Deceiving Our Guru
(By Tsem Rinpoche)
When we deceive our guru, we will separate from our guru, or we will see our guru’s actions as wrong, or we will illicit wrathful actions from our guru, or we will cause our guru to have short life.
The worst omen, is not trees falling on our houses, or accidents happening on our way to see our guru, or our pendants falling, or fire, or bad dreams. The worst omen a student can have, is when OUR GURU NEEDS TO REPEAT HIS INSTRUCTIONS TO US.

Never try to deceive our Guru, our Guru has taught all those wonderful teachings to us, show us the way and our Guru is right inside our heart. Our Guru is one that guide us out of darkness into the land of eternal light. Our Guru has touched the lives of many of us. We can all better ourselves by learning, practicing Dharma as taught by our Guru.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this.
Revisit this profound teachings again just to remind myself again and again . One thing we have to walk, and create the way ourselves. Most important is learning, practicing Dharma and transforming our mind. Never deceive our Guru, Never blame our Guru nor matter what we have ourselves to blame when things are not right as it seen. Have seen people who left Dharma, just because they are not happy . Its not right after all what our Guru had taught and gave us all those teachings are indeed precious to transform our mind.
Thank you Rinpoche for these teachings with folded hands.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for this profound , precious teachings.
Never deceive our Guru, have trust an faith always in our Guru to be blessed and protected. Practicing the Dharma and transforming ourselves to be a better person.
Thanks for sharing the video…a good watch to understand better.
Rinpocheela, your holiness has have cared for all of us, in the course of different section of manner . One who showed light for further coming life is our gurus who is varied till our breathe off if we deceive them in such manner we will never going to be a real living being
Thank you Rinpoche for the teaching, This indeed is so true and valid, I’ve seen people who been with Rinpoche for years but leaving Dharma in the end. Is it because Dharma not good? Is it because of Rinpoche? The answer is not, it’s the problem with them, because when they were in Dharma, they didn’t practice it well, being in Dharma doesn’t mean anything, being with a guru doesn’t mean anything if our action are contradictory with what our guru teach us, then we will create a cause to be further and further away from our guru and Dharma.
When we go further away, our mind will be obviously degenerated, like it’s been held on for sometime, and when the string that holding it suddenly been cut, it drops in an instant to the very bottom, imagine the impact? I’ve seen people who left Dharma, their mind has changed totally opposite from the Buddha’s teaching. So we must never deceive our guru and create the cause for more suffering to come in our later stage.

Dear Rinpoche thank you for sharing this profound teaching with us we should keep that in mind and transform otherwise it defeat the purpose of our guru to teach us endlessly.
I think most people lose sight of what a guru is for. When a guru tells you the truth that hurts your ego, tells you off for something you did wrong, trying to help you transform for the better, because its not something they want to hear they run away. In the end it is their selfish minds of having the preception of what the guru they want, that it defeats the purpose of having a guru. Blaming the guru for something that you do not want to hear has no benefit but only strengthens the selfish mind. I really agree when someone apologises and continuously apologises, it only hides the negative actions and only practices deception.
Refuge accordingly, not only mean acceptance of the three jewels, but with complete faith, putting our Guru’s teachings into practice with strong daily efforts. As a result when things go wrong, there should be more acceptance of our predicament, move on rather than moaning and blaming others and looking for release or reliefs within worldy activities. Taking refuge does not automatically transform us into spirituality. We still have to make great efforts to overcome our ignorance and bad habitual actions. We must learn to become aware, mindful and take responsibilty for our actions, but that does not mean that we should abandone all required responsibilties to our family commitments. Such irresponsible behaviours will only lead to more sufferings for those who are unable to live an entire life of chasity. Anyway, we pray that with deep faith in the three jewels, they will help us in our practice to free ourselves from all these predicaments. Om Mani Padme Hum.
Our Guru embrace us with his care, love and kindness,no matter how many mistakes we make.We must remain loyal to our Guru through death and eternity. While ordinary love is selfish, the Guru’s love is divine without condition, boundary or change.Never deceive our Guru, instead trust our Guru,we are blessed with a tranquil heart
This is another profound teaching. Direct and ‘brutal’ yet truthful, thought provoking and honest. Thank you, Rinpoche.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for this profound teaching on the importance of practicing the Dharma and transforming ourselves, and on how we should not deceive our teacher and incur the worse omen of having our Guru repeat his instructions to us.
The Buddhadharma contains the 84000 teachings of Lord Buddha that are designed to ‘cure’ the 84000 mental afflictions of beings, the root of which is Ignorance. Buddha showed us, by the way He lived His life, how to apply the Dharma(His teachings) to transform and heal ourselves.
