Lightning-Fast Yumar Gyalchen

One of the most interesting, if lesser known, protectors of Dorje Shugden’s entourage is the Dharma Protector Yumar Gyalchen. While this name may not be familiar to most Dorje Shugden practitioners, they will however be very familiar with his wrathful form, Kache Marpo. Kache Marpo is the attendant and main minister to the Wisdom Buddha Dorje Shugden. In this capacity, he serves Dorje Shugden in the most devoted manner of an enlightened Dharma protector with full humility and great compassion.
From the main form of Kache Marpo manifests six further emanations who enact all of Kache Marpo’s orders. These are not separate beings but emanations who share the same mindstream as Kache Marpo himself. They hold different implements and ride on different mythical and powerful animals. Each emanation bears a different facial expression which represents a different enlightened aspect of Kache Marpo. Yumar Gyalchen is one of these six emanations and is considered by high lamas such as His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche to be no different from Kache Marpo in nature.
From the side of sentient beings however, we perceive Yumar Gyalchen as being a little different from Kache Marpo. Yumar Gyalchen manifests in a peaceful demeanour, exuding great compassion and calmness in his iconography and when he enters an oracle in trance. Kache Marpo, on the other hand, is described as a young and powerful protector who has the force and great wrath to overcome obstacles. When Kache Marpo manifests during trance, he appears in an extremely wrathful and outspoken form. The level of his wrath is proportionate to the congregation before him; in barbaric places where Dharma practice is not strong, Kache Marpo will manifest in a form so wrathful, many of the monks and laity are known to be scared and run.
So the special emanation of Yumar Gyalchen enacts the duties of Kache Marpo for Dorje Shugden as well as for Setrap Chen. The earliest mention of Yumar Gyalchen can be found in records dating to the time of the 1st Panglung Rinpoche Lobsang Choje when he initiated the building of Panglung Ritroe (Panglung Hermitage). The building of the Panglung Hermitage encountered many obstacles as it was a place of propagating the Dharma, so Panglung Rinpoche propitiated the great protectors Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo. He requested for their help and assistance to remove obstacles, and to gather resources for the Panglung Hermitage to manifest. Through making extensive offerings, Panglung Rinpoche then decided to install Yumar Gyalchen as the principal protector of Panglung Ritroe to protect the retreat area, all its properties and practitioners. It is said that Yumar Gyalchen gave very obvious signs of joy when agreeing to protect the area and its practitioners. Thereafter, extensive liturgies and pujas were composed by Panglung Rinpoche and other high lamas to further strengthen the connection with Yumar Gyalchen.
The current 7th Panglung Oracle further elucidated that because Panglung Ritroe is very closely associated with Dorje Shugden, Yumar Gyalchen protects it by virtue of him being the main assistant of Dorje Shugden. And now that Panglung Ritroe has been relocated to and reestablished in Malaysia, the current Panglung Oracle has stated clearly that Yumar Gyalchen continues to be the protector of Panglung Ritroe in Kechara Forest Retreat, Malaysia.
Manifestation of Guru Devotion
Sworn to oath by Guru Rinpoche, Yumar Gyalchen promised to protect the Buddhadharma and just as Kache Marpo, he also promised to especially protect the doctrine of Je Tsongkhapa and all the lineage masters after him. Although he is an older protector of Buddhadharma, and a fully enlightened aspect of Hayagriva, Yumar Gyalchen humbly serves his masters although they may be “younger” than him in terms of seniority. It reflects that Yumar Gyalchen has no ego and is a fully realised being whom we can rely on for help and an infallible refuge. As he is the same in nature as Hayagriva who is also Avalokiteshvara, Yumar Gyalchen’s love and compassion for sentient beings has no boundaries. His only focus is on helping sentient beings overcome their obstacles to achieve full awakening.
Some may wonder why there is a need for two protectors who have similar functions, one being the emanation of the other. As we each have our own karmas to contend with, the enlightened beings through their compassion and by means of enlightened activities manifest differently in order to come to our aid, suit our minds when we are in need of help and to hold our hands until our journey ends when we reach supreme awakening. Yumar Gyalchen’s approach is more that of a loving mother for her only child. The high lamas always refer to him as the peaceful form of Kache Marpo, just like how Tsangpa Karpo is referred to as the peaceful form of Setrap Chen. If we were to pose the same question to both protectors (Kache Marpo and Yumar Gyalchen), the answer would be exactly the same; the only difference is the approach by which the protectors take to deliver the answers.
