A Cancer Survivor of 23 Years
At the end of November 1996, His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche visited Penang, Malaysia. During this trip, Patsy Gooi, now the manager of Kechara Paradise Penang and one of Rinpoche’s long time students, introduced her godmother, Margaret Chin, to Rinpoche.
Margaret is a 3rd stage breast cancer survivor, although outwardly you would never have guessed. Her radiant and dynamic personality does not indicate this at all. At 71 years old today, she leads a full and busy life in Penang, focusing on helping others and she attributes it all to Rinpoche.
Margaret’s first impression of Rinpoche in 1996 was that he was very friendly and warm. At the time, due to a mastectomy Margaret had undergone where she had also had her lymph nodes removed, her left arm had become infected. As a result, she had to go regularly to hospital for drips. When Rinpoche learned about her health issues, he conferred Vajrapani initiation to her and also advised that she sponsor quarterly pujas at Gaden Monastery.
Soon after she received the initiation, her left arm recovered and, as Margaret says, so far so good. Since then, even though Margaret has barely seen Rinpoche – the last time in 2002 (12 years ago) – she has firmly kept up her daily prayer commitments, her annual sponsorship of a monk at Gaden and the quarterly pujas.
“Life is like a drama. After meeting Rinpoche, it changed to a new drama. Life is very smooth. My arm infection cleared.”
Rinpoche had nicknamed her Cleopatra then – certainly this lady’s powerful energy is formidable.
“After I met Rinpoche, my lifestyle changed – I learned to forgive people. In fact, anyone who needs help, I will go…”
A regular volunteer and committee member of the Penang Cheshire Home for the past 14 years, she is in charge of rehab for the physically disabled. She is also involved with the Caring Angels for the past 11 years, raising funds for them. And that’s not all – Margaret has also been an active member of a cancer patient support group, the Among Friends Wellness Support Group, over the past 10 years. Here, she and other cancer survivors share their own experiences with cancer patients to give them much needed support.
Now, she says that her health is okay and her life is very smooth. She has survived for 23 years and is able to do what normal people are doing. Actually, we beg to differ. Margaret is doing much more than what the average person is doing – despite her health issues, she is dedicating much of her life to help others, and that I believe is the source of her joie de vivre and the sparkle in her eyes.

What a great sharing of Margaret Chin’s devotion towards H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche in diligently following his advices even when he is away from her. Her strength and courage is amazing as she selflessly helps others instead of focusing on herself and her problems. The advises of her Guru and the merits gained had helped her greatly. Very inspiring and definitely a good example for us to emulate. May she always be blessed!
Very cool article, sometimes a disaster can turn out to be a blessing. Incredible- if it wasn’t for guru’s compassion and wisdom the student may not have turned her mind around. And if it wasn’t for student’s guru devotion the guru’s teachings and advise would have had no meaning. Nice story.
Thanks for the kindness Rinpoche to Madam Margeret. Life is like a drama, always up and down, sometimes unexpected things happen, we must really stay strong and be positive, only when we think good things will happen then it just will happen..I really appreciate Madam Margeret for her kindness to help others and her story really inspired me. Wish you all the best, Madam Margeret
Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing on your devoted student Madam Margaret Chin. Her sincere act of Guru Devotion should be a good example to everyone to follow.Thru her relentless faith in the guru advice she was able to overcome a big obstacle and was able to benefit numerous people through her selfless act of giving which is the highest form of Dharma in action.
We certainly hope Madam Margaret Chin would be free from obstacle to continue her good work to spread the Dharma.
Thanks for Rinpoche’s sharing. Another true story of Guru devotion and 100% trust on Guru . Magaret still continue sponsor the puja and monk even if she already recovered. It was meaningful to spend her life in helping others . I like what she say : we learn to forgive!
Another great article whereby if we follow diligently what our Guru advice us to do, everything will be smooth for us.
Great life changer and turn around for Margaret Chin.
I have met Margaret once few years back, she is a very friendly and kind lady. Margaret is one of the real example of following guru’s advice and do it with consistant, a lot of our suffering will be eliminated or reduced when we take our guru’s advice to heart.
There is no magic in this world, it’s not about getting a high lama’s blessing and we can cure every sickness or overcome any obstacle we have in a glimpse of eye, it is about how much effort we put into practicing Dharma, we created the problems, hence, we have to settle it ourselves, and not dump it to other people. Margaret is one great example here, for 23 years, she is consistently doing what Rinpoche advised her to do, she has practiced it for 23 years, this is the quality we need to learn from.
Margaret Chin, in accordance with the blog, was a 3rd stage breast cancer survivor. She attributed her survivorship all to Rinpoche, who upon learning of her health condition conferred Vajrapani initiation upon her, with instruction to sponsor quarterly pujas at Gaden Monastry, firmly keep up her daily prayer commitments, and her annual sponsorship of a monk at Gaden, all of which were devotedly been complied with. Thereafter, as delightfully revealed by her, “Life is like a drama, which after meeting Rinpoche it changed to a new drama; to a smoother life, when her infection was cleared. Even her lifestyle changed to a more forgiving Margaret, who is willing to help and benefit people whenever the needs arised.” Today, Margaret is said to be doing much more than what an average person would do, dedicating her life in helping and benefiting all sentient beings. Admittedly, she said that’s her way of life now, thanks to Rinpoche. Congrats to you Margaret!
Thank You admin and Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful testimonial of Madam margaret Chin, it shows that if we follow Guru advice we can over any problem, even health related issue that is plaguing us. Most importantly is Madam Margaret is so blessed to received initiation from Rinpoche, and she kept the practice diligently which has helps her very much.