We should all meditate on the fact that we must have collected such tremendous merits and created such great causes for us to be able to meet a Guru, who gives us the teachings(Dharma)directly. The Guru has spent years in single-minded focus on deep practice , after receiving the precious teachings from his Gurus. The teachings have come, through our Guru, from an unbroken lineage all the way from Buddha Shakyamuni. When we do not follow our Guru’s instructions, we show great disrespect to him and towards the invaluable teachings he is imparting.
We should never deceive our Guru. The highest form of deception is Inner Deception, when we do not practice the Dharma that we have been taught, and we do not transform. We are also deceiving our Guru when we do not carry out his instructions, and keep apologizing for it. The worst omen is when our Guru needs to repeat his instructions to us.
When we deceive our Guru, we will separate from our Guru, or we will see our Guru’s actions as wrong, or we will elicit wrathful actions from our Guru , or cause him to have a short life.
Something I believed that is our Guru always have a kind heart and ton of compassion like ocean to help his students and all sentient beings. Until today, I still can remember in one of the gathering with a small group of students, Rinpoche mentioned that Rinpoche wish can bless one billion of sentient beings in the world. From the teaching, I can see how compassion Rinpoche are!!!I really inspired by Rinpoche’s selfless good quality.
The highest service and offering to our teacher is transforming our mind, which doesn’t actually serve the teacher but serve ourselves. Hence, the highest offering to our teacher is NOT serving the teacher but ourselves with the transformation of our minds. The teacher wants us to transform; to rid us of sufferings and want only happiness, temporal and ultimate for ourselves. So the teachers has only compassion and wisdom. Teachers like that are nothing but Buddhas.
With Folded Hands. I will continue to transform. No excuse, no apologies.
KH, you have said what I wanted to say. The greatest service and offering is indeed to put his teachings into our daily actions, until all positive actions becomes habitual. Other than working on our own transformation, we should also share with others the benefits of our Guru’s teachings, so that they too may benefit & start their own mind transformation.
Rinpoche’s always makes the teachings easy to understand but I still need to listen to them every now and then. It helps to reinforce his teachings into my mind or to gain deeper understanding which I’ve missed earlier.
May I always be mindful of all my actions and thank you Rinpoche to continually turn the wheel of dharma.
When we serve others it seems that other benefits more. In actual fact the one who receive the most is the doer because the action is one time while the mind training is limitless. When the mind has become familiar with serving others it also look to benefit ourselves correctly. It may think if I don’t know how to walk the path how do teach it to others? One who has developed the habit to serve others will therefore think I shall walk the path myself to gain the results so that I may be of benefit myself and teach it to others.
谢谢上師的开示,上師很真实的点出了我们由无明造成的种种邪见,让我们看清自己内心因为自私所不願意做出改变,令我很汗颜,往往我也很难放下。。。
Devotion to the Guru is usually misinterpreted as giving away the freedom which we have imputed in our minds. We are so used to the “freedom” coined inside our minds that most of the time we find it hard to let go. Our projections well us up in a condition and situation sometimes hard to phathom.
There’s always a way out when we open ourselves up to the teacher and for him to look into our minds, replenishing it with virtues we lack and fixing the ones gone bad. The key connection here is to be able to be frank and hold integrity in the relationship for it to grow and mature to what it was intended for – Enlightenment!
Hence, deceive not your Guru with things which you cannot deliver but make the promise of delivery. It will only hamper our spiritual growth if we do so
i got a mate called the kalu rinpoche was sexually abused in the monestry is this true ?
Everything Rinpoche said is totally true! We received the dharma teachings from our Guru but we don’t absorb the teachings. We called ourselves dharma practitioners yet we do not apply the teachings into our lives yet we expect results. Beside deceiving our Guru, we are also deceiving ourselves. Even through many years of listening to the dharma yet there’s no mind transformation as the very fact is that we are lazy and refuse to push ourselves out from our comfort zones yet we expect miracles to happen.
Very few knows that the Guru is NOT what we think he must be, or what we read in books about guru.
Completely agree because it is utterly true! This is a wonderful teaching that is so real and honest!
Rinpoche has always cares for his students in all aspect of their lives but the biggest and most important one is our mind transformation. That is the real reason why we seek a Guru and the real reason why the teacher exist to teach. If we do not want mind transformation, then why bother to take refuge and follow a teacher for? A teacher is not around to stroke our egos further, but to break it.
Most practitioners are like Sunday Buddhist, something like Sunday Church goers, we’re only good on Sundays but the rest of the week… we are back to our monster self. What’s the point? That would be the biggest self-deception to oneself and to ones teacher!