With the line of Panglung Oracles, Yumar Gyalchen takes trance to enact enlightened activities on behalf of Dorje Shugden. The mind of Yumar Gyalchen and Dorje Shugden are actually of the same attainments and realisations because they are all enlightened. For example, Yumar Gyalchen, in his great compassion, is known to deliver Dharma teachings on behalf of the Dharma King Dorje Shugden in trance. But to further elucidate the Buddha’s teachings on Guru Devotion, Yumar Gyalchen manifests as the student and assistant, serving Dorje Shugden in his ministry as a subordinate. And just like Kache Marpo, Yumar Gyalchen represents Dorje Shugden and is a bridge between Dorje Shugden and those in the mortal realm.
Yumar Gyalchen is also a master of tantra and medicine. On many occasions when the oracle has taken trance of Yumar Gyalchen, he has been known to perform very powerful healing rituals on those who are sick and they are seen to recover almost instantly. Those who benefit from Yumar Gyalchen’s healing varies from high lamas to normal laymen. In some cases, through the power of mantra, Yumar Gyalchen will bless grains of rice and give it to the patient to partake; in other times, he will blow mantras to bless the sick and heal them from their ailments.
The Purpose of His Peaceful Demeanour
Many relate the swift and quick actions of the protectors with wrath. The mind of enlightenment however, is not confined to any one way to achieve a certain activity to benefit. This is especially the case when people can sometimes be adverse to aggressiveness, perhaps mistaking it for anger arising from an unenlightened being. Thus, their understanding of Dharma being such that it is, they might prefer to take a more laid-back approach and find peaceful deities more appealing to them. Yumar Gyalchen fits the bill perfectly, as he manifests in a peaceful form to help sentient beings achieve the same result. In fact, many times during trance of the oracle monk, he arrives so peacefully that it is as if the oracle is speaking but in actual fact it is Yumar Gyalchen himself. Unlike many other Protectors, he is known to enter the oracle with no wrath or signs that a protector has taken trance. And because of the calmness of his arrival, only those who have been serving the Protector in trance long enough will know exactly his presence and demeanour, and the fact Yumar Gyalchen has arrived.
Yumar Gyalchen’s fulfilment ritual was originally written by the 1st Panglung Rinpoche. As the years passed however, it became lost in time as a casualty of the Cultural Revolution. In exile, the umze (lead chanter) of Panglung Hermitage requested His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche to compose a propitiation ritual to this protector to make up for the ones lost. In his great compassion, Trijang Rinpoche composed rituals for our benefit.
Yumar Gyalchen’s iconography is laid out in his fulfilment ritual, and it indicates that he is similar in appearance to Kache Marpo. In the fulfilment ritual, the visualisation of his countenance starts with a sea of the enemy’s boiling blood and fat. In the centre of this sea, there is a stack of human corpses and horse carcasses which serve as a cushion. On top of this ‘cushion’ is a red syllable “TSE” radiating bright light, punishing severely all demons and maras who harm the Buddha’s teachings. The lights gather back and transform completely into the great red wild tsen, Yumar Gyalchen.
His body is red in colour like a mountain of coral, encircled by the light of the sun. With one face and two arms, he brandishes a sharp red spear with his right hand. The spear is adorned with a flying banner and it pierces into the heart of the enemy. At the level of his heart, Yumar Gyalchen’s left hand holds a tsen-spirit noose which is tied to the neck of the vow breaker. Just like Kache Marpo, Yumar Gyalchen is especially disturbed by those who break their vows. Kache Marpo for example, is known to pick up and throw vow-breaking monks out of the trance venue. These enlightened beings manifest such wrath towards vow-breakers because the negative karma of breaking one’s vows is extremely heavy. Compassionately, they know something has to be done to stop these people from repeating their destructive actions which will only harm themselves, and to purify their negative karma.
On his head, Yumar Gyalchen wears a red silk scarf while his body is adorned by a mail (armour) made of red silk that is beautified with jewels. His feet are clad with silk boots and he rides a brown horse complete with saddle and bridle. Yumar Gyalchen is surrounded by numberless tsen armies, strong and unruly, who are surrounded by the further four classes of emanations which are limitless in number.
Like any other enlightened Dharma protector, Yumar Gyalchen operates on the basis of karma and compassion. He protects and nurtures those who keep their samayas (relationship) with their gurus intact, just like how he himself does in serving Dorje Shugden and Setrap. Thus, in fulfilment of his promise to assist genuine Dharma practitioners, Yumar Gyalchen has for centuries taken trance of various oracles to give prophetic advice to those who seek his assistance. Not one time has Yumar Gyalchen ever been accused of being wrong in his advice.

