Into the Light
Into The Light, the latest publication from Kechara Comics is an epic tale spanning four generations of Chinese immigrants in Malaysia. The country, then known as Malaya, was a prosperous British colony at the turn of the 20th Century. It was rich in tin and rubber, two of the most precious commodities at the time. And so it should come as no surprise that British Malaya was the destination of choice for Chinese, Indian and Javanese immigrants fleeing from poverty, famine and political oppression in their home countries. Between the end of the 19th Century and the early 20th Century, over 1.5 million Chinese immigrants alone landed in Malaya.
Set in George Town, Penang, this tale traces the rags to riches story of the Tan family, starting from the time Tan Ong, his wife Mei, and their son Ah Chin set foot on Malayan soil. Tan Ong is an honest-to-goodness hardworking man who is both humble and kind. Always generous to lend a helping hand, Tan Ong is quick to gain the admiration of his co-workers and the trust of his employer, Mr Ho. Swiftly rising through the ranks, Tan Ong is soon joined by his son Ah Chin in working for the Ho Trading Company.
The death of Tan Ong during World War II is followed by a boon when Mr Ho rewards Ah Chin and his late father’s loyal service — by helping him to realise Tan Ong’s dream of opening a traditional Chinese medicine dispensary.
Uniquely, Tan Ah Chin & Son Medicine Hall only sells products that are plant-based, containing no animal products. This is due to the Tan family’s devotion to the Goddess of Mercy, Guan Yin.
From Tan Ah Chin to his son Tan Hock Seng and on to the fourth generation, the Tan family have not only built up a successful business for themselves but also their reputation as one of the pillars of the local community.
Into The Light’s main story begins when Tan Hock Seng, who is in the sunset years of his life, relinquishes the reins of the family business to his children Johnson and Rose. Under the two millennials, Tan Ah Chin & Son Medicine Hall has moved into larger premises, and their grandparents’ traditional herbal remedies have been rebranded. They have even launched their own range of organic health products.
All seems to be going well until a series of spooky events triggers a downward spiral. Out of the blue, customers find that their newly bottled products are rotten. They even begin falling ill from consuming the herbal remedies instead of healing.
When a tragedy strikes the family, gossip begins to spread of Tan Ah Chin & Son Medicine Hall being haunted. However, it is only after Rose has a first-hand encounter that she begins to open up to the fact that the world we live in contains more than we can perceive.
At the brink of collapse, help comes to the Tan family in the form of Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden is a fully enlightened Buddha who manifested over three hundred and fifty years ago in Tibet. Taking the form of a protector deity, Dorje Shugden has never failed to answer the prayers of those who seek assistance, and his swiftness for dispensing aid is the stuff of legend. The tales of the miracles performed by this all-powerful guardian deity to help the Dalai Lama escape from Tibet in 1959 is still the subject of passionate discussions today.
As an enlightened being, Dorje Shugden’s nature is that of wisdom, and his actions are motivated by compassion to relieve the sufferings of others. The extraordinary accounts of Dorje Shugden’s feats in bringing people help when they need it, even with insurmountable obstacles, have gained him renown as a “Wish Fulfiller”.
Among his many abilities, Dorje Shugden is well known for his efficacy in dispelling paranormal disturbances, pacifying tormented souls and subjugating otherworldly beings. How does he employ his great compassion to help? The answer is found in Into The Light. Read the full comic book below or download the PDF to read at your leisure.
