Spectacular! Now when I circumambulate I get to chant the mantras that I have learnt. How wonderful!
Thank you Rinpoche for the great and concise explanation of this temple!
These powerful ladies are just powerful but they are all very generous and also full of compassion. May the birth of Kechara Tea House helps to educate the people in China to be more compassionate towards animals and I really hope it will help to reach out to all the people in China and be less greedy for money and unethical deeds. Hope the we all be inspired by these powerful ladies and most important our Guru..
Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing yet again your visit to holy places in Thailand. Wat Po is so magnificently resplendent. The Kings who built and created this amazing House of Lord Buddha put all their reverence into the creation of this amazingly splendid and awesome cathedral, its stunning golden image of Lord Buddha and reclining image of Him.Then again the imposing stupas , the many beautiful images of Lord Buddha , the many chapels and grottos, the great murals on the wall testify to the awesome sacredness of this imperial Temple! The serenity of the whole scene has been echoed in the lovely harmonious chanting of the monks.
Thank you for the gift of a most powerful spiritual experience gained through listening to you and viewing the pictures and the video.
I was very fortunate to be able to visit 3 temples on my previous trip to Bangkok and Wat Po is my favorite. I was also very lucky because when i walked into the hall, the monks were chanting. I love the reclining Buddha image so much, the serenity in the hall and the details. I still remember being fascinated with the mother of pearl inlaid on Buddha’s feet and near there to be able to put coins in a row of small bowls. At that time, i had no idea what the tradition meant but i listened to the tour guide who told me it was an offering to bless everyone. Within the compound was the Medicine Buddha image and it was from this temple that the art of healing including using traditional methods of massage first started. Now the school is off the temple grounds and you can go and enjoy a good traditional Thai massage. Thank you very much Rinpoche for sharing this.
Very Golden and Splendour Building. There is not better place than a temple fill with Buddhas Energy.May all Beings Attain Nirvana.
I most humbly thank your soul, what splendour that gives such serenity
One can just feel the presence, power and vibration of the monks’ chanting. How resonating and beautiful. Thanks for sharing the video, Rinpoche.
Dear friends, take a look at this video on this post. I love the holy monks chanting. It does not concern me what tradition the monks come from. Monk is a monk and they are to be respected. There were so many senior monks chanting when we visited this sacred temple. I was filled with reverence and faith in the sangha. Yes I am sangha, but I am on and they are many and to show respect, I collect merit to further my practice. TR