So we are very fortunate to be able to connect with this protective deity who not only protects us from the dangers of samsara but is also able to guide and show us the way to enlightenment. If we take him as our refuge and rely upon him as our protector, Yumar Gyalchen will not only take care of us for this lifetime, but he will also guide us and ensure our salvation for many future lives to come. When we create karmic causes in relations to an enlightened being, the causes and the benefits stay with us for many lifetimes to come, until we reach our desired goal. And because they are enlightened beings who operate out of compassion, they assist and guide without wanting anything in return. This is the nature of this sacred protector whom we should cherish and keep close to our hearts for his only interest is for us to attain the bodhi mind.
Many have attested to Yumar Gyalchen’s swift response whenever prayers are made to both Dorje Shugden and himself. So below I have made available for you a short prayer that can be recited as a request for activities of the Great Protector Yumar Gyalchen. You do not require initiation or permission for this practice. You may begin immediately. You may download a picture of this deity to place on your shrine if you like. Any offerings can be made to him if you like. Most important is consistency in the daily prayers to him and trust. He will not always make things happen the way we think it should, so keep your trust and know his wisdom is greater than our’s. May you always be blessed by and connected to this sacred being, the Protector of Panglung Ritroe and the holy lineage of Je Tsongkhapa.

HUM
From vast vajra palaces wherever you abide,
Such as the frightful emanated wrathful mansion.
Great King Yumar (Red Turquoise) with your fierce forces,
Thinking of your strict heart commitment, come here now!
Before me in the center of a mandala emanated from samadhi,
On the red tsen-horse soaring like the wind,
Your sharp spear and lasso destroying enemies of the Teachings,
Great Mara-Subduing Hero, remain stably here!
Peaceful and wrathful offerings, five objects of the senses,
Auspicious signs and substances, seven objects of royalty,
Various mounts and favorite animals to see,
Jewelry, clothing, weapons, strong hard vajra armor
Delicious food, various drinks,
An ocean of medicinal liquor and mountain of torma,
Bases of body, speech, and mind, outer, inner and secret,
Delightful samaya substances, lacking nothing, are arranged.
In short, essence-mind’s non-fantasized empty nature,
Hundred-fold great bliss experience miraculously emanates.
As all desired wealth of the three realms without exception,
Fully appearing as a mandala, adorned with all delights.
As we offer this to you, great Guardian of the Doctrine,
Increased to a sky treasure with mantra and mudra,
Happily accepting, fully restore any transgression or decline
That has contradicted your heart commitment, without exception!
With irresistible wrathful vajra power,
Grinding enemies and obstructers with declined samaya to dust,
And protecting the Teachings and Teachers like your son,
Continuously, without interruption, Great Wild Tsen, praise to you!
As you have promised when placed under oath,
By Hayagriva, the root and lineage Gurus,
Seyi Trabchen and Dorje Shugden,
Accomplish this action that I request!
Proliferate and spread, in all times and places,
Manjusri Tsongkhapa’s system, essence of Buddha’s Teachings!
Grant long life and increase the sphere of action,
Of those who properly uphold those Teachings!
Increase Sanghas’ harmony and ethical discipline,
Teachings, practice and all Dharmic activity like the waxing moon!
In this land, pacify all degeneration of the times,
And spread illumination of happy perfection everywhere!
Annihilate enemies and obstructers,
Who harm the Teachers and Teachings, the patrons and those they sponsor.
Subdue them in accordance with the conditions,
Raise the banner of victory for those on the side of virtue!
In particular, as we entrust all to you,
Ourselves, master and disciples, people and wealth,
When we rely on you and honor you, don’t be distant!
When we fervently call on you, don’t harden your ears!
When exhorted to action, don’t slow your horse!
When set upon an enemy, don’t be of inferior skill!
Protect us at home and abroad like our shadow,
Without separation for even an instant
Pacify disease, spirits, bad conditions, and obstructers,
Establish conducive conditions without exception,
Swiftly accomplish whatsoever desired aims.
We request, unwaveringly, without exception!

Looking at the pictures of the 7th Panglung Oracle in trance of the peaceful Yumar Gyalchen is a blessing. Even though I am not there to see for myself yet simply looking at it tells all. Glad to understand more through this article about Yumar Gyelchen and the differences between Yumar Gyalchen and Kache Marpo. Yumar Gyalchen like any other enlightened Dharma protector, will help, protect Dharma practitioners when we practice guru devotion and dharma diligently.
Well , very fortunate Rinpoche had re-establishing the Panglung Ritroe in Kechara Forest Retreat, Malaysia as the official residence of the oracle. Yumar Gyalchen will be remained as the protector in Kechara Forest Retreat . Interesting read.

Mantras are sacred verbalized words that invoke the protection and blessings of the deity to whom the mantra is ascribed. Mantras are also the manifestations of Buddhas in the form of ‘sounds’, hence the various mantras of Dorje Shugden contain the essence of the Protector.

Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.
You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.

This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.
The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

A Daily Request for Wealth, Peace and Protection

In the heavens there are myriad manifestations of the divine. All those manifestations specifically show us different aspects of divinity in order to be of benefit to all living beings. All the rupakaya forms of the divine have compassion, skillful means and wisdom. We invoke upon them whether we are happy, sad, down, lost, fulfilled, confused, empty, and during the whole range of emotions we constantly experience due to an untrained mind.
Understanding our nature, Great Wisdom Being Dorje Shugden, therefore all the more so, please hold us close to your bosom as an only child to a parent.
Though the manifestations of the divine need no offerings and gifts from us, we offer you supreme Manjushri Dorje Shugden a libation of tea, incense and mantras, in order to ask you to bless us, to be a part of our lives, to abide in our dwellings and to give us signs, omens and portents of both good and bad. When the negative arises, quell them immediately. Please increase the positive for my weary and worn mind as I lay my hopes in you.
When difficulties, problems and confusion arise, we ask you, who is but the culmination of all that is powerful, holy and omniscient to bless myself, family, loved ones, environment and even my pets. May I see wisdom, find hope, and be at peace.
I request you, O Divine Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, who wears a round dome hat and the three robes of a saffroned bhikshu, who wields a sword of liberty, justice and wisdom and clutches a wish-fulfilling jewel, who rides on a supreme lion of subjugation of all that is negative, to fulfill my wishes. I understand my wishes may not be the best, so I surrender to your wisdom for the outcome though it may not be what I have in mind. Please bless myself and everyone that we may enter into the supreme city of liberation.
Great Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, I request you sincerely from my heart to be a part of my life, bless my home, and grant me wisdom, solace and comfort, that I might be of service to others without agenda, and that I may focus out onto others and not be fixated on myself, creating more problems for all that I hold dear.
Bless me to become kinder, wiser, more compassionate, tolerant and very forgiving to all those who hurt and love me. In order to become close to you, Dorje Shugden, we must surrender the banal. We must abandon fixed views, projections and rigidity. Lastly, in my final moment when I leave this plane of existence, only the positive actions I have done will matter as everything and everyone will be left behind. Let me realise this and act upon this now! At this crucial moment, please may I have a vision of yourself, the powerful and merciful Dorje Shugden, to take me to where I may course in the sky to continue my journey of spiritual waxing.
I offer you saffron-coloured tea and my faith to fulfill my prayers and gain siddhis. By reciting your mantra, may healing, peace, love, long life, protection and perfect view of sunyata arise.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama
Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.
After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.
The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.
His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.
Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.
Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.
The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.
Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-
1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-
– Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
– Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
– Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
– Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
– Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.
2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.
3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.
4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.
5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.
6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.
7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.
These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

A very informative article for people like me who is fascinated by the many deities and different forms of protectors of Tibetan Buddhism but only know a little about them. Reading through this gives insight to the Dorje Shugden’s minister, Kache Marpo. Yumar Gyalchen is the peaceful form of Kache Marpo just like Tsnagpo Karpo is the peaceful form of Setrap. We are propitiating the wrathful form of protector to invoice the swift and potent assistance. Yuma Gyalcehn’s purpose is to be the bridge between the wrathful protectors (Dorje Shugden and Kache Marpo) with the mortals by delivering teachings and instructions when taking trance in the Oracles. It was mentioned (in another article) that usually the wrathful forms of Dharmapala will not stay long out of compassion because they do not want the audience to incur negative karma for not being able to fulfil the instruction to clear their own obstacle). As Yumar Gyalcehn is in peaceful form, he will be able to stay longer and give teaching and blessing. Thank you for this sharing, Rinpoche, I learn a lot more about Dorje Shugden.
Wow! Great to know about Yumar Gyalchen!
But does this mean that every time when Kache Marpo takes trance, when it comes to give advices to the devotees, Yumar Gyalchen will be the one who take over and continue? Or, Kache Marpo can also give advices peacefully?
I am fortunate witness Yumar Gyelchen 3 time through Chojila taking trance at Kechara forest retreat. Is ready eye open when Yumar Gyelchen take trance and answer the question. He is so compassionate and patiently answer each question plus advice in dharma. Can notice his advice are full of dharma teaching with understanding not like normal wordly protector. I am glad to know more about Yumar Gyelchen through this article especially his connection with Dorje Shugden, and he is protector to protect Panglung retroe always helping those who came to seek advice from him.
During the time when Choji-la taking trance in Kechara Forest Retreat, I didn’t really hear clearly that Rinpoche actually did say Yumar Gyalchen, Kache Marpo. I only know that it was the peaceful form of Kache Marpo that Choji-la was taking trance. After reading this article and watching the short video clip, only I realize that the protector we met during trance was actually Yumar Gyalchen. And it’s amazing that Kache Marpo, the minister of Dorje Shugden has his own 6 emanation. It’s very very auspicious that we actually meet Yumar Gyalchen before, and we have his oracle resides in Kechara Forest Retreat. This clearly shows that the relationship between Rinpoche and protector is very strong. We are very very blessed to have both Rinpoche and Yumar Gyalchen to be with us and guide us in our spiritual path. ??

I am amazed with the function Kache Marpo’s peaceful Yumar Gyalchen. He helps and assists practitioners in their Dharma path and also a healer of sickness. I am also amazed that Yumar Gyalchen was enthroned to be the protector of the previous Panglung Ritroe and also the current one in Kechara Forest Retreat, Malaysia.
Dharma Protector Yumar Gyalchen, i thought Dorje Shugden only has 5 forms and Kache Marpo only. This article make me to know more of Dorje Shugden and the other protectors.

This is another education to me. I have never thought Kache Marpo have 6 emanations and Yumar Gyalchen was one of them. He is very special and unique as he arose as a peaceful form with compassion and calm when on trance. Protectors will come aid if we sincerely open up our hearts and fully believe in Him.
It’s intrigued how could Dorje Shugden been claimed as demon or spirit, if there were so powerful protectors like Kache Marpo and Setrap Chen assisting him.
Even upon looking closely I find it not easy to distinguish between Yumar Gyalchen and Kache Marpo as they are both so similar in look, even the attire and the steed is similar too. For Yumar Gyalchen to agree for his photo to be taken when he was in trance of the 7th Panglung Oracle is testimony to the close bond between him and Rinpoche. Kechara is very fortunate for Yumar Gyalchen to make Kechara Forest Retreat his abode. This is only possible through the compassion and wisdom of Rinpoche, who commissioned the building of the Panglung Ritroe for the lineage and practice of Lama Tsongkhapa to continue and benefit more sentient beings.
Dharma Protectors regardless of their “seniority”or their level of attainments will manifest supreme compassion in order to bring the best benefits to real practitioners. I am in awe of what happened in KFR where Yumar Gyalchen took trance and “posed” for a photo with Rinpoche’s request. The relationship between Rinpoche with protectors particularly with Dorje Shugden, Kache Marpo and Yumar Gyalchen in this case are very very intimate and often depicted as in one of the 50 stanzas of Guru Devotion, like a newly wed couple. This shows Rinpoche has great Guru Devotion and doing a lot for the benefit of sentient beings, that is why The protectors are happy hence the intimacy.
How compassionate the Buddhas are! They emanate in so many forms just to suit and benefit so many of us. We are truly fortunate to be able to receive the teachings and blessings of Dorje Shugden in so many forms. To have merits to connect to so many protectors for our spiritual path not only in this life but all future lives.
To have Yumar Gyalchen in peaceful form makes it easier for us to connect in our spiritual path.
Looking at how enlightened being so compassionate to manifest in a form that to suit our mind and our karma just solely to help us. In this degenerate time we have accumulate so much negative karma and one of the fastest way to help us to purify is with the help of protector practice. Yumar Gyelchen in his peaceful form manifested to easier connect with us to help us in our spiritual practice.
What important here is that since we are so fortunate to meet his practices and should go all the way with it with great devotion in order to bring benefit not only to ourselves but also to others.
Peaceful form Protector, First time Im hearing it, normally Protector is presented in a wrathful form and due to the wrathness, it helps to remove obstacles or purify karma in a very short time, but Yumar Gyelchen is different, it work as a protector but in a peaceful form, just like the peaceful form of Dorje Shugden – Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen.
An enlightened being is really almighty, they can come in any form and yet uses the same energy to help every sentient beings. We are very fortunate to have Setrap, Dorje Shugden, Karche Marpo, Yumar Gyelchen, so many Protectors to guide us thru thicks and thins in our life.

The top photo of the 7th Panglung Oracle in trance of the peaceful Yumar Gyalchen is extremely drawing. This is the first time I head about requesting to take a photo of Yumar Gyalchen during trance of the oracle, and for Yumar Gyalchen to agree and even called Beng Kooi over to take the photo for Rinpoche shows how respected Rinpoche is by the enlightened beings. They can see the works of Rinpoche clearly, and how Rinpoche is spreading the Buddha Dhama and lineage of Tsongkhapa far and wide and is very happy with that.
The relationship between Dorje Shugden, Kache Marpo and Yumar Gyalchen is like teacher-disciple. Just like during the times of Buddha, his close disciples also manifested such relationship, so that the Dharma can grow further. Enlightened beings are not bound by samsara and karma, and therefore when they assist us, they assist us on our spiritual paths based on what’s best for it, being able to see well into our future lives. Therefore whenever we propitiate the help of enlightened beings, we cannot have expectations/projections and boundaries on how we must be helped. Just trust in their compassion and wisdom that it is the most beneficial for us, in both the short and long term.

We have been very fortunate to be able to witness the trance of Dorje Shugden, Kache Marpo and Yumar Gyalchen in Kechara Forest Retreat in 2015. As many as 700 people were able to attend this trance and receive blessings from the enlightened beings. Thank you Rinpoche the the explanation and the prayers. Also gratitude to Rinpoche for re-establishing the Panglung Ritroe in KFR, Malaysia as the official residence of the oracle which was destroyed long time ago.
Thank you for highlighting the difference between Yumar Gyalchen and Kache Marpo as it helps to clear some of my questions earlier. The ability of enlightened beings being able to manifest different emanations to suit our needs and level of mind, always fascinated me. I like how it was mentioned that Yumar Gyalchen being an older protector to Dorje Shugden in terms of seniority, He chose to humbly serve Dorje Shugden as promised. Many of us have seen how lovingly, compassionately and patiently Yumar Gyalche was blessing and giving Dharma talk to the audience during trance, we have seen with our own eyes how an enlightened being like Yumar Gyalche fulfil his job as to first help to clear our obstacles, heal us, then lovingly give advises and dharma talk just to lead us to the awakened path.
Thank you Rinpoche for giving us so much knowledge. Rinpoche has introduced to us Dorje Shugden, Kache Marco, Setrap, Namkar Barzin, Methar and now Yuma Gyalchen. We are able to learn about their origin and their practice, how precious it is.
There are many protectors in Vajrayana spectrum, some are enlightened and some are not. It is important that we understand and know the origin of what we are practising, then we can make the best out of our practice. When we have the knowledge, we will be able to educate other people as well.

Thank you for this Rinpoche and the writers team, we are fortunate to know about the peaceful form of Kache Marpo.
May the Panglung Ritroe, grow evermore to benefit all sentient beings and protect Tsongkhapa’s lineage.
In 2015, due to the kindness and compassion of our precious guru, H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, we were so fortunate to witness an auspicious trance took by Panglung Kuten in Kechara Forest Retreat.
I still can recall some of the important advice from Yumar Gyalchen , the peaceful form of Kache Marpo:
As a Buddhist, we should believe in the Three Jewels. When we believe in dharma, we must act in accordance to the dharma. We cannot believe in dharma and act in the opposite way with our anger, jealousy and hatred.
As such, if we request Yumar Gyalchen to help and bless us swiftly, we should practice guru devotion and dharma diligently. This is because Yumar Gyalchen will assist genuine Dharma practitioners and those those who keep their samayas with their gurus intact.

We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to witness Dorje Shugden’s trance and listen to the dharma talk from his entourage Yumar Gyalchen here in KFR. As a Buddhist we only seek refuge and pray to the enlighten beings. I have witness those who prayed to spirits, eventually they themselves will get the harm back. Spirits always disguised themselves as someone greater, however in return spirits will request for liquor, cigarettes, meat and sometimes blood as offerings. We might get what we want in short term, but in long term it will be very harmful to us. We should only trust the 3 jewels ie Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. Only enlighten beings will benefit us and gave us protection.
Thank you, Rinpoche for teaching us, introducing to us, and giving us an opportunity to get to know another Dharma protector who is actually Hayagriva who is Kache Marpo. This goes to show the great compassion of Enlightened beings who will do all they can to benefit us, and that there is no limit to their power and ability to help us. But do we allow them to help us, or do we put limitations on ourselves so that their compassion to assist us is hindered? At the end of the day, any protector can only help us, if we truly want their help. And all we have to do is to be sincere.
It is amazing that Yumar Gyalchen that happily AGREED the moment Rinpoche requested for a picture of him. It also shows the relationship Rinpoche has with these enlightened protectors, which means they are very close to Rinpoche and that they respect Rinpoche very much. This also shows us that Rinpoche is a pure monk with clean Guru samaya, a good relationship with Rinpoche’s Guru(s). I don’t think an enlightened being would so easily and casually “pose” for the camera if anyone of us asked him. Wow… that is truly something.
So we are very fortunate to be able to connect with this protective because of Rinpoche. Now it is up to us to receive the blessings through our sincere actions.

With these explanation of Yumar Gyelchen i could understand better. Yumar Gyalchen enacts the duties of Kache Marpo for Dorje Shugden.
For centuries Yumar Gyalchen taken trance of various oracles to give prophetic advice to those who seek his assistance.And has taken trance at Kechara Forest Retreat before.Now the Panglung Ritroe has been relocated and staying in Malaysia.Thats wonderful indeed and Yumar Gyalchen will continues to be the protector in Kechara Forest Retreat and will protects and guide us to the way to enlightenment.

As in the video, I had the good fortune to be there to assist Yuma Gyalchen as he in trance of the Panglung Kuten or oracle. As I had said before and I say it again that it was a surreal experience considering I am assisting the Dharma Protector. At most times, it feels like its a man but at times you know he is not.
In his peaceful aspect, Yuma Gyalchen speaks a lot and in doing so, he wipes his face constantly and most of the time, I observe his eyes are closed most of the time and occasionally opening it to establish contact with the being he is blessing or to grab or move somewhere. I guess, he rather prefer to use his clairvoyance to perceive. I often wonder how that kinda perception is like. Perhaps, like a CCTV cluser of screens, with each screen displaying a different timeline -past, present and future.

It’s our good karma to learn about this compassionate protector who is always there to assist us. It’s amazing that Dorje Shugden’s entourage group is huge and each have different great functions that solely to help us in our spiritual path.
I feel gratitude to Panglung Kuten Oracle too, for him being such a pure oracle who be able to take trance of so many great protectors in order to help us. Oracle is the bridge to connect the ordinary us to these enlighten beings, a very special and tradition that Tibetan Buddhism has. Without an oracle like this, I think I have no chance to be so near to an enlighten beings for my whole life.

We are most fortunate to be introduced and acquainted to yet another Protector in the entourage of Dorje Shugden, none other than the peaceful emanation of Kache Marpo(Dorje Shugden’s chief minister), Yumar Gyalchen. He is here with us because he is the main Protector of the Panglung Ritroe which has now been relocated to Kechara Forest Retreat, Bentong.
As an emanation of Hayagriva, who is one with Avalokiteshvara, his compassion is boundless. Sworn to oath (by Guru Rinpoche )to protect the Buddhadharma, he also protects the doctrine of Tsongkhapa and all lineage masters after him. He comes swiftly to the aid of all who propitiate him and seek his protection, on condition that they keep their samaya with their Gurus clean.
As a master of tantra and healing, he has been known to perform powerful healing rituals which have brought instantaneous recovery from illness for those who had propitiated him -from high lamas to laymen. We are indeed blessed to have him in our midst to bless and protect us. To those who seek his blessings and protection, he will be there for you, like a father for his only son, through all future lifetimes until ultimate enlightenment! How wonderful!
There’s always a first time for everything. This is the first time I’m reading about Yumar Gyalcchen but it does not mean that Yumar Gyalchen did not exist before this. It only shows my ignorance.
To read that Yumar Gyalchen has been known to physically throw people out of the trance venue if they have broken vows shows how compassionate he is. This action will ensure that they work to keep their vows.
Thank for this precious teaching as we tend to forget that there can be any emanations not just manifestations from a single mindstream to suit out perceptions. We tend to seek out Buddhas that we think is suited to help clear our peculiar afflictions forgetting that all Buddhas are the same.
There’s always something new to learn, as this is something very new to me. I have not heard of Yumar Gyalchen before but it does not mean that Yumar Gyalchen did not exist before this. Everything is from our side and perpective.
To read that Yumar Gyalchen has thrown people out of trance venue when they have broken their vows show how compassionate Yumar Gyalchen is to take actions to ensure that the perpetrators changes his ways.
Thank you for this teaching. That there are many emanations from a single mindstream is very precious as we in our delusions need to identify with something which we think is what we need. We tend to seek help of those that we feel are closer to us.

We definitely require strict monitoring from a Dharma Protector such as Yumar Gyalchen through His blessing and protection, to safeguard our Buddhadharma practice so that we will not end up in breaking our vows and commitment during the current age of Kaliyuga. With the relocation and reestablishment of Panglung Ritroe in Kechara Forest Retreat, Malaysia, it is so wonderful to know that the Protector of Panglung Ritroe is now residing here in Malaysia too. And he is Yumar Gyalchen, the peaceful emanation of Karche Marpo, chief minister of Protector Dorje Shugden.
Besides the knowledge I acquired with this article, I am now able to know specifically another member of the huge entourage of our Protector, Dorje Shugden.
The question that arises for me is how come there are so many protectors? The answer is also clear to me. Due to the many levels of our karma and requirements and sad to say, suitability, these compassionate and loving beings will manifest and emanate in as many forms necessary to be able to accommodate our inadequacy. In order to help us out os samsara, these enlightened compassionate beings will do whatever it takes help us.
WHAT GREAT COMPASSION.
Yumar Gyalchen is an emanation of Kache Marpo, who is an emanation of Hayagriva, who in turn is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara the Buddha of Compassion. He is also a Dharam Protector in his own right. We are truly privileged to be able to encounter, and learn about a being like this, and to receive his blessing and assistance. Thank You H.E Tsem Rinpoche for blogging about him. So many beings comprise Dorje Shugden’s entourage & mandala, and assist him willingly. We should follow our guru’s advice and practices he’s laid out and maintain our vows well, as Yumar Gyalchen is especially disturbed by those who break their vows. I found it interesting that Yumar Gyalchen can take trance so easily that it’s hard to know when he’s entered an oracle. If we rely upon him as our protector, Yumar Gyalchen will not only take care of us for this lifetime but many lifetimes to come!

I did not know of Yumar Gyalchen till now. The picture of Yumar Gyalchen / Choji-la strikes me as showing a peaceful and approachable demeanor.
I have a question, why does Yumar Gyalchen wear a plain, unetched/uncarved, melong? This is difference between Kache Marpo and Yumar Gyalchen.
